BRIEFS Animal Services celebrates 50,000 spay/neuter surgeries Volusia County Animal Services has completed 50,000 surgeries through its trap-neuter-return and low-cost spay/neuter programs, a landmark achievement in the ongoing mission to manage community cat populations and promote responsible pet ownership. Mayor’s Health and Fitness Challenge to start

The 2024 Mayor’s Health and Fitness Challenge will begin with a kick-off and weigh-in on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9-11 a.m. at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center. The eight-week program is a citywide initiative designed for individuals of all fitness levels, according to an announcement on the city’s website. The challenge is available to residents and city employees. Participants compete for cash prizes, awarded to one champion in each of the men’s, women’s and children’s category, based on the most significant reduction in body mass index. The categories are separated by the following age ranges: 17 and under 18-29 30-39 40-49 50-59 60-69 70-79 80 and older Registration costs $35 per individual or $70 for families with up to three children, 18 and under. Townhomes coming to Ormond Beach

Troy Kent to hold District 4 meeting next week

The Ormond Beach Planning Board unanimously recommended approval for preliminary plats for two upcoming subdivisions at its meeting on Thursday, Jan. 11. One of the preliminary plat recommended for approval is for a 180-lot townhome subdivision, to be called Bradford Park. The subdivision will span 24.92 acres and will be located south of the Pennsylvania Avenue right-of-way, east of I-95 and west of Plantation Oaks Boulevard. Planning Director Steven Spraker said this parcel of land was previously zoned for commercial development. It was rezoned for residential development last year. The townhome subdivision will be a sister project to Bradford Lakes, an 80-home subdivision that is part of Plantation Oaks, Spraker said. Board member Al Jorczak inquired about the cost of the townhome units. Attorney Glenn Storch, on behalf of developer Parker Mynchenberg, said they’re estimating the townhomes will be priced “in the high” $200,000 range, though he acknowledged the need for more affordable housing. “I totally agree with this as a father or 30-somethings,” Storch said. “Finding housing for the kids, for the next generation — not easy right now.” Board member Barry du Moulin also asked about whether a Planning Board member could be present when a developer conducts ecological studies on properties slated for development. He was concerned that the environmental report stated that, while no gopher tortoise burrows were observed during a cursory survey, the recommendation by the consultant was for a thorough survey to be conducted within 90 days of

approved was for phase 1B of Fountain View, a subdivision that will form part of Plantation Oaks, located east of I-95 and west of Plantation Oaks Boulevard. The subdivision will be composed of 137 single-family homes on about 77.91 acres, according to the city. Developer and engineer Parker Mynchenberg told the board that he expected construction of this phase to take 10 months to complete.

The previous 272-home development order application was directed by the City Commission to be reviewed again by the Planning Board due to concerns about density, traffic and irrigation in the buffer. Instead of continuing to pursue this, the developers opted to ask for a rezoning, which could allow them to build more homes than their previous proposal. Planning Director Steven Spraker said there’s been a lot of numbers floating around regarding the number of homes that could be built on the former golf course. “Quite honestly, we don’t know until we see a site plan that’s been engineered, it’s taken into (consideration) tree preservation, natural areas,” Spraker said. “So we’re not going to be able to answer it.” The city’s planning staff recommended the Planning Board deny the developers’ rezoning request to R-2, stating that the PRD should be preserved because of the property’s

MISCOMMUNICATION OR BULLYING?

Planning Board members were on alert since the start of the meeting. Earlier that morning, they had each received a letter from Karl Sanders, the attorney representing the developers, opposing that the HOA be granted “party-intervenor” status, which allows them to present their case before the board and the City Commission. The board saw it as an intimidation tactic and said it was an example of how developers are bullying volunteer boards and commissions their way. “I do not like getting an email at 7:18 this morning with the applicant sending out a letter with all kinds of objections and conditions and everything else,” Thomas said. “I look at that as either being totally unprepared or intimidation — and if you’re going to try and intimidate me, you might as well hit me upside the head with a two-by-four, because you’re going to get my attention.” Thomas said he didn’t appreciate being notified at the last minute, saying it was unfair to both the board members and the residents who attended the meeting. Board member GG Galloway said coming to the board with threats or with the intent to bully the board to approve a project is inappropriate. “It’s now time that we stand up to the land use attorneys and we work together instead of threaten us with words like, ‘I’m going to go nuclear on you,’” Galloway said. Sanders apologized to the board, saying that the letter he wrote was not written for the board, but for City Attorney Randy Hayes, and that the opposition has to be raised to be part of the record. “My communication was designed to ensure that Mr. Bayer had as much time as this board deemed necessary,

The developers of the proposed Tomoka Reserve subdivision are leaving another Ormond Beach Planning Board public hearing with a recommendation of denial. On Thursday, Jan. 11, the board reviewed a request to rezone the 147.94-acre former Tomoka Oaks golf course property from a Planned Residential Development to R-2 “Single-family low density” during its meeting, held at Tomoka Christian Church. Developers Carl Velie, Ray Barshay, Sheldon Rubin and Emily Rubin are pursuing a rezoning since their previous plan to construct 272-homes was turned down by the City Commission last November. The property was zoned R-2 prior to 2006, when it was rezoned PRD to allow a developer to build 35 townhomes and six condo buildings on 30 acres of the golf course, a development that never took place due to the recession. But the board believed that, just because it was previously zoned R-2, doesn’t mean it should be today, voting unanimously to recommend the commission deny the rezoning request. “Just because it used to be, to me, is not meeting the burden of proof,” Board Chair Doug Thomas said. The golf course has been coined the “hole in the doughnut” by Tomoka Oaks residents and Dennis Bayer, the attorney representing its homeowners’ association, because it is completely surrounded by the neighborhood. Planning Board member Troy Railsback said the developers purchased the former golf course property knowing that it came with a lack of entitlements since it was zoned PRD for the last 17 years. “If you fill the doughnut with a non-conforming use, or bad ingredients, it’s going to taste bad and it’s going to make us sick,” Railsback said. “They’re looking for sweet jelly to explode the whole doughnut hole.”

unique characteristics and because a PRD zoning provides the opportunity to “harmonize the challenges presented by the proposed development of the former golf course land in a manner that best satisfies the goals and objectives of the city’s comprehensive plan and land development code regulations,” according to a staff report. “The actions taken by Triumph Oaks of Ormond Beach I, LLC, show an unwillingness by the applicant to address concerns that have been identified by the Planning Board, the City Commission, and the residents of Tomoka Oaks subdivision,” the staff report states. The board was not there to rehash the previous 272-home development order application, Sanders said. All the developers are asking now, he said, is that the city revert the zoning district back to what it was historically: R-2. “So to the extent that there are any questions or concerns of any kind about any proposed development on this piece of property, we’re not going to talk about that tonight,” Sanders said. “That was the purpose of the prior hearings, where the PRD development was an attempt to negotiate an agreement that was acceptable to both the city and to the neighbors. That failed, so we move forward.” The property has no zoning entitlements under a PRD without a development order, Sanders said. There’s nothing the developers can do on the property without a rezoning granting them new entitlements, he argued. “We want an opportunity to have the same rights for our property,” Sanders said. “We’re entitled to have development rights for our property, just like everyone else, and what everyone is entitled to, in any jurisdiction, is a zoning code that lists zoning districts, allowed uses and development standards. We don’t have that anymore because the PRD expired, so we’re in limbo.”

