had sought the community’s help to return the missing dog to her family. “She is missing and frightened after being ejected from her owner’s car Friday night at 6:30 after a wreck at the southbound ramp of I-95 at Palm Coast Parkway,” a Sheriff’s Office news release stated. “Help us help this family!” Ice’s owner, 37-year-old Palm Coast P-Section resident Jaywana Walker, was injured in the crash along with Walker’s 13-year-old daughter, but both were released from the hospital the night of the crash. Ice is a white and gray/brindlecolored pit bull just under 2 years old, and wears a pink collar. “She’s just this lovable puppy,” Walker said. “She’s such a good dog.” After the crash, Ice ran past the Lowe’s Home Improvement store and the Golden Corral on Cypress Edge Drive, then back toward the crash site. Walker, who works in environmental services at Florida Hospital Flagler, said the crash happened when she had an epileptic seizure and blacked out behind the wheel. She’d recently had medical tests that showed she was safe to drive, she said, and will need more testing to find out what happened. The car left the road and struck two trees, emergency workers later told her.

Missing dog Ice is home safe. A woman named Jill Scott, owner Jaywana Walker said, found Ice near the Winn-Dixie parking lot late the night of May 21. The 2-year-old pit bull had been missing ever since she was thrown from Walker’s car during a crash at the Interstate-95 Palm Coast Parkway ramp the evening of May 20. Scott “was nice enough to stand there with a flashlight on her until we got there” to pick the pooch up, Walker said. “She was our guardian angel,” Walker said of Scott. “I can’t thank her enough.” Ice’s nose has some abrasions, but she’s otherwise fine, Walker said. The dog recognized the family’s car and hopped right in when Walker’s fiancé and elder daughter pulled up to get her, Walker said. The family was bathing the pup while Walker spoke with a reporter. Ice was thrown from her owner’s car during a car wreck the evening of Friday, May 20, and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office

magine School at Town Center fourth-grade teacher Colleen Fonte wasn’t suspicious when, the night before the school Fun Run Day, she was asked to dress up because a reporter was going to interview her. She wasn’t suspicious when she was told there was an FSA pep rally, or even when, as Regional Teacher of the Year, she was asked up onto the stage. “Then it hit me what was really happening,” Fonte said. “I looked out and saw the CEO of Imagine (Schools) waking down the path, and my father, my parents..., my husband was hiding — that’s when I realized, it’s not for Regional Teacher of the Year,
and they announced I had won National Teacher of the Year.” Fonte said she was happy they suggested she dress up that day. “If I had accepted the National Teacher of the Year in T-shirt and shorts I would not have been happy,” she laughed. Fonte began teaching at Imagine School at Town Center five years ago. Principal James Menard was a third-grade teacher at the time, and on the hiring committee. “We were together on the thirdgrade team,” Menard said. “She is so dynamic and so passionate with her students. She will do anything to help her students succeed, and that’s ultimately what makes a good teacher.” Fonte said she was awestruck that she had been selected from
all of the Imagine Schools nationwide. “There are 67 Imagine Schools in the nation, and it’s quite an honor to be recognized as top teacher,” Menard said. Along with teaching 22 fourthgraders, Fonte serves as a team lead, the education director for the Intermediate Academy, and sponsors the Builders Club associated with the Kiwanis. Her summer break will include some time with her family on vacation, but she also expects to work one or two days a week, preparing for the next school year. “I think it’s a misconception that teachers don’t work holidays, breaks and over the summer,” Fonte said. “That is so far from true.”
ANOTHER NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR Brett Cunningham was a fifth-grade teacher at Imagine School at Town Center in 2013 when he was named the Imagine 2013 National Teacher of the Year. Cunningham is no longer at Imagine School at Town Center. He now lives in Portland, Oregon.
IMAGINE STUDENTS SHINE AT FORMAL DANCE The Imagine School at Town Center’s Café was transformed into a “ballroom” for the end of the year formal, “Shine Like a Diamond.” The turquoise and bling color scheme was seen throughout the event space, from the ceiling all the way down to the bling box favors. The seventh- and eighth-grade students who attended were treated to a dinner of lasagna and spinach-stuffed chicken, catered by Hot Spot Cuisine. Festivities also included Elena Tevenal and Cayo Dias being presented as the eighth-grade Queen and King. Allison Tuggle and Kaiden Rider were crowned the seventh-grade Princess and Prince. The students were dressed to impress, and danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Vlagga.
Candidates and audience members were a bit squeezed at the first major political forum of the season May 19, as about 110 audience members packed the chairs, and then lined the rear wall, in a room at the Hilton Garden Inn to hear a total of 16 candidates for three local government boards speak. The forum was the first held by the United Public Employees of Flagler, a group representing major public employee collective bargaining units within the county. Candidates — for the School Board, City Council, and County Commission — answered a series of questions formulated by the group and asked by moderator Patrick Juliano, a former firefighter and a current regional manager for Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater. All of the candidates for the County Commission, City Council and School Board seats were invited to attend, Juliano said. The 16 who did were kept to minute-and-a-half time limits. Some questions were asked only of candidates running for particular boards, with education questions asked of the School Board candidates, and city and county-related questions asked of City Council and County Commission candidates. Several times, City Council and County Commission candidates spoke of tensions between city of Palm Coast and the Flagler County government. Incumbent County Commission District 1 candidate Charlie Ericksen mentioned it at the beginning of the forum while answering a question about what issues would be on his priority list, saying, “I’d like to see the working relationship between the city manager and the county administrator improve.” School Board District 3 incumbent Colleen Conklin earned audience applause after she said she’d “make sure that the policies that are being pushed down at our level, that ... we have he ability to say no, we’re not going do certain things,” and School Board District 5 candidate Myra MiddletonValentine was the sole candidate to mention student achievement when asked about the role of the School Board and superintendent. Each of the 16 candidates, answering a question near the end of the forum, expressed their support for unions.

