YOUR TOWN TOM RUSSELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND In memory of former superintendent Tom Russell, who died Dec. 9, after a battle with COVID-19, the Futures Foundation is establishing a memorial scholarship fund to honor his 28-year career in Volusia County Schools.

Russell, who was the principal of Flagler Palm Coast High School when he died, was a tireless supporter of the foundation and the students, teachers and staff in the district. The goal is for the scholarship fund to be perpetual.

It’s official.

The $3.5 million renovation and expansion of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum is now underway, as volunteer leadership held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Jan. 22.

The renovation will demolish the existing 1998 addition to the 1915 museum, and replace it with a two-story facility, plus a rooftop terrace.

Construction is predicted to take 300 days, according to a press release, and the interior

square footage will increase from 5,708 square feet to 10,192 square feet.

“I am thrilled that our ‘hidden gem’ in Ormond Beach is now going to be renovated,” said Nancy Lohman, past board chair and current chair of the project’s capital campaign.

Her husband, Lowell Lohman, also announced they would be donation $500,000 to match their previous gift to the museum, making their contribution a total of $1

million.

“I think that the amazing response from our community is a testament to wanting Ormond Beach to continue to be a special place to live with outdoor and creative spaces that are unique and unexpected,” Museum Director Susan Richmond said.

The gardens will remain open with access from the south. Museum programming will resume online and at offsite locations.

“We are committed to supporting fundamental infrastructure projects and making sure that a foundational piece of the Ormond Beach community is not lost.”

First Step Shelter resident killed A resident of First Step Shelter died on Monday, Jan. 25, when she was struck by a white pickup truck while crossing U.S. 92.

The woman, who’d only been at the homeless shelter for 20 days, was headed to the nearest bus stop to leave for her first day at a new job, according to a press release by the shelter. Residents have no safe or reasonable access to transportation, the press release reads.

“They don’t even have a sidewalk or a crosswalk,” Executive Director Victoria Fahlberg said. “The speed limit here is 65 mph. Besides the danger in crossing the road, many of our residents use bicycles to get to work and we worry all the time that someone will get hurt. It’s past time to provide a safe way for residents to commute safely.”

Man dies in motorcycle crash A Palm Coast man died on Wednesday, Jan. 20, as a result of a motorcycle crash at North U.S. 1 and Hull Road.

Ormond Beach Police report that officers responded to the scene at approximately 5:12 p.m. The crash involved a black passenger vehicle that was turning onto Hull Road.

The driver of the motorcycle, Daniel Hardie, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No others were injured in the crash.

A

horse riding stable with a devoted following of local families may expand from 12 horses to 20, Ormond Beach city commissioners decided in a Jan. 19 commission meeting.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to allow a special exception for the expansion of the business, called Kings View Farms and run by Jordan Huntley on Durrance Lane, after a series of local residents told the commission how valuable riding lessons at Kings View have been for their children.

The approval changes the property’s land use category from “agricultural” to “riding stable” and includes a requirement that stables be constructed for any new horses before the horses are brought onto the property.

“Since she’s been going there, the difference in my child has been — I can’t even explain it,” said resident Pam West. “And all she wants to do is be there, and Jordan has taken her under her wing and taught her everything. ... Whatever [Huntley] wants, just give it to her, because she is so talented, and the passion she has for what she does and including children in this and making a difference in their lives is absolutely unparalleled to anything. It’s truly amazing, and I can’t thank her enough for what she’s doing for my family and the community.”

Another resident said her daughter had always been passionate about horses, and Huntley had gone out of her way to connect with the child.

“She’s really changed my life; she’s really changed my daughter’s life,” the resident said.

Resident William McCarthy said his daughter, 12, has been taking riding lessons at Kings View since the summer.

“She’s learned so much,” he said. “Jordan’s taken the time to take her to her first horse show to compete, and she’s really been doing a lot better at home and in school because of having this outlet.”

McCarthy had also bought a horse that’s now stabled at Kings View.

“This place here, all the stables are clean, there’s a hay room, there’s feed and they’ve got a good schedule,” he said.

By the time the proposed expansion reached the City Co m m i ss i o n , t h e c i ty ’s Planning Board had already voted unanimously in favor of it, and the city’s planning staff had evaluated the facility and recommended that the City Commission approve it.

