The city of Ormond Beach will allow local restaurants to display temporary signage to aid with business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Restaurants will now be allowed to have one display, flag or banner — measuring up to 64 square feet — on their property with no permit or fees until the city returns to normal operations. Currently, the city closure have been extended to May 8.

City Manager Joyce Shanahan suggested allowing

temporary signage for these businesses, speaking during the city’s first video conference City Commission meeting, conducted through Zoom and livestreamed on YouTube.

The change requires a resolution due to the current code, and requires one reading, said City Attorney Randy Hayes. The commission can approve it at its next meeting on April 28.

“That’s about the earliest that we could do,” Hayes said.

Mayor Bill Partington said

he would rather not wait the two weeks, and Hayes said the city could implement the change operationally until the resolution is passed, and not enforce the current sign code.

When it came to discussing the extended city closures, the commissioners said they trusted Shanahan to make the right decision, though Commissioner Dwight Selby said he would like to see all businesses open back up as soon as the governor lifts the stay-at-home order.

“The data up to this point has largely been useless because so few people have been tested.”

Graduations will still occur Should social distancing guidelines remain in place come late May, graduation ceremonies will be held during the week of July 6, Volusia County Schools announced.

“After consulting with student leadership at our 10 high schools and their principals, the overwhelming response was a desire to have a traditional graduation as opposed to alternative venues,” the VCS release stated.

Graduation ceremonies are still scheduled to occur in May if possible. Mainland High School and Seabreeze High School’s ceremonies are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29, at the Ocean Center.

VCS said it will continue looking into the viability of other senior activities, including yearbook signings, senior breakfast alternatives, award ceremonies and college signings.

Residents donate land to airport Ormond Beach residents David and Antoinette Slick have donated a portion of their property at 15 Signal Avenue in the Airport Business Park to the city, to be used for rightof-way purposes for the new access road to the airport.

City documents state that Signal Avenue is one of two roads within the business park planned for the extension into the airport. As the property is being donated, there is no budget impact.

ass COVID-19 testing is now underway in Volusia County, as AdventHealth opened a testing site at the Daytona International Speedway on Friday, April 10, with the ability to test 500 people a day.

The tests are available to anyone who meets the criteria set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regardless of insurance. AdventHealth is covering the cost for those who are uninsured. A doctor’s order is not required, and there are no out-ofpocket costs.

Instead of a nasal swab, AdventHealth is asking those seeking to be tested to cough and spit into a cup. This allows for more people to be tested, said Dr. Timothy Hendrix, medical director at AdventHealth Centra Care. Nasal swabs are in limited supply; the cups are not.

“It’s a lot safer for our teams, so we’re really excited about this — using these cups, as opposed to the nasal swabs,” Hendrix said.

Health care professionals hand the cubs to the person inside their vehicle, who then rolls up the window and provides the sample, caps it, and hands it back.

The lab AdventHealth is working with is also relaying results within 48 hours, Hendrix said.

For the last three weeks, he’s been frustrated with the amount of tests available. By providing mass testing, Hendrix said, they’ll be able to identify where the COVID-19 outbreaks are in the community to better control the spread.

“If [people] can get this test and find out if they have COVID-19, they will stay home,” Hendrix said.

AdventHealth hopes to expand testing locations, but for the moment, the Daytona International Speedway is here to serve both Volusia and Flagler County residents.

Since AdventHealth announced the site’s opening on Thursday, April 9, 300 people registered online before arriving at the Daytona International Speedway, said David Ottati, CEO of AdventHealth Central Florida Division.

He said it takes a “tremendous amount” of infrastructure to set up a site like this, as well as a lot of people. For one day, he estimated, 25-30 people are needed to run the test site.

“We want to make sure it’s done well,” Ottati said. “I know this is a 30-minute drive from Flagler residents. It’s also a 30-minute drive from West Volusia residents. It’s kind of a central location.”

The Daytona International Speedways is located at 1801 W. International Speedway Blvd. in Daytona Beach. People may access the testing location through the NASCAR Drive entrance at the intersection with One Daytona.

The site will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. You’ll remain in your vehicle for the duration of the testing.

When AdventHealth Palm Coast first started to treat COVID-19 patients, an elderly woman was waiting to be investigated. A nurse, wearing a mask, peeked in the window of the room to check on her, and the woman made a heart sign with her hands and mouthed, “Thank you,” through the window.