HOA be granted party-intervenor status at about 4:50 p.m. Thursday. The Planning Board meeting started at 6 p.m. Bayer said he didn’t want to further delay the process, but that they would raise the issue when it came before the City Commission as they believe they have sufficient evidence to support a party-intervenor status. “My clients are the doughnut that surround the hole,” Bayer said. “They’re the hole that’s trying to come in now and affect substantially our neighborhood.” If the developers are given an R-2 zoning, they can then “paint the canvas however they want,” Bayer said. A site plan review is all they would need to develop the property, and that’s a technical process. “As your staff has pointed out, if that canvas is painted under a PRD designation, then you’re going to help pick the colors, you can help pick the confines,” Bayer said. “We go through the same process that was there before.” Tomoka Oaks resident Carolyn Davis said that the property isn’t in “limbo,” as the attorney argued. The developers can bring back a development order under a PRD zoning to be considered by the commission.

“Nowhere does the now-expired development order state the land use will revert to R-2,” Davis said, citing the city’s 2006 PRD development order. That order was for a maximum of 119 units, and the 2006 developer was represented by Rob Merrell, who is also part of the legal team representing the current developers. If the Planning Board members inquire about an acceptable density, that’s what she would point to. “In fact, Rob Merrell described it as the poster child for smart development,” Davis said. “I could not agree more.” The PRD process was working, Tomoka Oaks resident Michelle Zirkelbach said. What failed is that it didn’t give the developers exactly what they wanted. “I have my daughter’s seventh grade citizenship project,” she said. “On here, what we want: Open land. We want space. What we don’t want: A bunch of junk jammed in a doughnut hole.” BOARD: WE TOLD DEVELOPERS WHAT WE WANTED

Board member Mike Scudiero said that when he buys something, he likes to know what he’s buying. “It sure seems to me like the applicant bought a piece of property with no entitlements, as was said here tonight,” Scudiero said. “It’s like buying a car without an engine — seems like a bad idea to me.” Board member Barry du Moulin said he didn’t understand why the developer insists on building as many homes as possible on the property. He raised concerns about infrastructure and traffic and said the property could instead be developed similar to Broadwater, which has large estate homes. “If you develop these kinds of estates on that property, I think that would be a jewel for the developer,” du Moulin said. If something is to be developed on the former golf course property, board member Al Jorczak said it should be “above and beyond” anything ever done in Ormond Beach. “We should be moving toward excellence and not just whatever the common practices are, even in other communities,” Jorczak said. “It’s a special community and it’s a special spot.” Maybe, it requires a special zoning district too, he added. The developers and their attorneys kept telling the board at previous hearings that the board needed to tell them what they wanted for Tomoka Reserve, board member Angeline Schull said. “We did,” she said. “We told you less density and you weren’t willing — we had the slightest change of like three or four homes, so it’s very frustrating for you to come back now and say, ‘Oh, well now we want R-2 so we can put more homes in there.’” Thomas said that when the developers bought the property in 2021, it was zoned PRD. In his opinion, it should remain zoned as such. “Three times we have told them what we want, and three times they have just walked away and said, ‘The heck with that, we’re not doing that,’” Thomas said. “So here we are, and it’s going to be ... a unanimous decision.”

Hunter’s Ridge conflict: A $91,000 records request and an ongoing easement dispute A conflict resolution between all parties is scheduled for Feb. 6. JARLEENE ALMENAS MANAGING EDITOR

When the attorneys representing Hunter’s Ridge approached the city of Ormond Beach with a public records request — filed about a month before the city filed a lawsuit against the developer and Flagler County — the attorneys were informed that the records they sought would cost over $91,000 to produce. Attorney Philip Crawford, who represents Hunter’s Ridge developer U.S. Capital Alliance, said he’s never seen such a high sum for a public records request. “We’re not looking for hard copy documents,” Crawford said. “We’re just looking for someone to do an electronic word search of the information requested and send it to us electronically.” Ormond Beach filed a lawsuit against U.S. Capital Alliance and Flagler County on Oct. 27, 2023, after finding the developer in noncompliance with the 1991 Hunter’s Ridge Development of Regional Impact because the developer hasn’t granted almost 300 acres of conservation lands to the city and because it issued Flagler County a 60-foot wide road easement for a logging road known as the 40 Grade. The city also claims that the developer failed to prepare a hydroperiod restoration plan for the conservation lands, though the developer argues this was done as dictated in the DRI. On Nov. 21, 2023, Flagler County invoked the Governmental Dispute Resolution Act, requiring a conflict assessment meeting — or mediation — between the governing bodies, alongside the National Audubon Society and the St. Johns River Water Management District. The county attempted to schedule the meeting

as early as Dec. 15, but, Flagler County Attorney Al Hadeed said, Ormond Beach kept putting off the meeting. Hadeed said all parties finally landed on a mediation date of Feb. 6. The 18-paragraph records request filed on Sept. 29 and answered on Nov. 15 sought email correspondence and documents between city attorneys and non-city employees regarding the Hunter’s Ridge development, the installation of water wells on lands controlled by either Flagler County or the developer and a conservation parcel located within Hunter’s Ridge. “It is my understanding that the public records request was voluminous,” City Attorney Randy Hayes said in a statement to the Observer. “It was handled by the city clerk’s office in accordance with established policy.” An email from the city clerk’s office to Crawford on Nov. 17, 2023, stated that there were over 160,000 emails and files found in the preliminary search results for their request, amounting to 2,615 hours of research time needed. Crawford challenged this, saying that the $91,190.27 estimate for the records was equal to an employee working on the request for eight hours a day, five days a week, for 15 months straight. “I mean, no one can imagine that someone is going to be working for 15 months straight ... to answer our 18 questions,” he said. “It’s just nuts.” WAS A LAWSUIT NECESSARY?

