Both Starbucks locations in Ormond Beach will be converting to paper straws in November, the city announced via Twitter after its inaugural Mondays with the Mayor event on Monday, Oct. 21.

This move is in support of the city’s effort to reduce single-use plastics. The city recently passed a plastic straw ban ordinance which was spearheaded by Commissioner Susan Persis. .

There’s a new manufacturer in town.

Future Foods Enterprises LLC, a food manufacturer and importer, has selected Ormond Beach to establish a new manufacturing and distribution plant, the city announced Monday.

“Ormond Beach is proud to welcome Future Foods LLC as a new corporate citizen,” said Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington in a press release.

“As a company engaged in

high tech applications in food manufacturing, Future Foods typifies the kind of companies seeking the exceptional business climate for which Ormond Beach is known.”

Future Foods will occupy an existing building at 1899 N. U.S. 1. It produces meat substitutes derived from plant-based proteins like soy, peas and beans, and currently imports both processed and finished product from Europe and sells to restaurants and

insititutional dining facilities.

The company is expecting to create 50 new jobs over a three-year period. Its capital investment is about $5 million.

“This is great news for our company,” CEO Alex Kramarchuk said. “The community has a great deal to offer and the building meets many of our requirements. We look forward to becoming an active corporate citizen in our new home.”

West Nile virus advisory issued The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County issued a health advisory for West Nile Virus on Oct. 17, due to an increase in the number of sentinel chickens testing positive for the disease.

There have been no human cases of infection confirmed in the county, but the risk of transmission to humans has increased.

awa celebrated the grand opening of its Ormond Beach store — along with two others in the state, marking over 200 stores in Florida — with free coffee, $2 gasoline, a dancing goose and hoagies.

The store officially opened its doors on Thursday, Oct. 17, over two years after Granada Pointe’s rezoning and development order was approved. A ceremony was held outside the building and attended by city officials, community leaders, curious onlookers and Wawa staff. Several first responders were also there, as Wawa hosts a Hoagies for Heroes contest at each of its grand openings to recognize everyday heroes in the community and support their organizations.

“We’re grateful to be part of this community,” said Steve Hasher, Wawa’s director of operations in Florida. “When we open this store, our goal and our purpose as well is to build lives every day. We plan to do that.”

Wawa has added 40 jobs to the community, and pay may range from $10 to $28 an hour depending on position, according to the company website. The store also donated $1,000 each to the

Ormond Beach Police Department, the Ormond Beach Firefighters Charities and the Boys and Girls Club.

Hasher said the store’s opening wouldn’t have happened without the support of community leaders, saying they have been a “vital part of our expansion efforts.”

The development of Granada Pointe and the new Wawa was a controversial subject in the community once the land was clearcut, and the topic played a role in various City Commission candidate platforms in the 2018 election. The gas station is the first business to open in the 32-acre multi-parcel development which had to be rezoned to a Planned Business Development to come to fruition.

Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington welcomed Wawa into the community, saying he’s heard many residents say they love the gas station’s drinks, hoagies and gasoline prices.

“We are very excited about having Wawa in Ormond Beach,” Partington said.

Store General Manager Jason Smith, an Ormond Beach resident, said he and his team were proud to work at Wawa.

“Ormond Beach, this is your Wawa as much as it is ours,” Smith said. “We look forward to welcoming you, our new friends and our new neighbors, every day.”

When it comes to growth, can government officials say no?

The consensus of panelists at the League of Women Voters of Volusia County’s “What’s Left in the Growth Management Tool Box?” event was yes, but there are some hoops to jump through, mainly created by Florida Legislature in the last decade or so.

The three-person panel was made up of Volusia County Deputy County Attorney Jamie Seaman, County Director of Growth and Resource Management Clay Ervin and Ormond Beach Planning Director Steven Spraker.

Each detailed a different component of managing growth.

Seaman said that previously, local governments were required to analyze growth, and projects were overseen by the state as well.

There were analyses of financial feasibilities, and a project couldn’t be built unless the developer had the capital improvements to support the ensuing growth. For example, an apartment complex couldn’t be built if there wasn’t enough capacity on the street, and a housing development couldn’t be constructed without water and sewer capacities.

That all changed in 2009 when regulations were loosened by state legislators, and then in 2011 with the Florida Community Planning Act in which the Department of Community Affairs was abolished and the Department of Economic Opportunity was created, Seaman explained.

Developers were then allowed to “pay as you go” regarding capacity, meaning local governments couldn’t say no to a development if the developer paid impact fees and other project costs.

Local government is now starting to feel the impact of the 2019 legislative session, Seaman added. Some of those impacts include vesting all pre-existing development orders in comprehensive plans and putting a 120day development application timeline in place for government.

Impact fees also have to be used to mitigate direct impacts of the development.

“Yes, we feel like our hands are tied, and I know you are frustrated as residents [on] why isn’t the government doing more at the local level,” Seaman said.

Spraker said that in the core of Ormond, the goal is to keep the existing densities. In the western portion of the city, the goal is reduce overall density.

“We’re nearing build-out,” Spraker said. “We don’t have a lot of residential land that’s left to be developed.”

There are two residential projects being built: Pineland, which will comprise 192 lots, and Cypress Trails which will have 48. The 144-lot Marshside Village project was voted down by the city in 2018, and is currently in litigation, Spraker said.

The future growth of the city resides in Ormond Crossings. If he had to guess a total of maximum single-family units that could be added to the city, Spraker said, he’d give a ballpark estimate of 3,500 homes.

It’s been less than a month since the city of Ormond Beach finalized the current budget, appropriating $1.1 million for the design and permitting of the first of 10 phases of a septic-to-sewer conversion in Ormond-by-the-Sea. A lot has happened in a short time: By late August, a citizen group called Ormond by the Sea Association had been organized, residents voiced loud and clear that they didn’t want to be annexed, and the city passed a resolution vowing to amend its existing comprehensive plan to exclude the north peninsula from the city’s annexation agreement requirement for connecting to utilities.