The stress and emotion of the moment overwhelmed the nurse, who, like others in health care, have worked to show their compassion and care for patients despite wearing masks.

“The nurse practically broke down,” said Shawn Carpenter, nursing administrator at the hospital. “The compassion and caring are still there.”

Carpenter, a resident of Ormond-by-the-Sea, spoke with the Ormond Beach Observer April 9 about the extraordinary fight against COVID-19.

What is the morale like among the nursing staff?

It’s the best I’ve seen. This is the front line. We all know we’re a team, we’re a family, we’re all in this together. Yesterday, we recognized one of our techs on the floor for always being willing to go where we need her. They had a thank-you party for her.

How is life in the hospital different because of COVID-19?

We stopped all visitation, and that’s hard. We’re used to dealing with not just the patients but the patients’ families. We do have exceptions, of course: Anybody end-of-life, anybody that is serious, we bring in the family. We don’t keep them from their loved ones.

In what ways have you seen the community rally behind the health care workers?

It’s been phenomenal. A few nights ago the community came to our facility and sat in the parking lot in their cars and flashed their lights and beeped the horns. That was very overwhelming for the staff. The outpouring of making masks for us, homemade masks — that mean a lot. Being a small community like the Flagler BeachPalm Coast area, the outreach has been beyond words.

The biggest thing to help us as health care workers, is to follow the guidelines. Stay at home, social distancing, washing hands. If you stay safe, that’s less people that have to come in, and that keeps our staff safe.

What keeps you up at night?

Praying that we all stay safe. That the surge that’s predicted doesn’t appear as severe as the numbers are saying. Having said that, even if we do get a surge in our community and others, we and our sister facilities are prepared. We have everything we need.

ayor Bill Partington said keeping city services running as normally as possible has been challenging.

Twice the number of employees are working from home.

The information technology department created new servers in a matter of days. He said the public information officer has worked hard to get information out and that department heads and the city manager have worked well to coordinate it all.

“It’s unlike anything we’ve ever faced before, and seeing them plan for, implement and adapt all of their responses, it’s really been impressive,” he said.

Partington said he knows it’s difficult to practice social distancing, but that people should be patient and kind with each other.

“It’s adjustments that we’re all having to make to win the battle,” he said.

The Ormond Beach Observer recently spoke with the mayor about recent orders regarding COVID-19: Q: What has it been like to serve as mayor during this pandemic?

A: It’s been a completely new

and unique experience unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in all my years of public service.

When I say that, there’s been some positive things. Actually, a lot of positive things, and then just a few negative situations.

For the most part, it’s been challenging but also rewarding.

Q: What are some of the positive things that you’ve seen in the community?

A: I think the things that I have been most impressed with are the ways that our first responders, health care workers, and essential workers have risen to the occasion to continue keeping our city running as normally as possible when we’re all on a statewide stay-at-home order.

It’s been impressive to see the response of our businesses stepping up to change their business model and manufacturing patterns to create items to help with the pandemic.

On the individual level, seeing residents put together food drives and making masks in their homes at their sewing machines and things like that; It’s heartening to see that and it makes you proud as a mayor of a city to see so many people from different walks of life and aspects of the community pitching in to help get through it.

Q: Ormond Beach’s 32174 zip code has the highest num-

ber of cases. What are your thoughts on that?

A: The data up to this point has largely been useless because so few people have been tested. So I’m frustrated that we haven’t been able to get more people tested sooner, and I think the data is not giving us a full picture of exactly what’s going on. When you look at cities of certain sizes, Ormond Beach has 42,800 people, and so it’s unlikely that we would have more cases than say Daytona or Port Orange with 65,000-70,000, or more cases than Deltona, with 90,000 people. It doesn’t seem like the data is accurate. That’s frustrating, but we can only rely on what the Florida Department of Health provides us.

Q: Residents are allowed to exercise outside. The bridge is a popular spot, but the sidewalks are narrow. Is the city considering any further social distancing measures?

A: My understanding is we’ve put up signs on all four corners reminding people to keep their social distance. I’m very proud of our residents for voluntarily complying with that, but there’s been some ideas floated that just really don’t work and almost would cause more confusion than leaving it the way it is. I think right now we’re relying on our residents to keep that social distance or choose other places

where they can walk or exercise and keep the social distance in a better way.

Q: Volusia County closed its beaches last week before relaxing restrictions. If the city had control of its beaches, would it have been handled differently?

