63 Sovereign, the restaurant at 63 W. Granada Blvd., is in a house built in 1924, but the decor gives it a modern flare. This combination reflects the menu, where the three young owners take traditional dishes and add their own twist.

The entrepreneurs, all under age 30, Brandon Sheppard, Ryan Truong and Robyn Capece, started the business one year ago on July 4, combining a diverse experience in the restaurant industry, including Asian and Italian.

Sheppard said they want customers to enjoy culinary opportunities from around the world and unique meals they can’t find other places. They also have a raw bar and a large selection of wines and beer with indoor and outdoor dining options.

The menu has evolved over the year. It changes every four months to have seasonal offerings. Sheppard said you can get a vegetable when it’s not in season but it doesn’t taste the same.

“Our goal is to be as fresh and seasonal as possible,” he said.

Another change over the year has been to have Test Kitchen Tuesday, where they offer a limited number of new items and get

feedback from guests. It’s been so popular that Sheppard says they recommend reservations for Tuesday.

They’ve also added private parties, such as bridal showers, birthday dinners and corporate meetings.

The name, 63 Sovereign, came from the fact that they own the business themselves, without a financial backer they have to answer to.

“We enjoy being able to make our own decisions,” Truong said.

“I’ve learned problem solving and how to manage time. It’s been a great experience.”

The three also work fulltime in careers separate from the restaurant.

People say millennials leave Ormond Beach, but these restaurant owners are showing it’s possible to build a career here.

“This is where we want to be,” Sheppard said.

Aerial arts can be called “dancing in the air.”

If you’re not familiar with the growing sport, think of Cirque du Soleil, where the performers put on an artistic show while suspended on ropes, ribbons, hoops and more. It’s both exercise and a form of self-expression.

Barrie Michaels, of Palm Coast, has been teaching and promoting aerial arts locally for several years, and has now opened a training center in Ormond Beach. The July 2 grand opening of VertiFit Aerial Arts, 880 Airport Road, Suite 113C, featured performances by students.

The practice of aerial arts is well known in places such as New York and California, Michaels said, and it’s just becoming known in this area. She said children see aerial arts on TV shows such as “America’s Got Talent” and tell their parent they would like to try it.

“It’s a beautiful performing art,” she said. “A student learns tricks, and then puts them together with music.”

Michaels has been renting space in local dance studios, and she said her students recently won several awards in the countywide Flagler Youth Talent show.

She has promoted the sport by taking part in the Palm Coast holiday parade and events at places such as Tanger Outlets near Ormond Beach.

VertiFit Aerial Arts will also offer flow arts, such as poi spinning, hooping, juggling and dragon staff, all props that are manipulated in rhythmic patterns.

“It’s very meditative,” Michaels said. “It’s not as easy as it looks.

It’s a great way to de-stress.”

Flow arts teacher Mark Christopher Moore said they will help students make their own props so they can perform at home.

Michaels also offers parties, such as teen birthday parties, where everyone gets a chance to learn on the apparatus.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL

Aerial arts provide both physical and mental health benefits, Michaels said, including improved focus and coordination.

Casses are attended by all ages.

“A lot of people want an alternative way to work out,” she said.

“They don’t want to do a treadmill.” She calls aerial arts a fullbody workout.

“Most women don’t have a strong upper body,” she said.

“This builds it up quickly.”

She said a person can construct an A-frame in their backyard to practice some of the aerial arts at home.

There’s even a possibility of going into aerial arts professionally. Disney and Universal have aerial performances, as do cruise ships. Some of her older students are already performing. She will get a call for performers at a wedding, party or other events.

Michaels previously worked in high-stress positions in the corporate world, she said. Seeking balance, she discovered aerial arts and fell in love with the beauty and uniqueness. After moving to this area, she found she had to drive to Orlando to find a facility.

Certified in yoga and aerial arts, she began to promote the activity locally and now has her own studio.

Citizens and visitors alike enjoyed entertainment and activities, including music from bands like Pilotwave and the Not Brothers Band. The festivities also included a kids’ zone, food vendors and fireworks by Santore.

The celebrations stretched from City Hall plaza across the Granada Bridge to Rockefeller Gardens.

Professor by day, human rights crusader by night

To close out the spring term at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Assistant Professor of Management Jennifer Hinebaugh did what she does at the end of every term: She made her students write letters that they’d never send.

