Someone recently asked me how the Standing O nomination process works. It’s pretty simple: One Standing O picks his or her successor.

There’s no committee, no narrowing of candidates, no final vote. It’s one good person passing the baton to another good person.

The series of stories in the Jan. 6 edition, I hope, encourages people to see the good in each other — and hopefully inspires us all to intentionally do some good today for someone else.

Thanks to all the Standing O’s for making a difference.

PANDEMIC Hospitalized COVID patients increase The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 continued to increase to about 480 in AdventHealth’s hospitals across seven Central Florida Counties, according to a news release from Jan. 3.

AdventHealth states it is prepared for the increase, which so far is lower than that sustained during the Delta surge; The last surge peaked in August with about 1,700 hospitalized patients.

AdventHealth Centra Care’s statewide seven-day rolling positivity rate is now 39%. Physicians recommend people obtain COVID-19 booster shots, wear masks and social distance to stop the spread.

City employees to see increased pay rate soon

Volusia County Schools’ graduation rate is at its “highest ever” after the 20202021 school year, having increased to 91.9%, the district announced Tuesday.

VCS reports the graduation rate has grown over 13% in three years, and surpasses the state average of 90.1% for the first time.

University High School in Deltona reported the largest increase — 10% — in its graduation rate.

Last year, the graduation rate was reported at 87.7%.

A1A crosswalks project in motion The Florida Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 12, at The Casements to discuss safety improvements on A1A from Milsap Road to Granada Boulevard.

According to a press release, the project is meant to improve traffic operations and enhance pedestrian safety. The $3.3 million project, which was initially presented to the community in December 2020, has since been revised to address concerns.

The project plans to add eight new pedestrian crossings, with flashing beacons, along A1A. Three raised landscaped islands have also been proposed.

FDOT is offering three different ways to participate in the meeting. Citizens may attend in person at The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive, anytime between 5:30-7:30 p.m.; listen over the phone by calling 1-866-901-6455 and entering the passcode 958419-867 when prompted; or join a virtual webinar. Graduation rate rises by 4.2%

A shade meeting took place prior to the Ormond Beach City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 4, where commissioners and staff decided to adjust pay rates mid-contract.

In light of unionized city employees calling for higher pay rates to help with recruitment and retainment, Ormond Beach city staff will present unions with a memorandum for consideration to adjust pay rates mid-contract, announced Mayor Bill Partington during the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The announcement was made following a shade meeting (not open to the public) earlier in the day where commissioners and staff discussed the upcoming contract negotiations.

Partington said city staff were working on a pay study to prepare for the negotiations, and that after reviewing the information, the decision to adjust rates mid-contract was reached.

“This more timely adjustment will help in attracting and retaining an efficient and effective workforce that can maintain the high quality of service Ormond Beach prides itself

on providing,” Partington said.

Three representatives from different unions approached the City Commission during meetings held on Sept. 22, Oct. 19 and Nov. 16.

The first was David Randall, vice president of the Ormond Beach Professional Firefighters, who asked for a better pension plan and benefits for firefighters. Ormond Beach Police Officer Robert Pearson was the second, and he also asked for a better pension plan in addition to higher starting pay rates to help fill the department’s vacant positions.

At the time of the Oct. 19 meeting, OBPD had 11 positions open, and was down 22% in sworn personnel.

Ormond Beach city employee Ed Wilson was the last, and as union president of the National Association of General Employees, spoke about the ongoing shortage of workers within the city’s Public Works division due to the low wages offered.

During the commissioner’s final remarks of the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Partington said he wanted city employees to know that the commission appreciates their work.

“We hear you when you talk to us as a commission, and staff as well,” Partington said. “We’re not tone deaf. We understand and hear the exact same conditions that are going on in the economy on a national basis and on a local basis that you do. So mainly, I think that’s the primary driving force for what we did.”

Commissioner Rob Littleton said he was satisfied at the progress made on the issue during the shade meeting.

“For the unions, I hope you look at that very much in detail form and come back to us with what you think,” Littleton said. “I think you’ll like it.”

The city’s pay study is underway.

Redistricting coming soon The City Commission unanimously approved a resolution of intent to adopt its redistricting ordinance, scheduled to be heard at the Feb. 15 and March 1 meetings.

Since 2010, the city’s population has grown by 13%, or 4,941 people to total 43,080. Zone 3 saw the most growth, with 1,810 more people, or 18.86%.

Michael’s Ohana Holiday Toy Drive and Donations surpassed the family’s goal to collect 1,000 toys, and their direct campaign has raised over $1,000. Jennifer Capri, Alberico’s sister, is keeping his legacy alive through fundraisers. HOW ORMOND-BY-THE-SEA LIONS CLUB CELEBRATED DURING DECEMBER What was the Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club up to in December?

On Dec. 4, the Lions partnered with the Division of Blind Services in Daytona Beach to present the Holiday Happening for students and clients, an event with games provided by the Ponce Inlet and South Daytona Lions Clubs. According to a press release, there was a snowball fight area, holiday entertainment by Dance with Me DJ, festive hats made

by Diamond Jim the Balloon Man and a fire truck for the children to have their photos taken in, courtesy of the Daytona Beach Fire Department. Lion Frank White dressed up as Santa and handed out candy canes and stuffed animals.

Then, on Dec. 12, the Lions hosted their Community Holiday Party at

Alfie’s Restaurant, where Santa also made an appearance, as well as the singing Acafellas from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. A total of 62 people were in attendance, and $250 were donated to Volusia County Fire Rescue. Additionally, $500 were donated to the Conklin Davis Center.

SECURITY FIRST TEAM EARNS RECOGNITION Security First Insurance announced in December that its Learning and Development team is among the top 100 winners of the 2022 Training APEX awards by Training Magazine.

The team’s specific ranking will be revealed on Feb. 28, at the 2022 Training Conference and Expo in Orlando. Training Magazine’s APEX Awards rank each company based on the excellence of their employersponsored training and development programs, according to a press release. Security First spent two months completing the application process, which included a 37-page application and required examining the team’s body of work since its inception in 2018.

