With the holiday season quickly approaching, residents in Palm Coast and Ormond Beach are starting to prepare their wallets for the biggest shopping season of the year. According to Flagler Chamber of Commerce President Rebecca DeLorenzo, where they chose to spend their money has a bigger impact than most residents realize. “Small businesses are the backbone of any community,” she said. “The dollars you spend in the community stay in the community. The taxes you pay when you shop here will help fund services our government offers our citizens.” Ormond Beach Mayor Ed Kelley said some local citizens have yet to discover the variety of businesses in their own community.

Mayor Ed Kelley

Rebecca DeLorenzo

“Often times, people don’t realize what local businesses are available to them,” he said. “Most often they’re run by people who live here, your children are in same schools, they go to the same churches, and they’re involved activities that you are involved in. The small businesses bring a sense of community to the community.” DeLorenzo said that 85% of the chamber’s members are small businesses, and it’s important for residents to buy with them whenever they can. “They’re our neighbors,” she said. “They live, work and play here, so we should try to support our neighbor as much as possible when we shop this holiday season.”

Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rick Fraser said he recently read that 80% to 90% of business licenses are for small businesses, and that they are the “lifeblood of employment.” “They tend to be more focused locally,” Fraser said, “because they’re members of the chamber and other organizations. That’s who we cater to, so it’s important that we patronize the small, family-owned businesses.” “We have very, very good small business, from specialty stores to places to eat,” Kelley said. “The service that you receive from a local business is often more personalized than the big box stores outside of our area.”

“I like Granada Gourmet, Preppy Beach, Elements of Design and Purple Dragonfly. Businesses like that are important because they bring new products that aren’t carried in big box stores. They provide a home-town feel, and you don’t have to go to Daytona.”

Carol Smith, an Ormond Beach resident who works at Florida Hospital Flagler, enjoys creating paper beads. She said it is a stress reliever for her, and helps with the pain in her hands affected by osteoarthritis.

For one woman, making jewelry is physical therapy Food packaging is recycled into jewelry by Carol Smith.

JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

Carol Smith looks carefully at the packages in the grocery store because she knows soon, she might be wearing them. Smith may glance at the sugar and fat content, but her focus is on the package colors. Smith creates earrings, necklaces and bracelets — her own designs — out of everything from dog food boxes to old Christmas cards. Occasionally, she incorporates other materials into her creations, like the light-weight discs she punches out of Arizona ice tea cans. Her left hand doesn’t completely close around the very thin, wooden, dowel-type tool she is

wrapping the paper around — it can’t. She was diagnosed with osteoarthritis several years ago. Before the diagnosis, she suspected she might have the disease since it runs in her family. “My hands were swelling,” she said. “I was in denial for a long time. Suddenly I couldn’t bend them, and it was worse in cold weather. It was really bad.” Not wanting to turn to pain medication early, she looked for alternative ideas. She saw paper beads in a magazine and wondered how they were created and immediately decided to teach herself the craft. That was three years ago. Smith, a nurse in the radiation oncology lab at Florida Hospital Flagler, knows stress can contribute to medical problems. “It keeps my fingers nimble,” she said. “It puts me in a different place, which in turn helps the arthritis. If I don’t use them, I am going to lose them.” Smith’s recycled wonders are often given as gifts, though she also sells them at Southeast Jewelry in Flagler Beach. She is always on the lookout for packaging with turquoise colors to match her hospital uniform. “For me, it’s a therapy craft,” she said. To push her limits, she also creates jewelry using a quilling method, an intricate art form that uses strips of special paper to roll and shape into decorative designs. It’s the idea of using recycled materials to create jewelry that appeals to her the most. “I love recycling,” she said. “You see them and you don’t know what it was. It’s opened up my imagination.”

OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of the bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint in the body, the disorder most commonly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine. Osteoarthritis gradually worsens, and no cure exists. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight and other treatments may slow progression of the disease and help improve pain and joint function. Source: Mayo Clinic

Ever seen the Holiday Boat Parade?

Yacht to.

The 30th-annual Palm Coast Holiday Boat Parade marks the start of the holiday season in Flagler County. JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

Santa on a surfboard, palm trees wrapped in lights, reindeer decorations made from palm fronds, and holiday boat parades — this is Christmas in Florida. The annual Palm Coast Holiday

Boat Parade is a favorite for those on land and sea — well, the Intracoastal — for an evening of lights on the water and shoreline parties. The Palm Coast Yacht Club has been hosting a boat parade for the past 30 years — with only one or two having to be canceled due to weather, specifically thunderstorms and fog. “It’s all about safety,” event Capt. Robert Ulis said. “The rules primarily focus on the safety of the people and the boats.” The event has changed throughout the years. One change will be the absence of the “big ship” — The Sundancer. The yacht, used for breakfast and dinner cruises, and a regular entry in the parade, was sold recently, and will not be in this year’s parade. “This started out a very formal event, and over the years has become more casual,” one of the organizers, Bob Bescher said. “You used to have to be a member of the Yacht Club to participate, prizes were awarded, and everyone came back to the Yacht Club for dinner.” Membership is no longer required; there are no entry fees and no prizes – unless the crowd

,cheering from the shore counts. “It’s become more of a community event,” Bescher said. “People with homes along the route have their holiday parties, and there are two public viewing areas at Waterfront Park and Cimmaron Basin.” This year, the organizers have asked everyone with a dock along the parade route to turn on their dock lights. “With the lights decorating the boat, it’s hard to see,” Ulis said. “There are a couple of areas that are really dark if the docks aren’t lit.”

