Omicron continues to surge in Flagler County, with the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County reporting 1,469 positive cases for the week of Jan 10 as of Friday, Jan. 14; up from 1,166 for the week before and far exceeding the peak of 936 seen during the delta surge.

In Volusia County, there were 7,465 cases over the week, up from 6,443 the week before; in St. Johns County, 3,507, up from 3,126. Putnam County had a more sudden increase — a rise to 1,061 from 397 the week before.

The Florida Department of Health-Flagler had tested about 700 people for COVID-19 at its drive-thru testing center at the Flagler Executive Airport so far that week as of Friday morning, and was expecting another 150 on Friday, Florida Department of Health-Flagler Communications Manager Gretchen Smith said.

“We had a very, very busy week,” she said on Flagler Broadcasting’s “Free For All Friday” Jan. 14.

Hospitalizations have remained lower than during the delta surge, Smith noted: AdventHealth had 38 COVIDrelated inpatients as of Jan. 14, and had had a peak of 101 in August; two patients are in the ICU, and two are on ventilators, she said. A total of 288 Flagler County residents have died since the start of the pan-

demic.

Testing at the airport has been on weekday mornings, by appointment, Smith said.

But health department staff were also surprised by a recent phenomenon: Large numbers of people who’d set appointments weren’t showing up for testing.

On Jan. 13, Smith said, about 60 people skipped their appointments. People who need testing can call and see if the health department can fit them in, she said.

But, she added, the cancellations might be because people are deciding that if they have all of the symptoms, it may not make sense to bother getting tested when they can simply stay home, lay low, and see how they’re feeling on day six.

She gave a quick recap of the history of the pandemic in Flagler County.

“It’s amazing to think that we started vaccinating people over a year ago: The beginning of January was when it all started; people who were over 65, plus health care workers,” she said.

By the end of March, that expanded to people over 40; then, in April, to those over 16.

But in July, local cases began rising, and Flagler had its

That’s dwarfed by the 1,469 cases this week, Smith noted.

“You can kind of guess that omicron is much more contagious than delta,” she said.

Testing and vaccination shifted to the Flagler Executive Airport last October, with a Pfizer vaccination clinic on Monday nights.

Current testing through the health department is 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. across from the Airport Professional Building at 120 Airport Road, on the field on the way to the Flagler Executive Airport through Friday, Jan. 21, and requires an appointment: Call 386-437-7350, Ext. 0. Both rapid tests and PCR tests are available.

In Volusia County, PCR testing is available at the Florida Department of Health’s Daytona Beach location at 1845 Holsonback Drive and at its Orange City location at 775 Harley Strickland Blvd., for people with symptoms and those who have been exposed to COVID-19, including students seeking testing for clearance to return to school.

To aid wildlife, Flagler Beach bans balloon releases Sea turtles, seabirds and other animals can mistake balloons for food or become entangled in their strings.

Some sea turtle species — including leatherbacks, the largest sea turtles in the world — eat jellyfish. Unfortunately, a lot of things that aren’t a jellyfish can look like a jellyfish — including plastic bags and balloons, which can kill turtles that eat them.

Seabirds are also at risk.

Other animals can get entangled in the balloons’ strings.

“Everyone is acknowledging balloon releases for what they are, and that is an environmental hazard,” Commissioner Eric Cooley said at a Jan. 13 Flagler Beach City Commission meeting.

The commission voted unanimously to pass an ordinance banning the intentional release of lighter-than-air balloons and floating paper lanterns. The ordinance had been a suggestion of the Friends of A1A, Cooley said.

“It’s a practice that really serves no purpose anymore, it’s not good for the environment, and, especially in this city, I think it’s kind of a nobrainer,” Cooley said.

Commissioner Ken Bryan, a boater, said he’s found balloons in the water many miles offshore.

“I’ve pulled them out of the ocean,” he said. “Out fishing, I see balloons out there — 15, 18, 20 miles — they’re all over the place.”

Mayor Suzie Johnson said she’d noticed that some ordinances aren’t enforced.

“This is something that I would definitely want to see enforced,” she said. “... What is the penalty for something like this?”

City Attorney Drew Smith said there are two enforcement routes. For businesses violating the rule, a magistrate citation could be filed.

Individuals who violate the rule could get a civil citation.

In either case, enforcement would be difficult: A police officer of code enforcement officer would have to see the balloon release to write a citation.

Cooley says it’s common for real estate agents who’ve held events that involve balloons to release them afterward so that they don’t have to deal with them in their car.

“They just cut the strings,” he said. “I’ve seen it done numerous times.”

He suggested notifying the Flagler County Association of Realtors once the ordinance is passed.

Commissioner Jane Mealy suggested also notifying places that sell balloons, like the local Publix, so that they could tell customers not to release them.

“I think it’s mostly out of ignorance, not out of being mean or anything,” she said.

W

hat happens to a drop of rainwater after it falls on your lawn, makes its way to your swale, then flows toward a ditch?

One city of Palm Coast division makes sure stormwater gets where it’s supposed to go, rather than flooding streets, yards and homes.

The city’s Stormwater Division staff uses geospatial technology — the kind used by FEMA — to track where water will go as it flows off local yards, streets and parking lots.

Since 2019, according to a city staff presentation at a Jan. 11 City Council workshop, the Stormwater Division has created a Citywide Stormwater Modeling and Master Plan, a Ditch

Rehabilitation and Maintenance Program and an Infrastructure Inspection Program that’s completed 85 inspections over the past two years.

Some of the division’s work is helped by the way Palm Coast was created.

“It’s unique, in the sense that it is a very young city, essentially built by a major development corporation,” city Stormwater Engineer Mike Peel said. “Some of the work that ITT did, we’ve been able to pick up and take advantage of.”

The division uses modeling to simulate where water would flow and collect in different kinds of storm events — a 2-year storm, a 10-year storm, a 100-year storm — and which changes would provide the greatest benefit to the largest number of people.

“I find it useful that there was some stormwater planning earlier because Palm Coast was a planned community,” stormwater engineer Carmelo Morales said. “So from a design perspective, I don’t have to redo the work. I already have a large amount of that data, so it’s more recompiling than engineering today’s stormwater needs.”

SWALES

When Palm Coast residents think stormwater, many think of swales — a stormwater feature common in Palm Coast, but less so elsewhere.

Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the city’s stormwater management system, these pseudo-ditches keep water from backing up toward homes and filter it before it percolates down toward the water table.

“Swales are intended to do that during that first flush of water or rain,” Morales said. “You want that to slow down. The grass or vegetation has time to kind of remove those contaminants.”

The city’s more than 1,200 miles of swales are a Sisyphean project for stormwater staff, continually requiring maintenance.

The city has a goal to regrade and rehabilitate 25 miles worth of them each year, and this year, with new equipment and a staff reorganization, was able to do 37 miles.

This most visible of stormwater features is potentially also the most misunderstood, Peel said. When water sits in swales for a while, it can alarm or annoy residents.

the fact that water’s standing in there too much,” Peel said. But, he added, “I think most citizens probably have a misconception as to the impact that has on the system.”

Even if a swale is flooded, it’s not going to flood your house, he said. Ditches are a different matter, he said: Keeping those flowing is important.

