‘Palm Coast’ is trending on Facebook? They wanted another “shot” at history. So, these four U.S. Marines chose Cinnamon Beach, in The Hammock, to recreate a photo they had taken on a beach in San Diego in 1966. A central location was key in getting the four Vietnam vets back together for the photo around a surf board. Bob Falk, 71, in the blue stripe shirt, now lives north of St. Petersburg, Florida; Dennis Puleo, 69, with his arm stretched out, lives in Orlando;

Tom Hanks (not the actor), 69, in front, lives outside Atlanta; and Bob DeVenezia, 70, crouched in front, lives in Naples, Florida. Cinnamon Beach, is a stretch of sand in The Hammock, and was identified by the postal code of Palm Coast. The story of the reunion photo has gone viral in the media. After the reunion photo shoot, the men had lunch at JT’s Seafood Shack.

Coming soon to Palm Coast? Retailers — including Bed Bath & Beyond, BJ’s, LongHorn Steakhouse — show interest. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Matchmaker, matchmaker: A government/retail matchmaker may have just have made Palm Coast a match — seven of them, actually — but whether any of the finds will turn into a catch remains to be seen. Retail recruiting company Buxton, which contracted with the city in July 2015 to help the city attract retailers, released a list of seven possibilities at a City Council workshop April 26: Bed

Bath and Beyond, Save-A-Lot, Buffalo Wings & Rings, Cato, Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar, LongHorn Steakhouse and BJ’s Wholesale Club. Save-A-Lot believes Palm Coast could support two of its locations, a Buxton representative said. Buxton had initially reached out to 23 retailers that the company’s databases and algorithms indicated might be a good match for the city, but most didn’t respond. These seven did, and Buxton is still trying to woo them, Buxton Senior Account Executive

Matthew Tate told City Council members. Whether a match works out or not is in the details, Tate said. “It can be very specific,” he said. “Once we find out who’s living here, and kind of your unique thumbprint, then we want to put on the lens of the retailer.” Some retailers want to know how many people in a community hold boating licenses, or how many are college students. Many want to know the driving time from the nearest interstate to possible site locations, or the

average drive time from their potential customers. Fast food and gym locations tend to want a 15-minute drive time or less, sporting goods stores can handle 20 minutes, and hardware stores 20 to 25 minutes, Tate said. “We know traffic counts around every Pizza Hut in the United States,” he said. “We know distance to interstates, preferred distance to interstates.” Buxton gets customer data and sales data from all of its 425 active retail clients, Tate said, and uses that information to make matches. “We’re not only matching to those Buxton clients,” he said. “We’re able to apply that methodology we’ve learned over 20 years to those non-Buxton-partners as well.” Tate’s presentation at the meeting was the second Buxton update before the City Council since the council voted to contract with the company, but city staff members get updates every week or two.

“I’d say the Buxton partnership has really changed our mindset to looking at retail in a different way,” City Administration Coordinator Beau Falgout said. “How we’re dealing ... with retailers, I think, is a lot more positive.” There were some revelations from the partnership: Most retailers seem to want “360 residential” surrounding them, Falgout said, so locations on Palm Coast Parkway are hotter than those on State Road 100. And, he said, “Their timelines really matter. When they spend the capital, they want that return very quickly. ... They want the store up quick, and they want to see a return.” City Manager Jim Landon said that just because things don’t work out with a retailer one year doesn’t mean they won’t the next. “Just because you get a ‘not interested’ today, doesn’t mean you give up on them,” he said. “You have to develop long-term relationships.”

PLANET EARTH

Earth Day at Washington Oaks set attendance records in its 27th year. JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

Merrick Smith had the most energy-efficient mode of transportation for Earth Day at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. The 13-month-old was “driving” a car fueled by his dad, Kris Smith. Families seemed to make up most of the estimated 2,400 people who came to the annual event, sponsored by the Friends of Washington Oaks, so it wasn’t surprising that the children’s hands-on area by the water was the most popular place to be. Lidiya Korogodsky picked the perfect time to visit her family in Florida. The grandmother from Brooklyn was having fun watching her grandchildren Alex and Katie paint and blow supersized bubbles. Along with fun and games, there were vendors, lots of food, live music and special presentations by Whitney Lab Sea Turtle Hospital and Wild About Birds. There were also guided Audubon walks and Butterflies in the Gardens with Ranger Joe (Woodbury).

Lauren Coffey, 4, takes a break to hug Reba, a miniature Corgi.

Sam Pacetti was one of the performers at Earth Day at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park.