CHECK IT OUT When: 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5 (rain date: Sunday, Dec. 6) Route: Boats will gather in the Cimmaron Basin and head east to the ICW. Turning south, the parade will pass the Tidelands, Canopy Walk, St. Joe Walkway, Waterfront Park and Island Estates before turning around at the Grand Haven Gazebo for the return

TO PARTICIPATE

Boats must be decorated, have operable regulation running lights, be able to travel under power (5 knots), the full distance from the Cimmaron Basin to the Grand Haven Gazebo and back. Registration deadline: Nov. 30. Call 283-5166.

Three boats that won’t be decorated are the two Flagler Sheriff’s Office boats at the beginning and end of the parade, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation boat. “We will also have Tow Boat U.S., just in case,” Ulis said. The Grand Marshalls for this year’s parade will be Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre and Palm Coast Mayer Jon Netts.

There’s always ‘Hope for Christmas’ Tomoka United Methodist Church is offering support for those grieving during the holidays.

For the holiday season, many look at it as a time of family, joy and generosity — at least that’s the usual story, according to Tomoka United Methodist Church Pastor Brian Johnson. “I’m reminded that, for a lot of people,” he said in a recent video, “there are memories and feelings that go along with Christmas that are hard.” Johnson is offering a special service for people who experience reminders of lost loved ones, hurt, pain or grief experienced in the year or years past. “Hope for Christmas” is designed to acknowledge and give support when the holidays hurt because he too understands what that’s like. “The first year we offered Hope for Christmas, my dad was struggling with colon cancer and was running out of options, including experimental studies at major university hospitals,” he said. “That year, I lit a candle to represent the fear of the unknown. Over the next year, the doctors had nothing left to try, and my dad was weary after a 10-year battle. He passed away last September 2014. So last year, I lit a candle for the grief of losing my dad. This year, in a new church, I will light a candle for the struggle

of wanting to call, but knowing I can’t. I walk away each year with a greater hope, and a thankfulness for what I do have: faith, a great family, my wife and daughter, a church and friends.” Though the goal is to offer support for anyone who needs it, regardless of church affiliation, or not. All are welcome. “My hope is this service meets people in their hurt, and helps to reshape their holiday experience,” he said. “I did this for two years in Orlando, and it was clear, there was a clear need being met.”

FANTASY LIGHTS EVENT SCHEDULE

PalmCoastObserver.com

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2015

FANTASY LIGHTS AT TOWN CENTER: a Flagler County Rotary Club tradition A new arch of holiday lights will greet visitors as they stroll through Central Park in Town Center during the month of December. Festivities will begin with the lighting of the trees tradition on Monday, Nov. 30, at Central Park in Town Center. Over 40 displays will light up the park every day in December from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This year is the 10th-annual event put on by the Rotary Club of Flagler County. On scheduled nights, families can bring the kids for photos with Santa, train rides around the park and live festive music. Entry to the light display is free of charge, but donations to help support the Rotary Club of Flagler County are accepted. “It takes a lot of community members to put this on each year,” club president Matt Maxwell said. “Volunteers help us assemble the displays. Local businesses and individuals sponsor the cost of the lighted displays. Our Rotary Club members operate the monthlong event and enjoy the reaction of the children and adults when they visit. It has become a signature event for the holiday season in Flagler County.” The Rotary Club plans to have a progressive dinner on the opening night Monday, Nov. 30, with an appearance of many local restaurants.

ANASTASIA PAGELLO STAFF WRITER

The inspiration for the annual light show sprung from Chairman of Fantasy Lights Committee Bill Butler’s daughter, Tiffany Butler. On a vacation over 15 years ago, while the family was visiting their hometown in Evansville, Indiana, the family took a drive through a light display. Tiffany, then 10, was fascinated by the animated displays. She asked her father if he could arrange a similar display in Palm Coast. A few years later, in 2002, Tiffany died of a heart condition. Overcome with grief at losing his daughter, Butler kept remembering her excitement for the light display. He joined the Flagler County Rotary Club in 2003 and he proposed Tiffany’s idea to the board. He was granted approval to start the light display as a fundraiser in 2006. Fantasy Lights started out with only 16 displays; this year 40 displays will light up Central Park in Town Center. The money raised from the event will go to help local and international charities.

SCOTCH COOKIES (EXTRA GOOD)

Carole Benson was given this recipe almost 50 years ago by her favorite aunt, who was 70 years old at the time. Known for her baking skills, she made hundreds of these cookies every year for her church and friends. Benson's visit with her aunt filled her with inspiration to carry on this family tradition.