A: I understand why the county did what they did — they have to deal with a huge crowd from Orlando and potentially a huge crowd from Ocala coming over and using our beaches as their only escape when everything else has been shut down and there’s nothing else to do. The county felt like they had to send a really strong message that the beaches were absolutely closed.

Then, they were willing to pull it back a little and be compliant with the governor’s order, which some would argue was

controlling. I think if we controlled the beaches, we would have said that the beaches were closed to outside residents, and that if you had a driver’s license with an Ormond Beach address, you could use the beach within the guidelines outlined by the governor.

Q: What do you think is the most important thing people should keep in mind right now?

A: Following the guidelines works, and we are living in a time, 2020, unlike the Spanish Flu in 1918 where instead of millions of people dying, thanks to social media, thanks to great reporting, lots of information being out there and available, we can save a lot of lives and have a much better overall result than we would have had otherwise.

Germfree’s biocontainment labs have helped combat MERS and SARS. Germfree is no stranger to epidemics.

Before COVID-19, the Ormond Beach-based manufacturer had built mobile and modular biocontainment units for laboratories at the front lines of MERS, SARS, Zika and Ebola. It’s what the company has specialized in for the last six decades.

“We’ve got a pretty strong pedigree in it,” Germfree President Kevin Kyle said.

The company has installed many biocontainment labs on a global scale. With facilities in Hong Kong, Canada and Peru — to name a few — Germfree has over 100 laboratory installations and deployed a vast majority of the advanced biosafety labs in the world, according to a press release.

One of them is a lab in Singapore that is aiding in COVID-19 research. Before this pandemic, that lab was one of the first to culture SARS. At the beginning of April, Germfree was also working on a large modular lab that the

National Institute of Health Clinical Center requested for research of cancer cures, Kyle said.

Both were built in Germfree’s 170,000-square-foot facility in Ormond Beach’s Airport Business Park, and Kyle said the company has received a record volume for similar large modular projects in the last few weeks.

Where Germfree used to receive one request a quarter of these projects, in late March, it received five in one week.

THE WORKFORCE

Germfree employs over 150 people skilled in engineering, manufacturing and other related areas. Kyle said some of the world’s experts on biocontainment are working in the building.

“We definitely are trying to bring that expertise to the world right now — trying to make sure people are building things that are safe and trying to deliver just good quality and good safety,” he said.

One of their employees is Eugenie Owens, who has been with the company for 16 years.

She’s a main tester, and currently works to make sure the company’s laminar flow glovebox isolators (a unit that provides sterile compounding when dealing with potentially harmful biohazards) are ready for certifiers. Kyle said Germfree has increased production of these units, seeing as there is a personal protective equipment shortage across the country. These units would allow health care professionals to handle COVID-19 samples while minimizing chances for transmission.

These machines are complex, but important, she said.

“I appreciate what I do because I know it helps many people outside, and it could even help me if anything ever happens,” she said.

“I know it’s doing something.”

RESPONDING TO COVID-19

In the last three years, Germfree has deployed 65 mobile biocontainment labs, Kyle said.

Five of them occurred in late March and early April.

One of them was deployed to pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Co. in Indiana to work on a COVID-19 vaccine.

“Conceived, designed and made in Ormond Beach,” Kyle said.

These trailers take about six weeks to complete. The larger modular units can take anywhere from nine months to a year.

The complexity of the units means most employees have to be on the floor, though due to the pandemic, Germfree is allowing those who don’t interact with the units to work remotely. They used to have monthly social events before COVID-19, said condo Board President Jerry Cutter. They sat around, talked, danced and played music.

“We’re 156 apartments, and the only time we can get together is when we have a get-together,” he said.

With social distancing guidelines in place because of the pandemic, the board got creative.

Ryan, a violin player for over 30 years, had played at the Heritage’s socials before. But never like this.

Joining him were local musicians Philip Levy, Trienah Meyers and Dan Walters, all of whom assembled in the courtyard, and sang up to the residents on the balconies. Board member Pat Sample said getting together like this made sense.

“We all have to stay separate, and this is a way we can separate, but be on our balconies and be together,” she said.

Why did they choose “You Are My Sunshine”? Ryan said it’s because most people already knew the words.

“By golly, ‘You Are My Sunshine’ would be a nice sentiment in a time like this,” Ryan said.

