“None of us are rated, and we don’t want to be,” Ron Conklin said. “We want it to be a fun sport.

We play with people of all abilities.”

It doesn’t take long to learn the sport, and Rolla is willing to do what she can to teach others in the community.

When friends told Ron Conklin they couldn’t wait to get back to their home in The Villages so they could play pickleball, Conklin was perplexed. He, like many others, had never heard of the game.

“I used to play tennis and since my shoulder is not what it used to be, I looked into it,” Conklin said.

“I brought it to the CDD and they gave us the basketball court at Creekside.”

If the CDD thought they were off the hook with the transformation of the basketball court, they were in for a surprise.

“Linda (Rolla) and the ladies went to the CDD meetings and kept asking for our own courts,” Conklin said.

Persistence paid off, and, the following year, new courts were built by the Village Center.

“I have the community distribution list for 8-11 a.m. on Saturdays; no reservations are needed, you just come and play. The players rotate in and out of games,” Rolla said. “Even in the heat of the summer, we had people on the court every day. It’s getting a lot of use.”

Other times, the courts can be reserved through the center.

The sport was developed in Washington State in 1965 by Congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell. After playing golf, the two returned to Pritchard’s home on Bainbridge Island to find their families sitting around with nothing to do.

The property had an old badminton court, but a full set of rackets could not be found, so the men improvised and played with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The following weekend, Barney McCallum joined in, and the three men created the rules, relying heavily on badminton. Their goal was to create a game the whole family could play together.

“The sport is popular all over the country now,” Rolla said.

“The kids are playing it indoors at school in New York.”

For many, the game is the perfect alternative to tennis.

“It’s an easier game than tennis,” Rolla said. “I have talked to a lot of tennis players, and pickleball is now their sport, because it is not as strenuous for them.”

Hilda Conklin, an avid tennis player, does admit that it can take some time to get used to the different rules of the game.

The game is an economical sport as well, especially since the Village Center has paddles and balls for people to use, and sneakers are the shoe of choice for the

WHAT ARE YOU QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION?

WHAT IS YOUR AGE? 64 HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN GRAND HAVEN?

I have lived in Grand Haven for the past 11+ years. I bought my first home here in 2005.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO GRAND HAVEN?

We originally planned to buy a townhouse in Plantation Bay. My in-laws lived there. The townhouses they were building weren’t complete, and the sales people told us if we wanted to see a completed townhouse, go to Grand Haven. Grand Haven was a more developed community, with a different look and feel. Coming from living on a bay in New Jersey, I liked that I could walk a couple hundred feet down the path and be on the esplanade and on the Intracoastal Waterway.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE PRIORITIES SHOULD YOU WIN THE ELECTION?

1. Our community is well established and maturing gracefully. I’m speaking of the physical structure and not the residents. I would spearhead identifying all elements of Grand Haven that can and do age and need to be under regular scrutiny and inspection. I want to avoid unknown surprises that would cause us all undue

inconvenience and/or expense.

2. I’ve attended all the regular meetings and workshop meetings of the CDD in approximately the last three years and only missed one. I consider myself involved and informed regarding the activities and issues facing the CDD. I would make sure that we prioritize all communication to the community and make sure we keep the residents fully informed.

3. “Watching our money” is a catch phrase I’ve coined for my campaign. I believe that my No. 1 responsibility to the residents of Grand Haven is to “watch” the money that is collected by the district and treat it as if it were my own hard-earned funds as we evaluate how and where the CDD spends it.

I’m curious, opinionated, resultsoriented and frugal. Being here for 11 years, I wanted to understand my community so I got involved.

I am a director on the Grand Haven Master Association (HOA). I wanted to understand where my money goes, so I began to attend CDD meetings, all meetings both regular and workshops. I wanted to understand how a CDD works, so I read Florida Chapter 190, which creates, defines and governs Community Development Districts. I believe that being active and informed qualifies me to have an opinion on issues, and I speak up at meetings. In private life, as a divisional director for a technology company, I’ve managed budgets over $200 million, and I know my way around a P&L, balance sheet and income statement. I know how to manage costs and expenses and get a job done under budget and on time.

