Family Life Center gets backyard makeover Leadership Flagler Class 23 gave the center a swing set and walking path. JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

Leadership Flagler Class 23 gave the Family Life Center’s domestic violence shelter an outdoor makeover March 4-7. The team resodded the yard, expanded the backyard from 45 feet by 55 feet to 80 feet by 124 feet and added a new paver and stone entry into the house, and paths for walking and biking. New landscaping, including a new butterfly garden with a bench and birdbath, was added. The class also relocated the existing play set and added a new one, and a covered picnic area. Leadership Flagler is a program of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce. Several employees and family members worked with the class to get the work done. The class raised about $9,000 in funding and material donations from businesses and individuals to pay for the makeover. “We want the Family Life Center staff and participants to know we have been honored to have been able to do this project and they will always hold a special place in our hearts,” said Cindi Lane, class member and Palm Coast city spokeswoman. “Our goal was to create a safe, peaceful and relaxing place for families to enjoy while they’re going through a difficult time in their lives, and we are excited to hear they are already using the improved backyard!”

“We’re ready to burst into tears at any moment,” said Bonnie Bumb, who was awaiting her son’s arrival after a year of deployment. “It’s been a long, long year.” Stephen’s wife, Malana, agreed. “We’ve been holding our breath for a year,” she said. Also waiting was Debbie Kruck-Forrester, who walked the Granada Bridge every morning since they left, along with mem-

On one of her last walks with Ormond Strong, she said the troops had been back at Fort Bliss in Texas for a couple of weeks, so she had been talking to her husband, Sgt. 1st Class Tim Forrester “for hours” after a year of only text messages and email. Janie Rocke welcomed her son home from his service in Iraq many years ago; but she also had a bond with these soldiers – she had written to them. “When my son was over there I wrote to him every day,” Rocke said. “Some soldiers weren’t getting mail and I was determined my son wasn’t going to be one of those.” She began making contacts online and writing to other soldiers so they would have mail, something she continues today. “When Debbie (Kruck-Forrester) started the first letter writing thing at the library, I told her, ‘you are going to find some that don’t get mail,’” Rocke said. “I still write letters every week.” The Brown family, Charlie, Sarah and their son Kipton stretched

The unit returning from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan was the National Guard Unit based out of the Flagler County Airport. Debbie Kruck-Forrester, who lives in Palm Coast and works in Ormond Beach, stayed in perpetual motion making sure everything was perfect, until her husband, Sgt. 1St Class Tim Forrester, descended the stairs of the second plane. Then she sprinted across the tarmac and into his arms in an embrace that Holly-

Bagram Airfield, also known as Bagram Air Base, is the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. It is located next to the ancient city of Bagram, 11 kilometers southeast of Charikar in the Parwan Province of Afghanistan.

They may have been strangers, but the several hundred people who gathered at the Sheltair runway at Daytona Beach International Airport on Thursday, March 10, had a lifetime bond. They all had loved ones returning from a year deployment in Afghanistan. Eyes turned toward every plane approaching and there were groans of disappointment when it wasn’t one of the planes they had come to greet. But finally the first plane appeared on the horizon and touched down, coasting through a water cannon salute provided by two fire engines. The second plane, arriving about 20 minutes later, was redirected to a runway behind the crowd and actually managed to “sneak up” on the group scanning the skies at the other end of the runway. Families had driven from throughout Florida, including Tampa, Cocoa Beach and Orlando to welcome the soldiers and take them where they really wanted to be – home. There were also some local

Malana Bumb said she had to take on an extra role — of being both mother and father to their baby — and now the family will be getting her husband back into the routine. She said they stayed strong for him, and took care of things so he wouldn’t have to worry about their baby. “I feel overwhelmed with joy,” she said. “I’ll feel whole again. You don’t feel whole until he’s back.” Andrea Henige, of Palm Coast, said she felt “lost” when her husband was away, but she knew he had to do his job. “I was in the military,” she said. “That’s how we met.” She said it was an adjustment when he left, and it will be an adjustment now that’s he’s back, because she has learned to do do things around the house that he used to take care of. “We’ll get to know each other again,” she said. “It will be total excitement to see him. I’m filled with all kinds of emotion.” Noel and Melanie Koeller, of Ormond Beach, welcomed home their son, Specialist Jake Koeller. They said Ormond Strong was the “best support group ever,” and they walked with them whenever they could. “They became a family,” Melanie Koeller said. Her son, Jake, said it was nice to have so much support. “It caught us off guard,” he said. “To see so many people show up … it was humbling.” Sgt. Forrester agreed it was humbling when the troops would watch videos of Ormond Strong walking in their honor, as well as raising public awareness, arranging letter writing campaigns and sending care packages. “I’ve got the most wonderful wife in the world,” he said. SUCCESSFUL MISSION

