HAPPY 90TH!

INSIDE

This week, a group of pals who have been having lunch together weekly for 15 years got together to celebrate the 90th birthday of Oliver Wendell Davis, a man who lied about his age in order to serve his country. “I wanted to be a soldier,” Davis recalled, He got his wish, and served from 1943 to 1946. Palm Coast VFW Post 8696 was in attendance to post the colors and present Davis with a certificate of gratitude for selfless service. “It was awfully nice,” Davis said of the gesture.

BRIEFS Palm Coast woman found dead in surf Two turtle patrol volunteers found a woman with no pulse lying in the surf the morning of Sunday, May 8. The woman, identified as 50-year-old Palm Coast resident Patricia Darvish, was pronounced dead by paramedics at 7:22 a.m. No foul play is suspected, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said. The turtle patrol volunteers were on their morning patrol north of North 23rd Street near the Flagler Beach/Beverly Beach line when they saw Darvish in the surf and pulled her out of the water with the help of two bystanders, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office report. Another bystander called 911 at about 7:12 a.m., according to the report, and a Flagler Beach Police officer tried to perform CPR. A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy noted in a report that Darvish had no obvious signs of trauma on her body, and had been found fully clothed. Her car was parked on Oceanshore Boulevard south of where she was found. Darvish’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Three killed, four

hurt in I-95 crash

Three people were killed and four more were injured May 7 when a maroon sport utility vehicle carrying seven people lost control on northbound Interstate 95 near the Matanzas Woods Parkway exit in northern Flagler County. Florida Highway Patrol troopers

?

were dispatched to the crash site at about 2 p.m. The four people injured in the crash were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. The victims, residents of Immokalee, Florida, were in a 2002 Ford Explorer in the northbound inside lane when the Explorer’s driver, 25-year-old Mario Lopez Roblero, tried to merge into the center lane, according to a an FHP news release. A 2013 Ford F-150, driven by 66-year-old Varnville, South Carolina resident Lonnie Grant, was merging into the center lane at the same time, from the outside lane. The F-150 was further into the lane than the Explorer, a witness told FHP troopers. Grant steered back into the outside lane, but Roblero overcorrected, and the SUV veered across the northbound lanes and then flipped multiple times before coming to rest on its roof on the grass shoulder east of I-95, according to the release. Grant pulled over and stopped. Of the three people who died, one was 22-year-old Vigai Lopez Roblero, who died at Florida Hospital Flagler, and the others were 19-year-old Roberto V. Morales and 17-year-old Adonias Gonzalez Vasquez, who both died at the scene of the crash. Mario Lopez Roblero had critical injuries, and 25-year-old Maribel Velasquez Perez, 18-year-old Esterbano Perez Roblero and 4-yearold William I. Lopez had serious injuries. The crash shut down all northbound lanes of I-95 north of Matanzas Woods Parkway for about two miles, until one lane reopened at about 4:20 p.m. All lanes reopened at about 6:45 p.m.

Overdue? City plans fire station upgrades Fire Station 22, built in 1977, doesn’t meet code. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

You might think a building that houses firefighters would be as fire-safe as they come. But not if it was built in ’77: Palm Coast Fire Station 22 needs its smoke detectors replaced, among other things, and the city wants to spend up to $100,000 to bring the old building up to code. Fire Station 22 — the city’s first government-owned building, transferred to the new city by ITT — doesn’t meet today’s code requirements, and has basic safety problems. It needs an exhaust for the truck bays, and sensors on the bay doors. There should be a firewall between the bay and the living space. And it doesn’t meet wind safety standards passed after Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992. The current situation, Mayor Jon Netts said at a City Council workshop after a morning tour of the firehouse, is “unacceptable.” “If this were a commercial building in Palm Coast, our fire safety inspectors would give it quite a negative check mark,” he said. “Based on what I saw this morning, if that building is going to stay on another year, these improvements are necessary.” The station houses three city Fire Department staff members plus two county Emergency Services staff members. Fire trucks have to be custom-built to fit the small bays at Fire Station 22, on Palm Coast Parkway at Clubhouse Drive. Emergency vehicles are GPS-linked to the system that controls the city’s traffic lights, so when the fire truck pulls out, the system begins clearing the intersections ahead.

and one county ambulance are based there. It’s a bit cramped, even for the equipment: The ’70s-era truck bays are too small for most modern fire trucks, so the city has to have trucks custombuilt to fit them. Then there are the cosmetic issues: Though the city finally ripped out the old shag carpet, the kitchen is worn and needs replacing. The hot water heater leaks. The lights could be upgraded to more energy-efficient LEDs. Ideally, City Manager Jim Landon told the council, “you would tear this (station) down, and build a new fire station at this location,” or else on city-owned

