Committee shortlists nine superintendent candidates

A citizen committee selected the names of nine applicants for the school district’s superintendent position — including four with close ties to the Flagler County School District — Feb. 11 to pres-

ent to the School Board for additional consideration.

The top scorers when the committee narrowed down the 32-candidate list (it started at 35, but three withdrew) were Vernon Orndorff, a former Flagler Schools assistant superintendent who is now a superintendent in Texas; Cathy Mittelstadt, a deputy superintendent in St. Johns County; Earl Johnson, Flagler Schools’ executive director of leadership development; Colleen Conklin, the current Flagler County School Board member and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University assistant professor who

has stepped away from the board in order to apply for the superintendent position; and Janet Womack, an educational consultant in Texas and former superintendent of a district in Alabama.

Orndorff and Mittelstadt received votes of support from 14 committee members, Johnson earned 12, Conklin earned 10 and Womack nine, each clearing the 50%-support mark from the committee (19 of the citizen committee’s 20 members were present or submitted a list of names).

To broaden the number of names that will be forwarded to the School Board, the committee also opted to include the names of the four candidates who received eight votes: Jeff Reaves, the principal of Matanzas High School; Ron Wagner, a Minneapolis school district associate superintendent; Eric Jackson, principal of a high school in Sarasota County; and Matthew Lutz, the assistant superintendent of a school district in North Carolina.

The meeting, which was the citizen committee’s second and final session, was led by Florida School Board Association consultants John Reichert and Bill Vogel.

Several members praised the experience of Mittestadt and Orndorff.

Committee member Jearlyn Dennie said she was impressed

by Reaves, the Matanzas principal. But Katie Hansen, the head of the district’s teachers union, said the while Reaves had done a “fabulous job” as principal, he had no district-level experience, and “that’s a giant leap, from

principal to superintendent.”

Dennie said she had not been been impressed by Orndorff — that she’d called up people he worked with, and “got one positive out of four or five phone calls,” she said.

But other committee members, including Hansen, spoke highly of him. Retired teacher Jill Woolbright, who is running for the School Board District 1 seat, noted that Orndorff had included a letter of recommendation from Sen. Travis Hutson.

She added that she’d spoken to people in the district about him, and “didn’t get one negative,” but the opposite. Committee member Garry Lubi said that his experience with Orndorff had always been “top notch and first class, all the way.”

Several committee members said they had reservations about applicants who’d retired elsewhere and might be more likely to leave soon if they were selected, and about applicants whose experience was with districts with much smaller student populations.

The committee’s list will be officially submitted to the School Board at its Feb. 18 meeting.

The board will meet on Feb. 25 to identify finalists.

Health Department to offer ‘After School’ vaccinations Beginning May 12, the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County will offer the Woman, Infants and Children program and an “After School Vaccination Clinic” the second Tuesday of every month from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., so that working parents have an additional opportunity to access health care for their children.

Children will be able to receive any required or recommended immunizations at no cost through the federally funded Vaccines for Children program, according to a Health Department news release.

Sixth-grade students will be able to receive the Tdap shot (with parental consent) in April, during in-school clinics.

Students can get other adolescent vaccines recommended by the CDC and the American Association of Pediatrics — Meningococcal, HPV and Influenza — at the health department.

DEFINING SEXUAL HARASSMENT Victim says Flagler Schools’ process didn’t work

ne day, it was just too much, and she disappeared.

Laura Lancaster, on the morning of Nov. 7, 2019, was driving on Interstate 95 toward the exit that leads to Matanzas High School. She was a bookkeeper with the Flagler Schools Transportation Department for the past several years, most of which were spent at the main office on State Road 100, near the Flagler Auditorium. But after she was sexually harassed by another employee there, she agreed to be transferred to an isolated office at Matanzas, so that she could keep away from him.

In the car with her that morning were several stuffed animals that she had removed from her State Road 100 office. She hadn’t bothered to take them out of her car because she had hoped the transfer would be temporary. Being at the Matanzas office made it more difficult to do her job — and she felt that it sent a message to her that she was the problem, instead of him. Why not transfer him, and let her keep her office on 100?

Lancaster, 40, had told the district and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in August that the man, a Transportation Department coworker named Emilio Viera, 77, had kissed her on the neck and groped her breasts and buttocks a year earlier. She told the district about three other incidents that also made her uncomfortable.