The lone voice of opposition at the Jan. 19 meeting came from Wayne Griffin, a Durrance Lane farm owner who said he’s been involved with horses all his life and that Huntley’s property is too small for 20 of them.

“You can not keep 20 horses on 2 acres of land,” he said. “... It’s not good for the horses. ... The city needs to limit the number of horses you can have per usable acre.”

The property is 5 acres, not 2, according to city records.

There is an old rule of thumb: One horse per acre. But, as Huntley and one of her staff members explained, that’s for grazing horses that are feeding on the pasture and need a certain amount of grass to consume. It’s not for horses that are fed on hay.

“I can see someone who has a backyard horse, that they would say, ‘OK, that’s too many horses on that much land, on 5 acres,’” Huntley said. But she then detailed the horses’ supplemental feeding schedule and the regular rotations in which they’re brought into the pasture and exercised.

watering the horses daily. She submitted a “feed sheet” to the commission, showing the horses’ feeding schedule.

“Every one of these horses gets plenty of exercise, plenty of food, plenty of loving,” she said.

“I don’t see any issue with more horses; that’s just more loving, more feeding, more caring. ... To save a horse, give it a good life, teach it something — I don’t see no issue with it. ... They all get fed; they all get taken care of.”

Some of the horses had been slated for slaughter before they were brought to Kings View.

Commissioner Rob Littleton asked if Florida has a legal standard for horses per acre.

It does not, Planning Director Steven Spraker replied.

Littleton said he had looked up standards for horses per acre online, and had initially been prepared to vote against the special exception because he was concerned that Kings View is too small. But then he found an organization called the Equine Land Conservation Resource, which suggests a more nuanced approach to how many horses a parcel can support than a simple number-per-acre calculation.

“That was kind of my ace in the hole up here, because I was going to vote ‘no’ just a couple of hours ago,” Littleton said. “But the lady worker who turned in this feed sheet ... that’s what I was looking for and that’s what this group that advocates for a different method than horses-per-acre wants to see, and with there being no state law ... my mind has been changed.”

Mayor Bill Partington agreed.

“The thing that tips it for me is the fact that you do have a management plan,” he said. “...

Horse ownership, from what I’m told, is like eating potato chips — you can’t have just one, so you’re always looking to have more. My fear is that based on what I’ve heard tonight, you are going to do so well ... that you’re going to quickly outgrow Ormond Beach — and I hate to see that happen. ... That was powerful testimony tonight.”

one hesitation: That by allowing for 20 horses, the city would be setting a precedent.

“Ormond Beach is saying, ‘This is what you can have,’” he said.

Huntley and her family, Kent noted, seemed very knowledgable and caring. But what about other potential stables in the future?

“The key thing ... is the management of the facility,” Spraker replied. “So, one-horse-per-acre is basically if you’re let them graze and that’s it. That’s not what this is. This is a commercial business where they’re boarding horses and they’re riding horses, so it’s different than the traditional one-horse-per-acre. ... We’ve been out there. We believe this is well run. And if it’s not, there are safeguards.”

Commissioners Dwight Selby and Susan Persis had also both visited the farm.

“I’m definitely supportive of this for two reasons,” Selby said. “Number one, animals that otherwise probably would not be alive today are being saved, but more importantly, lives are being changed, and those testimonials were very powerful. ... To hear about kids who ... are struggling in their lives and they find meaning and purpose — and I guarantee you, I just know that these kids that didn’t want to do their homework, didn’t want to listen to their parents — they learn discipline.

They get encouragement. And heir lives are being changed because of what you’re doing.”

He had one reservation, wanting to ensure that stalls are available for additional horses before the horses are added.

Persis agreed.

“The passion from everyone that I talk to is amazing,” she said. “... a horse can make a difference, and someone that cares about a child to teach them about a horse makes a huge difference in someone’s life. It can be the difference in being a positive or negative life. ... It’s a wonderful addition to the city of Ormond Beach for young people, and even adults, to have a riding stable, and to come up and just be with nature. And I think that’s just a huge, huge thing.”

OB City Commission: Keep Osceola Elementary open ‘This is a decision that will affect lives for at least 50 years,’ Commissioner Troy Kent said.

The Volusia County School Board is ready to do away with Osceola Elementary and shift its students south to Ortona Elementary, in Daytona Beach. But the Ormond Beach City Commission is opposing that plan, urging the board to keep Osceola open.