OF FLAGLER COUNTY

INGREDIENTS

n 1 pound of light

brown sugar n 2 sticks of butter (Benson recommends using real butter: It makes a difference) n 2 eggs n 1 tablespoon of cinnamon n 4 cups of flour

(386) 447 - 2202

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cream the sugar and butter together, then beat the eggs and add them in. Combine the cinnamon and regular flour and add them in. 2. Divide the mixture into four parts and wrap it in wax paper for easy rolling. Place it in the refrigerator for two hours. 3. Roll the mixture very thin and cut with a round, scalloped edge cutter. Bake at 350 degrees for eight to 10 minutes. 4. Store in an air-tight container. Cookies taste better when they are allowed to age. (Makes 70 cookies)

NO-TOPPINGNEEDED MOLASSES CAKE

CRANBERRY APPLE CASSEROLE

Darleen Sylvester's grandmother used to make this recipe in an old blue tin cake pan. She remembers being disappointed if one wasn't in the cupboard waiting for her.

CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS n 3 cups of sliced and peeled apples n 1 package of fresh cranberries n 1 cup of sugar

INGREDIENTS n 1 cup of raisins soaked in cold water n 1 1/4 cup of sugar n 3/4 cup of butter n 1 egg n 1 teaspoon of vanilla n 3/4 cup of molasses n 2 cups of flour n 1 teaspoon of salt n 1 teaspoon of cinnamon n 1/4 teaspoon of cloves n 1 teaspoon of baking soda

CRUMB TOPPING INGREDIENTS n 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal n 1/3 cup of chopped pecans n 1 cup of brown sugar n 1/2 cup of melted butter n 1/3 cup of flour

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cream together the butter and sugar. Then add in the vanilla and the egg. 2. In a sifter put in the flour, salt, cinnamon, cloves and baking soda. Add all the ingredients to the creamed mixture with the raisins. Save the raisin water and add cold water to it to make it one cup. 3. Mix it all together and pour into a 9-by-12-inch buttered pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes. When you can smell the cakes, take it out of the oven.

INGREDIENTS n 1 nine-inch graham cracker crust, already prepared n 1/4 cup of cold water n 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin n 2 1/2 cups of dairy eggnog n 1/2 teaspoon of rum extract n 1 cup of whipping cream n 1/4 cup of maraschino cherries, chopped n 1 one-ounce square of semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely grated over sweetened whipped cream

Joy Keasey is a 30-year-old part-time Ormond Beach resident who holds a membership at many organizations. INSTRUCTIONS 1. BOWLING TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR FLAGLER TOTS With the help of community members, Flagler County Toys for Tots will help over 1,500 kids experience the joy of Christmas this year.

P

alm Coast Lanes bowling alley was entirely dedicated to the Toys for Tots program for three hours on Saturday, Nov. 21, with over 120 community members bowling to support the cause. With the help of the bowl-athon, last year, the program raised $2,200 to supply gifts to 1,771 Flagler County children in need. The Flagler County chapter of the program was started by Gary Heiser, in 1986. This year marked Flagler County’s Toys for Tots’ 29th anniversary. The program is still run within the family by Gary’s brother, Tom Heiser, and Caldwell Banker Premier Properties. Toys for Tots is predicted to help at least 2,000 kids in Flagler County this holiday season. “Helping children who would otherwise not have a Christmas teaches them the joy of giving,” Michelle Heiser said. “Hopefully, through getting these gifts, they will receive a positive message and learn the joy of giving to others.” To donate, or for more information. visit toysforPhotos by Anastasia Pagello tots.org. — ANASTASIA PAGELLO

Christmas Come True received almost 1,000 “Chance and Lucky” stuffed animals on Tuesday, Nov. 17, to be given out as presents to Flagler County children in need this holiday season.

“This year has been very exciting,” PetSmart Store Director Joe Carwell said. “The people shopping at the store really stepped up for local kids in need.” Enough stuffed animals were donated with community support and through PetSmart to give each child two stuffed animals —

Welcome

to the Rotary Club of Flagler County

Fantasy Lights!

The Rotary Club of Flagler County is proud to present to the community our 10th annual Fantasy Lights event in Palm Coast's Central Park. This project is our contribution to the community. For the entire month of December each night we will light up the walkway around the lake with 40 animated holiday light displays. We have scheduled local groups to entertain on several nights during the month and each night we will have holiday music playing in the park. We will also have a snow machine to create snow on scheduled nights for the young and young at heart. There will be train rides weather permitting and Santa on scheduled nights and Santa's Village. The light displays are sponsored by local businesses and individuals. This is a community effort that is a joy to put on. We enjoy the enthusiasm of children and adults when they participate in this yearly event. I encourage all of you to join the Rotary Club in Celebrating the holiday season. Entry is free, however donations are appreciated for Rotary to fund its many community projects. Bring visiting guests and make your holiday in Flagler County special.

Happy holidays to you & yours! Matt Maxwell, President Rotary Club of Flagler County
