The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office recently honored five individuals for excellent work this quarter, two of whom are Ormond Beach residents.

Detective Benjamin Gordon was detective of the quarter. His work in two commercial burglary trends, an armed burglary, and an armed robbery all resulted in arrests. In another case, a man put a gun to his head and threatened to kill himself during a dispute with his ex-girlfriend, VCSO reported. Gordon was able to negotiate a peaceful surrender.

The second resident recognized was volunteer of the quarter Richard Blanchette, of the Citizen Observer program.

Ames Park fish killed due to lack of oxygen

In light of an increase of fraud and scamming cases in the city, the Ormond Beach Police Department is asking residents avoid providing personal information or credit card information over the phone when contacted by a “debt collector.”

Police advise debts, if legitimate, be paid in person or online, and warn against paying a debt via gift card or Green Dot cards, a press release states.

Half of the fish in the Ames Park pond died early this month due to a crash in dissolved oxygen, the city said.

A rumor had spread saying that the kills were a result of a herbicide sprayed into the water.

The dead fish were first noticed on Nov. 6 and cleaned up by the city’s aquatic weed control contractor, Edenfield Corp., according to an email from Kevin Gray, public works operation manager. The city ponds are shallow by design, Gray explained, and the Ames

Park pond is fed by a well; well water has no oxygen in it.

“If an oxygen source was put at the head of the system this would dramatically improve the quality of water there and keep this from happening again,” Gray said.

The fish died overnight when oxygen decreased due to lack of photosynthesis from sunlight, he reported. The several days of cloud cover and rainfall didn’t help.

The city has never sprayed the herbicide, Round Up, in ponds, Ormond Beach Public

Information Officer Jenn Elston said in an email.

The pond was treated with an algicide the morning of Nov. 4, a routine treatment Gray said has been used for at least 15 years. If the fish kill had been a result of the algicide, it would’ve killed all the fish, and it would have happened immediately.

For future prevention, an artificial supply of oxygen using a $900 surface aerator, like the one at Rockefeller Gardens, will be installed at the park soon.

Gaslight parade will stop traffic With the annual Birthplace of Speed Gas Light Parade happening this Friday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m., vehicular traffic along the parade route should expect delays, police report.

The parade will start at East Granada Boulevard and Riverside Drive before continuing east to South Atlantic Avenue, and then south to Harvard Drive.

Eastbound traffic will be temporarily stopped at the base of the bridge when the parade begins.

or some, Nov. 22 was an ordinary day. But for 23 children, it was the day they officially became part of their forever families.

The National Adoption Day event at the Plaza Resort and Spa in Daytona Beach finalized the adoption of these children into 15 different families from Volusia, Flagler and Putnam counties.

Hosted by the Community Partnership for Children, the ceremony was held publicly to celebrate the importance of adoptions, according to a press release. Last year, CPC finalized 277 adoptions in the three counties.

“We are on track to exceed our goal this year as well,” said Tiffany Garten, adoption supervisor at CPC. “This adoption unit works hard to ensure that we are achieving permanency for as many of our children as we can through the process of adoption.”

Circuit Judge Christopher France shared a personal story of adoption in his family — it was about Andrew John, the brother he gained when his father remarried. A.J. had been adopted by France’s stepmom.

Years after their parents married, France and A.J. had a “heartto-heart.”

“I told him, ‘A.J., you are the brother I never had,’” France recalled. “And he looked at me and said, ‘I feel the same way.’”

The Williams family welcomes Eric into their lives forever

Just like A.J. changed his life, France said what these families came to the Plaza to do would also change their lives.

“By this act that we are about to embark on, this legal act, we’re really engaging in an adventure of a lifetime, and I’m proud and thankful to each of you for choosing to do that,” France said.

Former CPC worker Amanda Bailey also spoke at the ceremony. She said when she left her job due to moving out of the area, she soon realized how much she missed the joy of adoptions. Later on, she got involved with helping CPC with recruitment.

By taking in an adopted child, you are changing their lives, Bailey said. It creates a “ripple effect of happiness and hope.”

“Sometimes ‘yes’ is the only thing we can say because we are here for a bigger purpose,” Bailey said. “We may not have seen it two months ago, two years ago or even the day of placement, but through saying yes, we are moving mountains.”

Still, while she loved the feeling of helping someone create their family through adoption, Bailey admitted she never thought it would form part of her story.

started the process to adopt a child of their own. She knows now firsthand how difficult the process can be.

