T

he proposed development of the Matanzas Woods golf property met with resistance from residents when it was unveiled in a community meeting in December.

Now it’s also meeting some resistance from the city’s planning staff members, who’ve told developer Alex Ustilovsky that portions of the proposal are at odds with city regulations designed to protect the golf course views of existing residents and the character of existing neighborhoods.

City staff reviewed the Master Planned Development agreement application and sent comments back to the developer on Thursday, Feb. 20.

“We are reviewing the city’s comments,” Michael Chiumento III, the attorney representing Ustilovsky, wrote to the Palm Coast Observer. “Given the importance of this project to the community, we are meeting with various homeowners in the neighborhood to consider their issues.

“The owner, these homeowners and city staff are discussing ways to develop the property that minimizes the impact to the community. For example, we are looking at each home on the golf course and evaluating their existing view.

“Moreover, we are looking at ways that the owner can help the city address their pre-existing flooding issues in some areas of the community. We are excited

and believe the owner and various homeowners can create a win-win for the community and the city.”

Palm Coast Chief Development Officer Jason DeLorenzo said city code requires that development occurring on a golf course property not impede the rear views of properties — undeveloped land lots as well as existing homes — that have a golf course view.

That makes parts of the proposed development impermissible, DeLorenzo said.

One of those areas is a chunk of land west of Lake Success Drive, which the developer wanted to use for single-family homes. But the proposed homes would affect the views of existing homes and properties on Lake Success Drive.

“No development south of southern edge of existing pond in ‘F’ area,” states a city staffer’s handwritten note on a copy of the plans that was sent from the city back to the developer. “Area to remain natural buffer area, to protect golf course views.”

City staff had a similar comment for a large piece of land west of Lakeview Boulevard north of Lewis Shire Place, and for a smaller area behind Laramie Drive.

In other areas, city staff told the developer that proposed homes would be permissible, but only if additional natural buffers are added between the proposed new homes and the existing properties.

currently designated as greenbelt land, which can not be directly changed to residential use through a Master Planned Development application. Instead, the process will require an amendment to the city’s Future Land Use Map, which will require the approval of the City Council, Planning Board, and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. (The developer submitted a Future Land Use Map amendment request, but it was not complete, DeLorenzo said.)

City staff also told the developer that proposed town homes may not be smaller than 1,000 feet of living space (the city’s code requires at least 650 feet), that townhouse roofs must be pitched to match the style of existing homes in the area, and that a proposed multifamily development on a parcel west of London Drive must have 150-foot setbacks from existing singlefamily residential lots.

The city will also require that the land be tested for contaminants such as arsenic and organochloride pesticides.

The next step for the proposal will involve a response by the developer to the city’s comments, Deputy Chief Development Officer Ray Tyner said.

“When they resubmit something, we’ll ... apply the Land Development Code and the Comprehensive Plan to it and see if we believe it complies,” Tyner said.

If so, the proposal could then go before the city’s Planning Board, and then to the City Council for a vote.

Super search continues School Board chooses four superintendent applicants for interviews: Orndorff, Mittelstadt, Johnson and Womack.

our applicants for the school district’s superintendent position — two of them with an existing connection to Flagler County — have made the shortlist of candidates who will be invited for interviews with the Flagler County School Board.

The School Board chose the four during a meeting Feb. 25, selecting Vernon Orndorff, a former Flagler Schools assistant superintendent who is now a superintendent in Texas; Cathy Mittelstadt, a deputy superintendent in St. Johns County; Earl Johnson, the district’s executive director of leadership development; and Janet Womack, an educational consultant in Texas and former superintendent of a district in Alabama.

Orndorff and Mittelstadt were both selected by all four School Board members, while Johnson and Womack were selected by three.

CONKLIN CUT FROM CONSIDERATION

Colleen Conklin, the Flagler County School Board member and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University assistant professor who has temporarily stepped away from her board position in order to apply for the superintendent position, won the support of one board member — Maria Barbosa.

“Our colleague didn’t move forward, but I would just say that if she’s looking for the path as a superintendent, my weight was heavily on administration, having principalship, district administration. ... That was a deciding factor for me,” Board member Andy Dance said. “I give her credit for stepping out of her comfort zone and putting her name in; I just think the district needs somebody to step in who’s had that prior experience. ...

I think she’s a very good board member for us, and I want her to come back.”

Soon after the selection was made, Conklin posted on her public Facebook page, writing, “Very proud of the community and my colleagues on the School Board. This was a very unique and unknown process. The top four candidates that have been selected by the Board for final interviews are top quality candidates for consideration and will serve our district well. Orndorff, Johnson, Mittelstadt and Womack will move on for the final round of interviews. Thank you for all your well wishes. I have no regrets and I’m grateful for the experience. I have no doubt the best candidate will be selected to lead the district.”

JOHNSON DRAWS BOTH SUPPORT AND CRITICISM

All four of the applicants selected were also on a nine-person shortlist of candidates that was recommended by a citizen advisory committee. (A total of 35 people had initially applied, but three withdrew. Applicants’ application packets can be viewed at https://bit.ly/2HWKKAj.) The county’s ESE Parent Advisory Council, EPAC, put forward a different list of recommendations, but two of the selected candidates — Womack and Mittelsadt — were also on that list.