ROAD RAGE 5:45 p.m. — Intersection of West Granada Boulevard and North Nova Road Assault/battery. A 61-year-old Holly Hill woman was driving in the eastbound right lane of West Granada Boulevard when she noticed that traffic was at a standstill in her lane.

However, traffic was flowing in the left lane, and the woman attempted to switch, according to an incident report. A man in a white pickup truck drove quickly past her, almost hitting her car. It would have been a fleeting scare, but when she reached the light at West Granada Boulevard and North Nova Road, the man got out of his truck and began punching her car’s windows, hood, and bent her passenger-side windshield wiper.

The woman quickly went home and called police, who instructed her to come in the next morning to file a report. If a man is identified, the woman wishes to press charges.

DEC. 19

NAILED IT 2:47 a.m. — 400 block of South Yonge Street Burglary. Police arrested a 41-yearold Ormond Beach man who broke into a salon and stole two bottles of nail polish “because he liked his fingernails to look pretty.”

According to his arrest report, police responded to the business

“However, this accomplishment is even more remarkable because the Learning and Development team earned this rare distinction on their first application, further highlighting the sound design, development, and delivery of Security First’s training programs,” the press release states.

Security First submitted two training programs with its award application — the 120-Day Claims Examiner Trainee Program and the Customer Advocacy Training Program.

The Learning and Development teams are “the unsung heroes,” the press release states, as they enrich the lives of the individuals they train and the companies where they work.

“I have an amazing team deeply

after its alarm went off. Officers discovered the backdoor had been damaged by a cinder block, though no one was found inside at the time.

After contacting the salon’s owner, they were able to view security footage that helped identify the suspect, as officers have had “numerous recent encounters” with him.

The man was found walking on Ridgewood Avenue, and while he initially denied any involvement, later admitted to burglarizing the salon so that he could have a place to sleep and to get nail polish, the report states. The nail polish bottles were found in the pocket of his sweatpants.

Police soon discovered the man had also stolen someone’s cellphone earlier that night. He was taken to jail.

DEC. 28

AXED 11:53 p.m. — First block of West Granada Boulevard Criminal mischief. A 19-year-old Silver Spring man was arrested after he broke several of the city’s water spouts on the pier under the Granada Bridge with an ax.

Police responded to the scene where they encountered eight people on the north side of the bridge, one of whom was carrying a BB gun.

Two of the people were minors.

A witness told police that he saw the man break one of the water spouts with an ax. The man admitted this as well, and confirmed that he had thrown the ax into the river. The damage to the water spouts was estimated to be between $200 and $1,000. The ax was not located.

The man was taken to jail, and all involved were trespassed from all city parks.

Cara O’Keefe offers a bright smile and a helping hand to those in need The lifetime volunteer chooses to live life to its fullest as she helps others MICHELE MEYERS CONTRIBUTING WRITER

C

ara O’Keefe is always smiling.

Fellow volunteers at St. Brendan Catholic Church are constantly wondering what she’s up to and have given her the nickname “Trouble.”

“I heard she was double-trouble from someone else,” said volunteer Bob Callahan as he laughed.

The desire to help people was instilled in O’Keefe at an early age by her mother who volunteered to assist people, anywhere and at anytime. When she was 10 years old, she and her mother went to a local market where her mother told her she needed to stand by the door and open it for everyone entering the store. That stuck with her, and she has been passionate about helping people ever since.

“I love doing things for other people,” O’Keefe said. “You don’t need to give me a certificate of appreciation. I don’t need those things. All I need is a thank you. That’s all.”

ZOOMING WITH ENERGY

After her husband died 17 years ago, she realized she needed something to keep her busy. She started as a secre-

tary for the AARP and became active with St. Brendan Catholic Church.

The 86-year-old currently organizes their funeral receptions, annual craft show and the senior games while volunteering at the food pantry and Family Renew, a safe place where families with children can live while seeking permanent housing. Prior to the pandemic, she helped feed the children on the last Saturday of every month. The tireless volunteer also stays involved with the Council of Catholic Women and their activities.

Her energy seems boundless.

“I think I have always had energy,” O’Keefe said. “I’m one of those people that has to stay busy. If it rains all day, I’m very unhappy because I want to be out doing something.”

She attributes her ability to do 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to taking an abundance of vitamins and a vitamin B12 shot every third week, which she said makes her energy “zoom” afterward. Getting home by 3:30 p.m. for some “me time” also helps her keep up with her busy schedule. That is her time to read, do crossword puzzles, knit or watch some television.

PEANUT BUTTER AND BUCKET LISTS

O’Keefe lives in a pink house in Ormond Beach where she keeps a storage bin on the front porch to collect items for people in need. Periodically, she makes meals for the elderly people who live on her street.

“Cara is the most devoted volunteer I know. She works the St. Brendan Food Pantry, works on planning receptions for funerals, volunteers for Meals on Wheels, works with members of our local Family Renew, has been president and organizes the annual craft show as well as many other actives for the Council of Catholic women and the list goes on and on. ‘No’ is not a part of her vocabulary. We are very fortunate to have Cara a part of our church and our community.”

Her 98-year-old neighbor recently received a crockpot and she has offered to give him cooking lessons.

“I eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast every morning,” she said. “People have started putting jars of peanut butter in my tote box for me. I haven’t bought peanut butter in over a year or two.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered her volunteer to-do list this year. She continues to work for Meals-on-Wheels, but has opted out of ushering at the Peabody, the Daytona Playhouse and the News-Journal Center. However, O’Keefe has no plans of slowing down. In addition to her incessant need to help others, she continues to check off her bucket list. This year, she plans on riding in a fire truck to the church and taking

a semi-truck for a test drive once it is modified for her petite frame. Age is just a number to the volunteer.

“I’m never going to grow up,” she said. “I’ll be sitting on Santa’s lap,

and I’ll say, ‘See you next year.’”

O’Keefe feels one of her favorite Martin Luther King Jr. quotes fits her well: “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”

cean waves crashed against the shoreline as Jenny Zimmet greeted the bootcampers before they jumped into another workout on the beach at Tom Renick Park.