He admitted to kissing her on the neck but nothing more.

She had been sexually abused for 14 years as a younger woman, and the recent incidents traumatized her to the point that she attempted to kill herself in July.

As she was driving on Nov. 9, 2019, she felt ashamed. Ignored.

On an impulse, she passed Exit 293 and kept driving. Past St. Augustine to the north, she pulled over at a rest stop. She cuddled with her stuffed animals, and she cried.

She didn’t go to work that day.

She didn’t leave the rest area. She barely left her car.

Two days passed.

Finally, a Jacksonville police officer knocked on her car window.

AFRAID BUT ‘FROZEN’

The trouble began in May 2018, she said, when Viera kissed her and touched her. He later told deputies that he thought she had given him signals that the advances would be welcome. She said she gave him no signals; she pushed him away and hid in the bathroom.

The following day, Lancaster said, Viera drove down Bulldog Drive, following her car, honking his horn, flashing his lights, cutting her off, almost causing a T-bone collision, then getting out and banging on her window. She covered her ears, hit reverse and got away.

He denied it. A misunderstanding.

“If I was put through this, I can only imagine how many students have been ignored. I can only imagine a poor child trying to go through this.”

She said she felt afraid of him as a result, and she started keeping a pocketknife with her.

She debated whether she should report it because she didn’t want to lose her job. She kept quiet.

The memories of her past sexual abuse “froze me in my steps,” she said in a recent interview with the Palm Coast Observer. “I know a lot of people don’t understand how you can freeze up and not do anything.”

USING THE KNIFE

Months later, in April 2019, she said that he made comments about her tattoo and other sexually suggestive comments about her to others. She told her supervisor.

In July 2019, she said, Viera winked at her in a suggestive way, and she lost it. She felt traumatized by the May 2018 incident still, and she began cutting her wrists.

“I went into a mental breakdown,” she recalled in a recent interview. “Instead of using the pocketknife on him, I used it on myself.”

She was Baker Acted and treated at Halifax Health, then at Palm Point Behavioral Health, where she told counselors that the triggers for her mental breakdown were her “work location” and “harassment.” She was discharged on July 22, 2019.

A counselor, Lancaster said, encouraged her to make a formal report of the May 2018 incident.

It could be the only way to move past it.

So Lancaster took the counselor’s advice. She submitted a complaint to Flagler Schools, claiming she had been sexually harassed. She then arranged to meet a deputy in the Target parking lot, and she explained what had happened. She also requested a restraining order against Viera, which a judge granted, with the condition that Viera be allowed to continue working from the State Road 100 office — but at a safe distrance from her.

Lancaster didn’t feel comfortable at the State Road 100 office, so the district agreed to let her work at the Matanzas office, and the district investigated her complaint. And it got complicated.

DISTRICT INVESTIGATION

“It’s not that we didn’t believe her,” School Board Attorney Kristy Gavin said in a recent interview.

“She requested counseling, so we set her up with counseling. We said we would accommodate her if she needed to leave work.”

Lancaster also had complained about a hostile work environment, unrelated to the Viera situation, but that wasn’t admissible in the investigation of sexual harassment.

“She said she wasn’t comfortable coming back to work because of the other employees in the office,” Gavin said. “She wanted to have that situation resolved before she came back to the compound.

There’s other dynamics going on.”

Gavin said Lancaster made it clear that she preferred to stay at Matanzas, rather than the 100 office. That was true, but Lancaster was under the impression after an Aug. 27 meeting with the district that she would be at Matanzas temporarily. It was difficult to perform her bookkeeping duties on the other side of the county from the majority of the employees for whom she was

performing payroll services.

“My job suffered because I moved,” Lancaster recalled in a recent interview. “Payroll was going in late. People weren’t getting paid for their trips because they couldn’t get the paperwork to me in time” at the remote office.

She felt she was being punished for what Viera did.

“For somebody who just tried to commit suicide, putting them in an office by themselves ...” she said, her voice trailing off.

But when the district interviewed Viera, Gavin said, “He apologized and seemed remorseful. ... Because of the years he had with us, and not having any prior discipline, it didn’t rise to the level of a support of his termination.”