EARTH DAY’S ORIGINS Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, had the idea for a national day to focus on the environment after a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in coastto-coast rallies. Earth Day went global in 1990, with 200 million people in 141 countries putting environmental issues onto the world stage.

Should possessing small amounts of marijuana be a criminal offense? Or should it be a civil citation, like a parking fine? That’s the issue Palm Coast and Flagler County officials hope to take on in a proposed meeting where they will discuss Sheriff James Manfre’s proposal to downgrade the punishment law enforcement officers mete out for marijuana possession, letting deputies issue a citation instead of criminal charges. Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts, who plans to attend the meeting, said at a City Council workshop April 26 that he doesn’t oppose the idea that marijuana possession should be handled without criminal charges, but believes such a change should be statewide. “Personally, I think decriminalization of small amounts is probably long overdue,” he said. “But I’m going to push very, very hard that the Florida Association of Counties, the Florida League of Cities, pressure our legislators in Tallahassee to deal with it in a uniform, statewide manner,” regardless of what Palm Coast and other local cities decide to do, he said. But a patchwork of policies could cause problems, he said. “If community A says, ‘Oh no, we’re not going to do this,’ and B says, ‘We’re going to reduce the penalty to a civil citation,’ you are now creating dissimilarities in behavior, dissimilarities of treatment,” he said. City Attorney Bill Reischman said a number of Florida communities, including Orlando and Daytona Beach, have been discussing lessening the penalty. The fact that the change involves a civil citation does not mean that city code enforcement officers would be involved, City Manager Jim Landon said. Reischmann said many other cities considering the change have their own city police departments, and Palm Coast does not. But, he said, “I think if there’s a positive of this, it’s the argument that, is this something that we really want to use our criminal justice system — the courts, the police, the prisons — for this type of illegal activity. And if not, what are the options?” Councilwoman Heidi Shipley noted that when someone is charged with a drug-related crime, that can affect their life decades later. “If you take a misdemeanor or a felony ... you’re taking that through your whole life,” she said. “It’s going to be something on there — where, you know, in the ’80s you may have smoked something and you don’t want it to follow you your whole life if it was just something small.” The meeting will be held at 8:45 a.m. May 11 at the county Emergency Operations Center, behind the Government Services Building on State Road 100.

A 2-year-old girl found unresponsive in a Palm Coast pool the evening of Saturday, April 23, died at the hospital April 25. The toddler, the daughter of F-Section residents Douglas Seitz and Mandee Seitz, was rushed to Halifax Hospital by rescuers, then to an intensive care unit at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. She died at about 11:50 p.m. April 25, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. “Our detectives have concluded their investigation and no criminal charges will be filed,” the news release stated. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family. “ Someone called 911 after the girl was found unresponsive in the pool, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. Her father performed CPR on her until a deputy arrived at about 7:01 p.m. The deputy, who noted in a report that the little girl was not breathing and had no pulse, continued CPR until paramedics arrived.

Acid spill shuts down Oceanshore Boulevard

The following is an edited news release from the Flagler County communications office: A sulfuric acid spill closed part of Oceanshore Boulevard for hours April 21 after a container of 50% acid solution tumbled off a flatbed truck at the State Road 100 intersection and split open, spilling 300 gallons onto the road. There were no injuries and no evacuations. The Dumont Chemical Co. truck lost its load at about 9:38 a.m. A St. Johns County hazmat team was called out to clean up the spill, and local police officers directed drivers away from the area. The boardwalk was taped off, and swimmers were told to avoid the area. Oceanshore Boulevard fully reopened at about 11:15 p.m. April 21. Charges against the driver are pending as the investigation continues, Flagler Beach Police Capt. Matt Doughney said.

“Who took the legs off my mealworm?” a voice rang out at the Flagler Beach Pier before sunrise on Friday, April 22. The question was asked by Will Naughton, the artist who created the oversized mealworm for the i3 Marine Science students’ Earth Day mural on a blackboard at the Funky Pelican restaurant, at the Flagler Beach pier. The fact — whether mealworms have legs — was briefly questioned, but Naughton’s expertise was acknowledged. “Will knows his bugs,” teacher Courtney VandeBunte said. And the discussion was over. Naughton was one of more than 20 teenagers working on the project at the pier at 5:30 a.m. The purpose was to raise awareness about the growing problem

MEALWORMS 101

The mealworm is the larval stage of the yellow mealworm (grub beetle). It is not a worm. Although the grub resembles a worm, it has six small, jointed legs. Scientists at Stanford University discovered that the mealworm can exist on a diet of plastic foam (such as Styrofoam). Bacteria in the worm’s gut biodegrades the plastic during digestion.