Palm Coast’s ‘very generous’ people fill food pantry Annual NALC food drive fills the pantry shelves in Flagler County. JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR
MAY SAT.
Bette Rountree is not “Old Mother Hubbard,” but her cupboards were bare at the Flagler County Resource Center food pantry on Friday, May 13. But what a difference a day makes: By 7:30 Saturday night, Rountree — president of Church Women United — and 35 volunteers were locking the doors of a fully stocked food pantry after a very successful food drive by the National Association of Letter Carriers. On Saturday, letter carriers across the country were picking up more than mail. They were picking up donations of nonperishable food to be donated to the food banks within the community. The different pantries were assigned to each postal district in the county, and while there was some initial distribution confusion at the Palm Coast post office, Rountree and her team waited it out. “We waited outside the post office for the trucks to come in,” Rountree said. “We were there with people from Lifecoast Church, Mount Calvary Baptist,

and Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic food pantries.” Rountree and her group decided they were there for the long haul and would wait until the last truck came in from deliveries, after 7 p.m. She had nine vehicles making trips from the post office to the food pantry in Bunnell. She quickly lost count of how many trips they made during the day. “The carriers park in a lot in the back, and when it was 99% full, that’s when we left,” Rountree said. “I was determined that no donation would go to waste. There were 35 volunteers working at the food pantry in Bunnell unloading cars and putting food away.” The mail routes took longer, as drivers returned to the post office during the day to drop off the food donations. “The people in Palm Coast are very generous and the postal workers are great,” Rountree said. “It’s more work for them, but they know it goes to a good cause.” Church Women United has been operating the Flagler Resource Center (under a variety of names) for the past 34 years. The number of people being served is not decreasing, but Rountree said she has seen a change in demographics. “We are averaging 225-250 families each month during the eight hours a week we are open,”

Rountree said. “We are seeing more seniors and fewer families with young children. We still see the younger children, but many are families with adult children living with them, and older people on a fixed income.” Rountree didn’t know how many pounds of food she was able to stock her pantry with, but she said, with continuing donations, it should keep the shelves stocked into July. “I weigh our distribution not by pounds, but by the people we are serving,” Rountree said.

John and Chrissie Birney were introduced to one another by a friend almost three years ago. A year ago, John popped that special question to Chrissie at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. She happily accepted. The Birneys started to plan Chrissie’s dream fall wedding with a guest count of 120 people. After learning the cost of having a large wedding, however, the stress quickly became real. They also met with a mortgage broker, who explained the cost of getting into their first home. How could they afford both a wedding and a place to live? Someone suggested as a joke that they should elope. But the joke soon became a serious con-

versation. They certainly weren’t John and Christrying to hide their marriage from sie Birney anyone, but if they were to elope, they could get married sooner and put the money they would have spent on a wedding toward a down payment on a home. They decided to go one step further and ask their friends and family to contribute to their down payment instead of buying wedding presents. On May 14, John and Chrissie were married in a small ceremony in Atlanta with some of their closest friends and family — not 120 guests. The couple enjoyed the weekend doing something they love most: going to a music festival. To them, it was their honeymoon. During the ride home on May 16, just a few days before closing on the home, John reflected on the decision to “elope”: “This was a really good move. We did something really special here.”
TO BONNAROO OR NOT TO BONNAROO?
This summer, the Birneys have plans to return to Bonnaroo, which is where John proposed to Chrissie. It will be John’s ninth year in a row to attend the music festival.

