n Palm Coast’s race for mayor, it wasn’t even close: Milissa Holland had an insurmountable lead of 63.11% when the Flagler County Supervisor of Elections office posted its first update of primary election results Aug. 30. When all precincts reported in, Holland had 63.43%, Her nearest competitor was Dennis McDonald, who had just 15.02%. “I look forward to serving the residents of Palm Coast,” Holland said at a campaign watch party at Salvo Art Project after the results came in. This will be Holland’s second time serving local residents as an elected official: She was elected to the Flagler County Commission in 2006. Of her second win in a local election, Holland said, “Every time, it’s still a very humbling experience. It’s exciting. We worked really hard. We had tons of volunteers. We put in a tremendous amount of effort.” Holland will replace longtime Mayor Jon Netts, who is termlimited and could not run again. Netts attended Holland’s watch party at Salvo Art Project. Incumbent Elections Supervisor Kaiti Lenhart won the race for elections supervisor with 56.21% of the vote. That race was decided Aug. 30; there will be no runoff. All three candidates were Republicans. In the race for sheriff, former undersheriff Rick Staly won the Republican primary, with 37.62% of the vote, while John Lamb trailed him with 33.25%. In the Democratic primary for sheriff, former Flagler County Sheriff’s Office sergeant Larry Jones won with 53.83% of the vote, beating his former boss, incumbent Sheriff Jim Manfre, who had 46.17%. Staly and Jones will face off in the general election in November. In the Palm Coast City Council races, Robert Cuff won with 52.89% of the vote, beating competitors Sims Jones and Arthur McGovern for the District 1 seat.

Milissa Holland has been elected mayor of Palm Coast.
Because Cuff got more that 50% of the vote, that seat will not go to a runoff. Cuff said he was “relieved” to have the elections process over with early. “I wasn’t sure, obviously — Sims Jones ran a great campaign,” he said after the primary results were released. “But I wasn’t looking forward to going to November; I’m glad it’s done.” Cuff’s outright win means the City Council could appoint him to fill former councilman Bill McGuire’s vacant seat, rather than appointing a temporary council member who would only serve until after the general election — a process the council had hoped to be able to avoid. “Hopefully, this will take that out of play,” Cuff said. “The next four years, I hope, are going to be very productive. ... I’ve already made good on one campaign promise, and pulled up as many signs as I can!” Pam Richardson lead competitors Nick Klufas and Anita Moeder for the District 3 City Council seat, but that seat will go to a runoff in November because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote. Incumbent School Board member Colleen Conklin beat competitor Jason Sands for the District 3 seat, while Maria Barbosa led in the four-way race for the District 5 seat. Just behind Barbosa, who had 28.16% of the vote, was Myra Middleton Valentine, who had 26.05%. That race will go to a runoff election between Barbosa and Middleton Valentine in November. Incumbent County Commissioner Charlie Ericksen beat challengers Ken Mazzie and Dan Potter for the Republican primary for the District 1 County Commission seat. Ericksen will face Democrat Jason DeLorenzo, currently a Palm Coast city councilman, in November. David Sullivan won the Republican primary for the County

Want to see how fast I can pull this gun out of my pocket? Please don’t. Fortunately, no one was injured, but an apparent case of showing off did result in a Palm Coast man being charged with the crime of discharging a firearm in public after he unintentionally shot into an occupied car on West Granada Boulevard in front of Walmart Aug. 9. On Aug. 9, an Ormond Beach woman, Sonia Bolles, called police after her car was shot as she was turning left onto Williamson Boulevard from westbound West Granada Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. The bullet went through the passenger door and into the center console. Her daughter was in the back seat of the Kia Sedona. The next day, detectives determined, by the bullet’s trajectory, that it came from the Walmart parking lot on a straight line into the door. They found the bullet after taking the console apart.
Calendar of
EVENTS
On Aug. 11, Grant Zimmerman, of Ormond Beach, came forward to police and said he met 38-year-old Ridley Lane resident Jay Estes at about 9:15 p.m. on the night of the shooting in the Walmart parking lot to sell him a pair of motorcycle boots. He had listed the boots on Craigslist. According to Zimmerman, after completing the sale, the two began talking. Estes, a selfemployed contractor, then took a revolver from his pocket to show Zimmerman. He removed rounds from the gun onto the driver seat of his car, apparently thinking the gun was empty. Estes then said he wanted to show Zimmerman how quickly he could get the gun out of his pocket because of its size. He told Zimmerman to “come at him like he was going to rob him,” but Zimmerman declined. Estes then took the gun out of his pocket, leveled it and pulled the trigger three times. On the third pull, the gun fired and the bullet went toward West Granada Boulevard. The two men looked at each
other in disbelief, the statement said, and then left the scene. Zimmerman said the firearm was not pointed at him, but the bullet went by him. Later that night, Estes texted the words “I’m sorry” to Zimmerman. On Aug. 23, Estes arrived at the Ormond Beach Police Department and then gave a sworn statement. He admitted to pointing the .38-caliber handgun toward West Granada Boulevard and accidentally firing a bullet that he did not know was in the gun. He said in the report that he did not remember asking the other man to “come at him.” There was an officer in the parking lot of Walmart at the time of the shooting. The suspect said he saw the officer, but did not tell him about the incident because he was hoping the bullet hit a tree. He went back the next day to look for it. The charge of discharging a firearm in public is a misdemeanor.