One of the two who had not been — Earl Johnson — sent a cease-and-desist letter through an attorney threatening legal action to EPAC and its chairman, Steve Furnari, over EPAC’s public comments about Johnson (view the letter at https:// bit.ly/2I3mTyR). The letter was copied to School Board members, Superintendent James Tager, School Board Attorney Kristy Gavin and to Bill Vogel, a consultant from the Florida School Board Association who has been advising the district on the search

APPLICANT INTERVIEW SCHEDULE After the School Board selected four finalists Feb. 25 to interview for the superintendent position, the Flagler County School District reached out to each of the four to notify them.

They are expected to arrive for interviews this coming week.

The schedule is as follows, according to a school district news release:  Thursday, March 5: Candidates will be interviewed by the full School Board between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Government Services

Furnari mentioned Johnson’s letter in his comments to School Board members during the public comment period of the Feb. 25 meeting.

“While that candidate may disagree with the statements made, the candidate had a choice,” Furnari said. “He could have reached out to this community advocacy group, requested an audience, and discussed with us why EPAC was wrong about our positions. He can still do that. Instead, the candidate chose to hire a lawyer and threaten to sue community members into silence. And I ask you: With a position as public as the superintendent position, a position subject to routine criticism from community members, do we want or need a candidate whose instinct is to hire a lawyer and to sue parents of children with disabilities into silence, or do we want someone who has the fortitude to reach out and have a conversation?”

EPAC’s stated concerns with Johnson centered on a perception that he had mishandled sexual harassment complaints against Belle Terre Elementary School Principal Dr. Terence Culver, who retired last year while under investigation. Johnson told the Palm Coast Observer that he had not been involved in the investi-

Furnari’s comments at the meeting followed several comments by community members who’d spoken in favor of Johnson, who was the only applicant to receive explicit statements of support from community members during the meeting.

Resident Ralph Lightfoot said there are benefits to hiring from within.

“Let’s not reinvent the wheel here; let’s hire someone who can hit the ground running,” he said.

“Don’t judge Dr. Johnson on something somebody else may have done; judge him on his ability to get the job done. I strongly support Dr. Johnson. ... We know Flagler County was the last county to desegregate; let’s not be the last county to elevate an African American to a significant position.”

Palm Coast resident Greg Davis also spoke of the benefits of promoting from within.

“My view is that you have qualified incumbent staff that are performing well, that you’ve prepared them for the next levels of responsibility, and there’s a team in place to move the organization to the next level,” Davis said.

“Culturally, when you can promote from within, that raises the tide for all boats in the organization and improves your processes.”

 Tuesday, March 10: At 1 p.m., the School Board will hold a special meeting to make its final selection of the next superintendent. The meeting will be held in Training Room 3 of the Government Services Building. The district will then begin contract negotiations.  Tuesday, March 17: The School Board is expected to approve a contract with the new superintendent during its regular March 17 meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. in the board chambers at the Government Services Building.

The new superintendent’s projected start date is Monday, June 1, according to the news release.

City Councilman Jack Howell voted for the moratorium when it came before the City Council in January, but said later he thought the council may have been getting ahead of itself.

Palm Coast’s Planning and Land Development Regulation Board was divided Feb. 19 when it approved the City Council’s request to institute a 120-day moratorium on dollar stores.

The vote was 4-3 in favor of the moratorium.

The City Council itself had voted 5-0 in favor of the moratorium on Jan. 14. City staff had proposed that the city use a moratorium to give city staff time to determine if additional regulations are needed for dollar stores to keep them from crowding out other grocery options.

Planning board member Sybil Dodson-Lucas said she was in favor of the moratorium and was concerned about the impact of dollar stores on the city.

“Where you have a proliferation of these kinds of stores, other kinds of commercial enterprises that people want will not come in, because they will say there is no market,” she said. “There are an awful lot of people in Palm Coast that are concerned about these stores popping up all over our neighborhoods.”

said he didn’t think a 120-day moratorium would cause any harm, since there are no dollar store proposals in the pipeline.

He added, “I don’t have a problem with that, but I think it’s a slippery slope.”

Some board members had concerns about the length of the time frame.

“I think staff is going to act as quickly as they possibly can on this,” said Katie Reischmann, one of the city’s attorneys. “I think they’re asking for 120 days just to be safe, so they don’t have to keep coming back.”

“My goal for the Mayor’s Challenge is to surpass the ninety mile mark and run 900 miles instead,” said Carl Cote, a Palm Coast resident who moved here 15 years ago from New Hampshire.

“I love running through the woodsy and peaceful areas from Waterfront Park through the Graham Swamp Trail, where I can reflect in a meditative state while I move to reach my target for the Challenge.” Carl also rides his bike and lifts weights.

Homeless man, 63, found dead in fire off Cypress Point Parkway RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

The 22-year-old man asked the older man what happened, and the man said he didn’t know, and pedaled away, according to the case report.

Deputies started a crime scene log and contacted the Medical Examiner’s Office, and the fire marshal and a medical examiner responded to the scene.

