Eleven properties within the city of Ormond Beach were identified by city staff as possible candidates for the Volusia Forever Land Selection and Acquisition Program.

At the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 2, commissioners voted 4-1 to establish a priority list for the properties which placed three properties east of Ormond Lakes (identified as 1, 2 and 3 on the map) at the top, followed by three properties near Central Park (marked as 9, 10 and 11 on the map). City Commissioner Dwight Selby voted against, as he believed properties 4-8 on the map should not be considered because they, with the exception of 901 Airport Road, all front U.S. 1 and are either zoned for commercial use or are already designated for conservation.

“The reason that they haven’t been developed is that they’re really tough properties to develop,” Selby said.

Mayor Bill Partington also expressed an interest in looking at properties 7 and 8 for city acquisition to increase reuse water storage.

The commission also voted 4-1 to continue a consent agenda item regarding a sponsorship request for the ninth-annual Tomoka Marathon to its next meeting. Selby voted against.

The consent agenda item was pulled by Kent, who felt the city should be hosting its own marathon instead of having a third-party run it.

“I believe that our staff could create an event as good if not better, and the citizens of Ormond Beach could reap the rewards of that financial windfall,” he said.

The race is run by Don Stoner of Runner’s High Timing and Race Management LLC. Selby said that chances are, if the city did run the marathon, staff would hire a consultant like Stoner, and was uncomfortable with the city copying the idea of the marathon from Stoner.

The Tomoka Marathon has been taking place in the city since 2014, and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The sponsorship would allow Stoner to provide complimentary beer at the post-race party.

Victor Sims knows how important it is to give a child more than one chance to thrive.

After spending the first 12 years of his life in foster care, hopping from placement to placement — 22 different homes, from what he remembers — he’s seen firsthand the change having a stable home can make, especially for teenagers. And as the executive director of Guiding Hope, an Ormond Beach-based foster care agency that serves teens struggling in the system, he wants to make sure foster parents have both the support, and the will, to give them all the chances they need.

“I always tell people I don’t believe a child deserves a second chance — I believe they deserve another chance,” Sims said.

The agency launched this month and will serve Volusia, Flagler and Putnam counties.

Part of Sims’ model includes the provision of mental health services, educational programs and training for foster care parents and continuum of care once a child ages out of the foster care system, thanks to a partnership with Dreams and Success Homes Foundation, a real estate organization that helps provide transitional housing for young adults 18 and up.

It’s a partnership Sims hopes will bring long-term results.

manded for being challenging and unique. A home and community that expects the best from them but wh e n t h e worst happens, will continue to expect and empower them to be their best.”

SOLUTIONS BASED ON EXPERIENCE

Sims and Williams have been working together in child welfare for about three years, and while their stories are different, they represent each end of the spectrum of the foster care system.

While Sims was adopted at 12, Williams entered the system at 12. Never adopted, Williams had been removed from his home because his mom couldn’t provide him a safe place to live. But even so, he came from a loving home, he said in a recent interview with the Ormond Beach Observer.

His mother’s parental rights were terminated once he entered foster care, and Williams was angry. He showed that by rebelling, and in turn, experienced over 40 different placements in his first six months in the system.

Once he aged out of the system, he realized he spent those six years of foster care in survival mode, he said. He had forgotten what his own dreams were.

“Since then, I’ve created a lot of solutions and programs and been part of a lot of programs to really change the way people look at teens who don’t want to be adopted or don’t find permanency in the system,” Williams said.

homelessness within 18 months, and over 60% of women become pregnant by age 21. Less than 3% will earn a college degree by the time they reach 25 years of age.

Those are the statistics Guiding Hope is fighting, and the work starts when the children are in the foster care system.

past five years. Many teenagers feel a lack of permanency in their foster homes, and are aware that, for the smallest infractions, they can be switched into a different placement. In some circuits in Florida, it’s not uncommon for foster parents to call police when their foster teen refuses to go to a new placement, Sims said.

He wants to ensure their foster homes aren’t ones the child runs away from, but homes to run to. He said he and Williams are creating a program that they wish they had both had access to growing up.

