The National Association of Flight Instructors announced that NAFI member Albert Obi, of Ormond Beach, has earned accreditation as a NAFI Master Flight Instructor.

Obi is a flight standards and check pilot for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He began his flying career with the Nigerian Air Force as a young pilot at 19 where he graduated at the top of his class. He was further trained by the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot before continuing his career as an air force pilot in Nigeria.

mechanical engineering, a post graduate degree in aerospace engineering, and a master’s degree in unmanned autonomous

Born and bred in Nigeria, Obi is married to Amaka, and they are blessed with a daughter Alexis. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling and intellectual political discourses. Obi is a contributor to the world vision program and is a command pilot for Angel Flight Southeast.

He said he dedicated his Master CFI designation to his mum — Professor Patricia Obi, who taught him the value of family, determination and self-reliance.

The city estimates clearing the 385 S. Old Kings Road could cost $175,000.

After over two years, the city of Ormond Beach finally closed on the purchase of the 385 S. Old Kings Road property near Central Park.

But could the purchase turn out to be a money pit?

In April 2019, the City Commission voted 4-1 to buy the property for $285,000, with a stipulation that the city would hold $65,000 of the purchase price until the property owner cleaned up the land. The city closed on the property on July 27, for $225,000, said Commissioner Dwight Selby, but the debris was never cleared.

What’s on the property?

An environmental site assessment conducted by the city in 2019 found about 37 steel drums, used tires, and several abandoned vehicles that need to be removed; there is also an abandoned house and other outbuildings.

“There’s no way anybody else would have bought it in its condition that it was in,” said Selby, who believed there was no rush to buy the property.

Based on his experience as a commercial real estate broker, he said sellers are made to clean up the property before buyers close.

The city estimates that it will cost $175,000 to remove all debris from the property.

Selby said the city will be lucky to find a contractor who will agree to the project for a fixed price. It’s conceivable, he said, that the city could spend more money clearing the property than it did buying it.

The city bought the property for additional floodplain storage and its proximity to Central park.

The commission voted 4-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 17, to advertise a request for proposals for debris removal; Selby voted against.

Injured DBPD officer dies Daytona Beach Police Officer Jason Raynor, who was shot in the head on June 23 while on patrol, died at Halifax Health Medical Center the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 17.

“Now more than ever, we ask for all of you to embrace the Raynor family and the Daytona Beach Police Department in your hearts during this devastating time and pray that God will give us all the strength to persevere through this senseless tragedy,” said DBPD Police Chief Jakari Young in a press release.

“Jason’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Young asks that the public respect the Raynor family’s desire for privacy at this time.

Raynor is the agency’s 10th officer to die in the line of duty.

Church items donated to OBHS Via a unanimous consent agenda approval by the City Commission at its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 17, all items recovered from the former Ormond Beach Union Church building at 56 N. Beach St. will be handed off to the Ormond Beach Historical Society for preservation and display.

The city removed over 50 items from the church, including the two time capsules, one of which appears to contain artifacts from the original 1883 church, which was attended by John D. Rockefeller.

Other items saved include colored glass, organ pipes, Bibles and various plaques.

At Ormond Beach Elementary School, Principal Shannon Hay tries to do something different every year to greet students on the first day of school. This year, they placed yard art to welcome them back to campus.

Everyone — students, teachers and parents — were excited to begin the 2021-2022 school year, she said. Like OBMS, OBE is taking the necessary steps to make sure students can learn in a safe environment, and Hay said they are doing so while balancing a “welcoming environment.”

Every year, the kids come back taller and with more confidence, she said, and seeing that is one of her favorite moments during the first days of school.

“I don’t think that there’s a principal or an administrator in this district that doesn’t love a building full of children — the laughter, the smiles, the learning,” Hay said. “This is what we live for. This is what we want, and this is what we thrive in.”

Hay said she is looking forward for students participating in some of OBE’s traditions, which she called the “heart and soul” of the school. These include the Reading Counts program, kindergarten’s Polar Express-themed day and fifth grade’s annual kickball game.

