School District implements new procedures after bullying incident at Matanzas High School The district is making sure school leaders are properly trained in maintaining records of bullying complaints.

It all started in sixth grade, when Ashley Stuart’s friendship with one of her schoolmates soured.

The former friend, a girl about the same age, started hassling Ashley.

The bullying — which was ultimately documented by the Flagler County School District and resulted in the bully’s removal from school — continued all the way through last year, when Ashley was in 11th grade. But, with help from the school district, the worst of it has ended, and Ashley’s family prompted the district to implement new procedures for handling bullying.

Although the bullying from a former friend and a small group of other girls had lasted for years, Ashley said, the schools she attended, Indian Trails Middle School and Matanzas High School, hadn’t been keeping records of her family’s complaints. Things came to a head last year.

“Last year was the worst,” Ashley said. “They would follow me down a hallway. ... They’d walk past me and laugh at me at lunch.

I’ve been followed into the bathroom.”

In one instance, said Ashley’s father, Jeff Stuart, Ashley called her mother from the bathroom after the group of girls followed her in, picking on her and calling her names.

“She called her mother on the cell phone, and my wife could hear the kids laughing and saying stuff,” he said.

Mostly, he said, the bullying had been verbal. In a couple of instances, the other girls would hip-check her as she walked down the hallway.

Ashley was afraid for her safety.

And she made complaints to the school, as did her parents, Jeff Stuart said.

“Usually things calmed down a few days after, and then it would go back to the same,” he said.

So Jeff Stuart contacted Tim King — the school district administrator who handles discipline — to hold a meeting, only to find that Indian Trails and Matanzas hadn’t kept clear records of the family’s repeated complaints.

“We learned at that meeting that there were no documented

instances of any of the previous contacts that we had made,” he said. “So from sixth grade to 11th grade, there was no documentation. ... I was pretty frustrated that the school had not kept records of that stuff.”

But the family’s contact with King, King said, led the district to implement procedural changes this past October, when the district updated its policy on bullying, to make sure that reports of bullying are properly handled.

“What we started doing, especially after me working through that incident, was closer monitoring of the reports that come through — making sure we have those documented,” King said.

King acknowledged that the schools had previously not kept sufficient records. The district’s new policy, he said, lays out specific steps for administrators to

keep records on bullying reports, investigate them, and report them to the district.

“It gives all of the followthrough. ... It’s explicit in detail,” he said. “It wasn’t anybody’s intention previously to not have everything be transparent, but this new policy makes it transparent from step one. There’s no guess work.”

Under the new policy, when someone reports bullying, King said, schools take a formal report and start an investigation, which must be completed within 10 days.

“Schools then send to me the initial report form, so that I know that they’re starting a bullying investigation,” he said. “I place it into a binder here, and then within 10 days, that (bullying) investigation needs to be complete.”

About two dozen homes in Painters Hill, north of Flagler Beach, stand unprotected from the potential effects of any future major storm. Hurricane Matthew washed away the dune that would stop ocean waves from battering them down and flooding their interiors with seawater.

Another 600 homes near the center of the county’s coastline are also vulnerable to flooding.

“On Painters Hill they lost 30 feet in front of those houses,” County Administrator Craig Coffey told commissioners at a Jan. 23 County Commission workshop. The county, he said, is still vulnerable to the threat of neighborhoods reflooding and homes falling into the ocean if northeasters and super tides deplete bluffs or affect areas with no dunes.

Now the county is trying to fix that problem — and protect the other most vulnerable portions of the county’s coastline — before the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season begins in June.

Coffey and County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin made the trip to Tallahassee Jan. 23 to seek a $5.35 million Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant to help repair the damaged dune.

The County Commission voted unanimously that morning to give Coffey the authority to pledge up to $4.65 million in county money to match the state grant, to strengthen the county’s position when negotiating with FDEP. Flagler County is one of six in the state of Florida that has been offered an FDEP grant for dune restoration work. But a total of $1.5 million of the county’s match for that money would have to come out of a county beach restoration fund, leaving nothing leftover. The county has also spent millions on Hurricane Matthew cleanup, and although some of that money could at some point be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, county officials don’t expect to receive that money for months, Coffey said.

Hansen spent 27 years in the Navy and retired as a captain before becoming a government relations administrator in the Washington, D.C., area, according to a county government news release. He received a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and a masters in financial management from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

“We just want to welcome Greg, and look forward to working,” Commissioner Dave Sullivan said after Hansen took his seat. “We’ve got the full five commissioners now. That’s the way we were

The contractors doing the work would have to get special permits in order to work during sea turtle nesting season, which starts May 1, and some nests would have to be moved to protect hatchlings from the impact of the dune work.

Restoring the dunes along the entire 18 miles of county dunes to their pre-Hurricane Matthew condition, Coffey said, would ultimately cost much more: a total of about $38.3 million, of which $15 million would be within the city of Flagler Beach.