Begging at Publix, for a cause Future Problem Solvers have lots of friends as they prepare for international competition.

hen I finish with my work at the office for the day, I usually don’t like to stand in the sun in front of Publix and beg people for money. But I was fortunate enough to help my son do just that on May 19, as we attempted to raise funds for the Future Problem Solvers’ trip to the international competition, which is hosted at Michigan State University this year. There was a good variety of responses. Some were so kind it might have brought a tear to my eye if I weren’t so concerned with getting heat stroke. One man stood and listened to the boys talk while his ice cream melted in his grocery bags. The humanity! “I can support you,” one woman said, “but I want you to give your spiel.” Jackson, my 12-year-old

It’s a 2001 Nissan Altima with “all the bells and whistles,” according to Dennie. The price is estimated at more than $3,000, but the car will be raffled off for $5 per ticket. To participate, come to Zaxby’s (on Cypress Edge Drive, between Walmart and Lowe’s) from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 27.

This woman nodded and listened intently before giving a $5 bill. Another man listened
Branch patrons? Having read about the wonderful renovation the students did at the high school library, why not enlist their ideas? Once again, we have a process that excludes the community, and spends taxpayers’ staff time and resources on a proposed $4.5 million liability (after deducting the $1 million passport funds that could be spent on the Bunnell Branch library as suggested above) that does not include funding for books or staff. to the spiel on the way in, then brought back a $20 bill on the way out. Most of the shoppers at Publix weren’t interested. Some made sure we knew it. “When I win the lottery, I’ll help,” one man said as he walked by. Others put their heads down and did their best impressions of Olympic speed walkers as they brushed past us. “You want a donation or what?” another man said. Jackson said yes, he did want
a donation. “Why didn’t you say so?” the man said, with a frown. But, he gave him a dollar. Another man had money in his hand, and when the boys started explaining their projects, he said, “I don’t care what it’s for, just take it.” In total, Jackson and Paul raised about $260 in just two hours, while refining their skills of talking to strangers, dealing with rejection, and, most importantly, begging.

there to make a lot of money. Yes, they are losing players, but there are a few thousand young people in our schools and I am sure they can be enticed to use these courses to learn. When my husband and I moved to Palm Coast we rented for a year and then built our home on Zaun Trail as we liked country atmosphere. But after his death in 1995 I moved to this area and have enjoyed every minute of living here. To those men who meet for their “Workshops,” please listen to this wise man and seek some answers.
Dear Editor: Let me start by saying I do not know Brian Barrington nor have I ever heard of him. But his letter to the editor regarding the Palm Harbor Golf Course caused me to give him a loud round of applause while sitting here in my living room reading his letter. I agree wholeheartedly with his opinions. This golf course started as an amenity to the new community along with the tennis course way back in 1972. I see no reason why this city has not been able to continue to keep it going. I also agree that most municipal courses are not

If there was a discussion of the need for better library services in Bunnell, why didn’t someone suggest having fulltime, six-day week hours at the Bunnell Branch instead of Monday, Wednesday, Friday? TIRES SLASHED IN TWO SEPARATE PARTS OF TOWN 300 block of Parkview Drive. Criminal mischief: People staying in two separate parts of town woke up the morning of May 22 and found their car tires slashed. In the first case, a Palatka woman and a Hastings man who were staying at a home on Parkview Drive went ouside at about 7 a.m. and saw that the tires on their Nissan Altima and Chevy Impala had been slashed. Several hours later and about three miles away, on Ramblewood Drive, a 68-year-old Palm Coast man walked outside at about 10 a.m. and saw that both rear tires on his Chrysler Town and Country van had been slashed. Each rear tire had about a 2-inch gash in the sidewall.

