BRIEFS Margaritaville grows by 260 acres Minto Communities has closed on a 260-acre property east of the current Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach community with the purpose to expand the development by 500 homes, the developer announced on Monday, Jan. 11.

Minto can now build 3,900 homes at Latitude Margaritaville, a 55-and-over community located off LPGA Boulevard, the press release states.

Homes in Latitude Margaritaville begin in the low $200,000, and Minto reports over 350,000 people are registered “Latitude Margaritaville Paradise Club” members, are considered prospective buyers.

Man shot in pitchfork faceoff A local man was killed during a confrontation with a friend near Ormond Beach in unincorporated Volusia County on Friday, Jan. 8.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that 34-year-old William Bay pointed a pitchfork at his friend “in a threatening manner” at their shared residence in the 1100 block of Avenue I. The friend, who was armed with a handgun, fired when Bay advanced toward him, citing fear for his and his wife’s lives.

No charges have been filed.

The investigation is ongoing.

Plantation Oaks was first approved by the county in 2002, and included single family homes. In 2012, that requirement was scrapped to allow manufactured housing.

Plantation Oaks was annexed into the city in 2019.

he most important task facing the recently installed Volusia County Council is bringing unity among the residents, said Chair Jeff Brower after being sworn into office on Thursday, Jan. 7, as he vowed to listen to his constituents and treat them with respect.

“To feel a sense of belonging, and neighborliness,” Brower said.

“To encourage peace and prosperity and liberty. Let’s vow to come together to make Volusia County the safest and the most pleasant place to live, to work, to play, to be able to drink the water and swim in it.”

Also sworn into office inside the council chamber at the start of the meeting were County Council members Danny Robins, Billie Wheeler and Heather Post. Robins is the new representative for District 3, a seat formerly held by past County Councilwoman Deb Denys who resigned her position to run for chair in the 2020 elections. Both Wheeler and Post are serving a second term.

When being sworn into office, Brower placed his left hand on two Bibles. One belonged to his father, and the other to his mother. He assured the public that after spending time with the county manager and staff, he felt “unequivocally” that their main goal was to help this council be successful. He requested differences be set aside in favor of serving.

Later in the meeting, Wheeler was elected as the council’s vice chair after a nomination for County Councilwoman Barb Girtman failed with a 3-4 vote.

Council members Ben Johnson, Fred Lowry, Wheeler and Robins voted against.

Wheeler, who represents District 2 on the council, won her race by a slim 656 votes in the November elections. Wheeler commented on the riots that occurred in the U.S. Capitol, calling the event a “travesty” and promising the public that the council would never allow similar events to occur in Volusia County.

“Each and every person on this council I know is committed to Volusia County and to the citizens,” Wheeler said. “We don’t have city lines. We don’t have east-west lines. We’re all working for Volusia County.”

Post said she is excited for the potential that awaits Volusia County, expressing her hopes for council discussion at workshops as well as the new council’s focus to listen to the people.

“Know that your voices are heard, but they can only be heard if you voice them,” she said.

Robins also spoke to unity, urging for the community to push forward. He said he wanted the public to remember the council works for them.

“You’re going to see some customer service, I believe, and some energy, like you’ve never seen before in Volusia County,” Robins said.

Some changes coming soon to the County Council could also include a change of meeting times. The council directed staff to explore the option of holding meetings later in the day to allow more public input.

Communication is a ‘work in progress’ ‘It’s a new day,’ said Councilwoman Girtman.

Communication, and the lack thereof, was at the center of Volusia County Council’s first meeting of 2021 on Thursday, Jan. 7.

It started when County Council member Ben Johnson reprimanded fellow Councilwoman Heather Post for an email to an employee in the county’s community information division that he believed to be a verbal attack.

Post’s email asked for the council to be informed ahead of time on what would be presented to the public in a press conference.

“We’re supposed to set an example and promote unity up here. It’s destructive, counterproductive and demoralizing to staff to be unfairly berated by a council member, particularly when you’re doing the right thing,” Johnson said.

The other council members were blindsided by Johnson’s comments, with Chair Jeff Brower and County Councilwoman Barb Girtman saying they were disappointed at how Johnson approached the situation. Johnson later apologized to Post.