The state of Florida is covering the cost of repairing dune damage in Washington Oaks Gardens State Park.

Hurricane Matthew, Coffey said, brought opportunity along with its devastation. The disaster eased the process for the county to get approval for the long-planned-for Army Corps of Engineers beach renourishment project.

“Had Hurricane Matthew never happened, it would have been an uphill battle for us to get this funding,” Coffey said. “Now we have an opportunity, because of the storm and the way it devastated our beach, to actually get this funding.”

Hansen’s appointment to the five-seat Board of County Commissioners means the board will no longer be in

danger of having a split 2-2 vote.

“We are already bringing him up to speed, and he has jumped in with both feet,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said in the news release.

A high-tech financial company could bring as much as $16.5 million per year into the local economy and create 250 jobs — if it decides to move here. The Flagler County Commission is trying to nudge it in that direction.

At a special meeting Jan. 23, the commission voted unanimously to approve a $500,000 incentive package to lure the company — the identify of which remains confidential during negotiations — to the county.

“The company has been recognized by Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, American Banker, Crain’s, Bloomberg Business and Inc. as being in the forefront of the financial sector,” according to a county staff report.

The company is considering several options, including a location in another state and one in another county in Florida, Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Helga van Eckert said.

“We’re definitely on the short list,” she said. The incentive package, she said, “gives a more definite, solid presentation when we’re sitting at the table.”

The $500,000 package would be the largest the county has ever granted, and would be paid out over seven years and contingent on the company producing and maintaining jobs. Each job created would be rewarded with $400 per years in incentives, for five years.

The company anticipates creating 50 jobs in its first year, then an additional 100 the second year and another 100 the third year. The average salary would be $47,000 — about 150% of the county’s average annual wage, according to the county report.

The company would be paying about $2.4 million in salaries during its first year, about $7 million the next year, and about $11.8 in following years.

The company’s impact on the local economy would also lead to the creation of 91 “indirect jobs,” according to a report by CareerSource Flagler Volusia.

The company would be leasing space in Flagler County, not buying, Van Eckert said.

Several people spoke during the commission meeting’s public comment period to say they supported the incentive offer.

“I think it’s a great project,” said Bob Cahill, a Palm Coast resident and a member of the county’s Economic Opportunity Advisory Council. “Every year, we see our children and grandchildren ... finish school and go out to college, and never come back. And I think this is the type of job that would give them an opportunity to come back to Palm Coast.”

County Commissioner Charlie Ericksen agreed. “People are saying, ‘Where’s the jobs so we can stay in town? Where’s the jobs so our kids can stay in town?’ We’ve go to do something,” he said.

The pickup truck driver argued with others at the scene of the crash while two victims were trapped in a damaged car, according to witness reports.

While 55-year-old Palm Coast resident Terri Lynn Wickel and 17-year-old Matanzas student Margaret Ann Wickel were trapped inside a burning, crushed sedan on Palm Coast Parkway, the man who’d just run a red light in his pickup truck and struck their car was carrying on an argument with others on the side of the road.

Tyler Lane Wilkinson — the 25-year-old felon with a string of traffic citations who was driving the pickup — had been in a road rage incident with a motorcyclist on westbound Palm Coast Parkway moments before the crash Jan. 16. It continued after.

One 911 caller narrated what he saw to the dispatcher. “There’s an accident, people are arguing ...

I saw the whole thing happen; it started with a bike almost hitting the truck that almost cut off the bike ... the bike was mad, the guy in the bike puts his middle finger, the guy in the truck tries to run over the guy on bike. But they were going into each other that they ... was driving and they ended up crashing with that car.”

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, only Wilkinson’s Chevy Silverado actually struck Wickel’s Ford Fusion.

As the 911 caller tried to check to see if anyone was hurt, a woman can be heard yelling and swearing in the background. The 911 caller tried to calm people down.

“Guys! Arguing is not going to help anything,” the 911 caller said.

A witness who said she was a nurse told the caller that someone in the car had no pulse.

Other calls about the crash were coming in to the dispatch center.

A 60-year-old Daytona Beach woman died Jan. 20 after she was injured in a car crash on Palm Coast Parkway about 300 feet east of Florida Park Drive.

Beverly Ann Campbell was driving a blue 2003 Dodge Caravan east on Palm Coast Parkway that morning when she struck a deer, and stopped in the lane of travel and got out of the van, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office crash report.

by Palm Coast resident Frank Mannarino, 79, then struck her van from behind, and knocked her to the ground.

Campbell had “possible broken ribs and a broken arm on her right side,” and was taken to Florida Hospital Flagler, according to the report. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening at the time of the crash. Crash victims whose injuries are considered lifethreatening are generally taken to Halifax Health, which has a trauma unit.