“I’m very proud of my school and our district because even though we are facing some challenging times as a nation, I think we’ve done a great job of still trying to keep our schools safe and welcoming for students,” Hay said. “I think today seeing our students come back to school so happy just proves that we were able to do that balance.”

rmond Beach Middle School welcomed its students back to school on Monday, Aug. 16, with fanfare: music, balloons, a red carpet and an appearance from their Panthers mascot.

“Teachers made some signs and were standing at various locations, just welcoming them back — letting them know how happy we are to have them back on campus, and that we’re kicking things off positively and a good start for the school year,” OBMS Principal Susan Tuten said.

Overall, kids were happy to be back, she said. There were a lot of smiles present, and many students were looking for their friends, some of whom they hadn’t seen in over a year due

COVID-19 AND LEARNING LOSS The first day of school is normally an exciting time. But the added worry of COVID-19 has put a cloud over it, said School Board member Carl Persis, who represents District 4.

“Unfortunately, we have to start the year being as concerned about not spreading COVID as we are concerned about making sure our students have all of the instructional materials that they need, and that the teachers are ready and prepared so we can start the year off with a very smooth start,” he said.

Five principals tested positive for COVID-19 by the first day of school, he said, citing information provided to him by the superintendent. Mask or no mask, Persis hopes parents have engaged their children in conversations on the topic to avoid bullying or other distractions in the classroom.

“Everybody’s got to do what they think is in the best interest of keeping themselves safe,”

In a pandemic school year, that translates to plenty of hand sanitizer being made available, social distancing when possible and keeping classrooms clean.

Masks for students remain optional; however, all district staff and adults visiting any Volusia County Schools campus or facility must wear a face covering.

OBMS saw a large number of students who were previously enrolled in virtual learning return to campus, Tuten said. Seeing them again was exhilarating.

“To see their energy, it just kind of transposed itself on me as well,” Tuten said. “So a lot of smiles.

Even though I had my mask on, I was smiling behind my mask.”

Persis said. “We just hope everyone does that.”

While he is cautiously optimistic about the new school year, Persis is fearful about possible quarantines.

“There were students that missed another 30 days because they were quarantined three times,” Persis said. “Those students were quarantined while they were supposed to be getting their instruction in other ways, either with the Live option or other ways. That was not smooth, and I think we lost a lot with that because when they were quarantined, that put an extra burden on the parents.”

Bridging the learning gap will be one of the issues he and other school board members will be focused on.

“We’ll be monitoring them early and often throughout this school year,” Persis said. “ ... Because we have a higher percentage of students that are coming to school, we’ll be much more able to help them when they’re in the classroom with us, than when they’re at home.”

The start of the 2021-2022 school year also marked the return of self-expression through clothes.

The Volusia County School Board eliminated its uniform policy on July 27, and Tuten said most of the students were in compliance with the district’s new dress code policy on the first day of school. She saw a very small number of students wearing rips or tears in their clothing, and not one pair of flip flops, slides or Crocs — footwear that could present a safety hazard due to the school’s stairs.

“For the most part, it was just very colorful, very individualized,” Tuten said. “We might see some flowers with some plaids, and two different shoes — brand new shoes, but one might be red and one might be yellow — so they definitely were doing their style and that sort of thing.”

Her hope is that with more students returning to brick-andmortar (Volusia County Schools reported 59,887 students were enrolled in its 92 schools for this school year), the students will be able to redeem some of the learning loss caused by the pandemic.

OBMS is setting aside time for all students to either catch up or further enrich their education.

“We’re all looking forward to a very successful school year here and we’re so glad to have the students back on campus with us,” tuten said. “The teachers have been planning for a week now some of those engaging activities that will help the students learn at their highest levels.”

VCS REQUIRES MASKS FOR ALL ADULTS

After surveying principals, Volusia County Schools has made the decision to require that all adults, including employees, parents, volunteers, and other visitors, wear a face-covering (mask or shield) in VCS schools and facilities. This will apply for adults who are indoors and where social distancing of 6 feet or more cannot be maintained. Appropriate accommodations will be made for medical purposes on an individual basis in accordance with the ADA. This requirement began Thursday, Aug. 12, and will be in effect for 30 calendar days (through Sept.

