Ormond Beach, are we ready for 2024? Thanks for making the Observer a part of your year.

JARLEENE ALMENAS MANAGING EDITOR

Well, I think we can all say 2023 has been quite something. A roller-

coaster, even. It’s always interesting to see what a new year brings to our small town, and in 2023, the team here at the Observer wrote over 1,300 stories — all about you, Ormond Beach, and the issues that we as a community are facing. To narrow down what should be featured in our yearly timeline edition is definitely a challenge. But here are some stories that I think shaped our local news cycle. Let’s start with the fuel farm. In August, residents discovered Belvedere Terminals sought to construct a fuel terminal at 874 Hull Road in unincorporated Volusia County, on the city’s border and in close prox-

BRIEFS Pedestrian killed in crash on U.S. 1 near Destination Daytona A pedestrian was killed around 2:50 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, in Ormond Beach after she was struck by a car on U.S. 1, north of Destination Daytona Lane, Florida Highway Patrol reported. The woman was walking on the outside lane of U.S. 1, not in a marked crosswalk, when a 33-yearold Palm Coast woman driving northbound on the highway collided with her. The pedestrian, whose identity has not been confirmed, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured. FHP reports the crash remains under investigation.

Intracoastal Bank announces Ryan Page as its new CEO The board of directors of Intracoastal Bank recently announced bank President Ryan Page has been appointed the additional role of

imity to the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, Bear Creek, Ormond Lakes and local businesses. What would follow is months of strong civic engagement that resulted in severe pushback against the company. Now at the end of the year, not only has the city eliminated its “I-2 Heavy Industrial” zoning from its code, but Volusia County has enacted a moratorium on heavy industrial development, halting an application by Belvedere Terminals two weeks later. Almost at the same time, Tomoka Oaks residents were busy pushing back against a 272-home development proposal for their former golf course. The attendance for the

three public hearings held by the Planning Board and the City Commission was so large, the meetings were held at local churches instead of City Hall. After the developers of Tomoka Reserve were directed to revisit their plans and present a less dense project to the Planning Board, they instead opted to stop negotiations and pursue a rezoning that will allow them to build at least 300 homes. We’ll be following this issue closely next year. When you add in all other remarkable things that happened — the launch of Ormond Burger Week, the OBMS band recognizing former longtime band director Walter Bailey with a tribute concert,

the groundbreaking for the new Tomoka Elementary, the opening of a dog beach in Ormond Beach and the long list of new businesses and cafes in town — I think it’s safe to say 2023 was noteworthy. And citizen engagement was at the center of it all. Not every community can say the same, so congrats Ormond Beach! Thank you for letting us document it all. We’ll see you in 2024.

His expanded duties reflect his important role in helping us achieve our goal of being the best financial services company in our community. This shows the bank’s commitment to successful board and management succession with next generation talent.” Ryan Page has been serving as president since January 2021. Ryan Page is a Florida native and a third generation Volusia/Flagler resident. Though the Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution couldn’t hold its annual Wreaths Across America event on Dec. 16 due to inclement weather, the chapter still made sure veterans’ graves were honored. On Dec. 18, the chapter, Hillside Angels and some members of the public met at Hillside Cemetery and Gethsemane Cemetery to lay wreaths on veterans’ graves. A wreath was also placed at the James Ormond tomb, located at the James Ormond Tomb Park off Old Dixie Highway. Wreaths Across America aims to help people “remember the fallen, honor those that serve and their families, and teach the next generation about the value of freedom,” according to its mission statement. The event began in 1992 in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. Last year, 3,702 locations nationwide hosted a Wreaths Across

UNHOLY THEFT 5:11 p.m. — 600 block of South Nova Road, Ormond Beach Burglary. A local church employee called police after three containers of holy oil were stolen. According to a police report, the employee told the reporting officer that the oils were taken from a cabinet near the altar, and that she didn’t know exactly when the items were taken, but that they were first noticed missing on Dec. 30. The officer tried to find fingerprints, but was unsuccessful. The employee suspected the culprit was the same person who left a drug pipe on the altar during a previous incident.