“Our solutions are literally based off our stories,” Sims said.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

Having grown up in the system after his biological father shot his biological mother, it wasn’t until Sims entered kindergarten that he realized not every child was waiting for their forever family.

In that year alone, he experienced four different placements and three schools.

“What kept me moving was that hope,” Sims said. “You know, that something was better on the other side.”

Now that he’s established Guiding Hope, his goal is to have 100 beds for teenagers through foster homes. Currently, there are 53 children in group homes in Volusia County, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families, and Sims believes those should be a last resort in the system. He only experienced one group home in his time in foster care, and refused to be sent to another one after that. Instead, he chose to sleep in a DCF office, something that Sims said is, unfortunately, not a rare occurrence.

But in order to meet his goal, Guiding Hope needs foster parents, and Sims said he seeks to raise the community’s awareness of their mission, in the hopes that adults who have considered fostering in the past will step up.

“If we can find a family that’s willing to give our children chances, I think we’ve done better for our community,” Sims said.

County Council, School Board to adopt different redistricting maps The boards could not agree on one redistricting plan, despite costs.

Two joint meetings, five hours of total discussion and 17 maps later, the Volusia County Council and Volusia County School Board have decided to adopt different maps for redistricting, a decision that will cause more split precincts and ballot styles, particularly for the west side of the county.

While the boards were hopeful about agreeing on a combined version of the respective maps each favored, at the joint meeting held on Thursday, Oct. 28, neither side could agree on the same combined option. The Volusia County Council voted 5-2 to adopt plan “FI-5” — with Council members Fred Lowry and Heather Post voting against — which splits the city of DeBary between Districts 1 and 3.

At the County Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 2, the council further tweaked its map to move a small section of an unincorporated area between Osteen and Enterprise into District 3 from District 5.

The School Board largely favored plan “FI-4,” which keeps the city of DeBary in one district and instead moves Orange City into District 5 from District 1, which were the main differences between the two maps. A motion

to adopt plan “FI-4” failed at the County Council level with 4-3 vote, because according to the county’s charter, a two-thirds vote is needed to approve changing district lines. Council members Danny Robins, Barbara Girtman and Lowry voted against.

County Councilman Ben Johnson said both boards made a “gallant attempt” in trying to adopt the same map.

“We tried and it didn’t work,” Johnson said. “I commend everybody for sitting down and coming to the table and talking about it. I think at this time any further discussion on this is basically wasting everybody’s time when we need to start implementing our plan.”

From the start of the meeting, Lowry said that the task before both boards wasn’t just difficult.

He said it was “impossible.”

“Lake Helen and DeLand don’t want to be split up,” Lowry said. “I completely understand that. I’ve gotten all kinds of emails today from Enterprise and Osteen and they don’t want to be split up, and they don’t want to be with the East side. You’ve got Orange City that doesn’t want to be split up, and you’ve got DeBary that’s tired of being split up. There’s no map that satisfies all four of those criteria, so I don’t know. To me, we’re just going to have to bite the bullet.”

School Board member Anita Burnette asked if it was possible to combine plans “FI-4” and “FI-5,” but county attorney Sebrina Slack said they could not edit maps during the meeting.

“This is pretty much the best effort we could do,” she said.

School Board Attorney Ted Doran told the School Board that, if they were already going a different direction from the County Council, they could review other maps at a future School Board meeting that would bettter suit the district’s needs than “FI-4” and “FI-5.”

Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis pled with both boards to adopt the same map. There will be cities that are going to be upset either way, but adopting one map for both boards

would simplify the elections process for the citizens, she said. She grew emotional as she thanked the boards for trying to reach a consensus.

The County Council did have a vote to reconsider its plan, but it failed since Girtman, Robins and Lowry voted against.

School Board members made two attempts to try to agree with the County Council. First, School Board member Carl Persis made a motion for the School Board to consider adopting plan “FI-5” as well, but the motion died for lack of a second.

Then, School Board member Linda Cuthbert passed her gavel to Board Member Jamie Haynes in order to second a second motion

by Persis to adopt plan “FI-5,” but it failed 3-2, with Burnette, Haynes and School Board member Ruben Colon voting against.