of plastics in the ocean and on the shoreline, and the importance of eliminating Styrofoam containers, and recycling. The teens are VandeBunte’s i3 Academy Marine Science students, and the project was part of a series of events the class has been working on. The mural was an extra credit project, and, even though they started their day a couple of hours early, the students were expected to be at school on time. “I am surprised at the turnout,” VandeBunte said. “I begged them to come, and I was trying to form carpools, but I am amazed at how many actually showed up.” A phone alarm sounded. It was 6:30 a.m., the normal time one of the students wakes up to get ready to go to school. Today, it was a

TO ADVERTISE reminder he had been at the beach for an hour. The students each contributed to the mural, adding facts about nurdles (a very small pellet of plastic that serves as raw material in the manufacture of plastic products), pictures of turtles, Earth, the Old Kings Elementary School owl, and the mealworm. Ellen Sperber, whose second grade class at Old Kings Elementary has been working with VandeBunte’s kids, was also thrilled with the turnout, and surprised when one of her own students, Matilda Gardener, stopped by just as the older students were cleaning up. “It is so important that so many high school students came out,” Sperber said. “They are able to give a greater understanding to the younger kids.”

who were searching for a stolen car, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The car, a black 2015 Chevrolet Cruze, had OnStar. OnStar sent police coordinates for the car — near the Hammock Dunes Parkway — then remotely shut off its engine. A deputy checked that area, but didn’t find the car. Then, OnStar sent new coordinates: The car was somewhere near European Village. Deputies found the empty Chevy backed into a marked parking spot at European Village. It wasn’t damaged, and they returned it to its owner.

TEEN SKIPS SCHOOL, HANGS OUT AT WALMART 8:53a.m. First block of Pope Lane. Missing Juvenile: A woman caught her stepson smoking pot at about 12:20 a.m. She told the boy, a 15-year-old, to go to bed, and they’d deal with it after school the next day, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The boy left the house at about 6:30 a.m., and the woman went into his room to see if there was anything there he wasn’t supposed to have. She found a note from the boy saying that he was going to his grandmother’s house in Satsuma, and that he wasn’t running away. The woman called the grandmother, who hadn’t seen the boy. She called his school, and they hadn’t seen him either. So she called the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy found the teen at Walmart.

LYING: BAD WAY TO GET A COP’S ATTENTION 8:04 a.m. 5000 block of Palm Avenue, Bunnell. Domestic disturbance: A woman called 911 and said her boyfriend had slapped her and a deputy came to her home. Then, she told the deputy that she’d been arguing with her boyfriend — because he’d put a passcode on his phone, leaving her unable to use it — and that he actually hadn’t slapped her, but she’d told the 911 dispatcher that he had so that police would arrive faster. She said she’d been afraid that the fight might turn physical. The boyfriend told deputies that the woman woke him up screaming and yelling about the phone, and that he didn’t know what she was talking about and then heard her saying she was calling the cops. A man convicted of raping his 13-year-old step-daughter has been sentenced to 25 years in state prison. Circuit Judge Matthew Foxman sentenced Waldemar Rivera to a 25-year-term, minus 311 days he has already served, during an April 26 sentencing hearing. No witnesses spoke on Rivera’s behalf. Assistant State Attorney Christina Opsahl argued for a 30-year-sentence, noting that Rivera, now 36, had raised the victim since she was 3. He’d also been arrested on charges of battery, disorderly conduct and driving under the influence in the past, had few local ties and had spoken of moving to his native Puerto Rico if he were placed on probation, she said. “There’s not a day less than 30 years that would be an appropriate sentence,” she said. “There are significant other aggravators here. ... This charge itself includes an age range. It

is for a victim 12 to 18 years old. The victim in this case was 13. ... (Rivera) didn’t just come into her life; he had raised her as his own since she was 3 years old. She called him dad.” The attack occurred May 11, 2014. Rivera gave the victim beer and marijuana before attacking her, Opsahl said, something she said indicated that Rivera was trying to get the girl impaired, and that the rape was therefore premeditated. “Mr. Rivera knew exactly what he was doing that day,” she said. Regina Nunnally, Rivera’s attorney, said that a psychosexual evaluation found that Rivera “did not exhibit signs of sexual deviancy” because he didn’t show signs of attraction to pre-

