After 20 years serving in local government, Volusia County Council Ed Kelley has struck the gavel for the final time.

The council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 15, marked the last for Kelley and fellow County Councilwoman Deb Denys, who were issued proclamations by Volusia County to commemorate their years of public service.

Kelley began his political career in 1993 as an Ormond Beach City Commissioner, where he served until 1997, and then 2005-2009 before becoming mayor of the city in 2010. He served in that role until 2016 when he ran for County Council chair. Earlier this year, he opted out of running for a second

City votes to end lease with golf course

Citizen committee to help buy land?

River Bend Management Group of Florida LLC has less than two weeks to pay the city about $25,000 in late rent to prevent a termination of its lease on the River Bend Golf Club property.

In total, the management group owes the city $64,000 in rent, according to a city memo. The city’s desire to cut ties with the management group isn’t unexpected, seeing as it has been in a legal dispute with Volusia County since 2018 over what now totals $230,000 in unpaid taxes since 2013. The property was considered tax-exempt until 2013 when the county property appraiser began to assess taxes. It is his opinion that, should the management group fail to pay back the owed taxes, the burden will fall on the city, a position City Attorney Randy Hayes vehemently opposes.

Now, seeing as the golf course’s golf cart lease is set to expire, and the owed taxes make it “impossible” for the management group to secure another golf cart lease, the city determined it is unlikely the group will be able to meet its rent obligation.

The Ormond Beach City Commission voted 4-1 to direct staff to bring back information regarding the creation of a new citizen advisory committee to help the commission identify, review and prioritize land near the Loop and other areas in the city that could be conserved for environmental or recreational purposes, according to a city memo.

This comes after a request by citizen Suzanne Scheiber for the city to buy 76 lots within Plantation Oaks to expand the development’s existing buffer. The committee would likely include a citizen appointed by each commissioner and two at-large appointments.

Commissioner Dwight Selby, who voted in favor the item, voiced concerns about the committee appearing to be a “top-down” initiative, rather than a request from citizens.

However, Mayor Bill Partington said he believed this would create a fair process to protect land. Commissioner Troy Kent voted against.

Thus, the City Commission voted unanimously at its Dec. 15 meeting to terminate the agreement should the management group fail to pay back the rent it owes. It was a last-minute addition to the agenda.

With a termination date set prior to Jan. 1, the city will avoid more taxes assessed to the golf club property. The management group told the News-Journal that the course will close by the end of the day on Dec. 31.

What will happen to the golf club property afterward?

That’s a bridge the city will have to cross come the New Year. Wes Norwood, on behalf of the management group, declined to comment.

Uphill battle for apartments?

Despite a 3-2 approval of a comprehensive land use map amendment related to the Tymber Creek Apartments project, the commissioners were wary about the project.

Several said a yes vote on this item didn’t guarantee they would approve the development down the road.

Commissioners Kent and Susan Persis voted no.

I

f you spend $100 at a locally owned store, $68 stays in your community. If you spend $100 in a mega-online retailer, $43 stays in your community.

This statistic by Independent We Stand, a pro-small business organization, is the reason Ormond Beach MainStreet Executive Director Julia Truilo states supporting small businesses is so important for the community.

With 217 businesses in the downtown district — which spans from Orchard Street to A1A — momand-pop shops account for 80% of these businesses.

Ormond Beach is lucky, Truilo said. While that same split might be commonly found in towns of 10,000 people or less, that may not always be the case for towns with populations hovering in the 40,000s like Ormond.

So, when the news broke that the Christmas parade would not be happening due to COVID-19, MainStreet got together with the city’s Leisure Services and tried to come up with a way to bring business to the downtown. Truilo credits the idea of “Merry and Bright on Main Street” to Leisure Services, particularly Stefan Sibley.

“The holiday season, for every business everywhere, is a huge part of their annual income,” Truilo said. “We wanted to be sure that folks remembered that these stores are here for them.”

Merry and Bright on Main Street, which runs until Saturday, Dec. 19, featured a contest for businesses in the downtown district to decorate their storefronts in order to win prizes. Judging took place on Saturday, Dec. 12, and the first place winner who took home $2,000 for their decorations was Dunn’s Attic. Second place went to Geri Westfall Real Estate, which won $1,000, and the third place prize of $750 was awarded to Elements of Design.