11). This decision will be re-evaluated by Superintendent Dr. Scott Fritz as more information comes in, and VCS will relax the requirement as soon as it is practical.

Face coverings for students will remain optional.

Dr. Fritz is strongly recommending that all students wear a mask or face shield when they are indoors and near other people at school. Families have the right to choose the option of not wearing a face covering for their student(s), and no one should be harassed to do so per the FDOE emergency rule.

Dr. Fritz is also strongly encouraging everyone 12 and older to get the vaccine.

The CDC has updated its guidance for fully vaccinated people and also recommends universal indoor masking for students and adults in school, regardless of vaccination status.

Additionally, the Florida Department of Health has provided new information including new COVID-19 protocols in schools.

To provide as much information as possible, VCS has created a COVID-19 information website to share information about Health and Safety Protocols and to answer Frequently Asked Questions.

District leaders will continue to closely monitor the course of the virus and will notify families and parents of any updates.

Remember, anyone who is sick or experiencing symptoms of illness should stay home.

Let’s all work together for a safe, healthy, and successful school year!

Envisioning the future of Ormond’s parks What did the survey respondents say they wanted from the city’s Leisure Services?

shops to present findings: a joint meeting with the city’s Leisure Services Advisory Board and the Quality of Life Board, and one with the City Commission.

“We think we have pretty good, robust findings,” Barth Associates President David Barth said.

OTHER NEEDS IDENTIFIED  Adding a new gym, multi-purpose center or civic center in the city: The commission is hopeful this need will be one of the first addressed, as the new gym at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center is coming soon.  Provision of adequate pickleball facilities: Mayor Bill Partington said that while neighboring Holly Hill has a highly-utilized pickleball facility, the city should look at providing citizens with opportunities to play the sport in their own city.  Addition of a multipurpose open space: City Commissioner Dwight Selby suggested finding a use for the open field behind Nova Community Center. It is the site of the former landfill, so the city would have to explore ways to make that land usable.  Providing additional amenities in parks, restrooms in particular: Pocket parks, as identified by Selby, could be a way to address this need.

The update to Ormond Beach’s parks and recreation master plan is well underway, and with data showing what residents want, the city is beginning to discuss what the future of Leisure Services will entail, and how to fund it.

The master plan update process, which is being conducted by Barth Associates, is currently in the third phase of visioning. Over 1,100 residents participated in the second phase consisting of both a “statistically-valid survey” as well as an online survey open to all. The consultant gathered 402 citizen responses for its statistically-valid survey, and 646 people filled out the online one.

REFERENDUM ON THE HORIZON?

The three highest-rated actions wanted by citizens, according to Barth Associates, were: 1) providing safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities; 2) upgrading existing parks including athletic fields; and 3) acquiring land for preservation of greenspace, parks and natural areas.

In addition, according to Barth Associates’ survey, 69.5% of respondents said they would be willing to pay $12-$60 more annually to fund the types of parks, recreation facilities and programs that were most important to them. In the online survey, 85% of respondents said they would be willing as well. In comparison, 21.4% of people said they would not be willing to pay any additional dollars; 15% of online survey respondents also stated they were not willing.

If the city were to explore this option as a source of funding for parks and recreation projects and programs, it would need to be approved by voters in the form of a referendum.

City Commissioner Susan Persis said that, with interest rates being so low, now could be an opportune time to look at exploring that option.

“There’s a myriad of things our citizens need, and this to me speaks that people want it,” Persis said.

reational facilities in the west side of the city, such as a community center and athletic fields, were identified as needs.

The west side of town — generally considered the area west of I-95 — is developing quickly and many young families are moving into those neighborhoods, said Persis. Adding a sports complex is something she identified as being “near and dear to her heart.” The city also owns property in that area near Pathways Elementary, and Persis said the opportunities that could present are exciting.