A little over two years ago, Zimmet relaunched her fitness business, SaltyFit, and she hasn’t looked back since.

“We live in such a beautiful place,” she said. “To be able to come together with your friends, get a great workout on the beach, under the sun, with the ocean breeze and the crashing waves, is just amazing.”

Zimmet is a third generation Ormond Beach resident who attended St. Brendan Catholic School, where she met her now-husband, Ron Zimmet. She attended Seabreeze High School her freshman year and later graduated from Father Lopez Catholic High School. With an interest in science, she initially decided to enroll at Florida State University, but then transferred to Clemson University, where she graduated with a degree in nutrition. From there, she became a weight loss consultant for Jenny Craig, followed by a stint as an administrative assistant for the Daytona Beach International Speedway to garner some experience in the marketing field.

For almost 15 years, Zimmet enjoyed a career in sales and marketing for pharmaceutical, medical, hospice and home health care agencies before retiring to spend more time at home with her family in 2019. During her career, fitness

had always played an important role in her life. She was a personal trainer and an aerobic instructor, but always in a secondary capacity. In 2015, she started SaltyFit, but put the fitness venture on hold as her sales territory expanded and her family moved further away from the beach.

As a stay-at-home mom, Zimmet began working out on the beach while her teenage children were at school. During one of her workouts, she was approached by a beachgoer and asked if she did personal training, to which she replied she didn’t, but that she would be starting up a fitness group and asked her to join.

STRONG Nation and SaltyFit Skate on Tuesday and Thursday at Fortunato Park. Every class is taught by Zimmet or one of her hand-picked fitness coaches, and can be customized to any member’s fitness level and abilities.

This year, SaltyFit is also a wellness partner with the Mayor’s Health and Fitness Challenge, which runs from Jan. 8 through April 4. Her classes will be offered at a discount to all of the challenge’s participants.

“We have amazing members and coaches on board,” Zimmet said. “The sense of encouragement, support and empowerment, and community, is really beautiful.

Everyone likes each other, even when we are doing burpees.”

SaltyFit coach Aszur Morgan met Zimmet in 2019 but declined her attempts to entice her to workout. She did not join SaltyFit until November 2020 after she had lost 50 pounds and decided the next step would be to add fitness to her weight-loss journey.

In spring of last year, she became a group fitness coach.

“Jenny saw something in me that I never saw in myself,” Morgan said.

“She asked me to be a coach, and she would tell me that if I coached the class she would take it. I just thought she was crazy and just being nice. She just spoke so much life and motivation and encouragement to me that I’m really thankful for her.”

It’s work that keeps her busy, but Hamm wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Retirement is for people that can travel and do all those things, but there’s more to it than just selfgratification,” she said. “We’ve got to be able to please others, be able to be a blessing to other people, and that’s what I want to do. I want to be a blessing.”

hey say it takes a village to raise a child, but growing up, Deborah Hamm watched her mother do it

all.

On a maid’s salary, roughly $50 a week, Hamm’s mother raised their family of seven children — six girls and one boy — oftentimes singlehandedly. They never went hungry.

Mornings consisted of grits, eggs, bacon and sausage, and they would go to school with clean clothes. They didn’t have the latest and greatest in terms of material things, but Hamm never recalls having to go without anything she needed.

“She was the foundation, and no matter what it was, you treat people the way you want to be treated,” Hamm said. “She taught us that we didn’t have to have everything that was out — the new shoes, if we could have a pair, fine. But if not, to appreciate what we had. You can’t miss what you never had, that was her favorite slogan.”

The words of Psalms 118:24 have always resonated with her: “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Every day, Hamm strives to show kindness in the smallest of ways, which can be a simple hello to a stranger. That doesn’t cost anything, she said.

“And God, he gives seeds to the sower, and if we are sowing — and most people think it’s always a dollar — but if we sow love, we’re going to reap love,” Hamm said. “And he gives us love, so we need to give it back.”

Organizing the food bank’s garage was not the first big project Sheriff has taken on. Over the past few years, she’s tackled seven “hoarder” houses; Some, she helped prepare for estate sales, and others — as was the case of one flooded home in the Tomoka Estates area — she helped the owner empty out. Whatever can be salvaged, Sheriff will take to a local thrift store.

“I hate to see stuff go to the dump that can be used,” Sheriff said.

She’s also no stranger to serving her community.

After working for an insurance company for 12 years, she spent the next three working at the Daytona Pennysaver before she began her own lawn service company. At the time, she lived in The Village community, and noticed that the common lawn areas were not being properly taken care of. Sheriff then took it upon herself to fix the issue.

“I had a little train and I’d drive around the neighborhood, pulling all my stuff,” she recalled.

Sheriff did that for 22 years.

When her kids were young, she also coached their softball teams, and served on the city’s Recreation Advisory Committee, later renamed the Recreation Advisory Board, from 1987-1994. During her time on the board, she and Ormond Beach resident Muffi Chanfrau worked on a

“This was a hoarder’s garage — all the way up to the ceiling,” Sheriff said. “Boxes, bags, just a disaster.

That year, I cleaned it up and in February of 2020, we had our first garage sale and made a little over $2,000 in a weekend.”

thing, and the garage began filling up again. So Sheriff went to work again, and now, she jokes she’s organized herself out of a job. Not quite, though — since Executive Director Gloria Max’s death in September, it’s been all hands on deck at the Jewish Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank.

Sheriff, like many other volunteers, has increased the number of hours she donates to the nonprofit.

WORKING TOGETHER

Sheriff, who wears her last name on a sheriff’s badge pendant around her neck, lives by two words: Be kind.

Whether it’s helping out in the Jewish Federation by answering phones, sorting vegetables, or making sure clothing items are organized for the community, Sheriff is ready to lend a hand. It’s just the kind of person she’s always been, she said.

“If I saw someone on the side of the road that needed help, I’d stop,” Sheriff said. “A lot of people just drive by. As a matter of fact, I have gone to McDonald’s when they’ve had buy-one-get-one-free sandwiches, and I get two and then I find somebody who’s sitting on the side of the road and give them the other sandwich.”

