Antisemitic vandal arrested A 34-year-old Palm Coast man was arrested on Dec. 4, after he was identified as the suspect involved in a series of antisemitic vandalism acts, by way of stickers, in the city of Ormond Beach.

These crimes, per an investigation by Ormond Beach Police, began in late October, and caused the city $2,150 in damages and labor. According to his arrest report, Daniel McGinnis was identified on Dec. 1, after his fingerprints were found on a No Parking Sign from which police removed a sticker a few days before. Police were then able to identify his vehicle, which led to his arrest in Flagler County.

The stickers were removed from various areas in the city, including Nova Community Park, traffic light poles at Main Trail and North Nova, areas around City Hall, and the west side of the Granada Bridge.

They contained phrases claiming the Holocaust was a hoax, Antifa to be Jewish militia and alleging sexual content involving minors.

McGinnis was charged with criminal mischief. He was released on a $15,000 bond on Dec. 5.

Tattersall fails to get OK from Planning Board

DOH seeks community input

The Ormond Beach Planning Board denied the proposed Tattersall at Tymber Creek project with a 5-1 vote during its meeting on Thursday, Dec. 9, citing concerns that the development would worsen existing traffic and flooding issues. The project will be reviewed by the City Commission at its Jan. 18 meeting.

Planning Board member G.G. Galloway voted against denying Tattersal; he was in favor of moving the project along. He said the development was still in the beginning stages, and felt that the board should give the developer time to look into the issues.

“We do not have housing,” Galloway said. “There are more Realtors … than we have houses for sale.

Ladies and gentlemen, Florida’s been found.”

He also cautioned his fellow board members about turning a project down, as future proposals for the property could have even more concerns.

The developer, local home builder Trey Paytas of Paytas Homes, seeks a re-issuance of a development order for the 84-acre parcel located at the northwest corner of Tymber Creek Road and Airport Road. This property is already zoned as a Planned Residential Development, and has had three previous applications.

The first dates back to 2006, when the City Commission approved a 68-lot subdivision, but the approval expired in 2014. A year before its expiration date in 2013, the City Commission denied a second request to amend the PRD to allow 163 lots. Then in 2018, the commission denied another development order request to allow 144 lots.

The current Tattersall project proposes 143 single-family lots, but several board members thought that was still too many.

there’s water there,” Board member Angeline Shull said. “There’s no way to get around it. When it rains, the roads are flooded. It’s just a problem, so I can’t see putting in more homes into this area is going to help the situation.”

Many residents of that area spoke at the Planning Board meeting, the majority opposing the project.

Resident Ron Hooper cited Volusia County Traffic Engineering records showing that traffic counts on Tymber Creek Road have increased 107% from 2008 to May of this year.

“If the developer wants to be a good partner, he needs to do the right thing,” Hooper said, “not just meet various codes and leave a traffic mess for the residents to deal with for the next several years to come.”

However, resident Mark Edwards, who owns a property bordering the project parcel, thought this design was the most “intelligent” out of the the ones presented in the past.

“This property, which is zoned correctly for this kind of development, will be built on someday, and someday, somebody may build something on there with a different planning commission, a different

City Commission, that’s way worse than the plan that’s being presented right now,” Edwards said.

Despite some of the flooding concerns, not all of the property is wet, said Bill Lites, director of environmental services for Zev Cohen and Associates, the project’s engineering firm. He said 14 of the 84 acres are wetlands, and the rest is not marshland.

“There’s a lot of slope coming up from Groover Branch that comes up high on the north end,” Lites said.

“That one marsh by Airport [Road] is wet, and it holds water a lot, but it’s not all wetlands.”

After three hours of input from both the developer’s team and the public, the board was still struggling with recommending their approval for Tattersall.

Board member Mike Scudiero said there is a chance a future proposal could be “worse,” but that it was a chance he was willing to take.

“I think government owes it to its citizenry to make all of this stuff right before they come asking for other things to be approved,” Scudiero said.