FEB. 7

SAUCY DRAMA 12:30 p.m. — First block of Bella Vita Way, Ormond Beach Vandalism. The president of a local homeowners association reported a crime of pungent proportions. He told police that, sometime within a five-day period, someone had entered the men’s restroom by the community’s pool and sprayed mustard on the floor, walls, ceilings and fixtures, according to a police report. No permanent damage was done, but the HOA president estimated that pressure washing the restroom would cost the HOA between $100 and $200. The HOA wishes to press charges if a suspect is identified. The HOA president suspected a resident of the neighborhood was responsible for the incident, “due to being a common nuisance since moving into the area,” according to the police report.

GUMMIES ON THE MIND 5:53 p.m. — Intersection of West Granada Boulevard and North Orchard Street, Ormond Beach DUI. A crash between a car and a public bus resulted in the arrest of one man who, according to a police report, ate one too many THC gummies. Police responded to the scene of the crash, where the bus driver reported he had been stopped when the car hit the bus at a “relatively low rate of speed.” There were no injuries. According to a police report, officers soon discovered that the driver of the car, a 65-year-old man from Ohio, was diabetic. Police found multiple needles inside the car, and paramedics found that the man’s blood sugar was dangerously high. His passenger was also reported to be going in and out of consciousness, though she wasn’t diabetic herself. Both were taken to the hospital. Once there, the man agreed to speak with the reporting officer and said that he had gone to a marijuana dispensary the day before and bought a pack of THC gummies. Both he and his passenger tried them, and because he didn’t “feel anything at first,” he took more before he and his passenger left the hotel to get pizza. He ate a total of four THC gummies. A search of his passenger’s personal items turned up a small foil wrapper full of cocaine, which the man admitted they both used in addition to the THC gummies. He was taken to jail.

BEAR-Y DIFFERENT 12:09 p.m. — 100 block of Midway Avenue, Ormond Beach Animal bite. An Ormond Beach woman called police to report that a bear had bitten off her dog’s nose. Yes, a bear. The woman told police that the “bear” had run up a tree in her backyard after the incident, according to a police report. Her dog ran underneath the foundation of her home. When the reporting officer arrived, he discovered that the “bear” was actually a large raccoon. The raccoon was lying on a branch about 40 feet up in a tree, and remained there for the entire time police were at the scene. The dog, which is vaccinated against rabies, suffered bite marks and scratches on her snout and her paws. Police placed a trap for the raccoon at the base of the tree, but it was still empty the next day and the raccoon had left.

PUTRID PICKUP 7:24 a.m. — First block of Brookwood Court, Ormond Beach Suspicious vehicle. A police officer found rotting deer carcasses in the bed of a pickup truck after a resident complained of a bad smell coming from the vehicle. The truck had been parked in front of the resident’s home for about 24 hours, and the resident had not seen anyone entering or exiting the truck during that time, according to a police report. The officer tried to contact the truck’s registered owner, but was unsuccessful. Because the truck was also blocking traffic, police towed the vehicle.

As 2023 comes to a close and 2024 is about to begin, I find myself reflecting on the age-old fatherhood question: Am I the tough guy in the “Free For All Friday” ad below, or the nice guy, as depicted above? As a father of five, I find that I’m often bouncing between the two personas, especially when my kids are sick. “All right, up and at ’em!” I’ll say in my best tough-guy voice. “That fever is nothing a little exercise won’t fix!” We’ve had three out of our five kids go down with fevers in the past week, and I know my family isn’t alone: Several of my business meetings have been postponed by others because of illness.

Christmas traditions throughout Florida, who needs ice and snow? RANDY JAYE GUEST WRITER

Editor’s note: The following article was first published in Ormond Beach Historical Society’s newsletter, and reposted here with permission. The first observance of Christmas in what is now the United States occurred in Florida in 1539. The Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto and his expedition of 600 people including soldiers, slaves, craftsmen and 12 Catholic priests celebrated the Christmas holiday while encamped at the Apalachee town of Anhaica (present-day Tallahassee). This Christmas celebration lacked the present-day traditions of gift exchanges, eggnog and holiday songs. However, it included a traditional Catholic Mass and a large feast (courtesy of the Apalachee food reserves that included maize and beans that were left behind when de Soto’s expedition forced these native people out of their settlement).

