LETTER FROM THE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Symphony Friends, The 45th Anniversary Season asked us to look back at Palm Beach Symphony’s long history. From the very first concert that took place in the homes of patrons, to the first free children’s concert of Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals, to the first concert on the waterfront free for the community, to the introduction of our chamber music series … all of this led us to where we are today and will carry us ahead to a vibrant future.

“Our 45th season is a celebration of orchestral music like no other in our history” David McClymont

Our 2018/19 season was shaped by the 45th anniversary gemstone, the sapphire, which represents joy, peace, prosperity, and beauty. And these qualities were reflected throughout the entire season. Our free children’s concerts and music education program brought the joy of music to more than 10,000+ students. Our masterworks concerts, chamber music concerts, and 36 free community outreach performances provided peace to the mind, body, and spirit of concertgoers. The season prospered with plentiful new initiatives such as the Instrumental Music Teacher of the Year and B-Major. The commitment of our donors who believe in the mission of Palm Beach Symphony to engage, educate, and entertain the community through live performances of inspiring orchestral music was beautifully displayed at our 17th annual gala, which raised $600,000, thanks in part to a challenge grant. Everyone at Palm Beach Symphony, the board of directors, musicians, and staff, were all incredibly thankful for the number of people who came together to join us in our anniversary and helped us make a difference in the lives of many in our community. We are excited and motivated for the next stage of Palm Beach Symphony’s future, and I invite you to join us in keeping the dream alive for another 45 years. The 46th season will be our first step into an era of innovation and diversity. It will move Palm Beach Symphony beyond its old boundaries, and I can’t wait to have you join us on our exciting new future under the leadership of our new maestro, Gerard Schwarz. As always, thank you for your support. Palm Beach Symphony has made a big difference in our community through classical music, and we’re going to keep doing so for many more years to come. Yours truly,

David McClymont

PALM BEACH SYMPHONY Founded in 1974

HISTORY

Palm Beach Symphony is South Florida’s premier orchestra, known for its diverse repertoire and commitment to community. Founded in 1974, this 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization adheres to a mission of engaging, educating, and entertaining the greater community of the Palm Beaches through live performances of inspiring orchestral music. The orchestra is celebrated for delivering spirited masterworks and chamber music concerts by first-rate musicians and distinguished guest artists. In our earliest days, the orchestra performed only a few concerts a year with a part-time conductor and a volunteer staff. It was not until Mrs. Ethel S. Stone became Palm Beach Symphony’s board chair, a position she held for 23 years, that Palm Beach Symphony began establishing itself as a cultural force in the community. A visionary leader, Mrs. Stone inherited her love of music from her family and generously shared it with the community she loved. During her tenure, a number of well-known musicians served in leadership roles, including Karl Karapetian, John Iuele, Kenneth Schermerhorn, Stewart Kershaw, David Gray, Ulf Björlin, and John Covelli. Upon Mrs. Stone’s death on August 6, 1996, John and Joan Tighe stepped in to continue her legacy. They established a stable board of directors, a dedicated administrative staff, and a small endowment fund to ensure Palm Beach Symphony’s continued growth. Musicians who led the orchestra during the Tighes’ tenure were Alan Kogosowski, Vladimir Ponkin, Sergiu Schwartz, Ray Robinson and Donald Oglesby.

TODAY From our humble beginnings, Palm Beach Symphony has grown to become a cultural pillar in the Palm Beach community. We attract members who enjoy pairing quality concerts with fine dining experiences and social events, and who value and support Palm Beach Symphony’s music education and community outreach programs. In 2018, as Palm Beach Symphony entered its 45th season, we moved our operations across the bridge from Palm Beach (where we’d operated since 1974) to West Palm Beach, allowing us space to realize our full potential by expanding our mission and reaching even more corners of the community with orchestral music. By integrating with the rich fabric of the Downtown West Palm Beach business district, we’re able to align with countless economic development and tourism assets to enrich the lives of families, businesses, residents, students and tourists. Through important collaborations with our valued community partners – the Palm Beach County School District, the Related Group, the Cultural Council, the Downtown Development Authority, and the West Palm Beach Arts and Entertainment District, to name just a few – we’re continuing to grow our mission and expand our reach in Palm Beach County, bringing classical music to people of all ages, backgrounds and life experiences.