“There’s a lot of loss to resolve and some big questions that need to be asked and answered,” Bailey said. “There’s major faith from deep within that you need to find.”

Days like this adoption event, Bailey said, give her that faith.

hanksgiving means it’s time for turkey-themed crafts at the Environmental Discovery Center.

Local children spent part of their Saturday afternoon on Nov. 23 making pinecones into turkeys. How so? With a little glue and construction paper, anything is possible. As the children got to crafting, EDC staff and volunteers also taught them facts about turkeys.

The craft event was presented by the city’s Department of Leisure Services.

A long line of people received complete Thanksgiving meals and more from the Jerry Doliner Food Bank on Nov. 22 at the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, 470 Andalusia Ave. Those who are registered with the association were eligible to pick up the food which included a variety of vegetables, fruits and desserts, and of course a turkey. The holiday meal giveaway for 300 people cost $12,000, according to Gloria Max, executive director of the association, and all came from donations.

The people used rolling suitcases, boxes and wagons to transport the foodstuffs to the car, and they were helped by volunteers, which included members of American Legion Post 267, 156 New Britain Ave., Ormond Beach.

“They give you everything you need for dinner, even pies and cakes,” she said. “Gloria Max is my hero, I think she’s superhuman.”

Max has continued to work while receiving cancer treatments for several years.

Doing the right thing when no one is looking can prove difficult for some, but that’s exactly what 11 Ormond Beach Middle School students did, earning them recognition by the Ormond Beach Police Department on Nov. 20.

OBPD and the Ormond Beach Police Athletic League held a celebration luncheon for these students as part of their involvement with Do The Right Thing, an initiative that began in Miami.

Before signing their certificates, Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey read about the students’ good deeds.

“Some of the acts that those kids did — acts of compassion, kindness, courage — at that young age, just gives me hope for the future,” Godfrey said.

Dear Editor: Our city leaders have worked tirelessly to make our city the best place to live. But nobody is perfect.

The worst decision our city leaders made was to continue putting fluoride in our drinking water. Fluoride causes dental fluorosis on developing teeth. The severity of dental fluorosis depends on how much and how long children under 8 years of age ingest fluoride. There is no disputing the warnings on products containing fluoride.

There are no warnings on our drinking water which research shows has many risk factors. Is it because there is such a small amount of fluoride put into our water? Can we be sure of the amount?

Many residents were at one OB Life meeting to discuss the quality of our water. My entire table was against adding fluoride to their water. When someone at another table brought it up at the meeting, it was immediately dismissed.

Our common-sense commissioner, Troy Kent, has worked to inform his constituents about fluoride. But when it came to the long awaited vote taken at the commission meeting, constituents were not informed of that meeting.

The city of Ormond Beach could stop putting fluoride in our water and use the

Granada Pointe light Dear Editor: Ormond Beach residents have recently suffered a rash of traffic accidents on West Granada Boulevard in the vicinity of the newly activated traffic signal at the new Wawa.

It should be noted that neither FDOT or professional traffic studies warranted the light as necessary. The traffic light was purchased by developer Paul Holub at a reported cost of $450,000. The light was cited as one of the “public benefits” the city received from Mr. Holub as a rationale for granting him a number of waivers and exceptions from longstanding development rules in his development of 23 acres on both sides of State Road 40.

Meanwhile we still do not have a traffic light at the Hull Road-U.S. 1 intersection, where thousands of kids and families enter and exit the city’s recreation fields.

It should be noted that initially an electronic message sign was deployed to warn motorists driving east on Granada, rounding a sharp

Important to note is that gas stations are special exceptions, in part because as a drive-through they increase traffic. This allowance was granted by the commission.

The car wash (another special exception), in essence another drive-thru, has not yet begun operation, and yet this area is already a highly congested “bottleneck.”

Against the protests and pleadings of many in the Ormond Beach community, the Granada Pointe traffic signal and commercial development was created to address the needs of special and moneyed interests, not the people.

Dear Editor: There has been renewed talks about placing a possible one-cent sales tax hike on the 2020 ballot for Volusia voters by some Volusia County elected officials. The half-cent sales tax increase question failed countywide on the May mail-in ballot 55%-45%. It failed by an even wider margin 57%-43% in the city of Ormond Beach. I want to thank the Ormond Beach city commissioners for making a statement against reviving the sales tax increase question and for listening to the 6,272 residents who voted against higher taxes. I also want to thank Councilwoman Heather Post for opposing higher taxes.

