Give your veggies a

lift

Meet the Biedenbachs: a Palm Coast family of four with a raised a garden that produces fresh fruits and veggies all year-round. ANASTASIA PAGELLO STAFF WRITER

“There is a sense of pride in growing your own food,” said George Biedenbach, who has raised gardens as a hobby throughout his life. “One of the main lessons to learn in life is: Instead of expecting the world to take care of you,

learn how to take care of yourself.” From a street view, the Biedenbachs appear to live in an attractive, ordinary house in the heart of Palm Coast. Yet tucked past the luscious green lawn and behind a picket fence is an impressive display of fresh produce. The family of four has been growing fruits and veggies at the house for the past two years. Growing up, Biedenbach was always inclined to grow his own gardens, and eventually raise his own greenhouse in Baltimore, Maryland. He later received a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biol-

ogy, and now follows his passion for nature as the director of conservation programs at Georgia Aquarium’s Dolphin Conservation Field Station. Biedenbach and his wife, Amy, hope the experience of growing and maintaining a garden will help their kids to gain respect for the environment, as well as learn how to become self-sufficient. “Exposing the kids to raising a garden is not just about the fun of going out and harvesting the produce,” Biedenbach said. “There is a much bigger lesson to learn,

like how to take care of yourself, understanding responsibility and knowing where your food is coming from. The garden provides them with real-life experiences, and it gives them a connection with the environment.” Though the Biedenbachs recognize that raising a garden is not for everyone, they suggest that every family can benefit from exposing their children to nature. “Not only is having the skill set to grow your own food an essential life skill, just like changing car tires and sewing on buttons,

BENEFITS OF INSTALLING RAISED GARDEN BEDS n When the garden is raised above ground level, it is less prone to flooding from excess rain. Therefore, there will be less of a chance that mildew and mold will grow and destroy the produce. When the bed is built out of raised cinderblocks, the sun naturally heats up the thin, porous cement and will quickly dry the soil of excess moisture. n When the garden is placed in a raised bed, the cement, or tarp base will help control the soil content in the garden. During the planting seasons, the soil can be renewed, and the gardener can easily control the contents of the soil. n The structure remains temporary and can easily be moved to a new location in the yard. This flexibility is also useful when trying to find the optimal place in the yard that will allow the plants to receive the most hours of direct sunlight. n The concrete blocks used to create the raised bed are relatively affordable, and can be used for more than one purpose. The hollowed center of each block can be used as a small planter for other plant species, creating an attractive border for the garden. n The raised bed can be built to whatever height necessary. For example, the garden can be built up to table height so it can be accessed by wheelchair bound people.

The Biedenbachs chose to grow their garden in raised beds so the structure can be easily moved, and the soil content can be easily controlled. The garden produces on average a few pounds of produce every week during peak summer and winter seasons.

but the experience helps the kids to respect the environment,” said Amy Biedenbach, who is the park service specialist at Washington Oaks Gardens and Faver-Dykes State Park. “Every time Emma or George Jr. see litter, they attempt to stop and pick it up. We hope our kids will carry out a life of sustainability from the experiences of raising a garden.” In three, 4-by-8-foot raised garden beds, the family has raised a large variety of produce. In the summer, they plant tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, Japanese eggplants and zucchini. Between September and February, they grow plants that can survive a cold spell, such as sweet potatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, onions and beets. “We are constantly harvesting the produce all year long,” Amy Biedenbach said. “We probably collect multiple pounds of vegetables every week during the sum-

The plants in a large pot at the historic MacDonald House on East Granada Boulevard are maintained by volunteer Flo Minardi.

Arboretum, 3065 W. State Road 40, said he favors in-ground gardening, which requires less attention (mainly watering), but he sees the value of container gardening for decks, patios or any place a person wants to dress up a house, townhouse or apartment. Additionally, the containers themselves can be decorative, and people can make attractive arrangements. He cautions that a container must have holes in the bottom to allow drainage. There’s a lot to know about plants, soil, containers, irrigation, maintenance, etc., and classes are often available. The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences has a lot of information on edis.ifas.ufl.edu. Because of limited space, this article will only deal with the design of a container garden, with information provided by the University of Florida IFAS. The first step in your design is to determine which side of the container is the primary view. Then, place several plants in the container so the tallest plants are in the back and shortest plants are at the front. Repeat some of the same plants if the container is large enough. This helps create unity and continuity. Use a plant you want as a focal point in the center of a pot as an “anchor” around which colorful annuals and perennials can be

PLANTS FOR VISUAL IMPACT

Certain plants or plant combinations add extra zing to container gardens: n Large-leaved plants like palms and tropicals. n Ornamental grasses, including bamboo, add an extra dimension of movement in the breeze. n Hot color combinations also draw the eye and add interest. Combinations that attract attention include mixes of burgundy/ purple-leaved plants with silver; yellow or chartreuse-leaved plants; or yellow flowers mixed with red or orange flowers.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2016