DONOR STORY Dora Bak Dora Bak, born in Germany in 1914, developed a love for music and the arts. Her father was a violinist for the town orchestra. She grew up in a home that was always filled with music. Mrs. Bak loved the culture of Palm Beach and was a supporter of many charities. She was a longtime supporter of Palm Beach Symphony. In 2002, she donated $1 million to the orchestra. Mrs. Bak’s generosity has provided the Symphony with a “bridge” to where we are today. She will always be a honored member of our legacy society, which is named after her.

DONOR STORY Karen and Ken Rogers Karen and Ken Rogers both have a passion, connection, and history with classical music – starting from a young age. Karen had an extensive professional career as an accomplished opera soprano – singing at the Metropolitan Opera and other major houses around the world. Karen got her first major start with Boris Goldovsky playing Gilda in Rigoletto, but her very first shows were when she teamed up with friends and family to put on a neighborhood performance; the family’s garage was the stage and the curtains that were hung up were the backdrop. Ken Rogers was an instrumentalist. In school, he wanted to play the trumpet, but the school was out of trumpets so they gave him a mellophone instead. He grew to love the sound and began playing French horn – studying the instrument at the Peabody Institute. Ken and Karen both love music and believe in the work Palm Beach Symphony does with its music education programs, in which professional musicians are sent into the county schools to lead coaching sessions. They also are proud to sponsor the principal French horn chair.

Performances and Partnerships

4TH ANNUAL FREE Community Concert in West Palm Beach

Palm Beach Symphony’s community outreach events serve as the cornerstone of our efforts to expand our relevance, reaching Palm Beach County’s broad and diverse community. Each season, in addition to our regular series offerings, we perform several mini-concerts throughout Palm Beach County and surrounding counties. These outreach events are often in support of community groups or foundations and allow us to reach beyond our concert venues to engage with important members of the community – including county officials, business owners, and local influencers. Our most prominent and highest-attended community outreach is our annual waterfront concert, presented in collaboration with the West Palm Beach Arts & Entertainment District. Set along the city’s stunning waterfront at the Meyer Amphitheatre, the concert is our opportunity to perform a mix of classical, pops, and show tunes in a free-to-the-community concert open to all residents and visitors to the Downtown West Palm Beach. This event often allows us to share the stage with other cultural or performing arts groups and is an annual family favorite. Palm Beach Symphony outreach performances include a mix of community and private affairs and have grown in number each year.

Other noteworthy community outreach events and performances include:

NURTURING NOTES Palm Beach Symphony partners with Creative Arts Therapies of the Palm Beaches (CATPB) to connect all corners of the community through music. Through Nurturing Notes, our Palm Beach Symphony musicians and a certified music therapist from CATPB work with vulnerable and isolated populations, such as seniors living in assisted living and memory care communities, at-risk children, veterans and Holocaust survivors with PTSD, and those receiving inpatient care for medical or mental health needs.

The grant allows for the continuation and introduction of vital music education initiatives, including artist-in-residence programs, teacher resources, donated instruments and an exclusive collaboration with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium for STEAM Nights. Palm Beach Symphony has worked diligently to expand its music education and continues to expand its reach each year to students and school music programs throughout Palm Beach County. Two of our newest programs include: INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR PALM BEACH COUNTY Through a formal nomination and selection process, Palm Beach Symphony recognizes an instrumental music teacher or program director for their outstanding teaching techniques, ability to nurture students’ musical talents and capacity to connect with and inspire their students. I have been working for several years to be able to afford a good-quality instrument, but was never able to purchase one… I am still in shock how much better my sound, intonation, and tone has improved with my new violin. I am now more confident, especially for auditions, with my playing… Thank you again!” B-MAJOR WINNER, VIOLIN, VALENTINA PAOLUCCI

COACHING SESSIONS Student musicians learn technique, tone, posture and proper instrument position in small group settings with professional Symphony instrument instructors. During the last portion of the session, the students come together in a large group to work on ensemble balance, rehearsing alongside our Symphony musicians. We also provide school residencies, which involve regularly scheduled and continuous coaching sessions throughout the academic year. LECTURE DEMONSTRATIONS Symphony musicians present lecture demonstrations by performing select pieces and speaking about the music, the instrument, the composer, and their own lives as musicians. These unique opportunities help familiarize students with the instruments of the orchestra, the musicians, and the music they perform.

