Eyes on the road: Keeping a driver’s license is tougher for teens

Jacob, a freshman at Flagler Palm Coast High School, wasn’t drunk, nor had he been driving: He doesn’t even have his learner’s permit. Jacob was in the Learning Commons Center at the high school wearing DUI goggles as part of a DMV event put on by Flagler Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston.

The goggles simulate what vision, balance and reaction time would be for someone with a .08-.11 blood alcohol level — two drinks or less.

“The kids have really paid attention,” Johnston said. “Most of them have really been into it.”

Many things have changed since most of the students’ parents, or even older brothers and sisters, have gotten their licenses.

Requirements outside of driving habits on the road can determine whether a teen is able to keep his or her license.

“You can lose your privilege to drive if you are not attending school, or an officer catches an underage student smoking,” DMV employee Dave Hern said. “If you aren’t in school, or getting your GED or high school equivalency, you have to wait until you are 18.”

Hern said many students are waiting until they are 17 or 18 to get their licenses.

“I don’t know why, but we are seeing a trend in students waiting to get their permits,” he said.

The event at FPC put on by the Tax Collector’s Office targeted high school freshmen, some of whom are just old enough to be eligible for learner’s permits.

Dakotah Marshall arrived at the second session early, and took the opportunity to have a one-onone with Johnston about successfully taking the test. Johnston had a table full of books and learning tools, and online resources.

“You can take the test in the office or online,” she said.

Johnston and her staff brought a wheel of questions that students would find on the driving test.

Those who got the right answers won a prize.

There are a number of infractions that can cause you to lose your license or have your driving privileges restricted. The following are of particular interest to teen drivers: n If you get a moving traffic conviction while you have a learner’s license, the one-year period you are required to hold your learner’s license will be extended for one year from the date of the conviction, or until you are 18, whichever happens first. n If you get six points on your driving record within a 12 month period, your driving privileges are automatically restricted to business purposes only for 12 months or until you are 18, whichever happens first. If you get addition-

al points during this restricted period, the restriction is extended 90 days for each additional point. n If you have a blood alcohol level of .02% or more (for those under age 21), an administrative suspension of six months will result. n If you are truant in your school attendance, your driving privilege is suspended until you provide proof you have attended school for 30 consecutive days. n Your driving privileges can be affected if you are convicted for possession of tobacco or nicotine products (applies to those under age 18).

Six boys tied to threat at FPC The boys have been banned from the campus as detectives investigate.

Six boys at Flagler Palm Coast High School were tied to a “detailed plan to conduct a coordinated plot” against the school Sept. 7.

Detectives are still trying to find out whether the students were serious about the plot, but the six have been placed on a fiveday “administrative excusal” — banned from campus, but with excused absences — while detectives investigate.

The school district will coordinate with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office to determine whether any of them will be able to return to school after the five day period is up if the investigation is still ongoing by that point.

None has yet been charged with a crime, although charges are possible, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said the morning of Sept. 8 that it appeared the students may not have been serious about the threat.

“This really sounds like students who were goofing around, but we are being very thorough and making sure that there’s not a serious threat,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Laura Williams said.

The investigation began in the late morning Sept. 7 when an emailed bomb threat was sent to Bunnell Elementary School.

“It was done on a student email account, and they quickly found who that student was and traced that student to FPC, and it unraveled from there,” Flagler Schools spokesman Jason Wheeler said.

The investigation uncovered late in the afternoon, but before high schoolers were released from classes for the day, that five more boys were involved in a plot against the high school. The boys were questioned at school and released to their parents, with a five-day administrative excusal.

By the evening of Sept. 8, detectives had “confirmed the bomb threat made yesterday via a FPC student’s email account was a hoax and was not credible,” according to the Sheriff’s Office news release. They were still investigating the plot against FPC. No weapons were found at the FPC campus, and the school district did not raise the threat level at the school or inform other students’ parents of the threat.

“The administrators worked to determine who was involved, and determined that there was no current credible threat … so there was no reason to,” Wheeler said.

Additional deputies were sent out to the high school late in the afternoon, arriving at about 3:30 p.m.