Jake Beren, chief operating officer of Hunters Ridge Acquisition and Development LLC, said he wants the issue with Ormond Beach and Flagler County resolved. Because Hunter’s Ridge was found in noncompliance last fall, the city threatened to withhold utilities for new homes in Hunter’s Ridge until the violations are addressed. But, Beren said they received utility permits for one of the new Flagler subdivisions last week. Beren said the conservation parcel hadn’t been granted to the city yet because he and his team were wait-

ing on mitigation credits. “We have conservation easements in, we have our surveys in — we’re just waiting for [SJRWMD] to sign off on it, and then that’s it,” Beren said. “The district can have it and the city can have it. ... Was it necessary to hold a public hearing and put us in noncompliance for this? Over what? Two months?” Beren said he also doesn’t understand why the city filed suit against Flagler County for the 40 Grade easement. Flagler County sought an easement in 2017 so it could access 2,000 acres of Flagler County conservation land for management work and to fight illegal incursions, Hadeed told the County Commission last December. Hadeed told the Observer that the 40 Grade roadway was previously in place from when a logging company owned what is now the county’s conservation land. The easement request, Hadeed said, was Flagler County acting as a “good steward.” The 40 Grade, spanning one-third of a mile, granted Flagler unpaved access into the conservation land. The DRI process of requesting the easement, Hadeed said, requires public notices sent to the general public and all parties involved. Including Ormond Beach, he said. “We gave the city formal notice,” Hadeed said, referencing the 2017 process. And no one, he said, objected during the process. Flagler County did place shell on areas of the 40 Grade where the road needed structural support. Shell, he said, is a common material used in conservation areas. Hayes previously told the Observer that the easement granted to Flagler County could allow it to build a public road through the conservation lands in the future. “Which means that as Flagler County develops out portions north of Ormond Beach, that all of those residents would have direct access to State Road 40,” Hayes said in an October 2023 interview “... So that’s why it’s critically important, I think,

that people understand what’s at stake here.” Crawford said Flagler County attorney Sean Moylan swore under oath that a road would not be constructed in those lands. “And he correctly pointed out that if they ever changed their mind and somehow wanted to put a road, who do they have to go to for approval?” Crawford said. “They have to go to the municipality on which the road would be built, and that’s Ormond Beach.” Crawford and Beren suspect the city’s attention on the conservation parcels and 40 Grade easement has to do with the city’s interest in building wells. A $20 million well project was included in the city’s recently Capital Improvement Plan, slated to be budgeted in the 2027-2028 fiscal year. But, Crawford said that the conservation parcel cannot be tapped for wells. “We think there’s some ulterior motive that we can’t figure out exactly or find the paperwork to back up,” Crawford said. “... My client has wanted to work with Ormond, continues to offer to work with Ormond and they just keep getting their hand slapped away.” Hayes said the city has no plans to build wells in the conservation land. In a Dec. 18, 2023, email to an attorney with SJRWD, Hayes clarified that the city’s 200-page CIP is a planning document and that it originally included a topographic map showing a tentative location for the city’s West Ormond Raw Water Wellfield. “The conservation lands are not specifically identified on the map,” Hayes wrote. “The text/comment box on the map appears to generalize a tentative location in the vicinity of the conservation lands. A portion of the conservation lands abut the western edge of land owned by the city for use as a water plant facility. The location maps have been modified to eliminate any confusion regarding the possible location of future wells.” Any future wells, Hayes added,

would need to be reviewed and approved by SJRWMD. DRAWN INTO A DISPUTE

All three parties — U.S. Capital Alliance, Flagler County and the city of Ormond Beach — were supposed to meet later this month for mediation. Hayes said that the conflict resolution meeting was difficult to coordinate due to the holidays. “The primary issue is Flagler County’s unlawful exercise of power extraterritorially,” he said. The city of Ormond Beach has also amended its lawsuit. No substantial changes were made, according to Crawford, but it slows the legal proceedings. For Flagler County, the amended complaint outlines several areas where Ormond Beach says the county violated state statute by entering into the easement agreement and by taking actions like placing shell material on the 40 Grade without the city’s consent. Flagler, Hadeed said, has been drawn into a dispute between Ormond Beach and the developer that doesn’t involve the county. He said the lawsuit was a waste of taxpayer dollars for both municipalities. “Whatever issues they have with the developer, we have nothing to do with it,” Hadeed said. “We were brought into the suit. We’re a stranger to their controversy.” Beren said he has no interest in fighting with the city. “If the city called me up today and said, ‘Hey, let’s just put this all behind us. We need you to do X,Y and Z’ — meaning there’s an actual thing I can do ... I’ll get it started today,” Beren said. “But when you take it out of my power and say I need to force Flagler County to give up access (of the 40 Grade), I can’t force Flagler County to do it.” If mediation can be skipped, he said he’s all for it as well. “If they’re ready to just put this behind them, make it go away and make everything nice and friendly, let’s do that,” Beren said. “I don’t need to ‘win.’ I just need it to go away.”

davit provided by Belvedere to see if it complied with the statutory requirements of a public notice and that one of the FDEP representatives said it was his first time reviewing an air permit for a fuel terminal. “We now realize that we are working with a company who just wants to proceed with this project, regardless of the consequences on our community, to our quality of life, our safety, our health, just overall well-being,” Krafft said. “We are obviously very, very motivated to continue the fight.” Residents, she added, are even more motivated in ensuring the county passes a moratorium on heavy industrial development at the upcoming Feb. 6 meeting. “There is a dire, dire need to modernize the heavy industrial district in Volusia County, and this was really just the trigger point for that,” Krafft

said. “It’s not about Belvedere. It’s about the way that the current heavy industrial zoning is in place that does not take into account the growth that happened over the years and all of the various residential neighborhoods nearby.” On Jan. 10, Mayor Bill Partington sent a letter of support for the moratorium to the Volusia County Council. “The push for a moratorium is not about halting one project but about taking a necessary pause to reassess and modernize the zoning and development plans,” Partington wrote. “This reevaluation is crucial to ensure that our growth aligns with the current and future needs of the county and Ormond Beach.” In the letter, Partington recognized Krafft and other residents who have been advocating both against the fuel farm and the moratorium for heavy industrial developments.

“It’s crucial that their concerns are not only heard but acted upon,” Partington wrote. “This development moratorium represents a tangible response to these community voices, demonstrating that local governance is attentive and responsive to the needs and aspirations of its citizens.” Krafft said that when she and others found out about the fuel terminal in August 2023, she didn’t think it would become as large of an issue as it is today. “I did not think it was going to become such a complex fight and that we were going to have to fight different wars on different fronts, some with our very own county elected officials, some with our state representatives ... and then of course, the third battle is with Belvedere,” Krafft said.

