BRIEFS Flagler County Fire Rescue responds to small plane crash Two men — Palm Coast residents Joel Fallon and Josh Rosa — were injured when the small plane they were flying crashed on the western outskirts of Plantation Bay the afternoon of Nov. 9.

Flagler County Fire Rescue personnel pulled Fallon and Rosa from the wrecked plane with serious injuries, and Flagler County emergency helicopter FireFlight and Volusia County Sheriff’s Office helicopter AirOne airlifted the men to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Fallon is owner of Granny NANNIES Senior Home Care, and Rosa is owner of Flagler Air Exchange. The two had taken off from the Flagler County Airport and were heading to DeLand when the plane went down.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

Two new council members and the city’s new mayor took their oaths of office and their seats at the dais Nov. 15 to the sounds of applause and bagpipes at the city’s regular council meeting at City Hall.

Newly sworn-in Mayor Milissa Holland thanked the public, expressed her gratitude to outgoing Mayor Jon Netts and Palm Coast’s first mayor, Jim Canfield, and called Palm Coast “a city we can all be proud of.”

“We are a culturally diverse community, one that we should honor and celebrate at all turns,” said Holland, a former Flagler County Commissioner and Palm Coast’s first female mayor.

New council member Nick Klufas, the council’s youngest-ever member, said the city’s future is bright and that he’s “looking forward to doing great things with a great council and a great mayor.”

Council member Robert Cuff, who has been seated with the council for about eight weeks in an interim capacity after his predecessor Bill McGuire stepped down before the end of his term, thanked the public, outgoing Mayor Jon Netts and outgoing City Councilman Jason DeLorenzo, and joked, “At last, I have a little seniority. Eight weeks isn’t much, but I’ll take what I can get.”

The Coastal Florida Police and Fire Pipes and Drums played God Bless America as the new council was seated.

The five-member council’s two senior members are now Steve Nobile and Heidi Shipley, who were both elected in 2014.

In his parting remarks, Netts — who was elected mayor in 2007 after serving on the council since 2001 and on the city’s code enforcement board for two years prior, and was barred from running for mayor again due to term limits — advised the newly seated council to look to the vision of the city’s founders as the council shapes Palm Coast’s future.

“Your first mayor and council spent time to articulate a vision for our community,” Netts said.

“Their vision was that Palm Coast would be a premier city to live, work and play. … We’ve been fortunate, and we remain fortunate, in that our citizens have elected people who share this vision. …

To our new mayor and new City Council members: As you make decisions about the future of Palm Coast, don’t forget to look back once in a while.”

Jim Landon, the city manager, praised Netts, calling him “on the top shelf” of elected officials, and also praised DeLorenzo, saying that he’d enjoyed watching DeLorenzo, one of the council’s younger members, grow into his role as an elected official. Landon said he looked forward to working with the new council.

“It feels new and fresh, and that’s a good thing,” Landon said.

“I like what I’m hearing, and believe we will work very well together.”

Staly begins transition, replacing Manfre as sheriff Following Rick Staly’s win on Nov. 8 in the Flagler County general election, Sheriff James L. Manfre invited now Sheriff-Elect Staly to tour the Sheriff’s Office facilities and officially begin the transition process.

“In order to provide SheriffElect Staly with a smooth transition into his new role as sheriff, I have opened the agency up to him and am prepared to assist in any way possible to make sure he has a successful start to his term as sheriff,” Manfre said.

Following his first visit as sheriff-elect, Staly was complimentary of the facilities and staff.

“Today was a great first step, and I am looking forward to talking with all employees as we begin the transition process,” Staly said. “I am honored to have been elected and look forward to working with the employees and community to ensure Flagler County has the best law enforcement services possible.”

Months later, boys who were accused of making threats at FPC still barred from school, still no charges The Sheriff’s Office is waiting on a forensic analysis of the boys’ computers.