pubescent children, or compulsive sexual behavior. “We did not see the repeated, compulsive acts that would come from someone we would consider a danger to society,” she said. She said the fact that Rivera had given his stepdaughter booze and marijuana before the attack didn’t indicate premeditation, just poor decisionmaking. She asked the judge for 10 years in prison and 10 years of probation. Foxman noted before issuing his sentence that victims who were raped by their caretakers “develop tremendous trust issues in life, and really, really bad intimacy issues of a great depth. ... Some of them never recover.” “Make no mistake about it sir, you’ve created a lifetime victim,” he said to Rivera. He ordered Rivera to register as a sexual predator within 24 hours of his release, noting that the usual time frame is 48. Rivera declined to make a statement at the sentencing hearing. A jury had found him guilty March 23 of sexual battery by a person of custodial authority.

Someone called 911 April 24 after seeing the male half of an arguing couple snap a stop sign off at its base “in a fit of rage” and throw it down the street at the intersection of Bainbridge Lane and Barrington Drive, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. When deputies arrived at about 7:30 p.m., they found Zachary Richard Conn, 28, in a car outside. Deputies told him to stay in the car, but he tried to run into a house on Bainbridge, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office charging affidavit. Deputies charged Conn with felony criminal mischief, felony grand theft and resisting arrest without violence. They also charged his father — 54-yearold Russell Edward Conn, who they’d heard yelling for his son to run into the house when deputies were trying to stop him — with resisting arrest without violence. “The theft of the stop sign resulted in a temporary interruption of safe traffic control for the intersection and jeopardized the safety of the general public,” a deputy wrote in a charging affidavit. A Palm Coast Public Works employee told deputies that the sign post, which carried the stop sign and also the two street signs, will cost $500$600 to replace once the cost of the materials and labor — including the time taken for a city employee to set up a temporary sign April 24 — are factored in.

Rivera will be registered as a sexual predator when he is released.

The following is an edited news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office: A Palatka man was arrested April 25 after the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office alerted Flagler County deputies that a stolen car was heading into Flagler County at about 12:52 p.m. Deputies spotted the newermodel white Kia four-door, occupied by three people, at the intersection of U.S. 1 and West State Road 100. When deputies tried to stop the car, the driver refused to stop. Deputies did not initiate a pursuit. The Kia headed north on U.S. 1 and crashed after the driver lost control while turning right onto Royal Palms Parkway. Two of the three suspects were detained for questioning, but a third suspect fled into nearby woods. Deputies searched the area around the crash site. K-9 deputies and the Flagler County FireFlight helicopter helped with the search. As a precaution, Rymfire Elementary was placed on code orange because of the search. This meant students and staff remained inside their classrooms and participated in no outdoor activities. The first two suspects were not charged. The third suspect, the driver, was apprehended after he walked out from behind 62 Reidsville Drive. That man, 22-year-old Zacchaeus Nelson, was charged with grand theft auto, resisting arrest without violence, and possession of cannabis under 20 grams.

For the

past 13 years he has lived in Palm Coast, FL. Barry leaves behind his children Larry Brick and Becky (Brandon) Jones, his 3 grandchildren Ryder, Hudson and Ashlyn Jones and his two sisters Bonnie (George) Zink and Belle Brick. He was pre-deceased by his wife Peggy and parents Earl and Dorothy Brick. Barry was loved and will be truly missed.

Palm Coast breaks ground on new wastewater plant A new, $25 million wastewater treatment plant “will be our No. 1 priority in terms of keeping pace with anticipated future growth,” Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts said at a city groundbreaking for the new plant the morning of April 26. The city’s current plant on Utility Drive, built in the early 1970s, is nearing capacity, and without a new one, the city would eventually have to stop expanding. And a system overload, Netts said, could be catastrophic — but it won’t happen in Palm Coast. “Even though that kind of thing happens time and time again in other cities, it doesn’t happen here in Palm Coast,” he said. The new plant will be built next to Water Treatment Plant 3, off U.S. 1 about three miles north of Palm Coast Parkway. It will add 2 million additional gallons per day of wastewater treatment capacity, and will use

technology that produces effluent that nearly meets drinking water standards. That effluent will be used for irrigation, according to a city of Palm Coast news release. “Every drop of water that we reclaim is one less drop of potable water that would be otherwise wasted,” Netts said. The plant will be funded with a low-interest loan from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, according to the news release. Construction is expected to take 18 months.

