The city of Palm Coast may buy the Palm Coast Yacht Club, off Palm Harbor Parkway, and convert it into a nature center and senior center. The 7,700-square-foot facility, built in 1992 and appraised at $775,000 by the county property appraiser’s office, would need some redesign and renovation — how much, the city staff isn’t yet sure —but it might be able to fulfill a contractual obligation with the Florida Communities Trust which requires the city to construct a nature center as part of the development of Long Creek through a FCT grant. It’s also large enough that it may also be able to serve as a senior center, city staff told City Council members at a City Council workshop Oct. 13. But, Palm Coast Mayor Jon SEE CITY PAGE 5

B

efore the season started, no one would have envisioned that a game between perennial powerhouse Mainland High School and the lowly Matanzas Pirates would be meaningful in late October. And certainly very few predicted that, in such a game, the now-mighty Pirates — not the Mainland Buccaneers — would be the only undefeated team at the kickoff, standing at the top of the district. But, then again, who would have predicted most of what Matanzas has already accomplished? Even bigger than its first win this season, the Pirates have a legitimate shot to knock off the Bucs at Municipal Stadium, which hasn’t been done in nearly five years, and earn what would be its biggest win in any team sport.