“I think the sky’s the limit,” Persis said. “I think we can make something really fabulous and make our city even better.”

IMPROVING FACILITIES

The fact bicycle and walking trails were ranked as high-priority needs by survey respondents stood out to Commissioner Dwight Selby. He said when he thought of leisure services, the first thing that came to his mind were traditional sports facilities and parks. He mentioned fur-

ther examining the city’s many “pocket” parks, some of which many not have a bench or other facilities, and finding ways to include some improvements to those parks as part of the update.

Mayor Bill Partington said he is pleased with how the master plan process is going. He would like to see more “multi-generational” projects, like the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Seeing the different generations of families spending time out there during games and other sport events are the kind of activities that the mayor said makes Ormond Beach great.

“To me, a lot of the magic in Leisure Services happens with activities where you draw in all of the generations,” he said.

NEXT STEP

The next public meeting for the master plan update is scheduled to take place next month at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center, located at 176 Division Ave.

With voters overwhelmingly giving it a 20-year renewal, Volusia County’s ECHO program has a new set of operating rules. The County Council adopted the new rules on Tuesday, Aug. 17, with many of the changes designed to provide enhanced assistance to agencies seeking county ECHO grants to help fund local projects.

Since Volusia voters first approved it, the ECHO program has helped finance more than 220 environmental, cultural, historical and outdoor recreational projects throughout the county. The program and the small property tax that voters first approved in 2000 to finance the ECHO program were scheduled to expire this year. But a November 2020 referendum resulted in 72.4% support to extend the program through 2041.

Most of the operational changes approved on Tuesday came by way of recommendations from the county’s ECHO Advisory Committee, which conducted a series of listening sessions to get input and suggestions from the public. Among the changes, the maximum annual award for standard ECHO grants was increased from $400,000 to $600,000. And the maximum award for projects that meet the program criteria for exceptional grants was increased from $1.8 million for up to three consecutive years to $2.5 million, with distribution over a three year period. Another change increases the maximum amount a project or facility can receive – from $2.4 million to $3.1 million.

More narcotics and narcotic paraphernalia, as well as cash, were found inside the car, prompting police to believe she intended to sell the drugs.

She was taken to jail.

UNWANTED VISITOR 7:24 a.m. — 200 block of Arlington Way Loitering or prowling. Police arrested a 36-year-old Ormond Beach man who was found shirtless in a citizen’s home.

The homeowner told police that she didn’t know who the man was, and the man’s story to police changed several times. At first, he told police that he had been inside looking for his car, and he rambled about “yelling for people,” and tried to explain that he didn’t know why he had been inside the home, according to the police report.

While searching the home, an officer found the man’s shirt, shoes and wallet, as well as a bag containing meth.

The homeowner did not want to pursue burglary charges. The man was taken to jail.

NO HARM IN ASKING? 7:48 p.m. — Intersection of Bryant Street and Burns Street Possession of meth with intent to sell. You’ll never know the answer until you ask, but for a 27-year-old Port Orange woman who was found to be in possession of meth, the answer was no.

The woman had asked officers to destroy the drugs in lieu of arresting her.

According to her arrest report, police made contact with the woman after noticing her extensively damaged vehicle stopped on the road. The woman informed the officer that she had been involved in a hit-and-run crash in Holly Hill and that instead of calling it in, she was trying to get to her friend’s house, but her car stopped working.

The first officer that responded to the scene noted the woman was acting “very unusual,” according to the report, and was moving around inside her vehicle under the premise that she was cleaning it.

Police found methamphetamine scattered all over the interior of the car and inside a bag in the woman’s purse. The woman told officers, without being asked the report notes, that she only used opiates and not

the required cash match needed to qualify for an ECHO grant, the cash match requirement was reduced from 50% to either 20% or 30% depending on the size of the organization.

The county has developed its trails system with help from a $1 million annual allocation of ECHO funds. But more trails are in the works. Based on a recommendation from the advisory committee, the County Council increased ECHO’s annual trail set aside to $1.5 million. Also, trail amenities such as restrooms, parking areas and water stations will now be eligible for ECHO funds. And in an effort to make the program self-funded and provide adequate staffing to ensure continued success, the council approved the advisory committee’s recommendation to fund two ECHO staff positions out of the proceeds from the ECHO property tax.