Sheriff James Manfre swears in new Detention Deputy Danielle Basciano Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre swore in new Detention Deputy Danielle Basciano May 11, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release. Basciano, 22, previously worked at the Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach for four months after attending Daytona State College’s corrections basic recruit academy and Salem International University, in Salem, West Virginia. Basciano has always wanted to be a law enforcement officer, and, as a college student, was inspired by an instructor who had worked as a detention deputy. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. “I have a lot of friends who are cops,” Basciano said in the news release. “I like the controlled environment of a prison. This is a department where I can see myself finishing my career.’’

She called the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies came to the restaurant and didn’t find anyone inside. They called the owner, who came to the restaurant and said the only thing missing was a change tray from a cash register. It had contained only about $20 or $30 in change, he told the deputies. The bigger loss to the business was the broken front door, worth about $350. Surveillance video showed the thief smash it in with a baseball bat.

The restored stables at Princess Place
Flagler County has won a Florida Trust for Historic Preservation award for the restoration of the stables at the Princess Place Preserve. The award was presented at the 37th-annual awards ceremony held May 13 in Tallahassee, according to a Flagler County government news release. All five county commissioners — George Hanns, Charlie Ericksen, Nate McLaughlin, Frank Meeker and Chair Barbara Revels — attended. “It was such an honor for Flagler County to be recognized for its efforts with this award,” Commissioner George Hanns said. “We certainly want to thank the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation board for its recognition of one of our valued assets.” The restoration cost $447,558, with grants from the Florida Bureau of Historic Preservation and the Tourist Development Council covering $333,400. The rest was paid with money from the county’s optional half-cent sales tax.
Flagler County Republican Party opens 2016 headquarters The Flagler County Republican Executive Committee opened its 2016 Republican Victory Headquarters May 23 at 55 Plaza Drive, Unit D6 . “We are very excited to be opening our Victory Headquarters in Flagler County,” Flagler County Republican Executive Committee Chairwoman Anne-Marie Shaffer said in a press release. “2016 has already seen a tremendous amount of interest in the presidential race; the phones are still ringing two months after the Florida primary. ... Our Victory Headquarters is going to be busier than ever.” A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. May 27. The public is invited. For more information, please contact Shaffer at FCREC@ gmail.com or 569-8400.
Democratic Executive Committee moves to new location The Democratic Executive Committee Headquarters has moved to 2 Office Park Drive, Suite C. The new location is about one tenth of a mile west of the intersection of Clubhouse Drive and Palm Coast Parkway NE, across Palm Coast Parkway NE from the Palm Coast Community Center.
Commissioners’ travel budgets may be tripled
Ambulance may be relocated There might soon be one fewer ambulance at the fire station next to the Community Center on Palm Coast Parkway — at least, temporarily — and it isn’t yet clear where the ambulance will go. The 1977-built Station 22 is slated for $100,000 in renovations, and city staff want the two Flagler County Emergency Services staff members and their ambulance moved to Station 24, on Palm Harbor Parkway about 2.5 miles away. “That’s going to leave a void in that area, is it not?” County Commissioner George Hanns asked in a County Commission budget workshop May 19. “We’re working on it. We’re aware of that,” County Administrator Craig Coffey replied. County staff will meet with city staff June 7 to determine placement of the ambulance and its crew, he said. “We probably won’t be inclined to move it up to Station 24, but we’ve got some other solutions that will work for us.” One of the possibilities, he said, would be a mobile center that could house the crew temporarily. There are strategic reasons for keeping the ambulance and crew in the area of Station 22, Coffey said after the meeting.
Flagler County may almost triple the amount of money it spends on county commissioners’ travel. This fiscal year, the county budgeted $15,850. This coming fiscal year, the amount considered is $45,000, or $9,000 per commissioner in addition to commissioners’ state-determined salaries of about $51,000 per year. Commissioner Barbara Revels said at a workshop May 19 that she could see bumping the budget up to $30,000, but not up by $30,000. “I’m suggesting that adding $30,000 is obscene for what we’re already compensated for our job,” she said. Commissioners Nate McLaughlin and Frank Meeker disagreed. “There’s a direct benefit to the citizens of Flagler County,” McLaughlin said of county commissioners’ travel. “That’s where we go and build these relationships, and get these grants and get these dollars.” County Administrator Craig Coffey said commissioners have been exceeding their budgets in recent years, averaging $6,500 in travel per commissioner, or $32,500 total. McLaughlin said commissioners wouldn’t necessarily use all of what was budgeted. Coffey suggested placing a total of $35,000 in the budget, or $7,000 per commissioner that could be shifted from one commissioner to the next.
MORE PROTECTION FOR POLITICIANS? After a man railed aggressively, and at times unintelligibly, at local politicians at two recent county government meetings, officials are talking about making the Government Services Building safer. “I’d like to get some consideration to making a better effort to protect the five of us when we’re up on the dais here,” Commissioner Charlie Ericksen said at a budget workshop May 19. He noted that the man “comes in with a large backpack. ... I hope security is looking in large containers like that.” The man with the backpack has been trespassed from the facility. County government meetings are attended by deputies who have the power to remove people whose behavior is threatening, but they don’t check bags. Ericksen said he’d like to see the front of the dais in the commission chambers hardened. County Administrator Craig Coffey said Ericksen had raised “some valid points.” For now, Coffey said, “We’ll talk to the Sheriff’s Office if we have some concerns. Number one would be additional deputies to search the bags.” Coffey said the county could also budget money to explore hardening and other safety improvements.