Last September, Ormond Beach company S.R. Perrott filed a petition to challenge an air pollution construction permit issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Belvedere Terminals for a fuel farm proposed behind the company’s headquarters. A judge listened to witnesses and testimony from both S.R. Perrott and Belvedere during an administrative hearing held on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The judge, Edward Early, is expected to issue a ruling in February. The amended petition filed by the local food and beverage distribution company stated that Belvedere failed to provide adequate public notice for the permit, citing that, though S.R. Perrott’s headquarters are located across the railroad tracks from the property at 874 Hull Road — where Belvedere plans to construct its fuel terminal — the company’s executive vice president, Gary Connors, only learned about the permit while a getting a haircut at a local barbershop on Aug. 2, 2023, the day after the permit was issued. Connors said he then called Tad Durrance, president of Halifax Paving, which is based out of 860 Hull Road. Durrance told him he would look into the issue and later sent Connor’s daughter Eva Connors McMullin some information about the permit via email. S.R. Perrott is arguing that Belvedere’s public notice for the permit, advertised in the Hometown News, was insufficient and failed to comply with statutory requirements. The company also argues that the “permit and its safeguards do not fully consider and mitigate the proposed project’s full potential to emit pollutants.” Both S.R. Perrott and Belvedere Terminals declined to comment due to the ongoing appeal. At the hearing, Belvedere’s attorneys were tasked with providing that the public notice in the Hometown News was indeed adequate. Other witnesses called to testify included Martin Costello, David Read, Jeff Koermer, all with FDEP, and Kirk Dougal, group publisher of the Hometown News. Koermer said FDEP doesn’t normally receive comments specific to an air permit on projects. “Generally, when we issue an air construction permit for a minor source like this, it’s independent of land use or anything,” Koermer said. “In other words, that permit could be good in any county, in any municipality.” Ormond Beach resident Elena Krafft was among those who tuned in for the hearing, conducted via Zoom. The city of Ormond Beach livestreamed the hearing at City Hall as well. Krafft said she felt hopeful at the end of the hearing. “I felt like the judge was really interested in this case,” she said. “He actually acknowledged that this was a new case to him, so he was interested. He gave a lot of interest to both parties and wanted to hear what they had to say.” She added that she thought S.R. Perrott made a strong case in showing that the FDEP didn’t take into account the surrounding neighborhoods, nor the company’s operations, when issuing the permit. She said she was surprised to learn that FDEP didn’t double-check the affi-

U-HAULED AWAY 11 p.m. — 6100 block of State Road 100, Palm Coast Grand theft. The Sheriff’s Office recovered a stolen U-Haul truck that had been missing from the Miami area for a month. Inside the vehicle were a man and a woman, who claimed the woman’s daughter-in-law had rented the truck for them, according to an arrest report. Two deputies placed the suspects in custody and, while searching the vehicle, found a baggie of 2.25 grams of synthetic cathinones in the woman’s purse and a $10 dollar bill with more cathinones on it, weighing 1.07 grams.

Both suspects were charged with grand theft and possession of cathinones and taken to the county jail.

A SIBLING RESEMBLANCE 9:41 a.m. — 500 block of Southwest Palm Coast Parkway, Palm Coast False name. A Palm Coast woman attempted to pass off as her sister in order to get out of trouble for driving with a suspended license. A Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a Chevrolet Malibu in a parking lot after the vehicle’s tags came up as registered to a woman with a suspended license, according to an arrest report. Before the deputy could finish introducing himself, the woman driving the car asked, “Is this about my sister’s registration?” The woman then told the deputy that she is the sister of the car owner and she was using the car to go to work at one of the businesses in the parking lot. After looking at the woman’s driver’s license, the deputy noted the woman looked like the one with a suspended license and not the sister. After confirming with the woman’s work that this was the car owner and not the sister she was claiming to be, the woman admitted to being herself and was placed under arrest.

READ THE SIGNS 5:26 p.m. — 200 block of Williamson Boulevard, Ormond Beach Loitering/prowling. Police arrested a 29-year-old man who was spotted loitering by a local closed movie theater building despite numerous “No Trespassing” signs in place. According to an arrest report, police were patrolling the area as the building had recently been vandalized. Equipment and building fixtures were broken, and someone had painted graffiti on numerous surfaces. As the reporting officer was driving near the building, he spotted the man, who looked at him before running into a wooded area between the building an a local plaza. The reporting officer approached the wooded area and upon seeing the man, yelled at him to come out.

The man, who is homeless, complied. He told the officer he ran from him because he didn’t like to talk to police or people in general, the report states. He told police he thought the “No Trespassing” signs only applied to the building, and not its surroundings. He was taken to jail.

Ormond Hotel model donated to Ormond Beach Historical Society The model, built in 1995 by Dr. Wayne Lowell, went through an extensive and meticulous four-month restoration project by local hobbyist and model builder Mark Bigelow. RANDY JAYE CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Ormond Beach’s most iconic landmark, the Ormond Hotel, was built in 1887 by John Anderson and Joseph Price and opened for business on Jan. 1, 1888. It was located at 15 E. Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach. The wellknown industrialist Henry Flagler purchased the hotel in 1890 and over the following 15 years expanded and improved it into a world class resort. Flagler added three new wings, elevators, a saltwater pool, and constructed a railroad bridge that allowed guests the convenience of disembarking and boarding passenger trains near the entrance of the hotel. By the early 1900s, it was one of the largest wooden structures in the United States and featured 11 miles of corridors and breezeways and included 400 hotel rooms. The hotel’s property once occupied 80 acres, which ran from the Halifax River to the Atlantic Ocean. During the hotel’s heyday many affluent

and famous people including John D. Rockefeller Sr. were frequent guests. In the 1950s, the hotel was converted into a retirement home. On Nov. 24, 1980, the Ormond Hotel was added onto the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural and engineering significance. In the mid-1980s, the city of Ormond Beach ordered the structure to be evacuated as it was deemed hazardous. Over the next several years, multiple attempts to save and restore the

historic structure failed and it eventually met the wrecking ball in 1992. A small piece of the original hotel, its cupola, was saved from demolition and is now housed in Ormond Beach’s Fortunato Park. Along with the memories of many people there are numerous newspaper and magazine articles, brochures, pictures and postcards that exist which keep the once marvelous Ormond Hotel alive in local folklore. In 1995, Dr. Wayne Lowell built an impressive small scale model of

the Ormond Hotel. The model was later refurbished by Don Bostrom. It was housed and displayed in a local Lohman funeral home for many years. It was then moved to the Ormond Heritage Condominiums (which were built on the former site of the Ormond Hotel, and supposedly designed to look like the historic structure). In 2023, after being housed and displayed at the Ormond Heritage Condominiums for several years, the model was donated to the Ormond

Beach Historical Society, and moved to the MacDonald House in Ormond Beach. The model was showing its age, now approaching 30 years old, and was suffering from paint loss, and had many missing pieces and broken parts. The model went through an extensive and meticulous fourmonth restoration project by local hobbyist and model builder Mark Bigelow. The restoration project included the repainting of most of the model, repairing multiple broken pieces including all of the delicate hand railings, recreating and matching some missing sections of the buildings, and identifying various missing parts and purchasing replacements from several online sources. Some of the missing parts were very hard to find as they are no longer being manufactured, and Bigelow spent quite a bit of time searching for them. Bigelow also built a children’s playground, which added a nice refreshing feature to the model. The impressive and recently restored Ormond Hotel model is now on display at the MacDonald House, 38 E. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, which is open to the public free of charge on Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you never saw the Ormond Hotel in person, this model will surely give you an idea of how marvelous the one-of-a-kind historic landmark really was.