At the welcome home ceremony at the airport, Lt. Col. Michael Powers said the care packages and other support the troops received was outstanding. He pointed out that members of the unit who were not deployed did a great job of taking care of the home operations. In the deployment, the unit operated the Counter Rocket Artillery and Mortar Protection System. When an incoming rocket was detected on radar, they would destroy it with the system. Powers said they successfully defended against 70 attacks. “Nobody was injured or killed from these rocket attacks because of what these guys did,” Powers said.

“That’s what you sign up for when you marry a soldier.”

I am a Gold Star mom and it’s an honor for me to be out here.”

Should newspapers endorse candidates? I always enjoy the local news in the Observer, but allowing your CEO to tell us how to vote in the upcoming presidential primary is laughable, if it wasn’t so ridiculous and insulting to your readers. Apparently, Mr. Walsh has forgotten that presidential primaries include TWO parties and we even elect independent candidates occasionally ... Mr. Walsh’s “analysis” is loaded with illogical, ludicrous assumptions, conclusions, and suggestions. If “the 2016 campaign...has been truly bizarre”, as he contends, why does he spend so much time on all the presidential pretenders who have made a circus and a mockery of what used to be civilized GOP debates? And if we follow his logic, Palm Coast residents who are registered Republicans should vote for a devious, habitually truant Senator from Florida (who we don’t really want), in order to sabotage the candidacy of the “narcissistic, flip-flopping, un-presidential boor” and the megalomaniacal Texan “who is despised by the very people with whom he would have to work”. This would somehow allow the ascension of “the best choice” (Gov. Kasich), a candidate with 10% of the current votes, whom he credits “with acting most like an adult so far”. Given his ability to turn his opinions into “facts”, sling mud, and ramble incessantly without saying anything relevant, I’d say Mr. Walsh might be an ideal candidate to throw his name into the GOP fray. And if Mr. Walsh truly believes that “acting like an adult”, as

LOUSY WELCOME TO A NEW HOME 10:27 a.m. First block of Reidel Lane. Burglary: A 34-year-old woman told deputies that someone stole jewelry from her jewelry box when she moved into a new home March 8. The woman’s friends and relatives helped her move her things, including the jewelry. When she got to the new house and looked over her boxes, she saw that some boxes — which others had driven to the new house for her — were opened. She confronted the person who drove the opened boxes over, and the person said they didn’t know why the boxes were open, and that other people had also handled the boxes. The next day, the 34-yearold discovered that all of the jewelry — $1,700 worth — had been removed from her jewelry box.

BRIEFS CITY REPERTORY THEATRE PRESENTS

Bottle clubs banned

Palm Coast businessman Paul Aiello was killed the morning of March 10 when his motorcycle struck a tree near the Hammock Beach Resort. Aiello, 52 and owner of the heating and air conditioning company RHS Mechanical, was riding a 2014 Harley Davidson FLHXS west on Ocean Crest Drive at about 10:30 a.m. when the motorcycle hit road’s southern curb. The cycle then drove over the curb and hit a tree, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Three arrested in shots fired incident

From a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release: Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested three suspects March 8 after a young man said several shots were fired at him in Palm Coast. Deputies were called to the Kangaroo gas station at 1500 Palm Coast Parkway where Anthony Kraemer, 19, reported seeing a gold Mazda sedan with five occupants about to turn onto Brookside Lane. One of the people in the car shot at him five or six times, in one instance striking his rear bumper. Kraemer was not hurt. An off-duty officer spotted the Mazda and stopped it. Deputies arrested driver Jean Louis Steverson, 19, and passengers Derek Hall, 23, and Phillip Haire, 18.

The Palm Coast City Council voted unanimously at its March 15 meeting to add bottle clubs — establishments where patrons bring their own booze and have it served back to them — to a list of banned land uses. It was the city’s tenth public hearing on the clubs and the City Council’s second and final vote.