An 8-year-old Hammock girl was playing outside when a 60-yearold neighbor motioned to get her attention, and then exposed his genitals to her, the girl told her parents, and, later, a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The man, Shady Lane resident Mark Steven Hall, has been charged with lewd and lascivious exhibition to a child under the age of 16. He is deaf, and was unable to answer deputies’ questions, according to a deputy’s report. The incident happened at about 1:08 p.m. May 14. A neighbor who knew some American Sign Language used it to ask Hall, at deputies’ request, what he’d been doing for the last hour. Hall responded that he’d been sitting on his porch and that he walked around the yard briefly near his pump house. A deputy asked the neighbor to ask Hall if Hall had urinated in the yard. Hall replied that he had not. The neighbor told the deputy “that the only thing he was able to get from (Hall) was that there was someone over the house four hours earlier named ‘Ed’ and he urinated in the front yard.”
Deputies agreed that probable cause existed to arrest Hall. The neighbor who knew American Sign Language explained to Hall why he was being arrested.

Flagler Beach won’t renew Montessori school’s lease The city revisited the school’s lease to add guidelines about its garden at Wickline Park. But commissioners think the school pays too little for the city-owned property.
Cornelia’s Commercial Corner
Last month, Flagler Beach city commissioners said the Flagler Beach Montessori school could keep its garden at Wickline Park. But now commissioners aren’t sure they want the school there at all — at least, not without a rent increase for the city-owned property. The commission voted unanimously May 19 not to renew the school’s current lease, and to instead draft a new one. Some of the numbers mentioned for a possible rent increase were far above what school owner Kerri Huckabee told commissioners she could pay. The issue started with the school’s garden: It had drawn complaints from people saying it was overgrown. Commissioners wanted to look at the lease to establish guidelines for it. But in doing so, the city found other issues, and commissioners decided to reconsider the monthly rent, which has been just $1,307.76 a month, or $1,399.31 including tax. The school building itself is about 5,400 square feet, at 800 S. Daytona Ave. “We are subsidizing this school,” City Commissioner Kim Carney said at a special City
Commission meeting about the school May 19. “Whether we want to admit it or not, we are in the elementary school business.” Carney thought the city shouldn’t be, and worried about modifications made to the school building — without permits — some of which violated state safety codes. “Look at an administrator of a building who puts a curtain over the fire exit, and locks the door,” she said. “So they have no regard for fire safety.” Mayor Linda Provencher disagreed with Carney’s characterization of the city as “subsidizing” the Montessori school. “I don’t think you’re subsidizing anyone,” she said. Bringing the building up to market rent would leave the school paying rent of about $2,400, Commissioner Marshall Shupe said. Charging standard commercial building rates would mean rent payments of about $3,200 a month. But Provencher said the restaurant building at the pier started with payments of about $3,000 per month, and it’s a profitable commercial property in much better shape than the worn school building. School owner Kerri Huckabee told the commissioners she couldn’t afford to pay more than
a couple hundred dollars extra per month. But Carney said $1,300 was just too low. “I’m not in favor of $1,300 a month,” she said. “I would rather let it sit, and not have any damage, not have any construction problems.” If the school can’t afford to pay a reasonable rental rate that is more than $200 or so more than the school pays now, “that’s not my problem,” she said. Provencher supported a rent increase. But, she said, “I’m not going to charge $3,200 for anybody for that building, because it is an old building, it does need a lot of work. ... $3,200 a month is a lot of money for that building, especially when it needs a new roof.” Commissioner Jane Mealy suggested a gradual rent increase over several years. She was also unhappy with changes the school made to the building — including the addition of extra bathroooms and the installation of a door lock that had been deemed a fire code violation — without permission from the city. The school, according to its current lease, is required to fix those changes before leaving, something the city’s building