Palm Coast has two maintenance crews dedicated to swales, two dedicated to ditches, and one dedicated to pipe maintenance.

PROJECTS

Some of the water that flows from a yard to a swale to a ditch ends up in a freshwater or saltwater canal.

But some of it makes its way to low-lying wetland areas like Graham Swamp.

“They serve a vital function: They help slow the water down, they help filter out a lot of pollutants and they help provide habitat for wildlife,” Peel said. “Graham Swamp connects to the Intracoastal, and of course, that’s a large conservation area and it’s got a lot of low-lying areas, so it does at times serve as a kind of holding area.”

When water heads to an outfall that’s a protected area with a conservation easement, that can make stormwater staff’s work harder — it means they can’t do much to alter the land to improve flow. When water is high in Graham Swamp, it affects the stormwater upstream.

The city’s stormwater staff views the city’s streets and communities as a series of basins and sub-basins, each requiring attention.

A number of projects are underway or in the planning phase. Among them is a set of improvements designed to improve water flow in the Woodlands area near Colbert Lane and Blare Drive, north of the swamp.

“It increases the capacity at which water can flow through there, through that culvert,” Morales said.

“That has an immediate positive impact to the Woodland area.”

Once it’s done, water will drain much faster after heavy rains, he said.

Other projects will include drainage improvements in the K-Section, dredging of E-Section freshwater canals and the replacement of the city’s largest weir, on the Royal Palms Canal.

“We found some opportunities to create some additional capacity,” Peel said. “A lot of this stuff allows the system to recover a lot faster.”

City OKs rezoning for borrow pits Palm Coast has rezoned and changed the Future Land Use Map designation for 40.7 acres of land about a mile and a half south of State Road 100 to allow the owner to expand borrow pits and floodplain storage there.

The property is owned

by JTL Grand Landings Development and S.E. Cline Construction. The companies use dirt from the borrow pits as fill for construction projects elsewhere.

A current borrow pit on the site is approximately 30 feet deep at its deepest point. A pump runs around the clock to keep it from filling with water.

The City Council voted unanimously Jan. 18 in favor of the FLUM and zoning changes.

The borrow pits will help create a buffer between the Flagler Executive Airport and nearby homes, according to a city staff report.

Citing code, City Council approves storage facility Residents who addressed the Palm Coast City Council at a Jan. 18 meeting did not want a proposed new self-storage facility near their homes in the Hidden Lakes community.

But they’ll likely get one: A rezoning for the proposed 95,500-squarefoot storage facility earned the council’s approval in a 4-1 vote as council members said they had no legal basis to deny the developer’s proposal.

Councilman Victor Barbosa was the sole dissenting vote.

“Based on my votes in the past, I’m not loved by developers,” City Councilman Eddie Branquinho said.

But, he added, “We can not violate laws, and if we’re going to deny this, we’re going to have to justify why we denied it.”

The storage facility will feature 287 covered spots for boats or recreational vehicles, plus buildings with a combined 95,500 feet of self-storage space, at 3830 Old Kings Road S., on the northwest corner of the intersection of Old Kings Road and Town Center Boulevard.

The 23-acre parcel of land is just south of the Gold Choice Assisted Living facility, with which it would share an entry road.

The owner had requested that the city rezone it from the city’s general office zoning designation to the general commercial zoning designation.

Locals who opposed the change said they didn’t want the traffic or noise they believed would come with the storage facility.

“We are very concerned about what’s going on; we do not think you should change the zoning,” said

Arena Lake Drive resident Paul Weber said that if a storage facility is placed on the parcel, it should be scaled down, and the boat and RV parking eliminated.

He said he had seen instances of storage facilities that blended with an upscale area, and hoped that the storage facility, if it’s added, will be built to be attractive.

As the City Council prepared to discuss the rezoning, City Attorney Bill Reischmann cautioned the councilman.

“You are not here as elected officials on this case as much as you are as judges, and judges have to follow the law,” Reischmann said.

In this case, he said, the law in question is the city’s Land Development Code.

“If you are to deny the application today, you must state, on the record today, what grounds you find in the record that fail to comply with the

law,” he said.

City Councilman Ed Danko asked city staff what kinds of uses would be allowed under the existing general office zoning designation.

Deputy Chief Development Officer Ray Tyner listed some, including pharmacies, veterinarians’ offices, hotels, art dealers, florists, specialty food stores, sporting goods stores, book and music stores, bail bond places, technical trade schools.

Branquinho suggested that the proposed storage facility would be less disruptive to the neighborhood than retail stores that could be built there under the existing zoning.

The 23 acres of land could easily hold 46 stores, he said, which would attract much more traffic than the storage facility.

Councilman Nick Klufas noted that the city’s planning board had voted 6-0 in favor of the self-storage facility.

“We have to make a decision today based on our land use code,” he said.

“I haven’t heard anything today that goes against a single point of the land use code.”

Palm Coast investigates saltwater canal dredging Palm Coast city staff recently met with a consulting firm to look into having the city’s saltwater canals dredged, interim City Manager Denise Bevan told the City Council at a Jan. 18 meeting.

City Councilman Ed Danko, who’s pushed the city to look into a dredging program, raised the topic toward the end of the meeting.

“I hope we move forward and look at these consultant companies and find one that’s reasonable, and get the facts so we don’t have to sit here and wonder, ‘Will it cost $50 million, or $25 (million),’” he said.

He added that he’d been out on the canals and noted spots where the water is only 3 or 4 feet deep, depending on tides.

Councilman Victor Barbosa said he believed the city needs a maintenance plan for the saltwater canals.

“I don’t think dredging it just one time is going to do it,” Barbosa said. “I think we’re going to have to go out and buy one of these dredging machines and get a crew.”

Danko suggested that Palm Coast city staff speak to city staff in the city of Cape Coral, which has 400 miles of saltwater canals and its own dredging program, for suggestions.

Same-day fireworks displays ‘unworkable,’ Flagler Beach officials say Palm Coast has proposed shifting its July 3 fireworks celebration to July 4, which would make it conflict with Flagler Beach’s event.

This past Tuesday, Jan. 11, Palm Coast City Council members proposedmoving the city’s Independence Day fireworks event, traditionally held on July 3, to July 4.

That would mean that Palm Coast’s fireworks event and the city of Flagler Beach’s fireworks event would be held on the same night.

Flagler Beach officials don’t think that’s feasible.

“It’s just not something that could be done,” Scott Spradley, a local attorney and the head of Flagler Beach’s Ad Hoc Fourth of July Findings Committee, told Flagler Beach city commissioners at a commission meeting on Jan. 13.

“In my opinion, insufficient staffing, signage and other resources make a simultaneous fireworks display with the city of Palm Coast unworkable, unsafe and unsound,” he said.

Spradley said he’d also received a call from a senior city of Palm Coast staff member asking if Flagler Beach might be willing to shift its fireworks event to July 3 so that Palm Coast could have July 4.

He said he’d replied that while that wasn’t his decision to make, he believed the answer would be “an unequivocal ‘no’ or an unequivocal ‘h--- no,’” he said.

People come to the beach on July 4 expecting fireworks, Spradley said; trying to hold the event a day early just wouldn’t work.