Florida hopes to provide rapid-result COVID-19 tests JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Florida’s government hopes to soon supply each hospital in the state with COVID-19 tests that produce results in minutes, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a press conference streamed on The Florida Channel’s website April 10.

The state is also working to acquire new antibodies tests that detect whether someone has had COVID-19 in the past, he said, and is distributing personal protective equipment to hospitals and first responders.

“This has probably been the biggest logistical operation in the history of the state of Florida,” DeSantis said, with the state distributing more than 5.2 million masks, among other items.

From a warehouse in Orlando, the state distributed 2 million masks, 300,000 face shields, 50,000 containers of hand sanitizer, 500,000 shoe covers, more than 100,000 gowns and 350,000 gloves, Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz said.

Florida still has hospital bed capacity, DeSantis said, with 44% of hospital beds and almost 40% of ICU beds still available in the state.

The state has also screened 17,000 people entering from COVID-19 hot spots over the past week and a half, he said.

HEALTH CARE ‘STRIKE TEAM’ AT SUWANNEE COUNTY NURSING HOME

The Florida Department of Health currently has a “strike team” at a nursing home in Suwannee County, where 51 people, 30 of them staff members, have tested positive, DeSantis said.

Those infections have been traced back to an employee who was working directly with

residents.

DeSantis noted that 85% of the deaths from COVID-19 in Florida have been in patients 65 years of age or older, and said the state is taking special precautions to protect residents of nursing homes and other longterm care facilities, limiting visitation and requiring staff members to wear personal protective equipment.

More rapid testing, when it’s more widely available, will also help nursing homes because there will be less likelihood that a resident who is being tested will be waiting at the nursing home for an extended time before results are delivered, DeSantis said.

The state has launched a project to get tablets for nursing homes, so that residents can speak with family members over video technology like FaceTime, he added.

STATE FACES ‘CRUSHING DEMAND’ IN UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS

Statewide, 225,755 people have filed initial unemployment claims as of this week, and the state has 2,000 employees processing applications or standing by to help if needed, DeSantis said.

“This is a shock like we’ve never

seen before, so we’re shifting as many resources to this as we can to be able to meet this real crushing demand,” he said.

It took many months to reach this number of claims during the Great Recession, he said.

Typically, the state takes about three weeks to process unemployment claims, but the government is taking measures to speed the process, he said.

DeSantis said he expects another increase in the number of people furloughed around the middle of the month, from businesses that have been paying employees but have been unable to operate.

“My hope would be you’ll get the money out, but then most of these furloughed employees, once we’re able to start Phase 2 of this where we start to have the economy function again, that a lot of those employees will be hired back,” he said. “I would support a Phase 4 really focused on protecting employees even more, because people have been upended through no fault of their own, and I think it’s in our country’s interest and our state interest to be able to get people back where they were and back to being productive again.”

Volusia County optimistic as COVID-19 data trends lower than projections The council was given an overview of the data at its first video conference meeting.

There won’t be an anticipated shortage of hospital beds in Volusia County as the state approaches its May 3 peak date for hospitalizations due to COVID-19, a county research manager said during the virtual County Council meeting on Tuesday, April 14.

It was the first meeting the council held using video conference since the start of the pandemic, with far fewer technical interruptions compared to last week’s, when council members participated by phone. The county, following council direction to provide weekly briefings, had staff present updates from each division. Among them was Dr. Randa Matusiak, a Division of Corrections administrative service manager in research, who outlined the COVID-19 trends statewide and at the county level.

She explained that there is still a general trend upward, and that there is a lag in data as the number of confirmed cases are relayed to the Florida Department of Health. Statewide, the numbers have not leveled off yet, but Matusiak said based on projections, the county should be able to handle the peak number of hospital-

ization when it arrives.

“We are able and we have been able to manage the load fairly well thus far,” she said.

Projections for April 14 by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimated a bed need of 2,277 in Florida; Hospitalizations to date (as of Tuesday, April 14) have amounted to 2,909, which includes people who have been discharged.

Florida’s peak day for number of deaths is now May 6, Matusiak said, and IHME projections put the number for April 14 at 592; there have been 524 deaths as of April 14.

“As more data informs the model, that’s going to make it change and shift a little bit over time,” said Matusiak, who likened the scope of the projections to the National Hurricane Center’s forecast cones when a storm is a approaching.

The fact that the projections are higher than what the state is seeing is a good thing, County Manager George Recktenwald said; it means the social distancing and closures are helping to flatten the curve.