inspector said was estimated to cost about $7,500. But, commissioners said, the lease also requires the school to seek the city’s permission before making changes to the building, and that hadn’t happened. “I feel — and I’m sorry, Kerri, for this — I feel like we were taken advangtage of,” Mealy said. “The building was offered the way it was, an agreement was made with the way the building was, and a whole lot of changes occurred that we knew nothing about. ... It is a local historic building. We have very few left. And I don’t like the changes that were made to the building that make it even less historic than it was.” Huckabee, addressing the board, thanked commissioners for giving the school the opportunity to use the property. But, she said, the building had major problems, and the changes the school made improved it. “I walked in there nine years ago, and the place was disgusting,” she said. “I beautified that

place. ... I understand I didn’t do the permitting. But I’ve beautified that building inside.” Commissioner Marshall Shupe, speaking after Huckabee left to attend to a family emergency, suggested that the fact that Huckabee had mentioned a couple hundred dollars as the maximum she could afford to pay in a rent increase “doesn’t mean we have to go with her max.” Commissioner Rick Belheumer said he agreed with Huckabee about the initial condition of the building. And, he said later, “It isn’t going to do anybody, the kids or the city, any good sitting there empty.” He suggested raising the rent 20%, to about $1,680 including taxes. Carney suggested the city also request a security deposit in a future lease. The commission didn’t settle on how much rent the city will seek in the future, but voted unanimously not to renew the school’s current lease and to instead formulate a new one.

SPORTS Surprise?

F
lagler Palm Coast and Seabreeze played anything but an exciting, championship-caliber game on Tuesday, May 24, at FPC for their spring contest. But that’s why they play this exhibition. The Bulldogs won 13-0 in a game of constant turnovers and penalties. FPC’s Keith Boswell recovered the first Sandcrabs’ fumble. After Paul Nelson sacked Brevin Glaze from the blind side, Boswell picked up another fumble. Isaac Mott, then, intercepted a Darrell Thomas pass to return the ball to Seabreeze. And then FPC’s Kevin Pogue stripped a Sandcrab for a third Seabreeze fumble lost in the first quarter. Just before halftime, Sandcrabs’ Jalen Miranda picked off a second Thomas pass, but the Sandcrabs were unable to capitalize on any opportunities. FPC’s Que’Shaun Byrd scored the only two touchdowns of the game, on a two-yard run in the second quarter, and a 36-yard run in the third. The extra point attempt for the last score was missed. Both teams will rest a couple of weeks but will return to the practice field for the summer offseason.

DOUBLE TAKE! No. 14 for the Bulldogs is not former starting quarterback Dalton Thomas. He is, however, his younger brother, Darrell (pictured left). Their games are identical; Darrell, too, plays QB and punts for the Dawgs, just as Dalton did for almost four years.
I’m not a hopeless romantic, but I make attempts to surprise my wife, Jessica, every now and then. Because our families live only two hours away from each other, we usually celebrate holidays apart. Well, this past Christmas Eve, I thought I surprised her, when she opened her parents’ door at 10 p.m., only to find out that my sister, Taquila, had called her hours earlier and told her I was coming. My sister has proven that she can’t keep a secret; she even told me once about my surprise birthday party. I thought of her last week, when Matanzas lacrosse player Bailee Hurd invited me to Jillian Bontempo’s surprise college signing. According to Bailee, Jill doesn’t like that kind of attention, so she would’ve never held a signing for herself. But, Bailee, being her best friend—and the reason she decided to commit to St. Leo with her—wanted to do something special for Jill. Bailee actually filled out the college application for Jill. So she alerted the Lady Pirates and Jill’s family members of her plans to surprise Jill and congratulate her on her signing, but Bailee, too excited not to tell her best friend, who just so happens to be the “surprisee,” let the cat of the bag a few days too early. “I couldn’t keep it in,” Bailee laughed. “She was getting suspicious, so I had to tell her.” With everyone in position, in front of the Pirates’ trophy case in the gym, Bailee slowly led Jill into the room, and the supporters yelled, “Congratulations!” Jill simply waved with a big smile on her face—because she wasn’t surprised at all. “I tried to look surprised, but it just didn’t come out,” Jill laughed. “I was too happy.” Upon knowing the surprise, I told Bailee that I wanted to “surprise” all of the supporters and inform them that they didn’t really surprise Jill, through this column, so I needed her to actually keep this a secret. Bailee replied, “OK. I will not ruin another surprise.” Although Bailee, and my sister, are no good at keeping surprises a secret, she seems to make up for it by being a good friend. That was a life moment Jill will never forget.