That’s why Gavin believes Lancaster is still upset and has since filed a grievance: “The tipping point for Ms. Lancaster was that we did not terminate him. That’s her issue.”

AGAINST THE POLICY OR NOT?

After multiple meetings with the district, after contacting all five School Board members, after thinking she was being listened to, Lancaster was shocked by the verdict from Chief Human Resources Officer Jewel Johnson.

The “one year old allegation of sexual harassment,” Johnson wrote on Oct. 17, 2019, “ ... did not meet the definition required for a finding of sexual harassment.”

While Viera had not admitted to everything Lancaster accused

him of, he did admit to kissing her on the neck. That was enough for the State Attorney’s Office to press a charge of battery, a misdemeanor, against Viera.

Why wasn’t it enough for the Johnson to consider it sexual harassment? Lancaster wondered.

Meanwhile, a letter was placed in Viera’s personnel file on the same date, Oct. 17, 2019, informing him that he had been found guilty of violating the same policy — 662 — for inappropriate touching. “Any further action of this nature may result in further disciplinary action up to and including termination,” the district stated.

Lancaster doesn’t understand how Viera could be reprimanded for violation Policy 662, but she was told it had not fit the definition in Policy 662.

“I think their policies need to be looked at,” she said.

GOING HOME

Nov. 7, 2019. The police officer knocked on her window. Lancaster had been in the car for two days, leaving only to buy a drink from a vending machine at the rest area.

“Your family is worried about you,” the officer said. “They want you to come home.”

When she got home, Lancaster’s husband of more than 20 years was waiting for her with open arms.

“I got out of the car, and him and my daughter embraced me,” Lancaster recalled. “He held me, and he told me never to scare him like that again.”

For the next two months, Lancaster stayed in her home, rarely getting out of bed. She was in a state of massive depression, she said.

But she started sharing her story on social media, and the support came pouring in. Now, she is threatening to sue the disSEE HARASSMENT PAGE 6

The Palm Coast City Council has generally met four times a month, with a business meeting the first and third Tuesday of the month, and a workshop the second and final Tuesday of the month.

But the council has decided to eliminate the second workshop of the month — the one that falls on the last Tuesday — leaving only one per month.

The schedule for business meetings is unchanged.

The council discussed the proposal during a workshop on Jan. 28, 2019, and the change has been implemented starting this month.

City Manager Matt Morton noted that the council has had a series of recent workshops with light agendas, averaging 82 minutes.

“It began to feel, at least from my perspective, that the council is showing up to serve the agenda rather than the agenda serving the council and our community,” he said.

Occasionally, the board has very long workshops, he said, but those are one-off events where the board is dealing with an unusually heavy agenda, as sometimes occurs

“I want to challenge all residents of Palm Coast to exercise at least 90 miles in 90 days. Those small steps, taken day after day, add up to an active lifestyle.”

Holland Park playground closes for repairs The playground at Holland Park, at 18 Florida Park Drive, closed Wednesday, Feb. 5, for maintenance, according to a news release from the city of Palm Coast. It will remain closed until further notice.

The closure was prompted when a portion of the stone veneer on the sugar mill structure at the playground fell off, raising safety concerns.

City shares UNF MedNex renderings The proposed UNF health care training campus will need financial backing from the state.

The Palm Coast city government has shared renderings of a proposed University of North Florida health care training facility called UNF MedNex that — if it gets funding support from the state government — would be built in Palm Coast’s Town Center.

The facility would serve as a hub for regional healthcare training, partnering with major medical facilities and preparing students for positions such as physician assistant, occupational therapist, genetic counselor, audiologist, nurse anesthetist and others.

Together, those professions have an average annual salary of $76,000, according to a flier

about MedNex released by the city, and the state is expected to see 23% job growth in health care between 2016 and 2024, accounting for 200,000 new jobs.

The renderings released by the city show MedNex as a futuristic building with a planted roof, lined by palm trees and overlooking a pond.

Sen. Travis Hutson, speaking by phone on Flagler Broadcasting’s “Free For All Friday” radio program on Feb. 7, said the Legislature is still in the negotiations for funding. The state university system has requested $12 million for MedNex. “We’re working as hard as we can to try to get it done for you,” he said. “I think the biggest hurdle we’re running into is, there’s only so much money to go around in the budget, and where’s that sweet spot on how many dollars can we get to try to get the programs going? And we’re trying to push for every single dollar. So, we’re not settling for something

Flagler County had fewer traffic fatalities last year than in previous years ­­— with 11 deaths, according to the Florida Department of Transportation, 2019 was the lowest year since 2015 — but the county has already seen multiple deadly crashes since the start of 2020.