INSIDE THE FLAMES Usually, firefighters can say, ‘We didn’t start the fire.’ But in this training exercise, they actually did. Find out what it’s like on the front lines. CAROL KINES GUEST WRITER

ABOUT THIS SERIES This is the first article in a public awareness series by the Flagler Beach Photography Club intended to reveal the trials and humanity of local rescuers who serve in times of emergency. In this installment, five “photo-tunists” captured images spanning three days of training exercises with both the Palm Coast and Flagler County fire departments. uman lungs blister at 150 degrees, yet through billowing black smoke, six Palm Coast firefighters in protective gear emerge after 20 minutes in a Flashover training container blasting 300 to 963 degrees. This extreme exposure imprints the language of heat and fire on their senses for rapid recognition of future Flashover conditions, the point where fire reaches for oxygen and jumps across large spaces to consume everything in its path. Sensing that point, the trained rescuer responds, “Get out now!” Next, “probies” (in their first year of training) haul bulging water hoses toward a flaming motor vehicle, avoiding the tires, which occasionally explode from the heat. The workload, the equipment checks and the extensive, ongoing training make firefighting a full-time job. Pre-planning documentation of area businesses makes response to emergencies immediate and efficient.

The three to five firefighters per station wear many hats. Duties include emergency medical rescue; fighting fires in buildings, brush and trees; inspecting downed wires, and flooded houses and streets; changing fire detector batteries; and almost daily impromptu station tours for curious residents. Firefighters agree that their understanding spouses take the brunt of the 24-hours-on, 48-hours-off shift work. “They like a break from us, but full family responsibility can be stressful,” Lt. Gary Potter said. “Our department is one of the first considered during budget cuts, so we obviously don’t do it for the money. We love this job.” Long-term firefighters are masters of their trade. John Keppler, 27, is a fourth-generation firefighter, along with his brother and his cousins, who ride the same truck on three shifts. But related or not, risking their lives together makes them all family. Despite the lack of sleep, “We love the excitement of a call, the adrenalin rush when you run into the unknown,” Engine 92 firefighter/paramedic Robert Perez said. “We can prepare for the unexpected, but we never know what we’ll find.” Potter continued: “When we revive someone from a cardiac arrest, often our last contact is handing them off to the ambulance for hospital transport. When a spouse or relative comes by the station personally thanking us for saving a life, they bring not only appreciation, usually in the form of food, but closure in knowing the story had a good ending and that we made a difference.”

AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION

The Palm Coast Fire Department’s rating by the Insurance Service Office, or ISO, is a 2 out of 10 (with 1 being the best), making it among the top 1.3% in the nation as of 2015.

Zac Catalano, or “Zachary” if he’s in trouble, sleeps in a race car bed – his first “big boy bed.” He tosses and turns, and the bed is hard plastic. So the bruises on his lower legs didn’t alarm his parents, Lisa and Mike – at first. Then one of his grandmothers noticed the glands on his neck were swollen, and a trip to the walk-in clinic was planned after day care. Lisa Catalano, who works at the Flagler County Public Library, drove her son to the library first, and Library Director Holly Albanese also saw the bumps on Zac’s neck. “Holly felt them as well, and it was agreed we needed to get him looked at,” Lisa Catalano said. Albanese is Lisa Catalano’s boss.“I think Lisa looks up to me, more like a big sister,” Albanese said, adding that 3-year-old Zac is “all boy, and very active.” While a nurse initially dismissed the case as new parents who may have scared themselves by Googling the symptoms, the doctor immediately grasped the urgency of the situation. In a couple of hours, Lisa and Mike Catalano would be told, “Your son has cancer.”

“I think the doctor immediately knew, after looking at the bruises and feeling his glands. Because he said, ‘We need you to go to Halifax (Hospital) and have blood work done’,” Lisa Catalano said. “‘Now!’” her husband added. The doctor told the couple he would call the hospital so they wouldn’t have to wait. Zac was tested for the flu, strep throat, and had an X-ray. The Catalanos wondered why, when they