Ann Lauter, one of the teachers that Matthew Mills mentioned in his speech, congratulates him.
First Baptist Christian Academy peers Marcos Izquierdo, Sydney Karcher (front) and Brianna Hilditch show their excitement for the school’s first graduates.
NEXT STOP ON THE JOURNEY? Matthew Mills will spend the summer at the Experimental Aircraft Association Advanced Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and will then attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Robin Scott plans to attend Daytona State with hopes of becoming a teacher. FBCA Principal Holly Nies assured her that an academy job would be open for her, when she graduates.
A
ngry at the world because his mother, Sonia Jimenez, transferred him from a school of over 1,500 kids to First Baptist Christian Academy, which only had 15 high schoolers in one hybrid-learning classroom, Matthew Mills attempted almost anything to irritate his teachers. Not willing to give up on him, the FBCA staff didn’t hold back tears, as he thanked them for their patience and mercy in his speech at the school’s inaugural high school graduation. Before taking their honorary seats on stage, in front of dozens of family members and guests, Mills and fellow senior, Robin Scott, strolled the academy’s halls for a last time, to the cheers and applauses of the school’s 400plus students and faculty staff at the old Bunnell courthouse. “When we began the high school last year, we knew it wasn’t ideal,” said Kevin Lautar, FBCA’s former director. “But, because of God’s faithfulness and providence, we were able to provide for them an excellent envi-
ronment this year that exceeded all we could ask or dream.” Both Mills and Scott joined the school as juniors, when the academy was still connected with the church. On being a pioneer graduate, Scott said, “I knew I was going to be one of the first, but it’s still surprising, and it feels great.” Scott is well-known for her happy-go-lucky, free-spirit character that lights any room she enters. “I never thought I'd be the first to do anything at FBCA, except get into trouble,” Mills added, “but it's definitely an honor. Since we are the first, I guess the people will always remember us.” FBCA became an accredited school in March, so both graduates—and all future high school grads—leave with an accredited education. “These first two graduates are an answer to prayer and the result of hard work and blood, sweat and tears by a lot of people,” Lautar said. “The academy’s been open for eight years, so this was a dream for eight years that this would one day happen, and here we are.”

The Flagler Beach Winery has believed in its excellent wines and food pairings with an ocean view for the past four years. Ken Tarsitano, the owner, had that belief validated recently, winning
two double-gold medals for their merlot and allure wines and two silver medals for their syrah and petite verdot by the Florida International Wine Competition. “We don’t have to be in California to make good wines,” Tarsitano said. The winery submitted to the competition in February and learned of its winnings via mail in April. “The proof is in the pudding,” said Tarsitano, referring to his wine making and the outcome from the competition. A panel of judges selected the Flagler Beach Winery’s entries from over 1,000 wines. Tarsitano hopes this will put Florida on the map for wine production. Tarsitano couldn’t be more pleased. He said, “I get to make wine, look at the ocean and sell it to people.”

Animal hoarders: the illness and the crime IF YOU KNOW OF A HOARDER Within the city of Palm Coast - 986- 2520 Within unincorporated Flagler County, Flagler Beach, Bunnell, Beverly Beach 246-8612
JACQUE ESTES COMMUNITY EDITOR
Turning in an animal hoarder may be the hardest thing you do — but you will be saving lives.
T
here was a time, when the kids were home, we had two dogs, two cats and a couple of birds. When we evacuated for Hurricane Floyd it took all three of our vehicles to transport them. Today, my husband and I have one cat, two dogs and one bird, and at this time in our lives, with our schedules — that is enough. When I began writing a pet column in the mid-1990s, it required a weekly visit to the humane society. This made my husband nervous, because we both are “animal people.” On two occasions, he returned home and said; “This (dog/cat) wasn’t here when I left this morning.” This was in reaction to Luna, a golden retriever/ chow mix, and Samantha, our current feline in residence. I knew I couldn’t save them all — but I would do my part.
I confess this because I know how easy it is to fall in love during every visit. I always believed that hoarders were folks with good intentions, who became overwhelmed. Hoarders are now being recognized as individuals with mental health issues that can result in horrific consequences for the animals and their own families. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are a quarter of a million animals who become victims to hoarders every year. Statistics show that hoarders are generally female, over 60 and live alone. They have an unusual number of “pets” without the financial means to house or care for them, and they deny this inability. The process is gradual, starting with a pet or two, but then the numbers increase. Sometimes people bring animals to them, or they start picking up strays — to protect them — and soon there are too many to manage. The person will go without necessities for herself, and may even become reclusive, to try and provide for