Opposition regarding the use of a 2013 report by the Florida Department of Health has been heard at both County Council and Ormond Beach City Commission meetings, with residents asking that a study be completed to investigate if their septic tanks are really the cause of pollution in the Halifax River.

A petition for a study has been signed online by over 400 residents, and City Commissioner Dwight Selby told the Ormond Beach Observer that he will ask the City Commission to direct staff to explore pursuing a scientific study of the factors impacting water quality in the area.

A town hall with a panel of subject experts will be held before the end of December, the commissioner said.

WHY A STUDY?

The 2013 report was strictly a recommendation by the health department, and was meant to be used for reference only regarding the long-term plans for sewer in the county, said Robert Maglievaz, environmental administrator for FDOH in Volusia County.

While he wasn’t involved with the creation of the report (and those that were have retired or no longer work in the department), Maglievaz said, the report was a way to develop a prioritization index for sewer.

“There’s nothing in this report that should be used to say that a septic system can or can’t go [in an area] if you’re looking at a lotby-lot level,” Maglievaz said.

The issue with the north peninsula’s septic tanks is the area’s high density of homes, he said. Septic tanks were meant for rural areas where infrastructure cannot be provided in an economical way.

recreation — also plays a role in determining whether it’s suitable for septic systems, said Dr. Jennifer Bell, assistant chair of the Daytona State College School of Biological and Physical Sciences.

Those factors mean Ormondby-the-Sea may not be the best area for septic. Bell is no stranger to how the tanks operate — she has one in her home in West DeLand.

“Septic systems are designed to do what they do,” Bell said.

“They’re very good at what they do, so long as they’re maintained.”

The FDOH report doesn’t take into account how well maintained the systems in the north peninsula are. In fact, Maglievaz said, there’s no way for the health department to know this because tanks aren’t inspected beyond repairs and new installations.

Bell said it will be difficult to get homeowners on board with a conversion if their tanks are functioning properly. She believes that new subdivisions in that area should be tied to city sewer, but that existing older homes shouldn’t be forced to convert.

However, residents should understand that at some point, they will eventually need a new septic tank, and that comes at a cost.

TESTING ON THEIR OWN

Jeff Brower, who is running for Volusia County Council Chair in 2020, decided to conduct his own test of a few north peninsula septic tanks. Eight, to be exact. He decided to get involved after seeing the 2013 FDOH report, and said he’s been testing soils since 1979 as part of his job.

obtained a soil column five feet deep using a pipe. He only tested the soil in the bottom of the probe, sending samples to Perry Agricultural Laboratory Inc., of Missouri, to analyze for pounds per acre of nitrogen and phosphorous.

His results showed lower numbers of nitrogen and phosphorous levels than he anticipated.

He believes that’s because septic tanks are doing their job, and bacteria are consuming the nutrients before they reach the groundwater.

Selby said that while he believes the 2013 FDOH study is enough to justify converting to city sewer, the residents do not.

“I’m not an engineer, scientist or attorney,” Selby said. “I’m a policy maker. So I would likely need an expert to explain [Brower’s] work to me.”

Brower said he hopes his study raises questions and triggers more testing to explore the cause of water pollution in the Halifax.

DEP’S ACTION PLANS

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection conducted its own study in 2013 on the total maximum daily load of nutrients on the upper portion of the Halifax River. It estimated that there were 1,030 households on septic along the Halifax River watershed, and, based on a 1999 estimate of 70 gallons of sewage a day per person, it hypothesized that about 19,845 pounds of nitrogen and 8,268 pounds of phosphorous went into the groundwater a year.

The DEP’s estimate of total households is a bit lower than the FDOH’s numbers. According to the FDOH’s 2013 report, Maglievaz said, there are an estimated 5,286 onsite wastewater treatment systems in Ormondby-the-Sea. Only 2,274 of those have a record of a repair, upgrade or new system installation. However, Maglievaz said, the FDOH database only goes back to 1999,

and he believes repair permits have been required since 1991, so the permitted repair numbers could be higher.

Based on the numbers the FDOH has, at least 43% of systems in the north peninsula have been repaired and inspected at least once since initially installed.

Part of the reason the 2013 FDOH report stated that the north peninsula was unsuitable for septic was due to the permeability of the soil, identified as a Palm Beach/Paolacomplex sand.

Florida DEP Deputy Press Secretary Weesam Khoury said in an email that, depending on how quickly water can move through the soil down to the aquifer and how close the aquifer is to the surface, septic systems can collectively “account for significant nutrient pollutant loading to impaired waters, including springs and surface waters.”

the soil and to the aquifer, while phosphorus tends to bind to the soil,” Khoury said. “The more permeable the soil (i.e., the faster the water can move through it), the less time there is for natural processes to reduce the nitrogen and the larger impact on the groundwater resource.”

DEP has put in place water quality restoration plans, known as basin management action plans, across the state. These BMAPs require any new construction in high-density areas to have enhanced nutrientreducing septic systems or connection to sewer in special focus areas, Khoury said. BMAPs have been put in place in the Gemini Springs, DeLeon Spring and Indian River Lagoon areas.

Khoury said Gov. Ron DeSantis recently announced proposed legislation to provide increased requirements in wastewater infrastructure, sanitary sewer overflows, biosolids, septic systems, agriculture and stormwater – “making all BMAPs and permitting programs stronger.”

Maglievaz said that if DEP decided to implement a BMAP in the Halifax River, that would mean residents would face expenses regardless of a sewer conversion.

They would have to put in nitrogen-reducing tanks once their existing ones fail. A 2011 FDOH onsite nitrogen reduction strategies study quoted final construction costs for a Nitrex system at $23,600.