BRIEFS Two killed, one critically injured in hit-and-run in Palm Coast Two pedestrians from Palm Coast were killed just after midnight, early on Jan. 14, when a pickup truck, also driven by a Palm Coast resident, struck them near the intersection of U.S. 1 and State Road 100. Charges are pending. A third pedestrian, who is a 48-year-old Bunnell man, was also struck in the crash and is in critical condition at the hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The incident occurred as a 51-year-old Palm Coast man was driving a pickup truck north on U.S. 1. Three pedestrians were walking across U.S. 1: a 50-year-old Palm Coast woman, a 59-year-old Palm Coast woman, and the 48-year-old Bunnell man. The pickup hit the three pedestrians and kept driving, before being located up the road, at the Terranova’s Pizzeria parking lot. The two Palm Coast pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP reported.

Volusia County Beach Safety named Beach Patrol of the Year Volusia County Beach Safety has been named the 2023 Beach Patrol of the Year by the Florida Beach Patrol Chiefs Association. The recognition underscores the agency’s exceptional efforts and dedication throughout the year. In the 2023 season, Volusia County Beach Safety performed 2,512 water rescues and 35,811 preventive actions, responding to 1,162 medical emergencies, and addressing

41,272 calls for service. The association acknowledged the agency’s achievements in competitions as well. Volusia County Beach Safety’s competition team secured third place overall in the USLA Southeast Regional Lifeguard Competition in Delray Beach and eighth place overall in the USLA National Lifeguard Championships in Virginia Beach. Volusia County Beach Safety also showcased a strong presence at the International Surf Rescue Challenge on South Padre Island, Texas. Notably, two of the eight female competitors representing the United States in the open division team began their careers with Volusia County Beach Safety. Additionally, three of the eight under 19 team competitors currently work for Volusia County Beach Safety. The open team secured a third place overall, while the under 19 team clinched the secondplace overall position.

Palm Coast Yacht Club announces 2024 Holiday Boat Parade The 2024 Palm Coast Holiday Boat Parade will be held on Dec. 14, a Saturday. Parade Chair Sarah Ulis announced the date in a press release on Jan. 12. The annual parade is sponsored by the Palm Coast Yacht Club and the 2023 event had 108 official registrants, the press release said, and at least 50 non-registered boats joined in. The Dec. 14 date is optimal for high tides on the Intracoastal Waterway and is just one day before the full moon, the press release said. CRIME REPORT Man stole cash register from Palm Coast Walmart: FCSO

19-year-old Palm Coast man indicted on wire fraud charges

The man who stole a cash register from the Cypress Point Parkway Walmart in December has been arrested. On Dec. 10, the FCSO posted a photo of an unidentified man wearing a red shirt who was seen stealing a cash register from the store, a FCSO press release said. On Jan. 12, the FCSO announced that man has been identified as John Michael Wakefield, 43, of Wellington, Florida, near Palm Beach in South Florida. Wakefield is a convicted felon who was released from prison in 2021 after serving 10 years for armed robbery, the press release said. In connection to the cash register theft, Wakefield has been charged with unarmed burglary of an occupied structure and grand theft. The drawer was estimated to hold $3,500, according to the original incident report. FCSO investigators were able to identify Wakefield as a suspect through facial recognition. During the investigation, FCSO’s Major Case Unit and Real Time Crime Center tracked Wakefield to North Carolina and later back south to the Orlando area, the press release said. When an exact location was determined, a Florida Highway Patrol unit apprehended Wakefield on the Florida Turnpike’s Lake Service Plaza in Ocoee without incident, the press release said. The Orange County Corrections Facility is holding Wakefield on local charges and he will later be transferred to the Flagler County jail, where he will be held on a $60,000 bond.

A Palm Coast man has been indicted on several wire fraud charges and could face up to 20 years in federal prison for each charge if convicted. Noah Michael Urban, 19, has been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, eight counts of wire fraud, and five counts of aggravated identity theft, according to a press release from the Middle District of Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office. According to the indictment, Urban allegedly stole at least $800,000 from at least five different victims between the months of August 2022 and March 2023. If convicted, Urban faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each wire fraud charge, which is a federal crime, the press release said. Additionally, the aggravated identity theft charges each have a mandatory minimum sentencing of two years that will run consecutive to any other prison sentence. Urban is known under several aliases, including “Sosa,” “Elijah,” “King Bob,” and “Anthony Ramirez,” the press release said. The case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Justice Department’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, the United States Attorney’s Office District of Oregon, and the United States Attorney’s Office Middle District of Florida, the press release said. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Cannizzaro is prosecuting the case.

Investigating possible suicide in Palm Coast’s L Section The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible suicide that occurred on Lewis Drive in Palm Coast. The FCSO first announced on its Facebook page around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 12 that deputies were investigation a death on Lewis Drive and asked residents to stay clear of the area. Just before noon, the FCSO updated the post to say the death appeared to be a suicide but is still under investigation pending an autopsy.

Daytona dancer arrested for DUI in Flagler by Sheriff Rick Staly Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly was returning from a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at 3 p.m. Jan. 15, when he observed a black Chevrolet approaching the entrance of Andalusia Trail at State Road 100 West with heavy passenger side damage. When approached by Staly, the driver could not produce a driver’s license but identified herself as Krystal Miller, 35, of Daytona Beach. She told Staly and other deputies that she was a dancer at a strip club in Daytona and had been at a bachelor party with “some other girls” in Interlachen (Putnam County) all night and was on her way home. She said she was just tired and had run off the roadway. Miller was carrying a black handbag which she opened in plain view, and the deputies saw a glass pipe and a plastic bag containing a partially crushed pill. She also had a “baggie of cocaine.” Miller was arrested on multiple charges and was held on $18,500 bond.

