Cameron is home! The 11-year-old Palm Coast resident left Flagler in a medevac helicopter.

To take their minds off the death of one of the restaurant’s owners, the guys from Joe’s New York Pizza competed in the World Pizza Games. They found out Alex Stephens was pretty good. YOUR TOWN

WILL THIS ‘MONOPINE’ TOWER IMPROVE YOUR CELL RECEPTION?

Palm Coast City Council members have joked about a proposed ‘monopine’ communication tower’s appearance, but they voted unanimously April 4 to approve the 150-foot tower, which is expected to improve cell phone coverage for about two miles near Palm Coast Parkway. The tower will be built on city-owned land on Corporate Drive west of the Flagler County Library, and will be able to accommodate four cell carriers. ATT has already signed on.

Florida Hospital Flagler CEO Ken Mattison leaving for New Smyrna; new CEO will be Ronald Jimenez The following is a news release from Florida Hospital Flagler: Ken Mattison, CEO for Florida Hospital Flagler, has been appointed CEO of the 112-bed Florida Hospital New Smyrna. He will serve in a dual role until May 1, 2016, when Ronald Jimenez, MD, becomes CEO for Florida Hospital Flagler. “Adventist Health System is blessed to have servant leaders like Ken and Ron ready and poised to carry our unique mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ to these communities,” said Don Jernigan, president/CEO of Adventist Health System. Mattison has served as president/CEO of Florida Hospital Flagler since 2013. Under his leadership, the campus experienced significant growth, recently breaking ground on a $15 million construction project to add 32 beds, and announcing plans for another $4.5 million project to expand the cancer center and add a second linear accelerator for radiation oncology treatments. Dr. Jimenez currently serves as chief medical officer for Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, a role he has held since 2009. As CMO, Jimenez established a clinically integrated network, was responsible for quality and patient safety, and oversaw performance improvement, utilization review and medical staff departments.

All charges have been dropped against Shawn Robert Higgins, a 49-year-old charged in October with choking his girlfriend and with breaking her 9-monthold puppy’s leg by throwing the pup against the ground. Deputies had initially charged Higgins with animal abuse, battery by strangulation and criminal mischief in connection with the Oct. 3 incident. “There are inconsistencies in the evidence and testimony, and there’s insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” State Attorney’s Office spokesman Spencer Hathaway said.

Wilsey didn’t complain of injuries at the scene of the crash, but was still checked at the hospital because she was pregnant, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. The driver of the school bus was also not hurt. The crash happened as the bus — number 20403, also called the Elk Bus — was slow-

ing down for a stop on Pine Grove Drive at the corner of Pittman Drive at 8:22 a.m., yellow lights flashing. The impact caused the airbags to deploy on Wilsey’s KIa Optima. Paramedics checked the children. None needed to be hospitalized. They were transferred to another bus, which took them to Wadsworth Elementary School.

Welcome home FROM PAGE 1

Michael Mercado and his mother, Sharla, drove from DeLand so Michael could once again speak to those attending the Flagler County Boy Scout Golden Eagle Dinner.

he diners at The Hammock Dunes Club restaurant all had one thing in common on Wednesday, April 6 — they all found great value in the Boy Scouts program. This year’s Flagler County 2016 Boy Scout Golden Eagle Dinner honoree was Mike Chiumento, a local attorney and an active member of many Flagler and Volusia organizations. His son, Michael Chiumento III, was the dinner chairman. When the evening was over, $26,263 had been raised. For Bob Cuff, another local attorney, the Flagler County Golden Eagle dinner is an annual tradition, even though he was never a Boy Scout. “I grew up in a small town in southwestern Massachusetts, and there wasn’t a Boy Scout troop,” he said. “For some reason, the Girl Scouts ruled the place; it must have been the cookies.” He was impressed with the scout who gave the presentation at the dinner. “When this kid grows up,” Cuff said, “he’s going to be the president of the United States. He sounds like he’s the CEO of a large corporation when he starts talking about all of the activities.” Cuff was describing Michael Mercado. Mercado spoke at last year’s dinner as well and was introduced this year again as a Cub Scout, although he was now wearing a Boy Scouts uniform. When Michael was asked afterward what level of scout he was, his eyes turned to his mother, Sharla, who reminded him that “trustworthy” was part of the Boy Scout law. “I’m undercover as a Cub Scout,” Michael admitted, adding that he advanced to Boy Scouts in February. One of Michael’s favorite things about scouting is camping at

The camp was also School Board member Trevor Tucker’s favorite part of being a Scout. “It’s great to introduce the children to new and exciting things. Most kids don’t get to go out camping,” Tucker said. “I think it gives a good moral base to the kids.” Chiumento III listed some famous individuals who were scouts, including Neil Armstrong and Steven Spielberg. “The scouts make leaders. They are responsible for shaping our communities and developing our leaders for the future,” Chiumento III, said.