“There’s multiple ways to approach the issue of sewage treatment, sewage collection — septic tanks is one way, sewer is another way,” Maglievaz said. “I think we need to look at all the pros and cons of both ways.”

My view of the state of the city Ormond Beach government is ignoring the will of the people.

The Oct. 8 Ormond Beach “State of the City” celebration — interestingly, held outside the city at the Halifax Plantation clubhouse — touted economic development, quality of life, and a series of public meetings that Mayor Bill Partington said “redefined” how the city communicates with its residents. While there is no doubt this feast of selfcongratulation by our elected officials disseminated some truths and facts, it is important to note facts that were left out: It’s been nearly a year since our five sitting commissioners were challenged in an election where 40% of the voters in Ormond Beach cast votes of “no confidence.” The incumbent officeholders held their 60% base after receiving a total of $250,000 in campaign contributions from the local business-developer power structure. In stark contrast,

or threats of, intense development with the rubber stamp of Planning Board and City Commission, often against city staff recommendations and against the city’s Comprehensive Plan. These incursions, also over the protest of homeowner residents, have or likely will disrupted the quiet enjoyment and quality of life for adjacent property owners at Granada Pointe, Ormond Central, 100 North Halifax, New Britain/ Lincoln, Hernandez and Dix avenues, and Chelsea Place.

This is our city, where massive clear-cuts of forest have been approved in floodplains, in contradiction to recommendations in the city land code that discourages large retention ponds and fill, on Sterthaus, West Granada and Clyde Morris. This flood risk development has already occurred on The Loop in Plantation Oaks, recently annexed by the city, where up to 1,500plus manufactured homes will produce almost zero city property taxes — while requiring Ormond Beach police, fire, water and sewer services.

This is our city, that was able to give back a portion of new assessments in a slightly lower tax rate, but raised water, sewer, solid waste and recycling rates, shifting and putting the largest burden on low-income residents.

This is our city, whose leadership approved mov-

It’s now been a year, and our residents are still waiting for our elected officials to address the issues that divided our community: the repeal of our wetland protection rules and the low impact development zoning that protected West Granada Boulevard.

Our town’s citizens feel disrespected and disenfranchised.

These presentations — at taxpayer expense — were less about citizen input and dialogue and more about incumbent city leadership’s self-promotion of alleged accomplishments, during the run-up to the November 2018 election. The “redefined” communication that Mayor Partington asserts just didn’t happen. Again, I was there; there was no dialogue; city officials were introduced and left the building; session participants at round tables dropped their questions into fishbowls to be answered later.

This is our city, that made a deal for an unneeded traffic light at Granada and Tomoka Ave. while the Hull Road-U.S. 1 entrance to our heavily used recreational fields waits for a traffic light that will ensure the safety of children. And, the “suicide alley” where fatal crashes have occurred on Nova Road between Granada and Wilmette Avenue goes unaddressed.

This is our city, that approves large “planned business developments” that allow commissioners to throw out all applicable development rules and arbitrarily negotiate waivers and exemptions on the fly.

This is our city, that remains tightly gripped by the power of money, with goals, decisions, and expenditures of our taxpayer dollars dedicated to the moneyed interests.

This is our city, a city whose governance has lost its way, with no evidence of the will, or the capacity, to restore democratic, responsive government. Fellow citizens of Ormond Beach, friends and neighbors, this is our city. Let’s take it back.

Back on track How Otis Walker overcame loss to become Seabreeze’s dominant senior running back.

I

t’s a Tuesday afternoon at Seabreeze High School, and the sun is starting to dip below the horizon. There are no lights to illuminate the football field, but the Sandcrabs’ football team, fresh off a dominating performance against Pine Ridge, keeps practicing.

Otis Walker, a senior, is among them.

He’s quiet. He does his job.

You’d think he’d be the kind of guy who doesn’t make much of an impression.

But not with that frame. It’s the first thing that stands out when

the Sandcrabs take the field for a game.

All 6 feet 1 inch, 210 pounds of him.

It’s even more startling once the games commence: the bonecrushing hits, the debilitating stiff arms, the lowered shoulder that can put almost any defender on his butt in the blink of an eye.

The Sandcrabs have won five games this season. That’s more wins than they’ve had in any season since 2013 (a seven-win season). And Walker’s play at both running back and defensive end has been one of the biggest reasons for Seabreeze’s success this season.

And it almost didn’t happen.

After a touchdown pass from T.J. Lockley to Taron Keith, the Buccaneers’ Lemondre Joe tipped a pass to himself for an interception and took it back for a score to give Mainland a 22-6 lead with 2:16 to play in the half.

Ra’Mello Dotson added a 50-yard pick six on the Barracudas’ next drive. Finally, R.J. Turner recorded Mainland’s third pick six of the night to give the Buccaneers a 35-6 lead with 9:04 to go in the third quarter.

The Buccaneers are 3-1 in their last four games and are on a twogame winning streak.

‘I HAD TO GET MY LIFE TOGETHER’

Walker joined the Seabreeze football team in ninth grade. He only played one junior varsity game, however. One of his cousins, who lived in Miami, died midway through the season. Walker and his mother made the nearlyfour-hour drive soon after to be with his family. He stayed for two weeks and missed practice and school.

Things didn’t get better when he got back.

He started skipping class, he fell behind, he grades slipped. He remained academically ineligible to play high school football for two more years.

But in the spring semester of his junior year, he knew that he

“We as a coaching staff know that when we get in the red zone, when our offensive line is doing what they need to do and we have a bigger guy who is going to keep his legs churning, we see that as guaranteed points,” Seabreeze coach Pat Brown said.

He wanted him to play football.

But first, he needed to improve his grades.