Girtman said she recognized they were in a “high-stress, high-intensity” situation, and while she didn’t always agree with Post’s methods to air grievances, she didn’t agree with Johnson’s methods either.

“It’s a new year, it’s a new day, it’s a new opportunity to go forward,” Girtman said.

Post, who apologized to the employee, read her email aloud to the council, saying she wanted county staff to notify them when there are public meetings, and what information will be shared so that when constituents ask, she is able to have answers. Post said she doesn’t want to find out what the county is doing from the press.

“When I bring these things up, it is not meant to be an attack, it is meant to be, ‘Hey this needs to be corrected, and we need to correct it and move forward,’” Post said.

County Manager George Recktenwald said communication would be smoother if concerns are raised directly with him.

Later in the meeting, Girtman said she felt the county’s approach to handling the pandemic lacked a sense of urgency.

“You actually are seeing a more relaxed approach to this surge than the earlier time when the numbers were not as significant as where they are now,” Girtman said. “I’m saying that even for us this morning in this room — we had no mandate for people to come in and wear a mask, we have people not social distancing in our own room, in our own space.”

Post also had a stern exchange with Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo and Patricia Boswell, administrator of the Department of Health in Volusia County, over the lack of information about vaccinations for seniors.

Pozzo assured Post that county staff, who found out about the Daytona vaccination site via a press release themselves, now had a significant role in registration and planning for future events. Boswell apologized, took full responsibility and promised to improve communications.

School Board OKs salary increase for teachers Volusia County Schools reports The plan now needs the state of Florida’s approval.

The Volusia County School Board unanimously approved on Tuesday, Jan. 12, a tentative agreement that, if given the green light by the Florida Department of Education, will increase the base teacher salary to $44,335.

This action comes after the district and teachers’ union Volusia United Educators reached a consensus on the issue in December 2020, following months of negotiations and two impasse hearings.

“We batted a lot of things back and forth, and so we’re very excited we’ve come to this resolution,” said Mark West, Volusia County Schools chief human resources officer.

The teacher salary increase is a result of the passing of House Bill 641, which allocated school districts around the state with funds to raise the minimum salary to as close to $47,500 as pos-

sible. Volusia County received $9,975,410 to accomplish this, and 80% of those funds will be used to increase teacher salaries, while the remaining 20% will be used to increase the base salary of other instructional personnel, according to the agreement.

In addition to the base salary increase, the agreement outlines that all teachers will receive at least a 2.5% raise. All increases will be retroactive to July 1, 2020.

West said that once the state approves the agreement, the district will move forward with implementing the increases.

VUE President Elizabeth Albert said the union is ready to move past this issue and onto 2021.

“We have come to an agreement that I think is, by far, much better than where we started, and so we’re happy with that,” Albert said. “We’re happy that it ratified yesterday with a 95% approval rate from those who voted.”

At the Jan. 12 meeting, the School Board was also supposed

to discuss the creation of a “Volusia County School District Police Department,” but the item was pulled from the agenda by School Board Member Ruben Colon, who asked district staff review it and present it before the board during a workshop for discussion. The board unanimously approved.

The plan to create the police department would not have included the hiring of more employees, according to a press release issued by VCS last week.

It proposed utilizing current employees of the district’s Safety and Security Department who are already certified law enforcement officers.

“Many other school districts in Florida have similar hybrid arrangements with their own sworn law enforcement officers who work alongside school guardians and school resource officers and school resource deputies provided in partnership with other law enforcement agencies,” the press release stated.

Volusia County School’s graduation rate has improved for the 10th consecutive year, having increased by 3.2% for the 20192020 school year, according to a press release.

The school district reported the 87.7% graduation rate is its highest ever. It has grown by 9% in the past two years, and currently, five of the 10 high schools have a graduation rate of 90% of above.

Only two schools saw a decrease in graduation rate: Mainland High School, with a 0.3% decrease; and University High School, with a 0.5% decrease, as seen by a chart shared by School Board Member Ruben Colon on Facebook, who celebrated the significant 6% increase in graduation rates for Deltona High School and Pine Ridge High School. The school to see the highest increase was New Smyrna Beach High School, with 8%. Seabreeze High School improved by 0.7%.

“Graduation assurance is a top priority for Volusia County Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin in the press release. “It’s a major team effort by students, teachers, school counselors, school administrators, principals, and district staff, and we are celebrating this success today.”