Detectives confiscated the boys’ school-issued laptops and are conducting an investigation, but some information from the students’ computers had been deleted, Williams said, necessitating computer forensic work.

A Sheriff’s Office case report on the threat lists seven boys, not six. The seventh boy on the case report, Wheeler said, is not a current student and may now live out of state.

Of the seven boys listed in the case report, six were 14 years old, and one was 15.

Wheeler and Williams did not know whether the boys have been in trouble at school in the past.

No additional school resource officers were assigned to FPC the day after the threat.

Ronald Reagan Republican Assembly of Flagler County disbands The local group’s dissolution follows the disbanding of the disbanding of the Ronald Reagan Republican Assemblies of Florida.

hree buildings at the old Players Club tennis property, on Palm Harbor Parkway just south of European Village, are being demolished.

The 5,271-square-foot club house, built in 1990, and buildings around the pool area are all coming down.

Palm Coast city staff approved a demolition order for the site on July 27, according to city records.

Environmental Site Services Inc., the Bunnell-based firm that was also hired to demolish the old ITT Corporate 1 building, is doing the work. The job value listed on the permit is $27,000.

The Players Club closed in 2006, and has since drawn complaints from city code enforcement staff and the ire of the City Council members, who wanted the overgrown property cleaned up.

It opened in 1986 with 16 courts, and in 1987 was voted

“Court of the Year” by Tennis Industry Magazine. The property has been owned by holding company Mandela Holdings, LLC, since 2007.

The Flagler County Property Appraiser’s website shows the 13.4-acre property as having a 2016 preliminary land value of $672,100, a building value of $1 and an extra feature value of $1, for a total just market value of $672,102. Its just market value in 2006 — the year it closed — was $2,877,450, according to the Property Appraiser’s office.

The Ronald Reagan Republican Assembly of Flagler County has officially shut down.

The local Assembly’s dissolution is a response to the disbanding of the Ronald Reagan Republican Assemblies of Florida, under which the Flagler County group was chartered.

The Ronald Reagan Assembly of Flagler County donated the $2,000 remaining in its treasury to the Flagler County School District’s Air Force Junior ROTC program at Flagler Palm Coast High School during a School Board meeting Sept. 6. The money will be used to buy new Airman Battle Dress Uniforms for cadets.

During its active years, the Ronald Reagan Assembly of Flagler County helped get a number of candidates elected to local office, backing, among others, current School Board member Janet McDonald and current Palm Coast City Councilman Steve Nobile.

Former Republican Executive Committee of Flagler County president Anne-Marie Schaffer was a Ronald Reagan Assembly of Flagler County member, and the group backed her unsuccessful run for a Palm Coast City Council seat in 2014.

The group also supported bids for office on the part of two men who have repeatedly initiated various complaints against local officials: Dennis McDonald and Mark Richter.

A message attributed to Ronald Reagan Republican Assembly of Flagler County President Mike McElroy on the Flagler County Tea Party’s webpage notified visitors of the Sept. 6 donation to the ROTC program, and encouraged members to consider joining the local Tea Party. McElroy did not reply to the Palm Coast Observer’s requests for comment.

Impromptu garage sale: epic sale or epic fail?

I

t was almost eerie: We had just been making initial plans for having a garage sale, and then, on Saturday morning, I saw that I was surrounded. Both of my neighbors, one to the left and one to the right, were having garage sales at the same time.

I pointed out the irony of this to one of the neighbors, saying that I was also planning to have a garage sale in a few weeks, and she told me, “Why don’t you pull your stuff out into your driveway and see what happens? People are walking by anyway. Why not?”

Hmm. My wife, Hailey, was out for the morning, and when I called her to propose this idea, she counseled me against it. “It’ll probably be a waste of time,” she said. “But if you want to try … ” I imagined the cash flowing. I imagined people buying everything we set out, forcing me to run through the house in search of more inventory.

I imagined Hailey returning home to see a decluttered house and a pile of cash on the counter.

“Let’s do it!” I told my kids.

So I started barking orders.

“Jackson! Grant! Bring that coffee table out to the driveway!” My sons, 12 and 10 years old, hopped to it, knowing they would get a cut of the earnings.