“I realized that I had to get back on track,” Walker said. “I had to get my life together.”

A 2.0 GPA is required to be eligible to play high school football in Florida. Walker had a 1.7. He buckled down, finished his online classes early, took more online classes and, before Seabreeze’s Red and White spring scrimmage, surpassed a 2.0.

“He got dialed in,” Brown said.

“He made a commitment to it, and it was a good first accomplishment to actually commit to something and finish it.”

‘I’LL KEEP PUSHING UNTIL I MAKE IT’

Even without playing football for nearly three years, Walker has gotten better each week this season. He’s become more patient, he can read holes and blocks better, he’s improved his pad level on his runs.

And the bonds he’s formed with his teammates have gotten stronger.

“The guys really look up to him, and they see his development,” Brown said. “That’s more encouraging than anything — seeing that he’s becoming more consistent, more reliable.”

The Sandcrabs set a goal of going to the playoffs in 2019, and they’ll need the best out of Walker in order to get there.

Walker doesn’t always have confidence in himself, but he’ll push to the end anyway.

“I’ll keep pushing until I make it,” he said.

“Getting to five games is huge for us, but honestly, it was just another game for us,” Brown said. “We don’t put any game bigger than any other one. Each game for us is program changing. Having one win last year, everybody was counting us out.”

Knowledge is power: Why I joined a DNA study AdventHealth has launched WholeMe, a DNA study in partnership with Helix, that will sequence 10,000 Florida residents’ DNA for genes linked to FH.

DNA is a fascinating subject.

How something so small can hold so much information is mind-blowing, and I know I’m not the only one who is curious about it. DNA testing has spiked in popularity in the last few years or so with the use of at-home testing kits like AncestryDNA and 23andMe. The kits strive to answer one of the questions I’d say most of us are interested: Where did I come from?

One question I hadn’t thought about was, How does my DNA affect my health?

In July, AdventHealth announced the launch of WholeMe, advertised as the “first-of-its-kind” DNA study in the state. The hospital is partnering with Helix, a personal genomics company from California, to sequence 10,000 people’s DNA to screen for genes linked to familial hypercholesterolemia, also known as FH. This is a lifethreatening genetic condition

that causes high cholesterol, and if left untreated, could lead to cardiovascular disease, an AdventHealth release stated.

The study’s participants will also learn about ancestry traits and 22 other genetic traits. Among those, odd ones like whether or not the taste of cilantro offends you, how sweet your sweet tooth really is, and if you have a tendency to tan or get a sunburn caught my attention. I’m also hoping the study tells me I’m a teensypercent Italian so I can justify the four years I’ve studied the language and culture, and the incomplete University of Central Florida minor in the language under my belt. (I needed to graduate!)

So I joined the 10,000 people in the free study. On Monday, Oct. 21, I spit into a little test tube in a room full of people at AdventHealth Daytona. It was just as awkward as you can imagine, even if you were in a little curtained area.

They also had lemons everywhere, because apparently lemons increase your salivation production. Who knew?

But, what happens if you find out you have the genes for FH at the end of the study?

AdventHealth will complete a confirmatory blood test and schedule you for one session with a genetic counselor.

You’ll also be connected with a cardiologist for preventative measures.

For me, that’s a benefit, especially if you believe that knowledge is power. Though appointments at AdventHealth Daytona were only held until Oct. 23, people still wanting to participate in the study can drive to AdventHealth Celebration for studies from Oct. 27 Nov. 1, or to AdventHealth Orlando Nov. 4-21 for a WholeMe appointment. Bullying: How kids can make a difference Bullying among kids continues to be the No. 1 social issue facing this demographic, according to YouthBeat research. This is why Cartoon Network, PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and 826 National are taking action to promote inclusion, acceptance and kindness to unite communities and help keep kids safe.

One in five students report being bullied in a recent survey commissioned by Cartoon Network in consultation with the Making Caring Common project (MCC) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The good news is that the research also suggests that with encouragement and guidance, kids themselves can take action to stop bullying: among its findings — 58% of kids ages 9-11 who have seen someone getting picked on or being left out say that one of the reasons they sometimes don’t help those kids is that they don’t know what to do or say. Moreover, 77% say it would help if there was someone who could give kids ideas about what to do or say in tough situations.

With this in mind, the Cartoon Network’s “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” initiative has joined PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and 826 National in order to inspire kids to make a difference by offering tangible strategies and resources to help everyone feel included. This collaboration has come to life through a joint campaign, called “Include Someone, Make a Difference,” which has a goal of inspiring inclusive acts

among kids in all 50 states.

To help kids get started, the campaign is sharing some ideas for including, valuing and supporting others in classrooms, on the playground and in the cafeteria, just to name a few:  Notice if someone is alone at recess and ask if they want to join you.  Invite someone looking for a place to sit to join your crew.  Start a conversation and learn something new about a peer.  Be patient with those who do things in a different way.  Say “good morning” to some-

one walking to class alone.  Ask someone how they’re day is going and really listen to the answer.  Introduce yourself to someone new.  Give a sincere compliment about something well done.

One of the beliefs of the campaign is that sharing stories and amplifying ideas about the importance of including others will engage, inspire and give kids confidence to do the same.

To that end, they are encouraging kids to visit IncludeSomeone. com and share acts of inclusion and learn how it made others feel

valued and supported. The site, which is tracking and highlighting nationwide participation via an inclusive map, also includes free resources for kids and educators on how to get involved. Teachers can get a free “Include Someone” kit featuring an idea guide, poster, flyers, stickers and cards.

The reasons for bullying are complex. But students have the power to put a stop to bullying before it starts by including someone and making a difference.

Finding mental health by Pieces of Peace October is proclaimed as mental Health Awareness Month PAOLA RODRIGUEZ STAFF WRITER

On Oct. 15, the Palm Coast City Council presented a proclamation to local groups Flagler Cares and Peace by Pieces, designating October as Mental Health Awareness Month.