Ortona is about 8 minutes south of Osceola, and when the board decided to merge the two schools, it chose Ortona as its combined school site.

At the behest of the commission, Ormond Beach City Manager Joyce Shanahan addressed the School Board at its Jan. 26 meeting, telling board members that Osceola is a beloved school community.

“We are committed to supporting a seamless transition with the least impact on the largest number of families, and providing the greatest long-term benefits,” Shanahan told School Board members at the meeting, urging them to reconsider. “... We are committed to supporting fundamental infrastructure projects and making sure that a foundational piece of the Ormond Beach community is not lost.”

She added that the city had recently offered to support the school district with $300,000 worth of stormwater work at Osceola Elementary, and that Osceola has more parking spaces

than Ortona and is larger.

But other speakers at the School Board meeting, including former School Board member Ida Wright and Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry, urged the School Board to stick with its current plan.

Wright said she was disappointed in the School Board’s willingness to hold a workshop on the issue.

“We are again spending money unnecessarily,” she said. “... Even if they’re willing to pay for what we have expended, is that the message we really want to send?

Do we want to send a message that when votes are taken, hard work has been given ... that if someone comes in with money, they can purchase a decision that has already been made?”

Henry and others said that the Ortona students who’d be shifted to Osceola if Osceola became the area’s only elementary school are more likely to be adversely impacted by the shift.

Henry noted that the district had committed to increasing equity in the district.

“The decision was prudent, it was equitable, and it was financially sound,” he said. “If we are genuinely concerned about equity, we should avoid sending students who suffer more significant challenges a further distance than those with traditional supports in place. ... If you change this decision, you will be adversely affecting children who have the

most challenging time navigating the modern academic world.

The decision was made in the best interest of the ... most vulnerable children — students who need your protection at this time.”

He noted that the proposed shift of students from Osceola to Ortona had met minimal community opposition, and that the district had determined that the Ortona site is more resistant to hurricanes and flooding.

Ormond Beach City Commissioner Troy Kent had raised the issue of the school shift at a Jan. 19 City Commission meeting.

“That’s a huge blow to Ormond Beach,” Kent said. “To take away an incredible elementary school in our community and to have our residents, and really the county’s residents, that live all the way up by Kingston Shores to have to commute all the way to Ortona Elementary has never set well with me. ... This is a decision that will affect lives for at least 50 years.”

If Osceola were rebuilt, he said, it would revitalize the beachside

area and attract more families.

Kent asked the commission to instruct City Manager Joyce Shanahan to inform the School Board of the commission’s position. Shanahan had also done so with a letter months prior.

“I think if Ormond Beach has an opportunity to keep Osceola Elementary, then we should keep Osceola Elementary,” Kent said.

“Not just because I went there or my five brothers and sisters, or my mother was the first graduating class out of there. It makes more sense from a traffic standpoint. ... I just feel like all people really have to do is drive around Osceola Elementary, and then go drive around Ortona and look at how the traffic will stack up; look at the design that they’ve come up with.”

Kent added that without Osceola Elementary, the city won’t have any beachside schools.

Board member Susan Persis said she was also in favor of pressing the School Board to keep Osceola open.

“We are committed to supporting fundamental infrastructure projects and making sure that a foundational piece of the Ormond Beach community is not lost.”

NO MASK, NO GAINS 9:56 a.m. — 900 block of South Atlantic Avenue Criminal mischief. A 36-year-old Daytona Beach man has been charged with a felony for breaking a computer monitor inside a local gym after he was told he needed to wear a face covering while inside.

According to witness testimony and video surveillance, the man refused to leave the establishment despite his noncompliance of the mask mandate. Employees contacted police, and the man threatened to come back and kill them. He called an employee by a derogatory term, and then proceeded to swat a nearby computer monitor, knocking it down

TIPS AND TRICKS 3 a.m. — 1500 block of North U.S. 1 Fraud. Police are searching for a suspect who cheated a local breakfast chain restaurant out of $100.

The suspect, described as a white male between 30 and 40 years old, arrived at the restaurant in a gray or silver SUV from the early to mid 2000s. He purchased $3 worth of food, and told the employee that he would place a $200 tip on the bill if they could give him $100 cash back. The employee agreed and the man left with the money. However, the prepaid card left behind by the man was declined.