I hauled out some baby

items: musical mats and a fluffy basinet-type thing.

Then we waited. A couple of cars stopped and glanced at our offerings, which amounted to about seven things. I plucked a weed from a crack in the driveway.

Ellie, 6, still in her pajamas, said, “I’m bored.”

Kennedy, who will be 2 years old in a couple of months, saw the two-person stroller and tried to climb into it.

We hadn’t used it in several months, and so Kennedy probably had no memory of it, but now, of course, she wanted it.

When I tried to take her out of the stroller, she started crying.

“No one’s going to buy this if you’re sitting in it,” I said.

Ellie said, “Why are no customers coming?”

Jackson, the wise older brother, looked at our neighbors’ driveways, which were full of tables, clothing racks, furniture. He said, “Because other people’s garage sales actually look amazing.”

We waited for a while longer, the four kids and I. It was getting hot outside. It appeared that we were not going to be successful in our venture.

We started cleaning it up and bring everything back in.

Hailey got home at around lunchtime, and Kennedy was hungry. “Why didn’t you feed her yet?” she asked.

“We were having a garage sale!” I said.

Hailey cocked her head to one side in an expression that seemed to be a mixture of, “I wouldn’t exactly call that a garage sale,” and “Told you so.”

So, it’s true. My impromptu garage sale was indeed a bust.

But there is a silver lining: We filled in a few more empty spaces in our house by buying three pieces of furniture and some wall hangings from our neighbor’s garage sale.

Sheriff’s race: Will Lamb’s supporters follow Staly in November?

You might expect that Republican sheriff candidate Rick Staly will have an easy path to a win in the November election, considering Republicans outvoted Democrats by a margin of almost 2-1 in the Aug. 30 primary. Even with five competitors, Staly still earned 4,317 votes, while Democratic winner Larry Jones only got 3,604 votes with just one competitor. Is it over already?

Let’s imagine a scenario in which all the people who voted for Staly in the primary vote for him again in November. That leaves more than 7,000 Republican votes up for grabs, not to mention independents or others who didn’t vote in the primary but will in the general. And if Jones can unite the Democrats, anything is possible.

LAMB STAYS NEUTRAL

John Lamb, who finished second in the Republican primary with 3,815 votes, has decided not to endorse either Staly or Jones in the general election, although he did say he already knows for whom he will vote.

As far as the rest of his support-

ers, Lamb said, “It’s a mixed bag.”

He imagines some will vote along the party lines, but others “are going to vote based on the campaign that I ran and the campaign that I ran against, and they may vote against that candidate.”

Staly, who raised $121,180 for his campaign, including $50,000 of his own money, spent some of that money on robocalls and mailers that criticized Lamb. That angered some voters, who felt the campaign was overly negative.

Staly defended the ads, saying they were based on fact, and he said on WZNF’s election coverage that he had documentation to back up the claims made in the ads.

That explanation wasn’t enough for someone like Pat Cody to change her loyalty. Cody, a longtime Republican who was also recently elected to be a Flagler County Republican Executive committeewoman representing Precinct 3, posted on Facebook that although she was a Lamb supporter in the primary, she will not be supporting Staly in November.

“You can mark it in your book as maybe never hearing these words from my mouth again. …

In November, I’m voting Democrat for sheriff of Flagler County,” she wrote. “I will not support a Republican candidate who has run an election with malice and vengefulness.”

She added that she has known

SHERIFF CANDIDATES ‘NEED TO GROW UP’

Bob Updegrave feels that a resident like Cody is entitled to support whomever she wants, but if a candidate won’t support the winner of his own party’s primary, “it’s simply wrong.”

Not speaking in his role as a committeeman for the Flagler County Republican Executive Committee but just as a resident, Updegrave said the negative ads shouldn’t be a reason to withhold support for Staly, who won the primary fair and square.

“The negative political electioneering is part of the process, and whether you agree with a candidate or a candidate’s consultant for doing it or not, it’s part of politics,” he said. “And if you’re going to be in it, especially at the sheriff level, come on. A sheriff can’t take some negative advertising? … These are big guys that carry guns. These are tough people.

They need to grow up.”