It calls upon all citizens as well as public and private organizations to recommit to increasing awareness and understanding of mental illness and the need for services to promote recovery.

Peace by Pieces is a nonprofit community wellness center in Flagler County. It is run by Toni Mayes, a yoga instructor, domestic and emotional abuse survivor, and leader who finds purpose and peace in helping people by creating a safe space for the community to gather and find their pieces of healing.

Mayes decided to take action to help improve the mental health of the community due to the high rates of suicides in the county, currently ninth in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health.

According to the 2016-2019 Flagler County Community Health Needs Assessment, 32.71% of the population agreed that mental health/counseling services were difficult to obtain in the community.

‘They’re all like my sons’: $10,000 for safer football helmets “It’s close to me and close to my heart that they’re all safe.”

The Father Lopez football team thought the helmets came from an unknown private donor. They didn’t know she was so close to the team.

If her son was going to play football, Dr. Whitney Shoemaker was adamant about one thing.

He had to be safe.

Her 16-year-old son, Gunnar Shoemaker, had been asking to play the sport since he was little, but Whitney Shoemaker, a local gynecologist, decided to allow him only when he was in high school. She was concerned about his health — especially the possibility of post-concussive syndrome.

After all, Whitney Shoemaker had seen firsthand the effects of head trauma, both as a resident in the hospital and growing up.

Her family had been close with Tommy Durrance, a former Florida Gators football player. Their families used to vacation together every summer in the Abaco islands, and Shoemaker said Durrance had been like a second dad to her.

Durrance died in 2005 due to a cerebellar degenerative disease.

He was 55 years old.

“To see someone like him who was so energetic and loved life to be in that debilitating situation and lose his motor skills, and almost be trapped in that situation and lose his vitality like that — it was heartbreaking,” Whitney Shoemaker said.

So when she heard about Vicis helmets last spring during a football team education meeting at Father Lopez Catholic High school, she knew Gunnar had to have that helmet.

In fact, she decided the entire team needed them.

“They’re all like my sons,” Whitney Shoemaker said. “I don’t want to see any of them end up like Tommy.”

Each Vicis ZERO1 helmet retails for $950. Shoemaker donated about $10,000 to Father Lopez, which the school matched, so that every football player gets one. This year, the team bought about 25. Whitney Shoemaker has pledged to donate money for the helmets to her alma matter indefinitely.

Father Lopez football Coach Chris Stephenson said Shoemaker’s commitment to safety for the students is “mind-blowing.”

“It almost makes you cry,” he said.

The Vicis helmets are some of the best on the market now, and several NFL players wear them, Stephenson said. The helmets are made to fit the football player and designed to absorb the energy of a hit or fall at impact.

Athletes are getting bigger, faster and stronger, he added. As a result, the injuries are more violent.

Shoemaker’s husband. “It’s very hard to see these guys go through what they go through to play a game.”

Gunnar Shoemaker, a 6-foot2, 280-pound right guard for the offensive line, was born premature. Ryan said his wife was doing everything she could to protect him and the other players.

When the team found out about the helmets, all they were told was that a private donor had aided in buying them. Gunnar Shoemaker didn’t think much of it. He told his mom that “some rich guy” probably bought them, Whitney Shoemaker recalled.

Gunnar Shoemaker didn’t find out until he was called out of class for a newspaper interview. He was shocked.

“It just makes me really proud that she supports us that much,” Gunnar Shoemaker said.

He wants his brothers on the field to be safe, too, and finding out that his mother helped with that makes him appreciative. He said he knows his teammates are too.

“It’s close to me and close to my heart that they’re all safe,” Gunnar Shoemaker said. “If they’re good enough for the NFL, then they’re good enough for us.”

Healthier smiles after Halloween National Brush Day is Nov. 1. “It’s an excellent opportunity to clean up from Halloween sweets, learn more about dental health and perfect your brushing technique,” says Dr. Ruchi Sahota, American Dental Association (ADA) spokesperson.

For a healthy mouth and smile, the ADA offers the following tips and recommendations.

One great way to celebrate National Brush Day is with a new toothbrush. It could be time for a new one, anyway. The ADA suggests replacing toothbrushes every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t clean as well. Soft-bristled brushes also protect your teeth and gums.

Talk to your dentist about which types of dental products will be most effective for your family, and also be sure these products carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

The seal lets you know they meet strict ADA criteria for safety and effectiveness.

How to update your home Why every child needs a lighting to be easy on the eyes comprehensive eye exam If you ever experience eyestrain, tired itchy eyes, blurry vision or headaches, it may be time to give your home a lighting makeover.

Problems caused by bad lighting can be intensified by using it for longer, something most households should keep in mind, as 74% of Americans in a recent survey, commissioned by lighting manufacturer, Signify, say they spend eight hours or more a day under artificial light.

The World Health Organization predicts that 50% of people will be short sighted by 2050.

Unfortunately, there’s a disconnect between people’s concerns about eye health and the steps they are taking to support eye comfort at home. While 80% of U.S. consumers in the same Signify survey say they believe good lighting is beneficial for eye health, a 2017 Signify study found only 21% take that into account when purchasing light bulbs, and only 29% consider light quality.

For many consumers, the disconnect may stem from overwhelming choice when it comes to home lighting and from not having enough information to make an informed decision.

Luckily, manufacturers are taking steps to improve lighting quality and help guide consumers in their search for comfortable light that’s easy on the eyes.