FPC senior to represent Florida at Congress of Future Medical Leaders Caitlyn Bernardini, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, has been selected as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts from June 25 to 27. The honors-only program is for high school students interested in becoming physicians

or going into medical research fields. Caitlyn was nominated by Dr. Robert Darling, the medical director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, to represent Florida. The nomination was based on her academic achievement, leadership potential, and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. While in Massachusetts, Caitlyn will join students from across the United States to hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading medical research. She will also get advice from top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school.

Insane Inflatable 5K was held April 23 at Town Center.

Cornelia’s Commercial Corner

Smiles and shrieks of happiness filled Town Center on April 23 as the Insane Inflatable 5K blew into town. Participants ran through 11 inflatable challenges over 3.1 miles. The run drew in people of all ages thanks to the design for a fun run — an untimed event. The founders of Insane Inflatable started with an idea in a hotel lobby bar four years ago in Orlando. They wanted to come up with a new 5K idea unlike any other. As the night went on, they started to draw inflatable ideas on bar napkins. The next morning, they sent their ideas to an inflatable manufacturer, who agreed they could make the designs. They wanted to create the race for anyone and everyone. Three years later, they travel the country bringing what may be the most fun 5K to towns like Palm Coast.

Boy with leukemia feels the love at school Orange was the color of ‘Bray Day’ on April 21, to support kindergartner Brayden Norton-Henry. JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

Orange is the awareness color for leukemia. In classrooms, the front office, and on the playground at Bunnell Elementary, orange was worn in solidarity for one of their own on Thursday, April 21: kindergarten student Brayden Norton-Henry. “We are celebrating Brayden’s one year, since diagnosis,” his mother Brittney Hedetniemi, said. “He was diagnosed on April 21, 2015, and we wanted to celebrate with the community that has been behind us, what we like to call ‘Brayden’s Army.’” Brayden joined Victoria Mayhew’s kindergarten class after spring break, and he’s fitting right in. He’s fitting into a lot of things, like baseball – he plays in the pitching machine league for Flagler Baseball. “He has physical therapy three days a week, we go to Arnold Palmer Hospital twice a month for chemo and procedures, and he has chemo at home every night,” Hedetniemi said. How do you explain Leukemia to a kindergartner? “Break it down into their terms,” Hedetniemi said. “We have a program at the hospital (Arnold Palmer) called Child Life, and they have been amazing at explaining to Brayden what is happening. We try to be up front with Brayden, but on his level. He

knows when he is going to have to have a procedure, he knows when he is going to have to have blood drawn, and he knew when he was going to lose his hair again.” THANKFUL FOR HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS

Many of the orange shirts are embroidered with sayings like “Hope for Bray.” Each was made by Lisa Bordis in her new Facebook shop, All in Stitches. “We made some for quite a few of our friends,” Bordis said. “Brayden has a baseball game tonight, and they wanted shirts to wear.” Hedetniemi and Bordis were children when they first met. Their mothers worked together at the former Ormond Memorial Hospital. Meet Braeden Kopec —

Aqua Boy

Jason Obenauer

Braeden has spent most of his life in the water. “Braeden feels like he has to get wet, even if it’s just for one day. He always has to be in the water. He must have saltwater running through his veins.” RACHAEL KOPEC, Braeden’s mother

ith a middle name such as “Dune,” one could only predict Braeden Kopec’s future as a surfing champion. When he was just a day old, Kopec, now 9 years old, was introduced to what would become his “future home,” when his parents left the hospital and went straight to the beach. At 3 years old, the young surfer began his surf life on the nose of the long board of his father, Brian. “I can remember yelling at him, ‘Stand up! Stand up!’” Brian Kopec said. “I would stay down and maintain my balance, and he would hold onto my head, but then he got the feeling of being by himself riding that wave. And, I can remember people looking at us like we were nuts.” To add to the legend, he learned to swim before he could even walk. Braeden went through survival swim, a swimming program for infants. “He learned how to walk in the pool on a shelf, holding on to the side,” Rachael Kopec said. “It’s always been about the water. Braeden feels like he has to get wet, even if it’s just for one day. He has to be in the water. He must have saltwater running through his veins.” As accomplished as his trophy case reveals, Braeden does not handle surfing like the typical surfer. According to his father, one of the famous surfing quotes