A Jan. 24 motorcycle crash that killed a 14-year-old Palm Coast boy on Blare Castle Drive added a sense of urgency to the Community Traffic Safety Team’s Feb. 11 discussion of strategies for reducing speeding in residential areas.

The team, which meets monthly, includes representatives of local government bodies and organizations. It makes recommendations, but doesn’t make policy itself.

Blare Castle seems to have an issue with speed, School Board member and CTST Chairman Andy Dance said at the meeting.

City of Palm Coast traffic engineer Michael Grunewald said the city is looking at options to discourage speeding on roads like Blare Castle.

Its geometry is like that of a lot of city streets — a straightway, a bend and then another straightaway, he said. That can entice people to speed.

“We’re going to do something,” he said.

More deputies would be the easy answer, he said, but law enforcement can’t be there 24/7. Speed humps are expensive to put in, and can be a nuisance to the neighborhood. The city is looking at other possible improvements.

County Commissioner Joe Mullins said he’s also heard concerns from residents in the Woodlands area about speeding, and resident Celia Pugliese said she’s had concerns about traffic speeds on Cooper Lane and Casper Lane and proposed speed humps.

CITY CONSIDERING OPTIONS FOR SEMINOLE WOODS BLVD

Traffic has been periodically backing up on Seminole Woods Boulevard approaching State Road 100, and the city is looking at the possibility of adding an eastbound right turn lane.

Whether or not it does so will rely on approval from FDOT, said Tyler Gibson, the city’s project coordinator for traffic.

“We’re very close to capacity at that intersection for most of a typical day,” Grunewald said.

“We’re experiencing just wildly fluctuating traffic arrivals, and it’s from every approach.”

The city is also looking into resident reports the traffic is backing up onto Palm Coast Parkway from the Dunkin’ Donuts on that road, he said.

Don’t restrict public immensely from performing not intending to speak, chose attacks, but we are prepared comments because arts programs. Without this to stand and speak. This was for this. I implore you to leverof transgender debate background story and under- unprompted and unscripted, age enforcement of the existing Dear Editor: I recently read an article in the Palm Coast Observer that indicated the School Board is considering additional restriction on public comment at public board meetings.

Oral history and our sharing of personal experience is a cornerstone of what it means to be a human being in a connected society. How can we relate to one another without understanding each other’s stories and how our actions affect one another?

Two summers ago, I spoke to the board during public comment urging them to keep the Indian Trails Middle School choral program alive. The same members on the board then are still on the board now. The board appeared very appreciative of the stories I shared of how my then-daughter loved the choral program and how kids benefit

I am asking the board to consider how restricting personal stories might diminish how the board relates to very personal issues affecting students and families.

For the past two meetings, a speaker during public comment has shared some harsh comments. Some of those comments were directed toward my family. While these comments upset me, I recognize an individual’s right to voice an opinion that is different than my own. While I do not agree with this person’s viewpoint, I do not dismiss it, nor have I asked the board to restrict this speaker’s comments.

As of Nov. 7, 2019, Lancaster resigned from her job at Flagler Schools. She felt she had

no choice. She sought relief from the state’s Reemployment Assistance Program, which responded to her decision to quit in a Jan. 31, 2020, letter, acknowledging that Lancaster quit because of “conflicts with co-worker(s).” The letter states that she “made a reasonable effort to resolve these conflicts.”

It blamed Flagler Schools for the loss of her job: “The reason for quitting was with good cause

but incredibly powerful. The article stated the board was considering having speakers fill out cards highlighting their intended topic. I feel this would squash this type of movement and restrict people from following their hearts as they did in the last meeting. The use of cards would impede our public from speaking unless planned.

Life is seldom a series of planned events; sometimes we follow our hearts. Don’t restrict that.

I know that, at times, my comments have drifted from the central issue of protecting LGBTQ youth. I will endeavor to keep my public comments focused to that end. I feel this is the greatest country in the world, not because we can speak, but that others are allowed to speak against our viewpoints.