TO FURTHER PROTECT YOUR EYES AND AVOID DISCOMFORT, TRY THIS:  If you are in front of screens (computers, smartphones, televisions) for extended periods of time, close your eyes for 20 seconds or more, every 20 minutes, to allow them to relax.  If outdoors, wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection to help protect your eyes from the sun. It’s helpful to keep a pair in your bag or car, so they are always nearby. Also consider spending a bit more time in natural light and less in artificial light.  Exercise and strengthen your eyes by incorporating simple, yet effective eye yoga exercises into your daily routine for a few minutes daily.  Schedule regular check-ups with an eye specialist, who will be able to detect the first signs of any eye condition or disease.

Making the Most of the Medicare Annual Election Period Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are increasingly popular, offering robust benefits including vision, health, dental, drug coverage and more. For the more than 22 million people with an MA plan, the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP), running from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, is the only time each year when they can shop for alternate plans.

“Health care is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make,” says Brian Evanko, who heads Medicare for Cigna, which serves more than 3 million Medicare customers nationwide through its various plans. “For those unsatisfied with their MA plan, the AEP provides a valuable opportunity to shop for a new one that better meets their specific needs.”

4 WAYS MEDICARE PART D IS CHANGING IN 2020 If you have Medicare and are looking for ways to save on the ever-increasing cost of medications next year, consider adding a prescription plan known as “Part D.” By making medications more affordable, Part D plans can help you stay on track to achieve your 2020 health goals.

Choosing the plan that’s best for you can seem daunting at first, so familiarizing yourself with how Part D plans work is essential.

Here is a brief summary of the changes that will affect each stage of coverage next year.

Alzheimer’s and dementia: Here are 10 warning signs

Every day, roughly 10,000 baby boomers nationwide turn 65, according to the Pew Research Center, which means that a growing number of Americans are dealing with the many challenges associated with aging parents or relatives. Among them is determining when parents may need assistance they aren’t currently receiving.

Unfortunately, when seniors struggle with basic tasks such as self-care, transportation or household chores, they don’t always talk about it. They may be embarrassed or afraid of losing their independence or homes.

Still others may not even realize anything is amiss, particularly if they’re in the beginning stages of dementia.

If a parent requires extra care, consider all your options, including in-home assistance, which allows older adults to continue living at home, while getting needed help. Look for care that offers a whole-person approach, looking beyond basic needs to encompass mind, body, spirit and family to develop specific protocols and interactive activities that stimulate the brain, improve

Recognizing and taking steps to address the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias can be extremely challenging — especially in the early stages. It’s easy and common to dismiss cognitive changes in oneself or a family member as “normal aging.”

“Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging,” says Dr. Keith Fargo, director, scientific programs and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association. “With normal aging, you may forget where you parked your car — that happens to all of us. But if you get in your car and get lost coming home — that’s not normal.”

Alzheimer’s is a fatal progressive disease that attacks the brain, killing nerve cells and tissue, affecting an individual’s ability to remember, think, plan and ultimately function. Today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, that number is projected to skyrocket to nearly 14 million.

To help families identify signs early on, the Alzheimer’s Association offers 10 Warning Signs and Symptoms, a list of some common signs that can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

It means empowering the children to help feed their family and to return to school after the weekend at their best. Without worrying about food, Torres said, each student can think about being a kid.

“We want to replace fear with food,” Torres said.

Torres was recognized with Citizens For Ormond Beach’s Citizen of the Year and Unsung Hero award on Wednesday, Oct. 16, due to her role in helping fight child hunger in the community through Provision Packs, a program that provides six to eight meals for children on the weekends and extended school breaks.

With help from volunteers, Provision Packs distributed 245,497 meals since 2015, according to the program’s 2018-2019 impact statement. Seven schools are enrolled in the program: Pathways Elementary, Tomoka Elementary, Ortona Elementary, Pine trail Elementary, Ormond Beach Elementary, Osceola Elementary and Holly Hill School.

For the 2019-2020 school year, Provision Packs estimates it will need 17,480 bags of food for the children they help. One bag of food costs the program $5. Come next year, the program will be expanded.

Torres said Provision Packs aims to create a “giving cycle.”

“What community really is, is part of our mission at Provision Packs — that love, that love for one another that we don’t just put our blinders on, pay our taxes and assume that everyone else is taking care of it, but rather know your neighbor,” Torres said. “Love your neighbor.”

ON CHOOSING TORRES

CFOB has honored a variety of different people in the community, including Gloria Max of the Jewish Federation, Dr. Pamela Carbiener and developer Bill Jones.

“But what we try to do is find that unsung hero — that person who sees a need, steps up, maybe has leadership, gets other people involved and helps to solve a problem,” said Rita Press, past chair and board member of CFOB. The board nominated Torres for the award due to the Ormond Beach Observer, Press said. She had read the story in the paper’s

April 4, 2019 edition. Most people in the community don’t know who Torres is and what Provision Packs is doing. “[Torres] actually is opening our eyes to a problem,” Press said.

When someone like Torres starts an effort like this, it becomes a movement, Press added. Other people get involved, and the community benefits when it is brought together.

“Isn’t that wonderful, to have a community filled with people like that?” Press said. “That’s the tapestry of Ormond Beach.”

Torres learned she was going to be named Citizen of the Year sometime mid-summer. She felt humbled and excited. It was another opportunity to spread Provision Packs’ mission, and to tear down stereotypes regarding childhood hunger.

She never sees the kids she helps, but she hears stories.

Recently, one of her volunteers told her of a first grader who mustered up the strength to ask for more bags of food. The student had siblings back home, and they didn’t have food either.

“My volunteer looked down and said, ‘We’ll get you another bag,’” Torres recalled. “And he said he went home with one in his pack and one in each hand, and he was so proud because he was going to go home and feed his little brother and sister.”

‘SHE’S MY INSPIRATION’

At the CFOB dinner, Torres got to speak in front of her family and community members about why Provision Packs matters. She also got to thank her mom.