Persis said it was disappointing to leave the meeting without agreeing with one another on district boundaries. Looking at the maps, Districts 2, 3 and 4 were all virtually the same.

“If the representatives from 2, 3 and 4 would all vote the same way, I mean, it’d be done,” Persis said. “There’s no difference.”

To not agree on a map because of a “few blocks,” said Persis, seems shortsighted.

County Council Chair Jeff Brower also expressed his disappointment.

“It’s a failure for the voters,” he said.

Volusia to hold off on using ARPA funds for now Regulatory and legislative changes could be coming; county staff advised the council to wait and see the outcome.

Though Volusia County is still expecting to receive $107 million from the American Rescue Plan Act, less money will be available to be used for provision of government services, a previously broad definition for ARPA’s revenue loss category.

This is a result of recent revenue trends — to include higherthan-expected tourism taxes, state revenue sharing, water and sewer state grant funding and impact fees — and the Department of Treasury’s requirement to convert fiscal-year revenue loss calculations to calendar year amounts. Unlike coronavirus relief dollars granted to the county under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, which had a short timeframe to be used, ARPA dollars are available for four years.

Volusia County initially projected a combined revenue loss of $80 million for the four fiscal years between 2019-2020 and 2022-2023, but, because of the update in calculations, revenue loss for calendar-year 2020 is now estimated at $12 million, with no revenue loss projected for the next three calendar years.

“If you look at just $80 million

versus the $12 million, it seems like a big number,” County Chief Financial Officer Ryan Ossowski said. “But we’re talking about four entire years of an organization that has $620 million in our calculation as far as what our base revenue is.”

What does this mean for the county? The projects planned to be funded through the revenue loss category could need to be revisited.

On June 22, the County Council was given an overview on how ARPA funding could be used, and aside from revenue loss, three other categories were highlighted: COVID-19 response and its negative economic impacts; “premium pay” for essential workers; and water, sewer and broadband infrastructure.

But with likely regulatory and legislative changes coming regarding ARPA dollars, Ossowski suggested waiting until the Department of Treasury updates its guidance. According to the agenda item document, the Department received nearly 1,000 online comments regarding the relief funds, particularly pertaining to the revenue loss calculations being made on calendaryear versus a fiscal-year basis.

As a result, county staff believes guidance could change to allow revenue loss to be calculated on a fiscal-year basis, which would increase the county’s revenue loss calculation for fiscal year 20202021 to $34 million.

Volusia County Public Protection Director Joseph Pozzo was recognized, as he is retiring from his position.

The County Council approved a special one-year “pilot permit” for Sun Buggy Fun Rentals, a beach tram service that will operate on the beach from the International Speedway Boulevard approach to the Emilia Avenue approach.

The council further tweaked its redistricting map to add a small section of about 500 residents in an unincorporated area between Osteen and Enterprise into District 3 from District 5.

Disaster Relief Flexibility Act on Oct. 19, which if signed onto law, would allow 30% of coronavirus relief dollars to be spent on roads, mass transit and other infrastructure projects.

County Manager George Recktenwald agreed that waiting would be prudent, and suggested the council resist committing ARPA funds until the Department of Treasury makes a decision regarding regulatory changes.

He suggested the county hold a workshop in January to discuss the funds.

HIGH ON THE ROAD 2:43 a.m. — 1600 block of North U.S. 1 DUI. A 31-year-old man from Michigan arrested for driving under the influence thought he was seeing a rabbit inside the police patrol vehicle, as well as spiders that “needed to be killed with a shotgun,” according to his arrest report. He told the officer: “Don’t tell me I’m seeing things.”

Police report that the man was stopped after he was driving on the wrong side of the road. Once stopped, he was informed police would begin a DUI investigation and was instructed to perform a series of field sobriety exercises, which he failed.

The man was placed under arrest and, on his way to the police station, began to make several statements while in the back of the patrol vehicle, including that he had recently had a few deaths in his family and an apology for getting “high.” “Am I a crazed drug addict?” said the man, according to the police report. “No, but when I want to do drugs, I’ll do drugs.”

He was taken to jail.

BLOODY EVIDENCE 11:57 p.m. — 300 block of Timberline Trail Criminal mischief. Police arrested a 31-year-old Ormond Beach man who broke his neighbor’s window, causing about $100 worth of damage.