thought they were just there for blood tests, a chest x-ray was needed. “The doctor walked in close to midnight and matter-of-factly said, ‘Your son has cancer, and we need to choose which hospital to take him to now,’” Lisa Catalano said. “That’s how we found out, and it was a complete shock.” The couple chose Nemours Hospital in Orlando. The date was March 21, 2016. The couple would stay with their son at the hospital until they brought him home on April 1. On April 21 they wore orange for “Bray Day,” supporting a Bunnell Elementary kindergartner they’d been following on Facebook who was celebrating one year since he was diagnosed with leukemia. Zac goes to the hospital weekly for chemotherapy. When his counts are low, he gets blood transfusions. The couple has started giving him injections at home. “He knows something is not right with him, but basically he just says, ‘I don’t feel good,’ and that’s how we decide how he is for the day,” Mike Catalano said. “Some days he acts perfectly normal and wants to argue, and have his way. Other days he says, ‘I want to lay in bed.’” Most of the upcoming months of chemo will be out-patient for Zac. In July he will have to have a treatment that is harsher on the system. For that, he will stay for a few days. “Nemours is great,” Mike Catalano said. “They have rooms where he can change the lighting to make his room different colors, and a TV with games for him, and children’s movies.” Two of Lisa Catalano’s friends and co-workers, Jackie Brown and Shannon Ivory, have organized a golf tournament at Grand Reserve on Sunday, May 15 to help the family with medical expenses that will surpass insurance coverage for several years. As of May 6, 56 players had signed up, and Brown and Ivory are hoping for more. The couple has received support from local businesses and individuals, who, like Mike Catalano’s employer, Bright House, have sponsored holes and donated prizes. Sponsors of the event are Grand Reserve and Palm Coast Ford. Zac is now highly susceptible to infections, and is home-bound. “We would like to bring him out to the tournament, but we don’t know at this point if he is going to be able to come,” Mike Catalano said.

STILL MISSING: GEORGE CONTOS

Thieves who have stolen items from dozens of cars recently are mostly “kids going along checking vehicles to see if they’re open,” Sheriff James L. Manfre said at a City Council workshop May 10. Too often, they are. Rarely do these thieves bother breaking a window, Manfre said, so when they come across a locked car, they move on to the next possible target. “Please don’t leave your vehicle unlocked,” Manfre said. “It’s just asking for potential trouble.” So is leaving valuables in sight, he said. Recently burgled items include more than 40 firearms. Stolen guns often end up in the hands of people who couldn’t buy one legally, Manfre said. Despite the thefts, Manfre said, Flagler County is a safe community. Its 2014 crime rate of 2,073.2 crimes per 100,000 people is lower than Duval’s (4,705.7), Volusia’s (3,551.0), Putnam’s (3,538.2) or St. Johns’ (2,130.2). Part of the problem, Manfre said, is that many new residents, feeling they’re in a safe place, relax the cautions they might use elsewhere. “Just a minimum amount of effort would prevent a maximum amount of valuables stolen,” he said.

Selfless act inspires runner to return to Flagler Observer

STEPHEN COLE GUEST WRITER

Last year at the Police Athletic League’s 5K Hot Pursuit at the European Village, a runner by the name of Dave approached me and told me that he lives in the Pensacola area and that he ran the 7 Mile Bridge Run in the Keys earlier in the morning and basically drove straight to Flagler County from the Keys to run our 5K in the evening before returning home. Dave told me that he had been at our event the prior year to support a friend but did not run in it. He said he was so impressed with the event and loved our award medals that he made sure he was going to do our event last year and win a medal. Unfortunately, in 2015, the year Dave actually ran, we gave away tiles instead of medals, and he was a little disappointed. I was so impressed that this individual would basically circle our large state in a day to do our event that I looked up his address from our registrations, and I mailed him a leftover medal from the previous year with a note of encouragement with my business card. I never heard anything this year and was

unsure if Dave ever received this medal or not. Then, on April 30 of this year, Dave ran our race again. At the end, he tracked me down and shared with me how surprised he was when he had received the package from me last year. Dave told me that he had a troubled past that involved law enforcement and that his life had been going in the wrong direction. He told me that he was able to stay focused by competing in events, and, by constantly training for an upcoming event, he was able to fight his demons from the past. When Dave received my package that had a return address from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, he thought the worst. When he opened the package and saw my note and medal, he was humbled and inspired. He described this small gesture as validity that he had made it, and he now knows he has turned his life around. Dave told me that he has shared this story many times over the past year when he speaks to others that he mentors who are trying to get on the right path. The path to our April 30 event was not easy. Dave ran a 10K that morning in Pensacola and intended to run our race. But his vehicle broke down, and, in a pinch, he rented a vehicle. No matter what, he was going to make sure to run in our event and to thank me. I was humbled by my

“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

THIS MAN DESERVES A MEDAL David Farnum confirmed Cmdr. Steve Cole’s story, but added another detail or two. First of all, during the phone call with the Observer’s editor, Farnum said, “Hold on a second. There’s a turtle on the road. I gotta jump out and save him.” When Farnum got back on the phone, he said he was surprised that Cole had sent him the medal. “For somebody to do that — that’s a selfless act,” Farnum said. “I’m an out-of-towner. I don’t live here. There was not a reason for him to have done that. It was really cool of him.” He explained that after he got the medal in 2015, he didn’t want to merely write a letter back. “My only way of showing my appreciation was to drive back down and say thank you in person.” Farnum wanted to do something nice for PAL in return. Voting machines to be updated after 18 years Estimates from a few years ago put a new system around $800,000. Our cost: about $550,000.