DATES TO REMEMBER Early voting begins Oct. 24 in Flagler County. The Palm Coast Observer’s election guide will be published Oct. 13, with endorsements on Oct. 20.

POLLING LEAVES STALY FEELING CONFIDENT

Staly, meanwhile, says he has done some polling since the Aug. 30 primary and is feeling confident.

“Our plan is to run a campaign that is based on qualifications, experience and vision,” Staly said.

“Primary campaigns and general election campaigns tend to be very different. Yes, we mailed some opposition mail in the past.

I don’t anticipate having to do that this time.”

As far as former Lamb supporters such as Cody who plan to vote against their party, Staly believes they’re in the minority. He has been contacted by other Lamb supporters who have said something to this effect: “You weren’t my first choice, but you’re my guy now.”

Woman, 24, reports sexual assault in Palm Coast A 24-year-old woman reported to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Sept. 6 that she had been sexually assaulted in Palm Coast.

The woman is from out of state, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Laura Williams said. “We are interviewing her and trying to find the suspect,” Williams said.

The woman told deputies that she was “accosted by an unknown black male at a motel in Daytona Beach and then transported to Palm Coast and again sexually assaulted,” according to a Sheriff’s Office commander’s report. “The victim at some point feigned an illness and the suspect transported her to (Florida Hospital Flagler).

The victim reported the assault to the nurses on duty and the suspect left the hospital.”

The Sheriff’s Office case report on the incident is almost entirely redacted. The report lists a time range for the incident as 10 p.m. Sept. 5 to 9:34 a.m.

Sept. 6, but notes that the crime was reported at 9:33 a.m. Sept 6 and that a deputy responded to the hospital at 9:35 a.m. Sept. 6.

A 23-year-old Ormond Beach man showed up at Florida Hospital Flagler with a gunshot wound Sept. 6, saying he’d been robbed, then shot.

old girlfriend gave law enforcement officers such contradictory and muddled stories that both a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Flagler Beach Police Department officer wrote in separate reports that the wounded man may have accidentally shot himself. The wounded man had himself been arrested multiple times in Volusia County on gun-related charges, including carrying a concealed handgun, possession of a weapon on school property and aggravated assault with a firearm.

A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to the hospital at about 11:08 p.m.

Sept. 6, and a A Flagler Beach police officer was dispatched to the hospital at 12:10 a.m. Sept. 7.

The man and his girlfriend at various times told them that the robbery had been on Oceanshore Boulevard in Flagler Beach, or on Belle Terre Parkway in Palm Coast; by one man, or by two.

“Deputies pointed out to both of them that they had completely different accounts of the robbery,” the deputy wrote in a case report. “The angle the suspect was shot is not consistent with the suspect directly facing him.”

The Flagler Beach police officer noted that the man was intoxicated and was “partially incoherent and very disoriented.

“The wound appeared to have been an accidental self-inflicted gunshot or gunshot from the unknown (man) at very close proximity,” the Flagler Beach officer wrote.“Unknown if (the victim) was indeed shot by one of the (men) or if he accidentally shot himself.”

School Board members Janet McDonald and Colleen Conklin thought the process used to organize the event — with board members left in the dark until a local business complained — was improper.

Conklin, who said she was “greatly concerned” about the event and the process that led to it, noted that School Board policy bars subleasing but doesn’t define the word. The board agreed to discuss revisions to the policy during a future workshop.

The Flagler County School Board will consider changing its policy on facility usage after a car and boat show — which was hosted at Flagler Palm Coast High School and raised $5,000 for the Future Problem Solvers program — upset a local business and concerned board members who said they only heard about the event after a contract was signed.

The agreement between Flagler Broadcasting, LLC and the School District says the Problem Solvers would receive 20% of gross advertising sales generated by the Sept. 10-11 event at FPC, and that Flagler Broadcasting would secure vendors.

That ended up being Volusia County-based car dealership Ritchey Auto. School Board member Andy Dance, who’s long been a champion of the Problem Solvers, aided the effort to bring in the event and said that the intent was to invite local dealers to participate. But Tommy Gibbs of Tom Gibbs Chevrolet learned of the event after Ritchey Auto had secured all the slots, and complained in an email to the School Board, writing, “It has come to my

efore the morning sun has burned the dew from the grass, a big man in jeans and a fishing shirt trudges out to a patch of weedy growth — out where it’s just moist enough for the ground to squish beneath his camouflage wading boots — and he stands motionless, waiting for the mosquitoes to find him.