Grand Haven was in its infancy when I built my home in 2001.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO GRAND HAVEN?

It was a beautiful community, and I saw a unique opportunity to be involved in helping Grand Haven develop into one of the premier places to live in Palm Coast. I have been active on a board/committee/task force every year since 2001.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE PRIORITIES SHOULD YOU WIN THE ELECTION?

1. Maintain/improve the CDD amenities and other CDD assets.

2. No special assessments.

3. Maintain/improve safety and security.

4. Improve communications between the CDD and the residents.

5. Develop an Oak Tree plan for the entire community.

WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION?

I’m a longtime resident of Grand Haven and currently serve as a supervisor on the development’s CDD. I had been the treasurer of the Grand Haven Master Home-

In community affairs, I was the president of the Flagler County Chapter of SCORE, served as the Palm Coast area manager for the 2010 Census verification and currently an AARP volunteer providing free income tax preparation for local residents.

My business background includes 26 years of management experience, including 20 at the Westinghouse Corp., with responsibility for daily operations and long-range planning with several companies. f you see Ann DeLucia lying on her driveway, check to see if she is holding a camera before you dial 9-1-1. The Grand Haven resident, and photographer, will do what is necessary to get her picture. DeLucia, best known as the president of the Flagler County Art League, added photography to her artistic repertoire several years ago.

“I was trying to get a photo of an anole on a stalk, and a neighbor walked by,” DeLucia said. “I told her I was OK, and she said, ‘I know, I saw the camera.’”

DeLucia was born in Queens, New York, and grew up on Long Island. She was the youngest of three, the spoiled baby — “If anyone from that generation was really spoiled,” she said.

A nurse, she would work nights in the emergency room one night a week, as her kids were growing

up, an opportunity to “keep her hand in it.” In the 1960s the family moved to Connecticut, and she was hired to do wellness health promotions.

“I began a lactation program for moms, a whole healthy baby program for moms, which got me introduced to Roslyn Carter, who founded Every Child by Two, a nonprofit health advocacy organization dedicated to protecting children from disease through the promotion of vaccinations” DeLucia said. “She loved the program we were doing. I have a photo of the two of us.”

She said that mostly women worked at CIGNA. Women with little time for themselves.

“I would pull in a mammography unit in the parking lot at work and do mammograms, provide dental hygiene, a lot of support.”

DeLucia said. “We didn’t do anything unless we could prove we were saving money and saving lives.”

DeLucia would write up program evaluations, publishing some in medical journals.

She ultimately became boss of a medical clinic of 5,000 employees.

DeLucia became involved in the Flagler County Art League while she and her husband, Joe, were still snowbirds, living part of the year in Grand Haven and part of the year in New Hampshire.

“We were snowbirds for five years,” DeLucia said. “We were thinking we would only come down for a couple of months, but then it was seven months here, and five there.”

The final decision to cut their real estate ties with New Hampshire occurred one Christmas holiday when the couple woke up to water leaking in from the snow outside. Their weather “luck” followed them as Hurricane Ivan prevented them to get their homeowners insurance, and the electricity was out in Grand Hav-

en on their moving day.

“Like most everyone I talk to, I had a friend here,” she said. “We drove all around Florida, just to see where we wanted to be. The amenities here looked like something we wanted to do.”

The same friend, Joan Howard, also introduced her to FCAL. “She got me started and I jumped in, and there I was on the board,” DeLucia said.

FCAL was formed in 1978 by a

dozen individuals who wanted to paint together. Now DeLucia estimates one-third of the members in the league are also residents of Grand Haven.

“What I would really like to get across to people about the art league is people move here and they find a family,” she said.

“If you come in when we have events going on at the art league you are going to find like-minded people.”