The medical examiner removed the 63-year-old man’s body.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 386-313-4911.

A 63-year-old homeless man was found dead in a brush fire near the Superwash Express on Cypress Point Parkway the night of Sunday, Feb. 23.

Firefighters were putting out the flames when they came across the man’s body.

As of midday on Feb. 25, deputies did not have a positive identification of the victim, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Public Affairs Manager Brittany Kershaw said.

“The body is with the medical examiner, so they’re determining if there was any foul play,” she said. Deputies had not noted any indication of trauma, but considered the fire suspicious.

Many homeless people had been living in the wooded lot where the fire occurred, and the location had also been the site of a fire about a week before, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at about 8:40 p.m. on Feb. 23. A firefighter noted to deputies that he’d seen an older man ride away from the area on a bicycle, according to an FCSO case report.

Beware the city’s ‘tricky’ deal with Coastal Cloud Future arrangements like the one that led to Palm Coast Connect should be scrutinized more carefully.

I am writing in follow-up to the Palm Coast Observer’s Dec. 19 story, “Palm Coast Connect: the city’s win-win deal.” I am one of at least three former city of Palm Coast employees you interviewed for the story, but you disregarded our input days before publication, explaining that your decision was “for the good of the community.”

In truth, the arrangement between the city and Coastal Cloud, a local company where Mayor Milissa Holland is employed, is not a win-win deal for the good of the community.

Certainly, having a citizen engagement portal/app is a great thing for residents and city operations. The previous Issue Tracking system we had was outdated, little used and did not do what the city needed it to do. So in recent

years, city employees including me received demos of several civic engagement apps including SeeClickFix and CitySourced. Another option would have been to buy a component offered by Munis, the city’s current software, for an issue management system.

Apps of this type typically have an up-front cost and an annual maintenance fee based on city population size; one proposal I recall was $15,000 for the initial, one-time fee plus $36,000/year for the annual fee.

The partnership with Coastal Cloud was announced as “free,” with Coastal Cloud offering its services at no charge in exchange for gaining experience in this line of app development and a product to show other potential customers (other governments).

The decision to use Coastal Cloud’s app, named Palm Coast Connect, was ultimately far more expensive from the financial standpoint and in the city employee hours required for its development, implementation and ongoing use.

For the current fiscal year, the city budgeted more than $100,000 for Salesforce software licensing required to run Palm Coast Connect. The city also had to add a new, full-time staff position to support the

system – a new IT employee with Salesforce experience.

Existing employees, mainly in IT, marketing and customer service, spent hundreds of hours assisting in the development of Coastal Cloud’s new product. Many of these were higher-paid, upper-level employees who had to divert their attention from other important city work.

Now launched, the Palm Coast Connect app costs three to four times more annually than if the city had purchased an off-the-shelf app already being used in hundreds of communities across the United States. Additionally, those products may have offered more functions the city was looking for and tied into Palm Coast’s existing software systems more easily. The Observer’s story about Palm Coast Connect indicated some functions such as field service lightning, through which city crews would be notified in the field as the calls for service come in, had not yet been implemented six months after last June’s launch.

The Salesforce software licensing required to operate Palm Coast Connect is an annual cost. That cost is based on the number of users, meaning it will cost more and more each year as additional citizens sign up. That is unlike other apps, which are priced based on population.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CITY AND COASTAL CLOUD

Cost notwithstanding, there are additional considerations that make arrangements such as this one between the city of Palm Coast and Coastal Cloud tricky.

Mayor Holland was very involved with city staff during the development of Palm Coast Connect — much more than what an elected official would be normally, and much more than Mayor Holland normally was for other city projects, in my experience. I was on the team to launch Palm Coast Connect, and I personally was involved in updating the mayor on the project’s progress and marketing decisions a number of times. Mayor Holland heavily edited the news release announcing Palm Coast Connect, and that news release was delayed until three days after launch because she was working with the city manager on the wording. Having an elected official rewrite a news release never happened to me any other time in my seven years with the city.

This can be an awkward situation for employees. How could city employees feel 100% comfortable expressing concerns or raising questions about the development or marketing of a product or service being received from the company where the mayor is employed? How could employ-

Dear Editor: In 1970, 16 years after Brown vs. Board of Education, Flagler County Schools became part of the last wave of Florida schools to desegregate schools and one of the last to integrate in the nation.

This is a sad and embarrassing part of this county’s history. Our county was a reluctant follower then, and I fear this reluctance continues, albeit there is no landmark Supreme Court decision to compel Board action. At least, not yet.

Over the weekend, I decided to conduct a little research into Florida school districts and determine which ones have language in at least one district policy that specifically addresses gender identity, transgender status, or gender expression.

I would like to share the results of this research with the citizens of Flagler County.

They couldn’t.

These are the reasons the arrangement between the city of Palm Coast and Coastal Cloud was such a bad idea. And why future business dealings of this type — whether with Coastal Cloud or any company affiliated with the community’s elected officials — should be avoided, or at least weighed very carefully. Such arrangements should be held to a higher standard of review and approval. It’s up to the Palm Coast City Council to fully understand the immediate and future budget implications before moving forward.