KAITI LENHART GUEST WRITER

The biggest challenge facing your Elections Office is our current voting system. Our equipment turns 18 years old this year, making the precinctlevel tabulators old enough to vote. Florida law requires our ADA accessible equipment be upgraded by the year 2020. The Flagler County Board

of County Commissioners recently approved a new voting system at their meeting on Monday, May 2. Parts for replacement and repair are becoming harder to find, and as the system continues to age, the technology becomes less compatible. A great example is our current precinct reporting. Results come in from the precincts by fax modem. Analog phone lines are being replaced by digital lines, and many of our precincts cannot modem in results on election night. This equipment must be delivered to the Elections Office for direct upload, causing a delay in results

The new equipment will be installed next year, and we will be ready for the 2018 gubernatorial election cycle — well ahead of the state deadline

reporting. We test the phone lines prior to each election to make sure the connection can be made and the 18-year-old modems are working properly; however, they cannot transmit results on a new, digital phone line. The new equipment will transmit results by encrypted wireless modem, making results reporting nearly instant at the close of polls on election night, directly after 7 p.m. Our current voting system was never designed to last forever. Estimates from a few years ago put a new system around $800,000. With the competitive bid RFP process, our cost will be closer to $550,000. We knew it was going to be expensive, but what can be done to mitigate the cost to our county taxpayers? Federal grant funding has not been received in the Elections Office since 2010. I have been leading the effort to negotiate with the Department of State to secure federal grant funds to help 13 counties across the state of Florida, including Flagler County, to upgrade their aged voting systems. Over $147,000 is available for Flagler County at a state-level to offset the cost of this purchase. What seemed impossible two years ago is happening today. The new equipment will be installed next year, and we will be ready for the 2018 gubernatorial election cycle —

well ahead of the state deadline — with a new voting system. Is this a good time in an election year as your new supervisor of elections? I am well aware that no one Locally Owned likes spending tax dollars. As Publishers of The Palm Coast a taxpayer myself, I expect Observer our elected officials to make cost-effective and reasonable Palm Coast Observer, LLC P.O. Box 353850 decisions. To me, it would be Palm Coast, 32135 wasteful and irresponsible to wait to apply for political reasons and miss out on this important grant. The Department of State deadline is June 30. I am a public servant and a mindful steward of your tax dollars. I have returned $50,000 to the Board of County Commissioners from the inherited FY 14-15 budget and saved over $6,500 on the cost of printed ballots during the last election with Ballot On Demand technology during early voting. It is essential for the integrity of the Elections Office that the Supervisor of Elections remains completely nonpartisan to work towards what is in the best interest of voters of Flagler County. We are facing a state mandate to upgrade, and voters deserve a reliable voting system at the best price. I am proud of this important accomplishment for the voters of Flagler County. THIEF STEALS KEY FROM UNLOCKED TRUCK 6:30 p.m. 2000 block of Lancewood Ave., Bunnell. Vehicle burglary: A 56-year-old man got home from work at about 1 p.m. and left his Chevy pickup unlocked with the key on the dashboard, just like he did every day. But when he came back out to the truck at about 2:30 p.m., the key was gone, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. He searched through the truck to make sure it wasn’t inside, but couldn’t find it and called the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy couldn’t find it either, and filled out a report listing it as stolen. CAR BURGLAR STEALS SUNGLASSES, DOESN’T BOTHER WITH WALLET 8:48 p.m. 100 block of Bayside Drive. Vehicle burglary: A 22-year-old man forgot to lock his 2008 Volkswagen Passat when he got home the night of May 3 and left his wallet, in the closed position, on the passenger seat. When he got to work the next morning, he noticed that the wallet — which he’d left no cash in — was in the open position, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Nothing was missing from the wallet, but a thief had taken his $70 Rayban sunglasses from the driver’s side door pocket and about $5 in change from the glove compartment.

PURSE STOLEN IN SMASHAND-GRAB AT LOCAL GYM 6:48 p.m. First block of Patricia Drive. Vehicle break-in: A woman went to a local pool and gym facility at about 5:10 p.m., leaving her purse in her locked car under the passenger’s seat, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. When she came back to her car at about 6:25 p.m., the front passenger window was broken, and her purse — which held her wallet, some cash and her glasses — was gone. She told a deputy that part of the purse may have been sticking out from under the seat enough to be visible. No one saw anything suspicious. STOLEN OR MISPLACED? 9:23 a.m. 100 block of Surfside Drive. Residential burglary: A 92-yearold woman came home from a hospital stay and realized that her jewelry box was missing. It contained a gold wrist watch, gold chain, silver chain and five pairs of designer earrings, altogether worth about $925. The woman called the Sheriff’s Office and reported it as a theft, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. But when a deputy spoke to a property manager and maintenance personnel at her apartment complex to see if anyone had entered the home while she was gone, they said the woman had made claims of theft multiple times before, but later found the missing items. There were no signs of forced entry into the home, a deputy wrote in the report.

