hen school is out for the summer, parents often find that their kids have a lot of energy — and a lot of free time. Rather than just plop them down in front of the TV for the next 10 weeks, D.J. Lebo, executive director of the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia, recommends finding them a valuable summer camp. The problem is, there are hundreds to choose from just in your surrounding zip codes. Lebo’s first step? Ask your kids. “Depending on their age, finding out what they’re interested in is important,” she said. “If you have a child who loves tennis, sign them up for a tennis camp.” Summer camps play a huge role in continuing to develop the emotional, social and sometimes even educational skills the kids have been learning all year at school. Lebo said that, when picking the perfect camp, it’s important to visit the camp beforehand (if possible) and ask yourself the following questions:
Courtesy photo
D.J. Lebo n Are the children attending the camp having fun? n Is there a lot of interaction between staff and children? n Are the staff screened and given background checks? n What is the ratio of adult to child? n Is the camp accredited? n Do children come back to the camp year after year? “That’s the best recommendation you can get,” she said. “If children can’t wait to come back next year.”
DID YOU KNOW
Florida allows camps to have 25 kids per one adult supervising. The Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia recommends finding a camp with a smaller ration, closer to 8 to 1.