Two events held at the same time also wouldn’t necessarily split the crowd in a way that would make it easy to divide the manpower needed to keep attendees safe.

“I’m sorry, that’s not how it works,” he said. “What are you going

to tell the officer at the intersection — only half of you has to be here now, because it’s only half? I mean, it doesn’t work that way.”

Spradley, after hearing about Palm Coast’s proposal, wrote a letter to Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin, opposing the change.

Flagler Beach City Commissioner Jane Mealy called the letter “spoton.”

Flagler Beach Mayor Suzie Johnston said she hoped that Palm Coast officials would consider the safety of law enforcement personnel when making their decision.

“I just want to emphasize the importance of making sure that we have the safety of those officers … determining the city of Palm Coast’s outcome as well,” she said.

Coast’s proposal: He was there to talk about the committee’s suggestions for what Flagler Beach could do to have a successful July 4 celebration after the city last year considered not holding a fireworks show.

But the community seems to support a fireworks display, he said, and the committee believes the city can hold one safely.

He reiterated suggestions he’d made at a previous City Commission meeting about the topic — that the city consider implementing a feebased shuttle system for attendees, encourage the Rotary Club to keep the parade on the short side, look into securing around 700 extra parking spaces at the Babcock Home Furniture, First Baptist Church and Boston Whaler properties, and increase law enforcement staffing for the event while holding a public awareness campaign to prevent underage drinking.

“I think the view of the committee is that so long as these suggestions and recommendations are implemented so that we have a safe evening, then fireworks will be appropriate,” he said.

Rather than trying to hold a fireworks display on July 4 — the same night as Flagler Beach’s fireworks display — the city of Palm Coast, which has historically held its Independence Day celebration on July 3, will approach Flagler Beach and discuss swapping dates every year.

Palm Coast city councilmen backed away from a previous proposal to hold simultaneous events after a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office chief told council members at a Jan. 18 council meeting that holding the events on the same night would tax the agency’s resources.

“It will strain not only the manpower resources of the Sheriff’s Office, but the other seven-plus entities that may be involved,” Community Policing Division Chief Jon Welker said.

Another complication, he added, is that the local population has grown, while some other municipalities are considering canceling their events this year — raising the possibility that Flagler County could see an influx of visitors.

The FCSO could plan to handle known issues, like traffic, Welker said, but could then come up short staffed if there was an emergency, potentially having to field employees who’d been scheduled to have the day off.

Other resources could be a concern as well, Welker said: For instance, Flagler Beach and Palm Coast have each used the same traffic message board and traffic cones for their events, which wouldn’t be possible if the events are on the same night.

Danko, at the Jan. 18 meeting, said he understood that safety was of utmost importance. Echoing a suggestion made by Branquinho the previous week, he said he’d like to see Flagler Beach and Palm Coast swap back and forth on July 3 and July 4, so that each city would get to host Independence Day on July 4 every other year.

That way, Danko said, “We get to work with our neighbors, instead of fight with them.”

Mayor David Alfin noted that Flagler Beach’s pier — which serves as the launching area for its fireworks events — is expected to be undergoing renovations next year.

“Flagler Beach may not have a pier next year, so it may be their last hurrah,” he said.

Branquinho agreed with alternating July 4 events.

“I think that’s the way to do it,” he said.

Alfin said that he and interim City Manager Denise Bevan will approach Flagler Beach.

“It’s always in everyone’s best interest to find a common solution that fits both, actually, our one larger community,” he said.

He challenged his fellow council members, city staff members and residents to read the Declaration of Independence.

“Read it for yourself. It is a fluent — it is a beautiful — piece of writing,” he said. “Read it for yourself, interpret it for yourself, and make your own judgments.

Don’t let others tell you what it means. Find out what it means for you. And once you’re armed with that, celebrate two great days of the Fourth of July celebration here in Flagler County.”

LETTERS Why we rallied for voting rights on Jan. 17 Dear Editor: Honoring the request of Martin Luther King III to honor his father by advocating for voting rights, dozens of people gathered at Wadsworth Park on Jan. 17 to honor the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King with an energetic rally.

The diverse group, waving signs and flags at passing motorists amid brisk and breezy conditions, were echoing the demands of Dr. King and other civil rights giants of the 1960s — on this holiday more than five decades later — because voting rights are once again under a dire threat in this nation.

With state legislatures in many states enacting new laws to restrict voting access and even, in some cases, to grab partisan control over vote-counting, the Flagler Beach Democratic Club, led by President Sally Hirst, organized the rally to raise awareness and energize opposition to this anti-democratic push.

With plans to rally again repeatedly in coming weeks, the club hopes to galvanize the concern of all American voters who cherish the free vote — the foundation of a just society — to raise their voices against this avalanche of new restrictions.

Dr. King, and all those who fought the first battles for voting rights so long ago, would expect nothing less of fair-minded Americans today.

Why this Flagler resident voted for Biden Dear Editor: In a recent letter to the editor, a writer was pondering why Flagler County folks voted for Joe Biden?

It’s a question that begs a response from those who did.

Like the substantial majority of Americans, some of us in Flagler understood clearly what Biden’s opponent represented, who he really was, and the dire need for a profound national transformation.

Voters everywhere across the country had four years to wise up to a narcissistic, divisive, powerhungry purveyor of falsehoods, were fed up with incessant ugly puerile tweets, and believed he was wholly unfit for the job, a guy who was dragging down our country’s core values of honesty, integrity and decency.

And that’s in large part why we voted for Biden because as he so often reminds us: “That’s not who we are. We’re better than that.” And that’s something as a nation, and in our small Florida county, we surely need to recognize.

There may have been a minority of Biden supporters here in Flagler, as the letter writer pointed out, but we did our part to help lock in a decisive and historic vote-count victory for Joe Biden and believed strongly it was the right thing to do — and we still do.

Palm Coast is affected when Supreme Court doesn’t base vaccine decision on facts Dear Editor: “We’re in an environment in which truth and consequences are fungible.” Dr. Robert Malone made this very bold statement during a Dec. 30, 2021, episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast, which has now been listened to over 50 million times. During a time when every statement from the media or from politicians feels hyperbolic, the recent Supreme Court oral arguments on OSHA’s vaccine mandates illustrates just how true this statement is.

Albeit likely unintentional, Justices Sonia Sotomayer and Elena Kagan both made egregiously inaccurate statements from the Supreme Court bench as the premise to their questions posed to the oralists. Presumably, they are making decisions, which have grave consequences on personal liberties, based on misinformation. This is not only dangerous, it opens a floodgate of possibilities for future jurists to rely on inaccurate information when making decisions that impact millions of lives.

Jurists have an obligation to rely on accurate information and to not further disseminate misinformation when hearings are either viewable or audible by the Public.

So, when did our Supreme Court justices become politicians first and jurists second?

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, Jan. 13, that while OSHA’s vaccine mandate for private employers with over 100 employees was unconstitutional and an overreach of executive power, the vaccine mandate for facilities that receive Medicare or Medicaid funding could stand.