Also on that May ballot, Ormond Beach voted 62%38% for term limits. However, term limits will not be implemented due to being contingent on passting extended terms. That one was rejected 66%-34%. I am hopeful the Ormond Beach City Commission will once again listen to the loud and clear voice of 6,726 (454 more than voted against higher taxes) residents and place the term limits question on the 2020 ballot so that the voters’ wishes will be adhered to.

HEATED EXCHANGE 9:20 a.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard Petit theft. Police arrested a 51-year-old Daytona Beach man who threatened to cut off the head of a local supermarket loss prevention officer after the store employee called police to say that the 51-year-old had stolen a four-pack of boxers.

The man had taken the underwear to the store’s refund center and “returned” them in exchange for a gift card. The store loss prevention officer then called police and escorted the man into his office. Police report the man threatened the employee, saying he was an ex-Marine and that he had killed lots of people, and would kill him and also harm his family.

Police detained the man, who later said he had stolen the merchandise to try and get enough money for a bus ticket. While in police presence, the man continued to threaten the employee and call him racial slurs, according to the police report.

He was taken to jail.

HALLWAY FACE-OFF 1:38 p.m. — 200 block of South Atlantic Avenue Disturbance. An Ormond Beach man told police a fellow hotel guest threatened to push him from the balcony if he didn’t get out of their way when trying to pass the hotel hallway at the same time, police report.

The man said the other guest used profanity, and that there was no reason for his aggression. The hotel guest told police he never mentioned anything about “pushing anyone from no

A 79-year-old Ormond Beach man gave a woman a handwritten note, which was sexual in nature, and told police he thought the woman was his friend, and not a random stranger in a store. A police officer was flagged by a store employee who said the man was passing notes to women soliciting sex, according to the incident report.

The note stated “Complete whole body tongue massage,” and listed the man’s name and phone number. The woman on the receiving end of the note told police that it made her uncomfortable.

The man denied passing similar notes in the past. However, the store manager provided police with a picture of a business card containing the same wording. The man gave it to a store employee a few weeks ago, police report.

An Ormond Beach Police sergeant was demoted in rank to officer after an internal affairs investigation revealed he had been cultivating a relationship with a criminal offender whom police were investigating for running a drug house.

HUSBAND OVERDOSED

Documents showed that Officer William Warmington and Jenna Rinehart first met in 2015 during a traffic stop where she was arrested. Warminton said they crossed paths again this past March during an overdose call at her home involving her late husband, who died a month later on April 19 by drug overdose. OBPD had been actively investigating Rinehart’s Ormond Beach home as a drug house, and there were six documented patrols conducted on the street by Warmington’s squad.

Rinehart and Warmington struck up a romantic relationship, texting back and forth for a couple of months, documents show. On one occasion, they rode to her daughter’s softball game together on his motorcycle. On another, they walked

During the investigation, Warmington was asked if he thought it was “wise” to start a relationship with Rinehart.

He said “he thought it was a good thing that he could contact someone in a problem area and communicate with them,” according to documents, as “it puts you in a position to help someone.”

PRIOR COUNSELING

This wasn’t the first time Warmington has received disciplinary action. In June 2017, he received a written reprimand for an at-fault crash. In May 2018, he received counseling for approving his own overtime without authorization. A few months later in August 2018, he was counseled again for sleeping while on duty.

In November 2018, he received another written reprimand for negligence involving adequate staffing levels. In May of this year, he was also suspended for 24 hours without pay for engaging in an unauthorized vehicle pursuit.

ith his team down 2, the Buccaneers point guard Jordan Sears was wide open at the top of the 3-point line as the seconds melted off the game clock.

Despite six previous misses from beyond the arc, the release felt perfect. The shot was on line. It hung on the rim for a brief moment before spinning out, and the Bloodhounds rebounded the ball as time expired.

That was how Mainland’s 201819 season, and 26-game winning streak, came to an end: a 49-47 loss to Auburndale in the Class 7A regional semifinal on Feb. 26 at Auburndale High School.

The sting of that loss, which was the Buccaneers’ second loss of that entire season, remains.

“It’s fuel to the fire,” said Sears, who scored 32 points in Mainland’s 63-57 season-opening victory over Palatka the night of Thursday, Nov. 21, at Mainland High School. “It’s something we can build on.”