The district stated that it credits the improvements to a “comprehensive strategy that focuses on providing individualized support to seniors, close monitoring of seniors’ credits and grades, more career technology programs, and the addition of advanced programs.”

The report showed a 3.1 percentagepoint increase in seniors graduating statewide during the 2019-2020 school year.

Jacob Oliva, chancellor of the state’s K-12 public school system, attributed at least part of the gains to the state’s waiving of testing requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Though graduation rates are up, I want to be very clear this increase must be understood within the context of the exemptions that were provided in the spring semester to the class of 2020,” Oliva wrote in an email to school superintendents on Thursday. “That compassion and grace for our seniors was absolutely necessary, as we took several steps to ensure that our seniors would have support and opportunities to minimize the disruption of the pandemic on their educational journey. However, it limits the interpretation of these results.”

Be a good citizen and clean up after your dogs, please Dear Editor: We certainly agree that most pet owners, especially dog owners, are not as responsible for their pets as they should be, but we now own an adorable Pembroke Corgi who loves to run on his leash to catch the salt water ocean bubbles that blow up on the sandy beach.

Well, to our sad surprise, on our recent trip to the beach, we saw many signs posted on the beach saying “No Dogs

VCSO HONORS AWARD WINNERS The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office recently honored three detectives and a local group with awards for their teamwork in fighting against prescription medication addiction during the agency’s staff awards.

VCSO Detectives Austin Littleton, Sgt. Joel Hernandez and Lt. Kurt Schoeps streamlined how residents drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the agency’s five district offices after researching how other law enforcement agencies collect those unused medications, according to a press release. The N.O.W. Matters More Foundation of New Smyrna Beach donated $4,475 for the effort, allowing VCSO to buy five med return drug collection units, which are locked, steel mailboxstyle disposal receptacles.

This was done before National Prescription Drug Take Back day last fall.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood presented the detectives with the agency’s Problem Solving award for this project. He also recognized Luis Delgao, founder of N.O.W. Matters More, and President Trinity Phillips with the civilian award for their contribution. N.O.W. Matters More helps raise money for people in need of treatment.

We were taught years ago in England to always carry a plastic piddle bag with paper towels to clean up after our dogs, if necessary. So being good taxpayers and good citizens everywhere we go, we are prepared. Also, since the beach waves usually wash out all things in its way, one could conclude that it stays cleaner than most areas.

Still, one should be responsible for their pets; cleaning up after them is good exercise for everyone, and it’s being a good neighbor to all — not forget-

ting that our state brings a lot of other people from elsewhere who bring pets too.

If a fine were posted as a lawful state rule, some people would abide by it. Surveillance cameras could be posted too.

Of course, not everyone would adhere to it, but, when others are around and seeing the misbehavior, they could quickly jot down the needed information and report it, that way they would be doing a good citizen act for all concerned.

This may be a lot to ask, but no one enjoys stepping in dog messes, so clean up after them.

JEEP BEACH AIDS FOOD BRINGS HOPE Jeep Beach recently presented Food Brings Hope with a $5,000 check to aid in the continuation of the nonprofit’s work in the community.

Since 2012, Jeep Beach has donated over $1.8 million to local charities through its annual event fundraising efforts, according to a press release. All proceeds raised are distributed to charities throughout Central Florida.

“We are grateful for business partners like Jeep Beach whose constant support ensures that Food Brings Hope fulfills their mission of serving the children of our community,” said Judi Winch, FBH’s executive director in the press release.

ORMOND MAN DIES IN HELICOPTER CRASH; FUNDRAISER SET UP FOR THE FAMILY An Ormond Beach man died in a helicopter crash in Jones County, Mississippi, on Dec. 29, 2020, and a GoFundMe has been set up to help his family.

Jason Krakowiak, 40, worked as a helicopter pilot and flight instructor, and died while attempting an emergency landing while flying for work, according to the fundraising site. He used to perform aerial firefighting, oil and gas support, government and private charters, as well as worked as an aerial saw pilot. He died a week after his birthday, and is survived by his wife and two sons.

have been devastated by the loss of their husband, father, and hero,” said James Martin, the campaign organizer on the GoFundMe page. “In these poignant times, Jyl is still trying to process the loss of her soulmate, while being the anchor for her children.”