After her parents divorced when she was young, she and her sister lived with their mom in a onebedroom apartment in Louisville, Kentucky. Before the divorce, her mom had been a stay-at-home mom. After, she worked three jobs to keep them afloat.

At night her mom would bake desserts to sell to local restaurants for extra cash. She would also sew at the dining room table. One night, the smell of baked goods woke up Torres, and she opened the bedroom door just a sliver to see her mom at the dining room table. She was surrounded by fabric, patterns and bills.

“I could see her with her face in the fabric,” Torres said. “She was sobbing, but she sobbed in the fabric so she wouldn’t wake us. I could just tell how tired and defeated she was.”

Torres wants to help parents not feel that alone. Her mom is her inspiration.

She hopes her children see that too.

“That if you have a mission, if you have a cause, if you have a passion, be the change,” Torres said.

The first corporate check Torres ever received for Provision Packs was from Kim Babcok of Tomoka Construction.

She remembers because the check was yellow.

He continued to support the program through the years.

Babcock died this summer of cancer, and in lieu of flowers, he asked for donations to the American Cancer Society and Provision Packs.

Because of this, and thanks to a donation by Larry and Andea Frank, Provision Packs dedicated its pantry at 289 Walnut St. in Babcock’s honor on what would have been his 63rd birthday: Oct. 13.

Torres wanted something to signify Babcock’s memory would live on. So she and the board decided on a bell.

“Now, what we’ll do is at the end of [packing], we will ring the bell one time to signify that the children have been fed in honor of Kim for believing in us,” Torres said.

Homeless woman killed in DeLand Christine McCaleb grew up in the Ormond Beach area.

You may have seen her walking.

That’s how she spent her days.

Ormond Beach resident Christine McCaleb, 67, died on a DeLand street about 3 a.m. on Oct. 16, the victim of a stabbing, police say. She was a local resident, but for the past eight years, her home was the windswept sidewalks, benches and parks of the city.

Police believe she was killed for the blanket that covered her as she slept on a bench. The suspect, Jared Shaw, 32, also described by police as homeless, has been charged with murder.

“She would have given that guy her blanket,” said her daughter, Michelle Walker-Arel, of Ormond Beach.

All those contacted for this story said that mental illness was the reason she was homeless.

THE DEPUTY

McCaleb was known by many in the area, including Volusia County Deputy Donna Nichols, who had frequent contact with her in Ormond-by-the-Sea. An article in the July 14, 2016, Ormond Beach Observer featured McCaleb and explained how the deputy would bring her food and other necessities. After her death, Nichols contacted the Observer and said she did not want McCaleb to be forgotten.

“I did care for her and helped when I saw her, and many others did, too,” Nichols said recently.

“I took it personally. She was two years’ age difference from my mother.”

At the parks, McCaleb would stand out. She would not hang out with the other homeless people. And everyone who knew her remarked that she always took care to have clean clothes and brushed hair.

Several people in Ormond-bythe-Sea tried to help, Nichols said, but McCaleb would leave after a few days.

“One lady took her in and tried to get her on Social Security, but she took off,” she said.

She would not go to a shelter, but she knew where to get food and clothes.

The deputy said if McCaleb was caught stealing, it would always be food.

“For the most part she was nice and cordial,” Nichols said. “On a good day she was cheery. She would greet you with a smile.”

But she could be angry and very unpleasant when not on her medications, which she could get if she reported to a hospital.

“We can’t force people to get help. And the mentally ill don’t realize they need help,” Nichols said.

Department, got to know McCaleb when she helped her get a Florida ID card after her personal information was stolen.

“She was a wonderful person,” Rebostini said. “She could remember everything. She talked about her first dates, how she met her first husband, how amazing it was when she had her daughter.”

Rebostini said McCaleb had a very good sense of humor and somehow knew all the things that were going on in the world.

She would come in the police station and ask for a bus pass, or

just to talk to Rebostini.

“If someone hurt her feelings, she’d want to talk about it,” she said.

She knows that McCaleb was angry with others when not on medication, but never was that way with her.

Dealing with the bureaucracy was difficult for McCaleb.

“She lived a life of frustration,” Rebostini said.

Rebostini looks forward to the day when a facility becomes available to get homeless back on their feet through case management.

“I did care for her and helped when I saw her, and many others did too.”

McCaleb was born in Ohio and moved as a child with her parents to Holly Hill, later also living in Astor and Ormond Beach, according to her only child, Walker-Arel.

When homeless, she would travel other cities, but always returned to Ormond Beach.

McCaleb was married three times in her life, and for a while worked as a home health aide. She loved the beach, candles, dancing and finding treasures at thrift stores. Her daughter remembers her humor.

“She laughed at everything, including herself,” she said.

Mostly, she loved Jesus. She was very religious.

In 1990, she was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic. Her daughter remembers facilities back then that kept people with mental problems for longer periods to get them stabilized.

Walker-Arel said mental health workers would tell her that her mother was capable of taking care of herself, and they would cite “patient rights.” Also, her mother did not like being confined, and she knew what to say to get released.

“It was the most frustrating thing I ever went through,” Walker-Arel said.

She said the system failed her mother. When the recession hit in 2007, things changed for McCaleb. She lost her case worker, because of cutbacks. There was also a change in the doctor assigned to her case. She stopped taking her medications, which led to her eviction on Sept. 1, 2011.

“I had no idea she was about to be evicted,” her daughter said.

McCaleb has sisters in the area and would stay with them for short periods but would always leave. Walker-Arel was raising two small children and was afraid for her mother to stay with them, because of her paranoia. It was the hardest decision she ever made.

“She had demons. She fought and fought,” Walker-Arel said. “I never blamed her. It was not her fault. I never stopped praying for her and trying to help her. The last thing she said to me is, ‘I love you.

Don’t ever forget that.’”