He lets the seconds pass, silently: One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi …

One finds him. He doesn’t swat it.

Four Mississippi, five Mississippi …

By the time 60 Mississippis have passed, only two mosquitoes found East Flagler Mosquito Control District technician Lou Sabatini at this mosquito trap site.

That’s pretty good.

“This year it’s been hardly anything, it’s been so dry,” said Sabatini, 55. Spiring this year was worse: One day, he counted 26 or 27 while feeding the Mosquito Control District’s sentinel chickens.

The mosquito landing counts are a daily routine for Sabatini.

Every workday morning, Sabatini and the other techs divide the district’s 40-some trap sites spread across the county between then, collecting the traps and counting the number of mosquito landings over the course of a minute.

Sabatini, who retired from a career with New York State Electric and Gas and started working with the district as a sprayer, calls the Mosquito Control District the best place he’s ever worked.

“You’re out in the elements, which I love to be,” he said. “You get to meet people all over the place. I haven’t found a drawback yet.”

Not even getting bitten, he said.

“My only fear is reaching down and grabbing a snake.” He’s seen rattlesnakes and water moccasins on his routes. “I even enjoy working at night when we spray. … I’ve seen big bobcats. I’ve heard panthers — you know how they cry out? — out on the islands.”

DID YOU KNOW? SEXING SKEETERS Male mosquitos and female mosquitos have different looking heads, and you can tell them apart by sight. The males look like they have a “mustache” — bottle-brush looking, hair-lined antennae protruding from either side of the face. Females also have antennae, but their antennae are not thickly lined with hair, so they’re not as noticeable. The extra hairs on the males’ antennae are used for hearing the wingbeats of female mosquitos. Male mosquitoes use it to tell how nearby other mosquitoes are, whether they’re male or female and what species they are. Mosquitoes’ wings beat

their bows pointed out toward open water, into the incoming tide. Nice day for reds, Smith said.

Card, who flew Army helicopter gunships after studying aviation technology at Embry-Riddle, agreed.

Smith, an aerial inspector for the district, likes to get his boots wet out in the marsh country. A bit later, after Card lowered the copter onto a spongy patch or wiregrass near the Matanzas River, he got his chance.

Smith and Card had noted the spot from the air: A stretch of shin-deep, stagnant dun-colored water cut off from the flowing body of the river looked like ideal mosquito egg habitat. It warranted a close-up check.

Smith hopped out of the copter, carrying a dipping tool and a glass jar. He dipped into the water,

300-600 times per second. For comparison: American hummingbirds beat their wings at an average of 53 beats per second, according to the National Park Service.

It looked like about 100 of them per dip, he said. That’s a lot. He and Card would have to fly back out later that day to spray an oily chemical solution that would smother the bugs.

That’s is how mosquito control works, Card explained.

“We’re not out there putting stuff out just to put it out,” Card said. “We’re very targeted.”

The Mosquito Control District monitors weather, water levels and other factors to determine where mama skeeters are likely to lay their eggs, and pretreats those spots. Other areas, where eggs are already present, are treated with a larvicide. Areas that have adult

The insecticides can be released with spraying equipment on the ground, from the water with the district’s airboat or Boston Whaler skiff, or from the district’s helicopter, a five-seater Bell 206 B3 Jetranger the district bought new in 2005.

Card takes the helicopter up twice a week on inspection flights — bringing it in low to hover next to rain gauges on the ground that he checks with his right hand, while managing the copter’s controls with his left — and treats likely breeding areas monthly with a pretreatment.

“We take pleasure in seeing that rare kind of mosquito — a culex, or a coronator — little things like that are what make us happy,” said Positano, the district’s assistant director and operations manager.

Every day, Sabatini and other district techs bring in traps filled with anywhere from dozens to more than 100,000 mosquitoes.

Mosquito Control staff ID them under a microscope, and feed the data into computer programs that help the district keep track of what skeeters are breeding where, and in what numbers.