The letters were addressed to their future bosses. But, describing the students’ anxieties and hopes about entering the workforce, they were meant for their future selves. They served as statements of intention, meant for the students’ eyes only — and for Hinebaugh, who has read about 700 such letters over three years.

“If you can get your thoughts on paper, you’re more inclined to embrace what you’re feeling,” she said.

Hinebaugh, undergraduate program coordinator for the David B. O’Maley College of Business and an expert in organizational behavior, has processed all of the letters with software that identifies common words and patterns.

With that data, she believes she can glean insight into what makes millennials “tick.” Understanding

Giving a voice to the underserved is a common theme in Hinebaugh’s life. It started in second grade when, because of her dyslexia, she struggled in school and her teacher told her she’d be better off getting by on her looks. She almost wanted to believe her, but her parents pushed her. And when she got older and they let up, she pushed harder.

“I was a full-time faculty — I didn’t need to go back to school,” said Hinebaugh of her pursuit of a doctoral degree. “I was doing it for my own selfishness, even though I was unraveling a bit.”

She’d already earned a Master of Business Administration in Aviation through the Worldwide Campus, finishing in just one year.

Yet, here she was again, missing her son’s school play and graduations, and Skyping in to her own 36th birthday party, to go to class.

This is what proving her secondgrade teacher wrong looked like.

“I love students who are struggling in my own classes, and I always want to find out why,” Hinebaugh said.

“I want students to feel a little uncomfortable,” she said. “You have to break through that to grow.

That’s how you feel safe. That’s how you become brave.”

That’s why Hinebaugh’s students often work off campus. Last term, they taught ethics to fourthgraders and business concepts to K-12 students. Through projects like these, Hinebaugh strives to give groups a voice.

Millennials are often dismissed, and that makes Hinebaugh angry.

But her demeanor stays upbeat.

She has Mickey Mouse memorabilia in her office and lets funny messaging on her coffee cups make political statements for her.

But her mission — from making millennials feel heard to her extracurricular work — is serious.

“Florida is the second state in the union with the highest rate of human trafficking,” she said. “We don’t know it’s in our backyard.”

As incoming president of the Junior League of Daytona Beach, Hinebaugh works to raise awareness of human trafficking, especially pertaining to migrants used as low to no-wage workers.

“They’re basically treated like indentured servants,” she said.

“And when you’re a human trafficking victim, you only wear the clothes on your back.”

So Hinebaugh and other Junior League members wear the same black dress every day each January. This works as a conversationstarter, she said, and can shift one’s perspective. On day one, the black dress feels normal, maybe even fun. By just the fifth day, “you want to burn it.”

Hinebaugh, along with Junior League volunteers, also helped raise $40,000 last year. The organization erected a human-trafficking-awareness billboard on Nova Road, and worked with the Daytona Beach Police Department’s human trafficking division.

“We want women to feel confident and safe,” she said. “Most of us are really blessed, and I don’t think we feel like that sometimes in our society.”

Civil Discourse: A creative solution to ‘politics as usual’

chaos, anger and frustration, and even to the gradual loss of a democratic a way of life.

As a problem solver and inquirer into human nature, I couldn’t get by with acceptance of the self-righteous anger. I know we humans come by this and other destructive traits quite naturally, as a part of eons of being in survival mode. As history tells us, civilizations have been wiped out, indigenous peoples have lost their whole way of life and genocide still occurs. Little wonder that we operate from an attack/defend mode.

Perhaps we as humans will yet grow up into a new way of thinking that does not leave us in constant survival mode with others around the globe, in our nation, but most assuredly in our own community, where attack-based politics thrives.

Dear Editor: Civil Discourse has been a life-changer for me. It is a creative solution born out of my own search for a way through the chaos, anger and frustration of trying to influence livability issues in our community.

As a career social worker, I already knew that polarization, divisive tactics and making others wrong was not the way to solve problems; and, this realization did not keep me from thinking I was right. I discovered that deeply held beliefs, opinions, feelings and past experiences had only made me self-righteous, not right! However, this discovery did not preclude the desire to express and problem-solve.

There seems to be within us a call to action when there is a felt sense of injustice — a call for resolution, sometimes in the public arena. Ignoring the call to act may also lead to

Discourse Town Hall meeting, and also Commissioner Dwight Selby, who will be our guest at the next town hall meeting.

We invite public feedback and suggestions. Help us discover how to become more civilized, and to begin to listen to all sides of an issue, in an effort to reach creative solutions for what divides us.