The Neighborhood Shop took home an honorable mention.

Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and the City Commission also rode through the downtown as part of the event.

It took Hank Adams, of Geri Westfall Real Estate, about three days to put together the display in the front porch of his and his wife’s business. Last year, he also decorated for Christmas, and contest or no contest he was going to decorate this year. In fact, the second place winner almost didn’t enter, but decided to give it a go at the end.

Adams enjoyed seeing other businesses decorate their storefronts, especially as some have challenges regarding space and can’t do much more than decorate their windows. While he was working on his own display, which features inflatables, Christmas music and a slew of blue lights, he said people stopped by and paused for a minute. It was never about the contest, Adams said.

“When people stop there and they listen to the music and they look at it, and they smile — that’s why,” he said.

It was always his wife, Geri Westfall’s, dream to have a business in downtown. Come January, the couple will celebrate their second year of achieving that.

He has plans for next year’s display and hopes the city and Main Street continue to hold this competition annually as a way to bring more vibrancy to the downtown district during the holidays.

What does economic development look like for Ormond Beach?

Truilo said that’s a question Main Street is discussing.

There aren’t many big box retailers in the downtown, nor national chains. You can count those on your fingers and toes, Truilo said. That’s partly attributed to the district’s focus on design guidelines and emphasis of redevelopment, she explained, which often discourages those seeking a “cookie-cutter” building process.

It’s also because the culture surrounding the shop local initiative is active. The Small Business Saturday event last month was very successful, Truilo said, as the community has a real desire to support these businesses.

It’s something Main Street has been working toward these past 25 years.

“It’s a lot of messaging over 25 years,” Truilo said. “First that we can do it and now that we have it, that we should conserve it.”

2020 has been a difficult year for many, but Truilo said having the opportunity to take an evening stroll through the downtown to look at the decorations can be refreshing.

“If we can preserve this, I’d love to see us grow it and have more businesses participate,” she said.

In 2019, Ormond Beach’s employment peaked at 19,911 jobs. It hit a 10year low of 15,954 in April 2020. Since then, recovery has been relatively swift as businesses reopened in the summer months, and the most recent labor report from the state shows that the city’s employment totaled 18,606 in October.

City Economic Development Director Brian Rademacher said he was optimistic, but one thing to keep in mind is that employment data is a lagging indicator of the economy’s welfare as it is always a month behind.

There’s no guess as to when Ormond will return to 19,000 jobs, since much of that is contingent upon the COVID-19 vaccine and future outbreaks.

However, Rademacher said companies have adapted to working under CDC guidance and having part of their workforce work remotely. The county grant programs assisting businesses, of which Ormond businesses received 524 totalling $1.5 million, also helped.

“Again, cautiously optimistic as we see the businesses getting back to business and hiring more, and hopefully we’ll continue to see that moving forward into 2021,” Rademacher said.

In the city, 19% of employment in the city is under service occupations, a category which includes mom and pop shops. The largest percentage, 39%, is management and businesses which is made up of the larger insurance companies such as Security First. The second largest industry in the city is sales and office, accounting for 26.87% of employment.

Rademacher said his hopes for 2021 is to continue to develop the workforce, find ways to improve the local supply chain of manufacturer to rely less on the import of materials and keep track of the shifting dynamics in the workfore as employers rely on remote workers.

Denys served on the Volusia County School Board from 1994 to 1998, and then was elected to the council in 2013, where she has since served representing District 3. Upon Kelley’s announcement that he wouldn’t run for re-election, Denys resigned her District 3 seat to run for chair against Jeff Brower, who won the November election.

Regardless of her loss, Denys remained optimistic for the future of the county.

“Volusia County, our better days are yet ahead,” Denys said. “I really believe that.”

The proclamation made in her honor highlighted her advocacy for clean water, being the former chair of the Indian River Lagoon Council, and mentioned her efforts to bring more aerospace industry into Volusia, as well as her work with regional transportation issues and projects.

In turn, Kelley’s proclamation shone a spotlight on his leadership following the local recovery efforts for three hurricanes, his service on boards such as the Volusia Water Alliance, and his efforts in building bridges in the community through strengthening the county relationship with cities, chambers of commerce, regional organizations and residents.