But she doesn’t think this sets her apart from the other volunteers.

They all pitch in when needed, and are there to support one another in whatever needs to get done. Many of them are “self-starters,” she said, and don’t need to be told what needs to be done around the food bank.

“This is such a good group of people to work with,” Sheriff said.

“Everybody will jump in and do what needs to be done to get the job done.”

Taft began his career with OBFD at 18 years old. In fact, he graduated from Taylor Middle-High School a half-year in advance just so he could enter fire school earlier.

After all, fire service ran in his blood. His father was the chief of the Daytona Beach Fire Department, where his cousin works and uncle retired from. Taft, a father himself today, knew he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“But I wanted to step out and make my own legacy at a different department, and do some of those great things and take some of those great teachings that he provided me and utilize them here to expand upon and

make this organization great, like he did Daytona,” Taft said.

Being a firefighter means every day is unique. There’s never a dull moment, Taft said. It has challenges, but for the most part, the job is exciting — you never know what call you’re going to respond to.

“You name it, if they don’t know who to send, we’re going to it,” Taft said. “We get any type of call that you can imagine.”

SETTING GOALS

When a task is placed before him, Taft said he likes to make sure the task is done to the best of his ability. He’s not one to wait around for others to fix problems when he sees what needs to be done.

“It’s been very rewarding for me to put my mind to something, set a goal and then start accomplishing that goal,” Taft said. “It gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment.”

There’s never been one call in particular that showed him why he loved fire service, but he remembers that very early on in his career, he felt that sense of doing good. The comradery with the crew is also a bonus of the job. Essentially, they are all a family.

“I always felt proud telling people what I did for a living, and I always liked being proud of telling people what I did for a living,” Taft said.

“Hands down the best customer service I’ve ever received. Very nice and knowledgeable. Answered all my questions and gave me tons of discounts!”

According to research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, firefighters are 9% more likely to receive a cancer diagnoses in their lifetime, and are 14% more likely to die from the disease, as compared to the general population of the United States. For Taft, who has been with the department for 17 years, that statistic motivates him to keep the Ormond Beach Fire Department’s personal protection program as modern and widelyavailable as possible.

“We have all these firefighters here that are risking their lives in the job, and it’s kind of shame that the thing that they’re wearing, that’s

andy Smith strives to create an environment of positivity and respect in the Ormond Beach Police Department.

The office manager and secretary for Police Chief Jesse Godfrey, Smith has worked for the city of Ormond Beach for three decades, and 2022 marks her seventh with the Police Department. From filling out work orders and processing invoices, to managing training and travel requests for officers and planning the department’s ceremonies for new sworn officers, promotions and retirements, Smith said her work is nonstop.

“The day goes by fast, but it’s enjoyable,” she said. “I see our officers come into the building and I have different appreciation for what they do. It’s always nice to be pleas-

ant and professional and kind of see things from their side.”

Smith worked for 24 years in the city’s human resources department, and the transition to working with

When she first arrived at the Police Department, one of the observations that made an impact on her was seeing the struggles of police officers from a different lens. The public, Smith said, doesn’t always have a positive perception of law

enforcement, but she started seeing things come across her desk that were positive — notes from citizens complimenting officers, comments from elementary school students — and she decided others needed to see them too.

“I thought, ‘If that impacts me, maybe it would impact the whole department,’” Smith said.

Smith approached Godfrey and asked him his opinion about creating a “Positive Pursuits” wall, a place where these comments could be posted or all officers and civilian staff to read. She was given a green light to proceed, and the “Positive Pursuits” wall is now in place.

Sharing the positivity is something they all need, Smith said, and in sharing accomplishments, she hopes it serves to raise morale.

“Hopefully that actually goes externally as well — that what we do on the inside and treating each other with respect, that we can go out and do our job better,” Smith said.

‘YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE’

A couple of years ago, Smith was walking outside to her car when she spotted one of the traffic unit’s motorcycles in the parking lot. It was a hot day, and she couldn’t help thinking about how the temperature was impacting the motorcycle’s seat, and the officer’s equipment. She pointed this out to Godfrey and proposed an idea for a covered area for the department’s motorcycles.

Now, the traffic unit has a designated spot in the parking lot, with a sunshade, for their motorcycles. It’s the little things that help, she said.

“You take pride in the accomplishments,” Smith said. “You see things.

You want to make a difference.”

When she plans ceremonies for officers, she coordinates with the employees’ families. The training room at the department, where the events are held, is typically full when these take place. It’s a big deal, Smith

said — they want the officers to feel appreciated, and to also feel the support of their coworkers and families.

It’s why she tries to do what she can for all in the department, including the volunteers and staff. They’re a family, and they look out for each other, she said.

“When you have that attitude to be positive — maybe somebody is having a bad day and you listen and you be kind,” Smith said. “I think that’s what we should be living by.”

Nicole Damico turns passion for animals into successful small business Nicole Damico’s business, Keys and Collars, recently celebrated its fifth anniversary in October 2021.

n 2017, Nicole Damico’s life changed.

Her mother lost her battle with cancer in April of that year, and for Damico, that changed her perspective on how she viewed life, and how she wanted to live it.

“Obviously, losing my mom was such a pivotal moment in my life, and I didn’t like how my mom turned 65 in February, passed away in April, and never got to enjoy her retirement,” she said. “She missed it, and I hated that for her, because she and my dad had so many plans.”

Her business, Keys and Collars, was just a “side hustle” at the time, as Damico worked full-time as a medical biller. About six months before her mom’s death, she remembers sitting in her driveway with her parents and brainstorming how to turn her love of caring for animals into a business, an idea that was born after a friend asked her to pet-sit while she was away.

Her parents have always been her biggest supporters, and Damico said they encouraged her to pursue her passion.

Now, Keys and Collars recently celebrated its fifth anniversary, and Damico has not only kept a small business afloat during a global pandemic, but she has grown her business to employ 35 people to serve Volusia and Flagler counties, as well as the upper Florida Keys.