Sprint store ‘ransacked’ in break-in May 4 Someone smashed their way into the Sprint store on Palm Coast Parkway early the morning of May 4 and “thoroughly ransacked” it, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office report. Deputies were dispatched to the store after the store’s alarm went off at about 4:05 a.m. The store’s emergency contact arrived, and told deputies that if staff had properly followed the store’s protocol, all of the phones should be locked away in a safe. It wasn’t clear by the time a deputy wrote an initial report if anything had actually been stolen. There were surveillance cameras on the store, and a technician was still working to retrieve the video.

Man arrested after firing handgun into canal

Gregory Joseph Marr

A Palm Coast man — upset that he wasn’t able to reach his wife by phone during a shooting-related lockdown at her workplace — took a handgun behind the couple’s home and began firing it into a canal, prompting deputies to surround the home and arrest him, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office report. The gunshots the evening of May 3 prompted 911 calls, and the Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter around the house

before arresting the man, 55-year-old Gregory Joseph Marr, at about 5:13 p.m. When they arrived at the house, on the first block of Chelsea Court, deputies could hear an argument inside, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. Twice, a man — Marr, they later discovered — came outside without a gun, then went back in. They used a public address system to order him outside,

and he complied. Deputies placed him in a patrol car. His wife, Janet Marr, 56, worked at the Putnam Health Department, which went into lockdown that day after a man shot and killed a woman in the parking lot. (A suspect was arrested in connection with that shooting, according to multiple local news reports.) Marr’s husband was upset because he couldn’t reach her by phone during the lockdown, according to the case report. When she got home, Janet Marr heard gunshots behind the house, and found her husband shooting her .38 Smith and Wesson revolver in the backyard. When she asked him what he was doing, he told her he was testing the gun, and told her to take a few shots so she could take the gun to work to protect

herself in case of a shooting. She told him it was not OK to shoot a gun in the yard into the water, and he said he was just shooting at a log across the canal, according to the case report. They argued. She asked for the gun, and he gave it to her. She hid it, and he then ordered her to give it back, then pushed the table at her “in a rage” when she said no. A witness who spoke with deputies said she heard the gunshots while she was in her kitchen, and then “saw her neighbor shooting a handgun outside and waving it around randomly and spinning it between shots,”according to the case report. One witness saw Gregory Marr point the gun in his wife’s direction, and photographed it, according to a charging

affidavit. Janet Marr said he hadn’t threatened her, but was being careless with the gun because he’d had alcohol that day.

Woman reports armed robbery near Plantation Bay entrance A 58-year-old Palm Coast woman was in her stopped car near the south entrance to Plantation Bay the night of Monday, May 2, when two men came up to her car and robbed her at gunpoint, she told Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies. The total value of the items they stole was about $135, according to the report.

Candidates showcase knowledge, experience The Supervisor of Elections Forum drew about 120 people on May 4. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

The county’s three candidates for supervisor of elections addressed the public in a forum for the first time May 4, showing off their backgrounds and a detailed knowledge of the job. The event, held during a Flagler County Republican Club meeting at the Palm Coast Community Center, drew about 120 people. Questions were detailed and technical, prepared by FCRC club president Wes Priest — a precinct volunteer — in coordination with other precinct volunteers. The candidates — incumbent Kaiti Lenhart and challengers Kimble Medley and Abra Seay, all Republicans — displayed their knowledge of the elections office in their answers, often citing exact figures for things like budgets and numbers of voters. Each candidate spoke to how their background or aptitude would affect their ability to do the job. Lenhart, appointed by the governor after former elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks resigned January 2015, said she had a “record of strong leadership” in that office already, had already gotten $147,000 in federal grant money to update equipment, and had “restored civility and integrity to the office” after Weeks’ resignation. Medley, who has regularly

attended county Canvassing Board meetings and several times during the forum cited exact budget figures, said, “I have the education, I have the experience, and I have the passion to address each and every one of your needs when it comes to the election, and voting.” She pointed out two problems she saw with the way the office is currently run: One voter she knew of, she said, was turned away from the polls after showing a current military ID; and, the Elections Office website shows who’s running for mosquito control, but not Palm Coast mayor. Seay, the coordinator of the Flagler County School District’s Early Childhood Education Department and a 16-year School District employee, pointed out that she already manages a $1.2 billion government budget and supervises a staff much larger than the Elections Office’s, and that she

has endorsements from former elections supervisor Peggy Rae Border and current School District Superintendent Jacob Oliva. One question — what would candidates do about current Elections Office staff who may be loyal to former supervisor Kimberle Weeks — led to some rumbling in the audience: Weeks has been charged with 12 felony counts. Seay said she would “give them an opportunity to prove themselves and meet my expectations.” Lenhart said she already had to do some reorganization after a staff member resigned. “I love my staff; I really couldn’t do it without them. They are the most dedicated team of people I have ever worked with,” she said. Medley said she didn’t believe that workers’ former employer should be held against them. “Everybody deserves an equal and fair opportunity,” she said. “I believe in empowering employees.”