the animals. But animals are expensive to properly care for. There is help for people who suffer from pet hoarding, but the first step is intervention. Pet hoarders will deny they have a problem. Many friends and family members worry about getting their friends and loved ones into legal trouble, but it is important to remember that the situation is inhumane for all involved and must be resolved. Hoarding cases do not have to end with criminal prosecution of the hoarder. It is important is to get the animals out, to eliminate the possibility of the hoarder obtaining new animals and to get long term help for the person suffering with the mental illness.

Dr. Gary Patronek, founder of the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium, says most pet hoarders fall into one of three categories: Overwhelmed caregivers: They begin rescuing or helping animals in a small way and/or acquire pets passively but become overwhelmed by their growing pet population and inability to say no. People in this category tend to be the most willing to consider downsizing when offered help. Rescuer hoarders: The people in this group are driven by an extreme sense of mission. Patronek says a profound fear of death and/or loss drives them. Caring for animals provides a strong sense of identity; losing the animals is a loss of who they are. When Animal Services finds this type of hoarder, the first options are offering help and negotiated settlements. If the hoarder cannot or will not improve conditions for the animal, sometimes confiscation and prosecution become necessary. Exploiter hoarders: These people may be true sociopaths. Exploiter hoarders lack empathy for people or animals. They are manipulative, cunning and can be vicious. Prosecuting them with every legal option is often the only path to saving the animals and a successful intervention.

MEET THE DANCE TEAM
Dance team Alexander and Magdalena Ivanov want to improve your life through dance.
What began as a dream to “touch a real palm tree” for a little Polish girl has now blossomed into a lifelong career and lifestyle for world-renowned dancer Magdalena Ivanov. While she has put aside her competitive dance shoes, Ivanov wants Palm Coasters to pick theirs up for lessons, fun and opportunities she has enjoyed in dance. She, along with Alexander Ivanov, have opened Arthur Murray Dance Studio, one of 260 worldwide, at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite A214. While instructing in New York and Jacksonville, the Ivanovs felt they were only one among many dance studios. After doing their research around the area, they believed they could make an impact in Palm Coast. “We wanted to move to a place where we could add value,” Magdalena Ivanov said. “Palm Coast seems to be family-oriented, and it’s small like the town I grew up in, in Poland.” With their new dance studio, the Ivanovs hold classes for couples, singles and social dance parties in various ballroom dancing areas. “For couples, this could reunite them again, bringing
Kim Lindsay
Alexander and Magdalena Ivanov
their romance back,” she said. “Usually couples don’t hold each other for 45 minutes during the week; this is the place they will.” Just as dancing has allowed the Ivanovs to tour Europe and other parts of the word, gain social and personal skills and move to America, the Ivanovs believe dance can and will change lives here in Flagler County. The studio will host a grand opening at 4 p.m. May 26, at the studio. Call 225-4660.
For nearly 25 years, Alexander Ivanov has been competing, performing and teaching as a professional Latin and ballroom dancer. His primary focus throughout his career has been training his students, who have gone on to win numerous titles. Alexander has competed in over 200 NDCA sanctioned competitions, winning “Top Honors” and numerous first-place “Top Teacher” awards. Magdalena Ivanov began her dancing journey at the age of 7 in Poland, where she discovered her passion for ballroom. Since then, she has won many national ballroom titles and has placed fourth in the world in American Smooth. In the teaching field, her students have also won titles.

Hope to Help Foundation raised money through Dance to Hope.
When dealing with something as serious as cancer, sometimes a little fun can go a long way. The Portuguese American Club hosted the Hope to Help Foundation’s Dance to Hope fundraiser May 22. The dance floor was filled with 120 dancers willing to learn new moves from Baile Explosivo dance professionals Dalia Irwin and Michaela King. Two generous women, Denise Lorber and Lisa Maxwell, were responsible for gathering the volunteers for the Dance to Hope fundraiser, in part because their own friend Michele Prickett has cancer and was able to dance at the event with her family. Hope to Help is a nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Karen Toppi to help Flagler County
