FOUR DAYS LATER NEWS EDITOR

FAMILY

Pulse was the first real gay club Tyler had ever been to — a place where he could feel safe in his identity after years of anti-gay bullying that made accepting his own sexual orientation a battle. Gay clubs and bars are more than just spots to get a drink or meet someone: They’ve been some of the few places where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people didn’t have to worry about someone giving them a dirty look, or worse, for holding a same-gender lover’s hand or sharing a kiss. “The first time I went there, it was an eye-opening experience,” Tyler said. “I felt proud. I felt empowered to be who I was. It was such a sense of freedom.” Tyler had been going to Pulse for about four years. He’d never worried about anti-gay harassment when he walked into the club each week. Sometimes, he went two or

three times a week. He used the same parking spot. The shooting shattered that sense of safety. “It was my sanctuary, and it was violated in a way that no one’s home, no one’s sanctuary, no one’s safe place should ever be violated,” he said. “Before Sunday, I would go into Pulse and not worry. I never worried about someone coming up and shooting me in the back. I never worried about that, and I never thought about that. ... Now, I feel paranoid. I shouldn’t feel like that, but I do.” For many members of the LGBT community, Tyler said, places like Pulse created a sense of family for those who’d lost their own when they came out. “A lot of us, sadly, don’t have the opportunity to have family, so we kind of pick and choose our family,” he said. “I’m lucky enough to have my family by my side, but others aren’t so lucky. Pulse was home. It was the base for everyone. You could not hear from somebody for two days, and you’d go, and lo and behold, they’d be there with a drink ready for you.” ORANGE AVENUE

Other locals rushed to contact friends and loved ones in the Orlando area as news trickled out about the shooting June 12.

Jenica “Hen” Frederickson, 37 and a Palm Coast artist, saw the news on her phone when she woke up June 12, and frantically searched for news of a friend who is an Orlando resident and film location scout who’d mentioned that she planned to scout a location on Orange Avenue, the street Pulse is on, the previous night. “She was looking at a section of that street,” Frederickson said. “I couldn’t get ahold of her. I didn’t get a Facebook check-in. I called her, texted her, called her mom ... getting no answers.” When the friend finally called around 11:15 a.m., Frederickson said, “I was really overwhelmed. ... I think I was a lot more upset than I realized.” OFFICIALS RESPOND

National and state officials spoke out about the shooting, with President Barack Obama addressing the nation at 1:30 p.m. June 12 and calling the attack “an act of terror, and an act of hate.” “This is an especially heartbreaking day for all of our friends, our fellow Americans, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender,” Obama said. “The place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub. It is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people

The shooting at the Pulse nightclub was the worst in the country’s history, killing 49 people.

The text messages started flooding in during the early morning hours. By the time Palm Coast resident Andrew Tyler, 22, awoke at about 5 a.m. June 12, there were more than two dozen, most of them seeking one thing: confirmation that Tyler was alive and unhurt, that he was not at his favorite nightclub in Orlando when a gunman barged in and killed 49 people in the deadliest mass shooting in the nation’s history. Tyler was safe. He’d canceled plans to visit the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando that evening, opting to stay with friends. “I woke up at 5 in the morning to my phone having 24-plus text messages, countless Facebook messages, countless phone calls from all over this country, from people trying to get in contact with me,” he said. That was how he heard about the shooting that killed two of his friends — Chris “Drew” Leinonen, 32; and Leinonen’s boyfriend Juan Guerrero, 22 — at Pulse during the club’s Latin theme night. “To get news like, ‘I’m so sorry Andrew, but you really need to read this,’” — linked with news articles about the shooting — “I could do nothing but sit in my bed, curl up in a ball and cry,” wondering if his friends were safe, Tyler said. Then, he said, “I had to do the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, call my mom and tell her, ‘I’m safe, I’m OK, I didn’t go to Pulse, but I don’t know where my friends are.’”

VIGIL PLANNED NEAR THE PIER Locals have planned a memorial candle lighting on the beach near the Flagler Beach pier at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 17, to honor victims of the Pulse shooting. Attendees are asked to bring their own candles and to park at the pier. For details, see facebook.com/ events/886370121488750/.

have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds and to advocate for their civil rights.” Florida Gov. Rick Scott traveled to Orlando June 12. In a Facebook post, he wrote, “This is an attack on our people. It’s an attack on Orlando. It’s an attack on FL. It’s an attack on America. It’s an attack on all of us.” The Facebook post drew immediate and angry responses from people saying that Scott should have mentioned the gay community, or that he should have called the attack “Islamic terrorism.” Like the Facebook post, none of the news releases posted to Scott’s official website at flgov.com as of the morning of June 13 mentioned the LGBT community or the fact

that the shooting took place at a gay club, and none mentioned the shooter’s religion. Scott requested a federal declaration of emergency June 13. Local officials also took to social media to address the community. In a news release posted to its official Facebook page, Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre “offered his personal condolences to the LGBT community.” “Those who were killed, injured or otherwise affected by this heinous and atrocious event are in my thoughts and prayers,” Manfre said in the news release. In a public post on Facebook, Palm Coast City Councilwoman Heidi Shipley wrote, “Very sad day. The world is so scary these days. Prayers to the families of the Orlando victims. It’s getting too close to home. How do you fight an enemy that can blend in so well? This is just horrible.” The Flagler Beach Police Department tweeted, “Our thoughts & prayers are with the Orlando shooting victims & their families. Thanks 1st Responders for your heroic effort to save lives.” REMEMBERING