KAITI LENHART I’d love to continue, because I know that I can do this job — something I really enjoy. ... I know that I have restored civility and integrity to the Elections Office, and I’ve made many improvements to improve your voting experience in just the short time that I’ve been appointed as your supervisor of elections. I work full-time, nights and weekends to serve you, the voters of this county. ... I’ve proven my ability to provide smooth elections through a time of crisis in this county. I rebuilt the Elections Office from the ground up. And there’s progress that’s happening in your Elections Office today that may have seemed impossible a couple years ago.

KIMBLE MEDLEY Since 2009, I’ve been everywhere, growing my education and knowledge regarding elections, campaigns, budgets; networking with supervisors of elections throughout the state; conducting comprehensive research about new voter equipment; learning how best to address the needs of Flagler, and meeting with constituents. ... I’ve helped save my county, city and candidates thousands of dollars. And I’ve worked hard to establish relationships and earn the trust and endorsements of many city and county officials. ... I want to work for the voters. I love the elections

process. I love voting. I want the next generation of voters just as energetic and excited about going to vote as I am. I want to make sure our seniors have ease of access to the polling locations. And those who are working moms and dads, let’s figure out a way to make sure you can either take advantage of early voting, get to your polls on time, or take advantage of absentee or vote-by-mail.

ABRA SEAY I love my county. I was born and raised in my county. I’ve raised my children in my county. My mom still lives in our county, in the home that I was born in. I’ve been a taxpayer, a homeowner; I have worked and gone to school, college and career — all at the same time, without skipping a beat — and I have invested my time and my heart into this community. And I will continue to bring that type of leadership to the Flagler County Supervisor of Elections Office. A vote for me, Abra Seay, is a sure thing. There is no doubt that I’m here to stay, and I’m here to serve you, the taxpayers of Flagler County, like I have for the last 16 years. In 2009, I earned my master’s degree while working full-time as a teacher, owning and operating a childcare facility, helping my husband with his business, and raising five children. I will bring that work ethic and that commitment to the Supervisor of Elections Office.

In the last two seasons, he finished either first or second in the majority of those runs, and now he’s grasped the title that eluded him last year. In last year’s championship run, the second-place runner passed Pacifico with less than 10 seconds remaining in the race to steal the gold. He refused to let that happen again. “That was always in the back of my head,” he said. “I just kept telling myself to get to the line.” “It feels great putting my name in the history books with people like Justin Harbor and Sam Vazquez,” Pacifico added. “Our track team is known for our

If he wins, he will advance to the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle, Washington.

I

n the world of bull riding, fans want to see one of two things happen during the most entertaining eight seconds of sports (so I’ve been told): a rider conquer the bull, or the bull conquer the rider. This past weekend at the Brian Earl Foster Invitational, my first bull-riding show, I got to see both, and I’m hungry for more. My friends in Bunnell, the Calugars, often try to get me to ride their horses. But I always remind them of Christopher Reeve’s accidentin the 1990s, and I decline. It works for me. And, if I fear what might happen on a horse, I can only imagine sitting atop a 2,000-pound bull that is trying to do all in its power to get me off and remind me to use my brain in the future. As I was passing the bulls in the pen, a lady walked up to one of them and patted him on the back. The bull kicked the bar with such force that I thought I went to the bathroom in my pants. After collecting myself, I enjoyed every bit of the show. I loved the opening prayer, the introductions, the rodeo clown’s comedy, along with the announcer’s wit, the eightsecond wars and the intermission period, which allowed for hosts John and Danielle Copsy to honor our little local heroes, Brayden Lane, Cameron Fulling, Ryan Dudley and Essie Bass, who are battling cancer, with new cowboy hats and crowd ovations. For the majority of my life, I believed that everything I didn’t understand or wasn’t familiar with was stupid. But in these last years, I’ve sought to engage in other cultures and partake in SEE BULL RIDING PAGE 14

We were very fortunate to have amazing weather and some really fun surf.” Nearly 100 surfers headed to the beach for the event and to support Watson, their fellow surfer. The surf moms, when they took to the water to “show their children how it’s done,” offered the most excitement of the day. Colleen Conklin, along with mothers Lauren Bennett, Carla Cline, Jennifer Blumenfeld, Amy Glenn, Amy Coluccio and Marti Leavins, generated laughs from the crowd, but Conklin considers the event worth the momentary embarrassment. “Technically, I’m a much better floater then I am surfer,” Conklin joked. “However, this is one of those very special events that our circle of moms are usually willing to put ourselves out there. Haley is a very special part of our family, and I’m touched by her dedication

new adventures. I’m glad I did, and I have cowboy Brian Earl Foster to thank for leading me to bull riding. Foster, a Bunnell native, died in a car crash in 1997, and the Copsys have hosted this event for the last seven years. According to his friends, Foster left an amazing legacy; he cared for others and loved rodeo. Others have come together to honor him with this annual event, and I’ve become a fan.