After seven years, Donnie’s Donuts has bid Ormond’s beachside goodbye. It was an emotional decision, said Donald and Patti Summerlin, the doughnut shop’s owners. But one they were forced to make due to the rising cost of business insurance and the financial impact the 2022 hurricane season had on their business. “We hate leaving that location,” Donald Summerlin said. “It’s not something we want to do.” The Summerlins announced the closure on Jan. 10 on the

tinue to improve, the Summerlins wish their former beachside business neighbors success. “[The beach] is beautiful,” Donald Summerlin said. “It’s gorgeous. The beaches are small, there’s not as much, but it’s the same beach.” And all businesses need to work together to get tourists back, the couple added. But they needed to make the best decision for their mom-andpop doughnut shop, and that was consolidating operations. “It’s a very tough decision to make, but at the same time, we feel very positive about our shop in Daytona at the One Daytona complex,” Patti Summerlin said. “With Costco coming, we have seen growth in that plaza since that shop opened.” The Summerlins opened the Donnie’s Donuts location at One Daytona in 2021. The store is open Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Volusia County is keeping an eye on a recently filed Florida Senate Bill that would require “local governments to seek to minimize or eliminate the potential negative impacts of a local government action” regarding specific sectors of

the economy: farming, energy, fuel production and supply chain points of connection, such as ports, railways and rail stations. “Obviously, the intent of this bill is to limit local government authority,” Volusia County Attorney Mike Dyer said at the Jan. 16 County Council meeting. “I know

oftentimes, we use the phrase ‘preemption.’ It’s a form of preemption because it’s regulating a subject that is currently not regulated in this way.” SB 1628 was filed by Republican Sen. Jay Collins on Jan. 5. The bill, if passed, would create a new “impact review” process where local government actions would be examined by the Florida Department of Agriculture or the Florida Department of Transportation at an “affect-

ed entity’s” written request, made within 15 days after the enactment or adoption of resolutions, ordinances, zoning or land use changes. “If the department determines in the impact review that the local government failed to minimize or eliminate the negative impacts to the identified sector, the department may recommend in the impact review changes to the local government action which may minimize or eliminate the negative impacts,”

The city of Ormond Beach and its Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee commemorated MLK Day with its annual breakfast celebration on Monday, Jan. 15. The breakfast, held in a “dine and dash” carry-out format, provided participants with grits, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and a biscuit, served at the Joe and Elwillie Daniels South Ormond Neighborhood Center at 176 Division. Ave. The city has celebrated MLK Day

with a breakfast event for over three decades. Breakfast deliveries were also made to those who couldn’t attend the celebration in person. MLK Committee Chairperson Tina Carlyle hopes next year’s celebration can return to its pre-COVID-19 format, which featured speakers and dance performances. In addition to Carlyle, this year’s MLK Committee was composed of Belinda Davis, Bobbie George, Veronica Jones and Pastor George Ward.

New year, new me (the pottery extraordinaire) Determined to grow as a person in 2024, Observer columnist Mike Cavaliere ventures to learn a new skill that — get this — doesn’t involve a computer screen.

I have a very particular set of skills. Avoiding clothes shopping for full decades, for instance — I excel at that. I also do an OK Joe Pesci impersonation. When it comes to physical feats, though, I’m far less accomplished. During a commercial for that show where couples compete to circumnavigate the globe, my wife, Rebecca, gasped, her eyes sparkling with hope, and said, “Oh, I want to do an Amazing Race!” I wiped a drip of ice cream off my jowls and belched. “I want to do an Amazing Rest.” But don’t let my aversion to exercise fool you. I’m actually huge on personal growth, as long as it doesn’t involve sweating. One of

my favorite pastimes, in fact, is to broodingly ruminate about my future. What do I want? Where am I going? Will I have enough time to get there? You know the routine. Midlife is a time of unrelenting reassessment. After all, it’s around the midpoint in any race, I’m told, when you finally slow down enough to take a look around. You start wondering if it’s too late to double back and find a better path. You think, Am I giving it my all? For the first time, you’re tired. You notice new body aches and, even more alarming, notice yourself noticing the birds along the way, and with newfound admiration. You think a lot about protein and water consumption, and then it hits you — the suddenly very real possibility that the path you’re treading will, one day, disappear under your feet, leaving you lost in midair a moment, like Wile E. Coyote, with just enough time before falling to look remorsefully at the audience, all those faces you left behind or never got a chance to know.

So — basically — that’s why I took a pottery class. “Aprons over there,” our instructor, Heather, nodded toward the back. Then she sat at the wheel and explained her actions — how she centered the clay, formed a well in its middle, spun, molded — and I was shocked at how quickly her brick of mud transformed, as if by magic, into a bowl textured by the grooves of her fingerprints. “You make it look easy,” I said, not unlike a kid marveling at home run hitters, assuming they must be superhuman. She smirked. “Lots of practice.” Then she set us loose, guiding our actions as we went. To my surprise, there’s nothing dainty about working with clay. To start, you slam your brick onto the wheel — really make it thud — or else it won’t stay in place once you kick on the pedal to start spinning. Molding isn’t delicate, either, at least not at first. You really manhandle the clay, push and squeeze and stretch it, let its silver slick your palms and slide beneath your fingernails. The streaks near your knuckles look like real work. You begin to like that. Then, to balance your brick’s center of gravity, Heather tells you to hold a hand firm, like a fierce

karate chop, on top of the spinning clay, muscling it into submission. Oh yes, you like this very much. You dive your fingers deep into the middle of the mud, then pull a side toward you. The spinning wheel puts everything in fast motion, and you watch as the pressure from your fingers stretches your well open wide like a blooming flower. In that moment, you feel the hunk in your hands transform from a blob into a bowl, as if all it had been waiting for to evolve was your guiding hand. This, right here, is the magic part: when nothing turns into something. You did that. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere about how we mold our lives, about each year being an unformed mass of potential, an invitation to get our hands dirty. But metaphors — those are the dainty and delicate things. I made a bowl, hearty as Earth and hardened by fire. It doesn’t exist on the page or in my head but in my cupboard, where it has a job, a purpose. I’ll even eat out of it — probably ice cream — definitely while I’m resting. And it will be amazing. YOUR TOWN The Ormond Beach Elks Lodge presented the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties with a $2,000 donation on Jan. 3. The donation is meant to support the Jewish Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank, according to a statement to the Observer. The Elks also donated food and toys during the recent holidays.