Human bones found at Hammock Dunes site
Two men hospitalized after stabbing
Workers found the bones Aug. 25 while laying a foundation at 45 Calle Del Sur.
An 18-year-old victim called 911 with a knife still stuck in his back.
JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR
Human bones found by construction workers laying a foundation at a beachfront Hammock Dunes property are at least 150 years old, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. “Based on this information, there is no relationship to any open case the FCSO is currently working. There is no foul play suspected,” a Sheriff’s Office news release issued Aug. 29 stated. Workers found the bones at about 12:20 p.m. Aug. 25 while laying a foundation at 45 Calle Del Sur, and called the Sheriff’s Office, prompting deputies and the medical examiner’s office to investigate. “We’re trying to get a good date on how old they are,” Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jim Troiano said. “We’re potentially looking at a historical site.” To find out more, the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies are working with the Gainesvillebased C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory, which can analyze the bones to determine age, sex, ethnicity and how long they were in the ground, Troiano said.

Workers found the bones while laying a foundation at 45 Calle Del Sur.
In the meantime, construction work at the site at 45 Calle Del Sur has stopped, and a deputy has been posted there to protect the location as investigators work to determine if it may have cultural significance. “This is not unusual, if you look at Florida and our history,” Troiano said. “There are artifacts and historical sites that are unearthed throughout the state. … We can find canoes, and artifacts and arrowheads and different pottery.”
An 18-year-old man called the Sheriff’s Office after midnight Aug. 29 saying that he’d been stabbed, and the ordeal wasn’t over: The knife was still lodged in his back, and he thought the young man who’d stabbed him was still in his house. The victim, Jonathan Cerdeira, called the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office at about 12:20 a.m., retreating into a bathroom of his home at 17 Felshire Lane to protect himself from more attacks, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. He described the alleged attacker to 911 dispatchers, and a Sheriff’s Office commander’s report said that he’d said the attacker was a friend. From inside the bathroom, Cerdeira gave dispatchers updates: He thought the attacker was still in the house, and he heard what he thought was the sound of someone jumping into the pool. A Sheriff’s Office corporal and a deputy who arrived at the house knocked on the door, and a shirtless man walked up. They told him to show his hands. A case report on the incident redacts his name.
“The male stepped outside the front door and was covered in blood on his entire chest area, neck, side of his face, and hands,” a deputy wrote in a case report. “The male also appeared to be soaking wet.” Deputies ordered him to the ground. The deputies didn’t know whether the blood was his own, or Cerdeira’s. As other deputies arrived, one entered the house to find Cerdeira — they could hear him yelling — and another deputy rolled over the blood-covered man at the door. That deputy saw “what appeared to be some sort of puncture wound to the middle of his throat which was oozing blood,” and a long laceration on his hand. The man “uttered several times that he wanted to kill himself,” a deputy wrote in the report. The case report does not specify how he got his injuries, and parts of it are redacted because the investigation is ongoing. Cerdeira told deputies that both men had been drinking. Paramedics and firefighters came to the scene and aided both men before taking them both to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. The case has been classified as an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, but no charges have yet been filed.