Here in Palm Coast, that affects several facilities, most notably AdventHealth and most — if not all — of our assisted living facilities. So, while our nurses, doctors and other facility workers sacrificed their own well-being on the front lines of this pandemic for two years, they are now being told to either undergo an irreversible medical treatment or lose their job. These workers have a right to know that nine justices on the Supreme Court made this decision based on facts.

What our Supreme Court justices said during live oral arguments were not facts, and this court’s decision is final. It’s binding. And in this instance, it could be based on falsities that were made with impunity.

Not a single person from the CDC — including Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky — while under oath during Congressional hearings,

confirmed Justice Sotomayer’s comment regarding children on ventilators, and we’ve heard the CDC director now tell us that the COVID vaccines may stop hospitalization or severe illness, but they do not stop COVID transmission.

These are the facts.

Regardless of one’s political beliefs or one’s opinions on vaccines and vaccine mandates, all citizens should be able to rely on all branches of our government to tell us the truth and to use the truth, rather than agendas, to drive its legislative policy-making and its judicial decisions in landmark court cases that will forever shape the laws of this country and the lives of the people that inhabit it.

The fact of the matter is, truth and consequences are only fungible by those at the top, those driving the narratives, those controlling the news feed, and those making decisions that affect the citizenry. We, the people, feel the consequences of their lies for them.

What will happen to our necessary medical and assisted living facilities in Palm Coast? Will we continue to be plagued with staff shortages due to workers being out from having contracted COVID and now from quitting or being fired because they don’t want to take a vaccine? When essential workers in a community begin to be eliminated, the citizens feel it. There is nothing truer or more consequential than that.

Flagler County, let’s keep our republic Dear Editor: The events of Jan. 6, 2021, at The Capitol and the recent revelations about the extent of the attempts to subvert the very foundation of America have shaken a nation that is stumbling along a forked path.

Which road shall we take? The one with a dictatorship and oneparty rule that spits on the rights of selected citizens? Or a country where we understand and celebrate our diversity and the fact that this has always been our way of life so let us not trample on it today?

This is a local issue, not just national. Three busloads of demonstrators traveled from Flagler County to Washington, D.C., that day, led by a county commissioner.

Driving around Palm Coast, one can see that there are many homes adorned with messages (some obscene) that are supportive of that

view.

For too long, the system of government in place now has been adulterated by efforts to make America into something else, certainly not the “land of the free, and the home of the brave.” All these events occurring at the same time now has led many to seemingly turn their backs on government, thinking the negatives being proposed will not affect them. But, in actuality, the movement to reject what the founders held dear, by trying to institute a one race, one faith, one people as the so-called leaders is exactly the wrong path and will only lead to many years of terrible consequences for us all.

So how should we recognize Jan. 6? By all of us re-committing to the ideas presented in our founding document, the Constitution that established our democratic republic. As Ben Franklin said, “now you have a republic, if you can keep it.”

Let us make sure we keep it.

Flagler Palm Coast High School student Noah Smith, 16, was killed in a shooting in Bunnell after 10 p.m. in the 400 block of South Anderson Street the night of Jan. 12.

The Bunnell Police Department initially headed the investigation, but the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s Major Case Unit took the lead on the evening of Jan. 13 because the case may require investigative techniques beyond Bunnell’s jurisdiction, according to a news release from the FCSO. “We have heard the chatter of recent threats and retaliation in the community,” Sheriff Rick Staly said, according to the FCSO’s news release.

“Retaliation and violence will not be tolerated, and we will do everything in our power to prevent crimes or additional violence stemming from this senseless killing. We’ve been informed of multiple threats against the alleged perpetrator and the possibility of people taking matters into their own hands. While we share in the anger, sadness, and frustration of this unfortunate event, we are asking the community to let us conduct our investigation and allow us to get justice for the victim and his family. Detectives are working around the clock to solve this murder which took

a young man’s life, and we will not rest until his killer is brought to justice.”

AWARD FOR TIPS RISES TO $10,000 At the request of Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly, the Florida Sheriff’s Association’s Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program added up to an additional $5,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest of the person who shot and killed FPC student Noah Smith.

CrimeStoppers of Northeast Florida had previously offered a reward of up to $5,000. This combined reward now up to $10,000 could go to the person whose tip leads to an arrest involving the death of the Bunnell teen.

“We know people in the

community have information that could help this investigation,” Staly said.

“Now is the time to decide if you want to be a witness or a defendant, so call CrimeStoppers and provide us the information that will help catch a killer. You will remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward up to $10,000. Do this now for Noah and his family.

We will not rest until his killer is brought to justice.”

Felon arrested after fleeing traffic stop

Flagler Schools notified school staff the morning of Jan. 13 by email, not mentioning the student’s name, and had a response team with school psychologists and counselors on campus, according to school district spokesman Jason Wheeler.

“They’ve been there since the beginning of school today; they’re always available to other campuses as well, as needed,” Wheeler said.

“Anytime you lose a student, no matter what the circumstances are, it’s felt across the district,” Wheeler said.

“The loss of a young life — it’s difficult to understand.”

The district will cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation continues, Wheeler said.

“We do stand by our teachers, staff and students who may need extra support over the coming days, and, of course, this young man’s family.”

A felon released from prison just last month found himself in the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility after trying to elude Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Michael Windom, 22, fled an attempted FCSO traffic stop Jan. 11. He was driving fast and recklessly on Interstate 95, so deputies didn’t pursue his Nissan Altima, for safety reasons.

One day later, deputies spotted the Altima in an apartment complex. Windom tried to run, but deputies caught him and recovered drugs and $600. He was arrested and held in jail on a $56,500 bond.

Deputies catch thief who stole $6,000 necklace

A Ponte Vedra man is in the Flagler County Inmate Facility after stealing a $6,000 necklace from Kay’s Jewelers in Palm Coast.

On Jan. 16, the suspect entered the store and told an employee that he was a professional boxer and had recently won three fights, and was interested in seeing a 10K gold Cuban link necklace.

After the employee handed the suspect the necklace, the suspect ran. Deputies found him in the parking lot of Flagler Palm Coast High School and took him into custody. When they searched him, they found the missing necklace.

He told deputies that he was from Jacksonville, and that he’d chosen the Palm Coast Kay Jewelers because it had fewer customers and was open later than others.

“Your help and information could honor the memory of Noah. Together, we will get justice for Noah and his family.”

Sheriff helps catch car thief What began as an interstate chase of a stolen car reaching speeds of 95 mph came to an end thanks in part to a new K-9 team, Sheriff Rick Staly, deputies from Flagler and Volusia County, and the Florida Highway Patrol.

After a car was stolen in Nassau County, it was tracked near the Flagler County line.

The car thief eventually bailed out and fled across I-95 into a wooded area.

Flagler’s newest K-9 team, DFC Marcus Dawson and K-9 Baro, began tracking the suspect through a dense wooded area, and a citizen called in and said he had seen a subject run across the interstate.

Staly, who was out on one of his Friday night patrols and was on the perimeter near the abandoned stolen car, decided to take his unmarked patrol car and search for the suspect near an old abandoned hotel and nearby gas station on Old Dixie Highway.

As Staly pulled in to the BP gas station, he spotted the suspect near the hedges of the parking lot.