Mannarino had injuries to his knees and chest pain from the airbag deployment, and was also taken to Florida Hospital Flagler, according to the crash report.

Fire rescue personnel who arrived at the scene of the crash noted that Campbell’s headlights were not on, although the van was still running. Mannarino said they had not been on when the crash happened. The crash report states that it was still dark out.

City of Palm Coast staff removed the deer from the road.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

The first 911 call about the crash came in at 6:49 p.m. Rescue personnel declared Terri and Margaret Wickel dead at 7 p.m.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched at 7:07 p.m., arriving at 7:40 p.m. after Palm Coast Fire Rescue staff and Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

The motorcyclist did not wait for authorities to arrive.

Wilkinson was interviewed at the scene by FHP investigators, who ordered a blood draw on him.

Wilkinson, a Palm Coast resident who’d attended Matanzas High School, had been charged in 2011 with selling marijuana, and pleaded no contest and was placed on drug offender probation. He was cited the same year for having illegal tinting on his windows.

He was sent to state prison in 2013 after violating his drug offender probation. In 2014, he was cited for speeding and for having an open container of alcohol in his car. In 2015, he was cited for running a stop sign, and for not having his seatbelt on.

Charges in connection with the Jan. 16 crash are pending against Wilkinson, according to the FHP report.

DeLorenzo steps down as Chamber president Rebecca DeLorenzo has been president since 2013 and will now lead the American Red Cross in three counties.

County Commissioner Donald O’Brien called Rebecca DeLorenzo “a force of stability” at the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce. Now, DeLorenzo, who was hired in 2007 and has been president and CEO of the organization since 2013, will step down to take a new position as executive director of the American Red Cross Space Coast Chapter covering Brevard, Flagler and Volusia counties. Her last day with the chamber will be Feb. 24.

DeLorenzo said she came across the new position on LinkedIn. “As I started looking at the mission of the Red Cross, it spoke to my heart, and it seemed like a cool opportunity for my next chapter.”

She said her family intends to remain rooted in Flagler County, a place she has come to love.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I joined the chamber,” she said. “But I would say the highlight was getting to know and having a deeper respect for Flagler County. We are small in size, but we rally together. We’ve been through some hard times, but to see how the small business community persevered was amazing, and I’m proud to have been a part of it.”

He said she was a quick study and took advantage of professional development opportunities to grow as a manager. But, he said, “Sometimes people see a path for their career, and they want to take it. I wish her well.

I’m proud of her.”

Chamber President Rebecca DeLorenzo said one of the best pieces of advice she’s ever received was to “keep your chin up.”

She said she has also learned over the years to find “small victories.”

“You can’t accomplish great things every day,” she said. “But there is something great to take away from every day.”

A new low in squandering tax dollars: $8 million community center

As the editor of a local newspaper, I feel an increasing responsibility to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. The Palm Coast Observer is not perfect, but we are doing our best to be a newspaper you can trust.

As a parent, what is to be done? How can I help my children to be skeptical without becoming cynical?

My wife, Hailey, and I decided to combat the fake news problem by helping our children become better citizens. We sat with them on the couch on Monday night and learned about the branches of government. We talked about laws and how they’re made.

Dear Editor: According to your paper, the new city government has accepted the challenge. Prior city governments have wasted money on dog parks, built and maintained some of the most expensive street medians in Florida, built a very ugly City Hall that only they wanted, and financed a money-losing golf course/country club for the folks in the “C” section.

The new City Council, as one of its first official acts, is going to waste/spend/squander 8 million American dollars on expanding the Community Center!

It seems the fine folks that have meetings at the Community Center need more room, so they (the powers that be) are going to shut down the Community Center for over a year so the folks will have more room to meet.

While it is shut down, these folks will have to go to other venues to meet. Well, duh: If these other places exist, why don’t they meet there? Or better yet, they could build their own building and meet 24 hours a day at their own expense — not at mine — and the city government could take the 8 million American dollars and build a pit bull dog park.

Dear Editor: My name is Jake Scully, and on Dec. 17, 1992, my father, Vincent Scully, was killed while riding his bicycle on Old Kings Road.

I will spare you the details of the impact that tragedy had on my family, his friends and those he helped in this community.

But to his wife, nine children, their families and the hundreds who came to pay respects, the loss was, and still is, huge.

Not a day has gone by since New Year’s Eve, 2016, that I do not think about how Kelvin Smith was killed on the same road and essentially for the same reason.

Both areas of Old Kings do not have bicycle/multiuse paths.

The difference is that my father was killed south of Utility Drive, and Kelvin was killed within two miles of Matanzas High School.

It is terribly sad that the Smith family has to suffer the enduring loss of the death of Kelvin due to this preventable tragedy. Speaking from experience, nothing and no amount of time will erase their pain.