Vigils have been held across the state, the nation and internationally as people mourn those killed in the Pulse shooting. June is gay pride month in the U.S., when the LGBT community has historically held parades commemorating the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan that have been credited as sparking the gay rights movement. After the shooting, organizers planned extra security at marches, and planned vigils to honor the 49 people killed in the shooting. Tyler spoke to a reporter as he drove to a vigil in Orlando June 13. “I want to feel that Pulse that I lost; that pulse that I lost, it lives in all of us,” he said. “Some of our pulses might not beat on the same frequency, but we all have a pulse, and it unites us.” Tyler said he had a message for the community: “I just want to tell everyone to call someone they haven’t talked to in a while, and tell them that they love them and miss them,” he said. “Because some of these people that I lost, I hadn’t talked to them in a week — but I feel guilty that it was a week, because now I’ve lost a week with that person. ... Regardless of sexuality, race or gender, I just want everyone to stand together and be there for one another. That’s all I want.”

Ormond Beach resident Katherine Orfinger was having a sleepover with her friends June 11 — many of them also from the GayStraight Alliance Club at Daytona State College, where Orfinger is a freshman — when the friends were awoken by a text from one of their moms about the shooting that killed 49 people at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando. “We were crying and praying,” Orfinger said. “We called all our

friends, and thank God no one we know was hurt.” Orfinger was one of the many locals turned away from the OneBlood Ormond Beach Donation Center, which was full. Allie Eddy made an appointment to donate blood to help the Pulse victims. She said it could just as easily have been her. “A lot of us know people who hang out at this club,” she said. “There’s nothing else we can do, so we try to do what we can.” With discussion of the shooting flooding Facebook newsfeeds, Ormond Beach resident Kahlin

Grant didn’t think anyone would see her post about putting a candle at the end of her driveway in honor of the victims. “So many people who were scared, angry, getting political and negative,” she said. “I just thought we should do something positive to acknowledge the victims.” But many of her friends then sent her pictures of their candles — an idea Grant got after seeing a friend from Orlando, where she used to live, do something similar. “Orlando really is in our backyard,” she said.

Portuguese Heritage is traditionally celebrated around the world on June 10, and this year was no different for the large Portuguese community living in Palm Coast. The center of the celebrations is always at the Portuguese American Cultural Center of Palm Coast (PACC) located at 1200 Palm Harbor Parkway. On Saturday, June 11, the Ancient City Pipes and Drums, and various town officials, helped kickoff the event by joining the community in its “raising the

flags, American and Portuguese” portion of the event. Both national anthems were played and sung by those present. The Honorary Consul of Portugal, Caesar DePaço honored two individuals with plaques, who have contributed to the betterment of the Portuguese Community in Palm Coast: Frank Meeker, Flagler County Commissioner and Antonio Amaral, Founder and past president of the PACC, also Founder and Philanthropic Donor of the Antonio Amaral Foundation. All guests joined in at the tasting of the famous traditional food and wine, and enjoyed the ambiance, with music inside and outside of the premises. For entertainment there was a traditional and very colorful Folklore Show consisting of the “Rancho Dança na Eira” folklore group, who came from Newark, New Jersey, specifically for this event, and our own “Corações de Portugal” folklore group. For some relief from the heat, the show was attended and enjoyed by many inside the club’s main hall. All went well with sunny skies and very warm weather and a good time was had by all.

Portuguese Honorary Counsel Caesar DePaco stepped outside his home in Plantation Bay to greet his guests on Friday, June 10. The morning brunch was in celebration of Portugal Day, the country’s day of independence. The flag of Portugal was raised in the courtyard of the home by DePaco and Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts, and followed by the singing of the Portuguese National Anthem. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect we would have the Portuguese Consulate in Palm Coast,” Netts said. “But I am not surprised. I’m a regular guest at the Portuguese American Club, and all of their events are always well attended.” The Portuguese Consulate opened in Palm Coast in April 2015. Prior to that the consulate had been in Orlando. DePaco said Florida has an estimated 150,000 Portuguese residents, with at least 10,000 living in Palm Coast. DePaco was joined by his wife, Deanna Paovani-DePaco, who

Portuguese Congresswoman Mara Joao Avila, his in-laws, Guilo Padovani, general consulate, and Judy Padovani, and Father Antonio dos Santos from Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church in Flagler Beach, were just some of the dignitaries in attendance. County Commissioner Frank Meeker, who attended with his wife, Debbie, described DePaco as a “down-to-earth” type of man.

“His wife is going to be out of town next week,” Meeker said. “He didn’t know what he was going to do in her absence. So he is going to come over to our house for a game of chess.” Many of the same people gathered again, on Friday evening, at the Open House of the Portuguese Consulate’s new offices on the first floor of the Chiumento building in Town Center.