Staly exited his patrol car, pointed his Glock firearm at the suspect and ordered him to freeze, but the suspect ran into woods near the entrance to the Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club.

Deputies from both agencies and the FHP then responded to assist the sheriff and apprehend the suspect.

K-9 Baro tracked right to the suspect and apprehended him with a bite when the suspect did not quickly surrender.

The juvenile, identified as a 16-year-old from Belle Isle, was taken into custody and charged with multiple crimes.

Deputies transported him to AdventHealth Palm Coast for medical clearance and treatment of his dog bite.

He was then transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

THEFT SUSPECT SAYS HE ‘DOESN’T KNOW’ WHY HE’S WEARING GLOVES 7:58 p.m. U.S. 1 at Belle Terre Boulevard.

Grand theft. Deputies responded to a “be on the lookout” alert for a Toyota Camry stolen from Jacksonville. When they found it, “The driver was wearing a latex glove on his right hand and a black ski mask,” the deputy wrote in an arrest report.

“The passenger was also seen wearing latex gloves on both his hands.”

The driver said he’d bought the vehicle, but didn’t remember who he’d bought it from.

When a deputy asked the passenger, a teenager, why he was wearing gloves, “he stated he did not know.”

Deputies arrested both of them.

SUSPECT RUBBER BANDS DRUGS TO GROIN 11:44 p.m. State Road 100 at U.S. 1.

Possession of drugs. Thanks to a drug-sniffing dog, drugs were found at a traffic stop.

When the passenger was placed in a patrol car, he said that since he was going to jail and would be searched there anyway, he wanted to let deputies know that he had more drugs with him.

A deputy asked him where.

“They are rubber banded next to my nuts,” the man said. “That’s why you guys couldn’t find anything.”

The passenger “stated that he was willing to retrieve these items from this area if we could facilitate this for him,” the deputy wrote in an arrest report.

The drugs turned out to be meth and cannabis. Deputies arrested the man.

Flagler Cares is hosting an open house event to celebrate the launch of the Flagler County Village, a centrally located hub where organizations with a shared commitment to assisting vulnerable residents can co-locate program staff to create a “no wrong door” access point for health, behavioral health, financial, and housing supports. The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 24 at the Flagler County Village, located at City Marketplace, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite B302.

Flagler Cares will host and oversee the development of the Flagler County Village.

The Village is active now with staff from each of the four current partners (listed below) and holds walk-in hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. More information about the Village and its partners can be found at www.flaglercountyvillage.org.

On services they will be providing at the Village, the partners each had this to say: Flagler Cares: “We will host and manage Village development as well as provide needs screening/referral, financial counseling, disability application assistance, homelessness prevention, and behavioral health/health marketplace navigation,” said Carrie Baird, Executive Director.

Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia: “We will provide early learning resources, referral, and child

care support services to families in Flagler County,” said D.J. Lebo, Chief Executive Officer.

Healthy Start Coalition of Flagler and Volusia Counties: “Our staff will be offering access to Healthy Start’s CONNECT services and wraparound supports for pregnant women and families with young children (ages 0-3). Women and babies will be able to sign up and receive care coordination, home visiting, nursing, and intensive support at the new office in Flagler County Village,” said Gabrielle Bargerstock, Executive Director.

The House Next Door: “We plan to provide parenting services, mental health services, and our Putnam/ Flagler CARES program will also be working out of the Village,” said Jennifer Nadelkov, Chief Executive Officer.

The Flagler County Village initiative has been made possible by sponsorships from AdventHealth Palm Coast and AdventHealth Palm Coast Foundation.

“AdventHealth is very pleased to support the mission of Flagler County Village,” said Dr. Paul Mucciolo, medical director of the emergency department at AdventHealth Palm Coast. “Every day in the emergency room, we treat many of our Flagler County neighbors who are struggling with issues including access to mental health care. Having this ‘one-stop-shop’ to connect residents with the services they need will help us address pressing challenges to the health of our community.”

Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast high schools could return to a seven-period day beginning next school year.

The item appears to be headed to next month’s School Board agenda.

Currently, the high schools operate under a modified block schedule. Under that schedule, all teachers have their planning periods before school starts. In a sevenperiod day they would be able to have a period set aside for planning during the school day.

District staff presented the School Board with information on switching to a seven-period day at the board’s information workshop Jan. 18.

“We have not had planning inside the school day since the 2010 to 2011 school year,” said Bobby Bossardet, assistant superintendent for academic services.

Teachers would be able to schedule their planning periods with other teachers of the same subjects and be able to collaborate with their peers, said Louise Bossardet, Flagler Schools’ coordinator of data quality.

In a seven-period day, classes would be 47 minutes long, which would extend instruction time by about four minutes per class, compared to an 86-minute block for a one-semester class. With the first semester typically shorter than the second semester, the seven-period day would

allow for more consistency, Bobby Bossardet said.

Two or three additional teachers would probably have to be hired under the plan, Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt said.

State assessments would be limited to the spring. The high school day would be about 15 minutes longer, beginning at 8:10 a.m. and ending at 2:40 p.m. Currently the high school day runs from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Because of bus schedules, middle school and elementary school schedules would also be affected. The middle school day would begin five minutes earlier at 7:20 a.m. and continue to end at 1:40 p.m.

Elementary school days would no longer have a staggered start, with all five schools starting at 9:10 a.m. and ending at 3:40 p.m.

In a survey among teachers at both high schools, about

80% were in favor of moving to a seven-period day. Many of the teachers who wanted to remain with the current schedule were in favor of switching but believed next school year would be too soon, Louise Bossardet said.

School Board member Cheryl Massaro asked if the extended day would force athletes to miss class time when they have away games.

Bobby Bossardet said surrounding districts have later school days than Flagler, so departure times should not be earlier.

The board generally appeared to be in favor of the change.

“I’m thrilled we are doing this,” said board member Colleen Conklin. “I’m so glad we’re addressing this now.”

Mittelstadt told board members, “The next step, if you approve start and end times, is we can bring this forward in February.”

Committee to analyze dress codes Any changes to the school district’s dress code would begin with a committee.

“The proposed plan moving forward is based on stakeholder feedback,” John Fanelli, the district’s coordinator of student supports and behavior, told the School Board during its Jan. 18 information workshop.

The committee would include more parents, students and community members than Flagler Schools employees, he said. School administrators, teachers and noninstructional personnel would be included in addition to representatives

of community groups and student government.

After the committee meets, two townhall meetings would be scheduled before a proposal is presented to the School Board, he added.

Fanelli said there have been 191 dress code referrals involving 142 students this school year. He said students are given multiple warnings and parents are contacted before a referral is given.

Fanelli said elementary and secondary students will likely continue to have different dress codes, but that would depend on what the committee decides.

Access to school library books could become more complicated with a new district proposal.

LaShakia Moore, the district’s director of teaching and learning, presented a three-tiered approach to the School Board at its information workshop on Jan. 18.

Each level would provide a limitation to students’ access to media center materials.

Level one would provide open access with parents required to approve young adult books for elementary school students and adult books for secondary students.

Level two would allow parents to submit up to five books they do not want their children to read.

Level three would be the most restrictive. Parents would pre-approve which books their child is allowed to check out. Moore said this approach has already been tried out with families in some schools.