Damico has future plans to continue expanding to Tampa, North Georgia and possibly Jacksonville.

“This business has been my saving grace,” she said.

“I’m nominating Nicole Damico because through her business, Keys and Collars, she’s not only made it easy for residents of Ormond Beach (and beyond) to feel comfortable leaving their

After her mom’s death, Damico took three months off her medical billing job and Keys and Collars, to allow herself time to grieve. Then when she came back to work at the medical office, she realized she hated being there.

“I remember sitting at my cubicle job and I was just like, ‘I don’t like feeling stuck here, and working for somebody else,’” she recalled.

Damico spoke with her father, and he told her he would support what-

ever decision she made. Two months later, she took the leap of faith, and celebrated her last day at her job just one day before her first anniversary of launching Keys and Collars.

SHE’S NEVER LOOKED BACK

Thanks to her clients and her team members, a group of reliable, trustworthy and “goodhearted” people, Damico said she loves her business, which has granted her lifelong friends. She’s spent holidays with her clients, kept them company

in hospital rooms, helped them run errands and taken them to doctor’s appointments. Whatever her clients and team members need, Damico said she tries her best to help.

“I try to be that light in people’s lives because people have been that for me,” she said.

The pandemic, especially in March 2020, was a scary period for Keys and Collars, she said. As a business owner, she was nervous: With people staying home from work and not traveling, many of regular clients didn’t require her services. Damico didn’t want to rely on the government for help, but she still wanted to keep the company afloat.

And so did their regular clients, she said. Once things started opening up again, many hired Keys and Collars to come walk their dogs even though they were still working from home.

“We came back tenfold,” Damico said. “It was just something that you think would have held us back actually flinging us forward. Now, we’re busier than ever.”

“I always carry that around with me as a reminder to be selfless, and even if someone tells you not to do something, to follow your heart and help them if you can,” Damico said.

If she’s going through difficult times, she said she finds helping others helps fuel her to keep going.

Today, she bounces out of bed in the morning excited to see the progress of her business. In life, Damico said she believes that we are given the obstacles to overcome to show others it is possible. “‘You’re given the mountains to show other people that they can be moved,’” Damico said. “I truly believe in that statement and I think you need people in your life like that, because you don’t want to feel alone when you’re going through those hard times.”

Camryn Campbell: The Go-to Girl The athletic Mainland High School senior leads with a can-do attitude and the grit to back it up MICHELE MEYERS CONTRIBUTING WRITER

C

amryn Campbell is a senior at Mainland High School and coach T. A.’s “go-to girl” for athletics and anything else that needs to be done on campus.

Terrence Anthony or coach T. A., as he is called by his students, is the school’s athletic director and track and field coach. He knows he can rely on Campbell to fill any spot, on any relay team, at any time. If there is something she doesn’t know how to do, she will work at it until she figures it out.

“Camryn’s true event is the long jump,” he said. “She is not a sprinter, but if I put her on the 4x100 relay team, she will sprint. She’s a jack of all trades when it comes to being on that track. She does it all. Whatever I ask her to do, she does.”

Ten years ago, he had just finished training some kids at the Mainland track when he saw Ebony Harris working with her daughters, Campbell and sister Cassidy. The girls had an impending Amateur Athletic Union Track and Field National Championship and Harris decided to take her girls out to get some extra track time.

Anthony walked over to help and has been coaching them ever since.

athletes and has been sports-oriented since the age of 5. Her mother was a hurdler and a basketball player while attending Atlantic High School, and her father played football for Mainland. She credits her mom for motivating her to run track, which she fell in love with from the start.

“Cammi has always been a competitive kid and a lover of all sports,” Harris said. “She always wanted to

try a sport even if it was just one time and never quits anything she starts.

The best thing about her is she’s still loving and caring at 17.”

Sports have always dominated Campbell’s schedule at Mainland.

This year, she will be a four-year varsity letterman in track and field, a four-year volleyball player with three as a varsity letterman and a four-year basketball player with two

as a varsity letterman. Campbell’s experience as a running back for the Daytona Beach Bucs tackle football team and the Cowboys flag football team has lead her to add flag football to her repertoire in spring.

She is currently in the middle of a rigorous game schedule with her high school basketball team, but appreciates the challenge.

“We have a pretty good schedule,” Campbell said. “We don’t have any team that is going to lay down and let us win. Even when we lose by a certain amount of points, we play to the end of the game. We never give up.”

Head basketball coach Brandon Stewart is grateful to have had the privilege of coaching her for four years and having her on his team.

“Camryn Campbell is a special person,” he said. “Tough as any basketball player gets, that is Camryn.

She is the type of young lady that falls and gets back up, falls again and gets back up again. She brings grit, toughness and a mentality that is not afraid of anyone. She is a natural leader by example of how hard she plays. I appreciate Cam to the moon for what she has given Mainland High School. She is amazing.”

Athletics have always felt more natural than academics for Campbell, especially when she transitioned from attending Warner Christian Academy in middle school with a student population of approximately 700, to Mainland which has a population closer to 1,900 students.

For Campbell, it was a shock, and she struggled to find her footing in her freshman and sophomore years, doing just enough to allow her to play sports.

She now knows she can do the work and that she needs good grades to attend college. With a current 3.9 GPA, the student-athlete has been accepted into four colleges, her top choices being University of North Florida and Florida A&M University. Even though she enjoys watching various legal cases and considered being a defense attorney, she would like to major in English and be a secondary English teacher.

“My mom and my grandfather are my role models,” Campbell said. “My grandfather passed on May 3 last year, and I dedicate all of my games and anything I do in school that is positive to him. My graduation is going to be to him because he is not going to get to see me graduate.”

B

rian Dunlop is captain of the Sandcrabs soccer team, an AICE student, maintains a 4.5 GPA, co-founded the Spirit Club with his buddy Ria Gupta, and is the owner of The Glass Geek, a window cleaning service.