However, the city of Palm Coast can do something: Prevent further tragedies by building a bicycle path from Frontier north to connect with the paths that go to Matanzas.

This city has some of the most wonderful bike paths I have ever seen, but it is completely illogical not to have this one.

An incident in which a dog was spotted tethered to the top of a trailer being towed south on Interstate 95 behind an SUV in Palm Coast Jan. 11 is still under investigation.

State animal cruelty charges are possible, depending on whether detectives determine that there was criminal intent to be cruel to the dog, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Strobridge said.

Video of the dog cowering on top of a trailer on I-95 went viral after a Palm Coast woman named Brenna Cronin recorded it with her cell phone and posted the video to Facebook.

The dog’s owners are St. Johns County residents, who told investigators that they were taking the dog — a pitbull terrier named Zeus — to go hog hunting when Cronin took the video, according to a Flagler Humane Society news release.

The dog’s owner contacted Flagler Animal Services the day after the incident after learning that Animal Services was seeking information.

Flagler Animal Services issued the dog’s owner a $35 ticket for violating a county ordinance on safe transportation of animals.

mal Services and St. Johns County Animal Control visited the owner’s home to investigate. The dog stayed in its owner’s custody.

“The owner has many dogs living both inside and outside that were all well cared for,” Flagler Animal Services Officer Bryan Denker said in the news release.

“All the kennels were clean and there was nothing criminal or out of the ordinary.”

Florida law doesn’t currently regulate how dogs may be transported in vehicles, but a bill titled “Dogs in Vehicles,” Senate Bill 320, introduced Jan. 10 by Sen. Greg Stuebe of Sarasota, requires dogs transported in an open pickup truck bed or trailer to be in a ventilated container or securely tethered to prevent falling or injury.

That bill has certain exceptions for hunting dogs.

Overall crashes in Flagler dropped between 2015 to 2016, but number killed on roads doubled The Florida Highway Patrol has created a new initiative to track high crash areas and devote more law enforcement resources to those spots.

The total number of vehicle crashes in Flagler County dropped from 2015 to 2016, but the number of people killed in crashes more than doubled, according to data released by the Florida Highway Patrol.

There were a total of 1,377 car crashes in Flagler County in 2015, and 12 people killed. In 2016, there were 1,104 crashes, and 25 people killed.

Statewide, both the overall number of crashes and the number of people killed in car crashes rose from 2015 to 2016: There were 374,639 crashes in 2015 and 2,940 people killed, and 391,028 overall crashes in 2016, with 3,053 people killed.

The increase in the number of crashes prompted the FHP

to launch a new initiative called “Arrive Alive,” in partnership with other agencies including the Florida Department of Transportation, National Transportation Highway Safety Administration, Florida Sheriffs’ Association, Florida Police Chiefs’ Association and other agencies.

The initiative uses data to assess high crash areas and high crime areas to target law enforcement resources and road safety assessments, according to an FHP news release.

The initiative was unveiled Jan. 17, with press conferences scheduled Jan. 17 to Feb. 13 to provide information about the new program to the public.

Of Flagler, Volusia, Putnam and St. Johns Counties, Flagler saw the most dramatic increase, percentage-wise, in deaths from

traffic crashes from 2015-2016.

Other counties had higher numbers, but less of a jump in terms of percentage. Volusia County had 87 deaths from crashes in 2015 and 110 in 2016; Putnam had 20 deaths in 2015 and 26 in 2016, and St. Johns had 37 deaths in 2015 and 35 in 2016.

Of all of those counties, Flagler was the only county to see the 2016 number of overall crashes (1,104) decrease from both the previous year (1,377) and from 2014 (1,202). Volusia had a drop from 2015 (8,854 crashes) to 2016 (8,707). With those exceptions, the number of overall crashes in each of the four counties increased consistently from 2011 to 2016. BRIEFS Palm Coast woman found dead near SR 100 bridge A Palm Coast woman was found dead Jan. 24 in the water near the State Road 100 bridge in Flagler Beach.

The woman, who has been identified as 68-year-old Janis Washburn, was found at about 11 a.m., according to a Flagler Beach Police Department news release.

A passerby contacted the Flagler Beach Police department about what appeared to be a body floating in the water of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Police officers dispatched to the scene found Washburn dead.

They identified her the night of Jan. 24 and notified her family.

An autopsy was scheduled for Jan. 25 to determine the cause of Washburn’s death, but the Police Department did not suspect foul play, according to the news release.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office are aiding in the investigation.

There were 11,000 full or partialday absences at Bunnell Elementary last year. The eight-member community problem solving AIM (Attendance Increase Massively) team in Jennifer Colindres’ class decided those numbers could, and should, be improved.

“I was shocked when I saw the numbers,” Colindres said. “I told them I don’t think these numbers are righ; you should look at them again.’”

But the numbers were right.

