Marshside Village takes city to court

The Ormond Beach Historical Society has requested that the city grant permission to allow the MacDonald House to appear on the National Register of Historic Places; this was approved by the City Commission.

It was recommended that the house be added to list in 2017.

The commission also authorized a grant application submittal to the county ECHO program for funding to help with the first phase of the house’s restoration.

In Oct. 16, 2018, the Ormond Beach City Commission unanimously denied a development order for Marshside Village, a 144-lot subdivision on the corner of Airport Road and Tymber Creek Road. Now, the decision is in the Circuit Court’s hands.

The developer, Edward Speno, filed a request for the court to repeal the commission’s vote on Nov. 15, 2018, based on the fact city staff supported the application in a report dated Sept. 6, 2018; traffic studies

done by the city and county showed no negative impact on either Airport Road or Tymber Creek; the development would have increased wetland preservation areas and reduced density; and that denying the development due to a “well-intentioned” agreement with CANDO 2 was “purely political,” according to court documents.

Marshside Village was previously denied by the commission in 2016 due to oversized lots.

In response, the city argues

that the commission had substantial evidence to deny the development, based on residents’ traffic concerns; existing flooding issues; failure to meet minimum lot size and boundary perimiter setbacks; and the incorporation of the CANDO 2 agreement.

The city’s planning board also recommended denial of the development.

Attorneys for both parties in the case declined to comment due to upcoming hearing at City Island Courthouse on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Improvements to The Casements The Historic Landmark Preservation Board will meet at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, to discuss an addition to the existing carriage house at The Casements.

The project seeks to extend the existing room by 400 squarre feet for more storage.

The Board will meet at the City Hall training room. The Casements is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Don’t flush wipes down drains City staff is working on a public campaign to inform residents on sewer of problems caused by wipes in the system, according to a city staff report. The wipes labeled as “flushable” cause pumps in the system to bind and fail.

The campaign will state what can and can’t be flushed.

For the month of November, the Granada Bridge will be the home of the brave.

The faces of 96 veterans line the bridge on commemorative banners as part of Ormond Beach’s inaugural Hometown Heroes program. The military appreciation banner program is meant to honor residents, or their immediate family members, who are actively serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, are veterans, or were killed in the line of duty.

City Leisure Services Director Robert Carolin said it’s been a priority in Ormond Beach to recognize veterans as much as possible, and the banner program further establishes that.

“I hope that [people] remember the dedication and the sacrifice that these veterans have made to make this country what it is today,” Carolin said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for all of us to just stop and become grateful for what these wonderful individuals have done.”

The City Commission approved initiating the program at its Aug, 21, 2018 meeting. Hometown Heroes was modeled after a similar DeLand program, Carolin said.

Halifax Health will be sponsoring Hometown Heroes for the next three years, including paying for the creation of the banners. Aside from the 96, two other applications were submitted to the city, which have been placed on a waiting list for next year.

CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH

The city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony just after dawn on Friday, Nov. 1, the day after city crews installed the banners. Following the ceremony, city representatives walked the bridge with members of Ormond Strong, a military support nonprofit.

Mayor Bill Partington said at the ceremony that they were there to honor, remember and celebrate “hometown heroes.”

“Each one of these hometown heroes has an amazing story behind them,” Partington said. “A story of dedication, a story of love of country, a story of family — stories that will make you laugh, stories that will fill you with pride and then some stories that would break your heart if you knew the backstory behind each of these.”

BEHIND THE BANNER

Army veteran Staff Sgt. Daniel Cooper had three things to worry about while serving in Baghdad: what was he going to eat next; when did he have to show up to an assignment; and was he going to get killed by something unseen.

His truck was blown up by explosives three times in Iraq. His unit was fired at by mortars almost daily, he recalled. One time, the interpreter he was speaking with was shot by a sniper.

To get a clear head while serving, Cooper said he had to let go of the fear of being killed.

“I did my due diligence and if I died, I died,” Cooper recalled in a phone interview Nov. 2. “That was something that I adopted.”

His family moved to Ormond in 1994, and while he currently lives in St. Petersburg, his mother still resides in the city. She submitted

both Cooper and her late husband, U.S. Marine Sgt. Robert Cooper, who served in Vietnam from 1969-1971, to be featured in the Hometown Heroes program.