The six boys removed from Flagler Palm Coast High School Sept. 7 in connection with what officials at the time called a “detailed plan to conduct a coordinated plot” against the school are still barred from campus, but no charges have been leveled against any of them.

The School District says it’s waiting for the Sheriff’s Office to give it the go-ahead to let the teens back into school, and said so to one of the boys’ attorneys, Joshua Davis. Davis then spoke to an investigator at the Sheriff’s Office, who said it was the school district’s decision whether to let the kids back in or not, Davis said.

“My kid … is an honor student and a football player, and he missed out on homecoming and football and everything else in the world, and we’re still in la-la land, stuck between agencies,” Davis said. “I understand the school’s concern about that type of a situation. But at some point, I would hope that they would either decide that whatever needs to happen, happens; or let the kid back in school. But being stuck in limbo here is frustrating.”

A Sheriff’s Office spokesman reached by a reporter Nov. 15 said he’d thought the boys had all returned to school.

Died October 25, 2016 of complications resulting from a several decade long battle with cancer. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana Dec 21, 1928. She lived in many locations in the United States as a child, and attended the University of Denver where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She moved to St Augustine in 1959 and in the early 1960’s was the first woman juror ever to serve in St Johns County.

She worked initially at the Florida East Coast railroad but moved to the Florida Department of Military Affairs where she was a purchasing agent. She retired from the Arsenal in 1981. Once retired, golf became a leading interest and she was an avid player in the 80s and 90s. Later in life her interests turned to bridge where she achieved the ranking of Life Master.

She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. and Mrs. Oliver W. Greer and her husband SGM Jack W. Griffin, FLARNG. She is survived by her son, LTC (Ret.) Greer Griffin and his wife Sandy of Bossier City, La and daughter Kathy Goldstein of Jacksonville. She has 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no memorial service. Donations in her memory may be made to the S.A.F.E . Animal Rescue.

Later, after checking with investigators, spokesman Director Jim Troiano said that it seemed there had been “a little bit of confusion” between the Sheriff’s Office and the school district. He explained that the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating, and the investigation could “still take a couple of weeks yet” before it’s finished. The boys’ computers have been turned over to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office for forensic analysis, Troiano said, and in computer forensic analysis, “there are backlogs everywhere.”

“But because they were on the string, they went ahead and I guess suspended everyone,” he said.

“From my understanding, that was one kid who did all of that, and got the map of the school.”

The two-month period the teens have been out of school has made them miss a great deal, he said.

“To us, it’s two months,” Davis said. “For a 15-year-old, it’s like dealing with dog years, missing homecoming and growing up. It’s like their entire life.”

Davis explained the outline of the case as he understood it: There had been a chain of online chats, and one of the kids involved in the chat drew a map of how to attack the school, “and assigned the different kids what they would do in different places, and attack.”

“From what I’ve heard, it was a bunch of kids doing dumb stuff,” he said. “It wasn’t taken that way, understandably.”

The Sheriff’s Office appeared to have been viewing the case similarly just a day after the incident.

We had four tables full of neatly stacked clothes, as if we were in a department store, only more cobwebs.

It was the night before our garage sale. We were kneedeep in baby paraphernalia, the functionality of which I could only guess. My wife, Hailey, and I were folding dozens of little shirts and jeans onto some tables we had borrowed from friends for the occasion. These were the same clothes we had been painstakingly sorting and storing for years, and I was giddy at the thought of getting rid of them forever.

Our sons, Jackson (12) and Grant (10), were helping us, and the big question on everyone’s mind was this: What are we going to do with all this money we’re about to make?

“Do we need a bigger cash box at the checkout table?” I asked.

Hailey suggested we could use the money to buy paint for the walls in the kids’ rooms.

Grant cleared his throat and said, as politely as he could manage, “I don’t think we should paint the rooms.

Because I’d rather have my cut.”

“Umm, no,” I said.