In April 2015, the Portuguese Consulate moved from Orlando to Palm Coast. On Friday, June 10, there was an Open House at the Consulate’s new offices. The consulate, located at 145 City Place, suite 105, is one of 18 Portuguese Consulates in the country. The Open House included tours of the offices. Most of the tours were given by Honorary Consul Caesar DePaco. “When you come through that door you are on Portuguese soil,” DePaco said. Legally, and visually, this is true. The waiting area includes a television broadcasting Portuguese shows, and the decorations are from, and reflect, Portugal. Like all embassies in the United States, a consulate has special diplomatic status. “Palm Coast is the only consul in Florida,” DePaco said. “We have people coming here from Key West.” The large, active PortugueseAmerican presence in Palm Coast was a big part of the decision to move to the area. Of an estimated 150,000 Portuguese residents in Florida, 10,000 call Palm Coast their home. While the new offices were being developed by Tony Ama-

ral, services were provided at the same address in a suite on the third floor. The new offices are larger and easier to access. Those looking for consul assistance are required to make an appointment. Joao Queimado, technical manager, assists people with their paperwork, and transmitting documentation to and from Portugal. “Some people don’t have their paperwork, or don’t think they need it,” Queimado said. Part of Queimado’s job is to explain circumstances, such as property sales, that would require the Portuguese resident to have the necessary documents. For Nick and Kayla Klufas, the Open House was an opportunity to visit a “neighbor.” The couple work for ACI software, also at 145 City Place. Nick Klufas is also a candidate for Palm Coast City Counsel, District 3. “I’ve seen it being developed for a while,” Nicholas Klufas said. “It’s great to be able to see inside.”

MY VIEW

The Orlando community gathers downtown to show support.

The heartbeat — and Pulse — of Orlando OBSERVER ALUMNUS

ANDREW O’BRIEN GUEST WRITER

It was 9:06 p.m. I walked out of the News 13 Orlando newsroom, through the hallways, across the catwalk and got to my car in the desolate parking garage in downtown Orlando. I sat down in the driver’s seat and turned the car on as the music hummed in the background. It had been about 17 hours since chaos erupted at Pulse, the gay nightclub located just outside downtown Orlando — and only about 2 miles from both my house and the newsroom. I pass Pulse on my way to work every day. I was next to it Saturday morning because there’s a Dunkin’ Donuts right across the road, and we went there for coffee before going out to play golf. It actually even came up in the car during discussion because our friend visiting from Tampa hadn’t heard of it. That felt like a lifetime ago. In my car in the parking garage, I leaned back. I started to cry. And kept crying. I really didn’t know what else to do. AN EARLY MORNING TWEET

I fell asleep pretty late Saturday night, and then I happened to wake up around 4:30 a.m. A movie was playing on the TV in my room. My phone was sitting next to me, and I tapped on the Twitter icon. The Orlando Police Department’s Twitter account said there was a

Palm Coast native Andrew O’Brien was the first reporter hired by the Palm Coast Observer in 2010. shooting at Pulse. Multiple victims. People were urged to stay away from the area. I report on police activity all the time. It’s my job. But something didn’t seem right about this one. I retweeted the information from our work account, branded it as breaking news, and then went back to OPD’s account. As it would turn out, for the time being, updates were only going to come from Twitter. The media briefing was pushed back. Finally, the word came from Orlando police: The shooting was a “mass casualty situation.” Multiple people dead turned into 20 fatalities. That quickly jumped to 49 (not including the suspected gunman). Fifty-three people were taken to nearby hospitals. The deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States was unfolding in real time in front of my eyes.

HUMAN BEING FIRST, JOURNALIST SECOND

‘WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS’

I got into work around 8 a.m. It was Sunday, which means it’s usually pretty quiet in the newsroom. But it was an all-hands-on-deck situation: Every employee of News 13 was called in. Reporters and photographers from our sister station in Tampa Bay, Bay News 9, also sent crews up the I-4 corridor. The newsroom was buzzing. Most of us were in disbelief, but we had a job to do. We had news to report. And new information was coming in quicker than we could disseminate it. We were getting requests from international media outlets to provide insight on the shooting. At one point, I had a missed call, a voice mail and a text message from a news outlet in Ireland asking me to do a phone interview. Australia called us. I knew I wanted to be a journalist since I was about 5 years old. I would pretend being an ESPN reporter and would sign off reporting live from the kitchen or the driveway. I wanted to tell people’s stories in the community I worked in — stories of tragedy and triumph. Stories that others can relate to. That’s what drove me into the industry. Unfortunately, covering mass shootings and terror attacks is also part of the job. But I would be lying if I said it was easy to keep on the journalist mask for 17 hours until I could get into my car and be a human again.

Thousands attended a candlelight vigil on the green of the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts on Monday night in downtown Orlando. It was just before 7 p.m. that the 49th victim was identified. There were representatives from various organizations and different political arenas from across the country and world. There were people who lost friends and family members in the Pulse shooting. There was a lot of media, and there were also people who just wanted to be part of the grieving process. “We embrace diversity and equality,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer told the crowd in front of him. “(The city of Orlando) is a joyful melting pot of different cultures.” After a bunch of speakers, the crowd raised candles to light up the sky as the sun set just a day after the city’s darkest hours. My throat continued to swell up as I looked at people milling around, hugging each other, crying with each other, laughing with each other. One man was standing by himself as the crowd of thousands began to file out. He stared at the stage, at the rainbow lighting on the large Dr. Phillips Center building. He wiped away the tears from his red eyes. Others just lay on the grass and looked at the sky with the candles lit on the ground next to them. “Hate will not define us,” Dyer said. “And hate will not defeat us, because we are one Orlando.” It was a powerful yet delicate tribute to the city known as the City Beautiful.