Douglas Property & Development breathes new life into Town Center With the aim of bringing diversity, options, and opportunities to Palm Coast, residents can expect more groundbreaking developments in 2021.

There’s a lot of factors that go into building a healthy community. You need secure jobs, available housing, and a high standard of living. While good weather and the beach give Palm Coast an enviable quality of life, Douglas Property Development, Inc. President Jeff Douglas knew there was more to do.

When DPD took over the Allete portfolio in 2017, he and his team reenvisioned the 2,050acre Town Center as a livable downtown area and an innovative hub for med-tech jobs.

“To have a healthy community, Douglas said. “You need a healthy service sector growing with tactic jobs. There’s an absence of strategic, leading-edge companies here, and I think we can all recognize that.”

From Douglas’ perspective, attracting medical companies and institutions serves two purposes simultaneously: it fills the gap and meets the need for high-quality medical services for current residents, and it keeps young talent from leaving the county to find work.

The first step in attracting these key players was creating more housing. Last year, Central Landings, a 233-unit complex, was constructed, and The Palms at Town Center, an 88-unit complex, also broke ground and was 100% leased up within three weeks of its certificate of occupancy. Both complexes are waiting-list only.

Another 184 single-family homes are being constructed in Town Center, as well as 350 additional apartment condominiums.

“Diversity of housing and diversity of job opportunities is what we’re bringing,” said Walker Douglas of DPD. “Prior to this project, Palm Coast was lacking in multi-family and townhome options. We brought in more housing options that attract people with different lifestyles.”

With more housing options in the works, Jeff Douglas said DPD is turning its attention to partnering with medical education powerhouses like Jacksonville University and UNF MedNexus. Both institutions are opening campuses in Town Center that will focus on healthcare training and education.

“We are now on the radar of these institutions, companies, and the spinoffs that come from bringing these institutions here,” Jeff Douglas said. “We have great partners here already, like Coastal Cloud, Flagler Health, and ACI. Let’s give them the education, tools, product, and people so they can continue to expand.”

“Our goal is to get those medtech jobs into Town Center and Palm Coast Park.”

In order to get to attract more of those necessary partners, Jeff Douglas said Palm Coast requires leadership that shares that vision of a healthy community, like Mayor Milissa Holland, Representative Paul Renner, and Senator Travis Hudson.

“We have Matt Morton as a city manager, and Jerry Cameron at the county level who have both come in and reenvisioned

that the citizen and the taxpayer is a customer, not a burden.

And the companies that have come [to Palm Coast], done business and left over the years, are now coming back.”

With more housing and jobs coming to Town Center, entertainment is the obvious next step. DPD is planning 35,000 square feet of cafe, restaurant, office, retail space, and a separate art district and a regional design district. While it’s a lot of work now, Douglas believes that with the help of local leadership and the community’s support, this new vision for Town Center will soon be a reality.

“You’re going to see more key announcements in Town Center in the next 12 months,” Jeff Douglas said. “And I like to think in 24 months, we’ll be the envy of Florida communities.”

New management aims to restore Ormond Beachside Tennis Center’s popularity

T

he Ormond Beachside Tennis Center is now under new management, and the club operator said he is committed to returning the facility to its former glory.

Having been closed for some months due to COVID-19, new club operator Jan Buenner has a laundry lists of tasks ahead to renovate the clay courts in the center, located at 38 E. Granada Blvd. near the Casements. Buenner, who owns the Trails Racquet Club, acquired the city contract to manage the facility back in December 2020. On Jan. 2, OBTC celebrated its grand opening.

“It’s been actually a very nice and smooth transition,” Buenner said.

The city began leasing the center’s operations and management in 2008, and three companies have since operated the eightclay-court facility, according to city documents. The last operator, Coastal Tennis Life Co., canceled its contract with the city in June 2020 due to COVID-19, and

the city briefly took over management until a new lease was awarded.

The new agreement to lease the facility to Jan Buenner Tennis LLC includes the city paying a management fee of $12,000 for the first year, and $6,000 for the second year of operation.

Buenner said he’d been trying to acquire a lease of OBTC for the 12 years it’s been a possibility, and for him, 2020 turned out to be his lucky year. He was the sole bidder.