Cooper’s military experience helped shaped his life. He entered basic training on Memorial Day 2000 and his first assignment afterward was to the Old Guard in Washington, D.C. He was there during 9/11. Cooper remembers hearing the plane hit the Pentagon from Fort Myer; he described it as a “deep thud.”

After the attack, he was among those sifting through the rubble for bodies in the Pentagon.

“It was a pretty sobering experience for a bunch of kids,” Cooper said.

Veterans have a special connection, Cooper added. There’s always a bond between people who understand what you’ve gone through. Sometimes, experiences can be hard to explain to friends back home, he said.

With Memorial Day around the corner, Cooper said the holiday is a time to reflect on the people who are willing to sacrifice for strangers.

“I think that’s something to be revered, if not honored,” Cooper said. “So that’s what I would hope people would see when they see the faces on the bridge — remembering that it’s people doing difficult things for them without being asked.”

Ormond-by-the-Sea could get a study on septic tanks after all.

The Ormond Beach City Commission unanimously passed a motion directing city staff to bring back options to address the science behind the septicto-sewer conversion in the north peninsula. The motion also halts the current design process of the first phase (consisting of 700 homes from Plaza Drive to Longwood Drive) and asks that alternative environmental projects be identified for completion.

“Our commitment to helping address environmental issues remains firm, but Ormond Beach can make strides in other ways to achieve this in the immediate future while gathering the additional information on septicto-sewer and deciding where to go when we have that scientific data,” Mayor Bill Partington said.

Five people spoke regarding a study at the commission meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 5, four of whom were in favor. Several of the residents had already spoken at the County Council meeting earlier in the day, and they presented a petition for a study to both government entities with 1,035 signatures.

Ormond-by-the-Sea resident Rashida Hakeem said she was pleased Commissioner Dwight Selby announced he would be recommending the city do a study on the north peninsula’s septic tanks during a recent coffee event hosted by the Daytona Beach News-Journal at Alfie’s Restaurant. While detecting levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in water is relatively easy, she said, determining their source is not.

“Clearly we need soil testing of the septic systems of Ormondby-the-Sea to determine to what degree, if any, they are contributing to nutrient pollution of the Halifax and Tomoka Basin,” Hakeem said.

Ormond Beach police looking for Trustco Bank robber Ormond Beach police are searching for a man who robbed the Trustco Bank at 115 Nova Road Monday morning, Nov. 3.

The robber presented the teller with a note at around 11:17 a.m. and implied that he had a firearm, according to the OBPD. After the teller handed him an undisclosed amount of money, the robber exited the bank.

He was last seen walking south from Trustco.

The robber is described as a white unshaven man between 30 and 35 years old.

He was wearing a black baseball cap, blue long-sleeve shirt, jeans and sunglasses during the crime.

He is between 5-feet-10-inches tall and 6-feet tall and weighs 150-160 pounds. He was carrying a black bag.

he Volusia County Council on Nov. 5 voted 6-1 against a proposed code amendment that would have required rural event centers to notify county staff about events in advance.

They cited a lack of code enforcement officers and concerns that the condition would be too “heavy-handed” for businesses.

Only Councilman Ben Johnson voted in favor of the amendment.

would have required rural event centers to provide the county zoning enforcement official with written notices of scheduled events and to specify what activities were planned.

That would have enabled one of the county’s five code enforcement employees to be assigned to verify that the event complied with noise and time restrictions outlined in the existing special exception, in response to noise complaints.

“I think this is overkill for our businesses,” County Councilwoman Billie Wheeler said.

With only five code enforcement officers in the county, all of whom are not ordinarily scheduled to work in the evenings or weekends when events would typically take place, Wheeler disagreed that the county should move in that direction.

County staff had been tasked with looking into a notification requirement by the council at the Oct. 15 meeting, according to the meeting backup documents.

But what staff came back with was a “vice grip,” County Councilwoman Deb Denys said.

There was also the issue of law enforcement being called about noise complaints. Citizens don’t usually call the county to handle noise issues, Councilwoman Heather Post pointed out during the discussion.