“When COVID hit last year, my business stopped, because obviously people didn’t want you to go in their

homes,” Dunlop said. “I had to pick up another job so I worked at the Gap in the outlets. Retail is not for me.”

Dunlop is a senior at Seabreeze High School who has tried multiple sports throughout his life. There was only one he came back to, and that was soccer. He tried out his freshman year, but did not make the team.

Instead of giving the sport up, it drove him to work harder toward his goal of playing soccer for Seabreeze.

“Our proudest moment as parents was watching his response to not making the soccer team his freshman year,” his mother Praise Dunlop said.

“Most kids would have given up, but it made him work harder. He came back his sophomore year and made the team. To see him not make the

team as a freshman and then to now be captain just shows his character and work ethic. Watching him be a leader on the team is so much more important to us than how well he does on the field.”

Dunlop’s co-captain is Cole Miller, who adds balance to their responsibilities. Miller is a midfielder and brings an offensive perspective, whereas, Dunlop brings a defender’s rationale. He hopes to help his team create and finish more opportunities on goal and be smarter and more efficient with the ball.

“Brian has maturity and leadership beyond his years,” coach Jon Kinsler said. “He does everything asked of him and puts it into use on the field. He’s bought into all the coaching I have implemented and his play has skyrocketed from it. There is no one on the field that works harder, and he’s been a no-brainer captain selection for our program.”

Prior to moving to Daytona Beach, Dunlop and his three younger sib-

lings lived in Titusville, where his father Chris Dunlop was a pastor and his mother was always busy organizing church activities. Both his grandfathers were also pastors.

Dunlop considered following in their footsteps, but for right now, it is “not in the cards.”

Academically, Dunlop excels with a consistently high GPA and his enrollment in Seabreeze’s Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education, which offers college level rigor at the high school level. Additional college credits can be acquired, similar to Spruce Creek High School’s International Baccalaureate program.

“At school, I consider the AICE coordinator, Ms. Gaines, to be a mentor,” Dunlop said. “She has been really helpful regarding applying to colleges and knowing what to do.

Over the past four years, she’s always been someone that I can talk to.”

Dunlop has applied to Florida State University and will find out in

February if he’s accepted. He plans on going to college to become an anesthesiologist.

“I’ve always wanted to travel,” Dunlop said. “When I am an anesthesiologist or even in another medical field, I could go to other countries, help people and travel at the same time.”

With a demanding senior year ahead of him, Dunlop has decided to take his glass cleaning business at a slower pace. The Glass Geek was born out of his dad’s desire for him to come up with a business of some sort when he was 14 years old. The two of them watched a lot of YouTube videos about cleaning windows and Dunlop cleaned his sliding glass doors over and over for practice. The business was steady until COVID shut it down last year.

“It’s actually very satisfying,” Dunlop said. “ You put soap and water on the window and use a squeegee to take it off. Very satisfying.”

Special connections: Pathways pre-K teacher’s love of education began with piano lessons

J

oan Wheeler always knew she wanted to be a teacher, but at 11 years old, that wish was further solidified, and molded, when she met Johnnie.

One afternoon, she recalled that a neighbor stopped by to chat with her mother. The family lived in a big house down the street, and Wheeler knew their son went to a special school. That afternoon, she sat in the kitchen and listened as her mother and the neighbor spoke about her son Johnnie, who desperately wanted to learn how to play piano.

Johnnie was a few years older than Wheeler, and was diagnosed with Down syndrome. No piano teachers would take him as a student, and the neighbor asked if Wheeler would be willing to teach him.

“My mother thought for a moment, and responded, ‘That would be so good for her. Yes, she’ll do it,’” Wheeler said. “I was unsure of myself, but, twice a week, for $2, I taught Johnnie to play the piano.”

Johnnie went on to play “Pomp and Circumstance” at his own graduation, played at church and even performed at the governor’s mansion in Richmond, Virginia.

It’s because of Johnnie that Wheeler not only pursued teaching, but majored

in special education. The two remain friends after 50 years, and Johnnie still plays piano.

Wheeler, who is Pathways Elementary Teacher of the Year, is in her 40th year of teaching. She teaches a blended preschool class, where her students are a mix of children with and without disabilities. Some are enrolled in the state’s voluntary pre-kindergarten program, others are children with disabilities who have individualized education programs, and some are developing 3-year-old kids.

She said she could not do her job without the help of her paraprofessionals, Marylee Alfredson and Cindi Dawley.

Wheeler is also one of the five finalists for Volusia County School District’s 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year.

“I’m honored to be nominated, especially by my peers,” Wheeler said. “Every day, I see the love and dedication of teachers throughout Pathways Elementary school, and to know they chose me

as their Teacher of the Year is humbling.”

She began her education career in Smithfield, Virginia, in 1982, but her life took a turn on Sept. 11, 2001. Wheeler was on a playground in Alexandria, Virginia, a few miles away from the Pentagon when she spotted a plane flying overhead, “so low that three of my non-verbal students pointed and signed ‘airplane,’” she recalled. Then, they heard the crash.

Her husband was a paramedic for the Alexandria Fire Department and spent the next 15 days working the crash site at The Pentagon.

“Other local tragedies with personal connections followed; the trauma took a toll on both of us,” Wheeler said. “After working 24 years in Virginia in various Early Childhood Special Education settings, it was time for a change. We chose Ormond Beach, Florida, as our new home, and we’ve never regretted the decision.”

Wheeler has been at Pathways Elementary for 16 years now. She loves being able to build relationships with her students, their families and her coworkers. One of the greatest rewards, she said, is helping the class to form a community that looks out for each other, and one that both learns and grows together.

“This has been a challenging year, and they’re working harder than ever putting in extra hours, tutoring after school, and persevering in every way for each of their students,” Wheeler said.

“Representing such a professional and dedicated group is a daunting task. But I will do my best to make them proud.”

n Sara Ambrosio’s eighth grade yearbook, students were asked to list what they wanted to be when they grew up.

She didn’t have to think long. She’d known since the fourth grade that she wanted to become a speech language pathologist.

“Once the yearbook was published, everyone asked me what that was!” Ambrosio said.