How to fix the Palm Harbor Golf Course Reduce fees to increase play at Palm Harbor Golf Course Dear Editor: The city will spend $215,000 to repair sand bunkers at Palm Harbor Golf Course, and not all residents are happy about the costs. At the risk of sounding ignorant, may I ask a question? Since the city is paying Kemper to “manage” this course, why are they not taking care of these things? The city loses a lot of money annually on the golf course, and the quick fix always suggested is to increase fees. My thinking is in the other direction. Let’s reduce fees to make this city-owned course more affordable and increase play and therefore increase the bottom line. They could offer incentives too: say a four- or 10-play card for a discount. Yes, we residents are fortunate and proud to live in a planned community that is kept clean and green. Two hundred fifteen thousand dollars isn’t much compared to that park overhaul at the cost of more than $3 million: Holland Park must have been on the list to be updated, but it was pretty nice the way it was. FRAN HEISER Palm Coast
Editor’s Note: You asked about Kemper, so I asked the city of Palm Coast for clarification. Here is the response from the city’s finance director, Chris Quinn: “Kemper is responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the golf course. These costs are paid for through user fees and supplemented with general tax dollars. Capital updates, such as bunker rehab, new greens, and new equipment are the responsibility of the city, no matter who is running the day-to-day operations.”
How to fix the Palm Harbor Golf Course Dear Editor: As a person with personal experience in golf course ownership and management, allow me to offer some observations regarding the ongoing deficit at the Palm Harbor Golf Course. First, the Palm Harbor facility is a very nice golf course. As a municipal course, it would rate in the top 10% I have played over the years. Considering the fact that play is down on many golf courses around the country, it’s probably time to change the Palm Harbor layout a little. It was stated the traps need over $200,000 of maintenance, and this type of work is required every seven years or so. Sand traps cost money every year and considerably more money in that seventh year. If you simply take the number of traps the course has and divide them into the cost for support, you will find the cost per trap to be quite high. Two things can be done: Eliminate a number of the sand traps, and make an additional number of them smaller. Smaller traps cost less to maintain. This is a municipal course, not a championship course.
should be thankful and appreciative of your neighbor who is willing to spend money for the common good. To put a tax burden on a neighbor who wants to do a good deed and also save some money is a ridiculous point of view. All the tax burden will do is slow down, or even worse kill an industry that would be providing sorely needed jobs. With this kind of thinking, we would still be using candles instead of electric lights. Your one-sided attack on the use of solar is really not a fair analysis. As an example of your unfairness, I point out that your large negative article is prominently displayed on page 6A while a more positive rebuttal is stuck way back on page 15A. And lastly, I take exception with your statement, “with every new law, there are always winners and losers.” The adoption of solar energy by all that can afford it is a benefit to all that inhabit this fragile planet, and any impediments, taxation or otherwise, is shortsighted and absurd. LAWRENCE A. SCHEFFLER Palm Coast Courtesy photo
Capital improvements to the bunkers at Palm Harbor Golf Course are the city’s responsibility.
Another easy target is the grass. Every acre costs money to mow. The varying lengths of grass dependent upon their purpose (greens, tees, fairways, rough) require different pieces of equipment and the dispatching of personnel to tend them. Stop mowing “everything.” Leave the areas around the tee boxes to grow some. Make it high rough, mowed rarely. It won’t slow play as very few players will be dribbling it off the tee box 50 yards and looking for the ball. Mow an access path to the box from the cart path allowing both golfers to get to the tee box and the mower to get there to cut it. I have no drawings for the teeing areas and don’t know how much ground we are talking about, but it would drop required equipment and payroll hours by dropping acreage. I disagree with those opinion writers who merely want to close the facility. I’m sorry, but it is a public facility, like the tennis courts, like the pool, like the public parks. I rarely use the parks, but they do cost money and add to the quality of life for those in the area. We do need to hold those that manage these facilities and our local government leaders accountable. If the deficit of the golf course were coming out of their pockets, I think they would have found ways to limit the expenses. As a separate comment, the City Council should be ashamed of themselves for allowing a public park to be closed and suffer cost overruns like the one on Florida Park Drive. There has been a lack of accountability regarding the contractor, city manager and City Council on all aspects of that disaster of a project. I’m sure, however, upon completion every single one of them will surround a ribbon
with large scissors and take credit for the work. ART MACQUEEN Palm Coast
Editor’s Note: According to city spokeswoman Cindi Lane: “The Holland Park project is not over budget. It’s about six months behind schedule, and we are charging the contractor $1,000/day for not bringing the project in on time. So the overall cost will actually be lower than what we anticipated. On the other hand, we are without the use of our park for much longer than we expected, and the city is not happy about that at all. “We are still hopeful the contractor will be able to complete the project. But the city is keeping its options open, as well. It’s possible we will end up firing the contractor and getting someone else to finish the job. If additional costs were required because of that, the city would go after those costs. The contract protects the city financially in this situation.”
Observer fails to look at the big picture with regard to solar energy Dear Editor: Your editorial on the issue of solar energy and Amendment 4 in particular is one of the most myopic, one-sided, negative assaults on the benefits that solar energy can provide to all of the population with its increased use. You totally ignore the looming specter of global warming! Maybe you are at odds with virtually every scientist on the planet? Yes, everyone is not able to afford solar. But because you are not able to afford it, you should not put up financial barriers, i.e., additional taxes, on your neighbor who has the wherewithal to do so. You
Gun buy-backs are worthless Dear Editor: When will these gun buyback programs end? When will people realize they are noneffective, feel-good measures and do absolutely nothing to prevent gun-related crime? Can anyone show their effectiveness? Have any of the surrendered guns been traced to determine if they were used in any crimes? The article in the Observer says a reported stolen firearm was turned in, and will be returned to its rightful owner, and as ridiculous as it may seem, assuming the person who handed it in is the person who stole it, he was “rewarded” for the theft of the firearm. Steal a gun, make a buck at a gun buy back. And a Japanese war relic was turned in: oh boy, I feel safer now that that is off the streets. The sawed-off shotguns, although illegal, by themselves don’t commit crimes — someone is behind them. Were they used in any crimes? And all these guns will be destroyed. Why? I say sell them and use the money for some good. Doing that would amount to a little something worthwhile coming out of this gun buy-back smoke-andmirror show. CARL MARCO Palm Coast
Editor’s Note: Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jim Troiano responded this way: “This was the first gun buy-back we have done in years at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Any time we can offer individuals to be able to turn guns in without any questions asked, it helps reduce the chances the guns are used in felony crimes. The money used to purchase the guns came from forfeiture funding, or money we took via court proceedings from those engaged in crimes.”

THIEVES STEAL STEEL FROM CONSTRUCTION SITE 10:30 a.m. Harbor View Drive and Heron Drive. Grand theft: Two men contacted the Sheriff’s Office after seeing a couple of men in a pickup truck drive up to a construction site, load the pickup with steel beams and then drive off, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The theft happened at about 10:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at the intersection of Harbor View Drive and Heron Drive, the witnesses told a deputy. The thieves, they said, were driving a black pickup with the license plate covered. One of the witnesses contacted the construction company. A construction worker, talking to a deputy, said he’d just gotten a call from a scrap yard that had been sold steel beams. The deputy told him to go there and meet with a deputy to ID them. The man did so: They were the stolen beams, and the scrap yard had a description of the two men, the truck and its tag number. Later the same day, around 3:30 p.m., three construction workers arriving at the site saw two men trying to tie a steel beam into a black pickup. One of the workers called 911 and all three tried to follow the truck, but it took off at high speed. Deputies stopped the truck, which had a stolen steel beam in the back, then arrested both men and charged them with two counts of grand theft.
WOMAN CHARGED AFTER USING COUNTERFEIT $50 BILL FOR FAST FOOD 11:31 a.m. First block of Old Kings Road N. Uttering forged bills: A woman went to the drive-through of a fast food restaurant and handed the cashier a $50 bill to pay for her food. But the cashier noticed that the bill looked strange, and when a manager checked it with a counterfeit detection pen, the bill turned out to be a fake, according to a Sheriff’s Office case report. The customer who’d tried to pay with it looked shaky and nervous, and told the cashier that she’d gotten the $50 from a gas station the previous night, the cashier later told a deputy. The cashier thought that was odd: She’d never asked the customer where she got the bill, or told her she thought it was fake. Restaurant staff called the Sheriff’s Office, and a deputy stopped the customer while she waited at the second drivethrough window. Speaking with a deputy who confirmed that the bill was a fake, the woman said she hadn’t gotten the $50 from the gas station, but had tried to use it there and been turned away by a clerk who thought it was fake. She also had another $50 like it. It also turned out to be counterfeit. She told the deputy she hadn’t tried to find out whether the bills were actually real or not. Deputies arrested her on a charge of uttering a false bill.