Civil Discourse meets at the Ormond Beach Library auditorium at 5:30 every second and fourth Monday. Our next meeting is a town hall on July 22 with Commissioner Dwight Selby on the topic of “Ormond’s septic tanks, problems and solutions.”

Meeting was informative Dear Editor: I recently attended a very informative meeting at the Ormond Beach Library. Commissioner Susan Persis told of her hope for banning plastic

straws in our city. I learned a lot from other speakers who were in favor of banning plastics. Commissioner Persis even invited “Mr. Persis” to speak for three minutes. Soon after the meeting, my husband and I enjoyed a chicken dinner at Boston Market on Granada Boulevard and were happy to observe that they had only paper straws. We have many reasons to like Boston Market, including the servers like Kyle — now we have another reason: no plastic straws!

Ormond Beach resident named Elk of the Year in Florida Erika Barger was recognized out of 56,000 Elks.

Ormond Beach resident Erika Barger was named Elk of the Year.

Erika Barger has been around the Ormond Beach Elks for as long as she can remember.

She has memories of dressing up as a young girl and attending installation dinners, of not being tall enough to see over the lodge’s shuffleboard and of meeting new Elks, some of whom are still members today. In fact, Barger herself is a fourth-generation Elk. “I’m carrying on the family legacy, I guess you could say,” Barger

said. “But it really wasn’t a question of ‘if’ I was going to join. It was more of ‘when’ I was going to join.”

The Order of the Elks is a charitable fraternal organization open for members 21 and older. The national organization supports local programs, and the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193 is no different. Specifically, it aids the local boy and girl scout troops, veterans and other youth.

But for 31-year-old Barger, who is a practicing attorney, joining the Elks was about more than

just following in her family’s footsteps. It was about the camaraderie, the people and the role the Elks played in the community.

“I really embraced the impact that they have in the community, and I wanted to be a part of giving something back to the community through the charitable endeavors,” Barger said.

She’s been an official member for almost 11 years, and on May 24, she was recognized in Orlando by the past Elk Association State President Frank Malatesta with the highest honor that any of the 56,000 members of the Florida State Elks Association can receive: Elk of the Year.

Barger received the award due to her efforts as the state chairman of the Elks National Foundation Fundraising Committee.

As chairman, her job was to coordinate efforts between the 14 district chairmen across the state to fundraise $4.75 per capita in each of the lodges.

Not only did the Elks exceed that amount, but in total, the Elks raised $361,000. And because the state Elks get back $2.29 for every dollar donated, $822,000 will be available for grants, scholarships and other programs.

Barger said she was grateful to receive the award and looks forward to staying involved.

Residents gather to protest immigrant detention centers The protest at the Granada Bridge was one of 184 across the nation.

Over 20 local activists gathered on the four corners of Beach Street and West Granada Boulevard to demand the closure of immigrant detention centers, one of 184 protests held across the U.S. on Tuesday, July 2.

The Ormond Beach Close the Camps Protest was organized by Ormond-by-the-Sea resident Karen Pillar, who saw the movement from MoveOn, a progressive advocacy group and political action committee. The nearest protest to her was going to be held in Orlando, and Pillar decided to bring the movement closer to home.

“I think we need to raise awareness through the community so that people will take action — will call their senator, will call their representatives and demand that these camps be closed,” Pillar said. “This is not who America is, and it’s disgraceful that these things are happening.”

Pillar spoke about the detention center in Homestead, saying people shouldn’t be treated that way.

These local protesters are a handful of people among the many who participated in the national protest, calling on members of Congress to close the detention centers, refuse additional funding for family detention and deportation and visit detention camps, according to a press release.

For Pillar, the issue hits close to home. Her mother and grandmother were both immigrants.

“We’re a country of immigrants,” she said. “All of the sudden we’re going to lock them up?

It’s not right. It’s wrong.”

FROM BAD TO WORSE 2:50 a.m. — 500 block of Rockefeller Drive Attempting to elude. A 22-yearold Zephyrhills man who refused to stop after police flagged him down for speeding told officers he didn’t pull over because he didn’t want his insurance to go up.

Police spotted the man driving 57 mph in a 35 mph zone around the 500 block of South Atlantic Avenue, according to the police report, and the officers activated the patrol’s emergency lights and sirens. The man didn’t stop, turning west on Rockefeller Drive.