14

PAL M B EACH SY MPH ONY

MASTER CLASSES These individual coaching sessions led by master musicians in front of an audience or class allow student musicians to perform a prepared piece and receive expert feedback. Master Class students benefit from master musician critiques on areas for improvement, including musical technique, style, interpretative qualities, presentation, and overall musicality. INSTRUMENT DONATIONS Palm Beach Symphony happily accepts donations of professional or amateur quality orchestral instruments, such as violins, violas, cellos, double basses, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, French horns, trumpets, trombones, tubas or pianos. We ensure the instruments meet performance standards, then donate them to underserved children or school music programs in Palm Beach County.

SIDE-BY-SIDE PERFORMANCES Advanced students get to perform next to Palm Beach Symphony musicians. The opportunity to play their instruments side-by-side with professional musicians provides students with an unforgettable performance experience and experiential learning they can later apply to their own professional growth. STEAM NIGHTS The Symphony collaborates with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium in their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) nights, implemented by the School District of Palm Beach County. By incorporating the musical arts, Palm Beach Symphony provides additional music activities, transforming STEM to STEAM (adding the A for Arts). PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES Student musicians and school music groups are given opportunities to perform prior to Palm Beach Symphony Masterworks concerts and at other special events throughout the year to showcase their extraordinary work.

"We always start our class by playing scales. One day, I was demonstrating how fast I could play my scales. The kids were of course very impressed. I told them that they could do it too. So we worked for a few minutes on fast playing and, sure enough, they were able to play their scale very fast. Right at that moment, their teacher walked into the room. I had them demonstrate their fast scales to him. I was very proud of them, and I was most excited to see how proud they were of themselves." PALM BEACH SYMPHONY PRINCIPAL CELLIST, CLAUDIO JAFFÉ

ENTERTAIN DONOR STORY John and Barbara Thomas For many years, John and Barbara Thomas were subscription holders to the Regional Arts Classical Concert Series at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. About a few years ago, they received donated tickets for a Palm Beach Symphony Masterworks concert from a gala in Palm Beach. After one concert, they instantly were hooked! The rest is history. John and Barbara have been subscription holders with Palm Beach Symphony for five years and look forward to every new season. They love the varied programs, the professionalism of the musicians, and the wonderful venues. As John and Barbara say: “We are never disappointed!”

16

PALM B EACH SY MPHONY

The Palm Beaches and surrounding areas are immersed in a deep cultural and historical heritage that gives our orchestra opportunities to perform in a variety of culturally important venues, including The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, The Society of the Four Arts, The Norton Museum of Art, the Historical Society of the Palm Beaches, and other traditional and nontraditional venues throughout South Florida. Known for our lively and inspiring five-concert Masterworks series, we’ve recently expanded our programming to include a three-concert chamber music series, which includes an educational offshoot called Chamber Chats. These chamber concerts pair music with enlightening commentary by local musicians, historians and scholars, and are designed for students of all ages who appreciate “music for the mind.” Palm Beach Symphony’s concert season runs from December through April and is funded by contributions from individuals, foundations, fundraising activities, grants and corporate sponsorships. Each year, the board presents two prestigious fundraising events – The Holly Jolly Symphony Fête and the Palm Beach Symphony annual gala – both of which are held on Palm Beach and attract our highest-level donors. The Holly Jolly Fête is held each year in December and the annual gala is held in February. Palm Beach Symphony’s full calendar of social events includes fine dining experiences on concert evenings, celebratory cocktail receptions to open and close the season, and an annual sunset dinner cruise. These events allow donors to share their love of classical music in settings that promote cultural camaraderie and tighten the bond between Palm Beach Symphony and its supporters. Up-and-coming supporters take part in Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony social events with purpose. This group of young professionals and community influencers enjoy concerts, mixers, sip-and-shops and events as ambassadors of Palm Beach Symphony’s music education and community outreach initiatives.

“She has a big sound, a huge technique, and perhaps more remarkable considering her age, a maturity of interpretation that showed up immediately in the Brahms concerto... “Monday night in Gubelmann Auditorium, the Palm Beach Symphony Orchestra played the penultimate Masterworks Series concert of its 45th anniversary season at The Society of the Four Arts. The soloists were Robert Weiner, oboe; Anna Brumbaugh, clarinet; Madison Allen, horn; and Luciano Magnanini, bassoon. Entitled 'Cool Winds,' the program, under the direction of Ramón Tebar, showcased the orchestra’s woodwind and string choirs in works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn. Their teamwork was assured and their various solos were well-characterized. In the remarkable adagio 'Recitativo' of No. 7, concertmaster Evija Ozolins and principal cello Claudio Jaffé were eloquent in their solos and duets, as was principal bass Juan Carlos Pena in the minuets. Maestro Tebar led all the players smartly.”