EXTINGUISHING THE PROBLEM 3:45 a.m. 200 block of Ocean Crest Drive. Criminal mischief: A guard at a beachfront resort in Flagler County was sitting in his guard tower in the resort’s parking garage when he heard a knock on the door. He opened it and saw a fire extinguisher being set off and several people running away from the extinguisher. He ran after one of them, then stood behind the runner’s vehicle to stop him from leaving. A Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived and spoke to one of the young men, “who appeared to be flushed due to some sort of aerobic activity

and extremely sweaty,” according to the deputy’s report. But the young man said he had nothing to do with the fire extinguisher and had just been walking on the beach, that he was alone, and that he was flushed because of the weather. “It should be noted that it was 75 degrees and with a slight breeze,” the deputy wrote in the report. One of the other young men implicated himself, the flushed runner and two others in the fire extinguisher shenanigans, and said there were actually three extinguishers set off, not one. Deputies trespassed all four from the resort and arrested two.

Dunkin’ Donuts on Palm Coast Parkway, June 9.

The roof of Dunkin’ Donuts on Palm Coast Parkway caught fire at about 4 p.m. June 9, with smoke spreading to nearby streets. No one was hurt, but the building was a total loss. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Greg Nunziato was the first responder at the scene of the fire. He had been at a bank near the Dunkin’ Donuts when he saw the flames on the roof, and went inside to evacuate everyone, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. “Some of the employees didn’t even know the building was on fire,’’ Nunziato said in the news release. “They were

still taking orders.” According to a report from the city of Palm Coast, attempts to contain the fire on the roof were not successful, and it was discovered that fire had also entered the building. Crews from stations 21, 22, 23 and 25 responded, as well as volunteers, Fire Police and Flagler Fire Rescue with an engine and ambulance. The cause appears to have been accidental. The building was in the process of getting a new roof; however, the roofers were not working at the time of the fire. The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate. “Firefighters worked into the wee hours of Friday morning to make sure the fire was extinguished,” the city’s report states.

Man charged with exposing himself to girls at pier Two 15-year-old girls were at the Flagler Beach pier in the early morning hours of June 9 when a man exposed his genitalia to them, the girls told police. The girls said they’d been rinsing off at the pier’s open showers around midnight when 72-yearold James Tussing, a transient, followed them, asked them if they had a ride home, then rubbed his groin and pulled his genitalia out, saying to the girls, “Do you want some of this?” Tussing, talking to police, “confessed exposing himself to the girls and asking the girls if they wanted some of this,” according to a police report. Officers charged him with two counts of lewd and lascivious exhibition.

One motorcyclist died and another was injured June 11 in two separate crashes in Flagler County within eight hours. Seth Howard Sistrunk, 67 and a resident of East Palatka, Florida, was killed in a crash on State Road 100 at about 2:13 p.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. Sistrunk was riding a Harley Davidson west on S.R. 100 behind a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 27-year-old Palm Coast resident Brian Christopher Guidry, who had one passenger and was pulling a trailer. Sistrunk tried to pass the truck in a no-passing zone as the truck made a left onto County Road 305, according to the release. The motorcycle struck the left rear side of the truck. Sistrunk died at the scene of the crash. Guidry and his passenger were not injured. At about 9:45 p.m. June 11, 50-year-old St. Augustine, Florida resident Eddie Davis Jr. was in a motorcycle crash on U.S. 1 that severed his leg. Davis was riding a Suzuki south on U.S. 1. Palm Coast resident Richard Kenney, 33, was riding a Hyosung south on U.S. 1, and pulled over on the shoulder south of the road’s intersection with Old Kings Road. The Suzuki stopped in the right-hand lane next to the Hyosung. Behind Davis, 23-year-old Palm Coast resident Alexis Jacquart was driving south in the right-hand lane on U.S. 1 in a 2002 Dodge Neon. She didn’t see the Suzuki and struck it from behind. Rescuers took Davis to Halifax Health Medical Center by helicopter in critical condition.

o you want to be a lifeguard? After passing stringent physical requirements and CPR certification, recruits must perform a taxing “sea rescue” of their trainers. Flagler Beach Photography Club members witnessed such a test last month to observe the training. Recruits must be at least age 16, ocean-swim for 500 meters in less than 10 minutes, run 1/2 mile on the beach in less than 3 minutes, 30 seconds, and be able to drag a “victim” using special leverage techniques for 20 yards over the sand. Half of the 2016 recruits are women. There is a 50% attrition rate among recruits during 60 training hours over three weekends. They also must pass a drug test and are randomly tested throughout the season. Captains David Petkovsek and Andreaus Stocker each have over 2,000 hours of experience, and they certify recruits for the U.S. Lifeguard Association. Once trained, lifeguards are at their posts on Flagler Beach seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and otherwise only weekends as funding allows. Ocean Rescue is funded by the city of Flagler Beach and Flagler County and supplemented periodically by fundraisers to purchase lifeguard uniforms.