“You want the fund, the ECHO fund, to pay for its resources,” said Councilwoman Barb Girtman.

“I’m certainly in support of it, and I think it’s the best way to go.”

Other recommendations embraced by the council came from the county’s internal auditor, who’s tasked with reviewing ECHO annually to ensure that the program is operating efficiently and in compliance with its guiding rules and regulations. Two such modifications approved by the council on Tuesday to strengthen procedures were: n Limiting staff’s authority for approving changes to a project budget to changes that amount to no more than 20% of the project’s budget. If the proposed change exceeds 20%, it must be presented to the advisory committee and the County Council for review and approval. n Requiring site visits and completion of monitoring worksheets to occur at least two times per year during a project’s construction phase.

DeSantis further downplays the virus and uses the “individual” freedom soundbite to justify what amounts to his do-nothing-policy that refuses to adhere to proven safety guidelines. Like it or not, there is no “individual” in his pandemic freedom; we are all in this together. For example: I believe good citizens who are masked, vaccinated, and

immune, expect freedom from harm; freedom to move about in public spaces without fear of reinfection by delta citizenvectors who refuse vaccinations and masks that protect them and others. These vectors may be asymptomatic, infect others, recover or die. Sadly for them and DeSantis, in the end, there really is “nothin’ left to lose.”

However, some of us are good citizens and comply with CDC Guidelines. We realize that we have a lot to lose. We know that vaccines and masks work, but not 100%. But we get the jab and wear our masks anyway for

our families and for every single person in America. That’s why we need more good citizens getting vaccinated and masking up inside public spaces.

Together, we may help build herd immunity, character and respect between one another. That is something. And it is free.

ADOPTION EVENT The Halifax Humane Society will be participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s emergency “Empty the Shelters” adoption event, to be held Aug. 16-22.

HHS will be offering $5 adoption fees for adult cats and dogs, as well as $5 fees for senior dogs.

Food, school supplies, vaccines Food Brings Hope helps students get ready for school.

Food Brings Hope on Tuesday, Aug. 12, worked to ensure local families had what they needed for a successful, and safe, first day of school.

The nonprofit distributed the community with 300 bags of food and school supplies during its Back to School Supply Drive on Thursday, Aug. 12, at Mainland High School. Additionally, Food Brings Hope, thanks to a partnership with AdventHealth and The Volusia County Department of Health, presented the public with an opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Christian Calderon and his brother Isaac were among those who took the opportunity. How did Christian feel after receiving the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine?

“Safer,” he said.

For his mother, Lily Calderon, the decision to get vaccinated was reached due to outbreaks caused by the delta variant.

“My husband and I didn’t want it in the first place, but if they’re getting it, we might as well get it with them,” she said. “We got ours yesterday, and now they’re getting theirs.”

She didn’t expect the food and school supplies provided by Food Brings Hope. People who received the vaccine also got a food gift card and a 10-pound ham.

“Obviously, eventually we want to be in every school so the fact that we are in over 30 schools now, we are getting closer and closer to our mission,” Hosseini said. “We want to make sure we are there for every homeless and economically-disadvantaged student in our county.”

A

smattering of clouds flecked the blue summer sky as the waves beckoned six Surfari campers and their instructors into the ocean at the Granada Boulevard beach approach on Thursday, Aug. 12.

The surf camp season came to a close as Volusia County students headed back to school on Monday, Aug. 16.

The Surfari Surf School has been owned and operated by Rick Gehris for 21 years. He currently maintains two locations — one in Ormond Beach and his original school in San Diego, California.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida with a business degree in 1995, Gehris struggled to find his career path in Ormond Beach and decided to move to Hawaii to try his luck.

En route, he stopped in San Diego where he fell in love with the area and stayed. He found a job immediately, got back into lifeguarding and began to work with kids through the local junior lifeguard program.