THE MENTAL ILLNESS PROBLEM

According to the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness

at homelesshub.ca, a web-based research library and information center, people with poor mental health are more susceptible to the three main factors that can lead to homelessness: poverty, disaffiliation, and personal vulnerability.

The website states that, In general, 30-35% of those experiencing homelessness have mental illnesses. For homeless women, the percentage is 75%.

People who have severe mental illnesses are often released from hospitals and jails without proper community supports in place, the website states. Communitybased mental health services and housing play an important role in reducing homelessness for the mentally ill.

Victoria Fahlberg, executive director of the First Step Shelter being constructed in Daytona Beach, said there will be a mental health component at the facility, and she believes it is very important.

“We are contracting with SMA to have a Behavioral Health Care Specialist on-site. They are the largest provider of public Behavioral Health Care Services in the county. This SMA liaison will facilitate direct referrals to SMA community services and help our case managers connect residents to SMA and other needed community-based resources,” she wrote in an email.

WOUNDED PRIDE 1:11 p.m. — 100 block of North Yonge Street Information. An officer advised a man and woman to part ways for the night after the officer was called to investigate a disturbance. The officer spoke with the man involved first, who told him he and the woman got into an argument because she didn’t want to go on a ride with him in a bike trailer he built.

The man told the officer he got upset and threw his cell phone on the ground, breaking it. He also threw a cup of juice at the front door, and then promptly tripped over his bike trailer. He got a scratch on his hand and one on his back.

The woman corroborated the man’s story. He gathered his things and left.

GOING BANANAS 4:32 p.m. — 100 block of South Nova Road Driving without a license. A 42-year-old man was arrested after he stole bananas from a local grocery store and attempted to flee the scene in a sedan despite having a revoked license since 2016.

Police report they were able to catch up to the man and that he immediately admitted to stealing the bananas. The grocer declined to press charges but wanted police to issue the man a trespass warning. The man told police he drove to the grocery store from his home and stole some

bananas because he couldn’t pay for all of them.

The bananas were returned to the store, and the man’s vehicle was picked up by his father. Police took the man to jail.

WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER 7:26 a.m. — First block of Pebble Beach Drive Vandalism. An Ormond Beach man woke up to see his car had been decorated with broken eggs, Italian dressing and a whole rotisserie chicken, the latter of which was placed on the driver’s side front wheel.

He told police he suspected his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend committed the offense after she broke up with him to be with the Ormond Beach man.

Police asked the girlfriend to call her ex, who denied any involvement. He just talked about how she cheated on him while they were together, police report.

Police later called the ex, who again said he didn’t plant the chicken. Surveillance footage obtained later didn’t show the ex’s car in the area either, so police determined all investigative leads have been exhausted at this point.

A surf boutique called Neighborhood Shop has opened at 128 W. Granada Blvd. offering surf apparel, accessories, sunglasses, jewelry and miscellaneous items such as back packs and bags.

It’s the first shop for owners Amanda and Craig Frick, of Ormond Beach, but they are not new to the merchandise. They are representatives for 12 manufacturers in the surf shop industry.

They have visited shops all over the world, and the décor of the new shop was inspired by surf boutiques on the Gold Coast of Australia, famed for its beach life.

Shelves with unpainted wood, jute rugs and tropical plants give it an atmosphere where you would walk barefoot, fresh from the beach.

“We wanted to bring a fun, quaint, surf boutique to Ormond Beach,” Amanda Frick said.

They also have jewelry from third world organizations such as Fair Trade, which makes sure the artisans are paid a fair wage and child labor is not used. Next spring, they plan to introduce swimsuits to the merchandise, and surf boards will come in the future. Frick would also like to have a braid bar.

She said they have been very welcomed by the business community, and will take part in the Nov. 2 Art Walk, with five artists in the parking lot. A free shuttle bus 5-8 p.m. takes visitors to six different galleries in the Art Walk.

“We’re excited and thrilled about being in the arts district,” Frick said. “There’s a lot of energy. Everyone has been so welcoming.”

The couple will continue to work as product representatives for the surf shop industry, with an office in the shop. She said previously they worked out of their home, which presented difficulties.

“You need to separate home life and work life,” she said.

SURF BOARD RESIN USED IN OCEAN ART

The Neighborhood Shop also sells the art of a local artist who uses surf board resin to create aerial beach scenes. Hailey Nolin, 22, a 2016 graduate of Seabreeze High School, creates wave action in her art by using a source of heat, such as a hair dryer or blow torch.

“I have to work quickly because it cures fast,” she said.

Her art is also on display at Arts on Granada and 63 Sovereign.

She loves the medium because she never knows exactly how the piece will look until it’s done, though she has an idea for the color and shape. Also, she has always lived near the beach.

Originally, she used resin to stabilize art, then realized she actually liked the way the resin looked. After doing some research on social media, she found that other artists use resin and color can be added. After experimenting, she developed her technique.

GALLERY TO FEATURE ORMONDBY-THE-SEA ARTIST

Ormond-by-the-Sea resident Renata Holder has been chosen as the featured artist at Ocean Art Gallery with a show entitled “Outside The Proverbial Box,” opening Saturday, Nov. 2 and running through Nov. 30.

Holder’s work will be shown on a large wall just inside the

front doors where guests will have an opportunity to chat with the artist. Her style of painting primarily modern abstract and consists of acrylic paints applied on a canvas or combined with mediums of various types, according to a press release. Holder often works with epoxy resin finishes to add vibrancy and depth.

Holder said there is nothing in life more stimulating yet calming than creating art. Her art is not premeditated but a visual process in which the end result presents itself as a subjective image, the press release states.

“I’m creative when I title each piece, but rather than my inventing a story for them, I leave it up to the viewer to interpret in their own way,” Holder said. “I get fulfillment hearing what my works say to them.”