City of Palm Coast to dump Holland Park contractor, take over the work itself Renovations at Holland Park were supposed to end in March. JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR
The city of Palm Coast is kicking construction contractor Tumbleson White Construction Inc. out of Holland Park, and taking over renovations there itself. The contractor has fallen far behind schedule with work at the park, City Manager Jim Landon said in a City Council workshop Aug. 30: The initial end date was supposed to have been in March. Renovation work at Holland Park began in February 2014. “We’ve gone through the steps of giving this contractor plenty of opportunity to do this job,” Landon said. “Whether it’s just not capable, or not putting the resources, who knows, but it doesn’t matter to me anymore because it’s not doing the job.” As for goals for the project at this point, Landon said: “Goal No. 1 is we want to get it done. Goal No. 2 is we want to get this contractor, Tumbleson, off the site as quickly as possible.” The city will let Tumbleson White complete bits of the project that are currently underway, but will

then take over with city construction crews, Landon said. The third goal, Landon continued, is to make sure all subcontractors are paid, and the last goal is to say within budget. “We’re working towards making all those happen,” he said. The city put Gainesville-based Tumbleson White on notice weeks ago to put together a recov-
ery schedule to make up lost time, Landon said, and also put the bonding company on notice that if the work wasn’t done within that time frame, the city would take further action. Tumbleson White responded by putting together a schedule with a completion date of Aug. 12. A city of Palm Coast “Week In Review” document listed con-
struction at Holland Park as 78% complete as of Aug. 24. “I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t want another date,” Landon said, “So we’ve had our attorney draft a letter to the bonding company that says we’re taking over the project.” The city is also handling complaints from subcontractors who have said they haven’t been prop-

erly paid, Landon said. “We are working directly on making sure that they can get paid,” he said. “A lot of them are local contractors. These are people that their kids go to our schools, they’re on our sports teams — they rely on this kind of work to put food on the table. … So we’re getting involved in that.” Mayor Jon Netts agreed. “The city should back them, support them, do anything we can to see that they are being paid,” he said. And, he said, “Our residents have dealt with this delay long enough. But a little more delay, well, it’ s not the end of the world, but I want to make sure we’re under budget, I want to make sure Tumbleson is not walking away with unwarranted profit. ... They’re the ones at fault here, they’re the ones that need to feel a little bit of pain. Not our residents, not our budget, and absolutely not our local subcontractors.” Landon said he is “very confident” the city can finish the work without going over budget. The total approved expenditure for Holland Park renovations is about $4.7 million. The city has about $1.2 million in its budget that hasn’t been spent, and will use that to finish the project and pay subcontractors, Landon said. Meanwhile, the city is charging Tumbleson White $1,000 every day in liquidated damages, he said. “We’re putting all the resources we can to get this done,” Landon said. “We are going to try to get it open. We may even not even have all of it done, but if we can get it open, get certain things done, get kids playing on the playground, etc. … we can work on getting some other things done on the periphery.”

Local firefighter heads west to fight wildfires Flagler County firefighter heads west to fight wildfires A Flagler County firefighter will fly to Virginia Aug. 27 to battle wildfires in the western U.S. for three weeks, according to a Flagler County government news release. This is 31-year-old Ron Titus’ fourth trip to battle wildfires in California or Idaho. He’s been a Flagler County firefighter for almost six years, according to the news release. “I like being a paramedic and fighting structure fires, but wildfire is my thing,” Titus said in the news release. “I like the uncertainty of it. With a wildfire, you can think you have 30 variables of the fire figured out and 60% of the time you’re wrong – something is always going to change.” Flagler County Fire Chief Don Petito called Titus, a married father of two young girls, “one of our best wildland firefighters.” “The training we have provided him gives us the ability to send him,” Petito said. “We are very proud to have him represent us.” Titus enjoys being deployed – or the celebration when he returns home safely, according to the news release. “My girls are five days from being Irish twins,” he said of Blair and Mackenzie, according to the news release. “We made one after I returned from Washington

County may form stormwater districts Flagler County may create two stormwater assessment districts to help drainage systems in the Hammock, according to a Flagler County government news release. That would mean creating a new stormwater outfall — a place where the system discharges — and a new stormwater treatment facility and a new drainage collection system for the area north of Bay Drive to Washington Oaks State Park. In February 2014, the county adopted a stormwater improvement plan for the area and began moving forward toward implementation. The improvements are intended to minimize property damage and drainage hazards and improve the quality of runoff entering the Intracoastal and the Matanzas River. The County Commission will consider the issue at a Sept. 12 meeting. For more information, go to flaglercounty.org/malacompra, call 313-4073.
When a Palm Coast woman got a ride home from a concert with an unfamiliar man, her live-in boyfriend beat her up and put a wooden rifle stock — inoperable, but real looking — in her mouth and said, “I should blow you away,” the woman told deputies. The alleged incident happened Aug. 20 at the home of Charles Daniel Brentzel on Zenger Court in Palm Coast, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit. The woman called the 911 from a neighbor’s phone at about 5:50 a.m. She was “screaming that her boyfriend, later determined to be Charles Brentzel III, beat her up,” that she was covered in blood and didn’t know where it was coming from, and that Brentzel, 26, had put a gun in her mouth, according to the affidavit. A deputy who met her at the neighbor’s house wrote in the affidavit that he saw fresh swelling around her right eye, lacerations on both her knees and her right wrist and blood on her legs. She told the deputy she’d gotten home from a concert in Daytona Beach at about 4 a.m. after hitching a ride with a stranger. Brentzel was mad at her. She thought the reason was that she’d gotten a ride home from a man late at night. The couple argued, and he knocked a chair out from under her as tried to sit down, making her fall, she told the deputy. Then, “Brentzel grabbed her by the hair and dragged her on her knees to the front door,”