When an elected official is the owner of a local business seeking to do business with the city, or is an employee of such a business, City Council members should remember that it could put city employees in a difficult position.

Council members should ask themselves if it’s really worth it.

Nor’easter conditions damage new dune walkovers

In 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused devastating damage to SR A1A in Flagler Beach. The tropical cyclone either seriously damaged or destroyed multiple dune walkovers that provide residents and visitors with pedestrian access to the beach.

Beginning the morning of Friday, Feb. 21, and continuing overnight and into the following morning, Nor’easter type weather conditions damaged the following dune walkovers, which are closed until further notice: North 21st Street, North 22nd Street, Marina Bay (Near North 23rd Street).

City Manager Larry Newsom said the walkovers were installed by the Florida Department of Transportation, so he will inquire why they didn’t withstand the weather.

“Our commission and our community are beyond disappointed” he said. “We’ve waited over three years to get those walkovers replaced after Matthew and now they’re gone. We

Two in custody after threats to kill The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received a call Feb. 15 from a woman who told deputies that her ex-boyfriend was threatening via text message to shoot her. When the victim refused to respond, the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jerrad Moore arrived, driven there by Michelle Visciglia.

According to the victim, Moore jumped on the hood of the victim’s vehicle and pointed a shotgun at her.

Visciglia eventually grabbed Moore’s arm and got him to leave the scene.

A third-party witness confirmed the story, and deputies charged Moore with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and grand theft of a firearm, among other charges.

Visciglia was charged with tampering with a victim.

Deputies attempted to locate Moore and Visciglia but were unable to until Tuesday, Feb. 18, when deputies learned that both suspects were stay-

ing in the trailer of a friend on County Road 75 in Bunnell.

Deputies established a perimeter around the residence and made announcements for Moore and Visciglia to exit the property. An FCSO K-9 Unit and the Flagler County Emergency FireFlight helicopter assisted in securing the scene.

Visciglia quickly surrendered to deputies, but Moore refused to leave the residence. An FCSO crisis negotiation team was called out to speak with Moore, who eventually surrendered.

Visciglia is at jail on a $50,000 bond while Moore is being held with no bond.

Driving on a suspended license.

A deputy was patrolling Rolling Sands Drive and saw a truck pass by heading the other direction, towing a trailer with no tag. A man was driving, and a woman was sitting in the passenger seat.

Two young kids were in the back seat.

When the deputy did a U-turn, the truck sped up and turned onto a side street, according to the deputy’s report.

Then, “the male driver let go of the steering wheel, jumping into the passenger seat, leaving the driver seat unattended while the passenger jumped into the driver seat,” according to the deputy’s report.

When the deputy stopped the truck, the man insisted the woman had been driving. When the deputy challenged him, he admitted he’d been driving and had switched seats because he had no driver’s license — and already has a court date for next

month on a charge of driving on a suspended license.

The deputy arrested him.

Possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. A man was riding a bike on Mahogany when a deputy stopped him. It was night, and the man’s bike had no front light, and the rear red light was faint and partly obscured by a strap on the man’s backpack.

The deputy noticed a plastic baggie in the pocket of the man’s sweatshirt. The said it contained “hospital needles.” Another pouch was full of “cotton swabs.”

The man said he’d used meth in the past. The deputy asked him if he had any meth on him, and the man said no. He consented to being searched, and the deputy found ammunition — Remington .22 and Winchester .25 Cal rounds — in the man’s pocket.

The deputy ran a check on the man’s criminal history, and found he had several previous felony convictions — most recently, for possessing a firearm while a convicted felon. The deputy arrested him.

Railroad-themed Breakfast Station opens on Old Dixie

Erin Carpenter, of Flagler Beach, is co-owner of the Breakfast Station. Vince Karalunas, of Palm Coast, is general manager. He formerly worked for the Funky Pelican and several other restaurants.

This is the 15th in the Breakfast Station franchise, and it’s the second co-owned by Carpenter and her husband. When she first visited one of the restaurants, she was surprised to learn it had a railroad theme.

Her father, who drove trains for a living, had died not long before that, and she saw it as a sign. Her grandfather was a conductor, and her great-grandfather was a dispatcher, she said.

Carpenter has been thrilled with the support from customers.

“They want to see ... small business owners make it,” she said.

Karalunas said the Breakfast Station has stumbled upon a great cooperative spirit among the staff.

“We’re not fake with our customers,” he said. “I joke around with the old ladies. I have five girlfriends that are like 97 years old. … It’s fun to be here.”

This man just left at 2 p.m. after eating lunch — and he ate breakfast earlier this morning.

(Lunch was dumplings, which he requested — and which was added to the menu as a result.)

Another man with his son was leaving after having eaten at the restaurant four days in a row.

As co-owner Erin Carpenter and General Manager Vince Karalunas sat in a booth for an interview, they marveled at the joy and loyalty of the customers since the place opened in November, next to Publix at the Old Dixie Highway-Interstate 95 interchange.

“I’ve never been at a restaurant that has regulars like this,” said Karalunas, who has been immersed in the restaurant business since he was 12.

elly Flagler always wanted to own her own gym.