Ambrosio was selected as Beachside Elementary’s Teacher of the Year, the first ever after the school was created out of the merger between Osceola Elementary and Ortona Elementary.

This year marks her 16th as a fully certified speech language pathologist, and in her job, she helps children of all grades. She said she is humbled that her colleagues voted for her.

“My time has always been split between the two schools, so now that we are combined, I feel lucky,” Ambrosio said. “I am proud to represent both places. I work with so many fantastic individuals that deserve this designation.”

In summers as a child, Ambrosio used to volunteer in the nursing home her mother worked in, and she was always paired up with someone from

the home’s rehabilitation department. She typically helped transport residents back and forth to their therapy appointments, as well as aided the therapists with other necessary tasks, but one day in fourth grade, she was paired with the home’s speech language pathologist to help her prepare some materials.

Ambrosio got to observe her sessions for the day, and it was a day that would shape the rest of her life.

Ambrosio received speech therapy in school from kindergarten through third grade, and she remembered feeling it was a “bad thing” to get picked up from class and taken to another room for extra help, she said.

“I was determined that, if I worked in a school as a speech language pathologist, I would make sure everyone wanted to come to speech/language all the time,” she said.

Ambrosio received her

undergraduate degree from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City and her master’s degree from City University of New York’s Hunter College.

Her favorite thing about her job is the relationships she has with students. Ambrosio said she does her best to spend time with them outside of therapy sessions, which are often conducted in a smallgroup format. She likes the opportunity this provides to get to know her students, and have them get to know her.

Ambrosio said she loves when a student approaches her in the hallway to tell her something funny that happened to them over the weekend. She always looks forward to seeing them.

“I always want my students to know that they are loved and that I believe in them no matter what,” Ambrosio said. “Every minute is a new fresh start!”

W

hen things get hard, we work harder.

That’s a lesson Bobbi Reamer, teacher at Pine Trail Elementary School, frequently speaks with her class about.

Since she currently teaches a gifted unit of kindergartners and first graders, the challenge could come in the form of a word problem, a team project, or sometimes a hardto-pronounce word.

“Sometimes working harder isn’t just about putting in more effort, it’s about thinking of things a different way and looking at it from a different perspective,” Reamer said. “With the growth mindset, ‘yet’ is a powerful word. Just adding those three letters to the end of a phrase such as, ‘I don’t get this… yet,’ empowers learners to take charge of their learning and know that with persistence and perseverance, that ‘yet’ will come before you know it.”

Reamer is Pine Trail’s Teacher of the Year, a nomination she said humbles her, as she is surrounded by wonderful teachers. She’s in her 16th year of teaching.

Her favorite thing about her career is seeing the “aha moment” when a student understands a concept or skill they had been struggling with.

Their faces light up with pride and enthusiasm, Reamer said.

W

hile she always knew she wanted to work with children, Mindy Moor hadn’t imagined she would become a teacher until she started college.

At the time, while studying at Daytona State College, she was working with adults at disAbility Solutions for Independent Living, and Moor said she discovered she thoroughly enjoyed working together to

originate and revise goals, as well as create experiences that would help them reach these goals.

“Knowing the age range and the line of work I wanted to be involved with, it made sense to become an elementary school teacher,” Moor said.

Now the Teacher of the Year for Tomoka Elementary School, Moor has been teaching third grade since January 2017 after she graduated from DSC. “The nomination reinforces the subtle thought: Students and adults are watching,” Moor said. “It is crucial that my words and actions align in the manner I expect of my students and adults around me.”

Her favorite thing about

being a teacher is the “family,” Moor said — a unit comprising her students, faculty and staff. She likes seeing her students show growth in their academic and personal goals, and enjoys sharing ideas with her peers. She added that the “supportive families we have here reflect the work ethic and desire to succeed in our students.”

If she could share one piece of wisdom with her students, Moor said it would be the words of 1 Corinthians 15:58.

“No matter how rich or poor, powerful or powerless, you feel or become, ‘be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain,’” Moor quoted.

W

hen it came to choosing a profession, Candace Haynes didn’t have to look very far to find a role model.

Her mother was an educator herself, an amazing one at that, said Haynes, and it was through watching her at work that she was inspired to follow in her footsteps.

“I saw the way her students’ loved her and the way she made learning come to life,” Haynes said. “I wanted that to happen in my own classroom.”

Haynes, who is Ormond Beach Elementary’s Teacher of the Year, is now in her 11th year of teaching. The nomination makes her feel privileged, and the third grade teacher said she’s proud to be a part of OBE. “It is an honor to be selected as Ormond Beach Elementary’s Teacher of the Year,” she said. “It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that my peers think so highly of me, my teaching and dedication to the profession. My takeaway is gratitude.”

One interesting fact about her time at OBE is that she’s taught many of the same kids over the years. She began teaching kindergarten at the school, and was later moved to first and second grade teaching positions. Haynes said her

But that’s not easy to do now that she’s been named Ormond Beach Middle

School’s Teacher of the Year.

It’s a nomination that makes her feel both happy and nervous, and through the process, has helped her become aware of her own accomplishments.

In the past, she said she’s felt she hasn’t been involved with many projects and programs, but looking back at the list — which includes being named the 2020 Florida Mathcounts Coach of the Year by the Florida Engineering Society — Demchak realized she needs to give herself more credit.

favorite thing about teaching is building relationships with her students and “empowering them to be accountable learners and good human beings.”

“One piece of wisdom I would share with my students would be: You can have a wonderful and meaningful life if you are kind and honest, work hard, have determination, put forth effort and believe in yourself,” Haynes

said.

Teaching is both a rewarding and difficult profession to be in, she said, and it isn’t commonly recognized as such.

“I am beyond grateful and excited to represent Ormond Beach Elementary School,” Haynes said. “We have so many educators on our campus with an abundance of knowledge and years of experience.”

Natalie Demchak’s love of teaching began in her teen years.

appreciative that my peers nominated me and chose me to represent Ormond Beach Middle school,” Demchak said. “I didn’t expect it.”