Adding easy to care for plants to your home decor can be healthy for you.

n the 1980s, NASA — yep, the people who brought you the space shuttle — did a clean air study to find the best way to clean the air in the space stations, and learned that certain plants are effective at removing benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylen, xylene and ammonia from the air.

All these chemicals that can contribute to headaches and eye irritation. One plant actually releases oxygen into the air at night.

Wonder where these chemicals are lurking? Many are byprod-

ucts of chemical-based household cleaners, paint — even furniture. With improved windows and insulation, many of these chemicals get trapped within our homes.

Most of these plants are fairly easy to grow. Two considerations if you decide to add plants to your home: children and pets. Plants should be displayed out of the reach. Hanging plants can reduce the chances of your cat enjoying an afternoon salad, and the children from dumping dirt on your floor. Plants that are toxic have been noted in the description.

TRY GROWING THESE PLANTS Aloe – An easy to grow, sun-loving succulent helps clear formaldehyde and benzene. It is a good plant to have on the counter for cuts and burns, too.

Spider plant – One of the hardiest plants, easy to grow and propagate.

Perfect for a hanging basket, this will even produce pretty little white flowers. Called a spider plant because of the way the babies grow out on their own strands from the mother plant, this battles benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene (a solvent used in leather, rubber and printing). This is considered a safe plant for pets.

Gerbera daisy – A colorful flowering plant that removes trichloroethylene (think dry cleaning). Perfect for the laundry rooms and bedrooms with lots of light.

Sansevieria (aka mother-in-law’s tongue) – An excellent plant to filter out formaldehyde (commonly found in cleaning products, toilet paper, tissues, and personal care items), this is perfect for the bathroom counter. It thrives on low light and steamy conditions. Another benefit may be a good night sleep as this plant absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen at night (the opposite of most plants). Adding this plant to your bedroom might give you a little O2 boost while you sleep.

Golden pothos – Great plant for tackling formaldehyde. This is a fast growing vine that grows well in a hanging basket.

Ever think of hanging a plant in your garage? This one would be great since car exhaust includes formaldehyde.

Needs bright, indirect light, and moderate watering. This is a toxic plant and should be kept away from small children and pets.

Chrysanthemum – You will want the floral mum, not the garden type, for indoors. A healthy addition for a living room or office, this plant helps filter out benzene (found in glue, paint, plastics and detergent). It needs to be near an open window with direct sunlight.

Red-edged dracaena – This tall-growing shrub (up to 15 feet) is perfect for rooms with high ceilings and moderate sunlight. It will help remove xylene, trichlorethlene, and formaldehyde (introduced indoors through lacquers, varnishes and gasoline).

English ivy – Another great hanging basket plant that will filter the air of unwanted pollutants. Please do not plant outdoors, as this is described by the National Park Service as, “an aggressive invader that threatens all levels of forested and open areas.”

Dracaena – This can grow to 12 feet in height and combats pollutants from varnishes and oils.

Bamboo palm – This is a small palm, 5-7 feet, that thrives in low light indoor places in your home. Good for filtering out benezene and trichlorethlene.

Philodendron – Low maintenance, chemical filtering vine, but not a good choice if there are children or pets in the house.

Chinese evergreen – Easy to care for and filters out a variety of air pollutants, and begins to remove more toxins as time and exposure continues. Even with low light, this produces blooms and red berries.

Pat Kort and the love of the craft — every kind of craft Variety and persistence keep this crafter creating.

An antique mahjong tile gets a second life,framed as a pendant.

Standing on tip toes, Pat Kort can see what she has stored on top of the shiny black Husky tool chest in her closet. The chest is described on a home improvement store site as an “all-welded steel construction and powdercoated finish, make it a great choice for heavy-duty tool storage.” But the slide-out drawers aren’t filled with tools. They are filled with beads.

“Who said this was only for men?” Kort laughed.

The entire closet, and her craft room, are filled with various tools, supplies, books, and equipment that allow her to create whatever suits her fancy on any particular day. Her current passion is polymer clay creations.

Her love of beads and jewelry making started when she stepped over the threshold of a shop in Maine.