I understand that my requests can potentially open my family and me up to terribly personal

policy on public comment but keep the policy unchanged.

Moreover, the letter states that Lancaster is entitled to any benefits she should have received since she quit in November. Flagler Schools has until Feb. 20 to appeal the ruling.

“I love that letter,” Lancaster said in a recent interview. “That makes me happy. Somebody actually seen where the wrongdoing was. The school district did wrong. How they handled the whole situation was wrong.”

In her upcoming appeal and planned lawsuit, she knows she

will need to tell her story over and over. She’s nervous about that, but she feels it’s worth it.

She is fighting the ruling that it was not sexual harassment — and the loss of her job — because she wants to show others who feel they are victimized that it’s OK to come forward.

“If I was put through this, I can only imagine how many students have been ignored,” Lancaster said. “I can only imagine a poor child trying to go through this.”

The developer who is proposing to build homes on the Matanzas Woods golf course submitted initial documents to the city Jan. 29.

The proposed master plan development agreement, or MPD, shows a mixture of single family homes and commercial space, plus some multifamily housing.

This is the first time the proposal — which would involve construction of about 300 homes — has come before Palm Coast city staff, although developer Alex Ustilovsky of Hammock Real Estate presented it in community meeting in December.

Some L-Section residents have also received public notices from the Army Corps of Engineers about a potential townhouse development with 188 units.

This development — in a rectangle of land bordered by London Drive, Londonderry Drive and Longfellow Drive — is unrelated to the Matanzas Woods golf course property MPD. The city has not yet received any official submittals about it from the owner, according to city Chief Development Officer Jason DeLorenzo, but the land is already zoned multifamily.

Deputies arrest co-conspirators for 2018 shooting that injured man in Palm Coast’s W-Section By: Brittany Kershaw Public Affairs Manager, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two coconspirators in connection with a shooting that injured a Palm Coast man in 2018. The shooter herself was arrested a day after the shooting, and pleaded guilty.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit obtained two arrest warrants on Tuesday, Feb. 4, for 18-year-old Jimaya Baker and 20-year-old Diovion Smith regarding an armed robbery that took place during the early morning hours on Oct. 16, 2018 on White Star Drive in Palm Coast.

During that incident, the then-19-year-old victim, Carl Saint Felix, was shot and severely injured in a botched robbery. The shooting left the victim disabled.

was quickly able to identify the involved parties. The shooter, Princess Williams, now 22, was arrested on Oct. 17, 2018, and charged with Attempted First Degree Murder with a Firearm, Attempted Robbery with a Firearm, and Attempted Burglary while Armed. She recently plead guilty to all charges and will be sentenced in July.

The investigation continued past the arrest of the shooter and corroborating evidence was gathered that clearly established the roles of two others, Jimaya Baker and Diovion Smith.

“These accomplices probably thought they had gotten away with this crime,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “But, our investigators continued to work this case thoroughly in order to identify all of the accomplices. While we all like to close cases immediately and did quickly arrest the shooter, the case doesn’t always end there and additional follow-up is needed in order to identify all aspects of the incident.”

The FCSO Problem Area Crime Enforcement (PACE) Unit was able to locate and arrest Baker and Smith for their involvement in the incident on

Feb. 5, 2020. Both have been booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. Baker is being held on a $50,000 bond and Smith is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Felon charged with fleeing traffic stop, driving against traffic on Palm Coast Parkway A 22-year-old felon briefly dragged a deputy behind his car while fleeing a traffic stop Feb. 6, crashing into another vehicle and then swerving onto Palm Coast Parkway going the wrong direction, against traffic.

The incident began at the Shell station at 890 Palm Coast Parkway Southwest, where Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Philip Conway was on foot patrol when he saw Elisha Payne-Clark, a 22-year-old he recognized from previous encounters, drive into the gas station parking lot in a black Kia, enter the smoke shop in the shopping plaza, then exit without buying anything, according to an FCSO arrest report.

When Payne-Clark spotted

the deputy, he went into the gas station, then immediately walked out and got into the Kia. The deputy found this concerning, noting in the arrest report that the area is “known for high narcotic traffic.”

The deputy walked over to the Kia, saw a baggy of marijuana sitting in the console cup holder, and ordered PayneClark to get out of the car.