Her love of teaching started when she was a teenager. She was asked to tutor both her peers and younger students in math, and she found she liked being able to show them how to solve problems. Outside of academics, Demchak also taught horseback riding, and she enjoyed watching how people progressed on the field and built up their confidence.

Both of these experiences contributed to her decision to become a teacher.

“I was often told I explained things well so I knew I must be good at teaching,” Demchak said. “Enjoying helping others and knowing I was good at it steered me towards teaching.”

Now in the 19th year of her career, Demchak teaches eighth grade pre-algebra math as well as seventh and eighth grade algebra 1 honors. Her favorite thing about teaching are the “aha” moments, she said — she loves them. It doesn’t matter if she’s teaching a students to understand new concepts or furthering a more advanced student’s thinking, when that moment happens, as a teacher, “you know,” she said.

If there was one piece of advice she could share with her students, it would be simply to listen.

“Listen to your peers, communication is important,” Demchak said. “Listen to your elders, they have way more experience and can help you to not make the same mistakes they may have.”

istory surrounds Joseph Vetter at all times.

He teaches it. He lives it. He performs it.

Vetter, a local re-enactor who participates in community historical events, began teaching 21 years ago. As an educator and local historian, he said he loves inspiring individual students to pursue careers they love, especially when that becomes teaching history themselves — in fact, six of his past students have followed in his footsteps.

And now, he’s the Teacher of the Year for Hinson Middle School.

“The nomination makes me feel a greater sense of recognition for my entire 21 year career as an educator and historian in this community,” Vetter said. “Thousands of students, life-changing field trips to Washington, D.C., and hundreds of historical events have transpired over that time period.”

Vetter currently teaches eighth grade U.S. History. His curriculum centers on American history from the exploration period to the reconstruction era, though his areas of expertise also include the Revolutionary War, AfricanAmerican history, Florida history and the Civil War periods.

From the tapestries depicting the histories of Volusia County and Ormond Beach lining the walls of his classroom, to

the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action remembrance flag at the back of the room, there are touches of history everywhere.

Prior to teaching, Vetter attended St. Bonaventure University, Nova-Southeastern University, Daytona State College and the University of Central Florida. He received his master’s degree in American History from Pace University, and later taught as an adjunct professor at DSC for eight years. He also runs a history-inspired bed-andbreakfast, called the History House of Holly Hill.

“I have realized my purpose in life as an educator and historian of the remarkable

and epic history of the United States,” he said. “My next plans are to teach at the university level, and I continue producing and performing in historical events in our local community and beyond.”

His advice to students?

Always be respectful of those who want to help them and take their advice about their futures.

“The following acronym was recently taught in my classes: FOCUS = Follow One Course Until Success,” Vetter said. “It’s advice about finding a direction in life and a career they enjoy.”

And Vetter certainly enjoys his.

If Eli Freidus could share a piece of wisdom with his students, it would be just that.

After all, change in inevitable.

In his case, it is also what led him to teaching. About 13 years ago, Freidus said he was in between jobs in a construction career that he didn’t enjoy. His mother-in-law was a guidance counselor at the time, and she urged him to try teaching.

“So to fill my time, I took substitute jobs at several schools and fell in love with teaching,” Freidus said. “I began my certification process and took my first full time job the next year. I always enjoyed my time in school due to the great teachers I had, and it made me feel good to give back to a community that I have always been prideful of.”

A native of the area, Freidus attended St. Brendan’s Catholic Church through sixth grade before attending then Ormond Beach Junior High School (now known as Ormond Beach Middle School) for seventh to ninth grade.

And now, he teaches chemistry — both pre-AICE and AICE — at his alma matter: Seabreeze High School.

the Year, Freidus said he was honored to be nominated but felt like there were so many of his peers who were much more deserving of the recognition. Still, his biggest takeaway from the experience can be summed up in one word: gratitude.

“I am grateful to have found a career that brings me a sense of purpose every day,” said Freidus, who is in his 12th year of teaching. “I am grateful for the students that make my days enjoyable, and I am grateful for the colleagues

and former teachers I have had that inspire me to work to get better at my job every day.”

Freidus is also one of the five finalists for Volusia County School District’s 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year.

When he’s not in the classroom, he coaches the girls’ soccer team, and, in previous years, has also coached the boys’ soccer team. He said his favorite thing about his profession are the students.

“They keep me on my toes and they keep my laughing,” Freidus said.

or several years, Kristie Long worked in the corporate world. But ultimately, she wanted a career that could have a deeper impact.

She chose education.

“Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune urged us to ‘Invest in the human soul. Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough,’” Long said. “There are several unmined diamonds just waiting to be discovered. Through education, I’m inspired not only to seek them out, but to mine them and polish each one.”

The Mainland Teacher of the Year, Long said that teaching STEM-driven curriculum has offered her the platform to share her scientific background and professional training in the “most profound way.” Long, who has a bachelor’s degree in biological and agricultural systems engineering, currently teaches honors and general chemistry to students in ninth through 12th grades.

In her 11th year of teaching, she is also one of the five finalists for Volusia County School District’s 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year.

Long said receiving the nomination was astounding.

this means,” she said. “It is an honor indeed.”

Her favorite thing about her profession is being able to take an active role in the development of students’ minds in the classroom, as well as beyond school hours. She said she wakes up looking forward every day to helping her students reach “aha moments” through problem-solving and an interactive curriculum.

“As an educator, I am inspired by the promise of our profession: the ability to use our genius in whatever discipline, to cultivate and inspire the young minds,” Long said.

If there was one piece of wisdom she could share with her students, Long said she

would invite them to look to women like Sarah Elisabeth Goode, Valerie Thomas, Gladys West, Dr. Patricia Bath, Dr. Shirley Jackson, Annie Easley, Stephanie Lampkin, Kizmekia Corbet and Ashanti Jackson — to read and research their accomplishments. All are women of color.

“These women’s contributions to STEM have revolutionized the world,” Long said. “They broke through doors and paved the way for the talents and skills brewing in each of you. The world needs your contributions.