“It is very sad that the rite of passage for us to be able to do something for our veteran teachers is to get new teachers to $47,500.”

hristmas tunes sung by the Ormond Beach Choral Society filled the air at the Ormond Beach City Hall Plaza prior to the tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Mayor Bill Partington declared a happy holidays to all as he and the city commissioners walked toward the tree to flip the oversized “light switch.” The night’s festivities had officially begun.

In a flash of lights and scream of sirens, the Ormond Beach Police Department led the 30th-annual Home for the Holidays parade in front of an anticipatory crowd gathered along U.S. 1, Granada Boulevard and South Beach Street.

Friends and families joined in the revelry after last year’s parade had become a casualty of the dreaded COVID-19 cancellations. This year, the city of Ormond Beach also increased protection for both parade participants and observers by strategically placing work vehicles across the entrance to Beach Street and the Granada bridge.

Ormond Beach Police Explorers were used to help people cross safely and stop children from running out in front of the parade vehicles. It was Evan Doane’s first year as an explorer.

“I never knew it was a thing until my coach told me,” he said.

“From the first day, I’ve been really intrigued, so I’m sticking in. I really like this.”

Pay raises approved for Beach Safety Teachers’ base salary to be raised to $47,500

A new three-year bargaining agreement between Volusia County and the International Union of Police Associations, representing the county’s beach safety specialists, was unanimously approved by the County Council at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 14. This contract includes pay raises and a $2,000 retention bonus.

Union president Ben Whetstine, a sergeant with the county’s Beach Safety division, said the contract passed with 94% of union’s support.

The agreement was ratified by a 40-3 vote, and Whetstine said he felt the contract is a “solid foundation” to build upon in the future.

“I’m proud to be part of an agency that has such a profound impact on the residents and visitors to Volusia County,” Whetstine said. “Countless times, the members of Beach Safety are part of life-

saving efforts that garner lifelong gratitude from the victims, their families and their loved ones. Often, these are rescues that would be career highlights in other agencies, but among the elite workforce I work with, we perform these rescues so often that they are our norm, and though often unlauded, it is no less impressive or impactful.”

According to a county press release, the agreement — which replaces a contract that expired in September 2020 — with the Beach Safety specialists, senior lifeguards and lifeguard supervisors calls for covered employees to receive a 3% raise for the last fiscal year and a 4% raise, or $1 an hour (whichever is greater) for the current fiscal year. The raises will increase the minimum hourly pay to $16.65 for beach safety specialists, $21.10 for senior lifeguards and $25.51 for lifeguard supervisors.

For fiscal year 2022-2023, which is the last year included in the agreement, Beach Safety employees will receive either a 3% raise or “whatever pay raise is approved for the rest of the county employees, whichever is greater. This will be dependent, however, on the County Council not adopting a rollback millage rate” the press release states.

Should the county go to

rollback next fiscal year, the county and the union will renegotiate.

In addition, the agreement also includes a onetime $2,000 retention bonus for covered employees in exchange for signing a twoyear employment commitment. Over the last 20 months, Beach Safety has had to replace 16 of 41 beach officers and four out of 11 beach safety specialists, said Beach Safety Director Andy Ethridge.

“That’s a lot of people to put through training and that’s put a tremendous [strain] on my training staff, as well as my existing staff who have really stepped up to fill the gap and make sure that the mission is carried forward, and that there is very little disruption in service,” he said.

But, things seem to be looking up for the division.

Ethridge shared that, despite many law enforcement agencies struggling with staffing shortages, Beach Safety anticipates to enter the summer season with all of its fulltime positions fully staffed.

“I think this contract is going to go a long way in helping me maintain that status,” Ethridge said.

School Board officials urge veteran teachers to speak to lawmakers to ensure the mandate continues to be funded in future years.

Volusia County Schools recently reached a tentative bargaining agreement with teacher’s union Volusia United Educators, and the starting base salary for all teachers is expected to be raised to $47,500 in 2022 when the district receives the second round of state funds to increase teacher salaries, per the plan outlined by the governor.

VCS Human Resources Director Rachel Hazel said at the School Board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 14, that some teachers could see a salary increase of $3,000, which is set to cost the district $54.9 million over the next three years. This includes $7.1 million for support staff.