where he hit her across the face, smashed her face against the ground and told her to leave, she told a deputy. The woman walked out on the road and began walking away, but then turned back “for a reason she cannot explain,” according to the report. Brentzel found her on a futon on the porch. He came at her with a rifle, placed the muzzle in her mouth, and threatened to kill her, she told a deputy. That’s when she ran for the neighbor’s house. Brentzel denied pointing anything at the woman, and said he didn’t live with her. He said that when he heard banging on the door in the early morning, he thought there was a possible intruder. “Mr. Brentzel’s statement in reference to if he knew (the woman) changed several times,” a deputy wrote in the affidavit. A man who’d been visiting Brentzel’s home that night said that the woman lived with Brentzel and that he’d heard them arguing. A deputy checking the house wrote in the affidavit that there was blood all over the floor and a puddle of blood near the porch futon, and that Brentzel had a cut across his foot that was “bleeding excessively.” Deputies charged Brentzel with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of domestic battery.

Tourist Development Council plans budget increase Flagler County’s Tourist Development Council on Aug. 17 approved a $200,000 increase for the TDC’s upcoming budget, bringing the overall budget to a total of $1.6 million. Tourist Development Office Director Matt Dunn said the money will pay for an increase in ad buys — from $370,000 this year to a planned $490,000 next year — and a $20,000 increase in printing. Some of the publications the TDO prints will be distributed to official Florida welcome centers. The Chamber’s Fantastic Flagler magazine can not be distributed there because it contains real estate information, and the welcome centers do not distribute publications with real estate information, Dunn said, “So we’re going print a scaled-down version of Fantastic Flagler, basically the tourism pages of Fantastic Flagler will be scaled down to a 6-by-9 piece, and from there we will print those only to go in the welcome centers throughout the state.” The TDO is also moving its office from its current location at that Flagler County Chamber on State Road 100 to the nearby Airport Corporate Center, where its rent will be about double what it is now. “We’re more than doubling our space and we’re just over doubling our rent,” he said, “So that’s another significant increase.” The TDC’s budget is funded by bed taxes collected from stays at hotels, campgrounds and vacation rentals.

The new parking lot behind the Hammock Community Center was filled to capacity at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 25. The attraction was the dedication and ribbon cutting of the new pickleball courts, an addition that many have been waiting for. “I was driving down to Daytona Beach Shores to play,” said Sylvia Whitehouse, the gold medal winner at the Florida International Senior Games and State Championship in the women’s 50-54 doubles division. Whitehouse, Lee Davis, Mark Cohen and Bobby Caviness played a game to give the crowd of more than 50 residents of all ages an introduction to the game. After their match ended, Flagler County Commissioner Nate McLaughlin shed his shoes and took an impromptu lesson. “The only things you need for this sport is a racket and a pair of good all-court tennis shoes,” Whitehouse said, explaining that some tennis shoes mark up the courts.

Flagler County Commissioners Nate McLaughlin and Barbara Revels, pickleball champion Slyvia Whitehouse and Commissioner George Hanns cut the ribbon during the dedication ceremony for the new courts at the Hammock Community Center.
Flagler County’s General Services staff installed the parking lot and fencing. The total project cost was $57,905. “Each year money is set aside in all of the departments,” County Commission Chairman Barbara Revels said. “In the parks department, we have been repairing restroom that needed repair, and these courts.” The courts are open to everyone in the county. and is already looking forward to hosting tournaments. “I definitely want to bring a tournament here,” she said. “The U.S. Open pickleball tournaments were in Naples this year, and it brought in $5 million to the community.” Florida leads the nation in pickleball courts with 360 courts, followed by California, with 250, and Arizona, with 170. “I was a tennis player,” Whitehouse said. “I tried it once and hung up my tennis racket.”
The 84th-annual Convention of The Military Order of the Purple Heart and the 83rd National Convention of the Ladies Auxiliary of the MOPH have elected Palm Coast resident Hershel Gober, a combat wounded Vietnam veteran, as National Commander of the Order. During his second tour in Vietnam, Gober was leading Co C, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Division on a combat mission on March 11, 1969, when he was wounded by enemy fire. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Gober retired from the Army in 1978 as a major. In 1988, he was appointed director of the Arkansas Department of Veterans’ Affairs. In 1993, President Clinton appointed Gober as deputy secretary and acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. Since 2002, Gober has served as National Director of Legislative Affairs for the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Charles Nelson sits quietly at his computer inventorying items from the Florida Farm Bureau. But Charles isn’t a farmer: He’s a student in one of Andrew Medearis’ STEM classes at Buddy Taylor Middle School. Medearis said the program got a grant from the American Farm Bureau for material. The first class of the day is meeting in the wet lab, a special area designed for cooperative work — and on days like today, a place to assemble things like hydroponic growing containers. “The Flagship students picked out the chairs and tables, and colors for the room,” Medearis said. “Teachers can sign up to use the room and the high-tech equipment.” Giva Clavizzao sits around a table with three other students as they use a wall-mounted monitor to research agricultural data. The next table is also filled with students researching seeds, biofuel and growing conditions. “It’s a fun class because everyone gets to work together,” Giva said. The class has only been together since the beginning of the school year, but they have already started working inside the classroom and out — “out” being in the field behind the school, where switchgrass will be grown in two heights and used for biofuel, and raised potting boxes made from donated materials for the seeds for the Hope Community Garden in Bunnell. “They understand how and why something works,” Medearis said. “ I want to show them how much