The officers eventually caught the man and conducted a traffic stop. The man was arrested and taken to jail.

RELIGIOUS CALLING 12:15 p.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard Trespassing. A 39-year-old transient man claimed he returned to a local supermarket — from which he had previously been trespassed — because higher powers advised him to.

Police report that the man said Jesus told him to return to the store, and that he made several comments about the world coming to an end.

He also said his family owned the supermarket. The man was trespassed earlier in the month for disruptive behavior.

He was taken to jail.

GOOD DEED OR GREED? 8:30 a.m. — 1000 block of Ocean Shore Boulevard Grand theft. Police arrested a 53-year-old man who was in possession of a stolen RV, which he said he had only moved to avoid it getting it towed away from a local dollar store. The RV belonged to a business, according to the police report, and the man told officers the owners should thank him for saving it.

Police began investigating the stolen vehicle after a church maintenance man flagged officers down, informing them there was an RV on church property with no license plate. When police made contact with the man, he said that he had to move the RV from another address, and that he was in the process of registering it. However, officers discovered the RV was stolen after running its identification number.

The man then changed his story, saying he and his friend found it in a local dollar store parking lot, and that it had been there for the past two months. He said they found it was empty and loaded with electronics, and that they found the keys, too. After they’d spent the night inside, the man said, a towing company arrived, so they moved it to avoid getting it taken away.

The man, who had been in possession of the RV for four days, insisted that they were trying to find out who owned the RV so that they could return it to them.

He said he was hoping to get a reward for recovering it.

Instead, he was taken to jail.

rad Montgomery was hired as Seabreeze High School’s athletics director for the 2018-19 school year. Before coming to Seabreeze, he spent four years as the athletics director at Pine Ridge and was a longtime girls basketball coach in Indiana. He recently spoke with the Ormond Beach Observer about his thoughts on the Sandcrabs’ athletic success during the 201819 school year and what’s to come for the future of Seabreeze sports.

Here’s what he had to say: Q: AFTER FOUR YEARS AS THE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR AT PINE RIDGE, WHY THE MOVE TO SEABREEZE?

I actually live not even a half mile from here. It was just a natural progression. I wanted to be on this side of town.

The boys soccer team advanced to the state final for the third year in a row, finishing runner-up.

Q: OVERALL, WHAT DID YOU

THINK OF THE PERFORMANCE OF SEABREEZE’S TEAMS OVER THE PAST SCHOOL YEAR?

Overall, the first year was a success in most of our sports. Some of our bigger team sports, we have a little work to do, but we’re in the process of doing that right now.

Q: WHAT WERE SOME OF

YOUR GOALS FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR AS THE SANDCRABS’ ATHLETICS DIRECTOR?

My goals were to keep things steady — to keep things moving in the right direction because this is a magnificent place to work. Their athletics department has always been run pretty well.

And it’s a process of just trying to make good better.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY AS AN ATHLETICS DIRECTOR? HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RUN YOUR DEPARTMENT?

I try to put the right people in the right places and let them do their jobs and to support them.

A lot of new coaches have come in, and we support them and try to give them what they need. We council them on how to run things in this athletics program.

Q: DO YOU FORESEE ANY

CHANGES GOING ON HERE AT SEABREEZE? ARE THERE GOING TO BE ANY NEW ADDITIONS, OR ARE THERE ANY PROJECTS YOUR CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

We have a lot of new things going on. We’re getting a new track, new additions to the track, a pole vault and a new triple jump and long jump pit that will allow us to host meets. We’re in search of equipment to host those meets, so as soon as they get done with the track, we’ll get that into play.

We’re also getting a brand new gym floor. It’s all new wood and a new design. We’re going to mesh tradition with the new and make it exciting for the kids to be in there. (Editor’s note: The gym is expected to be completed before the first day of volleyball practice on July 29. There’s no timetable currently for resurfacing the track.)

Q: JEFF LEMON, THE BASEBALL COACH, WAS YOUR FIRST HIRE AS SEABREEZE’S ATHLETICS DIRECTOR. HOW DO YOU THINK THAT’S WORKED OUT SO FAR?

It was a great hire. It was a great way to start off my career here. We showed great strides. But we have a lot of new head coaches here.

It’s from a philosophy of the principal who hired me at Pine Ridge.

You get the right person and you put them in the right place. Pat Brown presented himself as the right person to take over Seabreeze football. The direction he has them going in now, the work they’re doing this summer, is the right direction. We’re definitely supporting what he and his coaching staff are doing because in Volusia County, people talk football.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS HERE AT SEABREEZE?