The man is suspected to have scammed a fellow franchise in St.

Augustine using the same tactic.

JAN. 24

ARREST ME 9:37 p.m. — 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard Petit theft. A 38-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested for stealing a fountain drink from a local grocery store.

According to the police report, the man had been trespassed from the store earlier this month and said he stole the $1.49 drink because “he wanted to go to jail.”

He told police that he felt that if he did not get help, he would hurt someone, but advised officers that he would begin fighting if he was taken to the hospital, “as they make him feel stupid and like less of a man,” the report states.

The grocery store wished to pursue charges. He was taken to jail.

New development on U.S. 1 earns Planning Board support There are no submitted site plans for the property yet, but the Planning Board is hopeful it will improve the area.

A new commercial development is coming to North U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach, and the members of the city’s Planning Board are hopeful this signals a new dawn for that section of town.

“I think this city realizes this is the gateway and I think developers are going to hear it loud and clear that we want some changes made up there,” Planning Board member GG Galloway said.

The board unanimously recommended approval for a preliminary plat for an 18.17 acre property located at 1670 N. U.S. 1, near Destination Daytona, at its meeting on Thursday, Jan. 14.

The property owner, Destination Interchange LLC, has not yet submitted a site plan to the city, but the land could accommodate restaurant, retail or a gas station uses. The property consists of three different parcels, and has two land use designations: Tourist commercial and low intensity

commercial.

On behalf of the owner, Luke Kilic of Zev Cohen and Associates stated that the plans are to keep about 16% of the site for tree preservation.

Galloway said the city is lucky a local developer has expressed interest in that land. He said there are several properties in that area that need improvements, and that this developer understands what the city is looking for. He added that he hopes this development will lead by example and show some property owners in that area that they need to adhere to the city’s guidelines. City staff recommended that be handled through code enforcement.

Board member Lori Tolland expressed her desire to keep an eye on greenbelt buffers and landscape so that any developments that come in the future will enhance the area.

“As we develop it, I really want to make sure it’s developed aesthetically pleasing and keep as much landscape as possible,” Tolland said.

This was the board’s first meeting since all members were reappointed to their positions by the City Commission. Resident Doug Thomas was re-elected as chair of the board, and Harold Briley was designated vice chair.

Apartments project will be a nightmare Dear Editor: Regarding the Jaffe Corporation’s proposed plan to build a three-story, 10-building, 300-unit apartment complex on Tymber Creek Road in the middle of a great community of one-story single family homes, one has to ask why? To bulldoze all those pesky trees and cram as many people as possible onto the property to maximize developer profit?

This project will be a nightmare for those of us who live in and/or travel the area everyday. The nightmare will be worse for neighbors who live on properties adjacent to the proposed “luxury apartments” as they will have three story monstrosity buildings in their backyard.

We will all have to deal with the negative impact of a 300-unit apartment com-

plex, its high density which is incompatible with existing neighborhoods, increased traffic and environmental issues. We who choose to live here care about the area and hope the City Commission will continue to protect our neighborhood community standards against the developer’s proposed “best use of the property,” which will trample the existing rights of adjacent property owners. Developer property rights are not absolute and must conform to zoning and land development codes. The proposed apartment complex is over-development at its worst.

Volusia County is in line for more than $16 million in federal aid to help local residents struggling to pay their rent due to the financial fall-out from the COVID-19 pandemic. On Jan. 19, the County Council formally blessed the new coronavirus aid initiative by giving approval to the county’s Community Services staff to launch the grant program once the money is received.

Last year, the county allocated $27.5 million of its federal coronavirus relief funds for rent and mortgage assistance to Volusia County residents. So far, a total of 7,974 applications for assistance have been approved. Although requests are still being processed, the deadline to apply expired on Dec. 30. However, the new COVID-19 stimulus bill passed

by Congress and signed by President Trump last month included $25 billion for emergency rental assistance. Volusia County has been told that its share will be $16.7 million.

While approving the program Jan. 19, the council also authorized the hiring of up to 15 temporary county employees to help manage the program and process the rental assistance applications.

The positions – a program manager, two supervisors, nine case workers, two accounting specialists and one staff assistant – will be paid for out of the grant funds and will be vacated when the program ends.