Hazel walked the School Board through a history of raises at the school district, made more complicated over the last decade due to the different state statutes enacted, such as the end of tenures in 2011 and the negotiation of a performance pay methodology in 2015. Salaries, Hazel explained, depend on a when a teacher was hired, how much experience they entered into the district with, and where in the county they work.

“Everyone’s salary is their own story,” Hazel said. “What we essentially have is over 4,000 teachers and 4,000 different salary schedules.”

still negotiating teacher salaries, while some have ratified new agreements. Flagler County has moved forward with a $48,363 base salary, which is 1.8% higher than Volusia’s tentative base salary agreement. Orange County, which already has a base salary of $47,500, is at an impasse with its teachers union.

School Board members expressed gratitude for increasing new teacher salaries, but worried about the future, should Legislature decide to reduce funding, a move they believe would harm veteran teachers the most.

“It is very sad that the rite of passage for us to be able to do something for our veteran teachers is to get new teachers to $47,500,” School Board Chair Ruben Colon said. “That is what the Legislature has decided, and it is what it is. We’re grateful for it. We take all kinds of money that comes our way.”

School Board member Carl Persis said he believes the governor’s plan to increase base salaries for teachers was “the right thing to do” because of the current teacher shortage, but that it was unfortunate, that Volusia’s starting salary was lower than other neighboring school district’s, an issue he blamed on district cost differential.

Persis hopes that now that base salaries will reach $47,500, the district will be given more of a leeway to spread future funds in a way

that would be fairer to veteran teachers.

Later in the meeting, during public participation, VUE president Elizabeth Albert said that mid-year and veteran teachers — and support staff — have to be the priority.

“If Governor DeSantis’ plan, respectfully, was a great plan, we would have more teachers than we need,” Albert sad. “But that’s not the case. Across the state, there’s approximately 5,000 teacher vacancies.”

She asked that the board support Senate Bill 298, which if passed, would allow school districts to use state funds to raise salaries of other personnel if the district has met the minimum base salary for teachers. The bill would also remove grandfathered and performance pay contingencies, Albert explained.

The next legislative session begins Jan. 11.

“You’re absolutely right,” Albert said. “In a blink of an eye, they can take away our funding. If we do not make this a priority, if they don’t hear from Volusia County every single day from Jan. 11 to March 11, we’re not doing our job.”

Colon issued a call to action for teachers to contact their state representatives and tell their stories.

“They need to hear the stories of the veteran teachers who say, ‘For the last three years, this is how it has felt like to be felt unvalued,’” Colon said.

For seven years, the planetarium at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach remained nameless. But as far as museum staff was concerned, its future was written in the stars.

On Thursday, Dec. 9, MOAS celebrated the official dedication of the Lowell and Nancy Lohman Family Planetarium, a moment that marked the completion of a nine-year project to renovate the museum’s entrance courtyard, according to a press release. Now, when visitors arrive, they’ll be welcomed by a new blue illuminated sign on the exterior of the Root Auditorium, just a few steps away from the planetarium’s dome.

“Truly, I’m honored to have our names on the planetarium, but this is really Lowell’s legacy, because he really loves astronomy,” Nancy Lohman said. “… I’m so proud of what a learner he is.”

The planetarium was built in 2014 after the museum’s original flooded in 2009. In September 2019, the Lohmans, of Ormond Beach, donated $2.5 million to the museum’s endowment, a figure that was then tripled by a two-to-one endowment match by Cici and Hyatt Brown. The museum’s endowment currently stands at over $50 million, the press release states.

In May 2021, the Lohmans stepped up their support of the museum with the establishment of the Lohman’s Museum of Arts and Sciences Field Study, a program that will allow all Volusia County Schools fifth and eighth graders to visit MOAS over the next three years thanks to a $340,000 gift by the Lohmans to the FUTURES Foundation. The program launched in September, and so far, 2,800 eighth graders have participated.

ees, thanked the Lohmans for their contributions, as the planetarium is critical to the museum’s mission to inspire younger generations.