April Fool, he’s not going home, but I think they knew better than that,” said Ashley Higgins, Cameron’s mom. Higgins found her 11-year-old son on the kitchen floor on the evening of Feb. 3. He was suffering from AVM, an ailment she knew nothing about. That has changed — through research, and after sitting by Cameron’s bedside at Jacksonville’s Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Brook Rehabilitation Center. Higgins is now well-versed on the cause and treatments for the malformation that changed their lives. As they headed toward home on April 1, she asked Cameron if he knew where they were — but he didn’t — not until they turned onto their street in Palm Coast. “When we turned onto our street his eyes got big,” Higgins said. “Everyone came pouring out of the house to greet him.” Cameron was particularly happy to be reunited with his pets: Lulu, the dog; and Gracie and Cooper, the cats. Since he’s been home, his routine has been filled with therapy and outings to favorite places like Waterfront Park. The family awaits the arrival of a gait trainer, a walker designed to help Cameron practice walking. “The question ‘will he be able to walk?’ wasn’t answered until he started moving his right leg two weeks ago,” Higgins said. “Now that he is moving his right arm and leg, it is believed that he has an excellent chance of walking again. The six-month mark is going to tell us what he is going to get back, and what is gone.” His recovery is more than physical. Higgins knows the mental recovery will take years. “The AVM was on the left side of the brain, the side that controls language,” she said. “I have Cameron with me, but the Cameron I know is still slowly coming back.” On Monday, April 18, he will return to Wolfson Children’s Hospital for an angiogram. The doctors will feed a tube from his groin to his brain, and insert dye to see how big the AVM is and to make sure there aren’t other aneurysms present. The day will also include an MRI, which will allow the doctors to determine if surgery or radiation is the best course of treatment for Cameron. Higgins is hoping the procedures can be done on an out-patient basis, but with the anesthesia, she knows there is a possibility that he will stay the night. The generosity of those who have heard of Cameron’s story has overwhelmed Higgins. On Wednesday, April 11, the Grand Haven Golf Club — she works for the Community Development District there — held a golf tournament to benefit Cameron. She found it difficult to be “silent” during the silent auction. “I was bawling 10 minutes into it,” she said. “There were these people bidding $100, $200, and more. I looked at these people, and some I knew, but most I didn’t know, and they didn’t know who I am. The fact that they are willing to support someone they don’t know – so much generosity.” Cameron was able to attend the event, and even drew some winning drawing tickets. “I’ll never be able to repay these people,” Higgins said. “I’m not just talking about the money, but what they have given me in support and love.”

In a spontaneous decision to fly out to Vegas to ease their minds from some of the recent tragedy they’ve endured, Joe’s New York Pizza & Pasta cook Alex Stephens discovered that he was one of the Top 3 fastest pizza box folders in the world. Owner Mike Bennici and Stephens attended the World Pizza Games, where Stephens competed in the Fastest Pizza Stretch and Fastest Box Folding competitions against other contestants throughout the country and from around the world. While he didn’t do so well in the stretch battle, Stephens took third in the folding race, folding five boxes in 20.9 seconds, just .7 seconds behind the winner. “Surprisingly, I entered the fastest pizza stretch, thinking I would do better,” Stephens said. “I didn’t expect to do so good in the boxes. I haven’t touched a pizza box in six years. I don’t make boxes anymore; I make pizza.” The end, on Stephens’ last box ,got caught on a corner, which added an extra second, so he could’ve won the competition. Bennici has already vowed to return every year with Stephens, and his chef, for the gold medal and other competition wins. Stephens has been working for Joe’s for 12 years, and Bennici says

The soon-to-be-forgotten 1-year-old Small moments, but hopefully big memories.

BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

It was early in the morning, and the front door to the house was wide open. In the doorjamb, wearing her purple pajamas, standing only as tall as her mother’s kneecap, 1-year-old Kennedy beamed her big smile and waved goodbye to me and to her three older siblings who were in the backseat of my car. It struck me, as I pulled out of the driveway for our daily trip to school, that this child — at least in her current state — soon would be forgotten. Soon, she will learn to talk and read and write, and the 1-year-old will become ancient history. And I felt that melancholy

that comes to me every so often as a father, when I look at 6-year-old Ellie, 9-year-old Grant and 12-year-old Jackson, as well, and I know with a surety that each of them will also be forgotten and replaced with older versions of themselves: 7-year-old Ellie, 10-year-old Grant and 13-year-old Jackson. While some days parenthood is thrillingly new, other days it is characterized by an emotion curiously like grief: mourning over the younger children. So, in the middle of the road in front of our house, I made sure the three kids in the back seat all paused to wave back at Kennedy. On our drive, we looked into the future, with the baby as our reference point. In 2022 Kennedy’s oldest brother, Jackson, will graduate from high school, just a few months before she turns 8. In 2024, Grant will graduate from high school, when Kennedy is in fourth grade — the same grade Grant is in now.

