Ormond projects get state funding Ormond Beach will be receiving over $2 million in state funds as part of the recently signed Florida budget for two projects.

The first is $1.5 million for the city’s Water Reclamation Facility Ultraviolet Disinfection Conversion project, which is budgeted to cost a total of $2.7 million, according to the city. The installation of an ultraviolet light treatment system will help with reducing the use of chemials to treat effluent that will be distributed as reclaimed water.

The second project is a $1.6 million septic tank conversion project for Magnolia Drive, Oak Drive and Bonita Avenue. The state budget allocated $532,000 toward this project, which seeks to convert 76 homes from septic tanks to city sewer.

The city states this will benefit the water quality of Misner’s Branch, which is a tributary of the Tomoka River.

“We were so fortunate to receive those grants by the governor and certainly Rep. Tom Leek carried the ball on this one and brought us to the finish line,” City Manager Joyce Shanahan said.

Water projects dominate CIP The city of Ormond Beach is planning $10.08 million worth of water and wastewater projects in its FiveYear Capital Improvement Program for fiscal years 2022-2023 through 2026-2027, a figure which includes significant rehabilitations to its water reclamation facility and increase in reclaim water storage.

The commission reviewed the proposed CIP projects during a workshop on Tuesday, June 7. Mayor Bill Partington said the city has dealt with water issues for about two decades.

“I told our staff I want to have the absolute best water program, whether it’s potable water, reclaim water, sewer, stormwater,” he said.

“I think our residents expect to have the absolute best water all the way around.”

One of the most expensive water projects in the CIP plan is a $2.4 million rehabilitation of several process components of the Water Reclamation Facility, including itis master lift station pump and controls. This was identified as a need by the city’s consultant, Mead Hunt, in 2020.

To comply with the recently adopted Senate Bill 64, which mandates a full reduction of effluent discharged into water bodies by 2032, the city has also proposed a $700,000 project to purchase a site for a reclaimed water storage reservoir, tank and pumping facilities.

During a workshop on May 17, commissioners directed city staff to proceed with the acquisition of a 147-acre site within Ormond Crossings. The city estimates the site could provide about 100 million gallons of reclaim water storage; it currently only has a capacity of 10 million gallons.

Final plat approved The Ormond Beach City Commission unanimously approved a final plat for Tiger Oaks, Phase 1A of Plantation Oaks.

The plat consists of 121 single-family homes on 100.91 acres, according to a city memo. The final plat is the last step of the city’s subdivision approval process.

so that we can take the steps to being able to store the water that we aren’t using on a day like you may have later this summer where you have a lot of rain,” Public Works Director Shawn Finley said.

Finley said this one project will likely get the city to a position where it isn;t discharging any effluent into the Halfax River.

Additionally, a $2.85 million project to replace lime softening filters at the city’s wastewater treatment plant was included. According to the CIP plan, the old filter structures, pipe gallery and clearwell were abandoned in 2008 and could become a safety hazard if ignored.

Other big ticket items in the city’s CIP plan include a $1.63 million

renovation project for the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center — to be funded by county ECHO grant dollars, city general fund reserves and donations from the Friends of the PAC — as well as $1.1 million construction of a secondary access road from Pineland Trail to the city’s Airport Business Park.

The city is also looking to add electric vehicle charging stations, likely at City Hall and at The Casements, as part of its Community Redevelopment Agency improvements.

The charging stations, to cost $70,000, would be paid for using CRA dollars.

Commissioners expressed an interest in implementing a fee for users to charge their vehicles.

The City Commission also approved the adoption of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update.

The plan outlines improvements to the city’s parks and recreation assets to meet the needs of current and future residents, according to a city memo.

Among the top priority actions are providing safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and acquiring land for preservation.

Driven to serve

Boys & Girls Clubs helped shape Emma Sanders’ aspirations BRENT WORONOFF STAFF WRITER

Emma Sanders has been compelled to serve others ever since she joined the Flagler County Boys & Girls Club 22 years ago.

Sanders was the first member of the Flagler club, joining when she was 11 years old. She had to forge her mother’s signature to get in.

“You’re supposed to take the membership paper home and get your parents to fill it out,” she said.

“But my mother was asleep during the day, and she was up at night, so I forged her signature.”

The club, and unit director Hugh Brown, came along at the right time in Sanders’ life. She grew up in Bunnell in a broken home. Home, itself, would change locations.

“I would live with my grandmother this year, or my aunt’s house, or a family friend, or someone that was nice to me in the community. That was what home life was like,” she said.

Sanders would walk to the Carver Center after school and feel safe. It was the constancy she needed. And Brown became the father figure she didn’t have.

“With his personality, Mr. Brown brought more kids in, and me, being a person who talks a lot, spread the word,” Sanders said. “He grew it so we would have mentors come out.

There would be different classes on substance misuse and peer pressure.

There was a power hour so you could get your homework done. It was recreational as well, but they also tried to give kids tools and skills.”

Sanders quickly became a leader.

When she was a freshman in high school she became the youngest person to be named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties’ Youth of the Year. In fact, she was too young to compete for the statewide honor with a college scholarship as the prize.

That same year, at age 15, she got her first job as a youth development worker for the club. She went on to graduate from Bethune-Cookman University with a degree in sociology. Today, she is a domestic violence outreach and prevention specialist for the Beacon Center in Ormond Beach.

"There was always something special about (Sanders). I like to think we brought that out of her. She really wants to be in the business of saving lives.

I'm really proud of her."

LOCAL GROWTH

Joe Sullivan has been the chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties since the first local club was founded in 1992. The organization is celebrating its 30 anniversary this year.

Sullivan has known Sanders since she became Flagler’s charter member.

“There was always something special about her. I like to think we brought that out of her,” he said.

“She really wants to be in the business of saving lives. I’m really proud of her.”

Like Sanders, Sullivan was a member of a Boys & Girls Club himself as a youngster. He grew up in Minneapolis in the 1960s.

“My mom was a single parent,” he said. “She was a nurse who worked from 3 to 11. My brother and I were latchkey kids before there was a name for it. We spent a lot of time (with the club).”

Sullivan got a job with the organization in 1980 and he has been working for Boys & Girls Clubs of America ever since. He helped build the Volusia/Flagler organization from the ground up. He had no full-time staff for the first four years and ran the Deltona club himself.

“I’ve always felt more comfortable in gym shorts than a suit and tie,” he said. “I’m probably a little more comfortable working with the kids than grant writing.”