5 THINGS LIFEGUARDS LOOK FOR On Flagler Beach alone there are over 200 rescues a season. The guards are even more proud of another statistic: By forewarning or removing beachgoers from dangerous situations, they prevent an estimated 1,000 rescues a season. Lifeguards are trained to notice “pre-incident indicators” so they can anticipate a need for a rescue: 1. Unskilled swimmers 2. New Styrofoam or rental surfboards 3. Inadequate physical fitness 4. Inappropriate swimwear (jeans and T-shirt instead of a swim suit) 5. Alcohol consumption (half of all holiday rescues are related to alcohol consumption)

CAPT. DAVID PETKOVSEK’S BEACH SAFETY ADVICE 1. Talk to the lifeguards to get information on conditions and safest places to swim. 2. Even experienced swimmers can get into trouble, so always swim within view of the lifeguard towers. 3. Fishermen, surfers, and swimmers tend to clump together. Leave safety buffers between groups.

Frustrated by Holland Park delays, city could ditch contractor P

alm Coast officials are so frustrated with the glacial pace of renovation work at Holland Park that they might ditch current contractor Tumbleson White Construction, Inc. and bring in a new one. “I want that project finished. And I want it finished soon,” Mayor Jon Netts said at a City Council workshop June 14. “And if it means we have to get rid of this contractor, go after their performance bond and bring in another contractor to finish the job, I think the time has come for us to consider that.” “We’re all on the same page,” City Manager Jim Landon replied. “We initiated that process yesterday.” But, he said, there’s a downside: Ending the relationship with the contractor requires a legal process that would take time. Landon said the city’s legal team is drafting a notice to the contractor that if the contractor doesn’t put together a plan to make up the time, the city will go after the contractor’s performance bond. There has been some progress at the work site, Landon said, but, “They’re getting further and further behind every week.” The work was initially supposed to be over in March.

CITY PLANS $500,000 FOR PALM COAST PARKWAY TECH

Palm Coast officials plan to spend about $500,000 on a traffic optimization system they believe will ease traffic flow along the Palm Coast Parkway and Belle Terre Parkway corridors. “We can do a lot better than we’re doing now,” City Manager Jim Landon told City Council members during a council workshop June 14. “There are some signals that make no sense at all.” The system would use vehicle counters, closed-circuit TV cameras, traffic control monitoring technology and the city’s fiber optics cable system to let city staff adjust traffic signals from centralized hubs at the city offices or the public works department building, rather than at stations on the street. “The key to it is getting people to their destination as quickly and safely as possible,” Landon said. “That’s really what we’re talking about.” Landon said the system would decrease, not increase, staff time. “Right now, we have to go out in the field; we have to manually count,” he said. “So from a staff standpoint, this is a huge time saver.” The first phase of the project, to be completed in 2016, would cost $497,170.

The city of Palm Coast hopes to optimize traffic along part of Palm Coast Parkway in 2016, with more work to follow in 2017. Here’s the tentative plan: Fiscal Year 2016: - Palm Coast Parkway: Florida Park Drive to Pine Cone Drive (12 intersections) Fiscal Year 2017: - Belle Terre Parkway: Pine Lake Parkway to Palm Coast Parkway (westbound) (5 intersections) - Belle Terre Parkway: East Hampton Blvd. to Whiteview Parkway - (4 intersections) - State Road 100: Belle Terre Parkway to I-95 (6 intersections) - Palm Coast Parkway – Pine Lakes Parkway to Corporate Drive; Clubhouse Drive to Palm Harbor Parkway – (7 intersections) STAFF CAN RETURN TO FIRE STATION AFTER REMODELING

Flagler County can keep its emergency services staff members at Palm Coast Fire Station 22 on Palm Coast Parkway after the station is renovated. City Council members had spoken about asking the two county firefighter paramedics

Palm Coast officials plan to renew the city’s contract with the Humane Society, continuing a relationship in which the city maintains its own animal control officers, but the Humane Society handles shelter services. Under the contract, the city pays the Humane Society $75 for each dog or cat taken to the shelter, $200 for animals held in quarantine for rabies or a potential “dangerous dog” designation, $50 for livestock,

who work at the station to move to another station a few miles away, but the city isn’t requiring that, City Manager Jim Landon said at a City Council meeting June 7. “We sat down with the county administrator and the fire chiefs, and they were under the impression we weren’t going let their paramedics come back after the remodeling, which was not the case at all,” Landon said. The city did offer to have the two county staff members move to Station 24, which has more room, with individual bunk rooms instead of the shared bunk room arrangement at Station 22. During construction, the county staff members will have to move

out for about eight weeks, he said, but could park their ambulance at the Palm Coast Community Center, across the street from Fire Station 22. “They can park there, they can use those restrooms, they’ve got a little kitchenette in there, they can go have lunch,” he said. “We did have some preliminary discussions about long term, in the future. Same kind of conversation city council had, that eventually this building very likely will need to be replaced.” Discussion of future locations did not get beyond “preliminary conversation,” Landon said.