Johnson said the requirement was proposed to correct for the fact the county’s code enforcement is short staffed. If staff knows an event is coming up, they can schedule someone to check in on it should there be issues at that particular center. If the business refused to comply, the county could repeal its special exception, which already has 11 existing conditions, including a 10-acre minimum lot size, 20-foot-wide landscape buffers and restrictions on operating hours.

There are seven rural event centers currently in various stages of the county’s approval process. In this same meeting, the council approved one to be located in New Smyrna Beach.

Denys questioned whether the county’s current ordinance on rural event centers was enforceable as it stood. When she was told that it was, she asked why the county needed the additional condition. County Manager George Recktenwald said it would make it easier for code enforcement to know what is happening in a specific area.

“We’re shooting at a target that doesn’t exist right now,” Denys said.

conversion. When something is “old and substandard,” it’s a problem, she said.

Septic impacts have been documented throughout the state of Florida, and she said Ormond-by-the-Sea is no different. If the city offered 100 free sewer connections at the meeting, she suspected there would be some takers in the audience since the biggest objection by the north peninsula is the cost.

“There is no scenario in which thousands of old septic tanks on small lots are suitable for a barrier island,” Connors said.

Partington said over the last several weeks, he’s heard from many Ormond-by-the-Sea residents. This commission has made the local environment a priority, Partington said, and they believe it’s their role to assist in addressing issues causing nitrogen and phosphorous in the water, which can lead to algae blooms.

Kelley also explained that Ormond-by-the-Sea’s utility provider is Ormond Beach, and that’s why Volusia County

doesn’t have control of the septic-to-sewer conversion.

The only time the county would get involved is if Ormond Beach wanted to enter into a taxing agreement for residents to pay for the conversion, which is “so far off consideration,” Kelley said.

Kelley also made a general observation about public comments made at meetings.

He said there’s not much the council can do if an allegation is made. Council members can’t respond to them during public comment.

“We allow people to say whatever they want,” Kelley said. “It doesn’t have to be true. That’s the sad part about it.”

Selby, who has been at the forefront of the septic-to-sewer conversion in the north peninsula since the beginning, supported pursuing a study. While the vast majority of the most vocal are against the conversion, Selby said there are many in the north peninsula that support the project in silence.

He said the “opposition” has created fear in the community and passed along a “tremendous amount of misinformation” when they list costs between $10,000-$30,000 to hook up.

Selby wouldn’t support it if the cost were that high.

Selby also addressed two points regarding the city’s wastewater treatment plant: No effluent is discharged into the Tomoka River, and the city has never discharged raw sewer into the Halifax River.

He proposed the city enact a moratorium on all septic tanks in new construction within city limits (The Toscana neighborhood off Old Dixie Highway is under county jurisdiction). In addition to that, Selby said he wanted to reduce the amount of treated effluent that currently goes into the Halifax River, perhaps with increased storage at the wastewater treatment plant.

“It’s all our water, and together, we can help solve this problem,” Selby said. “We can move in the direction we want to move.”

Could they have done this differently? Yes, Selby agreed.

But this is where the city is at now.

peninsula is that the conversion of 65 homes on septic in Oak Avenue, Magnolia Avenue and Bonita Place in Ormond Beach has also come to a full-stop.

At least one commissioner will vote no on the study: City Commissioner Troy Kent.

Over the last few weeks, he’s been wondering why the city ever took on this project when the residents of the north peninsula don’t want it. He said he supported the motion because “it stops intruding into [Ormond-by-the-Sea residents’] privacy.”

“We need to get our own house in order first,” Kent said. “We need to get our own residents — all of them — off septic before we introduce this into other jurisdictions.”

“It’s all our water, and together, we can help solve this problem.

Add sewer capacity on the beachside

Dear Editor: Plantation Oaks has just been annexed with a potential of 1,577 manufactured houses.

Pineland Subdivision will be selling soon with 192 homes and the remaining Ormond Crossings Area the city says will be developed.

And recently in 990 acres located south of West Granada Boulevard across from the Hunter’s Ridge development, an amendment seeks to increase residential units from 2,539 to 7,500 or an increase of 4,961 units.