“For levels two and three, we want families to first meet with a media specialist,” Moore said.

For those levels, a media specialist or media aide would help families set up an account where they could read reviews and more information about the books and ideally have a conversation at home, she said.

“We want parents to sit with media specialists, literacy coaches, administrators,” Moore said. “We’re going to move forward with empow-

ering parents with videos. We also want parents to know the media specialists and aides are available to meet.”

She said the district would push out information to families on the district and school websites.

Details of the procedure would still need to be worked out.

“It’s important we make sure we inform our students so they can be part of the conversation,” she said.

Board member Colleen Conklin asked that with the new opt-out procedure, would the controversial book “All Boys Aren’t Blue” be restored to high school shelves? Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt said the procedure would have to be hammered out and approved first. Mittelstadt was pleased with the process so far.

George was an entrepreneur and owned three pharmacies with his partners Walter Minix, Joe Corgan, Randy Margrave, and the late Jim Paquette. George continued to own and operate Holly Hill Pharmacy until he retired in 2019. He then turned the operation over to his son Dr. Tom Hill.

George was a lover of all sports-he was a fan of anything that included a ball.

George especially loved golf and was an avid player on a team for many years at Palm Harbor golf club where he won many titles. He played twice a week regularly with his team and hit golf balls on the weekend. When George wasn’t playing golf, he played tennis. George was a huge fan of baseball ever since he was a kid. His favorite team was the Boston Red Sox. He went to many of their games at Fenway Park and traveled to all the major ball fields in the USA. He

t has been nearly 54 years since Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot, yet his message still resonates with children today.

Bunnell Elementary School teacher Nina deBodisco has long incorporated activities relating to Martin Luther King Jr. Day into her lessons and is always uplifted by their enthusiasm in the class projects, their personal analyses of his messages and their motivation to go beyond the classwork.

“That is when I know it is a good lesson,” she said.

DeBodisco’s three fifthgrade English Language Arts classes each worked together last week to produce a mural of King. The students created agamographs featuring a picture of King and another of a dove with the caption, “Peace.” They each chose a quote from the civil rights leader and explained its meaning in their own words.

DeBodisco asked some of her students what they got out of the MLK lessons. Here are a few of their responses: “You should never fight with your hands, only your words.” — Emma Z. “Dr. King was brave because he stood up and said that all people should be treated fairly and the same.” — Aubrey G. “Dr. King inspired other

people to stand up against people who look down on them. It teaches me that I should always stand up against bullies.” — Allysen.

that told a story about a class learning about MLK. Agamographs, named after Israeli sculptor Yaacov Agam, are two or more separate pictures that are cut into strips, alternated and pasted on a page with each strip folded in alternate directions to make an accordion fold. The result is one picture changes into the other as the viewer looks from side to side.

Each of deBodsico’s classes produced a mural of King with each student responsible for coloring in one square. The students then pieced together the squares to recreate the mural. One class decided to use uniform colors for its mural. Another class voted to allow each student to choose their own colors. The result was Dr. King’s face had three different colors.

“That was really cool,” deBodsico said.

One student, Reagan Rodriguez, sketched her own portrait of Dr. King.

“She’s amazing,” deBodisco said. “She has a strong interest in art. That’s what she wants to pursue as a career.”

DeBodisco said the activities helped the students cooperate with each other and achieve something together.

“My goal in these lessons was for the students to learn how Dr. King was able to effect change through strong words and tireless leadership,”

YOUR TOWN AMERICAN LEGION TO HOST ‘FOUR CHAPLAINS’ On Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m., American Post 115 will host a memorial service dedicated to the Four Chaplains, in coordination with many other local Veterans Organizations. This service is open to the public and all are invited, at VFW Post 8696, 47 N. Old Kings Road.

The event’s origins date to 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 3, 1943, when the USAT Dorchester was torpedoed and sunk off Greenland. Of the 902 young military men on board, only 230 survived. Many of the survivors owed their lives to the courage and leadership exhibited by the heroic four chaplains, who in sacrificing their lives created a unique legacy of brotherhood. The four chaplains inspired many by giving up their own lifejackets to others. They were last seen on the deck of the sinking ship, with their arms linked together, and their heads bowed in prayer. Each chaplain received the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. Visit www.fourchaplains.org.

JAZZ SEASON BEGINS The Northeast Florida Jazz Association kicked off its 2022 season with a Meet the Beat membership drive.

JERRY CAMERON RECEIVES REGIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD The Northeast Florida Regional Council announced the winners of the 2021 Northeast Florida Regional Leadership Awards last week at its 19th-annual Regional Awards for Excellence and Elected Officials Luncheon. The top award, the Regional Leadership Award, was given to recently retired Flagler County Administrator Jerry Cameron.

Cameron has worked as a civil servant in counties across the region throughout his career, including serving as police chief and the city manager in Fernandina Beach and assistant county administrator in St. Johns County.

Other award winners included the Flagler County Fire Rescue Community Paramedicine Program in the Healthcare/Emergency Preparedness category.

WOMAN WHO PUT COLLEGE ON HOLD FOR 20 YEARS TO RAISE HER KIDS, IS BACK AT SCHOOL Pamela Spurrell, a student at Stetson University, was awarded a P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education Grant from the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was sponsored by P.E.O. Chapter CJ of Palm Coast, Florida.

Spurrell is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Global Development/ International Business. Spurrell had completed two years of college when she had to stop her education in order to work and raise her three children. Spurrell resumed her academic study last year after a 20-year break from academia. She now has

just three semesters to go to reach her goal of a degree.

The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education was established in 1973 to provide need-based grants to women in the U.S. and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and/ or their families.

Chapter CJ has been a part of the Palm Coast community since it was organized in 1962.

lagler Palm Coast boys basketball coach Derrick Williams said he realized early in the fourth quarter that the Bulldogs’ annual crosstown-rivalry game with Matanzas would come down to the final shot.

And he had no doubt who was going to shoot it for his team.

It was Alex Aviles’ night.

The 5-foot-10 senior guard scored a season-high 32 points, including the final three baskets for FPC, as the Bulldogs edged the Pirates 66-64 on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at FPC. “I feel Alex is one of the best guards in the two counties, and he made plays for us,” Williams said.

Aviles was hot from the opening tip, scoring 14 points, including two 3-pointers, in the first quarter. But he and his coach weren’t satisfied.

“Coach is always saying, ‘Attack, attack, attack,’” Aviles said. “In the first half, I was shooting a little too much. Coach told me to attack, so I did.”

He hit a driving layup with 2:39 left to put the home team up 62-61 and then knocked down a 12-foot jumper in the lane to make it 64-61.

After Matanzas tied the score at 64-64 with Dawson Tanner’s technical-foul free throw and a layup in the post from Ty Smith, Aviles drove the lane again to put the Bulldogs up 66-64 with 1:13 left.

Matanzas fell to 0-12, but seven of those losses have been by single digits. This was the Pirates’ third two-point loss in coach Henry Robinson’s debut season.

After falling behind 53-47, Tanner, who scored 14 points, hit two free throws to tie the score at 57-57 with 5:15 remaining.