it takes to make biofuel from the switch grass.” Medearis spent his summer at Penn State, coming home with three partnerships for his classes. The partnerships are: n APPLES: The Arctic Plant Phenology Learning through Engaged Science project. The project uses open-top chambers and combines Penn State Professor Dr. Eric Post’s more than 20 years of experience in Greenland with local classroom climate change projects. The APPLES project is a partnership with Penn State University, Penn State’s Center for Science and the Schools, The Polar Center, Fort Lewis College and UC Berkley. n NEWBio/BBEP: The NorthEast Woody/ Warm Season Biomass and BioEnergy & Bioproducts Education Program. This is the project in which the class will grow swtichgrass in partnership with Penn State, CSATS, and the Ernst Seed Company. “We will work very hard to get the switchgrass established this year with the hopes of being able to produce biodiesel or bioethanol as well as a bioproduct — moisture absorbing switchgrass pellets — soon,” Medearis said. The class won’t be forgetting its roots, and will continue to work with the HOPE Community Garden partnership and the Citizen Science Project with a potato fertilizer protocol and technology trial with UF and the Flagler County Extension Service. The potato project incorporated the BTMS FFA and 4H. Beachside, the students will begin a dune restoration project with other BTMS groups, Old Kings Elementary, Flagler Beach and Beverly Beach.

he Matanzas Pirates were 10 points away from defeat but turned the game around to beat crosstown rival the Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs 25-18, 20-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-11 on Thursday, Aug. 25, at FPC. After winning the second and third set, FPC led the Pirates 15-13 in the fourth set, but Matanzas rallied to take the lead and eventually win the set. Head coaches Dawn Moses (Matanzas) and Ashlee Dietrich (FPC) got their first crosstown rivalry experience, as both teams’ fans cheered, passion-

ately stomped the bleachers and chanted throughout the night for each point scored. “The fact that we were able to come back in the fourth set and win the fifth was critical, because we put a lot of young kids on the floor,” Moses said. “So, I was very happy. I thought we played well on defense, and I love to see them play scrappy and go for the ball.” For junior Jaelyn Lawrence, it wasn’t her first experience in the rivalry, but it was her first time playing as FPC’s opponent. “It was kind of weird being back in my old gym,” the new Lady Pirate said, “but it felt nice seeing my old teammates, and it felt even better beating them.”

o, Mr. or Ms. StudentAthlete, you’re off to what you might call a “bad start”? Let me help you out. The first game of the season has never prevented teams from reaching or achieving their ultimate goal. Remember the offseason when you’d wake up every day and go to practice? When you’d work on the same drills and talk about the same formations with your coaches over and over, yearning for game days? Well, you spent those months in preparation for a full season, not for two or three games — no matter how important they may seem. Have you considered that, right now, your team is the worst it’s going to be this season? You have yet to create chemistry with all of your teammates. You will surpass your current weightlifting max. Runners, you will outrun your current time. Swimmers, you will shave more seconds from your lap times. I’m pretty sure your coaches have already said — and will continue to say — that one of the team goals is to get better each week. And yes, I get it. You played against or raced your rival, and you really wanted to beat them. I wouldn’t expect anything else from passionate studentathletes. You spent the last few weeks talking trash, preparing for that team, hoping you’d get to celebrate a season-opening win. So, it’s OK if you feel disappointed. But, for the sake of your future performance, your team’s mentality and the remaining games, leave that game in that week — last week. Your next opponent doesn’t care that you lost or won your previous game. If you did lose, your next opponent only wants your misery to continue. And, in case you’re still not convinced, think about this: Seabreeze football reached the playoffs in 2014 after starting the season 1-5, and Matanzas football failed to reach the playoffs after beginning last season 6-0. There’s a reason why you still have a practice schedule this week: You are still alive.

Matanzas scores two touchdowns in the second quarter and holds on for the victory at home. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR
T
hey hated that everyone considered their first crosstown win a fluke. That talk is officially over, now that the Matanzas Pirates (1-0) beat the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs (0-1) 14-8 on Friday, Aug. 26, at Matanzas to win the county championship for a second consecutive season. In his celebration speech to his team, head coach Robert Ripley began by saying, “I told you it would be a dog fight but a pirate celebration.” “We delivered tonight,” Ripley said. “We put on a show for our hometown fans. That’s what we wanted to do. It’s almost unrecognizable from the place I arrived to — from the weight room, to the decals, to the room screen, to the press box, to the flags, to our helmets, to our process, to our practices, to our staff. It’s been a process, and I’m so thankful these kids didn’t quit and didn’t get discouraged.” The Pirates controlled until the last five minutes. After both teams went scoreless in the first quarter, Matanzas exploded on offense and defense. Quarterback Mackenzy Wagner connected with Devin Mathews to put the Pirates at FPC’s twoyard line, and Philip Moultrie finished the drive with a touchdown