The Buccaneers are almost a completely new team in 201920. The Buccaneers return three starters from last season in Sears, guard Taron Keith and center Shayne Brennen. But they also graduated prolific scorer and athlete Rodney Rhoden, who now plays Division I basketball at Long Beach State, and dynamic forward Johnny Brown, who plays for Florida State College at Jacksonville.

“I miss those guys a lot,” Sears said. “They were my brothers.

But the show goes on.”

The Buccaneers have several new additions, including a pair of talented freshmen: Dontrell Thompson and Nigel Cook. The Buccaneers also added Ty’Rion Denson, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound transfer from Orlando’s Colonial High School.

“They’re good players who are going to be able to get good minutes for us,” Mainland head coach Joe Giddens said. “I’ve got some experienced guys and a lot of youth. We’re just going to have to keep playing and see what happens.”

The goal for this team is always the same: to go as deep in the state playoffs as possible.

To attain that goal, the Buccaneers will have to find a way to form chemistry and take pride defensively, a c c o rd i n g to Buccaneers guard Kenny Witherspoon.

“If we work hard in practice, it’s going to show on the court,” he said.

Horticulturists of tomorrow Ormond Beach Elementary cultivates interest in fruits, vegetables

arvest time at Ormond Beach Elementary means it’s time for students to reap the fruits of their labor.

Wednesday, Nov. 20, marked the day OBE garden club students in third, fourth and fifth grade were finally able to harvest radishes, lettuce and sweet potatoes after months of cultivating them in the school plots. The gardening is part of an education program made possible by a partnership between the school district, the county and the University of Florida Volusia County Extension, which helps provide master gardeners to help tend to gardens at schools like OBE or out in the community.

Ormond Beach Elementary teacher Francesca Knutson, who oversees the club, said the goal is for the students to feel like the school garden and the food it produces is theirs, as well as provide an educational opportunity regarding healthy eating habits.

“It gives you value and nutrition, but it’s also just a great t i m e ,”

Knutson said. “It’s very exciting, and the kids pretty much do everything.”

That’s why the sprouting vegetables aren’t in neat rows, she added. Between 20 and 30 students take part in the club throughout the school year. Their participation has boosted their performance in science standardized tests, she explained; before the club, the students weren’t doing well in the life science portion.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

When it comes to bringing the garden to fruition, OBE has shown that it takes a village.

“The community has really supported us,” Knutson said.

“The Master Gardening program and our Rotary — it’s been night

and day difference.”

The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach has helped OBE with its sprinkler system for the garden as well as installed new raised beds.

Patrick Zayas, county supervisor for the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension, regularly comes to OBE to teach students about nutrition.

It’s a program that goes handin-hand with the garden, as it helps students understand where their food comes from and how it impacts their health.

A lot of schools initiate garden programs on their own, Zayas said, but some of them need an extra hand when it comes to horticulture.

“That’s where the University of Florida comes in and the extension service,” Zayas said. “They provide that expertise, they provide that knowledge through the master gardeners.”

Sharon Gamble, county extension director of livestock for the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, said over the past decades, people have become less and less connected to where their food comes from.

“Projects such as this really help to connect back with the origins of your food supply,” Gamble said. “That’s a deep message that comes down.”

DIGGING IN

After the students picked and washed their vegetables, it was time to eat. They sat at tables in the garden area and enjoyed a salad made with the food they cultivated this season. Knutson also made two different types of sweet potato pudding for them to try after an afternoon of harvesting.

Kimberly Wilson is part of the club, along with her sister Ashley.

She enjoys growing her own fruits and vegetables at school.

“It’s also fun when you’re doing all the harvesting and all the other things because you know you’re helping,” Kimberly said.

For fellow garden club member Indira Hicks, it’s also about seeing firsthand where food comes from, unlike food from the grocery store, she said.

“I like that I’m in the garden club because I can have one at my own house and we can make our own food,” Hicks said.

Mario Younes, who owns the restaurant along with Eddie Salami, operated the My Cousin Vinny’s restaurant on Beach Street for 10 years.

“I love cooking, and I love people,” he said.

He has heard from customers from the old Beach Street location, calling and asking when they can eat, he said.

Younes said he likes to talk and

laugh with his customers and make sure they have a good time.