Gehris’ zest for entrepreneurship led him to successfully run his own surf school from his Mission Beach apartment, followed by a serendipitous meeting with a property manager who saw him peeking into the window of a vacant retail space. He began

leasing the space in 2000 for his surf school and after a consistent increase in business, he eventually made it back to his hometown to open the second location where he has found a zen-like existence.

“I’m no spring chicken anymore,” he said. “I’m 51 years old and taking care of my health is the most important thing. Having a healthy routine when I wake up in the morning is key. Before I setup for camp, I swim with the lifeguards then do some training on my own. The feeling of jumping in the water almost feels like flying. It’s so nice and relaxing.”

Surfari surf camps usually consist of kids who are visiting

from all over the United States.

This week, a surfer from Canada dropped in for a day.

Camper Ivan Iorgulescu moved from Los Angeles three months ago, where he had accrued two years of experience surfing.

“I like the waves a lot there,” he said. “But I don’t like the beaches.

Too much tar. My parents had to throw out so much clothing. Me and my parents like it way better here because we really like nature, the water and fishing.”

While surf camps have come to a close, the business will continue to offer surf lessons, surf board, paddle board and kayak rentals, including e-bikes.

Camp instructor Aydin Every has been going to Surfari since he was 14 years old.

Campbell might also ask questions a college coach is not accustomed to hearing, like, “How’s

your bio-engineering program?”

While many players in Campbell’s position are thinking about a career in football — as a player or a coach — the Bucs’ safety/quarterback is also thinking about his life after football.

“I like academic schools,” the senior said. “They’ll be better for my future.”

It’s no surprise that one of his offers has come from Dartmouth, an Ivy League School.

Campbell is not the only standout on the Bucs football team whose classroom focus equals or exceeds his football focus.

Cornerback Kalyb Evans has a 3.9 grade point average and sub 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash.

Wide receiver Nick Antoine may not be as fast as Evans, but he has a 4.4 benchmark of his own.

That’s his GPA. How does one achieve a 4.4 GPA? You just take AP and honors classes and earn an A in every class, he says.

“Classroom is very important,” Antoine said. “We all know that.

You can’t do anything without grades. Grades come first, always.”

tially, it’s the same for everyone: “He plays it all.”

“Really. It’s like we all do everything,” he said.

Head coach Pat Brown believes Seabreeze’s secondary is the best in the state. With four returning starters plus Division I recruit Chris Lewis shifting back to defense from wide receiver, it’s hard to argue that the Sandcrabs don’t have the potential to be one of the toughest defenses in Central Florida to throw against.

But if there is one word that best describes this talented group it is versatility.

“Our DBs are crazy,” said Lewis, who has offers from Navy, Central Michigan, Eastern Kentucky and Iowa State. “We can all do

everything. We can hit, we can run, we can play the ball in the air.

We’re all physical, fast and smart football players.”

They have to be smart or they wouldn’t get on the field, their coach says.

“All my (defensive backs) move around,” said Brown, who doubles as the team’s defensive coordinator. “They’ve got to know every position. But I put pressure on them. I tell them, ‘I’m not going to just throw you out there. You

have to know the whole defense.

And the quicker you know the whole defense the more ability I have to move you around.’ ” Brown compares this practice to matchups in basketball. Eli Campbell might be a good matchup at

cornerback one week. His older brother, Dimitri Campbell, might be a better fit the next game.

Versatility also helps the players get evaluated by college recruiters, Brown says.

MAINLAND has a 4.2 GPA. Defensive back Jordan Porter, who has a 3.7 GPA, also plans to major in finance.

Left tackle Jake Fassenden, who has a 3.6 GPA, is undecided whether to major in emergency management services or go on to medical school and become a radiologist.

Defensive tackle Isaiah Morrison, who has a 3.7 GPA and has several football scholarship offers, said he wants to major in sports management so when football is over he can still be around the sport.

“It always helps when your best players are the guys who have great academics,” said Mainland coach Travis Roland. “Our best players are our leaders and have been voted to be captains and they’re also high academic guys.