Other future need will obviously be to the west, so why not build a plant on North Peninsula to handle the North Peninsula? There are several suitable sites for a plant seaside.

The residents of Ormond Beach were never consulted or given any input on this waste of our money. The whole fiasco rests on Mayor Bill Partington’s “change of heart” at a workshop June 4, 2019. The City Commission can at any time reverse or change the Comprehensive Plan if they change their mind on annexation or anything else.

Spend money on testing and determining facts.

Editor’s note: City spokesperson Jenn Elston said the residents of Ormond Beach were consulted and have continued to advocate for the conversion of septic to sewer.

At the OB Life meeting held on Aug. 30, 2018, on the topic of environmental issues, accelerating septic-to-sewer conversions was deemed the highest priority by 48.5% of attendees, 3.4% of which lived in the north peninsula. The polling question didn’t specify whether the conversions sought were within the city, or in Ormondby-the-Sea, though speakers pointed out during the meeting the highest impact of septic tanks came from the estimated 5,000 residences in the north peninsula.

SEASIDE MANOR 105-YEAR-OLD RECOGNIZED BY CITY For her 105th birthday on Oct. 30, Erma Mohl received a key to the city.

The Seaside Manor resident is the oldest at the facility. She first fell in love with Florida eight years ago while on vacation, and she loved it so much she never returned home to Pennsylvania, a city proclamation states. Mohl was born in Pennsylvania in 1914. She grew up on a farm with her four siblings, milking cows before school each day.

She had no electricity, no running water and had to walk 2.5 miles to school every day, the proclamation reads.

Mohl has seven children, nine grandchildren, 20 greatgrandchildren and four greatgreat-grandchildren.

Former Ormond electric company worker arrested in Ormond-bythe-Sea burglary case Sean Monti, 45, is suspected to have stolen over 70 items.

A 45-year-old former employee of an Ormond Beach electric company was arrested Oct. 30, along with two other suspects, for an Ormond-by-the-Sea burglary in which homeowners initially reported almost a half million dollars’ worth of missing jewelry.

Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies reported that Sean Monti, of Daytona Beach, pawned at local shops several items of jewelry belonging to the homeowners.

Monti, who deputies stated is a documented gang member, was previously employed by the Cain’s Electric Inc. Co. — the same company which performed electrical work on the burglarized residence a few weeks before. One of the homeowners told deputies that the electrician utilized the bedroom where the jewelry was stored to gain access to the attic for wiring.

The burglary was reported to deputies on Oct. 22, after the homeowners returned from vacation. The home’s rear sliding glass door had been pried open and the couple’s bedroom had been ran-

sacked, an arrest report details.

Among the missing items was an Alexandrite gem valued by the homeowners at $200,000; it was later found inside the residence.

Detectives contacted Michael Cain of Cain’s Electric Inc., who listed Monti as one of two people who worked on the house.

After discovering that Monti pawned the homeowner’s jewelry, deputies went to his Daytona Beach home to arrest him.

Monti ran from the deputies but was eventually apprehended.

Monti admitted to conducting the pawn transactions but refused to admit he burglarized the home, his arrest report states.

He could not provide an explanation for how he came to be in possession of the stolen property.

Monti faces felony charges for burglary, dealing in stolen property, giving false information to a pawn broker, and escape, as well as a misdemeanor charge for resisting an officer without violence.

IDENTITY CRISIS 8:23 p.m. — 100 block of Cumberland Avenue Suspicious incident.

A 32-year-old Daytona Beach man called police to claim that someone had stolen his identity and used it to make car insurance payments. However, when showing an officer the list of charges on his insurance billing history form, the man could not determine which charges were his and which were fraudulent.

He kept telling the officer he gave his driver’s license and debit card to his ex-girlfriend before he went to jail in January, and that he suspected she gave his debit card to another man while he was behind bars.

The man accused his ex’s lover of framing him for a July traffic crash, though the officer couldn’t find any information the crash happened. Due to a lack of information, the officer wasn’t able to determine if a crime was actually committed. The man told the officer he would contact him again at a later date.