goes, “The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun,” meaning, the surfer who is winning is having the most fun. Not so with Braden. His biggest aim is to simply have fun and make a difference in people’s lives, regardless of the outcome of the competition. His father recalls a time when a kid was about to miss a heat at a competition, so Braeden paddled the kid’s jersey out to him, which allowed for the kid to compete. “I asked him why did he do it, and he said because it was the right thing to do,” Brian Kopec said. “He had just learned the lesson of always doing the right thing at a Wednesday night church service.” “But, doing the right things is not always the easiest,” Braeden said. There was also a time when Braden won a “Why I Should Win a Custom Matt Kechele Surfboard” contest, and he wrote about how a friend who was going through a tough time deserved the board more than anyone. He customized the board and gave it to his friend. Braeden has also led the renovation of a local skate park, and he hosts the “Braeden’s Annual Super Grom Surf Contest,” with the goal that everyone walks away with a smile and feels like a winner, not just those who make it to a final heat. “It’s not always about winning,” he said. “It’s about having fun surfing.” Notwithstanding, Braeden also

BRAEDEN’S WINNING WAYS

Braeden Kopec has already won more than 100 trophies, including the Sun Bum “Stoke of the Year” Sonny Award (above), the ESA/ NCFL Season Championships for 12U and 14U and the 2013 Sportsmanship of the Year for Grom Surf Series.

possesses a competitive nature. As often as he surfs, Braden inevitably makes mistakes, but even then, he quickly gets over it. “He usually asks to go and do a free surf, which is when they just surf at a distance outside of competition,” Rachel said. “So, he goes out into the ocean, washes off any frustration and then comes back smiling and happy.” “I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a time when he’s coming out of the water and not wearing his smile,” Brian Kopec said, “because he’s just happy to be in the ocean with his buddies.”

e all love the underdog story, because we’ve all played the underdog role at one time or another in our lives. The way district tournaments are set up in certain sports, where every team gets a chance to play for the title and advance to the postseason, we can always expect to see a dominant team fall short of taking care of “easy business.” In this area, there have been many memorable upsets, but I’d like to highlight two inferior Davids who have slain Goliath. The Seabreeze baseball team won the most recent unlikely game, upsetting Deltona, who was 18-7, 11-1 in district play, on Tuesday, April 19, to advance to the district championship and postseason. The Sandcrabs had only won nine of their 24 games this season, which is a record for the 25-year coach Anthony Campella. Deltona had beaten Seabreeze twice in the regular season. So, how did they pull it off? Some may say the Sandcrabs were just better on that day, or the Wolves suffered an off night. Some may argue luck. Who knows? But then there are the 2014 Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs volleyball team, who had lost all 18 regular season games before winning the opening district tournament game over district favorites First Coast. While I agree that it’s highly possible to lose to a competitive team on a random day, I tend to believe there’s a little of this in all major upsets. When I played JV football, I arrogantly unstrapped my chin guard and folded my arms, because the other team couldn’t do anything on defense. But, the team replaced the smaller runner with a bigger, stronger and faster player, and he knocked me back where I rolled three times, and he sent my helmet 15 yards downfield. I took them lightly, and I paid for it. Fortunately for us, we won the game, but not all dominant teams win at the end. And, when they don’t, we who love upsets get to celebrate.

Flagler Xtreme cheerleading is making the most with what they have.

ound on a large field behind Wadsworth Elementary School, surrounded by dozens of practicing flag footballers, you won’t hear the Flagler Xtreme cheerleading squad complain that they don’t have the facilities and training gear their competition may be able to boast of. You will, however, observe multiple-time champions continuing to develop their craft. Flagler Xtreme All-Stars, made up of girls 4-18 years old, have become a consistent statewide and even nationwide championship contender, and they’re doing it with limited resources. “We’re at a disadvantage because most all-star teams have gyms; we don’t,” said Chanel Lamanna, one of the program’s coaches. “We practice on a field. But, I think we actually have the advantage, because we don’t have the luxury of the spring floor and all the other stuff. So, once we get out there, they do well to hold their lines.” As if practicing on a field wasn’t tough enough, Lamanna says her girls’ conditioning includes running up and down the field, doing bear crawls, squats and other exercises most non-cheerleaders

2016 1st place National Champions of Flagler Cheer and Dance Association 2016 1st place State champion FCDA 2016 3rd Reach the Beach 2016 1st place junior Stunt group FCDA 2016 3rd Cheer Champion Express 2016 1st place spirit award FCDA 2015 1st place Beach battle FCDA 2015 2nd National’s FCDA 2015 4th States FCDA 2015 1st Spirit Award FCDA

wouldn’t assume they do. That exercise regiment, mixed with a commitment to show up as often as practice is held, has caused her program to drop from 50 cheerleaders at the beginning to roughly the current 15. But, whatever she has her girls doing, it’s a winning formula, because they keep bringing hardware back to Palm Coast. In their most recent competition, the All-Stars won the Florida Dance and Cheer National championship with zero point deductions, a rarity in the sport. Gunner Parson

Pirates’ most decorated player?