A far-off look spread across Grant’s face in the rearview mirror. “I can’t imagine her in fourth grade,” he said with a smile. “I can only picture a fourth-grader’s body with Kennedy’s tiny head.” “When she’s older, she won’t be cute anymore,” said my 6-year-old, Ellie, a worried expression on her face. “Sure she will,” I said. “She’ll just look different. Just like you look different now.” I tried to impress upon them the emotion that I was feeling: that the time we have with each other isn’t very long. Soon, everyone is off to college and having their own families. That knowledge should motivate us always to treat each other with kindness, so that we have good memories to keep with us all those years in the future. Once the kids sensed that the lecture was over, of course, the fighting resumed in the back seat. But am I similarly forgetful? When I get home from work each day, do I sit on the couch

and busy myself with my phone or other nonessential pursuits? Of late, I’ve been motivated to spend hours splicing together what to anyone else would be extremely boring home videos that, someday, when I’m old and gray, I will watch with my wife in our empty house as we count down the days until our next trip to see our grandchildren, should we be fortunate enough to have any. What was going on in Kennedy’s head as she waved goodbye to her father and siblings that morning? She has no concept of time, no reason to think that life will ever change, that her days in that doorjamb are numbered. Most children lack any awareness of how temporary their situation is, how fleeting their crises. As we get older, the weight of time can be crushing, unless we become as little children again and live fully in each small moment as it comes: the passing of the ketchup, the basketball in the air on its way to the hoop in the driveway, the rich silence after family prayer.

In 1982, Congress created the Congressional Art Competition to give high school students from each district a way to showcase their artwork. This year, the Congressional Art Competition winner from Florida 6th Congressional District was announced April 10, at the Ocean Art Gallery in Flagler Beach. This year’s contest started with about 60 submitted pieces from the district, which encompasses half of Volusia County and all of St. Johns and Flagler counties. The entries were narrowed down to 10 through voting on the Facebook page of U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, FL-6. DeSantis attended the event in order to present the certificates and name the winner. The focal point of the gallery featured the 10 final pieces, displayed on easels in a large circle in the center of the main room. Gallery owner Frank Gromling selected three local judges to choose a finalist. The judges were Art LaMay, a gallery owner; Kim Carney, Flagler Beach commissioner; and Charles Shaefer, an artist within the gallery and the director of Art of the Gardens at Epcot. This was the gallery’s second year hosting the finalists. This year’s winner was Daria Hughes, a sophomore from Seabreeze High School. “It feels

incredible and surreal,” she said, knowing her artwork will be on display in D.C. Hughes used watercolor paint to create her piece, “Medley.” Her winning piece, a still life of flowers, is much different from what she refers to as her “go-to” paintings of characters. Hughes’ painting will be one of 434 student pieces that will be hung in the tunnel that connects the Capitol Building to the Office Building. DeSantis urged students to continue creating and to pursue their artistic talent as far as it will take them.

NOT A SMASHING GOOD TIME 9:17 a.m. First block of Filbert Lane. Property damage: An 18-year-old Palm Coast woman parked her car in the swale at about 9:30 p.m. April 5, and then went out at about 5:30 a.m. the next morning to find the front windshield and a rear window smashed. There was a rock inside the car, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The damage to the car, a silver 2003 Mazda 6, was estimated at about $600.

NO GAME: THIEF STEALS XBOXES AND TV 9:18 p.m. 100 block of Fenimore Lane. Residential burglary: A 29-year-old woman came home from work and spent some time in her house, then went into the bedroom to get ready for bed and realized the bedroom TV was gone. The TV, a 32-inch Sanyo, was worth about $500, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The thief also stole other items: a Microsoft Xbox 360 and a Microsoft Xbox Kinect, together worth about $300; and an 18-volt Ryobi cordless drill, worth $99, along with its battery. A deputy who checked the house found pry marks on the outside of a rear bedroom door, and wrote in a report that the marks looked like they’d been made by a flathead screwdriver or something similar.

The next morning, the cell phone and wallet were gone. WOMAN RETURNS FROM HOSPITAL, DISCOVERS JEWELRY MISSING 12:58 p.m. 100 block of Cemetery Road. Residential burglary: A 51-year-old woman got out of the hospital, where she’d been with her boyfriend, and discovered that someone had stolen her $1,763 14-carat gold bracelet from her purse while she was gone, she told a deputy. The bracelet had a broken clasp, and she’d left it, along with its warranty papers, in a black velvet box in her purse at home. The home’s doors had probably been unlocked because there were multiple children in the home, she told a deputy. A deputy took a report and noted that there were no signs of forced entry on the home.