There are eight clubs now in Volusia and Flagler counties — Holly Hill, Daytona Beach, Deltona, DeLand, Lake Helen, New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Flagler. The clubs are open every day after school and all day during the summer. The eight clubs serve over 1,000 kids.

“No one’s in a better position (than the Boys & Girls Clubs) helping kids and families that need it most,” Sullivan said.

FULL CIRCLE?

The Flagler club is now based at Rymfire Elementary School and has over 100 youth members. Carolyn Thompson is Flagler’s unit director. Simone Gonzalez is the program specialist. Malik Murray, 15, has been a member for eight years. He was named Flagler’s Youth of the Year, and got to speak at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties’ Steak & Steak Gala on June 2 at the Hilton Daytona Beach. Murray said

he spoke about his grandmother, who died in 2018.

“I always talked to her about deep stuff,” he said. “The Boys & Girls Club helped me cope.”

Sanders would like to see a second club open in Flagler County, closer to some of the disadvantaged youth in the Bunnell area. Sullivan would like to see that happen too.

“We want to open another club up here,” he said as he checked in on the club at Rymfire on June 6. “I’d love for Emma to run it, but I don’t think I can afford her.”

The idea does appeal to Sanders, who spoke passionately about the Boys & Girls Clubs at the Steak & Steak Gala, the organization’s annual fund-raising event that drew 700 people.

Sanders works in Volusia County, but she still lives in Bunnell and does what she can for the community, hosting trunk and treats, giving away meals at Christmas and haircuts for kids at school. She’d like to do more.

“I do want to give back here,” she said. “You want to make sure we’re getting those kids who are kind of left out and needing somewhere to go or

a safe place to be. The Boys & Girls Clubs help kids dream. You get to go places you never thought you could go. You get invited to golf tournaments. You learn how to play tennis.

Lifelong impact: Paul DePalma receives free AI reading device The Jewish Federation was given an OrCam MyEye device to help the blind.

Imagine a device that, with just the point of your finger, could read aloud the words your eyes cannot see. It would impact almost every aspect of your daily life.

And for Paul DePalma, a graduate of the Conklin Davis Center for the Visually Impaired, the OrCam MyEye device will do just that.

“I did some research on it, and it’s pretty amazing,” DePalma said.

Developed by OrCam Technologies, an Israel-based company that develops artificial intelligence devices to help the visually impaired, the OrCam MyEye is a voice-activated device that is able to be attached to any pair of eyeglasses, and can read text from books, phones, or other surfaces to help people live more independently. According to the company, the OrCam MyEye device also recognizes people’s faces, identifies objects such as doors, colors and more, all offline. It costs $4,250.

The Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties found themselves in possession of this device thanks to one of their local donors, Margaret Harrison, who had been interested by the fact the device was made in Jerusalem.

“I said, ‘Well, if you can get one, I know the perfect place for it,’” said Marvin Miller, president of the Jewish Federation.

He and his wife, Phyllis, had seen the device featured before on “Dr. Phil,” and she had a special connection with the Conklin Davis Center.

About 40 years ago, Phyllis Miller was a volunteer at the center and served on the board for a time while

the center was under the direction of its co-founder, Kathy Davis. The Conklin Davis Center, located at 405 White St., serves over 500 blind and visually impaired people in Volusia, Flagler, Putnam and Brevard counties.

Once Marvin Miller was in possession of the OrCam MyEye device, that inspired him to approach Conklin Davis Center board member Nancy Epps. He hopes that with support of the community, more devices can be donated in the future to help the center’s students and graduates.

“Being part of the Jewish Federation, part of what we do is we support Israel, and getting this made in Jerusalem and coming back to support people in vision made us doubly proud,” Marvin Miller said.

When DePalma found out he would be the first recipient affiliated with the Conklin Center to receive the OrCam MyEye, the first word that went through his mind was “Wow.” As someone who is legally blind, DePalma said he’s looking forward to using it daily for things such as reading his mail as well as recipes — he likes to cook. Previously, he used a closed circuit television video magnifier, or CCTV, but it wasn’t as practical.

“It was so bulky,” DePalma said.

“It was so big, and it was always in my way, and I wanted something a little smaller.”

Mark Lawson, supported employment supervisor at the Conklin Davis Center, has known DePalma since he

was a student at the center in 2017.

Lawson assisted him with obtaining employment, and continues to assist with helping him continue to live independently after he graduated in 2018. It’s of the center’s promises to its clients — that they will be supported throughout the rest of their life, and it’s made possible through community donations, as this is not funded by the state.

“It’s a rarity that an organization will do lifelong services unpaid,” Lawson said.

DePalma was determined by Lawson to be a good candidate for the OrCam MyEye device because he felt like it would help him in his employment as well. DePalma is a general assembler for LCI, a local manufacturer. He was offered a job after his first interview with them. It made

him feel overwhelmed, he said.

DePalma thanked the donor, Harrison, though she was not present at the time he received the device.

“We are thrilled that it’s here,” Marvin Miller said. “And we look forward to Paul using it and helping others get it. We will promise you that we will have others behind this.”

The Jewish Federations absorbs all of its administrative costs, and 100% of donations are used to help the community. Volusia OKs Dixie Ridge community rezoning

More homes will be built along the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail.

On Tuesday, June 6, the Volusia County Council approved a future land use amendment and a rezoning of two adjacent parcels totaling 64.1 acres located on the west side of Old Dixie Highway in a 5-1 vote. Volusia County Councilwoman Heather Post was absent.

The development, known as Dixie Ridge, is located in unincorporated Volusia County north of the Ormond Beach city limit, and the parcel is part of the National Gardens Development of Regional Impact that was approved in 1986 and amended in 2002 to reduce the maximum units.

With only 166 vested units remaining in the DRI, the project’s engineer — Parker Mynchenberg — sought approval to build 144 single-

family units in Dixie Ridge, with all access into the property being through the Halifax Plantation subdivision; there will be no access to Dixie Ridge from Old Dixie Highway.

The landowners also agreed to donate 13.21 acres along Old Dixie Highway to the county for a public park. It connects to the 36 acres Mynchenberg sold to the county last year, which the county hopes eventually becomes part of a Florida state park trail system.

Prior to Tuesday’s approval, 64 homes could be built on the two parcels, including 20 lots that had an existing preliminary plat, approved by the county in 2006.

The council approved a future land use amendment from Rural to Urban Low Intensity, and a rezoning from Rural Agricultural Estate and Urban Single-Family Residential to a Planned Unit Development.