“I treat them like family and give them the service they deserve,” he said.

Younes has been in the restaurant business his whole life, as well as his chef, Jerry Bush, who has 50 years of experience.

Bush retired 10 years ago, but had told Younes that if he ever opened a restaurant again, he’d come back as chef. Bush, 73, often rides his bicycle to work, about five miles.

Stetson University junior Bryson Pritchard, of Ormond Beach, won first place in a recent student entrepreneur pitch competition hosted by the Entrepreneurs’ Organization. This is the fifth first-place win for Pritchard, who was featured in the Ormond Beach Observer last March.

As a result of the win, Pritchard will head to Silicon Valley in February for the national championship as he pitches his idea, a medical device to help mitigate bloodstream infection rates. Pritchard has won $34,500 in entrepreneur competitions and is using his winnings to pay for patents, legal fees and product development.

TOMOKA BREWERY CLOSES IN ORMOND

Tomoka Brewery, 188 E. Granada Blvd., served up their last beer and pizza Nov. 24. The business has stopped operation after six and a half years.

“It was a good run,” said Pete Szunyogh who owned the shop along with wife, Jen Hawkins. “I appreciate the love and support over the years. I’ll miss the fun and have good memories.”

In 2014, they expanded by opening a Tomoka Brewing in Port

Orange along with partners where they had capacity to brew beer not available at the Ormond Beach location. It’s unclear why they recently sold their interest in Port Orange, but without the connection, do not have brewing capabilities in Ormond Beach.

Tomoka Brewery was one of the first in Volusia County. Szunyogh said they plan to take some time off and enjoy the holidays before deciding on their next step.

The Tomoka Eye Foundation has donated ocular exam equipment valued at over $5,000 to the Jesus Clinic in Daytona Beach.

“The doctors were using eye exam equipment from 1973 so we were very much in need of an update,” said Jesus Clinic Medical Director Dr. Bill Gilmer.

A clogging revival Dancers bring home trophy from state convention.

There’s nothing cloggy about the dance that’s done by the Speed City Cloggers, of Ormond Beach.

It’s lively, fun and done to modern dance music.

Brianna Cassisi, director, says it’s an exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise, and it provides a social opportunity. A dancer does not need a partner and makes new friends at the classes.

The Speed City Cloggers are a year-round class at the Elite Academy of Music and Motion, 142 E. Granada Blvd. in the Fountain Square Shoppes. There’s a 12-week beginner’s class that begins in January.

The clogging class functions as a club and recently returned from a Florida Clogging Council convention in Haines City with a second-place trophy. They’ve gone to the convention three times and this was the second time they’ve returned with a trophy.

Several dancers at a recent class said there’s no pressure or judgement in the class.

thing you know you’re doing a dance you didn’t know what you can do.”

After moving to Ormond Beach, Jervis saw an ad for the clogging class.

“I always wanted to do tap, and this is similar,” she said.

One misconception is that cloggers wear wooden shoes, Cassisi said. Instead, the shoes are similar to tap, with extra metal pieces at the heel and toe to make a jingling sound.

Currently the ages range from 30 to 80 in the class, which num-

bers 15 to 18.

Pam Connor, of Ormond Beach, danced with the Ormond Follies for 15 years, and now does her dancing in the clogging class.

“I’m just loving this. She’s fabulous. She’s fun,” Connor said, referring to the teacher, Cassisi.

Some of the dancers have tap dancing in their background, such as Betsy Levin, 80, who has danced all her life, even entertaining the troops with the USO. “It’s wonderful,” she said. “You meet nice people. You get your body moving.”

The camaraderie is what Chona Wylie, a psychiatrist who lives in Ormond Beach, enjoys the most.

“It’s great to be with people,” she said. “Share the love.”

Rose Ann Felice said it’s good for her brain. “You have to learn the music,” she said. “You have to count and stay on the beat.”

Cassisi, who learned clogging at age 13 and eventually became certified as a teacher, said clog-

ging gained popularity in the 1980s, with the growth of River Dance. There’s now another upswing, she said.

“It’s a uniquely American dance,” she said.

Clogging developed in the Appalachian region, where it derived from European folk dances.

NEVER TOO LATE FOR MUSIC

Elite Academy celebrated its fiveyear anniversary last year, and a wide range of musical instruments and voice are taught there.

Over the years, they doubled their space in Fountain Square Shops and now have about 165 students.