run. The extra point put Matanzas up 7-0. After forcing a punt, Moultrie broke down the sideline for a 55-yard run before being brought down at the 5-yard line. Wagner kept the ball and scored on the next play. Hannah Hile kicked the extra point to put the Pirates up 14-0 at halftime. The Bulldogs used a downed punt to pick up momentum, when they forced a safety to get two points and the ball back. But, when they attempted a red zone pass, Cory Steward picked off Thomas to end the drive. In the fourth quarter, after both teams couldn’t move the ball, FPC capitalized on three penalties that put the Bulldogs near the Pirates’ 30-yard line with less than six minutes to play. After Anfernee Brown took a reception to the one-yard line, Que’Shaun Byrd finished the drive, but the extra point was missed. The Bulldogs were given a final shot to score at the end of the game but were unable to record a first down. “I kind of knew we were going to win; we practiced really well this week,” Moultrie said. “But, those boys definitely gave us a dog fight. It was a really good game.” “This was the stamp for our win last year,” Wagner said. “This proved it wasn’t a fluke. We have the better program, we have the better heart, and it shows. Now, we gotta keep playing hard, like we got nothing to lose. Every game has to be an FPC game from here on out.” One of the first things Ripley did when he got to Matanzas was put up a sign that read: “Those who stay will be champions.” Now they’re two-time county champs, and they won the conference title last year. Ripley says his Pirates are confident with the rest of their schedule and hopes to achieve a playoff spot this season. “These kids are hungry to check that last box,” he said.

this rivalry. After losing big to Melbourne Central, the Green Wave will look to take its frustration out on Warner, for the third time in a row. Quarterback Josh Spencer and Ryan Atkins will team up for a couple of touchdowns, and the Lopez will get its season on the right track.
Flagler Palm Coast at Clay
Mainland vs. Bartram Trail
Clay wins 24-10. The Bulldogs shocked the Blue Devils last season, getting past them 7-0. This year will prove different. Clay’s running back Colin Wilson will have a big game, finding open holes, while Que’Shaun Byrd will have to create his own lanes. The Blue Devils will wear down the Bulldogs and get their first win of the season.
Father Lopez at Warner Christian
Mainland wins 41-24. The Bucs shut out rival DeLand 35-0 in the opener, sending a huge statement. Traveling to St. Johns to face Class 7A eighthranked Bartram Trail Bears, they will not have as easy of a game, when they won 56-24. The Bears’ quarterback Joey Gatewood will have Bartram Trail in the game throughout the first half, but Mainland will pull away.

Matanzas vs. Atlantic Matanzas wins 24-16. Throughout their season opener against FPC, the Pirates reminded me of my wrongful prediction. This week, they host the Sharks, whom they beat 41-2 last season. That won’t happen this year. The Sharks are a totally different team this year. Although they will get win No. 2, Matanzas will have to play just as hard as last week to do so.
Seabreeze vs. DeLand DeLand wins 27-7. Both teams were shut down in their openers, so both Seabreeze and DeLand will be looking to get a win. The Sandcrabs have struggled in the last several years against all teams, while DeLand, which has talent, seems to play only good teams. DeLand will score enough for a big win.

Autumn prepares her grass-fed steaks in olive oil.

How Autumn changed her life Autumn Lautar has independently transformed her life with the Paleo diet. JEFF DAWSEY STAFF WRITER

AUTUMN’S PAST CHRISTMAS LISTS
In the last four years, Autumn has not asked for clothes, shoes, makeup or anything else teenage girls often ask for. Instead, she’s requested a zoodle machine, a food processor, cook books and a Ninja blender. This year, she wants her own pots and pans and a Kitchen Aid mixer.
nside the Lautars’ kitchen on a Tuesday night, Autumn Lautar — an 18-year-old student who is autistic and mentally functions at half her age — prepares a meal that sounds delicious: steak and potatoes, a salad and a waffle. But here’s the catch: Nothing except the salad is “normal.” The steak is organic, grass-fed beef, and the potatoes are sweet potatoes. The waffle is made from plantains, and the noodles are zucchini. Welcome to Autumn’s new lifestyle — the Paleo diet. Growing up around her siblings, Autumn ate normal food during her elementary years. Because of her food allergies, she couldn’t process everything, causing her to put on an abnormal amount of weight – 266 pounds. “She would often experience really bad heart palpitations and sweat a lot,” said Ann Lautar, her mother. “She underwent every diagnostic for her heart, but the doctors couldn’t figure out why she was sick.” When she was 14 years old, a doctor at Florida Hospital Flagler proposed Autumn take up the Paleo diet, and he also suggested she look into the “Dr. Oz Show”
“She didn’t do anything else except eat differently. The amount of food she can eat without gaining weight is impressive.” ANN LAUTAR, Autumn’s mother, on Autmun’s Paleo diet
for health tips. Watching the show, she began vigorously researching Paleo, learning how to cook healthier meals all on her own. But, three months into her new lifestyle, Autumn became depressed. Maintaining her diet and preparing all of the meals grew tiresome, and the food didn’t taste very good. When she considered giving up, she found motivation from Justin Bieber’s “Believe” song, and continued her nutritious journey. She became a faithful “Belieber,” flooding her room with all of her Bieber memorabilia, including a 6-foot cardboard cutout that often startled her mom. In less than a year, Autumn dropped from 266 pounds to 152. “She didn’t do anything else except eat differently,” Ann said. “The amount of food she can eat without gaining weight is impressive, because she can eat.” “Normally, she functions on a fifth-grade level,” said Kevin Lautar, her dad, “but, in this area, she’s comparable to doctorate level in many ways.” Not only has her health improved, but Ann believes Paleo has helped Autumn’s social skills. She went from withdrawn, lethargic and depressed to wanting to meet people and being able to attend church without her parents. “She’s more into trying new things and having people over,” Ann added. “We couldn’t have done an interview in the past; it would have very much upset her.” Nowadays, Autumn owns the kitchen. She uses her $120 biweekly budget to buy all of her necessary groceries every Thursday. Then on Saturday, she diligently prepares enough to last for 13 days. Autumn has given up trying to entice her family to like her diet. To them, most of the food is tart and smells bad – especially kale chips. But, Ann and Kevin both said, she makes a delicious sweet potato casserole that she doesn’t allow anyone to eat on most occasions. “It’s great that she’s able to do the grocery shopping,” her mother said. “We still have to work constantly on the budget, but it makes me feel good that she can actually prepare meals and take care of her allergies as well as her health.” “She has excelled in ways that are truly remarkable, showing independence and growth,” Kevin added. “She has gained confidence in this area of her life, which has helped her in other areas as well.”