The neighbor told police that she was alerted to the man’s presence via her Ring doorbell,

and that when she saw the footage, she saw him standing at her front door and noticed that her window had been broken. Police responded to the home and upon their arrival, the man was still standing next to the broken window.

The man was uneasy on his feet and leaning against the wall, his left hand bloody, his arrest report details.

He was secured in handcuffs and afterward, told police that he lived nearby, but was so intoxicated that he couldn’t provide them with his street address. The man told police he didn’t remember how the window was broken.

He was taken to jail.

OCT. 31

ALL HALLOW’S EVE 8:56 p.m. — 2000 block of John Anderson Drive Suspicious incident. Halloween is a time for spooks, but for some campers, things got a little too realistic.

Deputies and police officers responded to areas near Tomoka State Park after receiving a report from the beachside about a man screaming for help just west of the intercoastal waterway.

Inside the park, the reporting officer was flagged down by a camper who said the man sounded like he was in distress and that his cries appeared to be coming northeast of his campsite. The camper said he tried to find the man, but never saw him.

A second witness in another campsite gave police a similar account, saying the cries appeared to be coming maybe a quarter to a half-mile northeast from the recreation center. Officials combed the area by boat, jet ski, air and on foot but found nothing.

We don’t need the runway extension Dear Editor: Anyone who lives anywhere near the Ormond airport is affected by the near constant noise of small airplanes buzzing overhead, day and night. Despite our beautiful, natural surroundings, we have this constant annoyance. We have been told that there is nothing that the city can do about it, so we accept it. But do we want to open the door to even more noise?

Those who are trying to convince us that we need the extension say that it will reduce the noise. Really?

Most of the flights are from flight schools that use small Cessna-style aircraft. If the runway is extended, it will be practical for larger aircraft, including small jets, to utilize the airport. There is nothing we can do to prevent a flight school from providing training for these louder aircraft.

The Observer recently published an article about a local flyer who runs a flight school in New Smyrna. That article said “she hopes that with future expansions to the Ormond Beach airport, she’ll be able to expand operations locally.”

So, we may have not only more flights, but louder aircraft.

We are told that the extension will bring new businesses like Security First to the area, thus providing an economic benefit to the city. Flagler Executive Airport already has a runway longer than what is being proposed for Ormond. It takes about 16 minutes to drive there from Security First, which is about 10 minutes longer than it would take them to drive to our airport.

Is saving 10 minutes of driving for a handful of people worth spending millions of dollars, heavily impacting the people who live at the end of the extension, and adding more noise to thousands of Ormond Beach residents? I don’t think so.

BANK SUPPORTS ‘HOMES BRING HOPE’

FIRST RESPONDER APPRECIATION DAY

On the heels of granting $25,000 to Homes Bring Hope, Bank of America recently announced an additional $50,000 commitment to support the nonprofit’s mission to help hardworking people transition from being renters to becoming homeowners, bringing the bank’s support to $75,000, plus advocacy and volunteer support, according to a press release.

“The impact of this gift to the community cannot be overstated,” said Forough Hosseini, founder of Homes Bring Hope and senior vice president of ICI Homes. “Homes Bring Hope, which was created following lengthy planning and research, is only in its first year of operation. Yet already it has guided six clients to homeownership. This grant from Bank of America will help us reach our goal identifying and helping a dozen families achieve homeownership during our first year of operation. That will accelerate the movement as we approach our second year.”

Peter Mannino, president of Bank of America East Central Florida, said they have supported Hosseini and her team for more than a decade in their fight against youth homelessness and hunger via Food Brings Hope and VCAN. “The creation of Homes Bring Hope aligns with our commitment to support local nonprofits that help combat the root causes of poverty through homeownership and the equity it can generate,” Mannino said.

While each of these agencies is independent, the press release explains, they are all affiliated under the FBH Communities banner, allowing them to share resources, best practices and take advantage of certain economies.

In honor of First Responder Appreciation Day, the city of Ormond Beach presented its police and fire departments with a public safety shirt.