The students have been crunching numbers of attendance rates from 2014 through 2016.

They will soon have early 2017 numbers.

So far the students have given presentations in 14 classes.

“We have been teaching kids around the school why attendance is important and why they should come to school,” Ivey Orndorff said.

Their data includes full-day, partial-day, and early-dismal absences.

“Normally kids are on vacation, or they have appointments during school days, or they are sick,” Kevin Wolfe said. “We have told them to try and plan appointments so they won’t miss out, and ask their parents to schedule them when they are not in school — on holidays and weekends.”

“I like school, and I want to get a good job in the future,” Anya Subachev said. “I want other kids to get good jobs in the future instead of being homeless or not achieving in school.”

On Friday, Jan. 20 Rylee and Kevin attended a school staff meeting, and the team takes turns updating Principal Marcus Sanfilippo on their progress.

by Kevin’s mom Dr. Shelby Wolfe, for team T-shirts, and with Dragon Financial for incentive prizes.

“After each quarter, we are doing movies for the students with perfect attendance,” Ivey said.

“Every quarter, whoever gets perfect attendance gets entered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire,” Anya said.

“At the end of the year we will have a drawing for a bike,” Kevin added.

To involve their fellow students in their project, the team began an essay contest about absenteeism for grades 3-6 and a coloring contest about what they like about school, for the kindergarten through second grade.

“It’s easy to think, ‘It’s no big deal to let them go home early,’ but the way it adds up is pretty staggering,” Colindres said.

From a height of 80 to 90 members years ago, the Flagler County Shrine Club has “dwindled down to nothing,” said Steve Johnson, who was named president of the club at a Jan. 19 ceremony in Jacksonville. Today, only about five or six members attend the monthly breakfast meetings at Golden Corral, in Palm Coast, he said.

To be a member of the club, he said, you have to be a Master Mason. Johnson finds fulfillment in being a member of the club, especially because of its philanthropic work: Shriners Hospitals for Children provide care in 22 cities.

For the past 25 years, Bud Tanis has been the president of a club of woodcarvers. On his 86th birthday, Tanis announced to the club, formerly known as the College Carvers and now known as the Palm Coast Woodcarvers, that he would be stepping down.

Where are the whales?

BRIEFS Pink Army 5K raises $9,554 for women

Volunteers began watching for the North American Right Whales on Jan. 2. son documenting the whales as they passed between St. Augustine and Ponce inlets. This year, Hampp said she and the 225 official volunteers haven’t seen any.

“Their movements are changing, so they are not showing up in their traditional habitats,” Hampp said. “Normally by midto late-December we are starting to see the whales in the northern part of Florida and Georgia.”

One mother and her calf were spotted off the coast of Georgia earlier in the month, and then in New Smyrna Beach. Hampp said they may have been farther off shore or passed the Flagler coastline at night.

An extensive data base is kept on the whales and their movement. Spotters know them by their callosities, permanent white spots formed by “whale lice,” across their backs.

“We had a slim year last year too,” she said. “The total number of whales sighted in the Southeast U.S. was less than 50. In Florida we had about eight.”

The one male sighting this year, referred to by Hain, was entangled in a rope, later removed by specialists. This was the second known entanglement for this whale.

“According to the New England Aquarium, 83% of the known whale population has been entangled at least once, many twice,” Hampp said.

The North American Right Whale population is watched closely by scientists, trained volunteers, and beachgoers, but this year, it’s been way too quiet.

The lack of sightings on the East Coast is a concern for scientists like Jim Hain, who monitors the whales from Marineland and Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

“We are seeing a dramatic drop off in numbers this year,” Hain said. “Only three mothers and their calves and one adult male.”

“The scientists believed they had a good handle on what the population was, growth rate and what it was doing, but in the past five years that’s all changed,” Hain said. “Now there’s a lot more uncertainty as to what’s going on.”

Outliers, whales found outside of expected areas, may account for some of the whales.

“We had one mother and her calf that swam around Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico and were spotted off the coast of Corpus Christi in 2004,” Hampp said.

“The following summer she was in the Bay of Fundy.”

There are teams in Hammock Dunes and the Surf Club, where those who live in the condos on the shoreline can watch from their balconies.

Flagler County officials are dedicating the Wadsworth Park soccer fields to the late County Commissioner Frank Meeker, and will unveil a monument to him Jan. 28.

“Mrs. (Debbie) Meeker chose the date because it’s Frank’s birthday,” Commission Chair Nate McLaughlin said in a Flagler County government news release.

“He would have been 62, and this is a good way to celebrate the day.”

Meeker died July 22, 2016 having battled cancer.

The dedication will be held at 10 a.m. in a garden created near the Wadsworth Park flagpole.

“The only way we can get the data is to have all of these eyes.”