Sleeping with pets takes patience and tolerance — at least on my side of the bed.
T
here are times when I have this vibrating sensation on the top of my head when I am asleep. There’s no pain, but it wakes me up. The first time I felt and heard it in the middle of the night, the thought that I was having a seizure of some sort flitted across my semiconscious mind. As though putting pressure on the top of my head would be some sort of cure, I reached up and pressed down on a soft clump of hair at the top of my head — but it wasn’t my hair, but that of Samantha, our cat, who was apparently so happy with her lot in life at that moment that she was purring away. So now the question is, “Is
Stock photo
Samantha waiting for an opportunity to suffocate me and take her place on the plump pillow, or is there another reason for this nocturnal behavior?” Typing the words “Cats sleeping on heads” into Google brings up an impressive number of articles: Samantha is just doing the sleeping trend for felines these days. Most of the articles agreed that the main reason cats do this is for warmth. As we’ve all been told: Wear a hat in the winter, because body heat escapes from the head. According to Marilyn Krieger, a certified cat behavior consul-
tant and proprietor of the Cat Coach in Redwood City, California, “A cat’s average body temperature is 102 degrees F, and they need to maintain heat for proper basal metabolism, so seeking an external heat source allows the body to not have to work as hard to stay warm while sleeping.” Well, if sleeping on my head keeps Samantha from working hard while she sleeps, then it must be done: After all, she works so hard sleeping all over the house during the day without my head as her recharging station that she must be exhausted by the time I lay my
head on the pillow. Another theory is that cats sleep on people’s heads to avoid being kicked by a restless sleeper. I suspect that in Samantha’s case, she is avoiding our two dogs, Kodi and Buddy, who are strategically positioned on the bed as well. (Did I ever mention that I once didn’t allow pets on the bed?) I guess the only other question I have left is: “Why are they all only on my side of the bed?” Guess it’s time to go back to Google and ask.

Twenty-three states will be featured throughout the year. The children will learn airport identification codes. These codes are the learning stations. The MCO (Orlando) station is the writing station, JAX (Jacksonville) is for reading. Emling chose Florida as the first state to learn about and to give the students ideas of what they
could do in their presentations. Under the supervision of momvolunteer Amanda McGovern, the students painted the shape of the state on canvass while they enjoyed fresh Florida orange juice. At least one student appreciatd the juice: Kennedi Cooper said, “Ahhh, paradise.” Jack Rossheim will introduce the next state, South Carolina. Jack’s parents both attended Clemson, and don’t be surprised if a famous tiger is seen walking the halls. “I want to make the states come alive,” Emling said. “During the election, the students will fly to the nation’s capital to vote. We will set up the classroom for a mock election and invite the other students to cast their ballots.” Actual letters will be written to the class’ pen pals in Georgia. Georgia students about Florida, Emling said some good, old fashioned pen pal letters would be exchanged. Another special partnership the class has is with the Daytona Beach Airport. On the first day of school, Jay Cassens, business development and marketing director for the airport, made sure there were bags of airport goodies, from T-shirts in the shape of airplanes to luggage tags on the children’s desks. Her classroom is a bit smaller than the one she had last year, but that hasn’t stopped Emling from figuring out a way to transform the area into an airplane cabin, complete with flight attendants and “in-flight” snacks. “I want them to learn a little bit about our culture. Some of the children have never been on a plane,” Emling said.

In addition to homes, Vanacore is also in the storage business. The brothers also own Stor-It Self Storage in Ormond Beach and are near completion of a 50,000-square-foot facility in Flagler County. “That’s what got us through the slow times,” Todd Vanacore said.

From building many, many “tree forts” together as kids, the brothers have become one of the area’s premier builders. Asked how two brothers worked together over the years, at first Scott Vanacore said, with a smile “a lot of patience.” He said they have a lot of mutual respect. The day-to-day duties are not divided; they both do “whatever it takes” to get the work done. Call 672-8285 or visit vanacorehomes.com.
Flagler County’s Department of Economic Opportunity rolled out a new talent recruitment website, www.youcaninflaglercounty.com, last week. Director Helga van Eckert said the site provides growing companies assistance with their talent recruitment efforts, but it is not a “classified ad” website. “The site is a resource for anyone interested in living here, working here or just learning more about the county and our region,” van Eckert said.
Sixteen permits for single-family homes Of the sixteen single-family homes permitted last week in Palm Coast, the most expensive was a $431,000 home at 2 Cole Place, by Seagate. One duplex was also permitted last week: a $293,000 building by Palm Coast Construction at 43 Providence Lane.

When a home is built, it has a ripple effect throughout the community. From the subcontractors who build it, to the real estate agents who sell it and the furniture store that eventually furnishes it, the home industry impacts a lot of people, including the home buyers. This was evident Aug. 24 as more than 200 people attended the 25th-anniversary party of Vanacore Homes, which coincided with the unveiling of their new golf duplex villas, called Scottsmoor, in the Halifax Plantation Communities. Vanacore Homes has built nearly 2,500 homes and town homes throughout Volusia and Flagler counties. They have a staff of 15 people, four of which have worked at the company for 12 years.