“I think of our staff and our supporters as our stars, and there’s something that shines brighter than stars — we heard it was Venus, but I really think it’s Lowell and Nancy Lohman tonight, and I’m so grateful for all that they have done,” Miller said.

MOAS Executive Director Andrew Sandall said they knew the planetarium was a special place when they built it in 2014. The old planetarium

could only do a couple of shows a day, and currently, they hold 30-35 shows a week in their planetarium.

Therefore, Sandall said they knew the naming rights to the building had to go to someone special as well.

“Sometimes the universe just aligns, and Lowell and Nancy were the right people,” Sandall said. “We’re proud to have their name on our planetarium. We’re proud to work with them because not only are they such great philanthropists and great community supporters, they are our biggest cheerleaders it’s possible to have.”

Lowell Lohman’s love of astronomy spans decades, but it wasn’t until 15 years ago that he was able to take a course on the subject at Daytona State College. He invited his late professor’s family to the ceremony due to the impact that course had on his life. During his speech, he took the time to thank everyone who played a part in making Lowell and Nancy Lohman Family Planetarium come to fruition.

“That doesn’t go unnoticed, and it’s a special night for Nancy and I, and the planetarium,” he said.

public opposition as more and more Ormond Beach residents become aware of this project and its negative impacts.

In 2004, both Bill Partington and Troy Kent were city commissioners when citizens packed City Hall to voice opposition to a proposed north-south runway extension.

That night, they withdrew their support of the runway extension and joined a 5-0 vote to abandon the project. Why? Partington and Kent, please explain why you now support airport runway extensions when public opposition has not changed.

A new pop-up exhibit by the Ormond Memorial Art Museum is now on display in the windows of 9 W. Granada Blvd.

Central Florida artist Kelley Batson-Howard’s series of acrylic oceanscapes are “meant to bring the viewer to a reminiscent place in time recalling a fond emotion,” according to a press release. Featured paintings in the exhibit include “Patience,” “Just Chill,” “Deep Blue Sea,” “Suede Blue Sea” and “Dune.”

Batson-Howard spent her childhood years drawing, doodling and taking art classes in high school in Anniston, Alabama, and had thoughts of becoming a fashion designer or graphic artist. She later traveled Europe and became enthralled by the artistic world, the press release details. Her artistic dreams were put on hold for many years, but in 2015, she returned to art by taking lessons to relieve stress, and later deciding to pursue painting full-time.

The Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail Corridor Management Organization held an educational hike through about 2 miles of rare scrub and coastal strand habitat at the North Peninsula State Park on Dec. 4.

According to an email, this is the organization’s 22nd hike along Scenic Loop trails since 2008. The hike was led by Dr. Don Spence, plant pathologist and certified master arborist, and Chris Schlageter, president of the Old Florida Conservation Inc. About 36 hikers joined and learned about the natural history of barrier island ecology and its response to natural and human pressures, salt marsh ecology and the benefits of salt marsh restoration, the science of natural shoreline construction, and how to identify native plants and trees.

The organization is planning to host another hike next spring.

12TH-ANNUAL SHOE DRIVE IS UNDERWAY Ormond Beach resident Matthew Monroe, a junior at Spruce Creek High School, is holding his 12th-annual shoe drive for Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that distributes shoes to those in need.

Monroe, who is enrolled in the IB program, has been collecting new and gently used shoes for the nonprofit since his sixth birthday.

Next year will be his last conducting the local shoe drive, and he’s hoping to share it with someone in the hopes of handing it off.

The museum board of directors recently created a program where, in exchange for a $100 donation, people are able to hand-paint a 4x4inch ceramic tile, which will then be fired and incorporated into the new Granada Garden Pavilion. According to OMAM’s newsletter, you can be

as creative as you’d like with your tile, and designs can range from a child’s tiny handprint to signatures or “more ambitious art endeavors.”

ANDY WARHOL PAINTING DONATED Thanks to a local retired advertising executive, the Marine Science Center at 100 Lighthouse Drive in Ponce Inlet will have one of artist Andy Warhol’s limited-edition screen prints, recently appraised at $41,000.