Blue skies, butterflies, and free trees –

Palm Coast Arbor Day 2016 Kudos to the staff of the city of Palm Coast for requisitioning a beautiful day for their event.

Ciara and her mom, Janet Mack, selected a redbud tree to take home from Arbor Day.

ight members of the Mock family were at the starting line for the Arbor Day 5K Root Run/Walk at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 7. Four hours later, one member – 7-year-old Cassie – was still going strong, doing the Macarena while twirling a hula hoop, her race No. 872 still pinned to her shirt, and wearing a big smile. Sitting on bleachers in Town Center were her grandparents Danette and Ken Mock, watching their granddaughter’s ponytail whip in tandem with her hips, as she kept the plastic hula hoop up – the energy of youth. “She came in third in the race today,” Danette Mock said. “Eight of us ran this morning, grandparents, our son, and all of the grandchildren.” The Mocks weren’t the only ones enjoying the made-to-order day. The annual Palm Coast Arbor Day attracted all ages. Even the butterflies cooperated during the mass release at 11 a.m., with most flitting on fingers and then soaring skyward. The free family event included vendors, nonprofit groups, a train ride around the pond, demonstrations by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Canines, hands-on craft projects, and colorful kites. Keeping with the theme, “Feed a mouth, get a tree, grow a community,” three-gallon native trees were given away in exchange for a canned food or pet item. “The UF Master Gardeners are helping us,” Tom Polcek, from the city public works department, said. “We had 400 trees to give away this year.” —JACQUE ESTES

Current mentor ages are typically between 60 and 85. The AAMP is looking to recruit any help but would prefer younger males. Program leader John Winston said, “I know it’s difficult raising a family, but if you look inside your own family and see the need, someone got you to where you are. If we can get young men who will give a child some assistance for one hour a week, those kids will step up to the task and do the rest of the work by themselves.” Contact Sabrina Crosby at 437-7526 ext. 3116 or email her at crosbys@ flaglerschools. com.

The A f r i c a n -A m e r i c a n Mentoring Program highlighted four mentees and other mentors who had exemplified exceptional service this past year at its annual banquet on Thursday, May 5, at First Baptist Church of Palm Coast. “Think big. Be great. Don’t settle for good; good is the enemy of great.” These words, spoken by guest speaker Dr. Chester Wilson of Bethune Cookman, were the themes for the night, based on the direction the Top 4 seniors in the program are heading after graduation. Antion Spann picked up a summer internship with the National Security Administration in Maryland. Matthew Mills and Avery Jackson will join 48 other students from around the world to attend the Experimental Aircraft Association Advanced Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in July. And Montgomery Russell, the Dr. Jim and Laverne Guines Scholarship recipient, is on his way to a military career. “These kids are probably the most dynamic students we’ve ever had,” said John Winston, the AAMP’s CEO. “Montgomery Russell. God, if I ever wanted a child of my own … It says a lot to be selected to serve on the Flagler County School Board. To get two men from Palm Coast into a high-energy aircraft program is astronomical. And, the FBI dug up everything about Antion Spann, including his great-great grandmother, and he still rose to the top. These kids are geared by integrity.” Other seniors honored at the banquet—although some weren’t

present — included Joshua Bell, Allen Da’Varis, Nysean Giddens, Dontae Hill, Stephen Karns, Stephen McErlane, Jaleahl Kitchell and Nikolas Polite. They each received monogrammed duffle bags. All mentees received medallions. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AAMP

Bethune-Cookman Advisory Board recently honored the AAMP with its Unsung Hero Award for its tireless efforts and dedication to improving the quality of life of the citizens in the Flagler County and Daytona Beach communities. AAMP was established in 2002 by the Flagler County School Board to provide guidance and educational assistance to at-risk minority young men. A division serving young women began in 2008. More than 100 mentors work with approximately 180 students from third grade to 12th grade across the nine public schools in the district. “Thank God for God,” Winston said, “because God inspired Jim Guines to put this program together. We are all motivated by God together for the enrichment of children. That’s what he wants us to do.”