OCT. 23

FOUL LANGUAGE 7:40 p.m. — first block of Lakewood Park Information. A verbal altercation occurred between two neighbors after one exited her home and demanded that her neighbor — who’d been speaking on the phone outside — go inside his house because she was not a fan of his “potty mouth.” The woman’s neighbor then swore at her and told her, using vulgar language, to perform oral sex on him.

The neighbor told police this wasn’t the first argument between them.

Police spoke to the woman, who addressed them in an aggressive manner, according to a police report. She demanded that a report be made on her neighbor for disturbing the peace. Officers told her this would not be done since there was no evidence to support her claim. She then became more argumentative and spoke over the officers present.

Eventually, the woman “reluctantly” gave police her identification, telling them her neighbor made her and her cat scared to step out of the house. Both individuals were provided with case numbers.

fter six weeks of lessons, the third veterans’ guitar class graduated from the Elite Academy of Music and Motion in Ormond Beach on Saturday, Nov. 2.

This year’s class was made up of six students. They met every Saturday with Elite Academy Director Damian Bonazzoli to learn how to play music in efforts to promote healing. At the final class, Bonazzoli held a graduation ceremony with several of the students’ friends and family members. Each student was presented with a special medal and the occasion was celebrated with cake.

Father Lopez’s boys and girls cross country teams each qualified for the FHSAA Cross Country State Championship, held on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

The girls team placed third at the regional meet, and the boys team placed seventh.

Samantha Gayton led the girls with a seventh-place finish with a time of 20:03.26.

It’s the seventh-straight year that both of the Green Waves’ teams have qualified for the state meet.

ith less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, the Buccaneers’ offense mounted one final charge against the Bulldogs. Down by down, the Buccaneers advanced the ball until they got all the way inside Bolles’ 5-yard line.

However, a personal foul backed the Buccaneers up 15 yards. Their last-ditch attempt at a touchdown was a lofted pass into the left corner of the end zone. It was broken up by a Bulldogs’ defensive back.

Mainland (6-4) lost to Bolles 21-10 on the Buccaneers’ senior night on Friday, Nov. 1, at Daytona Stadium.

“They’re were the better program tonight,” Mainland coach Scott Wilson said of the Bulldogs.

“The defense stepped up. But we didn’t finish offensively, and we’ve got to be able to do that.”

The Buccaneers drove into the red zone on their first possession of the game but missed a field goal — the first of three missed field goal attempts on the night.

Bolles scored the first touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal with 4:31 to play in the first quarter. The Bulldogs blocked a Mainland punt and recovered it in the end zone to go up 14-0 with 5:08 to play in the first half.

The Bulldogs scored their final touchdown after their running back slipped a tackle in the backfield and ran 30 yards to the end zone with 10:46 left in regulation.

Mainland responded with its first touchdown of the night on a touchdown grab from receiver T.J. Lockley to make the score 21-10.

What does Wilson want to see his team cleanup going forward?

Penalties and red zone offense — both of which were major problems against Bolles.

“We’re making a lot of mistakes right now,” Buccaneers quarterback Taron Keith added. “We have to fix them.”

Despite the loss, the Buccaneers, who defeated rival Seabreeze 44-0 on Oct. 25, are champions of their district, which guarantees them a spot in the 2019 FHSAA State Playoffs.

The Buccaneers won’t change how they prepare, Wilson said.

And if anything, the loss has made them more ready to take on what’s to come in the postseason.

Mainland faces Booker T. Washington at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Daytona Stadium in Round 1 of the playoffs.

“In the playoffs, anything can happen,” Wilson said. “I think it’s going to make us a little hungrier and more humble. We know that we have things to work on.”

Seabreeze’s 2019 football season officially came to a close after the Sandcrabs were defeated by DeLand 38-3 the night of Friday, Nov. 1, at Spec Martin Municipal Stadium.

The Sandcrabs faced arguably the best team in the area Friday night, but Seabreeze never gave up, according to Sandcrabs head coach Pat Brown.

“We knew this was going to be a tough game,” Brown said. “We k n o w DeLand’s defense has some

grown men on it, so we had our work cut out for us.”

The Sandcrabs fell behind 17-0 after the first half but managed to come away with some stops on defense and scraped together a few first downs on offense, including two trips to the red zone.