“That’s what driving this down and the data is now reflecting that,” Recktenwald said.

BEACH UPDATE Since some Volusia beach activities were restricted in light of COVID-19, following a brief total beach closure, Beach Safety has issued 1,200 warnings, three citations, and brought lifeguards back on duty.

For the most part, Beach Safety is seeing people comply with the restrictions, said Director Ray Manchester.

However, it hasn’t been easy to enforce these restrictions everywhere. The core area of Daytona Beach is complying, but the north peninsula has been Beach Safety’s biggest challenge.

“People have found that it’s a place to go,” Manchester said. “We’re also seeing citizens of Flagler County coming down also.”

Fishermen are also “coming out in droves” in all beaches, he added.

Manchester said they find issues when there is a large group with a single fishing pole.

Fishermen are required to have a salt water fishing license, something Manchester said the county hasn’t actively enforced in the past, but could if needed.

POLITE DRUNK DRIVER 10:20 p.m. — Intersection of 8th Street and Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach DUI. A 28-year-old Ormond Beach man admitted to police he “had a little bit to drink tonight” after he was pulled over for driving without turning on his headlights at night.

According to his arrest report, when the deputy asked the man how he was, the man replied, “Good, how are you?”

There were open cans of beer in the center console of the vehicle, the deputy reported.

The man said he was coming from a “buddy’s house,” that he knew he had too much drink, and would rather not complete the field sobriety exercises.

He was then arrested. Police also found cocaine in the man’s vehicle. The man was taken to jail.

APRIL 5

SECOND TIME’S THE CHARM 4:33 a.m. — 400 block of South Atlantic Avenue Trespassing. Police trespassed a 53-year-old man from a local gas station curb, three days after he had been previously trespassed from the same property.

The man told police this was incorrect — that he hadn’t been trespassed — and that he was drinking a cup of coffee, according to the police report. The man kept repeating he was also a resident of the city.

He was taken to jail.

APRIL 5

LONG BATHROOM BREAK 2:47 a.m. — First block of North Yonge Street Trespassing. A 61-year-old Port Orange woman was arrested for trespassing from a local gas station after she remained locked in the bathroom for an hour.

The woman exited the bathroom when asked by the reporting officer. The gas station clerk told police that he wished to issue a trespass warning, but the officer discovered one had already been issued within the last year, according to the arrest report. Police asked if he wished the woman to be arrested, and the clerk said yes.

The woman was taken to jail.

What’s it like running an animal rescue during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you ask the Raymonds, the answer mirrors that of many nonprofit organizations: It’s not easy.

Susanna and Phil Raymond, of Ormond Beach, are the faces of S&P Stables Inc. and Horse Rescue, and with 26 horses under their care, the coronavirus has impacted the number of incoming donations and viable adoptions.

Running a horse rescue is always expensive, Susanna Raymond said. In one week, they spend an average of $440 for six rolls of hay. Add in vet fees and feed, and the cost increases.

But, the Raymonds are passionate about keeping S&P Stables open.

“It’s all about the horses,” Susanna Raymond said. “None of this is about us. It is about them — giving them what they need.”

S&P stables has been a nonprofit organization since 2017, specializing in the rehabilitation of horses with the end goal of eventually adopting them out with a responsible rider. Though adoption fees have been waived

at this time, the Raymonds don’t just give away free horses. There has to be a bond between the horse and rider, Susanna Raymond explained. There are currently two horse adoptions underway.

“We want to make sure that there’s a success,” she said. “Without success, we wind up having horses coming back and that’s not good for the horse, nor for the person.”

HARD TIMES

Even before COVID-19, the Raymonds were going through a hard time. Susanna Raymond lost three of the tips of her fingers on her left hand during a horse trailer accident last Father’s Day. Outside financial support for the rescue slowed down shortly afterward.

“It’s been a rough half year,” Phil Raymond said.

However, they haven’t given up. The Raymonds have put up their house and land for sale in Ormond Beach, and hope to relocate the rescue to a 29-acre parcel of land in Putnam County, where they will have the space to hold training sessions, riding lessons and camps.

“Our role is just to keep doing what we’re doing,” Phil Raymond said. “We have to do the best we can.”

WHY THEY DO IT

Susanna Raymond has been riding horses since she was 4 years old. Horses have always granted her emotional support, and she’s been able to provide that to others who visit the stables.