“It makes it really easy to talk about getting good grades when your best players are setting an example. When they see their leaders are having success on the field, getting good grades and getting offers, it’s an easy sell in today’s world.”

It’s all about work ethic, the players say.

“In Daytona we have to work for everything,” Antoine said.

“So nothing’s going to be handed to you. If you’ve got good family your family’s going to push you, but you have to push yourself as well. If you want to get somewhere and you don’t want to be stuck here for the rest of your life then you’ve got to work and push yourself. That’s in the classroom and on the football field, whatever you do.”

Roland was a leader himself when he played at Mainland. He helped lead the Bucs to their only state championship in 2003 and

TRAVIS ROLAND: BACK WHERE HE STARTED Although he never moved far away, Travis Roland is back home.

Roland helped lead Mainland to its only state football championship in 2003. From there he played defensive back for four years at nearby Bethune-Cookman and then began his coaching career.

After four successful seasons as the head coach at Flagler Palm Coast High School, the Mainland job opened up this year and Roland jumped at it. Becoming the head coach at his alma mater is a dream come true. But heading into his first season he’s also starting to feel the pressure.

“It’s pretty awesome,” he said. “But it’s real sometimes. I have to snap out of it really quickly. I know I have a job to do. We have a tough schedule and we have to do our part to keep the legacy alive.”

Roland doesn’t want Mainland’s streak of 27 consecutive years of making the playoffs — the most by a Florida public school — to end under his watch. His players aren’t worried.

“He knows what it takes to get there,” defensive back Jordan Porter said. “So he can get there again.”

Leaning on your teammates is also important, Morrison said.

“I feel we all encourage each other,” he said. “Even if one of us messes up, even if one has something going on, we’re all there for each other. Our chemistry is key for our team because we all grew up together. We all have such a strong love for each other that, say one of us messes up it’s, ‘I still love you. You’re still my brother.

Ormond resident has worked 12 Olympics, but none like Tokyo Were you able to take in some sites, sample the food and culture?

rmond Beach resident Billy Gahagan has worked behind the scenes for NBC at 12 Olympic Games going back to the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games.

But nothing prepared him for the recent 2020 Games in Tokyo, which were postponed a year and held under a partial COVID-19 lockdown this summer. Gahagan, an engineering equipment supervisor, returns home Aug. 22 and will then have to make a quick turnaround to prepare for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

He spoke to the Observer via email from Japan days after attending the closing ceremonies.

What is your favorite part of the job?

I really love the fast pace of my job. When I am putting together a request from a venue tech manager or one of our people, knowing that it’s part of the bigger picture, it’s satisfying to me.

When do you start preparing for the Beijing Winter Games?

My job usually begins a year out for each Games. However, with the Winter Olympics being just six months away there’s no rest for the weary. I’ll get home and have just enough time to get over the jet lag before I head back up to Connecticut to continue prepping for Beijing.

This Olympics was like none other. What were some of the

challenges you and your team faced?

I think one of the hardest things for us was the postponement of the Games. It gave us time to think and re-think about what we were going to do to make this Games special for everyone.

Couple that with everything COVID related from travel, social distancing and the like.

Logistically, our people climbed mountains and conquered them.

Our team did an amazing job.

This Games will be one that none of us will forget.

What was it like to attend events with few spectators?

It was tough to really take in and enjoy. The gold medal baseball game was really neat to watch.

One of my biggest disappointments is that I couldn’t say I did karaoke in a Japanese bar. We were able to get out and see a couple of temples and some of the sites. Eight years ago when they announced Tokyo would host the Olympics, I remember telling my wife (Debbie) and family and friends, “I won’t eat raw sushi until I’m in Tokyo, Japan.” I had had sushi, but I never had it raw. We found a place that was just amazing. A young lady, 25 years old, had been doing sushi for three months and found flavors that complement each other, and you name it, I ate mackerel, salmon, tuna, barracuda, scallop. She fed me some raw duck. I watched everyone at the table eat it first and then I tried it. I said it was delicious, not for me, but it was delicious.

attended where the host country won its (signature) event. In Vancouver 2010, Canada won hockey. In Rio 2016, Brazil won soccer. And in Tokyo, Japan won baseball. So I was happy and sad at the same time. This was a tough Games for everybody, for every country, for every athlete, for every spectator, sponsor, for every broadcaster. There were no visitors, no fans in the stands.