Brower, the lone vote against the project, said that he gets daily requests to reduce density and have less development, especially in the Loop. “[DRIs] have been going on for many years, and things change over many years,” Brower said. “Part of what’s changed is the public’s attitude. We represent the public, and we have to consider that.”

The state eliminated DRI requirements in 2018, but existing ones were allowed to continue, according to county

documents.

Brower said he was against the project because he felt the density was too high for the area.

Mynchenberg countered that Dixie Ridge was slated to be a low-density residential development, per zoning standards, as the lots are proposed to be clustered and the development is preserving wetlands, in addition to the donation of a park for tree preservation. Low-impact development standards also promote clustered housing.

He also pointed out that there had been no public opposition to the project at the county’s Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission meeting.

“I think what we need to do is not look a gift horse in the mouth here,” County Councilman Danny Robins said.

“And also what we need to do is learn how to compromise a little bit better.”

He said that after the county’s purchase of the 36 acres in Plantation Oaks, the county ended up increasing the density of the Loop since Mynchenberg went back to the city to amend his development order.

Mynchenberg’s request to add 163 to the subdivision was approved by the City Commission on May 17.

“At the end of the day, we may not like it, but this can be a ... lot worse,” said Robins.

He added that government lacks consistency when considering development proposals, and that the council should have considered that before they bought the 36 acres of land in the Loop for preservation. When one accommodation is granted, others want similar attention; he compared it to people taking advantage of the #MeToo movement. “... We have to pick a direction and not keep flip-flopping on issues.”

Brower said he was being consistent with the voters he represents and their instruction to not keep developing in the same manner.

“I think we need to consider a little consistency for the voters as well,” he said.

County Councilwoman Barb Girtman said she appreciated Brower asking questions and trying to see if there was another way to develop the project, but added that the county is not going to be able to say no to building.

“We can say, ‘How do we go forward? What’s the best way forward, and who are the best partners to go forward with?

Who’s making concessions and making a difference?’”

Girtman said. “I think this project, although it is challenging because it is more (housing), I think there have been concessions made, and I too feel better that there’s not a crowded room standing against it.”

Marine Science Center turns 20 years old The Marine Science Center has had more than 1.2 million visitors, while caring for more than 23,000 sea turtles and 2,000 other reptiles.

It began as a dream. A spark of environmental consciousness that spread like wildfire throughout Volusia County in the mid-1990s.

Sea turtle volunteers planted the seed when they started discussing the possibility of building an environmental education center that would care for the many sick and injured sea turtles and seabirds they found along the beach.

It would have another benefit: The center would satisfy requirements for the county’s incidental take permit and habitat conservation plan, which set specific standards and restrictions for vehicles on the beach.

They found support in the Volusia County Council, with environmental advocates like Pat Northey, Frank Bruno and Big John leading the charge.

The County Council gave the

visionary project the green light in 1997 and assigned staff to spearhead it.

Volusia County Parks and Recreation employees John Crisp and Tim Baylie moved the project along, researching other facilities, making plans, and overseeing the design and construction of the 5,300-square-foot “Florida Cracker style” building. They also began soliciting the $2.2 million that would be needed, with $1 million each coming from the Ponce de Leon Inlet Port Authority and the Florida Inland Navigational District.

The communitywide dream came to fruition with the opening of the Marine Science Center in the shadow of the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse on June 8, 2002.

During the first six months, more than 27,000 visitors toured the environmental center, and staff cared for 29 sea turtles.

The Marine Science Center opened the Mary Keller Seabird Rehabilitation Sanctuary on June 19, 2004, to care for sick and injured birds. It was dedicated to Mary Keller, the area’s unofficial bird lady, who had cared for some 40,000 sick birds in her home for four decades.

As they celebrate the Marine Science Center’s 20th anniversary, employees have created a display detailing the center’s history. But they remain focused on their No.

1 responsibility: treating the turtles and seabirds that are entrusted to their care. As far as humans go, the goal is a bit different.

“We hope our visitors will leave with a better appreciation for marine life and become better stewards of the environment,” said Chad Macfie, who took over as Marine Science Center manager from Michael Brothers in 2018. “Often it’s as simple as properly disposing of fishing line and not throwing plastic bags and bottles on the beach.”

In the past 20 years, the Marine Science Center has hosted and educated more than 1.2 million visitors, while caring for more than 23,000 sea turtles and 2,000 other

reptiles. The seabird rehab facility has treated more than 19,000 birds since 2004.

The Friends of the Marine Science Center is planning a campaign to raise funds that will be used to support sea turtle and seabird rehabilitation efforts.

The Marine Science Center is open to the public at 100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet.

Visitors may view the turtle hospital and explore a marine display area and gift shop from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It is closed to the public on Mondays.

A TEST OF STRENGTH? 2:20 p.m. — 1600 block of West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach Disorderly intoxication. Police received a call regarding a disorderly person, and upon their arrival at a local gas station, spotted a 28-year-old Ormond Beach man yelling profanities and chasing people in the parking lot.

The man, carrying an open container of Natty Daddy beer, screamed profanities at police officers, saying “he was stronger” than them and that his whole family was in the U.S. Marines.

Marijuana was also found on the man’s person. He was taken to jail.

BEING A GOOD CITIZEN 3:07 p.m. — First block of South Beach Street, Ormond Beach Vandalism. The reporting officer met with a 78-year-old Ormond Beach man, who said he had ran over the wooden block with his truck the day before and gotten a flat tire as a result. He said he wanted to prevent the same thing from happening to others, and that there were large nails poking out of where the wooden block was. He pointed out where the nails had now been hammered into the ground.

The man told the officer he had removed the block with a hammer as a “good citizen.”

The officer informed the man that this was done on city property and that he could be liable for damages.

The officer showed a city employee the damages and informed him of what had occurred; the employee said the city wouldn’t pursue charges and that they would clean up the damages.

JUNE 1

FUEL STOLEN 1:57 p.m. — 100 block of North U.S. 1, Ormond Beach Larceny. Police arrived at a local gas station after receiving a call regarding the theft of $3,700 worth of diesel.

Video surveillance footage revealed two drivers attaching an unknown device to their respective pumps that opened the valves, allowing them to steal the diesel. In doing so, the suspects damaged the wiring in the pumps. The manager told police this will cost the gas station between $1,500 to $3,000. The store wished to pursue charges.