FPC students explore career possibilities close to home Students were prepared for the annual Flagler Palm Coast High School Career Fair. JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

Meghan Wine and Rob Maxwell, of Keiser College, were impressed with the FPC students they met at the annual Career Day on Thursday, April 7. “Everyone has been so polite,” said Wine, the college’s admissions director. “They have asked me amazing questions.” Maxwell, the director of sports medicine, added that the FPC students seemed more prepared for the career fair than students at other school fairs they had attended. FPC students Jade LouisJeune, Malia Dalzell and David McErlane were checking out all of the booths, even those that were not in their projected career fields, and asking questions. Andrew Crawford and Anthony Candva were asked whether they would like to work for a company or for themselves. Anthony said he would prefer to work for himself, so he could choose his own hours. Andrew said it would depend on what company was offering the job. The majority of students who were asked expressed an interest in self-employment. During the lunch break, attendees climbed the stairs to the second level of the gym for the annual Flagship Symposium, a luncheon opportunity for flag-

ship program partners to get an update on what’s happening in the schools. FPC culinary students served lunch provided by Olive Garden, while school district Superintendent Jacob Oliva, Chamber of Commerce President Rebecca DeLorenzo and others gave presentations. At least one student from each school flagship program was stationed at each table. Nicholas Blumengarten, a student at Rymfire Elementary, sat next to his principal, Barbara Sauvelpahkick. Nicholas answered questions about the program in his school — Medical Sciences, Health and Fitness. When one guest commented on Nicholas’ communication skills, Sauvelpahkick simply said, “That’s all him. This is Nick.” Nicholas’ career ambitions were first to play football in the NFL (Washington Redskins), and secondly, to be a cardiologist. “Both of my grandfathers have heart problems,” Nicholas said. “I would like to be a cardiologist to help older people, like my grandfathers.” Oliva presented a slide show that illustrated what the school district is trying to prepare the students for when they graduate. It’s not an easy task, as the workforce continues to change. “What we are seeing are the top jobs of this generation didn’t exist 10 years ago,” Oliva said. “A lot of the jobs we are preparing them for may not have been invented yet.”

Holland Park renovation crawls ahead Also: Dozens showed up at the April 12 City Council workshop, asking to create a senior center. JONATHAN SIMMONS

HOLLAND PARK TO HELP HOST BASEBALL TOURNEY

NEWS EDITOR

Triple Crown Sports, a national company that puts on youth sports tournaments designed to combine with family vacations, is launching two youth baseball tournaments in Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches this spring – with hopes of establishing annual baseball championship tournaments here. Among the venues will be the fields at Holland Park, which city staff says will be ready in time for the April 23 and 24 games. Other venues are Indian Trails Sports Complex, the Flagler County Recreational Area and possibly Flagler Palm Coast High School (depending on the number of teams that participate).

Work on Holland Park is costing more and taking longer than expected, with the city asking for an additional $50,000 for the project. That’s in addition to $100,000 of unexpected expenses the city already paid for the project, which was supposed to end in March. “I think you all are aware that we’ve had some troubles,” City Manager Jim Landon told the council at an April 12 workshop. “This project was started before I came here, so about 10 years ago. ... We obviously have put more hours into it than anticipated.” City Council has already approved an extension of design contracts with Arcadis U.S. and Littlejohn Engineering Associates for an amount not to exceed $100,000. But that money has been used, and the project needs another $50,000, Palm Coast Construction Manager Carl Cote said. The city might be able to recoup some of that money, Landon said, through a contract provision that lets the city collect damages if contractor delays cause the project to run overtime. A master plan for the renovations was completed in 2007 and updated in 2009 and 2011, then construction started Feb. 2, 2014.

Double the district titles Matanzas lacrosse makes history by winning both the girls’ and boys’ district titles.

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR Jazzmyn Falloon

First-year head coach LeAnn Johnston hoists the girls’ district title.

The Pirates have scored 45 goals in their last two games.

Jeff Goren gets to meet his alma mater in postseason play.

A FAMILIAR FOE

Matanzas will play Lake Brantley Friday, April 15, at Matanzas. Pirates’ coach Jeff Goren is a Lake Brantley alum from the Class of 2002. “I’m really looking forward to playing Lake Brantley. For the past two years, I’ve been trying to schedule a game with them, but we haven’t been able to make it happen. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m glad we get to play my alma mater with the season on the line. Brantley has a long standing tradition of excellence in their lacrosse program.

fter a two-year hiatus, in which St. Augustine won both championships, the Matanzas Lady Pirates are back atop the district mountain, while the boys proved that last year’s district championship was no fluke. Both lacrosse programs downed both St. Augustine’s teams to celebrate district titles on the same night, the girls winning 9-4 while the boys won 23-7, their second straight over the Yellow Jackets. Heading into the postseason, both teams seem to have waited to unleash their best play for this moment: The boys have won their last two games by a combined score of 45-10, and the girls have pulled off 12 straight wins, after starting the season 1-3. “We’ve been waiting all season to get this going, and I really think it has to do with our preparation,” said Jeff Goren, the boys’ head coach. “We kept that burn in our belly, and, when it became game time, we were ready to go.”