Instead, Payne-Clark reached for the gear selector, and the deputy grabbed his sweater through the open window.

Payne-Clark threw the car into reverse and hit the gas — dragging Conway, who was still holding on — and struck a truck that was driving through the parking lot, then put the car in gear and careened forward, still dragging Conway, who let go as the Kia veered toward a parked car.

“I was in fear for my life at this point, as Elisha had just crashed into another vehicle and now was headed straight for another vehicle,” Conway wrote in the arrest report. “Elisha had no regard for my safety or the safety of anyone else around us.”

the eastbound lanes, swerving around the oncoming traffic.

Conway got the Kia’s tag number and called for assistance. Other deputies arrived, and the county’s emergency services helicopter, Fire Flight, deployed.

Two concerned citizens called emergency services: One spotted the Kia driving recklessly on Bridgehaven Drive, and another called and said he’d just seen a man in his twenties go running into a porta-potty yelling into his phone that he’d been in a crash and needed to be picked up.

The second caller also spotted a Dodge Dart pick up Payne-Clark and head toward Belle Terre Parkway. Deputies found it later on Old Kings Road South, near a home associated with the Kia’s registered owner — Payne-Clark’s girlfriend.

They found the Kia — the baggy of pot still sitting in its cupholder — at a home on Briarvue Lane.

Meanwhile, the Kia’s owner, Payne-Clark’s girlfriend, called in to report the car stolen.

When pressed by deputies, she recanted, admitting that she allowed Payne-Clark to use the car, and that Payne-Clark had

lagler Palm Coast’s girls basketball team is in one of the toughest districts in the state. Competing in the Class 7A-District 1 tournament, the No. 1-seeded Bulldogs were afforded a first round bye before they squared off with No. 5 seed Oakleaf in the semifinals on Feb. 4. The Bulldogs won that game handedly, pounding Oakleaf 49-32.

The Bulldogs faced much more adversity in the district championship game the night of Friday, Feb. 7.

The game was at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs’ opponent was No. 3 seed Sandalwood, another Jacksonville-area team. The crowd that packed into Mandarin’s gym heavily favored the Saints.

But that didn’t faze the Bulldogs.

“We have a lot of confidence,” FPC senior, team captain and leading scorer Brianna Ellis said.

“We have a lot of trust in each other and in our coaches.”

Sophomore forward Lauren Stewart did much of her damage in the first quarter, scoring 10 of her team-high 19 points in the period. She scored in a variety of ways: posting up, driving to the hoop, at the free throw line. But the pull-up jumper is her go-to move.

“It’s what I do best,” she said.

The Bulldogs held a 23-16 lead at halftime. That lead shrank to 36-31 after the third quarter, and the Saints trimmed it to as close as a single point late in the fourth period.

Still, the Saints kept in close.

Ellis was sent to the free throw line multiple times to close out the game. She hit 8 free throws and scored 15 points to keep the Bulldogs ahead.

FPC held on to beat Sandalwood 48-45 for the Bulldogs’ first district title since the 201718 season.

“We were really working hard, and we stayed together the entire time,” Ellis said. “We’re a family no matter what, no matter who tries to get in our face. Winning was so satisfying.”

The No. 4 seed Bulldogs will face No. 5 seed West Orange in the first round of the 7A-Region 1 tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at FPC High School.

Bulldogs head coach Javier Bevacqua said he wants his team to communicate and play hard.

“That’s all you can really ask for,” he said.

“Having Bri [Ellis] on this team, it just makes you feel relaxed as a coach. You have an extension of yourself on the court.”

Matanzas track/cross country’s Dalton Hawley signed his national letter of intent to run for Brevard College. Located in Brevard, North Carolina, the Tornados are an NCAA Division III program, and they are members of the USA South Athletic Conference.

Matanzas girls basketball’s season came to an end on Feb. 4 in the second round of the Class 5A District 4 tournament.

The No. 3 seed Pirates, who defeated No. 6 seed Deltona 72-34 in the first round of the tournament, lost to No. 2 Ponte Vedra 54-18. The Pirates, who did not win a game during the 2018-19 season, went 14-11 in head coach Eric Guerrero’s first season with the team.