JUNE 3

ODDS NOT IN HIS FAVOR 2:06 a.m. — 2000 block of Grove Avenue, Bunnell Possession of drug paraphernalia. A 24-year-old Bunnell man was stopped by police for riding his bicycle on the wrong side of the road.

He also had no lights on his bicycle.

The reporting officer noted in an arrest report that the man was with two “other subjects who are known drug users,” and that the trio attempted to accelerate away from law enforcement prior to being stopped.

When asked if he was in possession of any drugs, the man hesitated and glanced at his right pocket before he said, “no.” He emptied his pockets, and the reporting officer saw a cut straw and a glass pipe with burnt residue.

The residue in the glass pipe tested positive for methamphetamine. He was taken to jail.

JUNE 5

TOO TIRED TO DRIVE 3:33 p.m. — Intersection of Whipporwill Drive and Whiteview Parkway, Palm Coast Possession of fentanyl. A deputy was responding to a call of a man sleeping in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, which was stopped on the

side of the roadway. The man, a 32-year-old Palm Coast man, told deputies that he was passed out because he was tired.

Deputies observed drug paraphernalia “in plain view” inside the car, according to the man’s arrest report. The man was then secured in handcuffs, and when asked about the paraphernalia, he said he was told narcotics would help him with pain, and that he had smoked some heroin and meth that morning.

A small plastic bag with fentanyl was found inside the car, in addition to other drugs.

While being transported to jail, the man offered to give the deputy information on “two big time busts” if he released him. The deputy declined, and the man began kicking the inside of the car.

He was taken to jail.

JUNE 6

FRANTIC PARANOIA 4:58 a.m. — 2000 block of Commerce Parkway, Bunnell Carrying a concealed weapon. A 36-year-old Palm Coast woman was waving her hands “frantically” over head and holding a pink purse as she ran toward a deputy’s patrol vehicle, according to the woman’s arrest report. The woman told the deputy that she was unsure if people were in her car and admitted that she had just taken molly.

The woman asked the deputy to check her car and handed over her keys because she didn’t know if “people were after her,” her arrest report states. When asked if she had any weapons on her person, the woman said she had a set of “metallic knuckles” in her pink purse.

She pointed to her car, which had its driver’s side door ajar and had several items — two blankets and a cooler — scattered outside it.

Deputies found cocaine inside her vehicle. She was taken to jail.

NHC: Hurricane season will be active EMERGENCY INFORMATION

On June 1, the first day of hurricane season, Flagler County Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord held an informal briefing with the media in the Emergency Operations Center. On one of the big screens behind him was a map with an ‘X’ marking a system near the Yucatan Peninsula and a coned path stretching to Florida.

The system, which became the first tropical depression of the season (TD1) — and by June 5, the first named storm (Alex) — was certainly not a good omen more than two months before the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

“There were 21 named storms last year, and this year is supposed to be an active season again,” Lord advised.

On May 24, the National Hurricane Center predicted 14 to 21 named storms, 6 to 10 hurricanes and 3 to 6 major hurricanes this year. The 30-year average has been 14 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

son. The La Nina climate pattern of cool Pacific waters could strengthen storms in the Atlantic. The loop current is warming water in the Gulf of Mexico. On the other hand, Saharan dust plumes reaching the state can decrease chances of hurricanes.

“All of those things can have no impact. But they all can raise or decrease hurricane potential,” Lord said.

The Emergency Management team has met with all personnel that may be assigned to the EOC during an emergency. The team also purchased additional supplies using grant funds and updated the WebEOC disaster management system.

Lord stressed how important it is for residents to make their own preparations.

“It’s super important that residents understand what they need to do to protect their homes and know if they’re in an evacuation zone,” he said.

Everyone should be prepared to be off the grid for up to a week after a hurricane, he said.

Hurricane kits should include a gallon of water per person and pet per day, non-perishable food, seven days of medications, spare clothes and old linens and an AM/FM radio.

The disaster preparedness sales tax holiday ends on June 10.

The county is continuing its partnership with Flagler Schools, using Bunnell Elementary and Buddy Taylor/Wadsworth for shelters. Rymfire Elementary is the special needs shelter. The Florida Department of Health in Flagler County provides nurses for the special needs shelter.

Emergency Management asks those with special needs to register ahead of time.

Lord said the shelters won’t be going to enhanced spacing this year after the past two years of COVID-19 protocols. But they will have masks and test kits to pass out on request.

“We have all that stuff we bought.

We want to make sure people are comfortable,” he said.

The county is transitioning from the A through F evacuation zones, which confused some Palm Coast residents who live in lettered sections. This will be the last year that the zones will be used, but specific neighborhoods and landmarks will also be included in all evacuation orders.

Lord noted that the National Hurricane Center’s cone paths are becoming narrower as the center becomes more confident with their forecasts.

“The cones get smaller every few years,” he said. “But what’s hardest to predict is the the intensity of the storms. It could hit warm water just before landfall,” he said.

Deputies borrow a boat to apprehend a jet ski thief A resident of Ormond Beach loaned his boat to Volusia County deputies on June 5 to help them catch a man accused of trying to steal a jet ski.

The deputies were called to assist the Ormond Beach Police Department at Cassen Park Boat ramp with the alleged theft on the Intracoastal Waterway at marker 21.

Edited body camera video posted by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook shows deputies asking the Ormond man to borrow his boat, cruising out into the Intracoastal, and then finding a man sitting on a jet ski.

At first aiming a gun at the man, the deputy began talking with him and then lowered the gun. Deputies tossed a rope to the man, later identified as Ronald Williams, who said he couldn’t swim and didn’t have any weapons with him.

Williams, who is homeless, told deputies he was not able to get the engine started, according to the incident report.

“So you are going to take a jet ski and you don’t know how to swim?” a deputy said in the video.

Williams was taken into custody without incident, and the jet ski was returned to its owner.

Deputies then thanked the boat owner for lending them the boat.

While the Sheriff’s Office has boats, there wasn’t one available at the time, according to a VCSO spokesperson. VCSO helicopter Air One also assisted.

Ormond’s ‘Motor Officer of the Year’ Ormond Beach Police Officer Rick Taylor was selected on May 19, as the 2021 Motor Officer of the Year by the Goldwing Road Riders Association Chapter FL 1-H. According to a press release, the ceremony was held at the RiverGrille on the Tomoka restaurant. In attendance was Sen. Tom Wright, who presented Taylor with a proclamation.