According to a press release by Volusia County, Jim Benedict, retired owner of Benedict Advertising and Marketing, is donating “Turtle 360A” to the center on behalf of his grandchildren Harrison, Cameron, Calla, Cael, Brynne, Britton, Scarlett and Behren. The signed print measures 39 inches wide by 31 inches deep,

and is one of 250 created by Warhol to coincide with the 1985 release of the film, “Turtle Diary.”

The print will be available for public viewing beginning Tuesday, Dec. 21.

The Marine Science Center treats and rehabilitates injured and sick sea turtles and birds. It is open 12-4 p.m. on Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Admission is $7 for seniors, $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12.

ACCIDENTALLY EGGED 8:01 p.m. — Intersection of South Beach Street and Reynolds Avenue Vandalism. A 23-year-old Daytona Beach driver contacted police after someone threw an object from a passing car, hitting his own vehicle and causing a chip in the paint. The driver told officers that he suspected the object was a beverage of some type, and estimated the damage at $600, though didn’t want to press charges.

The mystery of the object, however, was yet to be cracked.

Police were able to track down a phone number for the passing car’s registered owner. A couple hours after the incident, the 18-year-old suspect returned the officer’s call, and said that he had noticed a cracked egg in their new groceries, and threw that out of the car, but didn’t mean to hit another vehicle.

GRAVES DISTURBED 2:06 p.m. — 100 block of South Nova Road Vandalism. A local cemetery caretaker arrived at the Police Department to inform police that several flags and floral arrangements at his cemetery had been removed from grave sites and thrown on the ground the day before.

According to the police report, some of the flags were also taken from veterans’ graves and placed on non-veteran grave sites. The caretaker said everything was now back in place, but wanted to report the incident as they were unaware of who may have committed the crime. He indicated the cemetery would pursue charges if suspects were located.

Wildlife officials, now teaming with the state’s largest electric utility, have approved an unusual step of feeding manatees that face another winter of limited food supplies in Florida waters.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Power & Light Company announced combined efforts Wednesday, Dec. 8, to reduce manatee deaths that have reached a record level this year.

The state and federal agencies, which in November formed a Joint Incident Management Team to respond to the “unusual mortality event” along the state’s Atlantic coast, announced plans to use FPL’s Cape Canaveral Clean Energy Center in Brevard County as they conduct manatee rescues, recover carcasses, do health assessments and move forward with a short-term feeding trial.

“It is critical we help manatees in the short term with actions that are compatible with their long-term well-being and resilience,” Shannon Estenoz, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s assistant secretary for fish and wildlife and parks, said in a prepared statement.

The feeding program is aimed at reducing manatee deaths and the number of manatees that need to be rescued.

While feeding wildlife is discouraged, more than 1,000 manatees have died in Florida waters this year, about 15% of the population. The deaths have been caused in large part by a decline in seagrass beds that are prime winter foraging areas in the warm waters of the Indian River Lagoon.

Saying that Florida is “clicking on all cylinders,” Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday, Dec. 9, proposed an electionyear $99.7 billion budget that would funnel money to education, the environment and law-enforcement officers while giving motorists a temporary gas-tax break.

The proposal, which came as DeSantis runs for a second term, will be a starting point for lawmakers as they negotiate a spending plan during the legislative session that will start Jan. 11.

“This is something that is going to have very positive effects,” DeSantis said. “We are doing that while remaining the lowest per-capita tax burden in the country.”

The bottom line of DeSantis’ proposal would be about $2 billion less than the current year’s budget, according to the governor’s office. The current year budget, which took effect in July, became the state’s first $100 billion budget, at least in part because of a huge influx of federal money tied to the coronavirus pandemic.

The governor in recent weeks trickled out details of the budget, spurring Democrats to argue the plan should be more “people-centered.”

“The state’s budget should prioritize the everyday challenges facing the people across our state and reflect a commitment to the important partnership between the state and federal government that is needed for Florida and Floridians to thrive, not more double talk from the governor that only serves his political aspirations,” said Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, a Democratic candidate for governor, in a statement.

welve artists met face-to-face at the Frame of Mind parking lot on Friday, Dec.10, and battled with brushes for three, 20-minute rounds to prove who was the boss of the canvas. Only one came out victorious.