In nearly 30 years of coaching Flagler Palm Coast’s girls soccer team, head coach Pete Hald has competed in high-stakes games many times.

“Sometimes I leave the game feeling good,” he said. “Sometimes, not so good.”

The Bulldogs’ 2019-20 season came to an end the night of Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Class 7A-Region 1 quarterfinals. The Bulldogs faced rival Spruce Creek, the No. 2 seed in the regional tournament, losing the Hawks 2-1 at Spruce Creek home field.

The Bulldogs struggled mightily in the first half, but only surrendered one goal.

FPC goal keeper Gabriela Calidonio, who was arguably the Bulldogs’ best player during the district tournament, continued with her stellar play, keeping the Bulldogs within striking distance.

The Bulldogs had several opportunities to score, mostly on throw-ins, but the Hawks were able to avoid danger — until midway through the second half. FPC forward Hailey Bovino scored off a throw-in from teammate Taylor Murphy to tie the game 1-1 with 18 minutes left in regulation.

The Matanzas High School senior sank a school-record eight 3-pointers in the Pirates’ 79-48 victory Feb. 7, at Flagler Palm Coast High School. The Pirates, who led by just six points at halftime, dominated the second half, scoring 51 points to FPC’s 26.

Kegley said he was left in the game late so that he could chase the record, and his teammates were on board with the plan.

“We just wanted him to break the record,” said Damon Warrell, who scored 14 points.

“Whenever you mention Matanzas basketball, we want you to think of Jeremy Kegley,” added Kevin Priccaciante, who hit two 3s of his own in the win.

It was a sweet victory for teammate David Evans, who said the Pirates got their “mojo” back just before the playoffs. “Plus,” he said, “we don’t want to be No. 2 in an area that has two schools. If we’re not first, we’re last.”

Jonathan Richard led FPC with 15 points. Desmond Neal added 14, including the Bulldogs’ only 3-pointer.

Flagler Palm Coast’s boys wrestling team won the Five Star Conference team title on Saturday, Feb. 8, at New Smyrna Beach High School.

The Bulldogs withstood Atlantic 186-175.5.

FPC senior Joseph Rizzo (113) won his second conference title, winning by decision. Freshman Kole Hannant (106 pounds) won his first conference title by pinning his opponent, and senior Andrew Dance (132) picked up a pinfall victory, as well. Blaine DeFord (152) scored his 41st victory of the year by major decision.

Sophomore Kyle Peacock (138) won by decision, too.

Matanzas girls soccer makes it to regionals Though the Pirates lost a plethora of talent from last season’s squad, the girls soccer team set a goal of making it to the district championship in 20. The Pirates accomplished that goal. Although they lost to Ponte Vedra 5-0, the Pirates still advanced to the regional quarterfinal, where they lost to Mosley 8-0.

The Pirates finished the season with a 14-6-1 record.

Imagine your new life Imagine School students recreate Ellis island experience.

The spirit of Emma Lazarus’s poem, which turned the Statue of Liberty into a symbol of America welcoming immigrants, hung over Imagine School at Town Center like the mist over New York Harbor on Feb. 7, when the entire third grade participated in a simulated Ellis Island experience.

It was the ninth-annual Ellis Island Day at Imagine, adapted from a program on the Scholastic website, and around 100 students were present for the tradition, most of them in costume as turnof-the-century immigrants.

It was appropriately cold and windy in the courtyard that stood in for the deck of a steamship.

After falling silent at the sight of the Statue of Liberty (a cardboard placard held up by a teacher), the immigrants filed inside,

steerage passengers waiting to go after those in first class, to four classrooms that served as different stops on the Ellis Island journey: an interview room, a medical examination room, a citizenship exam room and a train station.

Having spent the previous two weeks reading “The Orphan of Ellis Island” by Elvira Woodruff, all of the students were keyed in to historical details they were now eager to recreate.

“The kids really enjoyed the book,” said Heather Overton, third grade team leader. “I think reading the book before doing this makes them that much more excited.”

Those who misplaced their belongings — sacks of personal affects brought from home, a passport, money from their homelands, stuffed pets, doll babies — or made some other error on their journey were sent to the hallway for detainment, where they were interrogated by some of the parent volunteers who were assisting the teachers (many of them costumed like the kids) in running the island.

Unattended belongings were actively snatched by watchful teachers and volunteers.