Teens arrested for armed robbery charge Keyshawn Davis, 19, was arrested after the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 504 S. Church St., in Bunnell, for Robbery with a Weapon for an incident that occurred the day prior, where the victim reported being beaten and robbed by Davis at the Carver Gym in Bunnell.

On Thursday afternoon, May 26, the Sheriff’s 911 Dispatch Center received a call from a male advising he was robbed while at the Carver Gym and the Bunnell Police Department responded. The victim reported that two Black males took his phone and money from his pockets and one of the males pistol-whipped him during the incident. The investigation was launched and turned over to the FCSO Major Case Unit.

Davis’ criminal history in Flagler dates back to 2020. This is the sixth time he is being jailed. He’s facing charges for Robbery with a Weapon and being held on $100,000 bond.

Late Thursday, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 14-yearold for his involvement in the incident as well. The teen is no stranger to law enforcement, with a criminal history dating back to 2020, when he was just 12 years old.

In 2018, Jessica and Thomas James Foreman thought it was time to take their business a step further.

As self-described foodies, and owners of international soul food catering company Sauté Kingz by Chef Count, the Foremans watched the Food Network regularly. They had recently begun competing in local food competitions — including Ormond Beach’s King of the Grille, in which they placed second in the People’s Choice Category in 2019, the last time the competition was held — and Jessica Foreman decided to start applying to appear on TV competitions.

The Foremans have always wanted

a food truck, so they decided to go forward and try to appear on “The Great Food Truck Race,” a show where teams compete in a race to win $50,000.

They went through the application and casting process three times, including once right before the pandemic where they thought they were on the verge of achieving their goal, before the Foremans, with their son Jesshuan, were finally accepted to participate in season 15, which began airing on Monday, June 5.

“It was a great feeling, because even to be accepted on that platform (the Food Network) felt like an accomplishment, because you are in competition on a nationwide platform,” said Thomas James Foreman, who also goes by Chef Count.

“There’s people applying from so many states for this and to know that we had gotten that far, it was mindblowing.”

man — especially after almost five years of trying to get casted.

“You’ve got to understand sometimes it’s not your time,” she said.

“But, be persistent, and we always worked on our craft.”

And it was their craft, their love of food, that brought the Foremans together in the first place.

They met in the late ’90s in a Mexican restaurant in Ormond Beach they both used to work at, called Don Pablo.

Later, the couple moved to Orlando. Thomas James Foreman began working as a private chef in Downtown Disney (now called Disney Springs), and Jessica Foreman worked at a cafe in nearby Celebration. They moved back to Daytona around 2008 and began their catering service as Thomas James Foreman attended culinary school, establishing a Sauté Kingz catering kitchen in Holly Hill in 2008.

But it was street vending that Jessica Foreman said redefined their business, particularly their live sauté station.

“It’s focused on the live cooking element,” Thomas James Foreman said.

Their catering kitchen is now located at 200 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Daytona Beach, where they also train local children in the community with free kids cooking classes.

For the Foremans on the show, it was a different experience working from inside a food truck.

“We’ve never worked in a food truck; we’ve never owned one,” Jessica Foreman said. “So for us, this is a new experience.”

That’s hasn’t stopped them before, though. When the Foremans began their business, they knew their model was a bit “unorthodox.”

“We started as street vendors,” Jessica Foreman said. “We’ve been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years, and I always tell people to never give up on their dream, no matter what.”

Volusia County receives grants for 19 community AEDs Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, and more than 356,000 cases occur outside hospital walls each year.

About 90% of victims die before they reach a hospital, making rapid response essential. Survival rates increase dramatically when care, including CPR and treatment with an automated external defibrillator, is provided within five to seven minutes.

To help improve survival rates, Volusia County’s Public Protection Department is using grant funds to donate 19 portable AEDs to community organizations. So far, the department has provided AEDs and training to the Spruce Creek Fly-in, Burns Science and Technology Charter School, Four Townes Moose Lodge and the DeLand Elks Lodge.

Administered promptly and properly, the device can restore a normal heart rhythm by delivering an electrical shock across the person’s chest.

“AEDs can mean the difference between life and death,” said Mark Swanson, interim director of Public Protection. “Without immediate CPR and defibrillation, the victim loses consciousness, becomes unresponsive and dies. Chances of survival diminish by 7-10% for each minute without treatment. After 10 minutes, resuscitation efforts rarely succeed.”

Swanson noted that AEDs are designed so people with little or no training can use them. Once activated, an AED will play instructions out loud for how to use it. However, Swanson’s staff is providing onsite, detailed training to staff at each location.

The cost of an AED ranges from $1,300 to $1,700. The Public Protection Department received grants from the Florida Department of Health and Emergency Medical Services Trust Funds to cover the equipment costs.

“The theme of Preservation Month 2022 is ‘People Saving Places’ and the leadership and congregation of Historic New Bethel AME Church have been an outstanding Ormond Beach example of people saving places since the church was constructed,” OBHS President Bonda Garrison said.

The church was formed in 1885, by a small group of people gathered in a wooden building on a dirt road that would be later be named Yonge Street. The current building was built in 1926 from concrete blocks formed by the parishioners.

Delta Life Fitness hosts Ormond’s first ‘Sweat with a Vet’ event ALEXIS MILLER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Delta Life Fitness had its first Sweat with a Vet event at its Ormond Beach location on Saturday, May 28.

“This is an event to keep people active,” said Emma Wise, studio manager of the Ormond Beach Delta Life.

“Combat fitness tests are done by the Marines every six months to make sure they’re both physically in shape to take care of themselves, but to also take care of their comrades. I think it’s a good thing for our members and community to see what they have to do to keep our country safe and free.”

The fitness tests began with warmups such as running, stretching, and lifting a few weights. Then it got more difficult: bear crawls, running, fireman carry, dragging your partner, throwing items to a designated location, and lifting.

Everything was voluntary and done at each person’s own pace, making it not so much a test but something fun to do.

It also helped participants reflect on what the U.S. military has to do in combat training.

Delta Life owner Bobby Wise was motivated to hold the event because he is a veteran himself.

Life member Christina Moore said the event was held at a public park, and some people stopped to watch.

“Delta Life is amazing because it empowers women,” she said. “There’s a lot of things that are intimidating about gyms, so seeing people like Lindsay and Emma showing up to be examples and putting it in a place where everyone can see it — it’s just positivity. And we need that in today’s world.”

Jared “Bird” Lloyd is taking the giant display check he received from Nehemiah Gilyard’s family with him to Missouri State. Malik Daley said his $1,000 check from the Nehemiah Gilyard Scholarship Foundation is more meaningful than all the other college scholarships he’s earned.