One of the horses under her care is 14-year-old Princess Marie. Before coming to the Raymonds’ rescue, she had been beaten with wood planks and mentally broken, Susanna Raymond said. She was advised to put her down, but Susanna Raymond didn’t give up on her.

“It’s these things,” she said. “Why do horses have to suffer? Why does any animal have to suffer?”

It’s why the Ormond Beach residents are adamant on keeping the rescue open.

“It’s just becoming a very difficult time,” Susanna Raymond said. “We’re not going to give up.

This is what we do, but we’re just asking for a little bit of assistance through this difficult time too just like everybody else is.”

Dallas is one of 26 horses under thee Raymonds’ care at S&P Stables.

“It’s all about the horses. None of this is about us. It is about them — giving them what they need.”

Paulo, who also has a location in Ormond Beach. “We are creating a pattern model that includes a filter and a small piece to adjust next to the nose.”

Paula has opted for textile materials with cheerful patterns, “to put a smile on people’s faces as well.”

The company is now filling orders from states around the country.

“I stopped everything that I was doing to meet this need for masks that COVID-19 created,” she said.

“It’s much more important at this point, and my regular clients understand the situation. It’s all for a good cause.”

The seamstress is only charging to cover the costs of the materials and to keep the business open.

Paulo, a native of the city of Braga in Portugal, immigrated to the United States over 50 years ago and settled in Palm Coast 15 years ago. She set up Lucy’s Alterations about 13 years ago with her husband, Antonio Paulo.

Together they already have two additional dry cleaning businesses in Palm Coast (Crisp and Clean, 250 Palm Coast Parkway NE, Suite 204, 386-302-5909) and Ormond Beach (160 S. Nova Road, 386-673-4611), with their son Daniel Paulo joining the business. He’s the one who had the idea to convert the business to making masks.

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum is hoping to help you find your inner artist through the ongoing stay-at-home order.

The museum will be hosting a free virtual family art night every Friday, expanding the event that, for the past nine years, has been held on the first Friday of every month. This will continue until OMAM is able to reopen. Museum staff, art educators and local artists will create short, instructional videos to be released on the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s Facebok page at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays.

A supply list will be made available on Wednesdays so your family is prepared. Kristin Heron, OMAM curator of education, outreach and exhibitions, said the museum wanted to provide the community with an opportunity to do art routinely from their homes.

important to try and still be connecting with the community, even if the museum is typically closed,” Heron said. “We’re still here and we’re still available for the community.”

The first artist to provide a tutorial for the art night was Hailey Nolin, of Ormond Beach. She’s taught classes at the museum before, and though her medium of choice is resin on wood and ceramic, she taught viewers how to make a collage.

Nolin said she’s honored to have been the first artist leading the weekly virtual classes. Nolin has made resin art for two years, and got her start after discovering her love of the way the material flowed while with a friend who was making surfboards.

“Then I bought my own resin, failed a couple of times, and then now we’re here,” she said.

With anxieties and stress due to the pandemic affecting many in the community, she hopes art

can bring a sense of ease and help people realize they may have an undiscovered talent.

Following the debut on Facebook, the instructional videos will then be posted on the museum’s website and other social media outlets.

Want to follow along with Nolin and learn how to make a collage? If so, she said balance is key. Don’t use too many colors or paper.

“I think less is more,” she said.

In keeping with its mission to inspire the community through art and nature, the museum is posting daily photos from its gardens on social media and has also started online exhibits, one of which is comprised of pandemicinspired art.

“That was really a neat way to connect with artists in the community and see how the pandemic has affected their creative practice,” Heron said.

As hundreds of blood drives were canceled due to COVID-19’s impact on the U.S., Ormond Beach firefighters responded to the need by hosting one at Fire Station 92 on Friday, April 10.

About two weeks ago, the Ormond Beach International Association of Firefighters 3499 was brainstorming ways to help the community beyond their everyday service, said Union President Bill Baranowski. One of the firefighters suggested holding a blood drive, and the idea hit home with Baranowski.

A month ago, his mom was in need of a blood transfusion after becoming anemic while in the hospital. Luckily, she received it.

“It’s not something that is just for car accidents or some huge traumatic event,” Baranowski said. “People need blood transfusions all the time.”

Pat Michaels, OneBlood spokesperson, said many blood drives were canceled in the recent weeks because they were to be held at local high schools and universities — which host 18% of the number of blood drives — or were part of scheduled events.

“So when that happens, that’s a big drop-off,” Michaels said.