Art Battle is a global live art tournament, according to their website.

Twelve artists are selected from a combination of targeted and random call-to-artist submissions. The group is divided evenly, with each competing in the first and second rounds of the competition. Two artists from each round move on to the third and final round when a single winner is picked. Artists must create a work of art in 20 minutes each round.

Art Battle International takes place in an array of larger cities worldwide. From Miami to Los Angeles and Vancouver to London, these tournaments usually take place in interesting venues where the senses are tantalized by music, lights, an array of refreshments and the art itself. Patrons have the opportunity to watch the creative process unfold, then vote for their favorite artwork through a texting platform.

Theresa Lieberman, vice president of the Ormond Beach Arts District and founder of Imagine Daytona LLC, was pleased when she acquired a license to hold Art Battle tournaments in the Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach area.

“We are the smallest market they have given a license to,” she said.

“We wanted to bring the Art Battle to Ormond Beach since it is on the cusp of the arts. It’s a well-known art community in Volusia County and we want to help grow that potential.”

Lieberman handles the operations, promotions and marketing while her business partner, artist Angel Lowden, is responsible for the “experience” and choosing the artists who participate in the Art Battle.

Lowden was introduced to the sportlike art competition in 2018 when she applied and was invited to participate in two Art Battles in Jacksonville. A multitude of friends, including Victoria Jones, owner of Frame of Mind, and partner Ryan Smith, went to support Lowden.

“It was so much fun,” she said.

“Everyone thought this is amazing. We’ve got to get this to Ormond Beach somehow. So it’s been a goal to get Art Battle going here in this area for a few years now.”

Artists invited to attend the first Art Battle Ormond Beach were: John Berglund, Rachel Caldwell, Eva Capulli, Sandy Fraser, Victoria Gomez Mayol, Miguel Hine, Ryan Houman, Julia Marshall, Perego, Barbara Saunders, Ryan Smith and L.C. Tobey. Capulli, Gomez Mayol, Houman and Smith received the top votes and moved on to the third and final round where Gomez Mayol won.

Gomez Mayol drove from Sarasota to compete, where she won an Art Battle in 2019 before COVID hit and made it impossible for her to compete at the next level. She will now compete at the state level in Sarasota.

“To prepare, I try to paint in increments of 20 minutes for practice,” she said. “When I compete, I put on my music play list and get in the right mood.”

This is the first of five Art Battles to be held in the Ormond and Daytona Beach area. The next battle will be held at the inaugural Daytona Beach Art Festival on April 9 in downtown Daytona Beach. The spring event will be an art immersive experience where the Art Battle will be a perfect fit.

“My goal is to bring art to our area and make it an art community,” Lieberman said. “I want to help with the economic revitalization, collaborate and get creative with our community.”

by Fletcher’s Irish Pub owner Bill Fletcher, to benefit childhood cancer patients.

She was particularly excited about that 51-year-old mustache. Knox had

The second program is for Flagler and Volusia childhood cancer families who will be home for Christmas.

“We are granting Christmas gift wishes for the cancer child and all of their siblings,” Fulling said. Parents also receive gift cards. Leftover funds support Bags of Hope that are brought to the hospital throughout the year.

Fulling’s father had an extreme attachment to his mustache and was nervous, but was excited to shave it off for a great cause.

Additional supporters expressed their excitement for the beard-shaving as well. Jeremy Pappa and Brad Ford have been regulars at Fletcher’s Irish Pub for years, and have followed Fletcher ever since his move to the new location. They each enjoy how they look with a beard and consider it part of their trademark, but with the amazing cause at stake, they were stoked to make the change.

Both were members of fundraising team Thundercats and reached out to friends and family by way of social media months prior to the event.

grooming his beard ever since his retirement from the Army and considered it a treat not to have to shave anymore. His wife was relieved to see the beard gone and is excited for the new and improved Tim. Another shaver, Tre Topping, had

grown his beard out since his junior year in high school and was emotional when he saw himself for the first time without it.

Fletcher said he plans to continue the tradition and have another Shave for the Brave in 2022.