These athletes trained and waited for this moment, some of them all their lives to represent their country. There were a couple hundred people there (at the gold medal baseball game), but if that was a normal setting, that stadium would have been absolutely electrifying with all the fans. So I’m happy for them and sad at the same time.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY OF ORMOND BEACH!

Personally, how did this trip compare to your previous Olympic experiences?

Each Games is special and meaningful in its own way. But, this particular Games was like no other. With the restrictions placed on the city we couldn’t really play as hard as we worked.

We love to take in everything when we are in the host city but we just couldn’t. It made a long trip seem even longer.

Does it ever get old?

Not … even … close.

How will you remember Tokyo and these Games?

Tokyo is a really neat city. I just wish we could have enjoyed her more. The craziness leading up to this Olympics is how I will remember it. COVID has changed the landscape of the world as we know it. I don’t think any of us will struggle for things to remember Tokyo 202ONE by.

He graduated from Father Lopez Catholic High School where he played football and baseball. He went on to play football at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Between his Olympic duties Gahagan has coached football and baseball in the Daytona Beach area and served a stint as athletic director at Seabreeze High School.

He also is the co-founder and director of player development for sports agency Axios Management.

Burntwood Tavern now open at The Trails Shopping Center ASSOCIATE EDITOR

A new tavern-style restaurant has found a home in The Trails Shopping Center, and its management is hoping it becomes the “go-to” place for all locals.

Once open, Burntwood Tavern will be able to sit around 160 people, including with a 25-seat bar and 18-table patio. Choosing The Trails Shopping Center fit their mold for places the franchise is often built, Kelley said.

With the recent improvements to the shopping center, such as the remodeled Publix, Chef Art Pour Restaurant Group saw a good opportunity to expand its Florida locations.

“We’re super excited,” Kelley said. “The Trails has been great to us, and we’re really excited to be part of it. It’s a nice refurbished center. It’s on the up and up.”

Bryan Kelley, director of operations for Chef Art Pour Restaurant Group, said they’re excited to open their new restaurant at the Trails Shopping Center.

According to a recent press release by the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools, the nonprofit was picked as an opening charity partner by Burntwood Tavern, who will donate 20% of all sales to the foundation throughout the day on Thursday, Aug. 26.

“We are committed to supporting our neighboring schools, youth sports teams and all non-profit organizations such as FUTURES Foundation,” said Jennifer Leonard, director of marketing and events for Chef Art Pour Restaurant Group in the press release.

“FUTURES Foundation’s programs benefit so many students, teachers and staff across the Volusia County School District, it was an ideal fit within our mission.”

on Thursday, Aug. 19, in a 6,000-square-foot building at 250 N. Nova Road. This will be the 15th location opened by the Ohio-based restaurant group, and the fifth in Florida. The restaurant boasts its upscale tavern fare including sandwiches, small plate appetizers and burgers, as well as its specials on beer, wine and liquor. Burntwood Tavern also infuses its own vodkas with ingredients like blueberries, strawberries, jalapeños and bacon.

Bryan Kelley, director of operations for Chef Art Pour Restaurant Group, which owns the Burntwood Tavern franchise, said they prefer to be in small residential communities where they can embed themselves and give back.

“We’re a company that we live and die by the guest experience, and if we don’t know your name when you come in, one of us is going to find out your name by the time you leave,” Kelley said. “That’s our goal.”

All of the Burntwood Tavern locations have a unique appearance. From handblown glass light fixtures to repurposed wood details — often gathered from old Ohio barns — adorning the inside of the restaurants, Kelley said Burntwood Tavern is not a “cookie-cutter” restaurant.

“Everything has a story,” he said.