Hampp takes her two-seater open plane out twice a week, flying to the Matanzas Inlet north to the St. Augustine Inlet and then south to the Canaveral Seashore.

The New England Aquarium is the keeper of the catalog of whales and their sightings.

“From markings, they know who hasn’t been seen,” Hampp said. “With all of these people, this is probably one of the best collaborative research efforts you can find.”

“The rub is, at a time of an environmental and conservation need, funding is becoming more difficult,” Hain said.

Sarah will represent Flagler County at the 73rd Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by the Florida Times-Union, in Jacksonville on March 4. The winner of that competition will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. “I studied hard, and my mom quizzed me,” Sarah said after the competition.

She said the hardest word she was asked to spell was “matriarch.”

DID YOU KNOW? The clean and jerk is a composite of two weightlifting movements, most often performed with a barbell: the clean and the jerk. During the clean, the lifter moves the barbell from the floor to a racked position across the deltoids, without resting fully on the clavicles. During the jerk, the lifter raises the barbell to a stationary position above the head, finishing with straight arms and legs, and the feet in the same plane as the torso and barbell.

After its initial year of dominance — in which Matanzas won both district and regional championships in 2016 — Matanzas has repeated as district and regional champions, for the first time in Matanzas sports history.

“I am excited for the lifters, their families and our school,” coach Sara Novak said. “I am beyond excited that this success has come, being the program is only 5 years old.”

The Lady Pirates were led by newcomers as well as team veterans. Lorian Givens, Kaylee Mandt, Julianna Smith and Chiara Longo all won their individual championships. Givens was a transfer from Crescent City, and Smith and Longo are both lifting for the first time. Only Mandt is a returner from the previous season.

Danielle Thompson, Bianca Secor and Sarah Dillion each took runner-up. Of the Pirates’ 19 lifters, 18 placed in the Top 6. All girls who didn’t win will now be placed into a regional pool, and the top scores will advance to the state meet.

“As I told all the girls that night, I am very proud and honored to be their coach, because they make all the hard work and dedication worth every minute,” Novak said.

FPC lifter Jessica Roberts recovered from a car crash to break school records.

ob Marley once said, “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” Having lifted for three years — and destined to do her best her final season — FPC senior Jessica Roberts found herself in a position where uncommon strength was demanded, and she gave her all.

Roberts was T-boned in her GMC Tierra in a car crash in August last year. The crash left her two friends with minor injuries, but sent Roberts to the hospital, where she discovered she had a ruptured spleen.

She was in ICU for a week, fearing that if her bleeding didn’t stop, she would need surgery.

Because of her fitness level, Roberts was told that her body would heal itself over time. With her final weightlifting season just two months away, she began lifting little by little, although she wasn’t supposed to lift more than 10 pounds for the first three months.

“I really wasn’t supposed to be putting my body under that much pressure,” she said, “but this was my senior year, and I have worked so hard the last three years.”

Her parents were concerned about her condition: If her spleen ruptured again, Roberts could’ve seriously injured herself. She was told there may not have been enough time to undergo surgery.

So Roberts maintained a strict diet, and she trained harder than she had ever trained before.

“At first, I couldn’t grip or even open a bottle,” she said. “It was really hard to get back. There was a lot of stress, blood and tears, but I ended the season with a 250-pound total weight mark — only five pounds lighter than last season.”

Roberts broke two of her old school records in the final weightlifting meet of her high school career.

“Honestly, it sucks that everything happened like this, but I’m mentally stronger,” Roberts said. “I knew I couldn’t get back to my physical strength, so I just wanted stay positive and have fun, which is why I started lifting.

It’s my passion.”

“I didn’t get to make it to state, but I am content with my accomplishments,” Roberts added. “I had the best meet of my four years of weightlifting.”

Not a bad way to go out.

Miracle Porter

After breaking the state career goals record at 230 several weeks ago, Lady Pirate Miracle Porter has added eight more to close out her high school total at 238 goals, five goals short of taking over third place in high school girls soccer. Matanzas (13-9-1) was beaten in the district semifinal by top-seeded Pedro Menendez 5-4.

Porter ended the season with 57 goals and 41 assists, both area bests. Some of her teammates also put up big offensive numbers. Sophomore Alyssia Paiz scored 41 goals and 12 assists, and senior Leanna Ballschmeider scored 20 goals and 24 assists.

FPC wrestling takes down stateranked Clay The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs (13-0) beat No.2-ranked (1A) Clay 45-28 in a dual meet Thursday, Jan. 19, at Clay. Christian Sheppard, Steve Canidate, Eddie Bryant and Vincent Ebanks all won by pinfall. Michael DeAugustino, Avery Holder, Damion Figourea and Michael Martins also picked up wins.

Patrick White, a seventh-grader at Indian Trails Middle School, won first place for his age group in the half-marathon at Muir Woods Marathon at the end of last year in Stinson Beach, California. The course began at sea level but went up 1,300 feet and through the Muir Woods State Park. Patrick was the youngest to compete in the race.