$20 for wildlife and “pocket pet” animals, and $31 for cats that are picked up and then released after sterilization, a rabies vaccination and ear notching. It costs about $3,000 per day to run the shelter, Executive Director Amy Wade-Carotenuto said at a June 14 City Council workshop, and less than 10% of that money came from the city of Palm Coast last year. Between strays, seized animals and wild animals, the shelter took in about 1,200 animals total from Palm Coast last year, she said. The city’s contract with the Humane Society requires renewal every 15 months.

he Flagler County Basketball league concluded its spring season with two division champions Saturday, June 11, at Carver Gym. No one took a trophy home—it was planned that way. Fitzgerald Belgrave and league Commissioner Lloyd Finley decided not to have trophies as a way to make sure players would simply play for the love of the game and for them to learn how to play hard even when there isn’t a shiny trophy sitting in front of them. “We wanted to teach them a life lesson to always give 100%, and that in life you don’t always get rewarded for everything,” Belgrave said. “The feeling that knowing you’ve done your best and developed the best you can should come before anything else. I know as a teacher myself that acknowledgement and accolades would be great, but we do it for the love of developing our youth.” The players seemed content to win the game while not holding up a trophy. They celebrated on the floor, hugged one another and ran off with joy. Flagler County Basketball has already begun its registration for the fall season, which will feature a second-grade clinic, plus divisions for grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12, starting in October. “We wanted to teach them a life lesson to always give 100%, and that in life you don’t always get rewarded for everything. The feeling that knowing you’ve done your best and developed the best you can should come before anything else.”

Hold on while I catch my breath … I knew I was at a disadvantage when those young, energetic teens came to shoot ball with me Friday, June 10, at Rymfire Park. I haven’t played a game of basketball in over a year, and it was three years before that last game. But, what was I to do? I made enough shots during a game of 21, and I played enough defense to get picked in the full court five-on-five. Something inside told me to make up an excuse and go on home, but I think the evil angel on the left side of my shoulder had assured me I’d be fine. Several minutes into the game, I thought, “This is going well. I’ve scored a basket, assisted on a play, and my player has yet to even touch the ball. I can get used to this.” Half an hour later, both teams are hovering around 10-9, going to 15, and I’m thinking, “I definitely won’t be playing in the next game, even if we win. I have to get off this court.” Just when I thought the game would end, seeing we had scored 15 and only needed another basket to win by the required two points, the other team scored. This went on for six more points until the other team eventually won 21-19. By the time we got to about 17 points, and my team was down a basket, I was sort of hoping we would miss, so the other team could win the game and relieve me of my exhaustion. I finished with four points and two assists (I’m a numbers guy— and a weirdo, for taking pickup game stats), four points better than I assumed I would score. Even after my high school coach declared me as the smartest player he’s ever coached, and, after reaching the Army basketball championship game in South Korea, I can honestly say I never felt more proud of walking off the court than I did Friday night, with both legs painfully cramping. Just give me a few more weeks of playing with those young bucks, and they’ll regret letting this out-of-shape “old man” play with them. Stay tuned.

s I laid on the kitchen floor, clutching my right wrist, I found it hard to breath. There was no respiratory issue — other than the fact I had a Jack Russell terrier licking my face. Buddy had turned into my own canine EMT, giving what I assume was his version of CPR. It was only appropriate that he responded — he was the reason I was down there. My husband had been fixing dinner, and mentioned the dogs hadn’t been out. My response: “First I need to — (insert scream and thump here).” Apparently, Buddy had needed to go out. He had an accident on the kitchen floor, leaving an impressive puddle. A puddle I didn’t see. Even with my thick-soled flip flops, my feet flew out from under me. Kodi was backup canine EMT, sniffing and doing triage on the rest of my sprawled-out body.

Buddy put himself in the doghouse after an accident sent me to the doctor.

Dogs are very sensitive to our needs, often staying close when we are injured or sick. I think Buddy might have been downright scared. He didn’t leave my side the rest of the night. I wasn’t angry with him. Honestly, I was in too much pain. So I sat and tried to watch TV, with an ice pack on my arm, refusing my husband’s offer of transport to the ER, and hoping my wrist wasn’t broken. In my head, I began devising

ways that I would be able to get my articles typed, and get to my scheduled interviews on Monday and Tuesday. A simple Velcro support, from a past injury, was wrapped around my wrist to prevent me from twisting it in the night. Surely I would be all better by morning. It wasn’t to be. I tried to convince myself that there couldn’t be anything really wrong since I could wiggle my fingers. Couldn’t bend my

wrist, or clench a fist, but wiggling — that’s good, right? I Googled my symptoms, looking for one simple sentence to confirm I didn’t need medical care. No dice. So we headed off to Florida Hospital Urgent Care in Daytona Beach, where I got to tell the nurse that I slipped on my dog’s piddle. An X-ray was ordered — Hurray! No broken bones. A sprain, maybe some stretched ligaments, but nothing more than a splint was required. A pain, but far better than six weeks in a cast — although I had already picked out my color: turquoise. So what have I learned this weekend? When Buddy has to go — he has to go. Check for “water” hazards, and most importantly, if I ever have an ailment that requires my face being licked furiously, my dogs are on call.