Hockla, the district’s surveillance coordinator, has probably caught five or 10 of the uncommon coronator mosquitoes so far this year, he said.

There are 48 mosquito species in Flagler County, and about 80 statewide, not all of which use humans as a blood source. The district has mosquito identification guides that look much like birding books, but Positano and Hockla don’t need them.

They can tell the more rounded abdomens of culex mosquitoes from the more pointed ones of the aeges mosquitoes — the kind that carry Zika — from the shiny body of the psorophora ferox, with its

“The ferox is probably one of my favorites, because it’s iridescent,” Positano said.

The district tries to get them young.

“A lot of people have this idea that there’s mosquito control, and it’s fog trucks that go around the city and apply pesticides,” Positano said. “We do not do that.

“When we’re putting the pesticide out, it’s a very small amount specific to mosquitoes,” Positano said.

“So unless you’re a flying insect flying around at night you’re probably not going to kill anything.”

It’s also used in minuscule amounts, and won’t harm people or pets, Positano said. The foggers used in residential areas spray a solution of permethrin, the same stuff hikers and hunters buy in aerosol cans at outdoor stores to spray on their clothes.

Just three-quarters of an ounce of pesticide treats an entire acre of land.

Sometimes the district also sprays in response to service requests — when someone notifies the district that they have a mosquito problem on their property — and all too often, the reason the bugs are there is obvious.

THE DANGER

Positano knows what it’s like to be chased down by a blood-sucking horde.

“I would go to knock on someone’s door to do a service request and I’d have to run back to my truck because I’d be covered in mosquitoes,” he said. That was in Jefferson County, in the panhandle. It’s not like that here.

But that’s how many Americans know mosquitoes — a nuisance that can leave joggers swatting, or transform a pleasant hiking spot into a humming hell area after a summer rain.

But public health experts like Positano know mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance.

Although techs like Sabatini, doing their morning mosquito landing counts, keep a close eye out for toothy critters like bears, snakes and gators while letting the skeeters bite; worldwide, mosquitoes — by serving as vectors for diseases like malaria, Dengue fever, eastern equine encephalitis and yellow fever — kill more people than all those animals.

For most Floridians today, skeeters aren’t a killer, but mosquitoes and the illnesses they spread have shaped Florida history, impeding the state’s development, causing plagues that killed off hundreds in settler towns, and contributing

When a mosquito sucks your blood, she (yes, she!) isn’t using it for her own sustenance. Female mosquitoes of some — but not all — species use blood for the protein they need to grow their eggs. Male mosquitos don’t need blood. Both male and female mosquitoes subsist off sugar, and get it from plants.

In addition to stagnant water, some mosquitoes lay their eggs in plants like water hyacinths that hold water between their leaves, or lay them in the earth. When the eggs are laid in earth, rain water triggers the hatching. As long as they’re dry, those eggs can live for a very long time — for some species, as long as three to five years.

The combination of mosquitoes and heat has also shaped Florida’s traditional Cracker architecture, making large open breezeways that created air currents to cool the home and deter the bugs a staple of houses built on old Florida homesteads. Settlers built their homes in open, windy areas to blow the pests away, and stocked ponds and ditches with fish that would eat mosquito eggs and larvae. Still, mosquitoes swarmed so thick they sometimes suffocated cattle.

Hikers, hunters and boaters don’t like the pesky bugs much more than Webb did, and mosquitoes still shape Florida’s tourism economy: Heavy swarms can suck away customers from hunting and fishing guides and from the hotels and restaurants that cater to their clients.

Positano and Hockla have come to a certain peace with the bugs.

“When I worked for Fish and Wildlife, we just hated them,” Hockla said. “Now we work in balance with them, but we do have to keep their populations in check.”

Positano agreed, noting that jobs in mosquito control attract outdoorsmen who are at home with the bugs.

“It almost self selects for people who want to go out into middle of nowhere with a machete and repellent or something to work with the mosquitoes,” he said.

How does Positano think of his relationship with mosquitoes? “‘Know thy enemy,’” Positano said. “I’m kind of Zen warrior with them. I understand their need to exist. But I’m also going do everything I can to fight them.”

f you search Que’Shaun Byrd’s name on the top high school recruiting websites, you’ll find limited information about him.

