Southern Living Magazine includes Flagler Beach in its “Most laid back beach towns” list, along with Ocracoke Island, North Carolina; and Port Aransas, Texas. Described as a place where “formal attire means your best pair of flip flops,” the article included quotes from Flagler Beach business owners Frank Gromling, Ocean Art Gallery and Ocean Publishing; and Marti Leavines, owner of Si Como No Inn. Flagler Beach was noted as being dog-friendly, and the story of course included the A-Frame Flagler Beach Pier as the city icon. WHAT IS INTERMITTENT EXPLOSIVE DISORDER? According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, intermittent explosive disorder is characterized by discrete episodes of failure to resist aggressive impulses resulting in serious assaults or destruction of property. Virtually no research has been done on intermittent explosive disorder as defined by DSM criteria. Source: pubmed.gov
Kim Novak dreaded the calls from the school. Calls that would come multiple times a week, asking her to come and pick up her daughter, Angel. Calls that often came less than an hour after she had put Angel on the bus. Novak knows that Angel’s medical condition makes her difficult, at times, to handle. The time Angel was at school was the time Novak used to clean the house, shop and catch up on much-needed sleep. “She was diagnosed with severe autism, pica (eating nonfood items), intermittent explosive disorder and a chromosome translocation,” Novak said. For the interview, I brought along a gift of a small stuffed rabbit to help Angel feel more comfortable. But even offering the gift agitated the young girl, causing her to go through a ritual of sorts, repetitive actions, and loud objection. Although Angel’s struggles continue, there is one clear sign that she is getting help: The early-morning calls from school stopped. Why? Kim Novak has a simple explanation, and that is a

teacher. When Angel got to Durand Brown’s ESE class, she not only stayed the day – she thrived. Novak said that when she would praise him, Brown would credit Angel with her own success. “Angel was in the right environment, surrounded by the right people,” Novak said. “He was the only one who treated her like a kid.” ‘THEY KNOW I CARE ABOUT THEM’
During his interview, Brown played down the role he had in Angel’s and his other students’ development. This time, his principal, Paul Peacock, who attended the interview via conference call, interjected. “Mr. Brown is being very humble,” Peacock said. “It is atypical for a teacher to be as open and communicate as much as he does. It should be the norm.” Brown, who has a degree in psychology, previously taught in Baltimore and liked working with the more challenging students. Regarding his work at Indian Trails, he said: “I care about my kids, and they know I care about them. But we were a team, a family with four adults and six kids. We all worked the whole classroom, and they really helped me a lot.” In Angel’s case, Brown realized that she had academic potential that had been masked by behavioral issues. “I asked if she watched TV with the closed captioning on,” Brown said. “Angel has an extensive vocabulary and can read.” Brown’s method of keeping in touch with the parents is a bit different. Using an app on his phone, he can update parents on what worked and what didn’t on any day. He has found that by being able to text, he and the parents can communicate in a timely manner that doesn’t require special school meetings or class dis-
FIVE THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO MAKE THEIR ESE STUDENTS SUCCESSFUL 1. Continue to remind the student they are about to make a change (new class, new school). 2. Visit the school with your child before school starts. 3. Meet the teacher (if possible) before classes begin. 4. Be involved. Reinforce what they have learned. 5. Communicate with the teacher during the school year.
ruption. “I need to know if they didn’t have a good morning, or maybe their medication was given late the night before,” Brown said. “I want to be able to reassure the parents that their kids are safe. That’s a big deal to me, especially when dealing with special kids.” NEXT STEP: HIGH SCHOOL
Paraprofessionals are assigned to students, after an extensive team discussion and review of the child’s IEP (individualized education program) determines the need. “A team meets to completely discuss the factors,” Peacock said. “It’s a conglomerate of people making sure that the needs are met, and accommodations they need are in place. At Indian Trails, we put the individual into the IEP, and it’s tailored to each student, and not based on the programs offered. We have to adjust our programs to meet the needs of the students.” Brown said he uses positive behavior and gives parents the ability to institute some of what is done in class in the home. As Angel heads off to Matanzas High School in a few weeks, Novak, like many parents, is a little apprehensive about the change. Things went so well this year she hated to see it end. “I want my kids to go as far as they can go,” Brown said. “There are changes in everyone’s lives.”
CONSISTENCY THROUGH THE SUMMER
Meetings have already been conducted with the schools and teachers as the students move up. Brown said he has shared with the new teachers what worked well with each child. Flagler County offers a summer program for eligible students to help keep them on a schedule of consistency and routine. “Not every student has extended school year. That’s up to the team,” Peacock said. “These students can be served until they are 22 years old in the public school system, so they can continue to grow and develop as a student, and a person, while they are taught additional life skills.” The only chance Novak has to shop for groceries or clean, is when her daughter is at school. “Something as simple as getting through a school day, and knowing she was cared for, and treated like a person — you can’t put a price on that,” Novak said. GIFT ACCEPTED
As she became accustomed to me during our interview, as I talked to her mom in the kitchen, Angel relaxed. Her eyes kept resting on the bunny. “Would you like the bunny?” I asked. Her head gently nodded and, once again, I held it out to her. “Thank you,” Angel said.