The shirt has a similar design as the flag hoisted on Wednesday, Oct. 27, which featured a red and blue joining stripe.

LOCAL ANIMAL RESCUE RAISING FUNDS The SPCA of Volusia Animal Rescue is conducting a fund drive to raise funds for its medical and pet food programs.

Founded in 1977, the volunteer organization is a donation-supported, no kill, nonprofit animal rescue and welfare organization.

It also sponsors weekly lowcost pet shot clinics around the county and assists the Meals on Wheels program with pet food for its clients.

The SPCA of Volusia Animal Rescue is in need of pet food and donations for the rescues in its care, as well as help for its medical fund.

F

or five years, Palm Coast artist Ed Siarkowicz traveled across the state of Florida searching for God in reflections of water.

Accompanied by his mentors — photographer John Olivo and the late Pierre Matisse, grandson of French artist Henri Matisse — the trio looked in lakes, ponds, drainage ditches, and even puddles, for images that reflected beauty. Most of the time, part of the search involved a lot of patience.

With the surface of the water as Siarkowicz’s canvas, his job as a photographer was to wait for the right conditions: The wind, light, bubbles, debris, frogs and turtles.

They all created the texture and patterns on the water canvas, and only when they aligned, did Siarkowicz press his camera’s shutter button.

“That’s the thing that’s worth waiting for,” he said.

Siarkowicz has since put

together 28 images from his impressionistic water reflections photography, all which will be published in his upcoming book titled, “Majestic Reflections.”

He released part of his collection at Ocean Art Gallery in Ormond Beach, where the pieces were on display until Oct. 31, as Siarkowicz was the gallery’s featured artist for the month of October.

ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

Originally from New York, Siarkowicz grew up on a dairy goat farm surrounded by photography.

His grandmother often took him with her to take photos, and the pair spent a lot of time together, whether Siarkowicz was the subject of her photos or whether he was helping her see something through a different lens.

At 15 years old, before he had a license to drive, he got his commercial fishing license and a boat.

When he wasn’t fishing, he was going door to door selling items for his Cub Scout pack, an act that eventually led him to win his first camera.

From that point on, photography wasn’t just something he grew up around — it became a part of him.

practor in 2013, six years after he moved to Palm Coast, he decided to dedicate himself to his art. One of his former patients, Olivo, had been a professional photographer in Manhattan, and once he took a look at Siarkowicz’s work, he told him he needed to show it to the public.

Frank Gromling, owner of Ocean Art Gallery, gave Siarkowicz his first chance to do so in 2014 at his former Flagler Beach gallery.

After a show a couple of years later, Siarkowicz was invited to Matisse’s house for a party, and the two became good friends.

That’s when Matisse introduced him to the concept of impressionistic water reflection photography. With not a lot of information about the art method, Matisse invited Siarkowicz to join him on his journey.

“It wasn’t so much the image that we were looking for,” Siarkowicz said. “We were actually on a search for finding God, and for finding his presence and his revelations with the beauty that he creates, in totally unexpected places.”

The images represent Siarkowicz’s personal search for meaning, understanding and a relationship with God. And the biggest compliment he’s received came from someone who grasped that during the opening reception held at Ocean Art Gallery on Oct. 2.

“There was one person that said, ‘I really see God in this,’” he said. “To me, that is the most impactful compliment — when somebody sees in my work what I went out there to find.”

‘ONE SHOT’

The first day that Siarkowicz began practicing impression-

ist water reflection photography took place at Matisse’s home.

Matisse lived near a lake, and the two went out to take photos of a bird’s reflection on the water. Once in position, Siarkowicz heard Matisse’s camera click once, and then about a minute later, click again.

He, instead, took a burst of photos, startling his mentor.

“He said, ‘One shot. Take one picture,’” Siarkowicz recalled.

Matisse was right.

Every shot in the collection is unaltered. They are merely what Siarkowicz was able to capture through his camera lens, and in his journey for truth, portraying the surfaces of water as they were when he first saw them was critical, he explained. It’s taught him to stay openminded when it comes to finding art.

“Because I think sometimes, out of the most unexpected, disorganized chaos, come the greatest truths,” Siarkowicz said.