No offers. No grade. And seemingly no interest, despite his 3,000+ yards and over 33 touchdowns in the last few seasons.

What most of those sites do list is his 5-foot-6 — give or take an inch — stature, and 160-pound size. It’s no secret that he’s short.

Lend him a couple inches, and he couldn’t find a large enough mailbox to contain all the schools that would be pleading for him to play for them.

“I get frustrated, because it seems like colleges only care about size and not the talent in a player,” Byrd said. “When com-

paring my stats to other players that are bigger than I, my stats are still better.”

Lining up behind an experienced offensive line, Byrd rushed for over 1,500 yards and scored 21 touchdowns during his sophomore year. Since that remarkable season, Byrd has run behind a bunch of underclassmen and a passing game that opposing defenses don’t fear.

Teams stuff eight or nine players in the box, anticipating a Byrd run, though it sometimes doesn’t matter.

This past week, Mainland’s defensive coordinator yelled to his players, “It’s a toss right! A toss right,” but Byrd still managed to take that toss to the right and go from the 33-yard line down to the four-yard line.

“He’s one of the Top 10 players we have played since 2012, and that includes a list of guys like Sony Michel, Dalvin Cook, Torrance Gibson, Charles Nelson and a host of others,” Roland said.

“Everything he does, he does with the opposing defense knowing that he is going to get the ball.”

While the season is still young, and Byrd has many more yards to reach, schools rarely wait until the last minute to offer scholarships to student-athletes. That usually takes place during their junior season, but Byrd says he has drawn interest from a couple of schools, and, if he picks up any offers from the big schools, he plans to show the rest just what they missed out on.

“My motivation will be to prove that it doesn’t matter how small I am,” he said. “I can make big plays, even bigger plays then those guys that are 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds.”

aving been born blind, Trent Ferguson — a senior at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind — views his condition not as a hindrance but an opportunity to view things from a different light. And he’s right.

For Flagler County’s biggest game of the year, Trent accompanied the WNZF high school football broadcasting team to chat sports and add color commentary to the others’ play-by-play game analysis, achieving a part of his lifelong dream to become a sportscaster.

Trent has enjoyed a relationship with WNZF, as he has often sat in with “Free For All Friday” host David Ayres, and he hosts a podcast show “Outta Sight” (available on soundcloud.com) with sports field reporter Rich Carroll. He birthed all of that from previously recording public service announcements about texting and driving for the station.

Because Trent was born blind, I had to ask him a couple of questions to understand how he has Trent Ferguson been able to comment on games. He’s never seen people, a football or a football field, and he has no visual reference. So, how is all of this possible?

Well, he’s spent his entire life around people. And Trent loves to throw the football around with his friends. He’s run up and down football fields and has learned the field dimensions. He knows a lot more than I assumed, and, based on his podcasts, you’d never know that he couldn’t see what he was talking about. He’s spot on in his takes.

When Trent isn’t taking in his Tampa Bay Rays games or hanging out with Rich, he likes to make music and play with his band, also called Outta Sight.

“Learning how to play drums is probably the best thing that ever happened to me,” he said. “Growing up, I would always beat on the washing machine and dinner tables.”

Trent becomes the latest human wonder that takes away the excuses for not going after our dreams.

Greens for Teens seeks to help students with their education and their golf skills.

tudents who participated in Renny Roker’s former Greens for Teens program have gone on to play in other countries and in college, and Roker even says some have played in the LPGA. Now, he wants to assist locals in doing the same with his free program.

Greens for teens — run by Roker, Linda Sanders and Palm Harbor golf pro Christian Bell — aims “to lower students’ golf scores while increasing their grades,” as Roker puts it. There are other benefits he believes participants will gain from the program.

“Golf teaches you all about life,” Roker said. “When you get into a bunker or in the rough, you have to find a way to get out all by yourself. It strengthens you inside, and that’s what we hope to do. To us, it’s equally as important to have good grades as it is to have good scores. And when they go handto-hand, then it’s really good.”