Captured moments: FPC girls weightlifting share their biggest moments at regionals with teammates and family Flagler Palm Coast weightlifters set new school records and personal bests.

The Flagler Palm Coast weightlifting team may have placed third — just three points shy of second — out of 17 teams at its regional meet, but the lifters had several reasons to celebrate their individual performances on Thursday, Jan. 18, at FPC. While none of the Bulldogs won an individual title, 11 of their 13 lifters placed in the Top 6, and several broke school records. They will all be placed in a statewide pool for their divisions, and the Top 20 weight totals will advance to the state final meet.

Kiara Bass couldn’t wait to tell her mother, Shannon Gutierrez, that she had finally bench pressed 135 pounds, after not being able to clear 125 pounds.

(129) broke the bench record with 135 pounds, and freshman Lexi Buchanan (unlimited) broke the bench record with 180 pounds.

Most of her teammates and coach swarmed Buchanan, celebrating her feat.

“I was very surprised because I never thought that I would have been able to break a school record as a freshman,” Buchanan said.

“A lot of freshmen haven’t done that.”

Influenced by her brothers, Buchanan took up the sport in June 2016.

On witnessing several of his lifters break school records, head coach Duane Hagstrom said, “Any time your team is breaking records, you know you’re doing something right.”

VINCENT’S CLUBHOUSE Erica Cona has taken it upon herself to start programs within Flagler County for those diagnosed with autism, and their families.

rica Cona knows exactly where she was standing in the kitchen last June when she decided to create a summer camp for children with autism, a condition her 9-yearold son Vincent has.

“We were standing right there, when he said, ‘Mommy, why can’t I go to camp with my cousins?’ I didn’t have an answer for him.

How can you explain that to a child? So I lied and I said to him, ‘The camp is filled up.’ “ Not liking that she lied to her child, she began researching how to start a nonprofit that would provide a summer camp for Vincent and other children with autism.

Her board of directors includes a speech language pathologist and Timothy King, who is director of ESE services for Flagler County, and formerly an assistant principal at Rymfire Elementary.

Children with autism can have difficulty in over-stimulating situations, making having something as simple as photos with Santa unrealistic. In December, Cona rented a room at the Palm Coast Community Center and set up 20-minute blocks for each child’s visit with Santa. Thirteen families came to have photos taken.

“I charged $25, and I was hoping to break even, but that did not occur,” she said. “The photographer donated her time, but I had to get decorations, a Santa Claus, and rent the room.”

Cona wanted parents to be able to bring their children for family photos and not have to worry about the possibility of a meltdown or tantrum.

“I don’t think a picture with Santa would have been possible without it,” said one parent, Stephanie Lauber.

Lauber’s 2-year-old son, Kayne, was diagnosed last September. A common challenge is being able to get daily chores, like grocery shopping, done with Kayne. If he has a tantrum, she said fellow shoppers aren’t always understanding or compassionate.

“I get not-so-nice things said to me and dirty looks,” Lauber said.

“I try to explain, ‘I have to get my groceries, too.’ The biggest thing is to help raise awareness for autism.”

Cona’s vision for the future is to have a free-standing building, an actual “Vincent’s Clubhouse.”

The clubhouse would include a cafeteria, a sensory room and a playground. It would offer respite care, day care, summer camps, and after-school care. But that is

Coordinating with Flagler Schools, she is filling out applications in hopes of having the camp at Bunnell or Rymfire Elementary, and looking for volunteers, preferably health care professionals and teachers.

“I wanted to do 8 to 5, so parents don’t have to do anything,” she said. “Tim asked me, ‘How are we going to do that? Where are you getting the volunteers?’ He has to bring me down to reality from time to time.”

The plan is to have Vincent’s Clubhouse summer camp from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, June 5-16.

The camp mission is to be engaging, fun, safe and educational.

“This is not a day care,” Cona said. “My goal is to have a life enrichment program, socialization and some academics.”

The first year Cona said the camp be for elementary-age children, who are high functioning. The cost for the entire camp is $65. In the future, she hopes to expand the program to serve more children. All proceeds from this camp will go to the 2018 Summer Camp, to extend the times and

While Kayne Lauber is too young to participate in the camp, his mother is happy she connected with Cona on Facebook.

“This is a huge help with finding information and resources,” Lauber said. “It’s good to connect with other parents with the same issues I deal with.”

On her website, Cona said: “There’s a quote floating around the internet that reads, ‘Autism is a journey I never planned, but I sure do love my tour guide.’”

The donation was raised by the gift shop through the sale of “I Survived Hurricane Matthew 2016” T-shirts, where a portion of the sales were donated to the charity.