Their injuries and the loss of life should remind us to unite in the climate of freedoms created by our forefathers. Regardless of our race, religion, how we live or who we live with, we are all Americans — free to be ourselves without permission from anyone, and without fear of intimidation or retaliation.”
The Palm Coast Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors, city and county officials took turns reading the text of the Declaration of Independence, and the Palm Coast Community Band played “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Nikki White of The American Flag Project told the audience about the U.S. flag’s history and symbolism. “We believe it’s vital to have patriots who not only support our country, but understand why they do,” White said. “The American flag is a symbol of freedom from dominance and freedom to live your days in pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. ... Of all of our freedoms as Americans, Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts asked at the city’s July Fourth ceremony, which do we cherish the most? “Is it our right to freedom of religion that assures us we can worship who we choose, when and where and how we choose?” he said. “Or is it our right to freedom of speech that guarantees that our words can be heard without fear of reprimand? Is it our privilege to vote, that guarantees the leadership choices we make are counted? Our freedom to pursue happiness gives us the privilege to live or travel anywhere we wish and work any job for which we may qualify; to marry, and to raise a family; to receive an education, to join a political party, a union, or any other organization of our own choice — and to enjoy the company of good friends in a public venue without fear of harm.” That last freedom, Netts said to the audience of about 50 who attended the 8 a.m. July 4 ceremony at Heroes Memorial Park, had been “catastrophically vio-

Why no firework enforcement? Dear Editor: The Fourth of July is certainly an important historical date in this country’s history and worthy of celebration. However, it seems that its celebration has morphed for some into an excuse to make loud noise and blow things up. For days before and during the holiday, Palm Coast sounded like a Middle East war zone with window-rattling explosions that no doubt terrorized wildlife, pets and maybe some veterans with PTSD, while simply annoying others that like their peace and quiet and sleep. The folks responsible seem to have a perverse fascination with explosions more so than a spirit of celebrating our nation’s independence, and they show little regard for others. They thumb their noses at the Florida fireworks laws and disregard local noise ordinances. Compounding the problem is what certainly appears to be a lack of interest by local law enforcement in enforcing the state and local laws. As blatant and pervasive as these violations obviously are, I suspect there have been very few arrests or citations issued.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, from July 1-4, there were 57 calls related to fireworks, plus five noise complaints. In the same range last year, there were 32 calls about fireworks and 10 noise complaints. Flagler Beach Police Capt. Matt Doughney reported that, despite spreading the word that fireworks are illegal in Flagler Beach, “People still blasted off.” Unless someone is caught in the act, no arrest can be made, he said, and the traffic makes it nearly impossible for an officer to respond to a call about fireworks on the beach on July 4.

THIEF BREAKS INTO CAR, STEALS OWNER’S MANUAL 8:50 p.m. First block of Woodlyn Lane. Burglary from vehicle: Someone broke into a 64-year-old man’s 2007 Ford car, rummaged around in it, and stole only the owner’s manual — ignoring a GPS unit and “other high dollar items” in the car. There were “no signs of forced entry,” according to a Sheriff’s Office report. On the same street that night, someone broke into a 44-year-old woman’s Chevy Malibu and stole her $150 radar detector, along with a $100 GPS unit and $50 garage door opener. She’d left the car unlocked. There were other burglaries from cars reported nearby.
CAR WINDOWS SHOT WITH BB GUN 9:18 p.m. First block of Ryan Drive. Criminal mischief: Someone shot into the windows of two cars at two separate Ryan Drive homes with a BB gun or pellet gun, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. In one case, the pellet didn’t go the whole way through the glass of the front window of a 2013 Nissan Rogue. But two doors down, a pellet shattered the rear windshield of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to the report. Deputies didn’t find the pellets or BBs.
FLAGLER COUNTY’S HIGH SCHOOLS EARN NATIONAL RECOGNITION
NOMINATIONS FOR SENIOR CITIZEN DAY BEING ACCEPTED
The Washington Post has been ranking high schools since 1998, as part of the paper’s “Challenge Index.” In the latest list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools,” Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools made the list. Data from approximately 22,000 public high schools throughout the country were examined and 2,440 made the list. The Challenge Index takes the total number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge tests given to students, and then divides that total by the number of seniors who graduated. Using that criteria, Flagler Palm Coast High School ranked 1,864, and Matanzas High School ranked 1,999. To see the Post’s entire list: apps.washingtonpost.com/local/ highschoolchallenge/.
Nominations are being accepted for the second-annual National Senior Citizen Day. Email nominations, including their full name and a brief description about their contributions, to seniors_2015@cfl. rr.com. Submission deadline: July 21. The names will be published, and residents of Flagler County will vote for their favorite seniors. Two or three seniors will be chosen. The ceremony will be Aug. 21, 2016. The time and location will be announced at a later date.