Flagler Palm Coast alum Lee Ann Spivey, a current South Florida Bull, was selected as the 33rd draft pick by the Houston Scrap Yard Dawgs in the National Pro Fastpitch League. Spivey recorded her 37th homerun on Monday, breaking the Bulls’ all-time record with three games remaining in the season. During her four years with FPC, she was selected to the 8A All-State team, batted .525 for her career, led the Five-Star Conference in homers three of her four years, and was awarded many other honors.

Senior Andre Bodison leaves Matanzas as “arguably the most decorated football player to have played for the Black and Blue,” according to head coach Robert Ripley. Bodison signed his letter of intent to forward his career and education at the New Mexico Military Institute. Bodison is a three-year varsity starter who leads Matanzas in career receptions (113), yards receiving (1,474) and is third in touchdowns (14). He participated in the 2015 FACA, Central Florida and FloridaGeorgia All Star games, and he was selected to the USA Football National Select Team. Bodison was also selected to the FACA All-District Team twice, also a two-time selection for First-Team All-Area Volusia-Flagler. He was also selected as the 2015 FACA 6A District-6 Player of the Year.

An All-American Matanzas senior lacrosse player Gunner Parson was recently named an All-American. “It feels amazing,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without my teams and coaches.” Parson led the Pirates in scoring each of the past four years, totaling 30 goals and 29 assists this year. He led Matanzas to back-to-back district championships, the only two in the program’s history. Parson also recently signed with the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina. Parson’s teammate, senior Jake Cohill, will be joining him at Mount Olive. Cohill scored a total of 83 goals and 55 assists over his four-year career at Matanzas.

he seventh-annual Moonlit Gala was held April 24 at the Hammock Beach Resort by the Florida Hospital Flagler Foundation. The sold-out event drew 300 attendees, including foundation board members, hospital executive board members, hospital employees and vendors and community supporters of the 20/20 membership club. “We are really enthused by not only the community support externally but also the internal support within the hospital,” said Moonlit Gala chairwoman Laura Gilvary. The goal of the Moonlit Gala is to promote world-class health care in Flagler County. People come to support the foundation so the hospital can fulfill its mission: “to strive to extend the healing ministry of Christ.” The event is expected to have raised $125,000. Every dollar collected through fundraising stays in Flagler County. This year’s charities were for diabetes awareness, Flagler Cares, and Florida Hospital Fla-

gler Care. Flagler Cares is a program for health and wellness for the underserved and needy in our community. Florida Hospital Flagler Care provides education and clinical support to patients who are uninsured or on Medicaid — patients who use the emergency room most often. The fundraiser for diabetes touched home for Florida Hospital Flagler Chairman Tony Papandrea as well as Gilvary, the event’s chairwoman. Papandrea’s wife avoided medication for her Type 2 diabetes by making lifestyle changes. Gilvary’s husband has Type 1 diabetes. She got involved to make sure that his voice is heard, and so that the community can learn more about the disease. Not many may know that diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in Flagler County. In November, the Florida Flagler Hospital Foundation will be facilitating different events to bring awareness, education and diabetes testing to Flagler County during World Diabetes Month.

very dog, cat and yes, even bird, has their own personality quirks. Things they do that are unique to them. Years ago, Shadow and Luna were part of our family. Shadow, a Labrador mix, came first, and then Luna, a young, upstart, golden retriever pup. They were “besties” from the start. They had an odd dinner routine. Their bowls were side by side, something I wouldn’t dream of trying with my current “lads,” and halfway through eating they would switch bowls. Same food, same amount in each, no one was greedy — a canine choreographed dinner dance. We also had a Quaker parrot, who would let himself out of his cage, hop onto a nearby desk and drop the bills into the trashcan (or floor). One day we caught him “red-taloned,” and he simply turned and got back into his

Oh, brother! Check out these New York pastries The young Dudkewic brothers have opened a cafe, filled with New York delights. JEFF DAWSEY STAFF WRITER