Manfre to fight fine

CITY REPERTORY THEATRE

Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre faces a $6,200 fine if the Florida Ethics Commission rules against him in an April 15 hearing. Last month, Manfre said he wouldn’t appeal a ruling against him. He’s changed his mind. “My original reaction was just to put it behind me. Politically, that would be the smarter thing to do,” Manfre said. “But on reflection and talking to my family, I’ve decided that ... I intend to appeal any decision that finds me in violation of the ethics code, or any fine.” Manfre said the fine proposed for his case was disproportionate to a $500 fine the commission ordered former Sheriff Don Fleming to pay in Fleming’s ethics case years ago. Manfre suggested political motivations may lie behind the disparity. “The commission is a Republican appointed commission; (Fleming) is a Republican. ... I’m a Democrat,” he said. “I’ve never seen a more unjust, politically motivated process.” For more on this story, view it online at palmcoastobserver.com.

State: Weeks recorded talks for ‘leverage’

The Perfect Gift

Weeks also released a recording of two county officials in order ‘to embarrass them,’ according to the State Attorney’s Office. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Former Flagler County elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks not only recorded people’s conversations without their consent, but did so in order to “have leverage” over them, and released one of those recordings “to embarrass” two local officials, according to the State Attorney’s Office. Weeks is charged with 12 felony counts of surreptitiously recording people’s conversations and distributing the recordings. The prosecution in the case filed a Feb. 10 document with the Clerk of Courts office stating that Weeks’ recording of various people, including local and state officials, follows a pattern of behavior with that common intent, and that the case against her should therefore not be split into several separate trials, as requested by Weeks’ legal team. “The State intends to prove at trial that the defendant taped and recorded different people in order to have ‘leverage’ on them to accomplish her goals,” the document states. Recording a person without their consent and disseminating that recording is generally a third-degree felony in the state of Florida, but the recording or dissemination must be intentional, not accidental. The 12 counts against Weeks consist of 10 charges that she recorded state and county officials and others without their consent, and two that she disseminated two of those recordings: a tape of a conversation between County Commissioners Charlie Ericksen

and County Attorney Al Hadeed, and a recording of a conversation between Weeks, Secretary of State Ken Detzner and other officials. Weeks had disputes with both the County Commission and Hadeed. “The release of Mr. Hadeed’s and Commissioner Ericksen’s illegally recorded statements was intended to embarrass them and give the defendant an upper hand in the disagreement,” according to the State Attorney’s Office document. Weeks sent that recording to the press and to County Commission candidate Dennis McDonald, and in an April 4 recording, made “statements that allude to the fact that she is communicating with Dennis McDonald about how things will change for the Supervisor of Elections Office should McDonald be elected to the County Commission over another sitting Commissioner,” according to the document. Weeks behaved similarly by recording Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner after she’d pressed his office to intervene in a dispute with the city of Palm Coast over polling locations, according to the document. “Weeks was upset about what was occurring in Palm Coast and she called the Secretary of State and asked for advice and demanded that he intervene to correct the perceived inequities of the defendant,” according to the document. A hearing on the motions to sever filed by Weeks’ legal team is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 24 at the Kim C. Hammond Justice Center in Bunnell.

Initial work to start on Marina Village; manatee regulation delays permits Developer Jim Cullis expects to have Army Corps of Engineers permits for the marine work this summer, after a new manatee protection plan is enacted.

Initial work will begin on the planned Lighthouse Harbor Marina Village between Colbert Lane and the Sea Ray plant, but manatee protection protocols are delaying permitting for the boat slips. The Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have suspended permits for any boat dock facilities on the Intracoastal Waterway with more than five slips until new manatee protection regulation is enacted. Grand Haven Realty President Jim Cullis, representing Lighthouse Harbor LLC, which owns the property, said he hopes to have those permits by this coming summer. “As I think everyone well knows, there’s been a number of major marine improvements in the county that have been held up because of the Army Corps of Engineers on the manatee protection plan,” Cullis said at a county Planning and Development Board

meeting March 8. “So my partners and I have really been waiting until this manatee protection plan gets worked out. ... Well that’s finally moving forward. ... And we think that sometime this summer, we’ll have the Army Corps permits.” Cullis said he’d been working on the project since 2003 or 2004. Lighthouse will begin working on its final site plan after the Army Corps gives notice that it will issue permits, Cullis said. Culls said he expects to receive that notice within the coming few weeks. The 88-acre site on the old Lehigh Cement property would include boat slips, residential units and retail and commercial space. The old smokestack would be painted to look like a lighthouse. At its meeting March 8, the Planning Board approved Cullis’ application to begin grading on 67 acres of the site. Lighthouse Harbor must start the work soon: It has to complete the first phase of construction by Dec. 16, 2017 in order to comply with its Planned Unit Development agreement. The Marina Village Planned Unit Development was adopted by ordinance on July 24, 2006. The initial phase of work doesn’t include any vertical construction, landscaping, parking work or utilities. The Planning Board approved the application unanimously.