The city of Palm Coast is seeking to recover more than $57,000 in money it spent removing hazardous trees, doing wildfire mitigation and handling public nuisances on private property. Assessment notices will be sent out to the owners of the properties, many of whom live out of state, according to city records. The highest single assessment was a $1,800 assessment for the Group Golf of Palm Coast for hazard tree/wildfire mitigation on the Matanzas Woods Golf property. Only two more of this year’s 195 assessments were for more than $1,000: a $1,005 assessment for an HSBC/Bank of America-owned property at 23 Patchogue Lane, and a $1,136 assessment for a privately owned property at 72 Farragut Drive. A public hearing on the assessments will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 in the community wing of the Palm Coast City Hall at 160 Lake Ave.
Bova scheduled for pretrial in Mobil murder case
Joseph Frank Bova, the man charged with first degree murder in the Feb. 21, 2013 shooting of Mobil gas station clerk Zuheily Rosado, has at times refused to take the medications prescribed for his schizophrenia and walked out on one psychiatrist charged with evaluating him, his attorney said in a July 5
pretrial hearing. Bova appeared before Circuit Judge Matthew Foxman for the hearing. His psychiatric evaluations haven’t yet been completed, defense attorney Raymond Warren said. Foxman scheduled Bova for an Aug. 2 hearing. This was Bova’s first appearance before Foxman, who called Bova up to the witness stand and asked him how he was doing, and whether he’s been taking his medications. Bova replied that he has, and then said that the meds “make me feel kind of sick.” When Foxman asked him where the meds make him feel sick, Bova replied, “My stomach.” Bova, now 28, was arrested Sept. 12, 2013 in Boca Raton, Florida, where detectives found him living out of his car. They searched it and found a SCCY 9-mm semiautomatic handgun that ballistics tests identified as the handgun used in the murder. Detectives who questioned Bova at the time fun him lucid and capable of answering questions, according to a Sept. 14, 2013 press conference. But Bova has since been diagnosed with a schizophrenic disorder, and Circuit Judge David Walsh has in the past found Bova incompetent to stand trial and ordered him to a state psychiatric hospital for treatment and evaluation.

IFLAGLER NAMED FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR
Last week, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) named iFlagler the “Small District Franchise of the year.” iFlagler, the school district’s virtual school, offers middle and high school courses and uses the same curriculum as FLVS. Classes are taught by local teachers, so students can interact face-to-face with teachers and staff, according to a Flagler County School District news release. iFlagler was established six years ago. Just a few years ago, there were 300 half-credit enrollments, but that num-
But last year, in a July 15 competency hearing, Walsh found Bova competent to proceed to trial after a psychologist testified that he’d seen signs of malingering and that although Bova is schizophrenic, he understood the charges against him and had said explicitly that he hoped to be found incompetent so that his case would be dismissed.
Man charged with beating children over chores
A 36-year-old Flagler Beach man beat and humiliated two children “for not doing their cleaning chores to his satisfaction,” according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office report. The man, North Daytona Avenue resident Jason Moffit, was charged July 2 with two

counts of abuse with great harm/cruelty to a child. About a week before the July 2 incident, the children told a neighbor they were being abused, and the neighbor helped them create a safety plan to come to her if they were ever abused again, according to the report. They used it at about 2 a.m. July 2, sneaking out after Moffit “physically, verbally and emotionally abused them throughout the evening,” punching, hitting and kicking the children, cutting off the girl’s waist-length hair to above her shoulders and shaving the boy’s head as a punishment, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The children said that he‘d come home angry that evening and had argued with his girlfriend in front of them. The neighbor called the police after the children arrived at her

house. Law enforcement officers noted that the boy’s face was swollen and his head freshly shaved, with “multiple red razor burn brush strokes and abrasions” to his scalp. There were abrasions on his arm and abdomen, where he said Moffit had hit and kicked him. The girl also had bruises on her face an arm and hip, and told law enforcement officers that Moffit had punched her. Moffit was released on a combined $10,000 bond.