Florida audition for a spot in either FEMEA’s All-State Chorus, or All-State Orff ensemble. A similar competition is conducted by the Florida Music Education Association at the middle and high school levels.

Three of Johns’ fifth grade students were accepted into the AllState Elementary Chorus: Stella Taylor, Tracey Spruill and Lily Thompson. Fifth grade student Natalie Ambrosio made it into the Orff ensemble, marking another milestone for her teacher, as she is the first of her students to ever be accepted into that ensemble.

“It’s a huge honor for our school, and just for our district,” Johns said. “To have four from one school is pretty amazing.”

Come January, Johns and her students will travel to Tampa for the FMEA annual conference, joining hundreds of other talented students from across the state.

“It’s just going to be a big ball of beautiful music,” Tracey said.

Preparations for All-State began at the end of fourth grade for Johns’ students. She originally handpicked eight she felt had a good shot at making it, and spent the summer preparing them for their auditions in August.

But it wasn’t until the beginning of October that Johns got a hold of the audition results.

It had become a common practice for students to pop by her classroom and ask if the results were available. Natalie was the

last student to check in with Johns on the day they found out.

She had just stopped by her music teacher’s classroom and initially, was told there wasn’t any news.

“I walked back to my room and then five minutes later, Ms. Johns is like jumping out the door,” Natalie recalls. “She’s like, ‘You made it in!’ It was so exciting.”

Natalie found her friend Stella and enthusiastically told her she had gotten in as well.

“And then I cried,” Stella said.

Johns treasures the moment she found out. There are years that none of her students make it.

All of the girls are passionate about music. Natalie plays piano, Stella is just learning to play the keyboard and Tracey loves to sing — though she said Lily, who was unable to attend the interview with the Observer, is the best singer out of all of them.

“I always knew they were talented, but it’s neat to see them like really start to develop that talent now,” Johns said.

Seabreeze Sandcrabs prepare for playoffs Seabreeze teams also advanced to the regional cross country meet and the state bowling championships.

It’s no coincidence that Seabreeze scheduled its bye on the last week of the season. It was a risk-reward decision that paid off.

While other teams will be completing their regular seasons this week, the Sandcrabs will be preparing for their first playoff appearance since 2007.

“It was definitely optimism,” said Seabreeze third-year coach Pat Brown of scheduling the bye week. “We felt like we were going to be in the playoffs. The first two years we had Mainland in Week 10 and DeLand in Week 11.

It worked out that we were playing them early in the year, and we said if we can make it through 10 weeks healthy, the payout would be huge.”

As the District 7-5A champs, the Sandcrabs (6-4 overall, 4-0 in the district) will host a regional football quarterfinal Nov. 12.

They will find out their opponent when the playoff field is announced Nov. 7.

Seabreeze dispatched Atlantic 48-0 on Oct. 29 to end its regular season with a four-game winning streak. Dimitri Campbell made big plays in all three phases of the game with a touchdown catch, a punt return for a touchdown and an interception.

“Dimitri might be the most dynamic player in Central Florida,” Brown said. “When he gets the ball in his hands, everybody just looks to see what he’s going to do. He’s definitely going to make the first defender miss.”

While Seabreeze will be at home Nov. 12, Mainland appears to be headed toward a road game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Bucs beat South Lake 52-12 on Oct. 30 to improve to 5-4, 3-1 in District 6-6A. Jonathan Campbell threw two touchdown passes and caught one.

Individual district champions included Jordyn Eckert in the 100-yard breaststroke, Mackenzie O’Keefe in the 100-yard butterfly and Z.Z. Nichols in the 100yard backstroke.

The girls were seeded first in the 200-yard freestyle relay going into regionals Oct. 29 at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce.

The team, consisting of Cassidy Clare, Eckert, Nichols and O’Keefe, qualified 12th to compete at the state championships Friday, Nov. 5, in Stuart.

In addition to the free relay, freshman O’Keefe and her relay buddies will swim in the medley relay event at state. She will also compete in two individual events: the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle.

O’Keefe has been swimming since she was 6 years old and currently swims with Hydro4 Swimming. This is her first year on the Seabreeze team.

“I love Seabreeze,” she said.

