Joe Rizzo helps students overcome any obstacle ‘How do we get better? By learning from people,’ Joe Rizzo says. BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR
Hours before the interview for this story was scheduled to take place at the Government Services Building, Joe Rizzo got a text message. A student had arrived at an elementary school that morning in slippers; the student didn’t own a pair of shoes that fit. Rizzo, as executive director for the Flagler County Education Foundation, dropped everything and contacted his team. This was an emergency. This was why the Ed Foundation exists: to give students the tools they need to succeed. Within 30 minutes, Operations and Database Specialist Shelley Wheeler had gone to the store, bought a pair of shoes and a jacket — “I figured if he was just wearing slippers, he probably didn’t have a jacket, either,” she said — and arrived at the school to make the delivery. “Identifying the problems and solving them is one thing my team does best,” said Rizzo, praising Wheeler and his two other staff members: Assistant Director Rebecca Bower and Student Services Coordinator Christy Butler. Flagler County received another allotment of COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday, Jan. 19. All those doses were scheduled to be given out in appointments on Jan. 20-21. No appointment slots remain. “Appointments filled quickly after the county contacted individuals on its 6,000-name call back list, as well as more than 100 people whose appointments for Jan. 11 had been canceled,” the Florida Department of Health-
Flagler announced on Jan. 19. “The balance of appointments were filled seven minutes after county sent out a text message to its FLAGLERCOVID subscribers.” Officer Bob Snyder said on Flagler Broadcasting’s “Free For All Friday” radio program Jan. 15 that another shipment is expected to arrive on Friday, Jan. 22, containing second doses for people who’ve already received their initial dose. Those will be available to Florida residents who received their first dose in Flagler County, even if they live in a different
Florida county. At this time, only people 65 and older and healthcare workers are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines in Florida. Studies are showing that the first dose of the Moderna vaccine — the one that’s been distributed in Flagler — provides significant protection, DOH-Flagler Medical Director Dr. Stephen Bickel said, citing a recent study of 1,000 people. “They found that starting at