“It was like waking into a treasure chest,” she said.

She began taking classes, something she recommends everyone do before starting any new craft and investing in supplies.

“Why spend a lot of money on equipment before you know if you like it?” she asked. “I take classes, but I am also self-taught.”

She designs her jewelry using a variety of techniques and materials. A simple sea shell, scooped from the sand, is wrapped in silver wire and ready to be added to a necklace, while an antique mahjong tile has been repurposed as a pendant. Some of her creations are fine jewelry, while others, especially her new polymer clay pieces, are more whimsical.

She joined the First Coast Polymer Clayers Guild in St. Augustine, and now creates colorful clay figures used for bracelets, necklaces and wall hangings. Currently is she creating 80 clay tiles for a class with Donna Kato, a wellknown clay artist, in Las Vegas.

Like most crafters, she doesn’t stick to one craft. She has several projects going at one time and

there are some that she has been working on for a decade. She doesn’t apologize. There are too many wonderful things for her to explore and try, and she is going to do as much as possible.

“I am like a small child,” she said. “You go into a store to do one thing, and then something else catches your eye, and you want to try it. If you are like me, one thing isn’t enough.”

At night, while watching the TV with her husband, she works on the border pieces of a needlepoint rug that was begun 10 years ago in Maine, and intended to be placed in front of the hearth.

“It is going to be done by December,” she states with determination. “And, now nobody is going to be walking on it. It’s going in my bedroom.”

Not all projects are completed as quickly as crafters initially plan, and Kort says that’s OK. “It doesn’t have to be done today, as long as you don’t put it away,” she said. “Have it out so it’s there to put in a few stitches.”

I’m sworn to secrecy as to what she is making in her shop, but Kort is working on Christmas presents, and I wish I was on her list!

A WRITER BY DESIGN

Not only can Jim Harter design a building, he can also write a poem about the process.

Jim Harter is an architect, a poet, and an Eagle Scout. Step into his home office and you realize all of this at once. The Eagle Scout certificate is framed on the wall over his desk, seven books of his published poetry are pressed between bookends, and awards for designs and commendations for service on various committees share the remaining wall space with family photos.

In the ninth grade he knew he wanted to be an architect.

That was the same year he wrote and submitted three poems for his high school magazine. He included all three in his first book, “Mindsong.”

“Mindsong” is special to him, but not because it’s the only book he had published in hardcover, or because it was his first. This book includes artwork he and his nephew, David Rodale, drew. Rodale died of AIDS in 1985.

He read one of his poems, “Please don’t weep for me,” as the eulogy at the funeral.

“It actually was befitting to me as well,” Harter said. “It has to do with life, actually.”

He received an award for “Best in Energy Efficient Design” for the Rodale Press Operations Center in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and was featured in the national magazine, Interiors.

“I got involved in the environment and saving land, and wrote

poems about that,” Harter said.

He opens a binder and says, “This is my ego book.” The book is thick with press clippings and photos of his architectural achievements. He has a patent for the design of an open space planning assembly which was used in the Rodale Press building.

Harter loves playing with words and sees the correlation between architectural and word building.

“Sometimes I get an idea and I get up in the middle of the night to jot it down, or enter it in my computer,” he said.

His poetry is simple, direct and thought provoking. He writes about life. One poem, “The Greatest Casualty Is Being Forgotten,” was written for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Harter and his wife, Shirley, moved into their Grand Haven home in 1999, and as an architect he had his own ideas of how he wanted the lanai. Extending the covered and screened-in patio out further from the house gives it a unique look.

His designs aren’t only at home; he also designed the renovations to the Creekside Amenities Center, and did preliminary designs for the Palm Coast Community Center office building, the Surfside Estates Community Center, and the Palm Coast Tennis Center facility building.

Currently he is involved with the Palm Coast Cultural Arts and Performing Arts Center.

Harter has written more than 1,300 poems, vignettes and essays, many included in his seven books of poetry already published and available on Amazon. Two additional books are in progress.
