t’s been an incredible record-breaking year for Palm Beach Symphony. Audiences cheered our return to inperson concerts with tremendous enthusiasm. We were elated to welcome world-class soloists sponsored by our new Impresario Society. Our renowned Music Director Gerard Schwarz continues to achieve new heights of artistic excellence with the Symphony. “Now entering its 48th season, the Palm Beach Symphony has become a powerhouse orchestra of great repute, enjoying enormous local support and commanding international attention.… New York should be so lucky.” – Newsmax

What do I mean by record-breaking? After welcoming back audiences into the concert hall for the first time in 20 months, the total number of subscriptions and memberships grew by 100% from previous years. For the first time, all five Masterworks concerts were underwritten with funds from the Impresario Society. Nearly 400 guests enjoyed our 20th Anniversary Gala, surpassing attendance of all previous Galas, and our 5th Annual Holly Jolly Symphony Fête luncheon and Swings for Strings Golf Invitational were also sold-out. Thanks to people like you, Palm Beach Symphony can continue to perform inspiring Masterworks concerts with the finest orchestral musicians in South Florida and deliver excellent community outreach programs for Palm Beach County. Families throughout South Florida enjoyed the second televised Sounds of the Season broadcast as we expanded our partnership with CBS12, which will debut our first televised Fourth of July concert this summer. In the fall of 2021, the Symphony launched Eudora’s Fable: The Shoe Bird as part of the newly named Dale A. McNulty Children’s Concert Series to thousands of students in Palm Beach County. This collaboration of Emmy Award winners Gerard Schwarz, Habib Azar and Charlie Adler is set to educate thousands more throughout America via a partnership with PBS television broadcasting. With the introduction of the new Mary Hilem Taylor Music Scholarship Competition, Palm Beach Symphony has expanded our support of emerging musicians beyond high school with grant scholarships totaling $25,000 to three college students here in South Florida. As board chairman, Peter Gottsegen took the helm this season with clarity, dedication, and excellent board governance. We welcomed five new board members: Cathleen Black, Richard Brekus, Marietta Muiña McNulty, Karen Rogers and Laurie Bay. The combined efforts of the growing board, staff, and volunteers will forge forward grand plans for a phenomenal celebratory 50th anniversary in the 2023-24 season. As outlined in our impressive 2021-22 Season’s Impact Report, Palm Beach Symphony has experienced unprecedented growth directly due to the steadfast support of donors like you. OVERVIEW Record Breaking 48th Year Palm Beach Symphony, founded in 1974 as the first professional orchestra in Palm Beach County, only performing a few concerts each season with a part-time conductor and volunteer staff, has seen remarkable development, including new milestones in community outreach, music education, programming, and fundraising. In its 48th season, the Symphony continues its strong momentum of growth under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer David McClymont. Music Director Gerard Schwarz is leading spirited performances of Masterworks concerts with an orchestra that reaches 90 players, the mark of a major symphony orchestra. Recognized by The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County with a 2020 Muse Award for Outstanding Community Engagement, Palm Beach Symphony also continues to expand its education and community outreach programs. Children’s concerts, student coaching sessions and master-classes, instrument donations, and free public concerts have reached more than 56,000 students in recent years. After more than a year of limited audience capacity, Palm Beach Symphony returned to in-person concerts and social events this season, attracting a greater number of members, subscribers, and single ticket buyers who greatly anticipated the Symphony’s blockbuster season of world-class concerts with celebrated and renowned artists.

Performances at the Kravis Center were crowd pleasers, with thousands attending in-person at Dreyfoos Hall. Live streams provided those who could not be there in person an opportunity to enjoy every moment. Our partnership with CBS 12 of Sinclair Broadcast Group continued hosting the Sounds of the Season holiday concert broadcast, which reached nearly 100,000 people. We recently introduced a new membership group called the Impresario Society that plays a leading role in the Symphony’s efforts to deliver spirited Masterworks concerts with world-class guest artists. Through these patrons’ combined support, the Masterworks Season was completely underwritten, providing inspiring classical music performances by virtuoso soloists with first-rate orchestral musicians conducted under Maestro Gerard Schwarz’s baton. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural arts organization, we are committed to enhancing the communities in which we perform. Palm Beach Symphony dedicates its efforts to expand its reach, bringing classical music to people of all ages, backgrounds, and life experiences.

Music, Maestros, and Masters On March 11, 2022, Palm Beach Symphony hosted an interactive panel discussion with leaders in sports, music, and health at the Benjamin School. These stars of very different walks of life discovered, experienced, and explored the non-obvious similarities in musculoskeletal performance between all these legends and the biomechanics of how we all can stay fit with the everyday challenges of today’s environment.

Musical Masterpieces Palm Beach Symphony and Zero Empty Spaces collaborated to present Musical Masterpieces. In this wondrous mash-up of visual and performing arts, a collection of 38 unusable musical instruments were made into beautiful works of art by more than two dozen local artists. The pieces were auctioned off following the exhibition, partly benefitting the Symphony’s music education programs.

Randolph A. Frank Prize Two impactful instrumental music educators and Palm Beach Symphony Principal Cellist, Claudio Jaffé, shared a total of $10,000 as recipients of this year’s prestigious Randolph A. Frank Prizes. They were recognized as noteworthy performing artists and educators who enrich the quality of the performing arts in Palm Beach County.