“I feel like the guys came out fighting from the beginning and continued to fight throughout the game,” Brown said. “They didn’t lay down.”

The Sandcrabs finished with a 5-5 record in the first season under Brown. The Sandcrabs, coming off a 1-9 record a year ago, hadn’t won more than four games in a season since 2013 (a sevenwin season).

“It’s great for the program and it’s great for the seniors to be able to go out as winners,” Brown said.

“They were a part of this turnaround. I love them and appreciate them for trusting me with their last year in this program.”

He added: “When we do complete the turnaround, they’re going to be a part of the legacy that started this thing.”

Two parents, two daughters, a boyfriend and a grandmother with dementia. The three generations of Blakes laugh together, and they cry together.

This fictional family make up the characters at the heart of “The Humans,” a 2016 Tony Awardwinning play written by Stephen Karam. “The Humans” tells the story of the Blakes’ Thanksgiving at the New York apartment belonging to their youngest daughters, but the play departs from the typical narrative of families unraveling over dinner.

In contrast, the Blakes pull tighter together.

“These are people who have worked to build something that they see as very worthwhile and they would defend that with their lives,” said Bethany Stillion, of Ormond Beach, who plays mom Deirdre Blake in the show.

The family is about love, devotion, commitment and “bouncing back,” she said. It’s a premise she believes many in the audience will be able to relate to.

“It’s interesting that it’s called ‘The Humans,’ and I think it’s really a show that any human being is going to find themselves reflected in,” Stillion said.

“It is truly an exploration of the human.”

The show is directed by Beau Wade of Flagler Beach, and is pro-

duced by Positively Florida Theater Co., a local live theater group.

With Positively Florida doing all pop-up theater, the set needed for “The Humans” has posed a challenge. The show needs a two-story set; Positively Florida will be building it just a few days before opening at the Ormond Beach performing Arts Center.

“It’s been really exhilarating to take this story and bring it to life, especially because we’re working with a two-story set, which you don’t often get to do,” Wade said.

This will be his second fulllength show acting as director.

The first, “Hand of God” at the City Repertory Theatre in Palm Coast, aided in him landing the directing role in “The Humans.”

CRT is a much smaller theater compared to the Performing Arts Center, Wade said, “but it’s been a fun challenge.”

Stillion said she and the whole cast have been impressed with Wade’s vision and clarity for the show.

“I knew I wanted to do the play the minute I read it,” Van Auken said.

The cast has been rehearsing for about five weeks but won’t

get to actually run through the show on the actual set until it’s built. That’s a little daunting, Van Auken said.

The cast is up to the challenge, however, and Wade has high hopes for the audience.

“I think that everyone that gets a chance to come see the show will leave the theater with a newfound appreciation for their own family and for life in general,” he said.

A new restaurant is set to open at One Daytona in 2020.

The arrival of Burntwood Tavern, an Ohio-based restaurant group with 13 location including three in Florida, was announced on Oct. 29. The restaurant will be located beneath The DAYTONA hotel and will span approximately 5,200 square feet.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing Burntwood Tavern to ONE DAYTONA and guests in the Daytona Beach area,” said Bret Adams, founder of Chef Art Pour Restaurant Group in a press release. “The community has a terrific synergy, and we feel Burntwood Tavern will be a nice complement adding balance to a dynamic collection of restaurants, shops and entertainment.”

Other Burntwood Tavern locations include Naples, Orlando and Fort Myers. The restaurant will offer both indoor seating and outdoor patio seating with rustic fixtures.

The menu will feature a mix of classic tavern and modern-American cuisine, including a full bar with craft beers, cocktails and its own house-infused vodkas, the press release states.

The recipients were Deltona residents Holly-Noel Monroe and Hilton Smith. Monroe is the scholarship winner for DSC college-credit students and Smith is the winner for DSC adult educa-

Technology class tours manufacturing plants WAYNE GRANT REAL ESTATE EDITOR

A group of students interested in technology got a chance to see what goes on at three Ormond Beach manufacturing plants on Oct. 31. The tour for students in the Academy of Information Technology and Robotics at Spruce Creek High School was organized by Norman Lane, owner of Rotomation Inc., 11 Sunshine Blvd.

