BRIEFS Small plane crashes on Interstate 95 A single-engine aircraft crashed on Interstate 95 in Flagler County Jan. 31, leaving its occupants with minor injuries after it lost power and struck the road’s northbound lanes near mile marker 279. The plane was flown by a 34-year-old pilot and 57-year-old co-pilot, both residents of Port Orange, according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol. Its wing clipped a tractor trailer driven by a 36-year-old Yulee resident as it crashed shortly before 1 p.m. Northbound traffic was backed up for about 7 miles.

World War II veteran celebrates 106th birthday His salute was as sharp as ever. After the presentation of colors and the pledge of allegiance, surrounded by friends, family, community leaders and fellow veterans, Edmund J. DiBianco celebrated his 106th birthday on Feb. 1, at the VFW. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, DiBianco

decided to enlist in the U.S. Army, according to a presentation at the birthday celebration. He entered active duty June 1, 1943, and later was a Normandy invader. He was injured in Northern France and was awarded an honorable discharge on June 4, 1945. He received many honors and medals for his service. Afterward, he returned home to

New York and became a lawyer. He moved to Palm Coast in 1967. His wife, Kathryn, died Oct. 13, 1992, 50 years to the day after they were married. DiBianco later adopted three children and supported them through college. Also served as a Guardian Ad Litem to help young people.

“Mr. Edmund DiBianco has been a true American hero,” said the VFW’s Tom Piekarski, “a loving family man, a concerned and involved citizen of the United States and Palm Coast. We are proud to call Ed a fellow American veteran.” — BRIAN MCMILLAN