THE CENTER’S CLAY COURTS

Tennis Coach Seth Shreve said one of the benefits of the center is its beachside location. Being one of the only clay court facilities in the surrounding Ormond area (The Trails Racquet Club being another of its kind), its visibility from Granada Boulevard is a plus. Shreve has been teaching at OBTS for the last four years and said everybody has seen the courts improve lately, including the grounds maintained by the city.

“Overall, it’s getting better and better,” Shreve said.

A clay court requires fre-

quent watering and brushing for upkeep. Because of this, they are more costly and labor-intensive to keep in good shape compared to hard courts, and OBTC increased membership fees when it took over. The members have been “very gracious” about the small increase, said Nicole Leite, OBTC front office manager.

“It takes a lot to maintain clay courts and to keep them that way,” Leite said. “It requires renovation every couple of months of the basic playing surface.”

However, it is a surface that is ideal for older players, Buenner explained, as it is easier on the joints.

Ormond Beach resident Mike Miller plays on hard courts all the time. At 75 years old, he said he can tell the difference when he’s playing on a clay court.

“It’s much nicer playing on the clay,” Miller said. “While I play on the hard courts, I have people continually asking me over the last year, ‘When are they going to reopen Ormond Beach Tennis Center?’”

Now, Miller has an answer for them.

“We want to make OBTC the number one beachside tennis facility for the residents of Ormond Beach as well as all tennis-playing neighbors and visitors.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

OBTC currently has a membership of 33 players. In order to make the center viable, Buenner aims to increase that significantly in the near future.

With a higher membership, Buenner hopes the city will invest in future improvements to the facility, including better lighting and fences, as well a central amenity for players. Right now, the OBTC operates out of a back room of the MacDonald House.

“Once we have improved the condition of the courts and enhanced the pro shop in the next month or so, we want to make OBTC the number one beachside tennis facility for the residents of Ormond Beach as well as all tennis-playing neighbors and visitors,” Buenner said. “With attractive programming and a variety of events for members and guests we want to make OBTC as vibrant as it had been many years ago.”

eabreeze High School girls soccer team held Flagler Palm Coast to no goals until the final 16 minutes of the game Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Ormond Beach Soccer Complex, but walked away with a 1-0 loss.

The score remained tied at 0-0 for 64 minutes of the game. Emmaline Caputo and Andrea Gjoreska had five steals each while the team had a cumulative 14 shots on goal. Even though goalie, Avery Dellinger, had five saves, Bulldog forward Hailey Bovino navigated Sandcrab traffic and drove the ball into the bottom right pocket of the goal.

Head coach Alex Perez acknowledged that his team played better the

second half, but it was not enough to stop Bovino.

Seabreeze Sandcrabs tied DeLand High School on Friday, Jan. 8, in a scoreless tie.

The girls beat Winter Springs 2-0 on Jan. 12 and are now 4-3-1 for the season.

After a ball game plagued with turnovers, Mainland High School shut down Jones High School with a 43-36 win Jan. 7, at the Vince Carter Athletic Center. (Jones High School’s final score reported

Guard Isys Grady was first to score for Mainland with a free throw, but within five minutes, the Jones Tigers led the Mainland Bucs by 5. Mainland’s top scorer, Camryn Campbell, helped turn it around with 5 points and Mainland was able to outscore Jones by the end of the first quarter, finishing with a 12-9 lead.

Even though the Buccaneers allowed seven turnovers in the first half compared with the Tigers’ three, they held strong with another 12 points in the second quarter. Grady, who recently signed a Letter of Intent to play for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, scored 5 of the 12 points and dominated the boards throughout the game.

The Tigers were held to just 2 points in the third quarter. Mainland also had a low scoring quarter, but Lady Bucs shooting guard Hendley Welch made her third 3-pointer, helping them to maintain the lead. Both teams picked up the pace in the fourth quarter.

Tigers guard Kaliyah Reed successfully sank two 3-pointers boosting her team to a 16-point quarter.

TRIBUTES Julian Norman Kanfer 1930-2020

Michael Leon Seese, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Ormond Beach, FL on December 5th, 2020.