“Palm Beach Symphony kicked off their second annual chamber music series at the Harriet Himmel Theater in CityPlace on Wednesday night with a pair of Viennese string quartets... The tone this quartet created had a leanness to it that rung in the tall space of the Himmel. You could hear the detail of bow hair against strings that provided some welcome grit other musicians would mistakenly have plastered over with vibrato… Like the first entrance of the night, the last note of this finale rang out with the same resonant steeliness that colored both pieces in a nice way.”

YOUNG FRIENDS OF PALM BEACH SYMPHONY Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony brings together young professional and music enthusiasts with the shared objective of supporting Palm Beach Symphony’s impactful education and outreach programs. These community influencers enjoy six exclusive events each year at hot spots like The Breakers

Palm Beach, The Royal Poinciana Plaza, and the International Polo Club. With a team of more than 30 executive committee members, this season’s Annual Gala-Night Party brought in more than 100 Young Friends to the creative black-tie event. The Young Friends raised more than $15,000 to help fund Palm Beach Symphony’s music education program as well as its community outreach initiatives.

HOLLY JOLLY SYMPHONY FÊTE The Palm Beach Symphony Ladies Guild, Holly Jolly Host Committee, and Music Men organized their third annual holiday luncheon for 270 attendees at the Sailfish Club. The Holly Jolly Symphony Fête brought in $80,000, $30,000 more than last year’s event. CBS12 news anchor Liz Quirantes returned to emcee the event, which featured a silent auction, a raffle, a video presentation, and live holiday music. New to the event was the awarding of Palm Beach Symphony’s Instrumental Music Teacher of the Year Award, which went to Alain Goindoo of Pahokee Middle High School. Palm Beach Symphony also

invited 19 music students (14 more than last year) to the luncheon, along with their teachers and chaperones. These deserving music students were nominated and selected as beneficiaries of the Palm Beach Symphony Instrument Donation Program. Guests were greeted by costumed Ballet East dancers from the cast of Palm Beach Symphony’s Children’s Concert Series production of Peter and the Wolf. They also enjoyed performances by a Palm Beach Symphony brass quintet, holiday carols from young musicians from Egret Lake Elementary School and Jupiter Middle School, and were serenaded as they left by a Jupiter Middle School string quartet.

The event ended with a world-class chamber music performance by a Palm Beach Symphony woodwind quintet.

MEMBER SOCIALS On concert evenings, Palm Beach Symphony members enjoy exclusive pre- and post-performance dining experiences where they talk about the music and its meaning in their lives. In addition, Palm Beach Symphony hosts a number of popular members-only events throughout the season, including a Season Opening Cocktail Reception, a Sunset Dinner Cruise, and a SeasonEnding Cocktail Affair attended by orchestra musicians and staff.

APRIL 2019 DONOR STORY Alexandra Cook

Holly Jolly Symphony Fête Gift Gathering Party

Evening with the Maestro sponsored by Patrick and Milly Park

Dr. Alexandra Cook is an Executive Committee member for Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony and an advocate for the Symphony’s music education and outreach initiatives. She is particularly proud of the Instrument Donation program. “Once you love music as a child, it’s always something you carry with you.” Alexandra’s love of music came at an early age from her mother, who was an opera singer and elementary school music teacher. Alexandra still plays piano and composes; she has written more than 100 songs and two full-length musicals. Her passion for music was also shared with her two sons, who both studied violin. Alexandra is interested in our new programs that bring classical music to vulnerable and isolated populations, such as elder communities, veterans, the homeless and unemployed, and other at-risk communities.

“What a perfect counterpart to a big symphony show. I loved the intimacy and relative informality of this one. Program selection and performance were superb. Enlightening and moving.”

“We are so very grateful for the Violin Trio’s Holiday Concert in the lobby of St. Mary’s in December. It was truly enjoyed by so many. Thank you for arranging these special events from the Symphony for our hospitals. I am sure that the beautiful music helped play a part in the healing process.” LISA BARRON, PEDIATRIC OFFICE SUPERVISOR AT ST MARY’S MEDICAL CENTER, WEST PALM BEACH

BEAUTY

April 12, Kravis Center – [Leon] Fleisher’s 90th year celebrations occasioned his appearance with the orchestra in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12, K. 414 … Observing the more than usual number of young people who attended, I wrote that they were fortunate 'to hear a pianist of legendary reputation play Mozart so beautifully and so meaningfully.'