The program will target people earning at or below 80% of the area median income, or AMI, with preference given to those at 50% or below the AMI. To qualify for

assistance, one or more members of a household must have qualified for unemployment benefits or experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs or experienced other financial hardship due either directly or indirectly to the coronavirus outbreak. Additionally, one or more people in the household must be able to demonstrate a risk of homelessness or housing instability. Landlords will be able to apply on behalf of their tenants who meet the eligibility requirements as long as the tenant cosigns the application.

Community Services Director Dona Butler told council members that underemployment can be a critical challenge for many.

“That can make a big difference,” said Butler. “You might not have lost your job entirely, but you may have had your hours cut in half or you relocated to another job that just doesn’t pay you what you were being paid before.”

In addition to rent assistance, the program also will provide financial help for utilities and home energy costs or other expenses related to housing. Households will be able to receive up to a year of assistance, but must be re-certified every three months to continue receiving assistance. In addition to the grant funds, case workers also will be trained to refer clients to other community resources for which they might qualify. The county hopes to have the program up and running on March 1. The public will be notified how and where to apply and the required documentation once the program is ready to accept applications. The county plans to produce a training video to teach clients how to submit an online application.

“It’s going to be challenging, because there’s going to be a lot of folks that want assistance,” said Butler.

Impact Development are clearly spelled out in the Ormond Beach Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which was adopted by the city in 2010.

The city’s land development code contains specific recommendations to apply low impact development principles to all land development in the city.

In summary, the recommendations call for the elimination or use of smaller retention ponds and an end to wholesale clear-cutting of trees and the use of significant fill to raise property grade levels. Low Impact Development attempts to “mimic the inherent nature of a site’s hydrology.”

Sadly, these principles have been ignored by the city of Ormond Beach in developments on Clyde Morris Boulevard, at Granada Pointe, in the Sterthaus area, and in the massive Plantation Oaks development recently annexed by the city, with no public

input in the decision. Plantation Oaks has now submitted application for amendments to the development order first approved by Volusia County for land adjacent to the Loop on Old Dixie Highway.

Why does our city government continue to ignore science and its own land development codes while approving waivers for developers to create these clear-cut sites and high stormwater runoff developments?

BRIEFS Volusia prepares for redistricting With the country’s population count for the 2020 Census now completed, Volusia County is turning its attention to the mandatory redrawing of the boundary lines for its five County Council districts.

County Attorney Mike Dyer briefed council members on Tuesday, Jan. 19, about the reapportionment process and the decisions that will need to be made along the way. The county’s home rule charter requires the county to go through redistricting every 10 years after each national Census. The goal is to ensure that all five council districts remain contiguous and as equal in population is possible.

The new district maps will be used in the 2022 elections. The council also decided Jan. 19 to follow a similar process that the county established in its last redistricting following the 2010 Census. That will include opportunities for public input, with workshop discussions and the posting of proposed maps in county buildings and online.

County Chair Jeff Brower said the goals should be to ensure the public’s involvement and making voting information as simple as possible.

“It obviously needs to be as easy as possible for people to vote and be involved in the system and understand it,” said Brower. “I think this motion covers council workshops and community input so the general population is invited to participate.

And they will not be left out.”

The deadline to complete reapportionment is six months after the federal government formally publishes the Census, which could happen in March. By charter, the council must approve the district map by at least two-thirds vote of the full council, or at least five of the seven members.

New county fire station in progress Volusia County Fire Rescue has 20 full-service fire stations staffed around-the-clock. In March 2018, the county’s public protection department presented a fire rescue service level update to the County Council. During the update, the council approved the relocation of the Rima Ridge Fire

Station, Station 18, to a site with better access to State Road 40 in order to improve response times.

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the County Council took the next step in relocating the Rima Ridge station.

While the exact location hasn’t been decided yet, the new fire station – which will be re-designated Station 47 – will serve the north-central area of the county.

On Jan. 19, the council awarded a $147,500 contract to Schenkel & Shultz Inc. of Orlando to design the new fire station. Under the contract, in addition to preparing a schematic design, the architectural firm also will evaluate four potential sites and recommend the best location for the new station.

The design will serve as a prototype, as the county plans to use it for at least one other future fire station.