Fixing unsafe bus stops — and unsafe behavior

E S T A T E

#1 Agent in East Central Florida

The city and School District can add signs and waiting pads at bus stops, but correcting various dangerous behaviors is tougher. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

The city of Palm Coast/Flagler School District team working to make school bus stops safer can install wait pads, stop locations and signs. But that won’t stop dangerous behavior on the part of students, parents and drivers. Wait pads will soon be installed at the school bus stops at London Drive and Lee Drive, Rolling Sands and Rolling Fern Drive, and Farnsworth Drive and Fairbanks Lane, three from a list of 18 stops that officials consider high priority. Pads cost about $1,200 each, and the city will pay for them. “We’re giving them a facility that, instead of standing on the street, you can stand off to the side of the street,” city Construction Manager Carl Cote said. The signage, Cote said, “will hopefully address that issue of parents sometimes creating chaos at some of these bus stops.” But there’s also the question of whether the new measures will be enough to correct children’s unsafe behavior. “On my street, for example, they’re all over the place,” City Councilman Bill McGuire said. “I’ve seen them laying on the street with their head on their backpack. The concept is solid,

“The more parents and grandparents we can have at these bus stops, with the kids, the better.”

but will the kids do it?” In addition to the changes, the School District is using Student Problem Solver groups to teach other kids about bus stop safety and pedestrian safety. The joint city of Palm Coast/ Flagler School District group studying bus stop safety was formed less than a week after 7-year-old Wadsworth student Kymora Christian died after a car struck her at her school bus stop Oct. 7, 2015. Kymora was crossing the street when she was struck, and the measures the city and School District are proposing now would not have helped her, Landon said. “This would not have prevented that tragedy,” Landon said. “If the pad had been there, she would have been crossing the street to get to the pad. ... This is not going to solve all of the problems.” The city and Flagler School District hope to get the pouredconcrete pads in quickly, so they can see how students and parents react to them — and whether they actually improve safety — before the end of the school year. “I think that’s the key, because how much is the government responsible for your child’s safety, and when does it start to become your responsibility as a parent?” McGuire said.

A happy exchange Irea García has fallen in love with lacrosse.

Exchange student Irea García has enjoyed her time in the U.S.A., doing those things she normally doesn’t get to do in Spain.

alking down her street in Galicia, Spain, Matanzas exchange student Irea García could easily find a worndown soccer ball in a neighbor’s yard or in a local park. But what she’d never find are lacrosse sticks and some of her new favorite American foods. “Most people that come over to do the exchange student program say the best way to make friends is to join a team,” García said. “So, I wanted to try things I wouldn’t be able to try in Spain.” After assuring her father that girls’ lacrosse was separate from the physical boys’ play he saw on a YouTube video, her family and friends encouraged her to try it, and she’s fallen in love with it. “It has worked out really well for me,” she said. “Everyone on my team has been very welcoming. I wish I could keep playing lacrosse, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible.” Lady Pirates’ team captain Bailee Hurd praised García, saying García reminded her of herself. “She is doing extremely well for her first year,” Hurd said. “She

A TASTE FOR AMERICAN CUISINE? Since living in the states, García has become a fan of steak burgers, tortilla chips and quesadillas. Her most favorite in the U.S. is Smoothie King. “We have smoothies, but I don’t know of any chain similar to them,” she said. “They have a lot of different smoothies, and they are all so good. They fill you up, and they don’t use any sugars or any other bad things.”

has great speed; I gave her my old cleats, which I think is the secret. But, having her on the team brings a lot of positive energy, and she’s always eager to learn something new.” As a defender, García rarely gets scoring opportunities, but her special moment came when she took the ball downfield and flung it right past the goal keeper. “It felt so good, and all my teammates were screaming, ‘Good job, Irea,’” she said. “I could even hear the coaches too. That really made me feel even more attached to the team.” Getting to play sports in school is unusual for García. In Spain, there are no school teams, only city league sports clubs. “There’s no school spirit in Spain,” she said. “All the activities that make people get more involved here makes school a lot more fun.” In a few more months, lacrosse will be finished, and so will Garcia’s American, or more precisely, Palm Coast experience. She will get to reunite with friends and family, and she won’t have to depend on car rides anymore. But, Garcia will leave with foreign taste buds and, most importantly, a ton of new friends and a newfound love for a game she never knew existed.