The scholarships and the students’ high school graduations were a bittersweet reminder of the loss of their friend. Gilyard, a Flagler Palm Coast High School student, died in a single-car crash on County Road 302 on Feb. 14, 2021.

On May 28, the morning of FPC’s graduation, friends and football teammates visited his gravesite, wearing their caps and gowns.

“We wanted to pay our respects, because he should have been graduating with us,” Daley said.

Lloyd, who transferred from FPC to Mainland High for his senior year, was surprised by an early-morning visit from the Gilyards at his home.

“My parents told me that there would be something meaningful and important happening,” Lloyd said.

Grant, Eli Gilyard, Nehemiah’s father Sim Gilyard and his wife Calandra Gilyard woke Lloyd up and presented him with the check.

Lloyd has a full football scholarship at Missouri State, but this scholarship was special because of who it represents, he said.

“I’m going to hang (the display check) up in my dorm,” Lloyd said.

“The meaning of it is bigger than the amount.”

Lloyd said the money will help pay for his summer rooming. He is

“He had spent time with Nehemiah earlier that day,” she said. “When Nehemiah passed, Malik made hundreds of keychains with Nehemiah’s picture in them to pass out.”

Daley said his grades suffered immediately after Nehemiah’s death, but he has learned to use the tragedy as motivation.

“I’ve learned how to deal with it,” he said. “When someone would ask me who I do it for, he’s definitely who I do it for.”

Daley, Jacob Abbas, Michael Crockett, Jeremiah Dye, Thomas Michael and Landon Gonzalez all wore their FPC caps and gowns the morning of their graduation when they visited Nehemiah’s grave.

Lloyd, who graduated four days earlier, wore his blue Mainland cap and gown.

“It was very special and kind of emotional as well,” Lloyd said. “We all kind of said something. I just said I’ll make him proud for both of us.”

As Juleen Daley watched her son graduate, she wished Nehemiah was there, but she knew he was in spirit.

“He has impacted all of these boys’ lives,” she said. “And he’s still here for them. Malik is going to college knowing that Nehemiah is going with him.”

The Gilyards established the scholarship foundation after Nehemiah’s death when community members offered to donate for his funeral. The family decided instead to do something to honor Nehemiah by awarding an annual scholarship in his name to a student who shows exceptional leadership and commitment.

Last year, TyShawn Blount, who grew up playing Pop Warner football with Nehemiah, received a $2,000 scholarship. This year, Daley and Lloyd, teammates of Nehemiah’s on FPC’s football team, each received a $1,000 scholarship.

“I wasn’t really expecting it,” said Daley, who graduated magna cum laude with a 4.0 GPA and also with an associate degree from Daytona State College as a dual-enrolled student.

Daley has been accepted to Stetson where he has received $50,000 in scholarship funds, his mom, Juleen Daley, said. But he might attend the University of North Florida, where his sister is a student. Daley wants to major in criminal justice or political science with the goal of becoming an FBI agent.

City answers questions on runway extension project To extend or not extend the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport’s runway.

Several letters in last week’s edition posed a lot of questions for the city on this topic. We submitted them to the city, and here are staff’s answers: Is a 400-foot extension to the east in the city’s future plans?

There is no planned or proposed 400-foot extension to the east. The current project is a 600-foot extension to the west. An eastern runway extension project would need to be a part of the projects explored as part of the next airport master plan update in 2025.

Did the project play a role in the city not seeking out another golf course lessee?

No. Have airport users expressed an interest in NetJets?

The Environmental Assessment Report for the original runway extension project indicated interest in fractional jet ownership (like NetJets) from three area businesses. The airport will, however, will remain a B-II airport, so no matter what third-party may have interest in utilizing the airport, it must use aircraft within the current fleet mix regulations set by the FAA for the airport.

What is the FAA Airport Hazard area, and how does it impact homeowners?

The FAA has established no such area. Volusia County has established an airport hazard protection zone that applies only to properties within unincorporated Volusia County.

LETTERS Memorial Day Dear Editor: I would like to thank the city of Ormond Beach and the local American Legion for the Remembrance Service held at the Rockefeller Gardens on Memorial Day. The tributes to the fallen that took place touched many people. I saw tough old guys I know around town tear up, but one I sat next to held it all in until the end of the official ceremonies.

This man is well known around town; he is also very humble.

When his branch of the service was honored, he didn’t stand up.

When those who received Purple Hearts were called to rise and be recognized, he remained seated.

Few who know him actually know he served. He was a young man when duty called in the 1960s. He rode his Honda motorcycle from the Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts to Fort Hood in Texas. With a canvas duffle bag on his back, all he owned back then.

He volunteered to serve in what became a very unpopular war. He actually upped voluntarily for three tours during the Vietnam War. And he got it. Those in the service know

The Noise Abatement Task Force in 2009 resulted in a voluntary set of guidelines for pilots and flight schools. Are they still in play? What is the city doing to try to make sure they are followed?

The set of Voluntary Noise Abatement Procedures developed by the city’s Noise Abatement Task Force remain in effect. Staff regularly communicates with local flight schools and airport users in an effort to remind and encourage compliance with these procedures. When the tower is open, it broadcasts the voluntary noise abatement procedures along with current flight conditions over broadband radio. When the tower is not open, pilots may call the Automated Terminal Information System (ATIS) to receive information on current flight conditions. It includes information about the voluntary noise abatement procedures, so each pilot receives this information every time they fly.

When was the last time that the Airport Fund paid back loans to the city’s General Fund? When do you expect the General Fund to be made whole?

Since funding must be paid on capital projects prior to receiving reimbursement from the grant agencies, it is likely there will always be the need for at least a short-term loan to the Airport Fund. The last time the loan balance was zero occurred in 2005, with payment being made at that time. There are too many variables to predict when the loan will be fully repaid.

At the OB Life meeting, it was stated that the runway extension would generate about three more operations a day. Why is this worth the cost of the extension?

Airport improvement projects are performed for the benefit of all air-

Lithium law Dear Editor: When lithium works, it produces power. The power can create light and make things work. When people work, it produces power.

Longer runways provide for a safer flight environment and give aircraft operators more flexibility on the configuration/utilization of the aircraft during takeoff.

Many citizens walked away from the OB Life feeling like the workshop’s format did not allow them to be heard. Would the city consider holding a different kind of public forum in the future?