Julian Norman Kanfer, 90, died on December 23, 2020 in Dallas, TX. He was a lifelong learner and brilliant scientist known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, and penchant for ugly ties.

His sons are grateful for Mike’s stepchildren Vicki Hejny (John), Lori Benson, Douglas Benson and Melissa Biza (Charles) and their families, who showered him with love and attention until the end.

Mike was born on October 1, 1935 in Detroit, MI to the late Russell and Helen Seese.

He moved with his family to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1946.

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony Catholic Church and attended St. Anthony Parochial School. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and went on to the University of Florida. He served his country with distinction in the US Navy as a Petty Officer aboard the USS Princeton for it’s Far East Cruise in 19571958.

He was a member of the American Legion and worked many years in his profession as an Investigator.

Mike was known and loved for his strong faith and his strong devotion to his family. He was most proud of his four sons and was dedicated to spending time with them. His investment as an involved, caring father leaves a lasting legacy for his boys. He adored his grandchildren and was affectionately known as Grandpa, Grandpa Moosetach and Papa Mike.

Mike was the oldest brother to four sisters and cherished the time he spent laughing with them and their families.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Seese and sisters Margie Shaw and Leslee Hoover.

A first generation American, Julian was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 23, 1930 to Benjamin and Klara Kanfer. His interest in science began at an early age, and later grew into a career as an esteemed biochemist.

Julian served his country in the Korean War as a medic and upon his return to NY, he attended Brooklyn College to obtain his Bachelor of Science. He went on to George Washington University in Washington, DC to pursue his PhD in biochemistry. He did his post-doctoral work in Boston, MA and at Duke University. Julian relocated several times and spent many years doing what he loved - researching diseases. He was part of a team who pioneered neuroscience research at the NIH in the early 1960’s. He was able to realize his career goal in November of 1975, when he became the chair of the Department of Biochemistry, at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.

His research continued to be the focus of his work life, and he was known for his extensive body of work on Cancer, Tay Sachs, Gaucher’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and most notably Alzheimer’s.

It was in Winnipeg that Julian met his second wife, Beverly McNamara. Bev and Julian had a long, loving and happy marriage, involving much entertaining and

international travel, including sabbatical years in Paris, France and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Paris was a touchstone of their time together; a city they returned to and remembered often. Julian and Bev eventually retired to an oceanside condo in Ormond Beach, Florida, where they happily hosted numerous visits from their children and grandchildren. Julian’s daily 4-mile walks on the beach became a local event; a sighting of him on the beach signified a good day for many. In 2018, they relocated to Texas to be closer to her daughter Ann Cuddy. Bev passed away in June 2019 after a lengthy illness.

Julian is survived by his son Brian Kanfer (Mary); daughter Rachel Kanfer Frederick (Adam), stepson Edward Cuddy (Libby); stepson Jonathan Cuddy; stepdaughter Alison Cuddy; stepdaughter Ann Cuddy (Blair Phillip); grandchildren Addison, Slateon, and Cressa Frederick; and step-grandchildren Jessica, Declan, and Campbell Rose Cuddy, and Patrick and Erin Lynn; and not least of all - his beloved cat and companion Max.

The Quality Inn and Suites located at 295 S. Atlantic Ave. was sold to new owners in early December 2020, and the franchise hotel may become a Comfort Inn, according to the sale’s commercial real estate agent.

Real estate agent John Haley, of Coldwell Banker Premier properties, specializes in the hospitality industry, and said the hotel was an opportunity to buy a business that continues to bring in a profit in what is a historically popular surfing spot.

“It’s a great property,” Haley said. “It has a great financial history and the time was right for this buyer because he and she are looking into the future.”

While the hospitality and tourism industries around the U.S. have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and beachfront hotels are no exception, local losses have not been as dramatic as others, Haley said. Ormond Beach continued to see people from other communities book stays in hotels to enjoy the beach.

“We kind of bucked the trend as far as people continuing to come to the beach to get away from COVID and its implications,” Haley said.

The buyers are “accomplished hoteliers,” he said, and with the property being located across the former Florida Hospital Oceanside site, this area is bound to see growth in the coming years. The beachside has room to grow, and Haley said sales like this are one step toward achieving the goal to revitalize the area.

“I think you’ll see more of that,” Haley said. “People, buyers, are starting to come into this area.”