“And we should put out a tip jar and say, ‘This is for the kids (cough cough).’”

I gave him another size 2T girls shirt and said, “Just keeping folding, OK?”

As the time went on though, Kennedy grew weary and sat in a lawn chair with her hands covering her face, as if to say, “What of my prized possessions will they try to sell next?”

I realized what a delicate balance you have to strike as the host of a garage sale. Do you sit there and stare down the customers as they’re browsing, hoping they’ll be too embarrassed to come and go without even buying one lousy toy from the 25-cent bin? Or do you feign indifference and hide behind a newspaper, hoping they’ll fall for some of your higher priced items?

Neither approach seemed to work very well, as the first several people came and went without spending much.

Then there were the people who inched by in their cars, surveying our possessions and finding them wanting, not even bothering to stop and

And then our friends called and said they saw the picture on Facebook of our wagon and wanted to buy it. Our profit just quintupled!

The inventory started to thin out to a degree as the squeaky rocking chair sold and then the bag of Lincoln Logs — but no one was buying the clothes.

When it was all over, Jackson tallied everything up, and it came to $92 and change. He showed the total to me on the calculator, and then, helpfully, he divided it by 4 to demonstrate how much we would all get if, you know, we decided to split it (apparently he either forgot that he had two younger sisters or didn’t consider their

Why did the precincts flip?

11 local precincts that went to President Barack Obama in 2012 went to Donald Trump in 2016.

Volunteers credited targeted canvassing, and enthusiasm for Trump.

Of Flagler County’s 23 voting precincts, 11 voted for Democratic President Barack Obama in 2012.

But none of those precincts voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton this year. And not only did Flagler County voters vote for Trump, they voted straight red down the ticket in the general election, electing not a single Democrat.

What took the county’s map from a mixture of red and blue to solid red? Bob Updegrave, who leads voter outreach for the Flagler County Republican Club, pointed to two major factors: Republican campaign staff and volunteers deliberately targeted those formerly blue precincts, and there was a surge of excitement about Donald Trump that spurred new Republican voter registrations.

“The strategies were really fairly simple, and that was to go after those (formerly blue) precincts,” Updegrave said. “But the Trump phenomenon also helped in a big way to roll those over.”

Local Democratic Party officials and volunteers have not yet analyzed all of their canvassing data, and were not able to immediately say which neighborhoods Democratic campaign volunteers had targeted.

While people on the political right were rushing to register and eager to vote, Updegrave said, there seemed to be less enthusiasm on the Democratic side, dampening local turnout just as Republicans surged.

“The interest, the Democratic interest, in their own candidate just wasn’t very enthusiastic here … It was palpable — at doors, at events — whereas the Republican enthusiasm was very high,” he said.

The party capitalized on the enthusiasm generated by Trump to encourage voters to vote a straight Republican ticket.

“We did run a full ticket campaign as well as top of the ticket,” he said. Meanwhile, the Republican Party refined its ability to track likely voters since the 2012 election, he said.

“The technology improved, records improved, targeting improved, so that folks weren’t wasting a lot of time on ‘blanks,’” he said. “When one connected with a voter, one was connecting with a real voter, not just a name.”

As of 7 p.m. Nov. 8, 77.91% of the county’s 31,571 registered Republicans had voted. Only 69.56% of the county’s 25,312 Democrats had voted. A total of 56.86% of the 22,615 registered voters affiliated with no party or minor parties

PRECINCTS THAT FLIPPED had cast a ballot. The presidential race wasn’t the only one that saw voters seem to change their preferences from one election to the next.

Locally, City Council candidate Nick Klufas beat out competitor Pam Richardson in the general election after coming in second to her in a three-way primary.

Like Updegrave, Klufas attributed the flip in part to targeted campaigning, in his case, doorto-door.

“We really tried to focus on areas where we’d had poor performance (in the primary),” Klufas said in an interview after he took the oath of office for his new position Nov. 15.