The Lukic Family, of Chicago, were selected as Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s featured family from the museum’s Jan. 5 Free Family Art Night event. The family learned about the event while visiting relatives in Ormond Beach, said Kaara Lukic in a statement to the museum. They knew they would enjoy it. “Back home in Chicago, we love going with our five year old to the cultural events offered at our parks, libraries, and museums,” she said. “It is a wonderful way to learn, bond with family, and be in community with others.” Her daughter’s grandmother, who is an Ormond Beach resident, also hadn’t been to the museum yet, Lukic said. “What a great way to learn about this great place and spend time together,” she said. “We all felt welcomed and right at home. ORMOND BEACH LEI-DEES’ GROUP DONATES TO CHRISTINE’S BLANKETS The Ormond Beach Lei-dees’ Group for 50+ recently donated 55 blankets and $68 to Christine Blankets. Held during their monthly Bunco game night, the group hosted Mary Yochum, from Christine’s Blankets, for a talk about the services the organization offers to homeless individuals and shelters in the community. Christine’s Blankets was founded with the purpose of providing a

sense of comfort to homeless individuals along with “a reminder they are loved, even if from a distance,” according to a press release. More than 2,000 blankets are collected and distributed annually. Throughout the year, the organization also distributes “care bags,” which include various essentials, all packaged in drawstring backpacks. Donations are always needed: travel-size toiletries, knit hats, gloves,

sweatshirts, caps, socks, flip flops, water, sunscreen and more. Looking for some fun? Attend Christine’s Blankets Game Day on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 1-4 p.m. at Tomoka United Methodist Church. The Republican Conservative Ormond Beach Assembly presented Congressman Cory Mills with a proclamation on Saturday, Jan. 6. According to a statement to the Observer, the proclamation declared him a hero for rescuing U.S. citizens who were trapped in Israel during the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war. Mills has represented Florida’s 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2023.

The Lions held their annual Breakfast with Santa at Alfies Restaurant on Dec. 2, where Santa and Mrs. Claus welcomed families and seniors for photos. Children received gifts from Santa. Jim the Balloon Man and an appearance by a Volusia County fire truck added to the fun. On Dec. 4, the Community Holiday Party took place at Alfies Restaurant. A prime rib dinner was served to over 100 attendees and Santa brought homemade seashell ornaments. The Lions enjoyed entertainment by Sandy and Jack Cook, from the Halifax Repertory Theatre, who sang holiday favorites. Donations were presented to the Florida Lions Foundation for the Blind, Florida Lions Diabetes Awareness Foundation, Multiple District 35 Retina Foundation and the Volusia County Volunteer Firefighters. Past International Director Neil Spencer presented the Model Club Plaque to President Lion Kathleen Trutschel and the club surprised Lion Bobbie Cheh with a lifetime membership. On Dec. 9, five members of the club assisted volunteers at Christine’s Blankets to help giftwrap 720 blankets to be given out to homeless individuals in four counties for Christmas. On Dec. 10, Cheh delivered the District 35-0 pediatric cancer check for $115 from the Lions’ pumpkin fundraiser and a check for $100 from the Lions to Bill Fletcher’s fundraiser for pediatric cancer. On Dec. 14, Lions Mary Yochum and Maureen Hamilton played Santa, along with Ormond-by-theSea Eagles, delivering over 150 toys collected from the Community to Beachside Elementary School. Numerous Lions rang the bell for the Salvation Army in front of Publix in the Ormond Mall on four different days, each member taking a twohour shift. Finally for the first service activity for 2024, on New Year’s Day, five members of the Lions Club helped prepare and wrap 200 dinners at Hope Place, a local homeless shelters for families.

rt lovers, history buffs and people that just like to hang out celebrated 34 years of art and culture in Ormond Beach at the Starry, Starry Night gallery walk on Friday, Jan. 12. Attendees strolled through Ormond Beach’s “culture corner” — The Casements, the MacDonald House and the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens — and had the option to take a peek inside the Hotel Ormond Cupola located at Fortunato Park. Dr. Philip Shapiro, OMAM board secretary, said they had over 310 visitors by 7:30 p.m. He said the event was about community awareness from a cultural standpoint. “I’ve lived in Ormond beach since 1981 and I must say we have expanded tremendously with cultural enhancement and heritage in the community,” he said. “What we have here is Museum Row. It goes from the art museum, the MacDonald House, The Casements and the Cupola. It’s a unique district in the community.” Founder of the Ormond Beach Historical Society, Alice Louise Olmsted Burt, known as Lupe to her friends, was instrumental in saving many of Ormond’s historic landmarks before she died in 2023. Shapiro said The Casements was saved, in large part, by Burt’s initiative. It is considered to be the city’s cultural center. Members of the Beaux Arts of Central Florida featured their work in the “Reflections of Starry, Starry Night” exhibit at The Casements during the event. Guests enjoyed finger foods, and music by Paul Ricci and Glenn Lowry, who played saxophone and piano, respectively. This is Lowry’s first year performing at the Starry, Starry Night event. Originally from Canada, he has lived in Ormond for six years and recently acquired his American citizenship. “I love it here,” he said. “Especially this area. I bring people here all the time for the tours. I canoe, kayak, sail and walk the beaches. This is my retired life.” Ormond Beach residents Suzanne Engel and Timo Hogan said the event sign on the Granada bridge piqued their interest. “Starry, starry night brought me in,” Hogan said. “I got a thing for Van Gogh. I wanted to grab the advertisement off the bridge — it’s got a Van Gogh look to it.” The artwork for the event poster features “Starry Night Over the Halifax,” created by Sherrill Schoening. Those interested in the history of the area stopped by the MacDonald House to take a look at the recently renovated Hotel Ormond model and the “Women of Ormond Beach: Eileen Hubbard Butts” exhibit.

Pam Woodsome, Ormond Beach Historical Society second vice president, was on-hand to answer questions. She said the gallery walk event is a good way for the Historical Society to generate membership along with the return of the historic bus tours. They currently have approximately 427 members. “Membership is our main revenue source,” she said. “We did increase membership by about 30% in 2023 over the previous year. We want to let everyone know we are now accepting new members.” OMAM hosted the Cultuvue photography exhibition and an opening reception for artist John Wilton, whose modular art panels adorn the walls that lead to the rooftop terrace. Starry, Starry Night guests were treated to the sounds of musician Kyle Bogdan and a view of Ormond. OMAM Executive Director Stephanie Mason-Teague said they have added two new programs for veterans and is eager to generate interest in the community. They are offering a creative workshop, paired with an exhibition tour, which is free to veterans and their families. Quarterly, they will host a lunch and learn. The museum will buy veterans lunch, follow it up with guest speakers who will cover a wide range of topics and then have them complete a project. “We are dedicated to nature in our