EDUCATE The Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Music

alm Beach Symphony creates impact through The Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Music. It provides music education initiatives that are constantly evolving to deepen and extend student learning opportunities. The program has positively affected more than 60,000 students in Palm Beach County in recent years. Partially funded by a matching grant along with corporate sponsors and individual gifts, the Symphony offers vital music education programming which includes its Dale A. McNulty Children’s Concert Series, artist-in-residence programs, teacher resources, donated instruments, scholarships, awards, and inschool concerts.

Dale A. McNulty Children’s Concert Series Eudora’s Fable: THE SHOE BIRD

n the fall of 2021, Palm Beach Symphony presented Eudora’s Fable: The Shoe Bird, based on Eudora Welty’s book The Shoe Bird, collaborating with the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County and the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches. Over 5,000 students attended the production virtually, some of which also participated in pre- and post-concert workshops that focused on social and emotional well-being, literacy, visual art, and environmental science. The adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning children’s book was offered free to teachers for their students between November 1-30th and as a free family concert at the Eissey Campus Theater on October 24th. Under the direction of Music Director Gerard Schwarz, a 20-voice choir with members from the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches joined the Symphony and Charlie Adler, an Emmy Awardwinning voice actor, who served as narrator amidst a setting of visual art on stage that was especially commissioned by Ed McGowin for this performance. The production of the musical fable, filmed by a multiple Emmy Award-winning American director, will reach thousands more students and families nationally through a collaboration with PBS broadcasting.

Mary Hilem Taylor Music Scholarship Competition Palm Beach Symphony held the inaugural competition of the Mary Hilem Taylor Music Scholarship that was funded and made possible by Felicia Taylor Gottsegen. This competition was created to honor Mary Hilem Taylor, Felicia’s mother, and help ease the financial burden for young music students across South Florida. Palm Beach Symphony awarded three winners with a total of $25,000 in cash prizes and a side-by-side performance opportunity with the Symphony’s principal musicians.

Additionally, for the first time in the Symphony’s history, all five Masterworks Concerts were underwritten by generous members of the new Impresario Society, which launched in the fall of 2021. Under the direction of Music Director Gerard Schwarz, Palm Beach Symphony celebrated a “Renaissance season,” that drew star virtuosos from across the world. 20th Annual Gala, A Musical Journey Palm Beach Symphony raised more than $600,000 on February 21, 2022, at the 20th Annual Gala, A Musical Journey led by gala Chairs James R. Borynack and Adolfo Zaralegui, at The Breakers Palm Beach. More than 350 guests attended this unforgettable event in memory of the Symphony’s late president Dale Archer McNulty, a new record for attendance. In addition, guests enjoyed a memorable performance by Dion Sellitti, the 2022 Lisa Bruna B-Major Award Winner. Auction items for the gala included: a three-night, four-day yacht charter, five NetJets flight hours, a car of the year experience, a trip to Casa de Campo, and more.

Golden Baton Society Dinner Golden Baton Society Honorary Chairmen Patrick and Milly Park hosted the inaugural event at the private The Beach Club Palm Beach. One hundred guests joined the evening to honor Lois Pope as the third recipient of the Golden Baton Society Award; an award presented yearly to a patron who has given, accumulated over the years, more than $250,000. A Palm Beach Symphony virtuoso violinist treated guests to the exquisite sounds of a Stradivarius violin.

Impresario Society Dinner Lugano Diamonds sponsored an exquisite one-of-a-kind dinner experience at a picturesque oceanfront home. Guests enjoyed music curated by our Emmy Award-winning Maestro Schwarz performed by Palm Beach Symphony musicians. The magical evening celebrated our new Impresario Society members, who enjoyed gourmet cuisine prepared by world-class chef, Michelle Bernstein.

Fifth Annual Holly Jolly Symphony Fête Palm Beach Symphony’s annual holiday luncheon returned after its cancelation in 2020. Through the combined efforts of the Palm Beach Symphony Ladies Guild, Chairs Amy and John Collins, Holly Jolly Host Committee and Music Men, the Holly Jolly Symphony Fête was a sold-out event with 350 guests in attendance, all thrilled to be helping dozens of students and school music programs with much-needed instruments. The event raised more than $200,000 and presented 15 instruments to deserving students and school music programs. We also honored the 2021 Instrumental Music Teacher of Year, Wesley Lowe of The King’s Academy.

Swings for Strings Palm Beach Symphony had its most successful golf tournament, with nearly $60,000 raised and sold-out attendance. Significant support from HSS Florida, Wellington National Golf Club, Chervo, CIBC Private Wealth, PNC Private Bank, and Wellington International fueled the tremendous achievement of the event. In addition, leading up to the event, MLB sports agent and bestselling author Burton Rocks held the Symphony Rocks Invitational on the Breakers Ocean Course and presented the Symphony with a $4,000 donation.

Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony members re-ignited with inperson social events to support the Symphony’s education initiatives. Highlights from the season included an instrument donation drive hosted outdoors at Grandview Public Market, collecting a dozen instruments, hosting a local celebrity bartending fundraising event at Square Grouper, hosting a recital featuring student musicians from the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, and collaborating with the Norton Museum of Art to host a recital featuring the winners of the Mary Hilem Taylor Music Scholarship Competition. palmbeachsymphony.org | Impact Report 2021-22