Some of those trouble-spots had been ones the campaign hadn’t managed to reach before the primary, but then spent time on afterwards.

In the general, Klufas said, “We absolutely crushed it in the areas where we canvassed.”

His campaign hadn’t been on the ground in the B-Section, R-Section or W- Se c t i o n — areas that

largely fall into six precincts — before the primary, he said.

In the primary, he trailed Richardson in all six precincts, not getting more than 37% of the vote in any of them. But he went back to them before the general, knocking on doors and reaching 150-200 houses a day.

In the general, Klufas lost only two of those six districts, and one of them very narrowly — by 12 votes out of the total 1,844 cast in that race in the precinct.

There was, of course, also another major element at play, complicating comparisons: A third candidate, Anita Moeder, had been eliminated from the race after the primary, leaving her voters up for grabs.

Studies of canvassing’s effectiveness have repeatedly shown that door-to-door canvassing can increase voter numbers.

A study titled “Does canvassing increase voter turnout? A field experiment,” published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, states that face-toface contact with potential voters raises the possibility of voting by 6.3%, so every 16 contacts could generate one additional voter.

After all, Monti had a head start and appeared to be a strong runner. Chewning declined to comment for this story.

“The bottom line is, all of our deputies should be able to run,” Troiano said. “If we saw an issue where he couldn’t perform, then of course that’s something that we would evaluate, but we have no indication that (Chewning) couldn’t perform or do the job as required.”

Chewning followed appropriate training to call for backup, and Troiano pointed out that no deputy is going to win every footrace.

Indeed, a footrace is dangerous, as Sheriff-elect Rick Staly well knows. He said, “The last foot chase I was in, I was shot.”

Upon reaching the steps partway across the courtyard, Monti leaped down and continued sprinting toward State Road 100.

A few seconds later, Chewning arrived at the steps and lost some momentum as he descended. By then, there was no hope of getting close enough to Monti to apprehend him.

CONSEQUENCES OF THE ESCAPE

Help soon arrived, thanks to Chewning’s alert. Sirens sounded,

and multiple cruisers congregated across the street near the Bunnell water tower to search for Monti.

Out of my view, a Bunnell employee saw Monti run up the stairs to the rear water filtration tank, and Monti was later found inside the tank. He was pulled out, arrested and charged with domestic aggravated battery, burglary of an occupied structure, criminal mischief and resisting arrest without violence, according to the arrest affidavit. Chewning himself was on the scene and helped with the arrest, Troiano said.

t was sunny and peaceful outside the Flagler County Courthouse on the morning of Nov. 10, until the door flew open and a man ran out, apparently fleeing from the law.

Deputy Austin Chewning followed after the man, who was later identified as 42-year-old Sean Monti. Monti has been arrested several times in the past, and this time he was wanted on a domestic violence charge: His live-in girlfriend had told deputies that Monti had “grabbed her, picked her up in the air, and threw her down on the tile floor” — breaking her wrist, she said — in front of the couple’s 7-year-old son. On the morning of Nov. 10, Monti escaped from Chewning near the elevator inside the courthouse when he was being handcuffed.

Chewning yelled at Monti to stop, but Monti didn’t listen, and it became a footrace. But, as as Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jim Troiano said, Chewning’s physique resembles that of a lineman on a football team.

“There was no footrace,” Troiano said. “(Monti) looked like he could run a little bit.”

I happened to be an eyewitness to the scene, and I observed that as he continued his pursuit, Chewning raised his Taser and pointed and shouted at Monti, but the distance widened quickly. Chewning put down his Taser and radioed for

told deputies that Monti’s plunge into the water tank required workers to drain and flush all four of the plant’s 9,000-gallon tanks, and bring in 72,000 gallons of fresh water to replace the water.

The water had been contaminated because, according to Troiano, Monti had been bleeding.