Veteran Services officer Sal Rutigliano receives 28 food gift cards for local veterans from Father Jason Trull of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

Local veterans receive food cards St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church recently presented 28 gift cards to Flagler County Veterans Services Officer Sal Rutigliano for distribution to veterans who could use some extra assistance. The church held its annual Health and Wellness fair April 23. Every year, funds leftover from sponsors are donated within the community. “This year Father Jason Trull decided to donate the proceeds in the form of these gift cards for veterans,” Rutigliano said. The cards are issued from local grocery stores in the amount of $30 each. Rutigliano and Eric Flores Febles, assistant Veterans Services officer, will issue the cards to veterans who have sought the services of their office, and are in dire need.

Rutigliano said there are 12,547 veterans in Flagler County. Every week to 10 days, Rutigliano said, a veteran walks through the Veteran Services doors who is either homeless, has low income, or is close to being evicted. “There are veterans in need right here in Flagler County,” Rutigliano said in a press release. “While we often have some of these cards to distribute around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the need is still here at other times during the year.” Veteran Services was established after World War II; the state of Florida created a statute to have Veteran Service offices to assist veterans with completing claims, obtaining benefits and helping dependents.

Mary laughs, “She wasn’t happy about that.” After graduating, J.C. went into the service, while Mary moved to Washington, D.C., for work. Once separated, they corresponded via letter, and decided they should get married. They were wed after J.C. returned from the service. Jeanne and Latrey Washington, married 63 years, grew up together and were dating by the age of 13 in Brentwood, Maryland. In November 1953, Latrey was home on furlough from the Marines when they decided to get married.

They picked the 11th since it was Veterans Day and everyone would be off to attend the wedding. Jessie and Clay Simpson have been married 58 years. Clay set out for love and found it when going to a house party with his aunt 60 years ago. Jessie had heard about Clay through her roommate at the time but had never met him. Clay had already served four years in the service and was attending the University of Kentucky when he met Jessie, who was a teacher. Their marriage has been wonderful since they have so much in common. Clay also complimented Jessie’s cooking. “She’s a good cook,” he explains. “ I’ve earned my diabetes.”

Margie and Randolph Arthur have been married 65 years. From kindergarten to 10th grade is how long it took Randolph to talk to Margie. He says it took so long because he had to grow up. Margie had no interest in boys; she loved her books. One day she decided to bring a comic book to school. She went to the gym and found a comfortable spot to read it. That was Randolph’s moment: “Margie, let me see your comic book,” he said. Margie says they never got around to reading that comic book. The next day she went back to the gym again, and saw Randolph sitting by himself across the way. Margie used her index finger to call him over, and that’s how their 65 years together began. As they dated, they blocked out the rest of the world. “It was just he and I,” Margie said. Randolph graduated high school and Margie was a year behind him; they got married

Final chapter as Flagler librarian

The American Flag Project is determined to have American flags throughout Palm Coast. LISA WOLFE STAFF WRITER

COMMUNITY EDITOR

It all began with a visit to Palm Coast to see her sister one January, nearly 30 years ago. Theresa Owen and her husband, Al, were living in Canada, and the Florida winter was far more appealing. She volunteered at the Flagler County Public Library, when it was crammed into Palm Harbor Shopping Center storefront. Her first job was opening oyster shells at Marineland for tourists who were hoping to find a pearl. “It was fun,” she said. “But I still volunteered at the library, and my kids’ school libraries.” She began her library career as an assistant librarian in the children’s department at the Flagler County Public Library. At the time she didn’t have the degrees needed to be a librarian, but that would change, and she would advance to her current position as children’s librarian, the job she will say goodbye to on June 23. “I remember feeling so at home when I started here,” Owen said.

CLOSING THE BOOK There will be a reception will be held for Theresa Owen from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 17, at the Flagler County Public Library, 2500 Palm Coast Parkway NW. Refreshments compliments of the Friends of the Library.

“I am the oldest of eight, so I have been taking care of children my whole life.” She implemented the PAWS to Read program, a joint venture with the Flagler Humane Society. Owen received the Outstanding Achievement Award for her innovative programming in 2007, when her staff built an igloo out of milk cartons for the children. “We wish her well on the next chapter of her life, but she will truly be missed by all,” said Library Director Holly Albanese.

Would you go to a dog groomer for legal advice?