Flagler used to be a gymnast at the University of Florida, which is historically one of the top programs in the country. She graduated from UF in 2004. By 2006, she had opened up Palm Coast Gymnastics.

“It was always a dream of mine,” she said. “Palm Coast just seemed like the perfect place to do it.”

The original gym was a 4,000-square-foot facility on Enterprise Drive. But a few months into her new job, she and her staff realized they needed a bigger space. Nearly 1 1/2 years later, she opened up a new gym, a 9,000-square-foot facility, at 303 Old Moody Blvd. — near the Flagler County Airport — where it’s been ever since.

Gymnastics training is a year-

round endeavor. Nearly 300 students, ages 18 months to 17 years, pour into Flagler’s gym throughout the year.

Flagler considers herself somewhat of a mother figure to her students. She keeps in touch with many of them — even when they graduate from high school. Some of her former students have children training at the gym.

“I spend so much time with them,” she said. “We have a very special bond. It’s more of a family-type gym.”

The competitive team, which you have to tryout for, has about 40 kids of various skill levels.

They balance their gymnastics training, their strength training, their nutrition, their families and their school work.

The competitive season runs from late January to April. Palm Coast Gymnastics has competed in three events so far — the ESPN Wide World of Sports meet, the Daytona Beach Open and at the Presidential. Every one of Palm Coast’s teams placed in the top three at each meet, some of which had more than 1,000 kids competing.

One student, 9-year-old Josephine Imperati, scored a 10 on the bars at the Presidential.

She did a glide swing, pulled herself over the bar, did a back hip circle, then did a straddleon before she stuck the landing.

It was her first time receiving a perfect score.

“It just makes me feel so good,” said Imperati, who competes in the Xcel Silver division.

The goal for all of Palm Coast’s competitors, however, is to make it to Nationals at the end of the season.

And what will that take?

“Hard work and dedication,” Imperati said.

Fifteen-year-old Brianna Tucker, who competes in Level 9, added: “ I think we’re going to go really far. I really believe in our team.”

Flagler Palm Coast’s boys wrestling team hadn’t won a district title since 2015. That all changed Friday, Feb. 21, as the Bulldogs captured the 3A-District 2 championship at FPC High School. The Bulldogs advanced 13 wrestlers to next week’s Region 1 tournament at Fleming Island. Drew Dance, Kyle Peacock, Blane DeFord and Timothy King all took first place in their respective weight classes.

Matanzas took home the District 4-2A championship at Matanzas High School. Ethan Goodman, Shaun Culbreth, George Joanos, Sam Russo, Griffin Wilder, Noel Alicea, Quenteen Robinson and Robert Elder won their weight classes, and five other Pirates qualified for the regional tournament, held at Tallahassee Chiles.

FPC football’s Nick Redding, who played cornerback for the Bulldogs, announced that he is committed to playing college football at United States Military Academy at West Point, which is an NCAADivision I program.

A pair of former Matanzas football players will be playing at the NCAA Division II level next season.

Josef Powell and Branden Gilyard, who graduated from MHS last year, announced that they will be transferring to Kentucky Wesleyan College. Located in Owensboro, the Panthers compete as an independent team.

Q +A FIRST BAPTIST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY ATHLETICS DIRECTOR IAN HAM

I

an Ham is the athletics director at First Baptist Christian Academy — a position he’s served in for almost two years. Ham, who has been at the school for three years, is also the head coach of the Crusaders’ baseball team.

He recently spoke with the Palm Coast Observer about the growth of FBCA’s athletics department, the Crusaders’ recent success and and challenges, and what he hopes to achieve as the school’s AD. Here’s what he had to say.

Q: At this point in the school year, how would you assess how FBCA teams performed during the fall and winter seasons?

A: It was a growing year for our football team. We had several seniors graduate and had some transfers. We had a bunch of eighth graders running around.

It was a lumps-taking year. They pulled out one game, but they had to gut it out. But fall sports went well. One individual in particular: Peter Hopfe from cross country.

He separated himself as a freshman last year, but this year as a sophomore, he was always competing in the top of the pack in all his races. He really stood out.

As for winter, it just ended for us with wrestling and boys and girls basketball. Our wrestlers didn’t do quite as well as last year. Our girls basketball team won more games this year than they have the previous two years combined.

Q: You hired Damon Stephenson, who was a member of four-consecutive Big South Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances at Winthrop from 1998 to 2002 and most recently coached professionally in New Zealand, as the boys basketball coach. What’s it like having someone with that kind of background and experience to lead a team?

A: He’s from St. Augustine originally. He wanted to be back in the area for his kid, and he walked in our doors one day this past summer. We were down a basketball coach, and I had no idea who was going to coach. He walked in for a tour of the school for his sixthgrade son. He said he’d help out any way he could, and he sent me his resume. It’s to the point now where we’re getting a lot of buzz from international kids who are

trying to come here to play basketball. He’s brought a big buzz with basketball.

Q: What’s it like for a small school like FBCA to draw interest from international student-athletes?

A: It’s cool. One of our big missions is to leverage sports for Christ. I played college baseball, a lot of our coaches played at a high level. I know from personal experience: Having the opportunity to use sports to influence kids is really the reason why we’re doing this.