The city answered all 178 questions that were asked by the residents at the OB Life meeting. This citizen engagement series format has proved to successfully facilitate civil discourse between residents and the city and improves overall transparency. There will be another meeting as a requirement of the FAA upon completion of the Supplemental Environmental Assessment for the runway extension project. All comments will be forwarded to the FAA. What process did the city undergo to attempt to acquire easements for the originally proposed 1,000 feet to the west, and why did it fall through?

The FAA required the city to acquire three avigation easements needed to secure the Runway Protection Zone (RPZ) described in the original scope of the project, which was a 1,000 linear foot westward extension of the runway. Through the city’s engineering firm, property owners subject to the necessary easements were approached to determine their level of interest and there was none.

Why does the city nor its consultant have a survey of the specific

Issue of overdevelopment Dear Editor: I am writing this letter to express my concern about how development has been recklessly approved by the current Ormond Beach City Commission. Why are we allowing overdevelopment to happen? Why are we allowing clear-cutting of trees, filling in of wetlands, higher than acceptable housing density, poorly designed storm water runoff, high traffic on inadequate roads, and inadequate green space to mention a few.

Any future development must include the following: - The City Commission must

Illustrated airport property boundaries are based upon the recorded legal description of the property, as is common practice.

Can you explain the differences between B-II and C-II aircraft?

Why are C-II aircraft mentioned in the draft SEA? The airport will remain a B-II airport.

An Airport Reference Code of B-II is typical for an airport that serves small, single-engine aircraft and some larger general-aviation aircraft.

A B-II airport can serve aircraft with an approach speed of 91 to 120 knots and a wingspan of 49 to 78 feet. A C-II airport can serve aircraft with the same wingspan as a B-II airport, but with higher approach speeds of 121 to 140 knots. Environmental assessments for airport projects examine a wide range of factors in order to determine appropriate development goals based upon assessed needs.

You previously stated some properties have been identified by FDOT as having trees obstructing the approach to the existing runway. Have the affected homeowners been notified? Does this apply to all whose properties border the airport on the west side?

Potential obstructions that have been identified by FDOT for both the existing and extended runway involve primarily five parcels west of the airport in unincorporated Volusia County. Official notification of the affected property owners is coordinated through Volusia County.

vote to restore the regulations and ordinances that were in existence prior to the more lenient St. Johns Water Management Codes. Reverting back to the pre-St. John’s code will provide the needed protection of our wetlands, waterways and greenspaces.

- All development must include a plan to protect all of the wetlands and ensure that no clear-cutting will take place in any proposed development. This must be presented and approved by the Planning Board prior to being presented to the City Commission.

- No zoning changes that increase density in a residential development should be approved. In fact, there must be an effort to reduce residential density. This will lower the impact to storm water runoff, demand on water usage and traffic within the city.

- Re-direct runoff away from any culverts emptying into our rivers.

The above actions and policy decisions will keep Ormond Beach a desirable place we call “home.”

These are not just my views; many Ormond Beach citizens I have talked with feel the same way.

Rescue ReTail launched its official grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 4.

The Halifax Humane Society’s newly relocated thrift store opened early to a steady stream of patrons.

Dawn Duncan, director of development for the Halifax Humane Society, is in charge of working with the community to increase private resource donations, overseeing events and the thrift store which she calls “the little thrift that could.” She was impressed with the new location’s turnout.

“We had a soft launch on June 1 and had a record day of sales,” she said. “Yesterday proved equally as strong. Today the line has been extraordinarily long before even our normal opening time.”

According to the HHS Community Outreach Director Barry Kukes, they lost their lease and had a choice: lease somewhere else or buy a building. The nonprofit chose to purchase a free-standing building on one of the busiest thoroughfares in Ormond Beach: Yonge Street. HHS’ previous thrift store was situated off West Granada Boulevard and was not easily seen from the road. So far, the new location has been a boon for business.

“We’ve had some super sales days already,” he said. “I think it’s the visibility, it’s a nicer building, people are interested, and it’s newer. I’m sure sales will tail off, but we hope it will stay around double.”

Purchasing the new facility was a strategic investment to help offset the deficit the organization has operated at every year. The Granada store generated close to half a million dollars annually in revenue. With the new location operational, HHS is hoping to double those figures and reach $1 million in annual revenue to support animals in need.

astute in the area. When attacking issues that affect animals, they not only consider the welfare of the animal but also look at it from a financial standpoint to figure out a way to achieve success.

“We are always looking at the numbers,” he said. “You have to run it as a business. I know it’s for the animals. We respect and love our animals, but if we are not financially successful, how can we benefit the animals?”

Stack learned long ago that there were no advocates for the animals even though the majority of people cared about them. He felt that giving back to them was a way of giving back to the community.

“I like doing what I’m doing because what gives me the most satisfaction is giving back to the community through the animals,” he said.

riday, June 3, marked the last day of school for students of Volusia County Schools.

How did your school celebrate the last day — or last week — of this school year? At Ormond Beach Elementary, students were recognized for their achievements, greeted by a sign by Yard Love Ormond Beach and participated in a field day. Beachside Elementary celebrated its first graduating class of fifth grade students since the school’s merger between Osceola and Ortona Elementary with an inaugural farewell ceremony.

Beachside Elementary students Cameron Horn, Emily Kittrell-Martin, Lily Thompson and Cael Benedict were recognized for outstanding academic excellence during their school’s fifth grade Farewell Ceremony.

Ormond Beach Middle School held a graduation ceremony for its eight graders.

ampers participating in the first week of Ormond Beach’s Enviro Camp at the Environmental Discovery Center tried their hand at archery on Tuesday, June 7.

The first week of Enviro Camp, themed “If I were King of the Forest,” began on Monday, June 6, and will additionally teach campers about the mammals that inhabit Central Park and the Ormond Beach area, according to the camp’s flyer.

Enviro Camp began in 2006 and was originally held at The Casements, but moved to the EDC in 2016 after it was constructed.

The camp is designed for children ages 7-10 and runs for two, four-week sessions.

A student of Oceans Dance Studio in Daytona Beach recently took home the title of World Champion in the Pro/Amateur 65+ American Smooth Multi-Dance Championship in the Blackpool Dance Festival held in Blackpool, England.

Christine Schneider Downs, of South Daytona, competed with her guest instructor Samuele Pugliese. Downs was also the runner up in the Pro/ Amateur 65+ International Ballroom Multi-Dance Championship.

Downs began taking dance lessons at Oceans Dance Studio, located at 134 S. Beach St., in 2013. She has trained there in all styles of ballroom and social dance, and has competed in both national and international events.