This first observance of Christmas was most likely not a very happy affair for de Soto’s expedition, as they were frequently attacked by the displaced native Apalachee people. The de Soto expedition reported that the Apalachee people even attempted to burn down their own town with flaming torches and arrows to chase the Spanish expedition away from their rightful lands. 19TH CENTURY FLORIDA CHRISTMAS TREES

After the American Civil War, an influx of people from northern states and immigrants from European countries started relocating to Florida to build settlements. Many of these post-Civil War settlers brought their traditional Christmas customs along, which included a traditional Christmas tree that was usually a cedar tree, Balsam fir, Douglas fir or Norfolk pine. Most of these kinds of tree species are not native to Florida. These new Floridians adapted by using native trees such as longleaf and sand pines. Interestingly, most of the native Florida trees do not have branches that support heavy traditional Christmas ornaments, so many of these nineteenth-century Christmas trees were decorated with

homemade lightweight items such as feathers, ribbons, shells and yarn. SOME CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS UNIQUE TO FLORIDA

In addition to Santa Claus being depicted in tropical settings on many vintage and current postcards and holiday cards, there are many other Christmas traditions unique to Florida. Many Floridians have substituted traditional Christmas dinner menu staples such as roasted turkey or baked ham with seafood feasts. Traditional desserts such as apple and cherry pie are oftentimes substituted with key lime pie. Surfing with Santa Claus was the idea of George Trosset, of Cocoa Beach. Dressing in a Santa suit or wearing tropical themed holiday shirts or swimwear on Christmas Eve to go surfing now attracts thousands of people to central Florida beaches. Santa arrives without a reindeerdrawn sleigh in many places around Florida. In the city of Apalachicola, Santa sails into town on a working shrimp boat. In Cocoa Beach, Santa skydives into town and lands on the beach. At the National Marine Sanctuary in the Florida Keys, Santa has occasionally been spotted coming to town in scuba gear.

CANDY TRAIL 2 a.m. — 1500 block of North U.S. 1, Ormond Beach Petit theft. Police arrested a 55-year-old Daytona Beach man who damaged a Reese’s candy display and stole $45 worth of the Peanut Butter Cups from a local dollar store. Officers responded to a burglary alarm in the early hours of the morning and arrived at the store to see that the entrance was wide open, according to a police report. After clearing the building and finding no one inside, police noticed that the Reese’s display was knocked over and a shopping cart was wedged between the doors of the cigarette case behind the register. Police reviewed surveillance footage that showed the man who was later arrested using the bottom of a shopping cart to pry open the doors of the store. Once inside, he tried to open the cigarette case with several items — the cart, an umbrella, a balloon grabber — but was unsuccessful. As his consolation prize, he stole candy from the shelves near the register, plus the entire display case of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. A store employee recognized the man as one of the transients who lives in the nearby woods, so police checked the area and followed “a trail of Reese’s candy” to a homeless camp, according to the report. While the camp was empty, police did find the display case with some candy still inside. The man was found by police two days later. He told officers he didn’t remember burglarizing the store, as he had been “very high and intoxicated.”

A brief history of Florida Christmas traditions

Stay tough during sick season With all the unique There’s nothing worse than sickness during the holidays, so I do my best to encourage recovery. “Mind over matter!” I tell my kids, as they are moaning on various couches and loveseats. “You have to will your body to wholeness!” Typically, when they’re sick and can’t go to school, my wife, Hailey, works from home and pampers them with extra screen time, tucking grandma’s quilts to their chins. She also rolls her eyes at my toughguy expression in the “Free For All Friday” ad below. One morning, Hailey was working at her desk in the family room when I was giving one of my inspirational pep talks. “If you pretend you aren’t sick,” I said, “you’ll feel better!” “Sorry, guys,” Hailey said, “Dad’s home today.” As much as I try to be tough, I can’t usually eliminate that niceguy persona, though, and I end up driving to the store for more lemonade — fresh, not from concentrate, because that’s the kind that my babies prefer when they’re sick. I guess I can’t stay tough forever.

Mainland girls basketball players celebrate their state championship after receiving their medals.