5B

OTHER DESIGN TIPS

n Think big! The latest trend is to use large containers, and the larger, the better. For greatest impact, the container needs size, color or dramatic shape. n Incorporate small trellises, plant supports or small decorative objects to add height and drama to a container garden. n Sometimes you can increase the dramatic effect of a small container by simply placing it on a pedestal or otherwise elevating the container to bring it closer to eye level. n Groupings of containers create impressive displays. However, don’t use a hodge-podge of containers and plants. Unify the grouping by using one or more of the following: same-shaped container in different sizes; same type of container (concrete, glazed pottery, fiberglass, etc.); same color of container; same dominant plant form in all containers (spiky plants or trailing plants); or same accent color in all containers. n Shady sites need brighter colors for impact. Colors under shade often appear more muted than in sunlight. n Use containers in garden beds to define or divide space, accent a garden border, or add color to a planting during its off-season. Container gardens can be permanent components of the garden or temporary accents used when needed. n Take advantage of the portability that containers allow. Rearranging containers creates a fresh composition. n It may be necessary to relocate containers with the season, that is, moving sun-loving plants out of shadows to sunnier environs as the days shorten, or moving containers with tender plants to protected corners during cold weather. n Remove tired container gardens. Shift them to less visible areas when plants need a little “R&R” to recover and achieve their former glory.

Another arrangement uses an upright plant, a mounding plant, and a trailing or weeping plant. The mounding plant forms the overall mass of the planting while the upright plant catches the eye and the trailing or weeping plant softens the container edge. For a classic look, use a single specimen plant to create an air of simple elegance, such as a large succulent, palm, cycad or ornamental grass.

European Village Farmers Market: 54 vendors and counting Time to start shopping local: The European Village will host a farmers market every Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. featuring a vast variety of fresh, locally produced and organic products.

ANASTASIA PAGELLO STAFF WRITER

Photos by Anastasia Pagello

Amy Winter, Soraya Zapata and Nancy Larive enjoy a stroll through the farmers market together after a light lunch in European Village.

Cars were crammed into grassy nooks for overflow parking along Palm Harbor Parkway, as residents crowded European Village for the grand opening of what many believed to be Palm Coast’s first farmers market on Sunday, Feb. 14. The market boasted over 50 vendors, each selling handmade crafts and local produce. The market organizer is Scott Campion, owner of the Cork & Pint bar in European Village. “I started brainstorming with the city about a year and a half ago, for ways we could help revive the local businesses in Palm Coast,” Campion said. “My goal through implementing a farmers market in Palm Coast was to get people excited to shop local again. Eventually European Village stood out in my mind as the perfect venue to host a fresh market.” Campion suspected foot traffic in European Village to pick back up with the additional vendors and produce. The first day of the market was met with an overwhelming response from local residents. “We already sold out of all our gourmet popcorn,” said Kim Sunshine, owner of Victory Popcorn.

Shaun Miller shows off his produce from Fresh Start Hydroponics Farm.

EUROPEAN VILLAGE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY On Sunday, Feb. 21, European Village is set to celebrate turning a decade old. The Gourmet Farmers Market will feature a DJ, live musicians and professional fireworks. Visit The European Village Gourmet Farmers Market Facebook page for more information.

“I had to go replenish our product, and it is only 2 o’clock.” With the market in high demand, plans of expanding European Village’s parking are already being put in place. “We have the capacity to grow the market to 80 vendors,” said head advertiser Heather Thompson, of HT Production Co. “Seeing the wonderful response from the community, it is likely that a parking expansion will be implemented sometime this year.” Starting in the first week of April, over a dozen artist vendors will be invited to join the market. The artists will be invited back for the first Sunday of every month. “European Village is back on the map,” proclaimed Gail Wadsworth, the Flagler County Clerk of Court, as she gazed around at the masses of people enjoying their Sunday afternoon browsing through the community market.

Right plant, right place JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

To be a successful gardener, you have to know where you live — not just your address, but your soil type, weather conditions and how likely you are to suffer drought. “Right plant, right place” is a mantra for those in the know. The type of landscape that is right for you really depends on where you live, not only in the state, but in the county. Conditions vary from the west side of the county to the canals and the ocean. “The first thing I would recommend, before planting, would be to come in and let us test your soil and water,” said Maxine Floyd, horticultural agent and master gardener coordinator at the Flagler County Extension Services. Testing is free at the extension services office, and for those who live by the ocean, a salinity test can also be requested. Well water should be tested, but those watering with city water can get the results directly from their city, since that water is already tested on a regular basis.

Those who move to Florida thinking gardening is going to be effortless will soon find out differently. In many ways, Southern gardening has more variables, including salt water, excessive heat, cold, drought and high humidity. New gardeners often forget to consider the humidity. “People tend to over-water in the summer because they think it’s too hot, but with our high humidity, too much water will create more fungal and bug problems,” Floyd said. “With water, less is usually more.” Selecting plants and designing a landscape can be done simply from your home by logging onto the University of Florida website, floridayards.org. The extension service at 150 Sawgrass Road in Bunnell has master gardeners available to answer questions and help with problems. What to plant also depends on how much effort you want to put into your garden. Those who enjoy gardening can grow roses and other plants that require a bit more care. Those wanting a low maintenance yard should look for Florida native plants like coontie and the American beauty berry. “You can’t kill them; they are meant to be here,” Floyd said. “They are not going to become intrusive and create problems.”