It was a ritual for the threesome, Angela in the middle of the two leashed dogs. The ritual changed when DiBella heard a thump and watched 10-year-old Max, a shih tzu, fly through the air and land in the grass. He had been hit by a speeding car. “The car was racing down the road. I never heard it,” DiBella said. “Just the thump. When I realized how close I came to being hit myself, I still can’t believe that I am still

I’ve known the DiBellas for more than 20 years. We were Friday night regulars at their restaurant, LaBella’s in Flagler

Beach. They didn’t deserve this, Max didn’t deserve this — no one deserves this. The driver may have been distracted, but to not stop and take responsibility? That is unforgiveable. DiBella saw the white vehicle speed away, no brake lights or hestitation. She has no doubt that the driver is fully aware that he hit something. By now the driver has no doubt seen news reports and knows the name of the dog he hit. DiBella’s husband, Rocky DiBella, said the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation, and have homeowners’ security suveillance videos of a white van going down the street between 8:20 and 8:27, the time of the accident. The DiBellas adopted the dog from some friends several years ago. Pampering both of their dogs included multiple walks every day. Rooster now gets all of the attention, and treats — anything to get him to eat. “He still isn’t eating right,” Angela DiBella said. “I think he feels it. When he lays down, he lays down with a sigh.” When I asked for a photo of Max I received an older photo, of a young and healthy pup — the way the DiBella’s want to remember him.

FPC Feminist Club focuses on helping others One of the newest clubs at FPC may surprise some with its membership and mission.

DONATIONS Donations can be left at the FPC reception desk through May 16. Include: Ms. Biggs, room 1-099.

JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER

The final school bell has rung. Elizabeth Townsend, Maura McCarthy, Leah Snyder, Tyler Perry, Mikhail Vassilyev and Matthew Curley are sorting black trash bags in Angela Biggs’ class at Flagler Palm Coast High School. They are members of the Feminist Club at FPC, and their last community outreach project of the year was collecting items for the Betty Griffin House in St. Augustine, an organization that provides services for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. The donation drive began April 11 and will end May 16. Maura, Leah, and Haley Craycraft, who was unable to attend this meeting, approached FPC photography and art teacher Angela Biggs last year about being a sponsor for their club. Biggs, who has sponsored other afterschool clubs, including the photography and GSA clubs, agreed. “We thought people really didn’t know what feminism was at FPC,” Maura said. “We thought we could bring awareness to it, and hopefully meet some other people who have similar views.” Not everyone who has attended meetings has agreed with the group. “One meeting, a boy came to

club who was against feminism,” Leah said. “He didn’t agree with us at the end, but at least he came, and we talked. We saw from his point of view, and he saw from ours.” The club wants to bring the topic to the attention of fellow students. “Whether people are coming to the meetings or not, people see the posters around school,” Elizabeth said. “Even if they don’t agree with it, they have to face it. There’s a lot of people that don’t agree with the club, but that opens up the room for discussion, which is what I think is the point.” The group meets the first and third Tuesday of the month in room 1-099 to watch a video or discuss specific topics. This school

year’s final meeting will be May 17. “Some of our topics this year have included sexual assault awareness, and women in the Middle East and what they face,” Maura said. “The last meeting was on consent.” “We have also had one on the history of feminism and Guerrilla Girls,” Leah said. “Guerrilla Girls have done a lot of work for female artists.” Helping sort the donations for the Betty Griffin House are three boys: Mikhail, Tyler and Matthew. “I think there’s a really big misconception around school,” Mikhail said. “People think that feminism is about hating men, when really it’s about helping people. I figured if I attended meet-

ings, it would lessen the stigma a little bit for other guys that may be seeing it in an uninformed way.” “You don’t have to understand it, but just respect other people’s point of view,” Tyler said. To get the word out about the club and events like the donation drive, the group posts fliers and includes meeting topics on the morning announcements. They also have a Twitter account: FPCFeminists. Elizabeth will be graduating this year, but will continue to be involved in a feminist club. “I already contacted my school, the University of Florida, to verify that they have a feminist club,” she said. “They do, and they have 75 members.”

YOUR MARKETPLACE

Now open: St. Joe’s Bakery and Catering St. Joe’s Bakery and Catering is one of Palm Coast’s newest eateries. The bakery is co-owned by Rebecca Carr, Kevin Geremia, and Stephanie and Steve Small. The dining area was recently painted, and visitors may be greeted by the smell of fresh baked bread upon entering. The bakery offers a variety of desserts, breads and pastries. Bagels may soon be added to the menu, but before that happens, Geremia will visit New Jersey to work on his bagel technique. The bakery also offers full-meal catering. The owners are dedicated to the concept of having everything made from scratch every day. The freezer is used exclusively for storing empty boxes to send home the sweet treats with customers, they said. St. Joe’s Bakery is still learning which baked goods its customers are stopping in for, and so its menu has changed every day. Still, no one left empty-handed during the time a reporter was there. “‘Fresh baked’ is not ‘fresh made,’” Geremia said. “I want customers to learn what fresh food tastes like again. People have forgotten what fresh is.” The bakery is located at 230 St. Joe Plaza Drive.