The Seabreeze girls kicked off the Five Star Conference soccer tournament with a 6-0 win over the Taylor Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. The Sandcrabs went on to defeat Spruce Creek 3-0 in the conference semifinals to advance to the title game Thursday against Flagler Palm Coast. Seabreeze is 6-6-1 while playing a challenging schedule that has included games against two St. Johns County powers — Bartram Trail (11-41) and Creekside (8-0-2). Seabreeze head coach Eli Freidus said he implemented the same gameplan this year as he did last season. He believes it is beneficial. “If you play against those teams consistently, eventually you have to learn how to play faster and that’s what we’re trying to do — play faster,” he said. “We did it last year and it seemed to help us when we played the local teams. We

were more ready to go. It helps our speed of play and it really helps our defense.” Sandcrabs captain Kylie Watson said the win against Taylor rejuvenated the team morale. She said after playing so many difficult games, it has been hard to get in the mindset of winning but understands the benefits. “It (the difficult schedule) definitely has helped us get better,” she said. “I feel like having an easy schedule wouldn’t do anything for our team. We need to learn to play defense together and play as one. I feel like you can’t do that with an easy schedule. It’s just not worth it.” Watson, Anna Buckmaster, Hannah Howell and Olivia Chase each had an assist with Howell and Chase adding one goal apiece. Adding to the tally were Annabel Thistle with two goals and Glaenzer Kirsten and Charlie Deininger with one each. Chase scored two goals against Creek. Mainland’s boys and girls teams also qualified to play in the Five Star tournament. The boys fell 2-1 in a well-contested battle to DeLand and Flagler Palm Coast ‘mercied’ the Mainland girls 8-0. Dayron Boada had the only goal against DeLand. This is

the junior’s first year playing for Mainland after he recently moved from Cuba. He has been playing for four years but has never played organized soccer. According to Mainland assistant coach Daniel Guastavino, Boada is one of the best players in the aarea right now. “I couldn’t believe it myself,” Guastavino said. “When he first showed up to practice, I was like where does this guy come from.” Boada and his family moved to the United States for a better future. He said he chose Mainland because he has always wanted to play soccer with his cousin who will be an incoming freshman next year. “I feel good about the goal,” Boada said as Guastavino interpreted. “I’m happy about the goal but team comes first and I’m disappointed about the loss.” Mainland boys head coach Danny Peralta has been coaching the varsity team for five years. He has been the school’s resource officer for seven years. He said his team is more cohesive this year because a lot of seniors have been with him for four years. “Coming from a team that doesn’t have a lot of club players that played, positioning and togetherness, it’s unheard of,” he said. “I’ve had street ball talent for years. When you try to put the team together, they don’t bump heads, the style of play bumps heads.” This season, the Buccaneers started 4-0 which he said was ‘unheard of’. They are currently 4-7-2. “Of course, everybody wants that win,” he said. “I’m not focused on the win—I’m focused on the playing.” The Seabreeze girls’ team has won the Five Star two years in a row. Freidus said they will be hard to beat in this tournament if his players stay healthy and play like they have against some of the tougher teams. “The local competition is better than it has been,” he said. “I’m not taking anything for granted. We’ve won this thing two years in a row and the other teams are sick of that. They are ready to beat us. Certainly none of the other teams are intimidated by us.”

Mainland boys improve to 12-4 Mainland’s boys basketball team is looking to return to the Class 5A state championship game this season. The Bucs improved to 12-4 with an 81-51 victory over Spruce Creek on Jan. 12 and an 83-72 win over IMG Academy Blue on Jan. 13. Freshman Kade Manley scored a team-high 27 points against IMG, while sophomore guard Nathan Kirk added 22 and 7-foot senior DeAndre Newland contributed 14 points. Against Creek, 6-foot6 senior Narayan Thomas scored 22 points, Kirk had 21 and Newland had 19. Four players are averaging in double figures for the Bucs led by Kirk, who is averaging 15.4 points per game. Thomas is averaging 13.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.

New Smyrna edged Matanzas in Olympic, 45-44, with Seabreeze compiling 14 points. Seabreeze’s Camila Arellano won at 129 pounds in both competitions with a 220 Olympic total and 235 traditional total. Matanzas also had one double winner in Ryann Parkinson at 101 (125 Olympic, 145 traditional). Matanzas’ other winners included Jessica Krayter (139 Olympic, 185 total); Emily Warren (139 traditional, 230 total); Sarah Sanchez (154 Olympic, 245 total); and Samantha Simon (unlimited traditional, 270 total). New Smyrna 183-pounder Olivia Bond-West had the top totals in the meet with a 380 Olympic and 410 traditional. New Smyrna 199-pounder Asha-Mahri Manzueta lifted the highest bench press of 280 pounds. Bond-West and and Manzueta are both defending state champs. They helped the Barracudas finish second at the Class 2A state meet last year, one point behind Clay (25-24). Matanzas, however, beat New Smyrna in the district meet. The Pirates

will try to win district for the third year in a row on Jan. 25.

FPC wins Olympic competition at home meet

Flagler Palm Coast hosted Bartram Trail, Pedro Menendez and Father Lopez in a girls weightlifting meet on Jan. 10. FPC won the traditional competition (clean and jerk and bench press) with 47 points with Menendez finishing second with 45 points. Bartram Trail won the Olympic competition (snatch and clean and jerk) with 53.5 points with FPC finishing second with 44 points. Bartram Trail did not compete in bench press. FPC had two winners in the Olympic competition: Leila Turner (139 pounds, 285 total) and Zoey Gotera (unlimited, 295 total). The Bulldogs will hold their senior night in a meet against University on Jan. 16. FPC will host the District 4-3A meet on Jan. 24.

Breaking school records was not something Matanzas High School senior Alicia Naticchione anticipated when she joined the girls weightlifting team this shool year. But Naticchione broke three 199-pound school records in a meet with New Smyrna Beach and Seabreeze on the Pirates’ senior night, Wednesday, Jan. 10. In just one season on the team, her name is now etched in the Pirates’ record book. She broke the school bench press record with a 155-pound lift on her third attempt and also broke records for the snatch (100 pounds) and Olympic total (240 in snatch plus clean and jerk). The latter two are both recent additions to high school state weightlifting competitons. Naticchione said she has been lifting weights on her own for four years before deciding to join the team and lift competitively this year. “I saw some of my friends join the team, and I really wanted to do it,” she said. She has improved her bench press by 40 pounds since the beginning of the season when she was benching 115. On senior night, she benched 145 pounds on her first attempt, and it felt easy so she decided to jump 10 pounds. She missed 155 on her second bench press, but hoisted it up on her third and final lift. “It felt amazing,” Naticchione said. “I felt so powerful.” She said she feels most confident in the bench press. Her goal is to bench press 170 pounds in the postseason, which begins on Jan. 25, when the Pirates host the District 6-2A tournament. “Alicia is a member of the band. One of our coaches is her AICE teacher and kept asking her to come out,” Matanzas coach Jeremy Ossler said. “Now she has (three) school records.” Before the season, the Pirates’ 199-pound lifter broke her leg, Ossler said, so Naticchione was able to step into the slot. She is not the only newcomer to be honored on senior night, Ossler said. “Seven of our 12 seniors are firstyear lifters,” he said. “Somehow,