Kelley’s son, Brian Kelley, singer of the Florida Georgia Line, attended the meeting and spoke fondly of his memories with his father back when he ran for the Ormond Beach City Commission.

He said his father got their family excited to be involved in their community.

“It’s incredible,” Brian Kelley said. “You’re a legend. Thank you. You’ve done so much for so many over the years. You’ve made Ormond Beach, Volusia County, a much more beautiful, safer, amazing place.”

Their colleagues on the council lamented the loss of institutional knowledge with their departure, and stressed the time and responsibility involved in serving on the council. Councilwoman Billie Wheeler denounced claims of corruption, which were part of the narrative during the recent election.

“Not one of us has ever, ever stepped over that line,” Wheeler said.

The new council, to be sworn into office on Jan. 7, 2021, will have both opportunities and challenges in the future and will be poised to take them on, Kelley said during his closing remarks.

He said he had no regrets regarding his decisions, and that they did what he always wanted to do: leave Volusia better than it was before.

‘He made you feel

important’ Flagler Palm Coast remembers Principal Russell BRIAN MCMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

R

esponding to tragedy with a fight song, Flagler Palm Coast High School hosted a memorial event Dec. 11 for Principal James “Tom” Russell, who died Dec. 9 after a three-week battle with COVID-19.

Dozens of cars lined up in the parking lot at FPC and honked their horns as they drove past the football stadium and listened to the band play the fight song. The plan was for the lights at the stadium to shine in the night for 20 minutes, 20 seconds in his honor.

It was a fitting tribute, said Evana Fretterd, Student Government Association activities director. When the pandemic prevented students from returning to school after spring break at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, Russell was extremely sensitive to the members of the Class of 2020, who were missing out on prom and grad activities.

“He made it a point to start something,” Fretterd recalled, “so they had Friday Night Lights.”

Every Friday, she said, Russell would go to the stadium and talk to a staff member on Facebook Live, sharing information and encouragement with the FPC families.

The Dec. 11 event was intended to commemorate his spirit of inclusion and love for the students by hosting another Friday Night Lights in his honor.

Russell also started a tradition of having the fight song played during the morning announcements, which is why the band played on Dec. 11.

Fretterd said that as she organized the drive thru and recruited people to help, everyone was enthusiastic.

“There were a lot of yeses in a time of nos,” she said.

GENUINE EMPATHY

Fretterd was one of many who told similar stories of Russell’s genuine love for the staff and students. After serving as superintendent of Volusia County Schools for several years, Russell was hired as FPC’s principal only before the 2019-2020 school year, and yet, Fretterd said, “You would think he was here for 20 years. His impact is obvious.”

Ginger Smith, a 1997 FPC alumna who is now the front desk receptionist, said, “He loved his support staff. He really cared about us.”

Fetu Kiliona Kalawaianui, registrar, called him “a true, genuine person. He made me feel like my job was important.”

Assistant Principal Amy Ferrer first met Russell when she worked at Mainland High School, when Russell was superintendent in Volusia.

“He was inherently empathetic,” Ferrer said during the Dec. 11 drive-thru event. “He always knew who I was. I don’t know how he did it, but he just knew. He knew my daughter’s name.”

Teacher Michael Rinyu also told a story of how Russell proved he cared. Soon after Russell was hired, he drove through Orlando traffic just to see Rinyu and two students speak at a conference for about 15 minutes. It was the first time Rinyu met Russell.

“He told us what a great job we did,” Rinyu said. “It immediately showed me what kind of a person he was. He went out of his way to tell us we were important. He listened more than he talked. You always felt important.”

Bookeeper Linda Longo said Russell always asked the support staff, “How can I help you?”

Exceptional Student Education teacher Katie Kastner called him “genuine.” “He wanted to know what you did, but it was more important to know you as a person,” she said.

VOLUSIA COUNTY SCHOOLS REMEMBERS RUSSELL On Dec. 9, Volusia County Schools issued a statement commemorating Russell’s legacy in its district. The statement reads: “It is with a heavy heart that we share that Tom Russell, former Superintendent of Volusia County Schools, has passed away. Mr. Russell was with VCS for 28 years. During that time, he had many different roles – he was a teacher, an Assistant Principal, a Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent. He was a kind and compassionate educator, leader, and friend. He will be greatly missed here in Volusia County, as well as in Flagler County where he was Principal of Flagler Palm Coast High School.

Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Julie, his children, and grandchildren, as well as the many colleagues and friends who worked with him over the years.

Please keep the Russell family in your thoughts in the coming days.”

A memorial service for Russell is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, at the Jackie Robinson Ballpark, located at 105. E. Orange Ave. The family requests attendees to dress warm, wear a mask and social distance.

“He was inspirational to the whole school,” Skinner said. “He brought up our spirits.”

“He knew our names,” Pilecki said.

‘FPC IS A FAMILY’

As the cars finished driving through the bus loop and the lights were turned off, one student remained: Allie Metz.

Metz, a member of SGA, was walking the bus loop and taking down the banners that she had helped create earlier in the day to honor Russell. She felt sad, but there was something more.

“I also see such a great thing happening,” she said. “FPC is a family, so it’s great to see that we did something like this for someone passing who was so important.”

She will remember Russell for being a constant presence in the cafeteria, talking to students.

“He would ask how your day was,” she recalled. “He would see you at an SGA event, and he would ask questions, and you would feel important. He would make you feel singled out in a good way. He made people feel important.”

BRIEFS Grand jury report says Florida’s mental health system is a ‘mess’ A statewide grand jury studying school safety issued an interim report Dec. 10 that tore into Florida’s mental-health system, saying that “deficiencies in funding, leadership and services related to mental health care tend to turn up everywhere like bad pennies.”

“This grand jury has received a great deal of evidence and testimony regarding financial deficiencies, conflicts between various agencies over information sharing and privacy, inadequate or inefficient provision of services and a number of other serious problems,” the report said. “To put it bluntly, our mental health care ‘system’ — if one can even call it that — is a mess, and we have formulated a spate of recommendations for straightforward improvement and further study in this critical area.”

The 27-page document posted on the Florida Supreme Court website was the third interim report issued by the grand jury, which the court impaneled in February 2019 at the request of Gov. Ron DeSantis. The request came a year after a gunman killed 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

‘Magical’ moment as COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Florida The first wave of coronavirus vaccinations began in Florida on Dec. 14, with health-care workers in Tampa and Jacksonville among the first to get inoculated.

Gov. Ron DeSantis was on hand at Tampa General Hospital as the first shot there was administered to Vanessa Arroyo, a 31-year-old registered nurse. COVID-19 vaccinations also were administered to workers at UF Health Jacksonville, and Memorial Healthcare System in Broward County planned an afternoon news conference, saying an initial shipment would be used to inoculate front-line workers.

“Today, we will have shots going into arms,” said DeSantis, who signed the FedEx delivery that brought about 20,000 doses to Tampa General Hospital. “This is a game-changer. It’s a great day for the United States, it’s a great day for the state of Florida.”

DUMPSTER FIRE 9:34 a.m. — 100 block of Domicilio Avenue Vandalism. A local school’s dumpster was set on fire early in the morning, launching the campus adviser into action to put it out. When one of the assistant principals arrived at the scene, the dumpster was still smoldering and had to be hosed down.

The sides of the dumpster were charred, according to the police incident report, and the lid was melted and the inside contents burned. While searching the dumpster, a burnt skillet was found. Video footage from the school showed two adults approached the dumpster, possibly through a cut section of the fence, and ignite the fire. They continued walking the campus “while searching for opportunities to commit crimes,” the report states.

The dumpster is valued at $800.

ROAD RAGE 1:04 p.m. — Intersection of North Yonge Street and West Granada Boulevard Disturbance. A 65-year-old Daytona man and a 48-year-old Ormond Beach man got into a heated verbal argument on the road, and as a result, the Daytona man began to follow the Ormond man and told police that he was going to run him over.

The Daytona man told police that he was stopped at a red light when the Ormond man got off his motorcycle and approached him, yelling through the open vehicle window to the point that spit landed in his face, according to the police report. He said the Ormond man then went back to his bike, got into the lane beside the Daytona man’s car and punched his mirror.

The Ormond man told police a different story. He said that the Daytona man was following him too closely through several stoplights. He tried to signal that this was an issue, but was unsuccessful. He said that the Daytona man pulled up next to his lane, cursed him out and threw out several racial slurs.

The Ormond man is Hispanic.