CHAMPIONSHIP SCORERS

For the Lady Pirates, Cadaen Wilde scored three goals; Erica Payavis and Annie Doughtery scored two apiece; Jill Bontempo and Bailee Hurd each scored a goal. For the boys, Andrew McIntyre scored five goals; Storm Schalit and James Mayer had four goals each; Jonah Robertson and Paul Pechman each had three goals; Gunner Parson had two goals, and Colten Buxman and Jericho Pedron scored a goal each.

s impressive as it may be to throw three touchdowns, win a basketball district championship or bowl a 300, the classroom “stats” some studentathletes are earning will also cause heads to turn. One of my favorite quotes comes from Palm Coast resident Ike Harris, a former NFL player and good friend, who said about education, “I can blow out a knee and an ankle, but more times than not, if God allows me to breathe, I will always be able to think.” While I understand that, in the sports world, game stats matter the most, I want to highlight a few student-athletes who not only have succeeded in their respective playing fields, but have also excelled where it matters most — in the classroom. Bailey Gillespy, of Father Lopez, has earned multiple sports awards and honors in volleyball and track, including a school record for reaching the state finals in track for four events, as a sophomore. But, what’s even better is that Gillespy will graduate at the top of her class as the valedictorian. Nick Kubiet played an essential part on Matanzas’ historic football team this past season, totaling 76 tackles, 29 for loss, and 9.5 sacks, earning a First-Team All-Area selection as a junior. In the classroom, Kubiet has posted a perfect GPA. Last year, senior tennis player Noah Thompson reached the state finals tournament for Seabreeze, and he’s gone back as a regional champion. Thompson’s academic achievements, however, are too many to name. He’s ranked fourth in his class with a perfect GPA , and he’s won the AP Scholar Award. On the baseball field, Flagler Palm Coast’s Austin Massebeau received All-Area Honorable Mention honors last year. When he’s not playing, Massebeau fulfills his roles in other clubs, such as president of the Student Athletic Advisory Council. Kate Litke now owns Mainland’s volleyball career school record for digs, and last season, she led all softball players with an astounding .659 batting average. Even more astounding, Litke got accepted into the University of Florida’s Pre-Med school, where she hopes to become a doctor. When asked why education was so important to them, they all responded with this similar response: “An education is going to allow me to succeed in life.” They, who represent many others, are not just athletes; they’re student-athletes, who understand why student comes first.

Tiana Hernandez: a walking miracle LADY DAWGS SET FOR TITLE GAME

The FPC freshman once suffered from AVM, but you would never know, based on her career. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

Leading the Lady Bulldogs in RBIs, home runs, doubles and hits, as a freshman, you would never know Tiana Hernandez once suffered from an inoperable, undetected AVM in her brain. At 8 years old, just a few months after she fell in love with softball in 2009, Hernandez collapsed and nearly died. It was discovered that she had an arteriovenous malformation, causing her to experience complications similar to a stroke victim, suffering vision loss, partial paralysis, losing her memory and some of her motor skills. During this period, Hernandez had regressed mentally to a 6-year-old. “She woke up different kid, and our world was shaken,” said Rena Hernandez, her mom. “All of a sudden, she was asking for ‘Chocky-milk’ like a baby. She wanted to watch the ‘Mickey Mouse Club,’ and I was thinking, ‘She normally watches Selena Gomez. Like, what’s going on?’” “I didn’t understand it,” Tiana Hernandez added. “I would just wake up and fall right back asleep; I couldn’t do anything. It was stressful and aggravating.” After she regained enough strength to receive the type of surgery necessary for her condition, which had only been performed three other times on patients a lot older than she, the Hernandez

family had to wait two years to see if the surgery would be effective. After two years had gone by, the doctors cleared her, declaring her a “miracle kid,” and they assured the family that Hernandez’s condition would never return. “The first reaction I can remember was Tiana saying, ‘I want to be a pitcher — the best pitcher,” Rena Hernandez said. She made a full recovery and returned to softball, and she’s been an unstoppable force at her pursuit to be the best. In 2010, she started playing competitive travel softball across the state and pitching in age groups above her years. This past year alone, she has played in multiple ASA 18U Gold tournaments and showcase events. Last summer, she played in Puerto Rico, Georgia, Colorado and California and in the Under Armour game, where she was selected to the All American team. In June, Hernandez tried out as the youngest player and made the Puerto Rican Junior Women’s Olympic National Team, which includes Division I players from University of Florida, Florida State, LSU and Marshall. “You just learn not to take things for granted and to be thankful,” Hernandez said. “And, it makes you want to go all out.” That’s exactly what her parents have seen from her. “There would be days where it’s just pouring rain, and I would get