The draining was expected to cost less than $1,500, but there could be an additional $1,000 for labor and chemicals. Davis told the Sheriff’s Office that the water supply had not been compromised: The water in the tanks were in the treatment process, and the water was not yet being delivered.

FITNESS STANDARDS

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement requires a written test but not a physical test to become a law enforcement officer; anything related to physical fitness is left up to the individual agencies.

When a deputy is hired in Flagler County, he or she is given a physical fitness test. (See the sidebar on the right.) After passing the test, the deputies are never formally tested again for their fitness. The union doesn’t allow it.

WHY THE UNION OPPOSES FITNESS TESTS

Mike Scudiero is the communications director with Coastal Florida Police Benevolent Association, the union of which many Flagler County deputies are members.

He said that of the two-dozen agencies represented by the PBA, five or 10 of them have fitness tests that can be administered after hiring, but most, like Flagler County, don’t. Even for the agencies that do have tests, Scudiero said, “They’re usually pretty minimal.”

Why would the union oppose fitness tests?

“Overall, conceptually, yes, we want everyone to be able to back up their fellow employees,” Scudiero said. “And everybody wants to make sure that when they radio out for assistance as an officer, someone’s coming that can help them. But we want to be careful about who administers these type of things. What standard are you going to use and who decides who passes or fails? It can get a little tricky.”

One concern, he said, is that a

supervisor could devise a fitness test that is designed to make deputies fail and lose their jobs.

Scudiero said that physical fitness did not come up in the most recently negotiated contract, which saw deputies get a 4% raise.

Troiano said that although there are no formal tests, there are checks and balances with regard to deputies’ fitness.

“They’re hired, and once that testing is over with, it’s the supervisor’s responsibility … to evaluate that deputy,” he said. “If other employees see issues, they’re required to report it.”

A medical exam can be required by the Sheriff’s Office if it is suspected that a deputy’s mental or physical health is an issue.

“Are our deputy sheriffs in shape?” Troiano said. “They’re all able to do the job professionally.”

Rick Staly is beginning the transition process as he becomes the new sheriff after Jan. 1.

Does he believe a fitness test would make the community safer?

“I think the community is safe,” he said. “I want to make sure that our employees are healthy.”

He is planning to begin a program called Work Out With the Sheriff, in which he would hit the gym alongside employees.

“The mandate in annual fitness testing is a union matter,” he said.

“I’d like to try the soft approach first and see if the encouragement works out, before we try to go down as a disciplinary process, because that’s what it ultimately comes down to.”

Memorial makes ‘invisible wounds’ visible City recognizes veterans with ceremony, new monument at park JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Tampa resident Cathy Sprigg had rejoiced when her son, Army Spc. Robert Allen, came home to the U.S. from deployment in Iraq. She’d thanked God that he’d returned safe and sound.

“Little did I know that he didn’t,” she said at the city’s Veterans Day ceremony at Heroes Memorial Park Nov. 11. “He was suffering from his silent wounds.”

Sprigg’s son died by suicide in 2012. His body wasn’t escorted home by law enforcement or patriot riders or flag-bearing citizens.

“His name won’t even be chiseled in a memorial for the heroes,” Sprigg said. “Not coming home a hero adds to the heartache. … My family and I, and families like ours — we know they were heroes.”

At the ceremony, the city of Palm Coast unveiled a memorial honoring veterans and members of the military who, like Sprigg’s son, developed invisible wounds: post-traumatic stress disorder, or traumatic brain injury.

“Dedicated to those brave hearted men and women who have served this great nation and have suffered and continue to battle the ‘invisible wounds of PTSD/TBI,”’ reads the monument’s text, etched in white on black granite. “Let their service

and sacrifice never be forgotten.”

Sprigg hoped the memorial would help reduce the stigma surrounding PTSD and TBI. One of her son’s friends, she said, had returned from deployment with a traumatic brain injury after his Humvee rolled over in Iraq. He struggled with life after the injury.