Q: Are there any new projects you’re working on?

A: Boys basketball is really the one that we’re toying with. For bringing in international kids, it’s really difficult to keep it within the parameters of the Florida High School Athletics Association.

Obviously, we’re not going to do anything that gets us into trouble or make it unfair for us to compete. We’re toying with the idea of where we’ll have a local team still and be able to service those international kids. We’re trying to see how to do it the right way.

CROSSTOWN SHOWDOWN Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas’ boys and girls tennis teams met for their annual rivalry clash the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 24, at the Palm Coast Tennis Center.

Both FPC’s boys and girls team defeated the Pirates 7-0, with the Lady Bulldogs not giving up a point.

It was the Bulldogs’

fifth-straight year winning the County Cup. “Beating your crosstown rival is always a good thing,” Bulldogs girls coach Javier Bevacqua said. “We love to have it because sooner or later, it’s going to go back to the other side.

Bevacqua added: “We’re young, but we’re very talented.”

Flagler Palm Coast’s girls tennis team has four freshmen in its starting lineup.

“They’re freshmen,” the Bulldogs’ second-year head coach Javier Bevacqua said, “but they’re very good freshmen.”

Sandwiched near the middle of the Bulldogs’ five-woman lineup is No. 4-spot player Nina Walls, the Bulldogs’ lone senior.

Walls, 18, has been playing tennis for the past six years and has been on the varsity team since she was a freshman. She’s always been in the position of looking up to her teammates. Now, she’s the one leading them.

It’s new territory for her.

“I’ve had so much fun with the girls and even the guys team. It’s been an incredible experience, and I’m really glad I did it all four years,” Walls said. “Taking that role as the role model is new for me, but I really like it. It reminds of when I was a freshman — how I did, how I acted. I think that the girls, even though they’re younger, still have so much tennis knowledge.”

Because of the age difference, she views herself as the team mom.

She draws inspiration from past FPC players, like twins Victoria and Veronika Goncharova, who graduated two years ago. They gave her advice and showed her what it took to play tennis at the high school level.

“They were great leaders and great teammates,” Walls said.

“It’s how I want to be as the senior leader of this team.”

In Bevacqua’s first season with the team last year, he quickly picked up on Walls’ leadership qualities.

“Having her this year with all the freshmen, it’s a pleasure,” he said. “She’s also an IB student, so she knows what it’s all about. She’s so well-rounded and respected. When she speaks, they listen. She gives them good advice, not only in tennis, so she steers them in the right direction.

It’s invaluable to have someone like her on the team.”

The Bulldogs have their eyes on winning a conference and district title.

It’d be a hard feat to achieve without Walls’ experience.

“She’s our heart and soul right now,” Bevacqua said. “Without her, we’d be a little bit lost. We’d be having the freshmen blues without her.”

Walls will always be grateful for her high school experience, and even though she’ll be in college next year, she’s excited for what the future holds for FPC tennis.

“Overall, it’s been a great four years, and I’ve gotten so close to this team,” she said. “It’s a really great dynamic, and it’s so tightknit. I’m going to miss it when I go to college.”

Doug and Jessica Gibson started Iron Revolution Sports Performance, a private sports performance facility, nearly five years ago. They were in Port Orange for a year before moving the facility to 2405 E. Moody Blvd. in Bunnell, where they’ve been for the past four years.

Most would think they get to exercise all the time.

But balancing their marriage, taking care of their two small children and working up to 15 hours per day proves otherwise.

“Time-wise, fitness has to fit into your life. It can’t be the other way around,” Jessica said.

In other words: You have to make time for it.

“Control the things you can control. All the other things are out of our hands,” Doug said.

“We can control our food, we can control our training and we can control what we do outside of the gym. Even if you only get 20 minutes to train, do something intense. Don’t let only having 20 minutes be the reason why you don’t work out.”

They have a range of clientele, from kids who just started playing sports to senior citizens, including a 64-year-old woman who is preparing to set a deadlift world record.

When they get new clients, the Gibsons sit down with them and help them narrow down their goals.

“We get down to brass tacks,” Doug said.

They take body measurements: body circumference, body fat and basic weigh-ins. They keep track of what your body is doing weekto-week to hold you accountable.

“At the end of the day,” Doug said, “numbers don’t lie.”

The Gibsons have trained hundreds of people. They have found that many come in with a huge goal that is unrealistic to achieve.

They try to do too much, too soon.

The key is to set small-term goals.

“I usually tell clients to start about by picking one thing,” Jessica said. “Let’s say this week you wanted to not have soda or not have caffeine. Pick one thing that you can do every day. Once you make it a full week, add another goal on. Small-term goals eventually lead to bigger goals.”

The next step is to be prepared.

Plan out how you’re going to reach your goal: your exercise routines, your meals.

“Being prepared sets you up better,” Jessica said. “When you’re not prepared, you can make bad choices.”

The Gibsons don’t like the phrase “I can’t.” When you set a goal, you don’t want to restrict yourself too much. They prefer to say “I choose.”

Instead of saying “I can’t eat this” or “I can’t do that,” say “I choose to eat this” or “I choose to do that.”

