2016/17 SEASON 1

2016/17 SEASON

Dear Friends, What a pleasure to present another great season of wonderful music as the Artistic and Music Director of the Palm Beach Symphony. It is such a delight to program and bring to our fantastic community a combination of the best music of all time and new repertoire never performed by our orchestra. We open the 2016-17 Season with a concert at the intimate hall of the Society of the Four Arts. This program will feature two pieces by very well-known composers that are not often performed. I hope you will enjoy the combination of Schubert's Symphony No. 2 together with Beethoven’s incidental music written for Egmont (with a narrator and a singer as originally composed). In January we will be back at the Benjamin Hall in Palm Beach Gardens with a program entitled “Eastern Flavors”. It will feature well-known composers like Liszt’s very famous Hungarian Rhapsody No.2, and Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G Minor for big orchestra (what I like to call his “5th Symphony”) arranged by Schoenberg. Together with such famous composers, I will balance the program with a great, but not well-known piece, Borodin's Symphony No. 2. Our concert in February will be another experiment; a whole evening featuring our percussion section. I truly believe that the future of the symphony orchestra is moving towards presenting unique programs, in unique venues. So for this particular concert, we will have only percussive instruments (including the piano). I hope this will be an exclusive experience for our audience.

2

In March we will be back at elegant Mar-a-Lago with a program entitled “Winter Memory.” This concert will feature music written within a period of less than 100 years; the oldest being written in the 20th century by one of the greatest American composers, Gershwin and his An American in Paris. We will dedicate the whole second half to Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. We believe in supporting new music, and are delighted to premiere Andre Previn's new work Can Spring be Far Behind? I hope you will enjoy this mix between American music and the power of Shostakovich. As it couldn't be any different, we end our season at the Kravis Center with a program we have called "Russian Fire". The Russian repertoire is a favorite of all publics of any nationality, and I have created a program with 3 of the most loved Russian composers of all time. The main piece of the program will be Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, also known as "Patethique”. In the first half we will open the evening with a very lyrical piece by Rachmaninov which we will counterpoise to a very powerful and programmatic ballet by the great Stravinsky: The Firebird Suite. This is your orchestra and we look forward to an amazing season together with you! My very best wishes to a wonderful season,

Ramón Tebar Artistic & Music Director