The teams went back and forth the rest of the way. After Matanzas missed in the final minute, FPC tried to run out the clock with its two-point lead. Robinson yelled to his players to foul. They finally did, with 6.7 seconds left.

“I guess nobody heard,” Tanner said. “It was loud, really loud.

Finally, they heard.”

FPC was not yet in the bonus, so the Bulldogs had to inbound just past half court. Williams told junior Karl Knighten to catch the ball in the backcourt and run out the clock.

But the pass was not quite in the backcourt. Knighten caught it in the air, landed behind the half-court line and was called for a backcourt violation with 4.7 seconds left.

opportunity. Robinson told his players to try to pass the ball into the post to Smith, who led the Pirates with 24 points. But Smith was double-teamed.

“I told Rene (Corvo), ‘If the ball comes to you, you have to get the shot off,’’’ Robinson said.

Corvo, received the pass and tried to dribble. Knighten quickly pounced, stealing the ball and running out the clock.

“I really gambled on that,” Knighten said. “I shouldn’t have gone for it, but he lost the ball, and it was on the ground.”

The Bulldogs, who improved to 7-10 with the win, have been no strangers to close games themselves. This was their third game in a row that was decided by four points or less and their second straight close win.

“This was a rivalry game,” Knighten said. “So, the records are out the window. They’re going to try to give us their best shot.”

There was no boisterous celebration after the Pirates’ first win of the season.

One day after suffering an emotional two-point loss to arch-rival Flagler Palm Coast, the Matanzas boys basketball players were subdued after ending a 12-game losing streak.

The Pirates held off a feisty Seabreeze team 65-63 on Jan. 13 at Matanzas.

“They’re just relieved. There was nothing to celebrate,” said Matanzas first-year coach Henry Robinson. “But it feels good to finally get it. Our record doesn’t indicate what kind of team we have.”

The Sandcrabs, meanwhile, came up just short in their quest to notch their own first win of the season. Down 65-63, Seabreeze had two chances in the final seven seconds. Cole Nettles missed a driving layup. Gio Mitchell grabbed the offensive rebound but couldn’t convert at the buzzer.

Seabreeze led for most of the game, which was reminiscent of its threepoint overtime loss to Fort Myers Bishop Verot on Dec. 30.

“This has been a pretty rough season,” Seabreeze coach Pepper Johnson said. “We just have to get over the hump. We have two guys who came in with varsity experience, so we’re just going through growing pains. I’m going to keep coaching hard, and keep motivating.”

Sophomore Tariq Shakir led the Pirates with a career-high 25 points and eight assists. Jude Lukaszewki added 11 points, and Ty Smith scored 10.

Cole Long led the Sadncrabs with 17 points, while Mitchell had 15 points and Jordan Calder scored 14.

The game was the second of a grueling six-game stretch over eight days for Matanzas.

Seabreeze fell to 0-13 with a loss to Atlantic on Jan. 14.

Secret weapons propel Pirates to semifinals Matanzas’ boys wrestling team saved a couple of secret weapons for their regional duals — a couple of freshmen who had never wrestled against boys in a high school competition.

Mariah Mills and Tianna Fries mowed down their opponents as easily as they have in matches against girls.

They each recorded pins against host Neptune Beach Fletcher in the Region 1-2A quarterfinals on Jan. 13.

“It’s something we’d been thinking about for a while,” coach T.J. Gillin said. “We have all the confidence in the world in them. They get after it hard. They’re the full package.

Without Mariah and Tianna, we don’t get past Fletcher.”

The Pirates defeated Fletcher 44-36 but lost to district foe New Smyrna Beach 44-29 in the regional semifinals. The Barracudas will face Fleming Island at Kissimmee Osceola.

When Karissa Jackson joined the Matanzas High School girls weightlifting team last year, there were no recorded school records for the 139-pound weight class.

Now, the records need to be written in pencil. They change just about every time Jackson competes.

Jackson set a new record total at a dual meet against Seabreeze on Jan. 12. She bench-pressed 160 pounds and lifted 140 in the clean and jerk for a personal- and school-record total of 300 pounds. That total placed sixth at last year’s Class 2A state meet.

Not bad for the senior honor student and Matanzas’ Student School Board member who hardly lifted a weight before joining the team last season.

Coach Jeremy Ossler was looking for girls to join the team last season when numbers were down, with some students opting for remote learning. He asked Jackson, who is a defender on the Pirates’ lacrosse team, if she was interested.

“Friends convinced me to do it,” she said.

of the Matanzas Honor Society and vice president of the Leo Club and was a member of the Flagler Youth Orchestra for 10 years — doesn’t go into any endeavor halfway.

“It’s one of those things I think she found a passion for,” Ossler said.

Her only previous experience in the weight room was during preseason conditioning for lacrosse. She said, as a freshman, she struggled to lift the bar up.

She said she doesn’t know what happened to her between 10th and 11th grade, but she obviously got a

lot stronger.

In her first season last year, Jackson finished fourth at districts in the 139-pound class with a 120-115—235 to qualify for regionals. This season, she wants to qualify for state.

With her steady improvement, she could wind up winning a medal.

“I love weightlifting,” she said.

“Everyone is so supportive in the weight room. Even the girls from other teams support you and cheer you on. It’s a judgment-free zone.

Nobody judges you if you lift 45 pounds.”

FPC wrestling team advances to state duals tournament FPC wrestling coach Zach Sanford was home quarantining, and celebrating, when the Bulldogs won their regional quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Jan. 13 to advance to the state duals tournament for the first time.

He pre-celebrated before the season when he saw that state power Fleming Island had dropped down to Class 2A. Fleming Island has been a regional foe since the FHSAA added a duals state tourney in 2018.

“We’ve always been stuck behind Fleming,” Sanford said.

“As soon as I saw they moved to 2A, I said, ‘We’re gonna go to states.’”

And they are. They will meet Oviedo Hagerty in the Region 1-3A final on Jan. 21 at the state duals tournament at Kissimmee Osceola High School. The winner will advance to the Class 3A state semifinals on Jan. 22 against Wellington or Fort Pierce Central, with the championship match following.

Last week, the Bulldogs traveled to Creekside High School in St. Johns, where they defeated Oakleaf 45-27 in a regional quarterfinal and then knocked off district foe DeLand 42-36 in the semifinal. Tim King (152), Bryce Dodge (160), Blane DeFord (170) and Marcel Gonzalez (182) all pinned their opponents.

Seth Davis (285) won by decision in the semifinal’s second match. Kole Hannant (120) and John Hald (126) also pinned their opponents, and Garrick Schwartz (195) clinched the victory over DeLand with a 3-1 decision.

Sanford expects to be back with his team for state.

Pirates girls basketball team beats Bulldogs for the first time.

Na’Riya Perry was down to her last chance to achieve a two-year-old goal, and she wasn’t going to let it slip away.

Perry scored a game-high 13 points as the Matanzas girls basketball team made history on Jan. 14, defeating cross-town rival Flagler Palm Coast for the first time, 39-35, at the Bulldogs’ gym.

“It feels phenomenal,” said Perry, who transferred to Matanzas from FPC two years ago. “When I switched over, this was my goal — to make history.”