Isabella Ward is a big believer in manifesting.

And when it came to appearing on the big screen for the 2021 remake of “West Side Story,” that’s exactly what she did.

Ward, a native of Ormond Beach, was selected out of 50,000 people to be one of the Shark dancers in the movie directed by Steven Spielberg, which released in theaters on Friday, Dec. 10. When open calls were announced in 2018 for the roles of Anita and Maria, Ward — who was part of the national Broadway tour of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” at the time — decided to begin submitting videos because, even though she didn’t fit the mold for either of the roles, she knew then she would be a great member of the dance ensemble.

Nothing came of it, but Ward didn’t give up.

“I never thought a movie of this caliber — this iconic movie — would ever be made again,” Ward said. “It’s just kind of one of those things you grow up thinking it’s never going to be touched again because the original was just perfection. And then Steven Spielberg comes along.”

Later that year, she attended the first open call for ensemble dancers in New York City. Ward woke up at 3 a.m. and stood in the rain for hours until she was finally seen around 3 p.m. But unfortunately, the audition didn’t go as she’d hoped. One of

the dancers in her group got too close to Ward, and Ward was struck in the face and fell down onstage.

She didn’t get a callback.

But again, Ward didn’t give up. When her family informed her that auditions were taking place in Puerto Rico, where Ward is originally from, she flew down and gave it another shot. This time, she was noticed during the auditions and received several callbacks.

Then on the flight back to New York, she ended up sitting next to the film’s choreographer, Justin Peck.

“There were so many serendipitous signs, and from there it kind of just started taking off,” Ward said.

In April 2019, Ward found out she’d made the ensemble and would play the character of Tere. A couple of months later, they began shooting.

The experience of being part of the film, she said, was “beyond my wildest imaginations.”

One of the best things about watching Spielberg at work was seeing his treatment of the cast, she said. He treated them like a family, and every

Sunday, he’d rent out a private screening room so he could show them a movie that he thought was important for them to know about.

For Ward, it was like attending a master class.

She always knew she had a passion for making movies. Growing up in Ormond Beach, the Spruce Creek High School alumna trained at the European School of Performing Arts before training with the Orlando Ballet. She later graduated from Rollins College before moving to Scotland to attend the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she received her master’s degree in musical theater performance.

There were many decisions she made in her life that took her far away from where she is now — living her dream in Los Angeles and pursuing acting. But that was the path that led her to the present, and for Ward, “West Side Story” embodies her hard work, and manifesting, coming together.

“We’re just dancing and singing our heart out,” Ward said. “You’ll definitely catch me flying by.”

Winning ways Sandcrabs girls soccer team blows past DeLand 7-1.

The Lady Sandcrabs feel confident going into their game against Spruce Creek Dec. 16, on senior night.

he Seabreeze Sandcrabs girls soccer team came out kicking against the DeLand Bulldogs Tuesday, Dec. 14, leaving the pitch with a score of 7-1 and adding one more to their win streak for 4 and 6 wins total.

Annabel Thistle launched the barrage a few minutes into the game, leaving the first half with two goals under her cleats. Goals by Brianna Chesley and Emily Myers wrapped up the half at 4-1.

“We definitely improved our passing,” Isabella Castillo said. “We were working together as a team.”

Head coach Eli Freidus motivated the team to stay vigilant on the field even in the face of a positive score.

“They will probably get physical,” he said. “That’s what happens when frustration sets in. Don’t fall into that trap. That will take you out of the game. We are

better than that.”

Within two minutes of the second half’s start, Myers scored, and Caroline “Carl” McNerny followed on her heels with another goal. Taylor Hughes added to the final rout, helping the Sandcrabs finish the game 7-1.

Seabreeze faces Spruce Creek Thursday, Dec. 16, on senior night.

The school is considered one of their toughest opponents.

“I just think if we can build off of what we started here, it will make a huge difference,” assistant coach Christine Goebel said. “We need to continue to play how we know how and how we practice.”

“We are determined to finally end their winning streak against us,” Kara Valentine said. “We are going to try our hardest to play as good as we did tonight to beat them.”