386-569-5880

home and expect my kids to be on the couch watching TV,” Rena Hernandez said, “and I would look out the window and see Tiana pitching into a net, all by herself. There was never an excuse. If it wasn’t thundering and lightning, she was working.” “At times when I think she’s inside the house and I hear something, I’d go in the back yard and see her hitting off the tee into the net, and it would be pitch black,”

her father, Felix added. “I’ll be like, ‘Girl, get inside!’ Mosquitos would be all over her head, and she would still be out there.” On her first plate appearance with Flagler Palm Coast, Hernandez politely introduced herself to high school softball with an overthe-fence home run. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is great; this is going to be a good season,’” she said. And indeed, it has been.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Sandalwood 3-1 Tuesday, April 12, to move on to the district championship, where they will play Mandarin at 6 p.m. Thursday at FPC. Jessica Hayes went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI, and Destinee Heard went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Ellie Hansen went 3-for-4 with runs scored.

S

urvivors and purple shirts filled Town Center’s Central Park April 8 for Relay for Life, an event that celebrates the lives of those lost to cancer, and encourages those who are fighting it. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. The relay is an overnight event, starting at 5 p.m. and ending at 7 a.m. the next morning. This year’s relay drew in more than 250 survivors, four of whom were children. Before the start of the survivor lap, the K-Kids Club sponsored by Kiwanis handed out medallions to survivors, and sashes to care givers. After the survivors finished the first lap, the K-Kids handed out stuffed animals. The survivor lap this year was led by the four children who are battling cancer. The oldest was Ryan Dudley, 15. Two months ago, he went to the hospital and within 24 hours of arriving was diagnosed with a 7-centimeter brain tumor. For 6-year-old Brayden NortonHenry, April 21 will be the oneyear anniversary of his leukemia diagnosis. Essie Bass-Gonzalez, 11, was diagnosed with leukemia on Feb. 28. The fourth leader, and this year’s survivor speaker, was Cameron Fulling. Cameron’s father Dan Fulling did the speaking for him. Fulling was diagnosed at just 2 years old, and has been battling cancer for six years. In that time, he’s had to deal with nine tumor resections out of the back of his head. He goes to St. Jude every four months for testing. Fighting back tears, Fulling’s father said, “In our family, he is our true hero.” Relay for Life has been organizing events since 1985.

Essie Bass- Gonzalez, Connie Canfield, Brayden Norton-Henry, Deb Stolley, Ryan Dudley and Cameron Fulling lead the survivor lap at Relay for Life.

Dinner time for felines JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

There are many reasons a cat may not want to eat. It might not be hungry.

A

common concern I hear from cat owners concerns their cat’s diet. My daughter, Kelley, adopted Robby, an older male cat. Robby was overweight when she first adopted him, so the vet recommended some lower calorie food for the inside feline. Now he seems to be losing too much weight, despite the fact that he is always hungry. During his last visit (yes, this vet makes house calls), the vet took blood for testing. Sure enough, Robby has high thyroid levels. There are a lot of reasons your cat may turn his or her nose up at their food. Maybe there isn’t enough variety, or perhaps you’ve had a change in routine, or they may be experiencing fear. Many animals don’t eat as well during during times of stress, including

thunder storms and fireworks. Cats like order and routine. If you change when you feed them or where you feed them, or if they are a new member in your household, their feeding behavior may also change. This is seen most frequently with indoor cats — and, in my opinion, they should all be indoor cats. Our cat Samantha isn’t finicky. She eats twice a day, and gets a forkful of gravy-style canned food. Not a lot, just a taste. Samantha’s quirk is she licks the gravy off the meat first. Sometimes she eats the meat, sometimes she just licks the gravy. I also leave a bowl of dry food out, just a half a cup, which I refill at her dinner feeding. Wet food is only for breakfast. With the dry food out, she has a chance to nibble throughout the day. Some days the bowl will be nearly empty by dinner; other times it is not. Her appetite varies, but then so does mine. There are different opinions about dry versus canned cat food. I like the combination. I think the dry is better for her teeth and breath. What you feed your cat should depend on two things: what the cat likes and what your veterinarian recommends. Cats have different dietary needs. One thing my daughter has

Tuna, onions, garlic, chives, milk, dairy, alcohol, grapes, raisins, chocolate (and candy of any kind), fat trimmings, bones, and raw eggs or meat (including fish). There are many more items, but the best rule of thumb is to feed them high quality food designed for cats.

done is add a mirror on the wall next to Robby’s bowl: a sense of a dining companion, I guess. All I know is it works! If your cat starts losing hair or weight, please make an appointment with your

MUTT STRUTT ON THE BEACH The Halifax Humane Society had its annual 5K run/walk on Daytona Beach on Saturday, April 2. Walkers included those with leashed pets, including a pig, who enjoyed having the opportunity to bring their pet to the beach. Volusia County does not allow pets on the majority of the beaches. More than $30,000 was raised for the animals at HHS.