“I read a while back in the paper that he was arrested,” Sprigg said.

“Under the article, in the comments, somebody wrote, ‘One more scumbag off the street.’

When I was handed the flag and told, ‘On behalf of a grateful nation,’ and then I hear such comments, and many other similar stories, and learn of the long waiting list for treatment — sometimes coming too late — I wonder: Is it really a grateful nation?”

More must be done to educate the public, she said.

The initiative to add the Invisible Wounds Memorial at Heroes Memorial Park was led by Palm Coast resident Cathy Heighter.

Heighter’s son, Raheen Tyson Heighter, was killed serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq in 2003.

And sometimes when they return, they’re not the same person that left.”

Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts led the city’s ceremony for the last time. He is stepping down due to term limits.

“No one deserves the support of the American people more than our veterans,” Netts said at the ceremony. “Their strong military presence both at home and abroad maintains our nation’s freedom and national security.”

Heroes Park, Netts said, will be the first location in Florida to have a monument dedicated to raising public awareness of PTSD

and TBI among veterans.

“We hope Palm Coast will lead the way for other cities and counties in Florida to follow,” he said.

Jack Howell — commandant of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 808, founder of Teens-In-Flight, and a retired Marine colonel — said at the ceremony that the nation’s veterans give Americans the right to choose in a peaceful election.

But military service in war, he said, takes its toll on veterans, including those who don’t come home with visible injuries.

“There’s nothing glorious about war — nothing glorious at all; it’s inhumane. It’s horrible,” Howell said. “And young boys and young women are thrown into this, and then, it changes you. …

It changes you forever. And you have to wonder why humanity allows this.”

he Matanzas Pirates (7-3) capped off their most successful season to date despite a 10-0 loss against Sebastian River in their first-round playoff game Friday, Nov. 11, at Sebastian River.

A year after winning its first district game in three seasons, beating crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast for the first time, topping its conference and finishing with a winning record, Matanzas encored its performance by repeating those feats and adding a first-time playoff berth. Head coach Robert Ripley deemed this season a success.

“We (players and coaches) spoke about this early in the season, about checking off that final box — making the playoffs,” he said.

“Now with that accomplished, a new set of goals have arrived: win a district championship, host and win a playoff game.”

On his roster going forward, Ripley says, “We played a lot of sophomores and juniors. We will need to sure up some areas and have a great offseason. But it’s also time to have people step up and become leaders. We have a great group coming back.”

hen two teams take the field and give it their all, I expect one to prove its superiority over the other — by winning.

In the recent soccer match between FPC and Matanzas, the game concluded in a 0-0 tie. No player left the field with a clean jersey, having worked from the opening whistle until the final buzzer, but they all walked away as “not winners,” but also “not losers.”

I asked both coaches their opinions about ties, and Matanzas coach Weber said, “It can be a beautiful thing, if you understand soccer. If you’re outmatched, a tie is a win.”

I understand that. And FPC coach Reg Monsanto simply replied, “A tie is better than a loss.” Makes sense.

Playing sports in our backyards as kids, no one wanted a draw. Although we didn’t want to walk away as losers, we instituted rules on the spot to ensure the game ended with a winner.

After a mom would yell, “Jimmie, it’s getting late. You have five more minutes,” someone would shout, “Last basketball” or “Last touchdown wins.”

The only thing that mattered was that one team would win, and the other would lose.

This mentality has stayed with me and so many others, especially those unfamiliar with soccer and hockey. The most popular sports in America finalize competitions — even if they take the entire day to do so.

Baseball, tennis, football and basketball, to name a few, provide extra time to determine a winner. In baseball, you can play one extra inning, or 20 innings or more, all depending on how long it takes for a winner to be chosen. Some tennis matches are so long they have to be suspended and resumed the next day.

While I understand these extremes may cause injury for teams that play multiple times per week, I see an easy solution that could prevent the draw.