“So many kids never see the inside of a manufacturing plant, and have no idea of what we make here,” Lane said before the tour.

He has volunteered as a mentor in the AITR program at the school for eight years.

The other companies on the

tour were Teledyne Oil and Gas, 1026 N. Williamson Blvd.; and Hudson Technology, 1327 N. U.S. 1, all members of Volusia Manufacturing Association.

Teledyne makes marine products for energy exploration and Hudson makes a variety of metal parts that are used by other manufacturers to build an end product. Rotomation makes rotary actuators, used by manufacturers around the world in their assembly processes.

Lane said people are surprised how much manufacturing there is in Ormond Beach.

“They see the road going into the business park but don’t realize there are hundreds of people in here making things that go all over the world,” he said.

require problem solving, Lane said.

Some of the students on tour expressed the opinion that they want jobs that require working with their hands.

“I do not want a job where you just sit all day,” said Tyler Maxell, of Ormond Beach.

Brendan Willett, of South Daytona, agreed, saying he’d rather be a mechanic than an engineer.

On the tours, the students

learned the variety of jobs in manufacturing, including engineering, machinist, tool and die, etc.

Kimberly Stears, teacher in the AITR academy, said they want students to realize there are many jobs where a college degree is not necessary. Good jobs can be obtained with a certificate from Advanced Technology College in Daytona Beach, for example.

Christina Chandradat, of Hudson Technology, said the students learn about the companies on the tour, but the companies also learn about future workers.

“These are the people we could be hiring,” she said.

She said the students were interested to find that many of the things they make turn up in products they use every day, such as automobiles.

In January, robot season starts.

Lane will help the Spruce Creek students to build a robot. For the past three years, the class has gone to the national championship in Houston, after winning regional competitions.

“Next year we’re going to win the national,” Spears said.

Lane said they have been having the tours since 2014 to show students how and why the products are made.

“Maybe they will choose manufacture as a career,” he said. “We want to expose them to the trades and engineering. One of the missions of VMA is to develop a workforce locally.”

Home sales up slightly over last year Condo sales continue decline in Daytona Beach area.

For September, the Daytona Beach Multiple Listing Service reported that 418 existing single-family homes were sold in the greater Daytona Beach area with a median home sales price of $249,900.

That’s 4.5% higher than sales were in September 2018. Year to date, home sales are slightly higher than they were around this time last year, according to an analysis of MLS data by Realtor Ron Wysocarski, broker and CEO of Wyse Home Team Realty in Port Orange.

The median sales price in September also was up, in both monthly and annual comparisons. In fact, MLS reports show the median sales price rose by nearly 8% over September 2018.

Year to date, the median sales price remains 5.5% higher than it was during the first nine months of last year. And sales volume is up 8.6% compared to the first 9 months of 2018, according to

September sales dropped from August, but that’s normal, according to Wysocarski, as families settle into a new school year.

Inventory levels dropped again slightly in September. The total number of homes that were active on the MLS at some point during September, 2,228, was down from September of last year 2,300.

Median sales prices were particularly strong in Ormond Beach and on the beachside.  Ormond Beach: $299,000 median sales price.  Mainland Daytona: $166,000 median sales price.  Beachside (Ormond-by-theSea to Ponce Inlet): $285,000 median sales price.  Port Orange: $237,000 median sales price.  New Smyrna Beach: $382,794 median sales price.

For the fourth consecutive month, condo sales around the greater Daytona Beach area were down in year-over-year comparisons, according to the Wyse Team analysis.

The price of one-bedroom units grew 4.8% to $1,100, while twobedroom units fell 4.7% to $1,620, according to an analysis by www. zumper.com.

The Florida one-bedroom median rent was $1,212 last month.

New Smyrna Beach remained the most expensive city with one-bedrooms priced at $1,350.

Palm Coast was second with rent at $850 and Daytona Beach was third with rent up 1.2% to $860.

Year over year, Port Orange had the fastest growing rent, up 14.7% since this time last year. Ormond Beach saw rent climb 12.2%, making it the second fastest growing.