We have such a great past and tradition here at Seabreeze. We have 22 state championships at this school. I want to focus in on that, but I also want to move toward the future of where our athletics is going. I don’t want to talk in the past tense. I want to start talking in present and future tense. Where we are right now, and where we’re going to go. And

you can see that in the coaches we’ve hired.

WERE EMBRACED YOUR FIRST YEAR ON CAMPUS?

I think the people were very nice here. They took me on and showed me how things were run here. They were very accommodating to me. They’ve been very, very good about adapting to some changes to the sports programs.

WANT TO DO DIFFERENTLY WITH HOW YOU RUN YOUR PROGRAM GOING FORWARD?

We’re not going to stay put.

We’re going to keep moving forward. We’ve got the best academics in the county. We’ve got the best fine arts in the county. And for a well-rounded student, we have to throw athletics in there.

If we have the best athletics program in the county, then we’re definitely going to be the best school in the county. It’s up to me and my coaches to make sure we move forward athletically.

Brown, the 6-foot-8 stretch forward, is headed to Jacksonville, where he’ll play for Florida State College. Rhoden is headed across the country to Long Beach, California, where the athletic 6-foot-5 guard will play for Long Beach State. The duo led the Buccaneers to a 27-2 record during the 2018-19 season.

The city of Ormond Beach’ Leisure Services department is hosting a co-ed basketball clinic from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on July 29 through Aug. 1 at the Nova Community Center, located at 440 N. Nova Road. The camp is open to kids ages 9-14 (as of April 30).

Cost is $60 for Ormond Beach residents and $88 for nonresidents.

ouble, double, toil and trouble has arrived at the Daytona Playhouse, as 36 local children take over the stage for the next two weekends for a comedy musical rendition of “Sleeping Beauty.”

Written and directed by Ormond Beach resident Kathy Thompson, this take on the classic fairy tale will engage audiences with humor, song and dance. The sassy Princess Beauty, played by Julia Ambrose, is faced with the dilemma of saving her kingdom by marrying the richest prince by the will of her ever-bickering parents, King Bumble and Queen Bea, played by Isaac Jordan and Jaylen Walton.

Playing a big role in the show are the witches. Alex Foege stars as Scariebosse, sister to Queen Fairy Flora, played by Chrissy Alexander. Ormond Beach resident Jessa Ward, 12, who plays one of the witches, said the show isn't your traditional fairy tale.

She's excited for people to see what the cast has put together.

“It’s definitely a very big twist on ‘Sleeping Beauty,’” Ward said.

“Sleeping Beauty” also features four dancers from the European School of Performing Arts in Ormond Beach, all of whom play fairies. One of them is 13-year-old Isabella Digon, and she said the cast and crew were very welcoming to the dancers in the show.

“I just felt like I had a new family from being here,” Digon said.

This is Thompson’s 11th children's show at the Daytona Playhouse after starting the program in 2009. Her husband challenged her to write a play after she was struggling to find a good children’s adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland,” and since then, it’s been published and performed in different places in the United Kingdom. Ty Lohman, a local real estate investor, recently purchased the Aliki Plaza, 378-404 S. Atlantic Ave., for $2.7 million and the Renaissance Center, 431-495 S. Nova Road, for $4.85 million.

Lohman said both plazas are well established and he plans to hold them long-term.

The Renaissance Center sale was brokered by his wife Tovah, owner of Starr Real Estate LLC, Ormond Beach.

“We are trying to focus on businesses in our own backyard that we could one day pass to our (son) Tristan,” she said.

Ty Lohman noted there is a lot of construction going on in Ormond Beach, saying the economic growth in Daytona Beach is having a halo effect on surrounding communities.

In the purchase of the Aliki Plaza, Lohman was represented

by Carl Lentz, of SVN Alliance.

Charles Lichtigman, principal of NAI Realvest/Charles Wayne Commercial, and Brad Gifford, who leases the plaza, negotiated the sale on behalf of the seller, Sunbelt Holdings Daytona LLC, owned by area investor Hugh Upton.

SVN will manage the Renaissance Center and Lichtigman’s firm will manage the Aliki.

Lohman, who also works with his parents, Nancy and Lowell, in Lohman Property Management, said he plans to make enhancements to the exteriors of the plazas.