After the regular 80 minutes, instead of more extra time, teams can go straight to penalty kicks. Sooner than later, one team will have made more than the other with the same chances.

The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs and Matanzas Pirates played their most physical — and chippy — soccer match in years, in their 0-0 tie on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Matanzas.

Head coaches Reg Monsanto (FPC) and Rich Weber (Matanzas), also best friends, worked to transform this matchup from an event that demanded authorities be on watch years back to the friendliest of the school rivalries, where the teams got together to share a meal postgame in recent years.

That team relationship has almost dissolved.

Throughout the first of their two matchups, players on both teams took hard falls by opposing players, were carded often, and the rare red card was issued.

“They (both teams) still play together on club teams, but the depth of history is not the same,” Weber said. “And I think the game

“We have three relatives on the wall, and my dad can’t make it today, so I am doing this for him,” Maynard said.

The Wall is a 3/5 replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., standing 6 feet at the center and nearly 300 feet from end to end, according to themovingwall.org.

The Wall is part of a weekendlong Veterans Day remembrance at the Flagler Executive Airport.

On Friday, Nov. 11, hundreds gathered for a formal ceremony that including a fly-over by FireFlight, a T6 WWII trainer, and OV-1 Mohawk.

The event continues through the weekend with vendors, military displays, and live music.

“He is a nice guy, with a big heart for animals,” said Laura Williams, FCSO public information officer.

Phelps was held for the customary five-day waiting period, but no one has come forward to claim him. On Thursday his status changed.

“He is officially up for adoption,” Carotenuto said.

On Monday, Nov. 14, Carotenuto said Phelps’s heartworm test came back negative, excellent news for the dog that had been through so much.

“He still has to be neutered, but he’s ready for a new home,” Carotenuto said.

hen Flagler Humane Society Director Amy Carotenuto visited the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office last week, she brought someone special along with her: Phelps.

Phelps, named by the FHS staff after he swam the Intracoastal on Saturday, Nov. 5, was sporting blue and white bandages on all four paws.

“His paws were pretty torn up either by an oyster bed or the rocks he was trying to cling to,” Carotenuto said. “Flagler Animal Hospital checked him out and wrapped his paws.”

Carotenuto was at the sheriff’s office last week to accept the donation of a retired sheriff’s vehicle on behalf of the humane society. The sheriff’s staff couldn’t resist snapping photos of the dog and the officer who was an important part of his rescue, Sgt. Phil

ho’s got a “Clue”? The Josh Crews Writing Project’s 2016 gala was held Nov. 11, at the Island Grille in Flagler Beach, with a Clue theme. Chris Zwirn won the costume contest after he grew out his sideburns for eight weeks to look like Colonel Mustard from the board game.

The funds raised from the gala will be matched by the Crews family and are used to support writing clubs in every elementary and middle school in Flagler County. The foundation was created to honor and remember Josh Crews, an avid writer and storyteller.

This year $20,500 in scholarships were awarded, making it a total of $79,000, that has been awarded in the past six years.

Funds for the scholarships are raised through the annual North vs. South Golf Tournament.

YACHT CLUB SHOW BENEFITS FAMILY LIFE CENTER More than 140 Palm Coast residents packed Channel Side, the city’s newest special event venue, for a fashion show and luncheon on Nov. 2. Proceeds from the event, sponsored by the Palm Coast Yacht Club, benefited the Family Life Center of Flagler County.

The event featured clothing from Chico’s in Ormond Beach.

Another big name is discovering Palm Coast’s new Island Walk shopping center. IHOP submitted a plan on Oct. 25 to build a restaurant, and the plan is being reviewed by Palm Coast staff, according to city spokeswoman Cindi Lane. It should open in May or June 2017, according to an IHOP spokesman.

IHOP will be located next to Chase Bank; the building will be 4,641 square feet. It will have seating for 170 people and will be open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 24 hours Friday and Saturday. It should create 65-75 jobs.