The young Dudkewic brothers — Luke, Paul and John, who is a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School — recently opened the Sarafina Café at 99 Old Kings Road S. It’s right next to E’lan Family Hair Studio, owned by the boys’ parents, Tim and Lucille. Former receptionists at E’lan, the trio decided to embark on this new business venture to provide their parents’ salon customers with a more cooling and relaxed environment. They also hope to attract other locals and former northerners: All of their coffee, Italian ice, pastries and gelatos are shipped from New York and New Jersey. “We’ve seen people sitting in the waiting room or sitting in their cars, and it’s just too hot outside,” Luke Dudkewic said. “We have TVs, Wi-Fi and a whole bunch of

stuff for people to enjoy.” Sarafina took over the former Bizcard Xpress store. The brothers combined both of the store’s rooms, and now have a spacious shop that has already experienced heavy traffic. “It’s their store, and I want them to run with it,” said Tim Dudkewic, the boys’ father. “They got a bright future ahead of them, if they do it the right way.” Just as the Dudkewics have established a family environment at E’lan, the brothers hope their café will become just that — a place where families will be able

to build fresh, life-lasting memories, like Tim’s recollection of his childhood days with Italian ice squishy cups. “It brings back memories to the New Yorkers,” he said. “Palm Coast is becoming a little New York.” To assist with the shop, the Dudkewics called Desire’a Bailey and Katie Spicer, whom Tim calls his kids. Both formerly served as employees at the Dudkewics’ hair salon, and both lived with the Dudkewics when they were homeless for brief stints. “We definitely wanted them

both on our team,” Luke Dudkewic said. “They’re both superhard workers, and that’s what you want working for you.” When the café opened a few weeks ago, the line of customers extended out of the shop, and the Dudkewic brothers hope the community reception will continue to support their new journey. “If we get the results that they’re looking for, by making this a family place like our salon is a family place, then we’ve succeeded,” Tim Dudkewic said. Call 338-3168, or visit the Sarafina Café Facebook page.

Some of Sarafina’s most sought after delights include the red velvet cheesecake, the salted caramel cupcake, grandma’s key lime cake and tuxedo cookies.

Palm Coast Arts Foundation introduces Town Center improvements with Picnic and Pops

Landscaping, plantings and the office have been completed at the Palm Coast Arts Foundation site.

Phase One of the Palm Coast Arts Foundation is complete. The landscaping and planting is done and the office space has been moved to the new Arts Foundation site in Town Center. This weekend over 1,000 people are expected to attend Picnic and Pops and catch the vision of the future of the property. The foundation had hopes to have the stage complete for this event, but due to permanent bathrooms being required, a stage will be brought in with a tent. The stage should be completed by July. Executive Director Nancy Crouch found it rewarding for the PCAF to finally see something happening with the site. Membership is growing, due to the start of the construction. The members are very

supportive, by paying annual dues and help with operations. Within four to five years of the completion of the stage and its roof, the Events Center construction should begin, a $7 million project. If you are interested in donating to the Palm Coast Arts Foundation, there is currently a paver campaign where you can donate to have a paver brick laid in Town Center. So far, 50 pavers have been donated and are being placed at the PCAF site in Town Center. To learn more about the Palm Coast Arts Foundation, visit palmcoastartsfoundation. com. —LISA WOLFE

What DOCTORS say about Neurogenx “Finally, a non-pharmacological protocol with dramatic results for chronic nerve syndromes.”

- Seth Steber, DPM Carlisle, Pennsylvania

“Extremely effective . . . markedly improves pain and quality of life without the side effects of drugs.” - Richard Jacoby, DPM Scottsdale, Arizona

“It’s giving many of our patients a great amount of relief from their neuropathy symptoms, including numbness and pain.”

- Darren Silvester, DPM Pleasanton, Texas

“It has an 87% success rate, and you don’t get those kinds of results from other treatments.”

- M. Butler-Murphy, DPM Manhassett, New York

What PATIENTS say about Neurogenx “I have been whee chairbound since 2006. Within 1 week of treatment I could get out of my wheelchair to my walker by myself, something I haven’t been able to do for years. I am also sleeping like there is no tomorrow. I can’t wait to see what the future treatments bring.” -Richard K. “I had been unable to get a full night’s rest in over a year, and lost most of the feeling in my feet due to diabetes. After just a few Neurogenx treatments, I am getting feeling back in my feet, and happy to say that I am sleeping through the night.” - Jerry M.

“Diabetic neuropathy had made my toes feel like the skin was sanded off. But during my third treatment, the miracle happened! The muscles in my legs started tensing, flexing and moving - they came back to life. When I walked across the rug I could actually feel the fibers for the first time in years. The Lyrica I had been taking only masked the problem and had some pretty nasty side effects. I’m now Lyrica-free and saving almost $300/month in drug costs. There is hope! Miracles do happen.” - Todd W.