Nikki and Larry White, founders of The American Flag Project, have a goal set for July Fourth to make Palm Coast the most patriotic city in Florida. The thought came after watching a TV program from 2008 where research was done by large universities that studied the influence of the American flag. According to the study, it was proven that the presence of the flag increased voter participation. Nikki hopes to do the same and make Palm Coast the most patriotic city in Florida. As a young girl, Nikki would watch parades. Whenever she would see an American flag she would get choked up. After Nikki had her idea a year and a half ago, the Whites started to brainstorm. Larry set a goal to give out a million flags a year. To kick off the project, Nikki started taking flags with her whenever she rode her bike, and gave flags to people she met. Soon after starting The American Flag Project, Nikki heard about Conley Court, a street with 27 homes, and 27 3-by-5-foot American flags along each mailbox. she says. The Whites have started The American Flag Project paying costs up front out of their own pockets and rely on donations to replenish mailbox flags. Nikki hopes to one day start a polemaking company where disabled American veterans and locals who are still unemployed can work. The Whites hope to make their goal for July Fourth, and on June 21 will be receiving a proclamation from the city of Palm Coast. The American Flag Project is looking for a patriotic benefactor before July Fourth to make Palm Coast the most patriotic city so they can purchase 1,000 mailbox flags. keep this going.” The Whites have been handing out flags, attending Flagler Beach’s First Friday and have set up 22 jars full of flags throughout Palm Coast. Although the flags are free, the Whites do ask for a donation so they can purchase more flags to spread across town. As the Fourth of July got nearer, Nikki realized they need a short term goal. She hopes that they can have American flags all over town and have Palm Coast recognized as Florida’s most patriotic city. Nikki has a strict policy of only handing out flags made in America, although most of the poles come from China. Exceptions are made for special orders. The Builder Paintings reinforce the gallery’s finances. To reach his goal, Graham is doing what he does best, and that’s paint, often late into the night. “I’m painting very fast, but I’m using 18-19 years of experimenting,” he said. Graham describes his style as “post apocalyptic Southern gothic graffiti.” He is a student of art history, but he is also a great experimenter, often coming up with unusual textures mixed into his paints. The most recent formal experiment involves drawing with acrylic paint squeezed out of a spout on a bottle that is normally used for hair products. He calls it his “acrylic pen” and uses it to create lines and human forms on wax paper or velum; then he presses the paper onto a painting like he’s making a print. Graham is also using aluminum foil in his paintings, giving some portions a luminous quality. “It gets you into a lucid state,” he said of the foil. “You see all kinds of things in there. Your mind becomes a projector. Then, after an hour of doing that, you don’t need the foil anymore.” He compares the sensation to something songwriter Tom Waits said in an interview: that the best songs are those that come to you “like dreams taken through a straw.” Graham’s 50 pieces are diverse in subject matter and style: He has a painting of a cowboy inspired by Louis

A new art show by J.J. Graham at Salvo Art will raise funds for improvements to the gallery.

To raise money for improvements to the second floor of his art gallery, J.J. Graham is on track to complete what he calls a “creative marathon”: He’s finishing 50+ paintings in just a couple of months for an art show, “The Builder Paintings,” to be hosted Saturday, June 18, at Salvo Art. Compared with the thousands of dollars he usually gets for his commissions and other paintings, Graham said he’s planning to keep the prices of these 50

pieces affordable — in the $500 range, depending on the size — to reach his goal of $25,000 for the gallery. Salvo Art has been in existence for more than two years now at the current location, on the grounds of Nature Scapes, at 313 Old Brick Road, Bunnell. Slowly, Graham and co-owner Petra Iston have made improvements at the gallery, first subdividing the space for individual studios, then buying an air-conditioning system. Next, Graham wants to subdivide the second floor for more studios, which would help

will be his fourth or fifth solo show at his galleries in the past several years. And as with his other shows, Graham’s “intuition” on canvas is something worth experiencing.

Graham wrote on the Salvo Facebook Page: “Each person or business who purchases one of these paintings will have their name inscribed on a cinder block above where I will be painting when the studios are built. This will serve as documentation of the work for a book that will catalogue the paintings, as well as a reminder to me each time I look up of the people who helped us build out the Salvo Art Project.” Studio design: Joseph Pozzuoli’s architecture firm, JPA, is designing the second-floor studios at Salvo Art. Designs will be on display next to the paintings at the show.

The dean of Daytona State College’s Flagler Palm Coast campus has lived in the community since 1985. BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

A man who will be remembered as a college dean, a leader among fundraisers, and a master of ducttape repairs will be retiring this month. To celebrate Kent Ryan’s retirement, the community is invited to a party and concert June 17, at the Flagler/Palm Coast campus of Daytona State College, where he will remain the dean until June 30. Ryan, 63, moved to Palm Coast in 1985 and influenced many circles. “I got involved in the community and have been involved in the community ever since then,” he said. Ryan’s career began with 23 years at Florida Power and Light. Then, he spent five years with Florida Hospital Flagler, where he established the Florida Hospital Foundation in Ormond Beach and Flagler County. He was recruited to raise money for Daytona State College, and then transitioned to become dean. Among Ryan’s accomplishments while serving as chairman of the Chamber of Commerce is the establishment of Leadership Flagler in 1992, which is still

making an impact each year in the community more than two decades later. He is also a family man. With his wife, Maureen, he has two daughters, Shannon and Casey, who graduated from Seabreeze High School. Casey Ryan said her dad’s nickname at home is Big Ben, after the clock in England, because he is always on time and likes other people to be punctual, too. Another quirk: “He feels that he can fix anything with duct tape,” Casey Ryan said. When she was a child, she recalled, “we went skiing one year, and we split the snow suit. He had duct tape with him and just duct-taped it up.” She remembers her dad being involved in Bible study, Rotary, Toastmasters. “He’s met and really has made a positive touch on so many people,” she said. Ryan’s advice for his successor? “Get involved in the community,” he said. “The college is an important component for economic development, and we need to continue making sure our students have opportunities that they can excel in once they graduate from the college.”

Casey Ryan wrote this via email to describe her father: “Superman. Game changer. Community builder. Visionary. Eagle Scout. Father and husband. A Godly man of high character, generosity and selfishness.”