ITEMS PICKED UP
“I look at them and say, ‘That would be nice,’” he said. In fact, a second man in his neighborhood has begun picking up trash, as well. Herb’s wife, Leslie Klug, is amused by his walking clothes and buggy, but she supports his mission. “I would not talk to him if I saw him,” she laughed. “He wears this silly Henry Blake hat from M.A.S.H. I would think he was strange, and I would cross the street.” A former technical writer for Xerox, Klug has a professional looking notebook full of photos of his finds, and a map of where he goes. Currently he walks between Pine Grove, Providence and Belle Terre Parkway. He has no plans to expand this route. The best and most valuable item he found was a red Fitbit, one exactly like the Fitbit his wife gave him this year for Father’s Day. “The battery was still working,” he said. “I am on Palm Coast SwipSwap, so I thought I would see if I could find the owner.” But, when he got home to check how far he had walked that day on his own Fitbit, the rubber case was empty. He had lost it! And so, the Fitbit he found became his.

Herb Klug’s doctor told him to “get off his butt and start walking.” But walking, Klug says, is something he likes “less than he likes eating dry straw.” Klug couldn’t convince himself to walk for the sake of walking — even if it was for his health. One day a casual glance out the car window gave him a purpose to walk. “I was leaving the neighbor-
hood to go to the store and noticed bottles, napkins and cups along the side of the road,” Klug said. “And the light went off: I could pick up trash while I walked.” He started carrying a bright yellow plastic bucket, that his cat’s litter comes in, and walked about eight-tenths of a mile, round trip, the first day. He returned home with a full bucket of trash. As his daily trips took him farther around the neighborhood, he added more buckets. Now he walks at least four miles a day – five when there’s a lot of trash. Most of the stuff he picks up goes into the recycling bin or the trash. A discarded stroller left out for the trash was repurposed into a makeshift “trash buggy;” a discarded Swiffer became a nailended stick. Recently, he found one item that made him believe he has seen it all: a rubber rooster. He’s picked up what he calls “head-nodding acquaintances” along with the trash. It is not unusual for people to roll down their car windows, as he picks up hundreds of cigarettes at the stop light at Belle Terre and Whiteview parkways, and thank him. Some have suggested that more people should do the same thing. He resists the urge to say that the “more people” could be them.

SPORTS Foosball: I’m game

an’s best friend has become the USA Olympic swimmers’ top coping method to deal with the stressful situation of qualifying for this year’s Rio Olympics. Who thought of the idea? Palm Coast’s very own Morgan Weinberg. Weinberg, now the programs and services manager for USA Swimming Club Development, sought several methods to help reduce stress for the athletes in such a competitive environment. An animal lover herself, she had read an article about how looking into a dog’s eyes can reduce stress and anxiety, so she figured therapy dogs could be of great assistance to the swimmers. “I reached out to a local nonprofit called Domesti-Pups, and their response was amazing,” Weinberg said. Domesti-Pups sent out dogs to the swimmers during the USA Olympic Swim Trials, and it was a total success. “The dogs have been awesome; they’ve done what they’re here for,” Weinberg said. “All the athletes love them.” One swimmer credited her personal swim record to spending time with the “doggies” before the race, and she repeated her therapy before all of
her subsequent events. The 2016 Olympic Games will kick off on Aug. 5, in Rio, and, according to Weinberg and the viral video, which has been viewed over 1.3 million times, the USA swimmers hope their furry friends will be accompanying them.
Weinberg hopes other Olympic sports will adopt therapy dogs in the future.
ow did I manage to live for almost 30 years, having traveled from arcades to sports centers, and never play foosball? I spent Independence Day with the Calugars, and, after stuffing my face with burgers, dogs and tasty desserts, I went upstairs to sing a little karaoke with the kids. I led the pack in our far-from-perfect-but-joyful rendition of “Livin’ on a Prayer.” After butchering other songs, I saw some of the other kids playing foosball. Now, I’ve seen that table hundreds of times in the past, but it never looked interesting — until this time. So, I played my very first game against new Palm Coast resident Jacob Huntoon, and I beat him 10-8. Following my fist pump for the victory, I eagerly awaited my next opponent, Saxon Swantic, who served me some pie called “humble.” She won 10-5. After a short break, I returned to the table, this time with a teammate, Elizabeth Orefice. We played Huntoon and my nephew Malik Cooper, who beat us. I thought about grounding Malik, because he didn’t allow me to win, but I figured that wouldn’t be fair. In addition to winning, I discovered other benefits within foosball. Twisting those table rods creates a solid forearm workout. After just one game, I felt like I had been curling dumbbells. Foosball also initiates camaraderie and teamwork. Teammates have to communicate and work together in order to be successful. Lastly, most ages can play and win against each other, depending on experience. I’m still a bit shocked it took me this long to play, but better late than never. And I hope to find a table soon, so I can begin to beat my wife and nephew — and any of our visitors — on a consistent basis.
WHO IS MORGAN WEINBERG?
Photos by Kara Raney
Therapy dogs helped swimmers relax before their Olympic swim trials.
Morgan Weinberg moved to Palm Coast in the fourth grade from Texas. She attended Flagler Palm Coast and ran cross country, track, played tennis, lacrosse and soccer throughout her four years. She was seeking an internship with the Olympic movement to complete her master’s degree at the University of Florida in Tourism and Commercial Recreation, and she discovered USA Swimming, which turned into a full-time job.