Bucs win two titles Mainland’s girls basketball and football teams were the best in their classifications in 2023.

BRENT WORONOFF ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Mainland’s football team had a year to think about its two-point loss to Lake Wales. Coach Travis Roland made sure of it. On the first day of practice, he showed the final seven minutes of the 2022 Class 3S state championship game so his players would remember how that loss felt. The Buccaneers made it back to the title game this year. This time, they won by two points. Jacob Gettelman’s 23-yard field goal in the waning seconds delivered the Bucs a 21-19 victory over St. Augustine for their first football state title in 20 years. “My heart is so full. These kids earned this — worked hard for this,” Roland said after the game. Mainland dominated offensively, outgaining the Yellow Jackets 505 yards to 204. But St. Augustine scored two special teams touchdowns in the first half to go into the locker room with a 13-0 lead. Quarterback Dennis Murray Jr., led Mainland’s second-half comeback with a 15-yard touchdown pass

and a 44-yard touchdown run. The senior accounted for 380 offensive yards. “Just the sheer will of wanting to win and (putting) it all out there for my guys kept me going,” Murray said. “… I’m going to leave it all out there on the field because this is my last game ever playing high school (football).” Mainland finished the season with a 14-1 record. But football was not the only Mainland sport to collect a state championship in 2023. The girls basketball team won a state title for the first time in school history. The basketball players fought through adversity to earn the championship. In a Jan. 14 game against University High, a skirmish broke out between the Bucs and Titans. The game was suspended and ruled a double forfeit. The Bucs were also forced to forfeit the following game and several players were suspended for multiple games. They recovered to advance to the Class 5A final four and blew by Kissimmee Gateway 56-23 in the state semifinals to advance to the final against five-time defending state champ Plantation American Heritage. The Bucs led by 20 points after the third quarter, but three starters fouled out in the fourth quarter and the lead dwindled to one point with seconds remaining. Mainland held on to win 62-61. “I’m so proud of these girls,” Mainland athletic director Terry Anthony said after the game. “To fight through the adversity of the suspensions, the not knowing if the season is going to be taken away from them and to come back and just put it all behind them and keep on marching is impressive.” Anovia Sheals led Mainland with 22 points and 13 rebounds in the title game. “Nothing compares to winning the state championship,” Bucs coach Brandon Stewart said. “As a coach, all year you try to talk to your girls about adversity and how it will be worth it. So when your word comes true, it’s a feeling like no other.” Here are the other top sports stories of the year: Mainland’s boys basketball team almost gave the school three titles in the calendar year. The Bucs advanced to the Class 5A championship game. They defeated St. Petersburg 44-38 in the state semifinals, but fell to Miami Belen Jesuit 49-30 in the final. the final. Seabreeze’s girls bowling team won its fourth consecutive district title and placed fourth at the state championships. During that run, the Sandcrabs won the state championship in 2021 and were runners-up in 2022. The Seabreeze boys bowling team also advanced to state and finished among the top six teams. Seabreeze’s Brayden Barnes advanced to the individual roundof-16 and placed 12th overall. Bowling in a league two days later, Barnes rolled his first sanctioned 300 game. Mainland’s flag football team advanced to the state final four for the first time with a 7-0 win over Boynton Beach Somerset Canyons. Kassie Stoner’s interception in the game’s closing minutes sealed the victory. The Bucs fell to state powerhouse Tampa Robinson in the state semifinals. The Tampa school went on to win its seventh consecutive Class 1A championship. Seabreeze’s boys and girls swim teams both placed fifth at the Class 2A state championships on Nov. 3. Freshman Alexis O’Keefe and juniors Cole Conlan and Martin Montalvo each won runner-up medals. Seabreeze won a district baseball championship for the first time since 2014. The Sandcrabs trounced Pine Ridge 12-2 in the title game and then won its regional quarterfinal, 2-1 over Wesley Chapel, as senior Evan Miller scattered five hits. Seabreeze’s season ended with a loss to Sebring in the regional semifinals. Seabreeze’s girls soccer team advanced to the regional finals. The Sandcrabs (15-8) won 12 games by shoutout.