Council OKs two new ambulances Two years ago, Volusia County’s public protection staff laid out a plan to eventually add more staffing and 911 ambulance units to the response fleet as the need, call volume and service demands dictated. On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the staff told the Volusia County Council that the time has come.

And the council agreed, voting unanimously to buy and equip two new ambulances.

Staffing for the ambulances will be added in March. And even more ambulances probably will be needed in the future to continue keeping pace with the call volume, Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo told the council.

“We need to add additional ambulances. This is the first step to, I would say, more in the future,” Pozzo said Jan. 19. “Because the county is growing.”

At a cost of $626,884, the two ambulances will be fully equipped for advanced life support service with medical gear, such as cardiac monitors and mechanical CPR devices. Volusia County EMS Director Jason Brady said the addition to the fleet is necessitated by the increase over the past year in workload and the distance that current ambulance units have to travel to calls. One of the new ambulances will be positioned on the east side of the county and one on the west side. The new ambulance units are expected to go into service around May 1.

On Nov. 13, 2020, Samnang In lost his life to COVID-19. He was only 41 years old.

He had big plans for himself. Big plans for his family. He was getting his law degree and wanted to be an attorney so his wife would not have to work so hard. He had asked his wife to move back to Cambodia, but the mysterious virus that shutdown Wuhan, China, had finally made its way to the United States, and his wife summoned him back before the lockdown in March.

Samnang continued his education online as the pandemic raged throughout Florida. The state began its phases of reopening, and the family, including his mother-in-law and father-inlaw who had moved from Cambodia to the United States in 2016, began to return to work. Even though they were hyper vigilant about following the CDC rules concerning the virus, both Samnang and his father-in-law were diagnosed with COVID on Nov. 3.

“We were so careful,” Sopheavy Meth said. “My husband used gloves, hand sanitizer and bleach.

Sopheavy, called Sophia by her customers, is now the sole owner of Java Junction in Ormond Beach.

She and her husband bought the doughnut and coffee shop in 2017 following the sale of their Holly Hill location. Due to the financial burden COVID has placed on small businesses, she is also the only one working in the store six days a week and closing two days a week at the Holly Hill store.

Following her husband’s death, she made a decision to cut back one day so she could spend time with her 4-year-old son, Lincoln. Money is even tighter now, and sometimes the bills do not get paid on time, but she knows it is important for her to be there for him. He misses his daddy.

The father and son duo bonded in 2018 when Samnang was forced to convalesce due to a heart attack. He spent his days teaching Lincoln a diverse curriculum of reading, writing, history and Cambodian. The toddler quickly absorbed his lessons and began to read with fluidity by the age of 2 1/2. Ask him who the 16th president of the United States was and he will clearly state his namesake.

He can recite all of the presidents’ names and where they fall numerically.

Always the advocate for higher education, Samnang paid for approximately 10 family members to attend college including siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews. His untimely death left one unfulfilled promise to pay, but Sopheavy has vowed to honor her husband’s pledge: She recently contacted his grandniece, reassuring her that she will find a way to pay for her college tuition.

“He was so good. I lost my goodhearted guy,” Sopheavy said, as her eyes filled with tears.

MUSEUM GUILD RAISES $35,000 The Museum of Arts and Sciences Guild recently presented a $35,000 check to the museum, a result of over 4,000 hours of fundraising events, according to a press release.

“The Guild works tirelessly and takes great pride in its continual support of one of Volusia County’s premiere cultural destinations,” Guild President Diane Rogers said.

The check was presented to MOAS Executive Director Andrew Sandall. ichael Hogan helped extend the Seabreeze win streak to four after the team defeated FPC 5-2 on Jan. 26. The Maxpreps Seabreeze Soccer Player of the Game along with Frazer Cross, Chase Doucette, Cole Miller and John Myers contributed to the Sandcrabs’ victory over the Bulldogs, scoring one goal each.

Hogan, or “Hogie,” as he is known by his friends, effectively utilizes this skillset as a midfielder for the Seabreeze Sandcrabs.

Being a midfielder requires the ability to envision the game as a whole, have unadulterated ball control, possess endless energy and be selfless or, in other words, pass the ball for the good of the team. At the beginning of the season, coach Jon Kinsler moved Hogan to the center midfielder position. Per coach Freidus, that move changed the tempo of their game and the way they play.