The senior point guard drained 7 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Pirates (4-12) hold off a Bulldogs team that wasn’t going to go down easily.

Matanzas jumped out to a ninepoint lead (36-27) with 2:58 remaining in a game where points were hard to come by. But FPC (3-12) whittled the margin down to two as Naria Hill hit a wide-open layup to make it 37-35 with 1:26 to go.

Boone added nine points for Matanzas, which won its second game in a row after beating DeLand 46-40 the night before.

Remy Montgomery and Eimy Ayala scored 10 points apiece for FPC, which entered the contest with a two-game winning streak.

“I’m proud of how far Na’Riya has come and how far the team has come from the beginning of the year,” said Matanzas coach Brittany Marts. “We had a good crowd tonight. You could see the passion, how much it means to both of these teams.”

Matanzas girls cruise to Lady Pirate Classic wrestling championship Freshmen Mariah Mills and Tianna Fries won individual titles at the home event.

Two days after freshmen Mariah Mills and Tianna Fries wrestled with the Matanzas boys at their regional duals meet — each winning both of their matches — they were back wrestling with the Pirates’ girls team, winning their weight classes at the Lady Pirate Classic on Jan. 15 at Matanzas High School.

Mills, who is ranked fourth in the state among Class 2A girls, won the 105-pound title.

Fries, who returned from injury prior to regional duals, won the 110-pound title, winning by technical fall over sixthranked Cynthia Kowitsky, of Ponte Vedra, in the final.

In addition to the two titles, two Matanzas wrestlers placed second, and three placed third, as the Pirates easily won the team title, 115.5 to 85 over Mainland in the 13-team field. Ponte Vedra (84) was third, followed by Tocoi Creek (59.5).

“A lot of our girls stepped up,” Matanzas coach John White said. “We had a lot of girls in that (consolation) round picking up points for us.”

“A lot of these teams are in our district, so this was a pretty good indicator,” White said.

“So we’re excited.”

Matanzas is still missing two wrestlers with injuries, while senior Angie Gonzalez returned for her first competition of the season and was the runner-up at 125 pounds.

“I wasn’t worried about getting pinned,” said Mills. “I got hold of one of her hands and got control of her.”

Q + A KIRK KELLER, Flagler Broadcasting Sales Manager

‘Listening is the key’ Editor’s Note: This story is lightly edited and republished from Radio Ink, with permission.

lagler Broadcasting President David Ayres says his sales manager, Kirk Keller, “has endless energy and he’s everywhere in the community. It’s relationship selling at its best.” Keller is responsible for eight salespeople at six stations, including WNZF 94.9 and The Beach 92.7. Program Director Kevin Kane told Radio Ink: “Kirk is creative, caring, and savvy.” Keller was a recent Radio Ink Sales Manager of the Week. He spoke with Radio Ink about his career path and secrets to success.

How and why did you choose radio and radio sales as a career?

My radio career began at age 16 in an electronics class in Carthage, Missouri. The guest in the class was Roberta Stone, of KDMO. Roberta was looking for a tech savvy person to work weekends. Three of us went to the station and fell in love with all the buttons, lights and sounds.

When I found out the radio gig involved reading the news at 5 and 10 — I backed out (I hated to read).

By the time I got home, the station had called my mother and requested I return and read the news. Two days later, I am a weekend jock.

A year later, the entire sales team at KDMO walked out on the sales manager, Craig Burford. As a good Christian boy, I was raised to always offer a lending hand, so I did.

Next thing I know, Craig has me reading a phone script selling Christmas greetings. Craig made it clear: “Don’t take no for an answer,” and I didn’t. Ninety days later, Craig informed me that I sold

more greetings than ever before and offered me a part time sales gig after school. I worked for 11 years, earning my way up to sales manager.

Why are you a successful leader?

I do not just hold meetings (I hate meetings). I encourage the team to make appointments, and I go with them. Most of all, I listen to them and to their clients.

How do you spot a great salesperson?

I watch for personality, friendliness, professionalism. Some of the best recruits I have hired were former servers.

How do you keep your team motivated?

I encourage the team to speak up, vent about their clients, vent about their coworkers and even vent about me openly. I encourage and find ways to make the stressful environment fun. If you’re not having fun, leave! Listening is the key.

How do you keep yourself sharp, up on all the trends, ahead of the competition?

Over the past 18 months, what are you most proud of?

My son, now a father and raising our grandson to be a “Keller”; my daughter for working full time, raising her husband (inside joke), and graduating college with honors.

Most of all my wife, for juggling the crazy schedule I keep, for dinner meetings, breakfast meetings, etc., for almost 20 years, while raising two children and, over the years, four dogs.

Workwise, surviving CV19 and only missing budget one month out of 12 (only to make it up in the following quarter).

What advice do you have for other sales managers across the country?

If you are focusing on the competition, you are doing it wrong.

Focus on what your team has done for other clients and their success using your product and service.

Written client testimonials are the key — small, medium, and big markets — they work.

Bob Schroeder, wanting to escape the cold winters of Chicago, bought the business from Tony Lombardo in 1982 in Flagler Beach across from the Flagler Pier. In 1983, Beth Taylor, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, joined the company for a work-study program.

“I had all of my credits to graduate high school and was hired for $3.35 per hour,” Taylor said. “Bob has been an incredible mentor – I am so grateful for his guidance over the years – he’s been like a father to me,” she added.

In 2013, they purchased the Daytona business of Raymond Phelan. Phelan served Volusia County for 46 years.

Bob Schroder became a CPA in 1974. He is also a member of the Estate Planning Council of the Fun Coast and the Flagler County Rotary Club.

BethAnn M. Taylor became a CPA in 2008. She is sits on the boards of Rotary Club of Flagler County and Flagler Volunteer Services.

A developer has won the Flagler County Planning and Development Board’s approval to add a 103,255-square-foot self-storage facility on a 9-acre parcel just west of the northern entrance to Plantation Bay. The board unanimously approved applicant Alann Engineering Group’s application for a site development plan for a Par Storage Palm Coast facility at 2150 S. Old Dixie Highway.

The site will have an air-conditioned three-story self-storage building, plus three non-air conditioned one-story buildings with roll-up doors, county Growth Management Director Adam Mengel told board members at a Jan. 11 board meeting.

Kimberly Buck, an engineer for Alann Engineering Group, said the site plan gives residents a 300-foot buffer.

Developer Paul Nevins, of Par Storage, said the facility will be quiet and will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“We tend to be one of the best neighbors anyone can ever ask for,” he said. “Our whole business model — I’m going to give you a little secret — is we want people to bring their stuff in, close the door and never come back — just pay their bill.”

The facility will have gates, keypads and high-definition security cameras, he said.

“These are not the old storage facilities that were built back in the ‘80s and ‘90s where they put up a chainlink fence and they look like garbage,” he said. “This is a high class facility; it’s going to be worth a lot of money.”

A handful of area resident spoke during the meeting’s public comment period, concerned about noise and compatibility with the area.

But board member Timothy Conner noted that the parcel’s zoning would allow for much noisier additions, like a strip mall.

Pace recommends that students and their parents take immediate steps to protect the students from any potential harm resulting from the data incident, such as actively monitoring accounts, Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), and credit bureau reports.