AIRPORT EMPLOYEES OBTAIN RECOGNITION Nine employees at the Daytona Beach International Airport have been recognized by the American Association of Airport Executives for excellence, according to a press release.

The AAAE recognized the airport with a Digicast Excellence in Airport Training award for training completed in 2019. Airport training is led by Training Coordinator Dulce Ayala. Additionally, Airport Security Coordinator Ricky Burts completed the airport certified employee security program.

K

enilworth Avenue runs through a quiet Ormond Beach neighborhood just east of U.S. 1. That changed Saturday, Dec. 12, when residents could hear the sound of bagpipes drifting down the street coming from the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge.

It was the kickoff of the Ormond Beach Backyard Highland Games.

Dec. 12 marked the second backyard games being held within three months in Ormond Beach, and Dawn Allestad Schull is not stopping at two. After the St. Augustine Highland Games were canceled, Schull asked fellow athletes if they still wanted to throw. They got together which led to the inception of the backyard games.

Schull is currently on the board for the Foundation of Scottish Athletics.

“My goal is that the Highland Games continue despite all of the festivals being canceled,” she said. “I wanted to have a game that would benefit the local community while letting the community know about Scottish Highland Games.”

Saturday’s games benefitted The Family Renew Community of Volusia County. Damon Sansom, master of the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge, chose the charity and provided the venue where the games were held. Clan Kringle: Throwing for a Cause was started in conjunction with these games “to ensure that every child had a toy under the Christmas tree” according to their Facebook page.

S a t u rd ay ’s eve n t wa s considered a light weight games and included five events with seven divisions participating.

There were 40 athletes competing in sheaf, hammer throw, stone throw, light weight for distance and the famous caber toss.

By noon on Dec. 12, Ann-Marie Willacker already had four medals.

At the larger games, she competes in eight of the nine events on the event list. She hasn’t quite figured how to do the caber toss from her wheel chair.

“I’ll figure it out,” she said.

“Before I was in a wheel chair, I was really interested in power lifting. Right now, I train every Sunday and also with an adaptive athlete trainer online.”

While the athletes competed, there was hot chocolate to sip and a Fletcher’s Irish Pub food truck was nearby ready to serve. Santa Claus also made an appearance, listening to Christmas wishes while giving books and toys to the children.

“The Highland Games is like a big family event and everybody treats each other like brothers and sisters,” said 13-year-old master scorekeeper Alanah Schull, who has been going to the Highland Games for four years.

After a day of intense competition, athletes and their families headed over to Fletcher’s Irish Pub where the Fletcher Clan hosted a “Shave for the Brave” event which benefitted the Live Like Cameron Foundation. Anyone sporting a beard that was up for the challenge donated $100 to the foundation and got a professional shave by barbers from the Proper Barber Co. or RustyRazor barbershop. Bill Fletcher, owner of Fletcher’s Irish Pub, declared that donations collected totaled $13,285.

Not a bad night for the clean-shaven clansmen.

Ormond Beach boy creates paintings to fundraise for Food Brings Hope It all started with an art class assignment.

Now, 6-year-old Carter Hoffman is an abstract artist in the making.

The Hoffmans kitchen is now a temporary art studio.

A large tarp covers the floor beside their kitchen island, dotted with swipes of acrylic paint of various colors. It’s a new solution, as the previous painting location (the backyard patio) is now a drying station for the paintings that have been glossed with an epoxy resin.

Who’s the Picasso of the family? Six-year-old Carter Hoffman. A couple of weeks ago, Carter’s art assignment for his Volusia Online class instructed him to create an abstract painting using three different colors of paint and a water bottle. Carter loved it so much, he asked his parents to do more. The Hoffmans bought him more supplies, and with each painting, he creatively began to experiment. He ran a fork through the paint, moved the colors by tilting the canvas and dotted it with circles of paint. “The dots are like his little signature,� said Matthew Hoffman, Carter’s father. “He puts dots on every single piece of artwork.�

the parents discussed what to do with them. At first, they thought about gifting them to their family members this Christmas but then they wondered if there was some way to give back to the community through art.