Tea at Tiffany’s: A fundraiser for Arts in Education The Flagler Auditorium Governing Board and volunteers hosted the event. LISA WOLFE STAFF WRITER

The Flagler Auditorium Governing Board and volunteers hosted a “Tea at Tiffany’s” event April 6, raising money for Flagler County Arts in Education. The money gives students grants, scholarships, and the opportunity to attend band and choir camps. Last year, the foundation was able to help 50 students. “It’s a fun time for us to get together,” said board member Kim Carney. The main event takes place on stage, to give guests the vantage point of performers. An array of unique hats and head pieces filled the stage, and paper chandeliers hung above the tables set with their tea cups. At stage right, glitz and glam covered the pearl pick and raffle table, where ladies who donated

Makayla Coelho loves how the culinary students help everyone out. It’s like a big family, she said.

$20 were able to pick a pearl necklace from the table. In addition, each necklace had a number on the back which gave them a piece of jewelry to take home. The raffles were sponsored by Anything Wellness; Up, Up and Away; White Orchid; Salon Lalique; and Chez Jacqueline. Once the ladies had their seats, Lori Savoca, culinary arts teacher, led the way for her students

as they were welcomed with applause. On the menu was tea — of course — along with scones, cucumber-cream-cheese sandwiches, and egg- and chickensalad sandwiches, all made by the five culinary classes Savoca teaches. As the ladies sampled the food, they were entertained by FPC’s Formality Singers.

They speak softly, but they know what they want — successful careers in a science or math field. And they’re only in seventh grade. Jayla Alton and Ashley Andrews were nominated by their agricultural science teacher, Paul D’Agostino, and have been selected to attend the weeklong University Women Tech Trek STEM Camp at Palm Beach State College in Boca Raton. This year, there were five applicants from Indian Trails Middle School and a total of 180 applicants statewide for 60 spots. The cost is $1,000 per girl, of which the AAUW pays $950. The camp is from June 12 to 18. The girls will live in dorms on campus, attend core classes, participate in hands-on workshops, take field trips and attend a professional women’s night. “I feel it’s going to be a good experience, and fun to go and see the successful women,” Ashley said. “And get the feel of a dorm and a college.” Jayla hopes to be a surgeon, while Ashley hasn’t decided. Ashley has lived in Flagler most of her life, while Jayla has lived throughout the United States. This is her first year in Palm Coast.

PAUL BALIKER CREATES NEW JEWELRY LINE Designer: ‘Not everyone can take home a 20-foot sculpture,’ but with the jewelry line, anyone can go home with a necklace. LISA WOLFE STAFF WRITER

Paul Baliker’s first job involved baling hay for his grandfather as a kid. It may have been the last time he called someone his boss, he says. “I couldn’t work for anybody,” Baliker explains. It’s how he came to be a sculptor. “I just needed a job, and that’s the honest to God truth.” Encouraged by Kristen Gregory, a local designer, Bailker has now introduced a jewelry line. The unique effort started as a result of Gregory’s persistence. While Gregory was having Baliker design sculpted pieces for her clients’ homes, she insisted she needed a necklace and Baliker was the one to create it. Once she started wearing her new creation, people started to ask about it and interest grew. Gregory persuaded Baliker to create more pieces, launching an effort that is now known as Baliker Jewelry. “Not everyone can take home a 20-foot sculpture,” said Gregory. But with the jewelry line, anyone can go home with a necklace. When deciding where to have the jewelry produced, Baliker and Gregory decided they wanted to keep the jewelry made within the United States. They settled on Charlotte, North Carolina, for production. The carving process started with Baliker carving a large pendant out of wood. Then the original wood pieces were sent to Charlotte. Baliker and the

jewelers developed the casts and moldings based on the original work. Once cast, each piece can take anywhere from two to seven hours to make. Three-D printing streamlined the process where three sizes could be made from one original. Paul Baliker’s jewelry collection was launched at the Baliker Gallery on March 31. A portion of the sales from the collection will support television star Ty Pennington’s involvement with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. Going forward with an environmental focus, Baliker and Gregory are working with local developers for a portion of proceeds to go to a local environmental charity. Visit balikerjewelry.com.

NO Pills or Pain Management NO Physical Therapy or Surgery Just RELIEF!