“When you restrict yourself too much, that’s usually when you fail,” Jessica said. “Saying ‘I choose’ is empowering.”

Safe travels Volusia-Flagler doctors weigh in on how to stay safe and healthy while traveling this year JARLEENE ALMENAS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

This year, I’m going to travel more.

Sound familiar? If this was your New Year’s resolution, and you’re planning to follow through, chances are you’re starting to plan your upcoming trip. But with the recent concerns over the coronavirus, as well as general healthrelated questions that arise when abroad or on the road, can you travel safely?

Dr. Viviane Bishay, family medicine physician at AdventHealth Palm Coast, shared a few tips on how to stay healthy while traveling. And while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people avoid all nonessential travel to China, the rest of the world is your oyster.

“There no [travel] restrictions so far, so we don’t have to be alarmed or stop traveling until we have other recommendations,” Bishay said.

BACK TO BASICS

Regardless if you’re taking your first long-haul trip across the Atlantic, catching a cruise to the Caribbean or planning a road trip across the U.S., hand hygiene is essential. Bishay recommends always washing your hands before eating, after touching common

areas and before touching your face.

Travelers can keep a small hand sanitizer on their person to aid with this, Bishay said. As long as it’s under 3.4 ounces, you’ll be able to take it on planes as well.

Personal space plays a factor too.

“If you see anybody that looks sick, you can stay away from them,” Bishay said.

For better circulation, she always recommends patients get up from their seats during a flight. Passengers should also stay hydrated and try not to sleep through the whole flight. If you have compression stockings, you may want to wear them.

If pregnant, travelers should check in with their primary care physicians before flying. Doctors typically recommend women in their third trimester abstain from air travel.

IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH

Bishay also recommends travelers get up to date with their routine vaccinations, such as the flu, measles, mumps and chickenpox.

“It’s unlikely to catch those here, but as you travel to other countries, you don’t think about those, but it’s very likely to catch those,” Bishay said.

Those planning a cruise should also have a plan in case they get seasick, she said. When on a cruise, it’s also important you don’t overeat or drink too much alcohol, as that could play a factor in seasickness too.

country they plan to visit, so a visit to their primary care physician is in order, Bishay said. Travelers could also need prescriptions for preventive medication for diseases like malaria.

If you rely on a specific medication for everyday health, you should also plan to see your doc-

tor and get a refill early. Bishay recommends bringing enough medication for your trip, and then some, in case you are delayed.

It’s also not a bad idea to bring your own over-the-counter medicines, Bishay said, especially when traveling to a country who speaks another language.

When taking a road trip with young children who need car seats, parents should make sure the ones in use are appropriate for the age and size of the child, said Dr. Katarzyna Madejczyk, a physician at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.

Over the years, the recommendations have changed.

“There are no hardcore age and weight limits anymore,” Madejczyk said. “The recommendations are to keep children in rear-facing car seats as long as possible, until they outgrow basically the height and weight limit of the car seat, as prescribed by the manufacturer.”

She explained that studies show children who are rear-facing in the backseat of a vehicle are less likely to suffer an injury in a crash. A car seat should be replaced if involved in a crash, even if it looks okay; it could have hidden structural damage.

Children should stop using a car seat only when a seatbelt fits properly, Madejczyk said. That’s usually when they’re about 4 feet, 9 inches tall or 8-12 years old. The lap belt should sit across the hips and pelvis, the shoulder strap across the

middle of the shoulder and the chest. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children under 13 ride in the backseat of a vehicle.

Consider entertainment during trips, such as videos on a mounted iPad or tablet; toys that keep them occupied and comfortable are also good.

“But the other thing is taking breaks, because kids do get really tired and sometimes taking a break during the trip — stopping at a rest area and letting them stretch out — will I think make them happier, and make the parents happier and the trip not as long,” Madejczyk said.

Sound familiar? If this was your New Year’s resolution, and you’re planning to follow through, chances are you’re starting to plan your upcoming trip. But with the recent concerns over the coronavirus, as well as general healthrelated questions that arise when abroad or on the road, can you travel safely?

Dr. Viviane Bishay, family medicine physician at AdventHealth Palm Coast, shared a few tips on how to stay healthy while traveling. And while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people avoid all nonessential travel to China, the rest of the world is your oyster.

“There no [travel] restrictions so far, so we don’t have to be alarmed or stop traveling until we have other recommendations,” Bishay said.

BACK TO BASICS

Regardless if you’re taking your first long-haul trip across the Atlantic, catching a cruise to the Caribbean or planning a road trip across the U.S., hand hygiene is essential. Bishay recommends always washing your hands before eating, after touching common

areas and before touching your face.

Travelers can keep a small hand sanitizer on their person to aid with this, Bishay said. As long as it’s under 3.4 ounces, you’ll be able to take it on planes as well.

Personal space plays a factor too.

“If you see anybody that looks sick, you can stay away from them,” Bishay said.

For better circulation, she always recommends patients get up from their seats during a flight. Passengers should also stay hydrated and try not to sleep through the whole flight. If you have compression stockings, you may want to wear them.