They spoke with Carter and the three decided to sell his paintings to raise funds for Food Brings Hope, a local nonprofit

that serves over 1,700 children in Volusia and Flagler County by providing meals, academic help and after school programs. Carter’s mother, Katie Hoffman, became familiar with Food Brings Hope through her employer, AdventHealth, which holds an annual Day of Caring volunteering event. Her department last year chose Food Brings Hope as

their charity of choice. “We wanted to do something that was right here in the community, and so then we started researching them and saw how much they do for the school kids,� she said.

Matthew Hoffman posted their initiative on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and within four days, Carter had sold 18 paintings.

They’re not asking for a definite price per painting, just whatever the interested individual wishes to donate to the nonprofit. As parents, he said they’re extremely proud of their son. “It’s really amazing to see people want to give back, the same way that he has wanted to give back through his artwork,� Hoffman said. “It’s just really neat to see the outpouring of support that people have given him.�

Art runs in the family. Hoffman himself paints, having completed a minor in art in college, and Carter often shows interest when his father is working on a piece.

He’s shown him how to work with charcoal, pencil and various other mediums. “He’s pretty in tune to art in general, but he’s definitely shown some talent with this,� Hoffman said.

When he’s not painting, Carter loves sports. He asks his parents to play football with him regularly, and also enjoys soccer. But for now, he’s spending a lot of time on the tarp in the kitchen. “Now it’s all dirty of paint,�

Music under the bridge

Musicians find outlet in casual jam sessions

The Ormond Beach Acoustic Jammers like two things: music and having fun.

With members from Volusia, Flagler, Lake, St. Johns and other counties in north and central Florida, the group is made up of adults who love playing music — whether that be folk, rock, jazz, pop or hits from the 1960s and ’70s. It was founded by Ormond Beach resident Jim Rumora in December 2018, shortly after he moved to the area from Jacksonville.

He had looked for similar groups in town, but, finding none, decided to create his own. One of the first members was Ormond Beach resident Roger Duvernoy, who helped spread the word to other local musicians.

The group now has 34 members listed on its Meetup website, though Rumora said people often stop by during each meeting to join the jam session.

It’s a “relaxed, no pressure, no judgment, no politics, no religion zone,” according to the group’s flyer, perfect for all players.

“There’s a lot of people out there who have played instruments in their younger days, like me, and then had to work for a living, and then when it got later in life, had more of an opportunity to start playing again but didn’t have anyone to play with,” Rumora said.

The groups meets under the Granada Bridge at Fortunato Park every other Saturday. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, following a hiatus of a few months, they’ve began meeting outdoors to practice social distancing. It’s been great having an outlet, Rumora said.

The visibility of being underneath the bridge where many walk and exercise has also helped their membership. Rumora said one individual happened to be walking by when he heard them playing. He had been feeling down, Rumora explained, but said that listening to them changed his day.

“That’s exactly what people are supposed to get out of this — that it’s a chance to feel rewarded and just good about yourself and others,” Rumora said. “It’s a totally positive experience.”

That person decided to join.

The group is always looking to add new members. Dues are typically $6 a year, but because of the pandemic, dues have been waived.

eabreeze boys varsity soccer team played Gainesville Dec. 10 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Both teams arrived on the pitch with winning records, the Sandcrabs at 4-1-2 and the Hurricanes with 5-01, indicating a tough upcoming match between the two teams.

The game remained scoreless until 36 minutes into the first half when senior Sandcrab Noah Korfant scored a goal. Thirteen minutes later, he followed it up with a successful penalty kick.

With five minutes left in the first half, senior Chance Shamlou scored. He snuck another goal in with two minutes left, bringing Seabreeze to 4-0 at the half.

Goalie Jake Feigenbaum had four saves, but the Hurricanes rallied for two goals in the second half. Their drive was halted by the game clock. Final score 4-2 for a Sandcrabs win.

Seabreeze finished with a 5-1-2 record. Hurricanes added a loss to their record leaving the match at 5-1-1. Seabreeze is currently first in the 5A-District 4 soccer standings, while the Hurricanes are in second.

Through her work and family, Ren lived in and enjoyed traveling between the cities of Athens, Atlanta, Orlando, Flagler Beach, Ormond Beach, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Richmond, and Cincinnati. Ren was a passionate fan of both music (Classical & Jazz) and art. She loved visiting art museums in the cities she traveled to for work and listening to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra play live with her brother. Ren was devoted to her family – a consistent and welcomed presence at all of life’s im-
