JAHJA LING Conductor

Jahja Ling’s distinguished career has earned him world-wide acclaim for his musical integrity and depth of expression. Now in his eighth season as Music Director of the San Diego Symphony, Mr. Ling has received the highest praise for his live performances, local and national broadcasts and recordings and recently the Orchestra has offered him an evergreen contract. Under his leadership, the San Diego Symphony has been designated as a Tier One major orchestra by the League of American Symphony Orchestras and reached a new level of unprecedented artistic excellence with its audience record attendance and balanced budget for the last eight years. Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, of Chinese descent, Mr. Ling began to play the piano at age 4. Subsequently Mr. Ling earned a master’s degree from Juilliard and a doctor of musical arts degree from Yale University School of Music. He received Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductor’s Award and the Leonard Bernstein Conducting Fellowship at Tanglewood. Subsequently, he was selected by Mr. Bernstein, who became one of his most influential mentors, to be a Conducting Fellow under his tutelage at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute. Mr. Ling is the first and only conductor of Chinese descent who has conducted all of the major orchestras in the North America as well as most of the prominent orchestras in Asia and Europe.

LOLA ASTANOVA World renowned pianist

Born in the former Soviet Union, Lola’s journey in music began at the age of six when her mother, a music teacher, gave Lola her first lessons. By the age of eight Astanova began appearing as a performer, achieving first international note before she turned twelve. In1996 Lola performance in Paris was featured in a UNESCO documentary Prodigies of the 20th Century. But Astanova’s promising young career had little chance to evolve in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse so she made a decision to move to America and start everything anew. But it is her passion for performing, reminiscent of the Romantic age virtuosi, that remains Lola’s greatest love. It is fitting therefore that her Carnegie Hall debut paid a rich and profound debt to her Romantic roots with a special Tribute to Horowitz concert that took place on January 19, 2012. The concert, chaired by Donald Trump and hosted by Dame Julie Andrews, became a historic occasion as Astanova delivered a triumphant performance in front of a sold out crowd of three thousand. “...Ms. Astanova made a deep impression in her vivid tribute to Horowitz on his very own Steinway. She’s a true virtuoso in the old style,” wrote the Seattle Post Intelligencer. “…Astanova rocked Carnegie Hall... She danced with the piano!” exclaimed the New York Daily News. Following the concert Lola was honored with the prestigious Vladimir Horowitz Distinguished Artist Award. Since achieving acclaim, Astanova has used her talent, time, and influence to support and bring attention to various charitable causes helping to raise funds for cancer research, New York’s 9/11 memorial, and constantly encouraging her fans to support local art and education initiatives. Outside of her music career and charitable work, Lola is a fashionista, a foodie and a lifelong soccer fan.

DR. ANDRES M. KANNER EPILEPSY Dr. Andres M. Kanner, Professor of Neurology who is considered one of the world’s leading experts in behavioral aspects and treatment of epilepsy, has joined the University of Miami’s Department of Neurology. As Chief of the Epilepsy Division, and Director of the International Comprehensive Epilepsy Center his primary goal is enhancing the evaluation, comprehensive treatment and surgical program for adults with epilepsy. Most patients are unaware that surgery could end their seizures. University of Miami has the oldest comprehensive epilepsy program in Florida. “Dr. Kanner has extensive international experience and expertise in running a surgical program therefore, he is the ideal person to lift the treatment, prevention and care of epilepsy to the next level.”

DR. CARLOS SINGER PARKINSON’S DISEASE Dr. Carlos Singer, Professor of Neurology and Chief of the Movement Disorders Division along with colleagues at the University of Miami continue to research the cause and develop new treatments for halting the progression and moderating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. Through a private grant Dr. Singer is looking at changes in the Brain through MRI to see if intervention before symptoms start can prevent or further delay onset. Also for those who see a decrease in the effectiveness of medicine, state of the art surgical procedures are available. One of them, Deep Brain Stimulation, relies on a medical device, which is implanted in the brain and works similarly to a cardiac pacemaker. Electrical impulses are targeted to the areas of the brain involved in motor control and muscle function and the electrical stimulation suppresses the symptoms of the disease. Through this procedure, University of Miami physicians are able to greatly improve the patient’s quality of life.

Simon de Pury, Chairman of de Pury de Pury hosted the Live Auction featuring five luxury lots which raised $505,000. Star Jones led the evening’s paddle raise, which raised $343,900. The Foundation also partnered with charitybuzz.com for an online auction which runs through November 6th at www.charitybuzz.com. Dinner Chairs for the event included Hugh Jackman & Deborra-Lee Furness, Khaled AL Muhairy, and Marc E. Lippman, M.D. About Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research

Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research was created in 1996, when Grammy-nominated songwriter and philanthropist, Denise Rich lost her daughter Gabrielle, a vibrant 27-year-old actress and Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor, to acute myelogenous leukemia. Gabrielle’s mother and sisters, Daniella Rich Kilstock and Ilona Rich Schachter, believed the best way to honor Gabrielle’s memory was to create a Foundation that would fund the best and brightest scientific investigators with the hope that less toxic treatments, and ultimately a cure, might be discovered.