Problem solving team reaches out during emergency situations The Reaching for Relief Problem Solvers help families stay with their loved ones who are in ICUs. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR

Families called to the hospital, after a medical emergency affects a loved one, often find themselves without the basic necessities.

Project Reaching for Relief was created to fill this need for those families who stay overnight in the pediatric and neo-natal intensive care units at Halifax Health.

by Sierra Bice, Ethan Bellinger, Nicole Perilli, Kayla Colandrea, Rida Muneer and Mia Scarcella, for their Community Problem Solving project in Diane Tomko’s Flagler Palm Coast High School class.

The project’s mission was a personal one for Nicole.

“Years ago, I was in a car accident, and my sister had been in a coma, and my family stayed for multiple nights,” Nicole said.

“My mom was not prepared with anything, and she didn’t want to leave.”

were delivered to the hospital in November.

“Elementary students made 355 cards for the bags,” Ethan said.

Reaching for Relief is more than filling comfort bags. The team created a flier of facts for the waiting rooms that include local restaurants that deliver to the hospital, Uber and taxi services, stores and hotels that are close to the hospital.

The team has worked at getting items donated.

“We had one woman find us online, who emailed us,” Rida said.

“She travels a lot and brought us hotel soap, and shampoo.”

“I know some dentists, and have asked for tooth brushes and toothpaste,” Sierra added.

The team has also had fundraisers with Chik-fil-A and Krispy Crème doughnuts, and established a Gofundme account for additional supplies, like the canvas bags.

Along with social media, the group has been getting their message out at events like the Palm Coast Christmas parade.

“We handed out candy with our business cards attached,” Nicole said. “We’ve seen more traffic on social media since.”

As the team works toward the State Problem Solvers competition in Orlando in March, they continue to enhance their project.

“We want to get some blankets,” Sierra said. “I am reaching out to different places, including the airlines.”

One need they hope to meet came from a teacher who was a patient after a car accident. The team hopes to add phone chargers in the waiting rooms, or make them available at the nursing station.

“This is what sparked our interest in this project,” Nicole said.

“But we wanted to make it larger and have a bigger impact.”

“At the hospital they are tending to the patients, so we wanted to help the families,” Sierra said.

The group started brainstorming over the summer, so they would be ready to implement their ideas by November.

“We came up with a project and called it Reaching for Relief,” Rida said. “We contacted the director of public relations and collected data on which departments would benefit the most, and came up with the neonatal and pediatric ICUs.” The group embroidered and silk-screened canvas bags with their purple logo and filled them with the needed items. The bags will be distributed, from the nursing stations, when needed.

The bags were embroidered with the help and sewing machines of Joanne Whaley and Linda Longo.

“We left surveys with the families to see what they would want while they were there,” Ethan said.

The first 50 bags, filled with soap, shampoo, conditioner, dental needs, paper and pen, a deck of cards, and some special cards of encouragement,

New FHS grant helps pets move into rental homes with their families

The $4,500 grant was awarded from Maddie’s Fund.

The shelter’s winning proposal was to start a fund to help owners with fencing, and pet deposits for renters.

“We want to help people with fences so dogs don’t have to live on chains,” Amy Carotenuto, director of FHS said.

“Unfortunately, the reason for owners surrendering animals is either the landlord won’t allow them, or they can’t take them where they are going, or the pet deposits.”

Carotenuto is hoping the program can continue past the initial grant money. As renters

move out, the pet deposit paid by the FHS would be returned to the fund.

Finding landlords willing to rent to families with dogs and cats can be difficult, and typically those places that do are rented quickly. This is where the Richburgs’ landlord, Virtual Homes Group, comes in.

Pet deposits are typically $300 per pet, an amount that can be a financial burden for the tenants, especially those with multiple pets.

“Working with property managers like Jacquie (Iacovelli) at Virtual Homes, can help persuade property owners that allowing pets in a rental home is a good thing for them, too,” Carotenuto said. “It widens the pool of their prospective

renters.”

Stacy said she would have kept looking for a new home, because she had no intention of giving up her cats.

Carotenuto is hoping the program will snowball and more landlords will consider allowing pets.

Carotenuto said that one direction the shelter wants to go is to help property owners who don’t have a lot of restrictions on the type or size of pets.

“If someone can’t pay the pet deposit and has to get rid of a poodle, a poodle comes to the humane society and gets adopted immediately,” Carotenuto said. “When property owners don’t allow big dogs, they’re (the big dogs) are the ones that have trouble getting adopted.”

Homeowner’s insurance companies have a “12 dangerous breeds” list which also, understandably can affect a landlord’s decision.

“I grew up with a German shepherd,” Iacovelli said.

“Others see breeds like that as a threat. There are owners that will allow these dogs under the stipulation that the renters get their own renter’s insurance to cover the dogs.”

The shelter is leaving the applications up to the participating realty management companies.