She had set a goal of becoming a Blackpool champion, and met it during the 2022 Blackpool Dance Festival in the American Smooth style. In addition, Downs and Pugliese achieved the title of champion teacher/student couple in the 65+ American Smooth multi-dance category, as well as vice-champions in the 65+ international ballroom category.

FUTURES FOUNDATION RECEIVES GRANT

FOUNDATION BRINGS THEATER TO VCS STUDENTS

FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools recently received a $30,000 grant from Duke Energy Foundation, which will help provide teacher classroom minigrants and fund the district’s Project Investigating Biomes in Science at Rose Bay in Port Orange.

According to a press release, FUTURES Foundation is one of 22 organizations in Florida to collectively receive $641,000 in grants from the Duke Energy Foundation.

VCS teachers may apply for a mini-grant through Sept. 15 at FindItFundItFlorida.com/ Volusia for energy-related and STEM mini-grants. Those selected will be funded in October for the 2022-2023 school year.

The Duke Energy Foundation grant also supports Project IBIS, a program supporting conservation training and research around STEM and environmental initiatives, as well as workforce skills.

“By investing in our local education foundations and the programs that ensure all students have access to robust STEM education, we are helping to create a vibrant economy,” said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president, in the press release.

The first year of the Peabody Foundation’s three-year partnership with Volusia County Schools, through the Foundation’s “Youth+Art=Success!” program, included in-school performances, complimentary tickets to a Broadway tour performance at the Peabody Auditorium, and scholarships offered to every high school in Volusia County. A total of 4,931 VCS students were impacted in PAF’s first year of VCS programming.

The Peabody Foundation’s in-school performances by Atlantic Coast Theatre for Youth for elementary and middle schools featured 60-minute performances including the Ponce de Leoncentric “Florida Treasures” and “The Time Machine,” an adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic — each performed by ACT. In addition, the students were treated to “The Fairy Tales of Grimm,” a classical 19thCentury theatrical melodrama, and the classic Brothers Grimm story “The Elves and the Shoemaker.”

All shows were followed by a student/actor Q+A. A total of 18 elementary and middle school performances (11 Title 1 schools) were held throughout the county, reaching a total of 4,721 students.

In April, 200 students and chaperones from Mainland, Spruce Creek and Pine Ridge High Schools received complimentary tickets to attend the Broadway tour performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” at the historic Peabody Auditorium.

To round out the school year, the PAF Scholarship Committee reviewed applications from VCS seniors planning to pursue degrees in the arts. A total of eight scholarships were presented throughout May 2022 to qualified students. Visit peabodyfoundation.org

The Flagler Soccer 7v7 High School League opened its season June 3 with four boys games and two girls games at the Indian Trail Sports Complex.

The league allows high school players who aren’t busy with soccer clubs to play with their teammates over the summer.

“In 2018, I was playing in the Flagler Soccer Adult League, and a lot of high schoolers asked to play in the league,” said Ramtin Amiri, who is Flagler Palm Coast High School’s boys soccer coach.

Amiri organized the high school version of the adult 7 on 7 league under the Flagler Soccer organization, run by Gavin Ginnane.

“In 2018 we had 33 players. We’ve grown and grown since then,” Amiri said.

This season, there are over 100 players, with eight boys teams and four girls teams. High school teammates play together, but they wear different uniforms and go by different team names. Some of the teams have sponsors.

Amiri’s FPC players have formed two teams — Chenzo Web FC and Lotus Elite Care FC. The FPC girls wear black instead of Bulldog green and are known as the Dawgz. The Dawgz won their first game 8-2 against the Falcons, a team of Pedro Menendez players. The Ormond Sandcrabs, a group of Seabreeze players, also won, although they had

just five players.

Chenzo Web FC defeated the Old City Hooligans, a group of St. Augustine High School players, 5-2.

The games are played on a smaller field with 27-minute halves. Each team plays with six field players and a goalkeeper. The season runs through the summer.

“It’s a super, fast pace,” Amiri said.

“You’re on one side of the field and the next second you’re on the other side. You’re getting a lot of touches.”

Schlobohm, who graduated from Flagler Palm Coast High School in 1988, played softball and ran track in high school. Her grandfather, George Clark, was a NASCAR driver who raced on the beach.

Her father, Eddie, was a racing official.

She said she will continue competing until she can’t do it anymore. “At this age I wonder, Why didn’t I do this before? I’m so good at this.”

“We were getting our (butts) beat,” he said. “So I said, ‘I know powerlifting. Let’s try that. She literally started with (just) the bar.”

They crowded their garage with equipment. Then, during the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, Just Train Fitness of Palm Coast loaned them some equipment. Suddenly, their garage wasn’t big enough, so they opened a private gym they call, “The Freak Show,” on North State Street in Bunnell. Kelly and Joe, and some of the Schlobohms’ friends, train there.

“It’s more of a social club,” she said.

All of the equipment is designed for powerlifting. Joe Schlobohm has re-engineered several pieces of equipment to focus on the sport’s three lifts — bench press, deadlift and squat.

Kelly Schlobohm competed in an American Powerlifting Federation meet over the Memorial Day weekend at the Perfect Storm Hardcore Gym in Holly Hill. It was an equipped meet for single-ply and multi-ply powerlifters.

Single-ply means lifters wear a suit with one layer of thick material.

Kelly Schlobohm had been a distance runner for 30 years.

Now she’s a powerlifting grandma, one of the strongest women in the world, someone who competes and out-lifts women half her age.

Schlobohm, 51, is the national record holder in the Masters 2 age group (50-54) in the 148-pound weight class for single-ply equipment. She ranks fourth in the world among all powerlifting federations. And she ranks 28th in the U.S. and 180th in the world among women of all ages.

“It surprises me that I’m very competitive with 20-year-olds. That’s not too shabby for a grandmother of two,” Schlobohm said.

The Bunnell resident has been powerlifting for just three years. Before that she had been a distant runner for 30 years. When her husband, Joe Schlobohm, began training her in 2019, she weighed 115 pounds. Now, she weighs between 145 and 150. And she’s all muscle.

“I went from being a gazelle with long muscles to what I look like now with short muscles. It was quite a transformation,” she said.

Joe Schlobohm was a competitive powerlifter before having to give up competition for health reasons. He weighed as much as 327 pounds. He has trimmed down to 250. He and Kelly Schlobohm were looking for an activity they could do together. First, they tried box-