“Coach John and coach Sam are amazing. I am so excited. I usually celebrate by going to a restaurant and ordering boba tea.”

Junior Caleb Orchard finished first in the 50-yard freestyle at regionals and captured the 24th spot in the 100 yard freestyle, awarding him two individual event slots at state. Orchard started swimming in seventh grade but got serious about the sport in high school. Last season, he contracted COVID and was forced to miss districts. This will be his first time competing at the state level.

“I didn’t think I’d do it in the 50,” he said. “I thought I’d do it in the 100. Just kind of pulled it out of nowhere. I don’t know what to say. Buy a tech suit is all I’ve got.”

All of the Seabreeze swimmers moving on to the state championships shaved time off of their regional qualifiers, including Eckert who cut almost six seconds off her time in her signature event, the 100-yard breaststroke.

Eckert finished first at districts with a time of 1:15.82 and qualified for states with a 1:10.11. Cassidy placed third at districts in the 100 free with a time of 57.31 and qualified for states with a 56.46.

Team captain Andrew Randolph started his swimming career between the ages of 4 and 5 at the YMCA. He is a senior this year and has decided to swim when he attends college to stay in shape but not competitively.

“I feel really good about my team,” he said. “This has been my favorite year so far. To stay motivated, we usually start with a chant, but I talk to my teammates.

Not so much about the meet but personal stuff.”

The state meet will be at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart.

Mainland’s RPI is boosted by its strength of schedule. The Bucs’ opponents’ winning percentage of .705 is second-highest in the state among Class 6A teams. They play another strong opponent Nov. 5 at Jacksonville Bolles (6-2).

SEABREEZE GIRLS, BOYS AMONG TOP 3 AT DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

The Seabreeze girls finished second and the boys were third at the District 3-3A cross country meet Oct. 30 in Winter Springs.

Seabreeze’s Tyler Herndon finished second overall in the boys 5-kilometer race with a time of 16:42.18, while Hayden Herndon was eighth (16:53.79) and Noah Parris was 20th (17:51.55).

Freshmen Mackenzie Roy (fifth, 19:35.45) and Ariana Roy (seventh, 19:43.86) led the Seabreeze girls. Ella Chandler finished 10th with a time of (20:03.66), while Nickole Dane was 13th at 20:20.82.

Mainland’s boys and girls teams both finished eighth.

The regional meet is scheduled for Nov. 6 at the Austin-Tindall Sports Complex in Kissimmee.

SANDCRABS SWEEP DISTRICT BOWLING

Seabreeze’s boys and girls teams both won District 3 bowling titles on Oct. 26. They were joined at the state championships (Nov. 2-4 at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando) by Mainland’s boys team, which was the state runner-up in 2020.

Seabreeze’s Kara Beissel and Spencer Mosher had the top girls and boys series on the day. Beisell had a 573 series, while Mosher bowled the day’s high game of 257 to post a 716 series.

Seabreeze’s boys and girls golf teams are both headed to the state championships.

They will be joined by Mainland’s Loa Johannsson, who took individual medalist honors at the Region 3-2A girls’ meet, Nov. 2 at Dubsdread Golf Course in Orlando, with an even-par 70.

Seabreeze won the team title with a score of 339. Amelia Cobb (74) finished third overall, and Riley Fletcher and Hannah Ashton tied for ninth with 84s.

The Seabreeze boys finished third with a 330 at Dubsdread on Nov. 1 to take the final team qualifying spot. Brandon Godfrey finished second overall with a 74, while Tyler Lunsford was 13th with an 81. New Smyrna Beach won the team title with a 317.

The Class 2A state championships will be Nov. 12-13 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Top sale gets more than $5 million A

house on the ocean was the top real estate transaction in Ormond Beach and Ormond-by-the-Sea for the week of Sept.

19-25 in the Multiple Listing Service. Brian and Michele Page sold 535 Ocean Shore Blvd. to Elizabeth Forman and David Closky, of Somerville, Ohio, for $5,117,500. Built in 2007, the house is a 5/8.5 and has four fireplaces, a swimming pool, elevator and 11,895 square feet. It sold in 2011 for $2.9 million.