Greens for Teens has partnered with many local organizations.

Bethune-Cookman University will lend some of its professors and students to regularly tutor participants. Others have sponsored Greens for Teens. And the Flagler County School Board earned a standing ovation when it was announced that it would bus students from school to the Palm Harbor Golf Club, where the program will take place.

“I wanted to make sure I thanked them for participating in this program and for offering the trans-

portation; that’s big,” said Traci Griffin, who signed up her teenage daughter. “I’m a business owner and I work at a school. It’s hard to get my daughter to these different events, so I had to jump on this.

And then it’s golf — for free!”

“One of the things we’ve learned through the years is that golf tends to increase grades,” Roker said.

“It’s a sport where you have to focus and think. You can’t do all that craziness like they do in basketball. It is set up in such a way that when you do it right, it works.

And, when you don’t, it doesn’t.”

Greens for Teens is seeking sponsors who can help with the influx of student participation. It is also seeking mentors who will work with and play with the students.

Rosie is our African grey. She has a wonderful vocabulary and will occasionally whistle a happy tune. But then there are those times when she gets stuck on a sound. The sound is never a happy tune. She will repeat the sound of a truck backing up, beep, beep, and beep. This is not pleasant. Nor is the high-pitched note she can reach and repeat, or the “hammering” sound.

Elizabeth was impressed, and motivated, by what some of her peers were doing.

“There was a girl who wrote for a political magazine and another who was interning for a lawyer,” she said. “It really opened my eyes to what opportunities are out there. I came home trying to figure out how to get involved in my city’s teen court.”

“This is what I love about the American Legion,” Boys State Coordinator George Stockley said.

The teens weren’t the only ones in the spotlight at the evening dinner meeting. The first thing on the agenda was dessert as American Legion member Michael Goodyear was presented with an American Flag decorated cake in honor of his 95th birthday.

During his summer vacation, Simon Krassner remembers taking a memorable seat.

“It was just for a few minutes, but I sat in Marco Rubio’s chair,” Simon, a senior at Matanzas High School said.

Simon was one of four students from Flagler County who spent time in the Tallahassee this summer learning about State and local government. The rising seniors from Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools participated in the 2016 American Legion Boys and Girls State.

BUSINESS OBSERVER SKYWAY BUILDERS GETS TOP HOME PERMIT: $455,000 Skyway Builders received the two most expensive permits for single-family homes last week in the city of Palm Coast. Skyway will build a home at 16 Bluejack Court for $455,000 and a second home at 1 Sea Garden Path for $348,000.

Holiday Builders pulled three home permits (128 Wood Haven Drive, 137 Park Place Circle, 135 Park Place Circle), as did Dream Finders Homes (112, 106 and 100 Spoonbill Drive). Seagate pulled two permits (118 Park Place Circle and 18 Birchwood Drive), and Humbert Builders one at 26 Seamanship Trail.

Flagler Habitat got two permits to begin homes. A single-family home at 19 Riviera Drive will cost $164,000; another at 47 Pine Crest Lane will cost $159,000.

In total, 13 single-family permits were awarded by the city this week.

CI Homes is purchasing five land tracts covering more than 190 acres in the Town Center at Palm Coast. The Daytona Beach-based homebuilder plans to build townhomes and single-family homes on approximately 80 acres in the master-planned community.

The plan is to build 324 new residences comprising 111 townhomes and 213 single-family homes on 50-foot-wide home sites. Community amenities will include a pool, fitness center, outdoor picnic area with barbecue grills and access to walking trails. Of the 190 acres, 80 are available for residential building and the remaining will be designated as permanent green space.

The Town Center, developed by Palm Coast Holdings, an Allete company, is a mixed-use community north of State Road 100 and

east of Belle Terre Parkway. The 1,557-acre development combines business, residential, parks, government and retail use. When finished, it is expected to include nearly 3,000 residential units, 2.2 million square feet of commercial space and 1.4 million square feet of office space.

“The Town Center will be the home of our third sales center in Palm Coast as we continue to expand into the market,” said Tom McCall, chief operating officer, in a press release. “ICI Homes has a strong presence and momentum in Palm Coast because we are very committed and bullish on the area.”