Ordinarily, kids fight over being able to wear a jersey that pays homage to a favorite player. 10 for Messi or 7 for Ronaldo, for example. Hogan took what was left in the Seabreeze jersey grab bag and now wears 6.

Seabreeze Sandcrabs played Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs Tuesday, Jan. 26 and within the first few minutes of the game, number 6 Michael Hogan scored the first goal, kicking off his team’s 5-2 victory.

“He’s a really big contributor to the varsity team,” coach Bowling said of Michael as he pointed toward his heart, “it’s in here.”

Meet Michael Hogan, a player who is at the center of Seabreeze soccer’s success this year.

Hogan was born in Maryland in 2004 and moved to Florida in 2007. As a toddler, his grandparents, Carol and John Hogan, would take him to the Ormond Beach Soccer Club fields when his older brother, Kris, and sister, Caitlyn, had games or practice. His grandfather was his first soccer coach. Since the age of 3, Hogan has been, as he says, “messing around” with soccer.

Even though he is only 16 years old, that is 13 years of playing the sport.

Both coach Rob Bowling and Seabreeze High School head soccer coach Elias Freidus agree that the time Hogan spent playing soccer with the older kids was time spent honing his senses and becoming aware of the sport. For Hogan, the soccer ball seems to be an appendage, not an object to be skillfully manipulated but one that has become part of his physical existence.

“Michael is one of the more skilled players on the team,” Freidus said. “He has clear awareness of the game and is always in the right place at the right time. His distribution skills are tops. but it is his tenaciousness that sets him apart to me.”

house on John Anderson Drive was the top real estate transaction in Ormond Beach and Ormond-by-the-Sea for the week of Dec. 13-19 in the Multiple Listing Service. Antonio and Mirella Deluca, of Ormond Beach, sold 130 John Anderson Drive to Thomas Leek and Vicki Dolan, of Ormond Beach, for $1.4 million. Dog-gone cute Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s virtual Dogapalooza photo contest raises $1,176 for local pet charities JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Local dogs and cats dressed up in their finest in recent weeks for the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s annual Dogapalooza event, raising $1,176 for Great Dawg Rescue, the Halifax Humane Society and the Sophie’s Circle dog rescue and pet food bank.

Another portion of the fundraiser continues as Donnie’s Donuts contributes $2 from every $3 Dogapalooza Donut purchased in January.

The event started in 2012 with a dog-themed art exhibition at the museum, but has since become a pet costume festival that raises money for pet-related nonprofits.

The event was held virtually this year, with candidates submitting photos and the public voting online for their favorites. Winners in the dog category will receive a custom wood and resin dog bone placard with their name on it, created by artist Hailey Nolin.

In first place in the People’s Choice dog category was Evie, 5, with 291 votes. “Evie likes to think she is a Volusia County lifeguard,” wrote her human, Ormond resident Melissa Mathews. “When her human siblings are swimming, she’s always on alert — barking and jumping as they splash and go underwater. Nothing will happen on Evie’s watch!”

The second place People’s Choice dog winner was Ibis, 16,

who died after a battle with cancer before the contest ended. She received 247 votes. “Ibis is the absolute love of my life,” wrote her person, Deland resident Cassandra Andrews. “... Ibis loved to get out and visit other people and places. Ibis got to go to Mardi Gras this year before Covid hit to celebrate her sweet 16. We tried to give her all the joys we could to enrich her life. ... She would have loved to have gone to Dogapalooza this year if Covid allowed.”

In third place was Wolfgang, 2, with 172 votes. “Wolfy is the sweetest, most lovable fluff in the world,” wrote his human, Sanford resident Nicole Suecof. “His interests include going on his daily walk, wrestling with his little sister, keeping everyone safe from the vacuum cleaner, and spending time getting his daily cuddles.”

The winner of the People’s Choice cat category was Miss Peanut, 6. Her human, Nancy Lohman of Ormond Beach, will receive an original watercolor pet portrait by artist Lisa Argentieri.

Nolin also selected four honorable mentions, whose humans will each receive a free four-pack of Donnie’s Donuts and Starbucks merchandise.

They are: Eddie, a 5-year-old dog from Daytona; Jazz, a 12-yearold cat from Ormond; Coco, a 14-year-old dog from Deland; and Franky and Daisy, dogs age 7 and 5, from Port Orange.