What DOCTORS say about Neurogenx “Finally, a non-pharmacological protocol with dramatic results for chronic nerve syndromes.” - Dr. Seth Steber, DPM Carlisle, Pensylvania “Extremely effective . . . markedly improves pain and quality of life without the side effects of drugs.” - Dr. Richard Jacoby, DPM Scottsdale, Arizona

“It’s giving many of our patients a great amount of relief from their neuropathy symptoms, including numbness and pain.” - Dr. Darren Silvester, DPM Pleasanton, Texas “It has an 87% success rate, and you don’t get those kinds of results from other treatments.” - Dr. M. Butler-Murphy, DPM Manhassett, New York

What PATIENTS say about Neurogenx “I have been whee chairbound since 2006. Within 1 week of treatment I could get out of my wheelchair to my walker by myself, something I haven’t been able to do for years. I am also sleeping like there is no tomorrow. I can’t wait to see what the future treatments bring.” -Richard K. “I had been unable to get a full night’s rest in over a year, and lost most of the feeling in my feet due to diabetes. After just a few Neurogenx treatments, I am getting feeling back in my feet, and happy to say that I am sleeping through the night.” - Jerry M.

“Diabetic neuropathy had made my toes feel like the skin was sanded off. But during my third treatment, the miracle happened! The muscles in my legs started tensing, flexing and moving - they came back to life. When I walked across the rug I could actually feel the fibers for the first time in years. The Lyrica I had been taking only masked the problem and had some pretty nasty side effects. I’m now Lyrica-free and saving almost $300/month in drug costs. There is hope! Miracles do happen.” - Todd W.

Flagler Palm Coast High School grad keeps the Navy’s most advanced helicopters flying

YOUR TOWN

PalmCoastObserver.com

THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2016

Information from a news release provided by U.S. Navy Community Outreach: A 2001 graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School is serving with a U.S. Navy helicopter squadron that flies the Navy’s newest and most technologically-advanced helicopter. Petty Officer 1st Class Lloyd Goodison is a Naval air crewman with the “Air Wolves” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 40, a Mayport squadron that operates the Navy’s next generation submarine hunter and anti-surface warfare helicopter, the MH-60R Seahawk.

As a Naval air crewman, Goodison is responsible for monitoring and using strategic defense systems aboard the MH-60R helicopter. “Being able to go out and fly as a part of my job is awesome,” Goodison said. “Getting to go out and see everything from a bird’s-eye view is pretty cool.” He added: “The thing I love about serving at this command is I get the opportunity to train the guys first hand who are replacing me,” Goodison said. “I like to see the excitement in their eyes when they learn something they didn’t know before.” Serving in the Navy, Goodison is learning about being a more respectable leader, sailor and person through handling numerous responsibilities.

Painting fire hydrants is for the dogs News release provided by Flagler County: A group of sixth-graders from Bunnell Elementary School spent Tuesday morning, March 26, volunteering at the Wadsworth Dog Park, spreading mulch and painting fire hydrants. The students are part of Jennifer Colindres’ Community Problem Solvers gifted class. They created the name Animal Assisters, with an E, for their yearlong efforts to aide Flagler County’s animal population and their owners. “We find a problem or a dilemma, and then we spend the year trying to improve it,” student William Vierengel said. Their project at Wadsworth Park is the fourth of the year, following a resource drive for Flagler Humane Society, a drawing contest to create a dream dog park and a PowerPoint presentation to the Flagler County Parks and Recreation Department that led to Tuesday’s project. “I was very impressed by the whole presentation,” said Frank Barbuti, parks manager. “This is a very professional group of kids, and I really admire their desire to help others.” The Animal Assisters‚ Kenny Logan, Paul Grau, William Vierengel, Dylan Long, William St. Peter, Margaret D’Elia and Gabriel Dabboussi‚ are all pet owners and animal lovers. “We are trying to increase the opportunities for pet owners in Flagler County,” Kenny said.

Gabriel Dabboussi and Margaret D’Elia paint a fire hydrant at Wadsworth Dog Park. “There are only two dog parks, and one of them is closed right now. That’s why we wanted to do something here.” Paul said the group debated long and hard about whether to spell assisters with an E or with an O. Both spellings are correct. “We want people to know that we chose to do that,” he said. The Animal Assisters will spend Wednesday in Orlando in statewide problem solvers competition. “They have created a business report and will have to explain everything they have done,” Colindres said. “They have done a lot of research and planning. This is a self-motivated group. They have learned to work together, to delegate all while making a difference in the community.”

Who will be the next Ms. or Mrs. Florida or Georgia? The next Ms. & Mrs. Florida and Georgia U.S. Pageant will be presented at the Flagler Auditorium at 2:30 p.m. May 1. The pageant is seeking women from Flagler, Volusia and St. Johns counties to represent the East Coast during pageant weekend in Flagler County. Contestants will compete in four areas: Panel interview, on-stage question and answer segment, swimsuit, and evening gown. Private interviews will be conducted on April 30. Tickets to the pageant are available by calling the Flagler Auditorium, 437-7547 or 866-352-4537, and at the door the day of the event. Discounts are available for former title holders, youth, military personnel and seniors 60 and older.