“They have to be responsible!” said teacher Monique Levy. “You think in Ellis Island people were always nice enough to bring your stuff back?”

“This is not a smiling moment,” said one grave detainee, as someone took pictures of those lined up for interrogation.

event,” Overton said. “It’s just as much fun for the parents as it is for the kids.”

Once all the groups had cycled through the different rooms — gotten their medical clearance, passed their citizenship exams, bought their train tickets to take them to new lives in a strange land — a “Welcome to America” party saw snacks and juice boxes distributed throughout the classrooms.

“That’s a lasting memory for them,” Overton said. “They really studied for the citizenship test; they got the seriousness of that.”

When asked why their foreign alter egos wanted to leave their homes, the students all shared similar answers: “To get a better education.”

Meet Winda Almazan New president of the Philippine American Association of Palm Coast

When Winda and Tony Almazan moved to Palm Coast from the suburbs of Philadelphia in 2014, they did not expect what they found here.

“We were surprised there were so many Filipinos,” Tony Almazan said. More in the immediate area than in their last suburb, in fact.

The Almazans were quick to join the Philippine American Association of Palm Coast after the move, having been members of similar groups before; Winda Almazan had been very active in the Philippine Nurses Association PRELEASING FORand had founded a youth dance troupe for the purpose of MARCH 2020! teaching cultural dances from the Philippines.

The PAAPC was born in 1992, 12 years after Winda Almazan arrived in the U.S. in 1970 as a nurse via the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.

“It was hard to adjust, because here you’re totally on your own,” she said. “The family living” she was used to in the Philippines, with multiple generations living close to each other, wasn’t there.

But Winda Almazan ultimately stayed here because, she said, “there was more advancement in education. I began to like the independence.”

While there are more Filipinos nearby in Palm Coast than where they used to live, the PAAPC is different from previous groups the Almazans were part of.

“It’s an older group,” Winda Almazan said. But that’s a virtue: the members have experience with previous associations and can exchange ideas on how to run this one.

“In the end,” she said, “we have the same goal.” That goal?

To help their countrymen in the Philippines by setting up scholarships, raising funds for medical assistance and helping with disaster relief for volcanic eruptions and typhoons. The PAAPC has another medical mission planned in April, which will see its members going to a small mountain town to do things like dental work, circumcisions and health screenings for the poor residents.

This is when Winda and Tony Almazan have the opportunity to turn to their homeland outside of visits to extended family.

Winda Almazan will have the opportunity to take a more active role in planning these operations now that she has been elected as president of the PAAPC and installed at a song- and dancefilled ceremony with around 160 attendees Feb. 8.

“I was honored,” she said.

Group members look for leadership public speaking abilities in a potential president, she said, as well as a sense for public relations

and a professional career.

“I’ve always been a leader,” Winda Almazan said. “You always think about your members before anything else. The responsibility is tremendous.” Despite coming to Palm Coast for retirement, she has never been busier.

She has plans for the organization. She wants to educate Philippine American kids about their history, through programs like her dance classes and engagement with older Filipinos. Winda hopes to reach out to other associations like the Portuguese American Association and African American Cultural Society for mutual support and to exchange ideas.

“In traveling, we’ve found people are all the same,” she said. “We like to eat, we like to dance, we like to sing.”

And she wants to bring more of the local Philippine American population into the association as active members.

“That’s part of my platform,” Winda Almazan said, laughing, “get them out of their shells!”

SHERIFF PRESENTS FIRST ‘GREAT KIDS’ AWARDS FOR 2020 On Feb. 5, Sheriff Rick Staly visited three local schools to present three exceptional students with awards for being “Great Kids” throughout January.

These are the very first Great Kid awards of 2020.

“This is a wonderful tradition that we started in 2018, and it allows us to meet and recognize some extraordinary kids doing great things in our community and in their schools,” Staly said.

“We have some really great kids in Flagler County and it is an honor to give them an award for all they do.”

Bruce Higgins is a committed, dedicated student at Wadsworth Elementary, a safety patrolman who is a great role model to his peers, always willing to help others in need.

Nigel-Ginola Njok is a student at Imagine School at Town Center with outstanding grades and helps the younger students with all of their projects. Nigel is also a safety patrolman for the school and works as a teacher’s aid.
