THE CASEMENTS The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive, is a 9,000 square-foot historical home, once the winter home of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., and is listed on the National Register of historic places. It has been the Cultural Center for the community for over 30 years. The Casements Guild volunteers provide daily tours (Mon-Fri 10 AM - 3:00 PM; Sat 9:30-10:30 AM) and operate a gift shop. Large group tours by appointment only. The home has many rooms that are used for various classes (dance, art, exercise) and a kitchen used for cooking classes. he Ormond Beach Observer highlights the best and most bizzare Cops Corners of 2019.

MARCH 20

IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH 11 a.m. — 1500 block of San Marco Drive Battery touch. Two Ormond Beach roommates, a 28-year-old man and woman, were told to separate by police after they got into a physical argument which involved the woman spitting on the man in hopes he would catch her Scarlet fever.

According to a police report, the pair began arguing after the woman asked the man to get her food since she was sick.

Because of battery from both, and conflicting stories, police made no arrests.

APRIL 12

DRUNK HONESTY 4:27 p.m. — Intersection of I-95 and West Granada Boulevard DUI. In the middle of a drunk driving investigation, a 60-year-old New Jersey man tried to distract the officer multiple times by asking him about his tattoos and why he didn’t shave his beard.

The officer explained that the agency allows them to grow facial hair. The man proceeded to tell the officer he was ugly and that he wouldn’t look at the pen the officer was holding during the exercise.

The officer had stopped the man after he saw him run a red light to turn onto the northbound ramp of I-95. The man declined to perform several field sobriety exercises, claiming he had “atrophied” in his feet. He was arrested and taken to jail.

JULY 11

BITTERSWEET GASOLINE 6:06 p.m. — 2000 block of Lipizzan Trail Information. A 63-year-old Ormond Beach resident accused his ex-wife of putting sugar in the gas tank of his lawn mower due to having a scheduled court date at the end of the month. The man said that after his lawn mower stopped working, he stuck a stick in the tank, pulled it out, licked it, and that “it tasted sweet.”

VEGGIE TALES 12:01 a.m. — 1000 block of Ocean Shore Boulevard Unarmed burglary. An exemployee from a local resort was charged with petit theft and unarmed burglary after she entered the housekeeping room and heated a bowl of frozen broccoli to eat.

According to police, the night auditor of the resort went to the housekeeping room to assist a guest and found the 37-year-old Daytona Beach woman there.

She had been fired about a week before, so he asked her what she was doing. The woman left quickly.

Left behind was a steaming bowl of broccoli that the night auditor told police the woman must have made for herself, as he was the only employee onsite. The night auditor told police he wanted to press charges for the incident.

Police report that as the officer was getting the man’s statement, the man was mocking the officer and speaking poorly of the police department. The reporting officer noted that it was difficult to speak with the man because of the mocking and insults. While at the scene, the officer saw the man successfully start the lawn mower twice, according to the report. The officer gave the man his card, and the man told him “You can leave now.” The officer then left.

WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER 7:26 a.m. — First block of Pebble Beach Drive Vandalism. An Ormond Beach man woke up to see his car had been decorated with broken eggs, Italian dressing and a whole rotisserie chicken, the latter of which was placed on the driver’s side front wheel.

He told police he suspected his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend committed the offense after she broke up with him to be with the Ormond Beach man. Police asked the girlfriend to call her ex, who denied any involvement. He just talked about how she cheated on him while they were together, police reported.

Police later called the ex, who again, said he didn’t do it.

Surveillance footage obtained later didn’t show the ex’s car in the area either, so police determined all investigative leads have been exhausted at this point.

he 2019 district tournament was all about “redemption”for Seabreeze’s flag football team.

The Sandcrabs defeated Pine Ridge 19-13 to advance to the district championship for the second year in a row, where they faced No. 1-seed Mainland — for the second year in a row. Down 7-6 with 1:24 remaining in the game, Sandcrabs quarterback Bailey McQuarrie, who dropped back and with defenders in her face, launched the ball downfield. Teammate Alex Nelson caught it for a touchdown. The Sandcrabs’ defense forced a turnover on downs to win the game 12-7.

SANDCRABS FOOTBALL SEES GROWTH IN YEAR 1 UNDER BROWN

Seabreeze’s football team went 1-9 in the third and final season under ex-head coach Troy Coke in 2018. Coke stepped down in December 2018, and formerFather Lopez defensive coordinator Pat Brown was hired to the position. The Sandcrabs went 5-5 in Brown’s first season at the helm, with victories over Matanzas, Deltona, Winter Springs, Halifax Academy and Pine Ridge.

It was the Sandcrabs’ winningest season since 2013.

SANDCRABS BOYS SOCCER FALLS SHORT IN STATE TITLE GAME

The journey to their third straight state championship appearance was nothing short of breathtaking. The Sandcrabs’ boys soccer team came back from being down 3-0 and outlasted Ponte Vedra in a penalty shootout in the Class 3A boys soccer state semifinal on Feb. 16. MAINLAND BOYS BASKETBALL BATTLES IN PLAYOFFS

The Buccaneers’ boys basketball team fell 49-47 to Auburndale in the 2019 FHSAA State Playoffs on Feb. 26, but that doesn’t mean the Buccaneers didn’t have an otherwise incredible season.

Mainland was led by seniors Rodney Rhoden and Johnny Brown, both of whom are playing college ball now, and then-junior Jordan Sears, the team’s leading scorer.

The Buccaneers concluded the season 27-2 record and won 26 games in a row. In addition, the Buccaneers defeated rival Atlantic three-straight times.

BUCS GIRLS TRACK PLACES SIXTH AT STATES

Mainland’s girls track and field team qualified 20 athletes for the 3A FHSAA Track and Field State Championships May 3 and May 4 at the University of North Florida. The Buccaneers brought home 14 medals across 17 events and finished in sixth place as a team — their best finish ever.

Then-sophomore sprinter Cydney Wright — who competed in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay — was arguably the Buccaneers’ top performer. After being seeded second in the 100-meter dash, she placed fourth with a time of 11.80. Wright also earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash, which she competed in as a freshman last season, with a time of 24.09.