ave you ever watched a player excel in a sport because of God-given natural talent? Maybe you were said athlete? Most times height and weight make the biggest differences in youth sports, but when everyone is the same size, an athlete’s natural ability is a thing to be admired. I witnessed that in Matanzas quarterback Jaida Reddin last week. In a losing effort to Seabreeze, Reddin became the obvious go-to player, running the ball on nearly every down from the quarterback position, but she still seemed a bit difficult to stop. In the first half, she actually moved the ball the entire distance downfield and scored the Lady Pirates’ only touchdown. What’s most impressive about Reddin is that she’s a freshman who has never played football before. Opposing quarterback McKenzie Bowlus, the two-time reigning Bright House Flag Football Player of the Year, praised the young and inexperienced Reddin, saying, “For a freshman, she’s really good. If she would take her time and think before every play, she would really ball out. I would love for her to be on my team; she’s got great talent.” I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a scenario similar to this one. In my B.C. (before calories) days, many looked at me as a natural talent, but I wonder how much of a difference maker I’ would’ve made on a cricket team... Reddin’s cousin, Zhariah Haire, who also plays, encouraged her try out. I doubt either of them expected her to become the team’s best prospect going forward. Not even halfway through her first season, Reddin has grown fond of the game, and she plans to play for the rest of her high school years. Judging by the moves I’ve seen her make and Bowlus’ perspective, it’s going to be interesting to see how she develops.

Riding home from a fishing trip with his father, Frank, a few weeks ago, Ryan Dudley, a Matanzas baseball player, went into a seizure. “I kept asking him if he was OK, and he gave me the thumbs up,” Frank said. Although Ryan was able to recover from his seizure, getting to the hospital, the doctors notified his parents that he had a tumor the size of a baseball in his head. He was then transported to Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital where they performed brain surgery and removed the tumor. After seven days, Dudley was discharged a week before he was selected as one of the honorary first pitchers for the Flagler Baseball opening ceremonies. He was told that his condition had less than a 5% chance of ever coming back, but he will not be able to play any contact sports for a year, so he has to wait his junior year to play again. Throughout the journey, the Dudleys say they were supported by family, friends, the community and the medical personnel who attended to Ryan. Jeff Dawsey

After 38 years of what he calls a “never ending merry-go-round,” former White House photographer Larry Downing has retired to Ormond-by-the-Sea. Traveling the world on Air Force One, he was a witness to history. “I covered everything the presidents did,” he said. He was there for the triple-

He checked beach towns all over Florida before picking Ormondby-the-Sea as his retirement home. While he now lives in a scenic area, he won’t be seen combing the beach with a camera

‘Worth More than Gold’

The 10th-annual Mr. and Miss Matanzas was held on Thursday, March 10, at Matanzas High School.

2016 Mr. and Miss Matanzas went to Melanie DiMartino and Storm Schalit.

fter each of the student’s performances on Thursday, March 10, at the Matanzas High School’s Mr. and Miss Matanzas pageant, the crowd gained momentum; loud applauses and whistles could be heard resounding off the auditorium walls. At the last performance of the night, everyone fell silent to hear Melanie DiMartino’s mellifluous voice rise and ebb to the song “I Will Always Love You.” As her voice receded, the crowd climaxed into a boisterous standing applause. After a quick, impromptu question from the judges to each contestant, the winner of the 2016 Mr. and Miss Matanzas was announced. Melanie was rewarded for her performance with a bouquet of flowers and a queen’s crown alongside Storm Schalit who was crowned 2016 Mr. Matanzas, for his Hip-Hop dance performance. “The Mr. and Miss Matanzas pageant gives students an opportunity to perform in front of their peers, gain self-confidence and let a different side of their personality shine,” said Pageant Producer Barbara Tant. Every year the winners of the pageant serve as ambassadors for Matanzas High School by representing it at various community events. The pageant is organized by the MHS Marketing and DECA club students. “This pageant often acts as a venue for students to explore various talents that may interest them,” Tant said, “such as marketing and therefore organizing the actual event, or acting, singing and dancing as a performer.” — ANASTASIA PAGELLO

Warm weather is back — mosquitoes will be too

PETS OF TH E WEEK

Heartworm testing and preventative measures are important in Florida.

JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

As we prepared to move to Florida more than 20 years ago, I took my dog to his veterinarian in Virginia for one last checkup. The vet’s parting words have stuck with me, “You do know where they test for heartworm and give preventatives right?” Florida is definitely one state

where annual heartworm testing and preventatives is not an option, it is a necessity. Now is the time to have your pets tested and preventative medications begun. In colder regions, owners can let down their guard in the winter months. Highly unlikely you will be bitten by a mosquito in Boston in February. In Florida, the calendar doesn’t play a role in when to treat — the thermometer does — which is why most vets will recommend you keep your pets on preventative meds all year. Heartworms can be fatal to your animals. The worms live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels. Heartworms live inside the dog, mature into adults and lay eggs. The disease is different in cats. While most heartworms will not survive to adult stage in cats, even immature worms can cause damage. There is no medication to treat heartworms in cats. Prevention is essential for our felines. The treatment to get rid of heartworms in dogs is expensive and not an easy process for the dog. Please make an appointment with your vet today.

GUEST PET OF THE WEEK

Tanner is a Chihuahua who lives with Gail Berry. Tanner was only 3 pounds when he was found on the streets of Detroit. An animal rescue in Rhode Island took him in and brought him back to good health and he became a member of the Berry family. The family had just lost their beloved Teena, another Chihuahua, and had love to give. Tanner has found himself a forever home. Here is Gail’s description of Tanner’s first visit to his new home: “On his first visit to our home he walked from room to room, marked his territory (my curtains), and made himself at home on our sofa. He had no intention of leaving — that was five years ago. His job is to bark when strangers approach our home, which he does very well, and likes to spend his free time walking and sunbathing. Tanner is the most gentle and calm Chihuahua we have ever met, we have never heard him growl at anyone, but he can get impatient with overly playful dogs.”

K

ids of all ages had a unique opportunity to get up close and sit inside a Flagler County fire engine, police vehicle and a waste management truck on Friday, March 11, at Central Park in Town Center before the showing of the featured film “Max.” Children and their parents asked the city employees a million questions about the various parts and inner workings of the machinery and ogled over the height of a fully extended fire engine ladder. The event

gave the youngsters a better idea of what all of those toggles and switches are used for on a daily basis. “When I was a kid and saw a firetruck go past I would get excited,” Firefighter Paramedic Patrick Shakes said. “Seeing these trucks up close, it gives them something to aspire towards,” added Shakes as he bent down to give a little boy a plastic red helmet. “He has been looking forward to this event for a week,” said Lynnette Capriotti, the two-year-

old boy’s grandmother. “Firefighting runs in Jack’s family. On both sides he has great-grandfathers who were firefighters. He even insisted on wearing his special fire engine shirt.” — ANASTASIA PAGELLO

This corresponds to over 25% improvement in speech understanding. *“The benefits of hearing aids vary by type and degree of hearing loss, noise environment, accuracy of hearing evaluation and proper fit. Fuego Del Mar Cantina & Grill in Flagler Beach was recently purchased by new owners Paul Chestnut and Scott Fox. The restaurant has slowly been transitioning away from well-known Mexican-style entrees and plywood barstools to an all new rustic Florida restaurant. On Cinco de Mayo, an all-day send-off celebration with live entertainment will be held at Fuego’s to honor the old restaurant and welcome the new Florida- and Caribbean-themed Tortugas Floribbean Kitchen & Bar. The restaurant’s transition will feature a complete makeover, from new wicker barstools to different wall d√©cor. In the upstairs balcony, a VIP Lounge will be put in place for special events and private parties. The interior and exterior of the restaurant will receive a fresh coat of paint, while every barstool will be replaced with wicker chairs. “We want our customers to have a comfortable experience

when visiting Tortugas,” said coowner Paul Chestnut, while gesturing towards a nearby wicker armchair. “We don’t want to rush people out as these old wooden barstools used to do; the view is too nice to not fully enjoy.” A new menu featuring all fresh ingredients will take the place of the Mexican-themed dishes. Food will be made fresh every day, from scratch, with locally produced organic ingredients. The bar will feature indigenous fruit made into fresh, hand-squeezed cocktails and IPA draft beer with proceeds going to support the Flagler County Turtle Patrol. “Our goal with Tortugas Floribbean Kitchen & Bar is to bring a new culture to Flagler Beach,” Chestnut said. “The transition will put new emphasis on the outdoor porches, which is a common aspect to the Carribean culture, while eventually providing the community with live entertainment every night with fresh quality food.” Visit the restaurant’s Facebook page for updates on the Cinco de Mayo re-opening celebration.