Do Samantha’s nine lives include one as a dog?
PETS OF TH E WEEK
Cats may not be as ‘independent’ as you think.
JACQUE ESTES STAFF WRITER
S
amantha may have been a dog in a previous life. She comes when called (sometimes), and she craves attention. Evenings are spent curled up on my husband’s lap while we watch TV. Cats are typically described as being aloof, but don’t con-
fuse this show of independence as a lack of need for human contact. All cats rely on their owners for food, water, a home, medical care, a clean litter box, and, yes, love. It’s just that they, like their owners, have different personalities. My daughter called last week, worried about her cat, Robby. The problem? Robby was being affectionate and, well, acting like a cat. Robby’s previous owner died, and there’s a possibility that Robby was with him for a bit afterward – no one knows for certain – but he gets nervous when my daughter sleeps. He checks on her by nibbling on

her face, and if she ignores him, the nibbles get more pronounced. Not conducive for a good night’s sleep. But when he stopped this behavior, she began to worry. She and Robby have been together for two years now. He is not fond of change. His doctor makes house calls so he doesn’t have to travel the “T” to go to the vet for checkups, nail trims, etc. Some may say she’s too tolerant. But she is a responsible pet owner and takes her role as caregiver seriously. I wish more people would. There are simple ways to develop a rewarding relationship with your cat. 1. Keep them indoors. Outdoor cats have a shorter lifespan. As long as they have things to keep them busy inside, and a nice window to look out at the birds and lizards, they can adjust. 2. Microchip your cat. This is handy in the event they do get out, or if you have to evacuate.

Some cats will wear a collar, if so, use a breakaway collar. 3. Regular vet checks are a must. 4. Spay or neuter. This will also help resist the urge to go outside. If you adopted, your cat should have had the surgery. If not, there are low cost options available. Call your local shelter. 5. Feed your cat a nutritonal diet that includes fresh water. Ask your vet for amounts so you don’t overfeed. 6. Clean that litter box, at least daily. There are disposable litter boxes that are inexpensive and can be replaced every month or so. This prevents the urine from soaking into the plastic. 7. Brush your cat, even short hair cats. This helps them with their grooming, and reduced hairballs. 8. Play time – Regular play sessions, even with older cats, keeps them mentally and physically healthy.

City of Flagler Beach’s Ocean Rescue Services receives supplies from FHF Florida Hospital HealthCare Partners.
Florida Hospital donates supplies to lifeguards On June 21, Florida Hospital Flagler’s branch of Florida Hospital HealthCare Partners donated medical supplies to the City of Flagler Beach’s Ocean Rescue Services. “Our lifeguards are the first responders to beachgoers who fall victim to sudden illnesses and injuries,” said Tom Gillin, recreational director for the City of Flagler Beach, via press release. “The hospital donates these supplies each year and we are so grateful for the support. This donation allows us to continue providing the highest quality of safety services to all visitors to our beautiful beach.”
The donated items included gloves, face masks, ammonia, alcohol pads, gauze, biohazard containment materials, and more. “These items are essential to what we do,” he said. “When someone is injured on the beach, our lifeguards can use the donated supplies to help right away. It makes a real difference.”

of exercise and healthy snacking. The 21st Century Community Learning Center is a free academic enrichment program for qualifying students at Bunnell, Rymfire and Wadsworth elementary schools. During this event, Millan emphasized the health benefits of exercising 60 minutes each day and choosing healthy, non-processed snacks. She gave the students examples of healthy choices and did an interactive exercise activity. “Healthy does not equal gross,” Millan told the students. “There are so many delicious and healthy snacks to choose from, and they come from the earth, not a factory – that’s why fruit is called nature’s candy.”