If pregnant, travelers should check in with their primary care physicians before flying. Doctors typically recommend women in their third trimester abstain from air travel.

IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH

Bishay also recommends travelers get up to date with their routine vaccinations, such as the flu, measles, mumps and chickenpox.

“It’s unlikely to catch those here, but as you travel to other countries, you don’t think about those, but it’s very likely to catch those,” Bishay said.

Those planning a cruise should also have a plan in case they get seasick, she said. When on a cruise, it’s also important you don’t overeat or drink too much alcohol, as that could play a factor in seasickness too.

country they plan to visit, so a visit to their primary care physician is in order, Bishay said. Travelers could also need prescriptions for preventive medication for diseases like malaria.

If you rely on a specific medication for everyday health, you should also plan to see your doc-

tor and get a refill early. Bishay recommends bringing enough medication for your trip, and then some, in case you are delayed.

It’s also not a bad idea to bring your own over-the-counter medicines, Bishay said, especially when traveling to a country who speaks another language.

When taking a road trip with young children who need car seats, parents should make sure the ones in use are appropriate for the age and size of the child, said Dr. Katarzyna Madejczyk, a physician at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.

Over the years, the recommendations have changed.

“There are no hardcore age and weight limits anymore,” Madejczyk said. “The recommendations are to keep children in rear-facing car seats as long as possible, until they outgrow basically the height and weight limit of the car seat, as prescribed by the manufacturer.”

She explained that studies show children who are rear-facing in the backseat of a vehicle are less likely to suffer an injury in a crash. A car seat should be replaced if involved in a crash, even if it looks okay; it could have hidden structural damage.

Children should stop using a car seat only when a seatbelt fits properly, Madejczyk said. That’s usually when they’re about 4 feet, 9 inches tall or 8-12 years old. The lap belt should sit across the hips and pelvis, the shoulder strap across the

middle of the shoulder and the chest. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children under 13 ride in the backseat of a vehicle.

Consider entertainment during trips, such as videos on a mounted iPad or tablet; toys that keep them occupied and comfortable are also good.

“But the other thing is taking breaks, because kids do get really tired and sometimes taking a break during the trip — stopping at a rest area and letting them stretch out — will I think make them happier, and make the parents happier and the trip not as long,” Madejczyk said.

Ready for a nice spring day on the water? Here are five premier paddling trails in Volusia-Flagler.

Check park websites for fees and gate opening/ closing hours as you plan your trip, as these vary.

BULOW CREEK STATE CANOE TRAIL Length: 6.5 miles, from north of Bulow Plantation Ruins to the Halifax River The trip: There are three access points on the Bulow: You can start at Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park and head 3 miles north for a wild and scenic portion of the river, where it becomes shaded with trees, or head south into brackish marsh country as you approach the Intracoastal Waterway. You can also start at the other end, on the Intracoastal High Bridge Road, or start at an intermediate point, from the kayak launch at the end of Walter Boardman Lane. The marshy area between Walter Boardman Bridge and the High Bridge Road takeout can be tricky to navigate, so bring GPS and a chart and compass. The river below Bulow Plantation Ruins is unshaded.

HAW CREEK Length: 5.75 miles, from Russell Landing to Bull Creek Fish Camp The trip: This shady blackwater creek can be accessed from either end: The Russell Landing boat launch in Bunnell, at the end of County Road 2007; or from the Bull Creek Fish Camp launch on Dead Lake at the end of County Road 2006. Starting at Russell Landing, the creek is narrow and winding, passing through cypress swamps before it opens out onto the broad Crescent Lake (Crescent Lake can get dangerously choppy: Check forecasts before you go).

Turn north to head into Dead Lake and the toward the Bull Creek Fish Camp launch at its northern end. Stands of water lettuce and dollar weed may slow your progress in the Russell Landing area. The area is known for great panfish fishing and abundant wildlife.

PELLICER CREEK Length: 3.5 from FaverDykes State Park to Princess Place Preserve.

The trip: Pellicer Creek is known as one of the most pristine estuarine environments in the state. The paddling trail can be accessed from the west through FaverDykes State Park, or from the east through Princess Place Preserve. (The flats at the eastern end of the Pellicer side can be uncomfortably shallow for paddle boards.) This is generally a lazy paddle through broad, unshaded salt marsh, but a windy day can make paddling tricky on the flats.

Watch out for oyster bars at low tide.

NORTH COUNTY BLUEWAY/ HALIFAX RIVER BLUEWAY

Length: Varies Type of scenery: Estuarine Intracoastal/Halifax River The trip: The North County Blueway and Halifax River Blueway are linked paddling trails along the Halifax River/ Intracoastal Waterway in Volusia County. Launching at the northern end at on the North County Blueway in Tomoka State Park, paddlers can head 5 miles north into Flagler County, or head south toward the Halifax River Blueway. The Halifax River Blueway is 17 miles and has multiple put-in/take-out points: Tomoka State Park, Riverfront Park, and Wilbur Boat House.

TOMOKA RIVER STATE CANOE TRAIL Length: 13 miles, from State Road 40 to the Halifax River The trip: There are two launch points: Tomoka State Park, on the Halifax River; and Riverbend Park/Tomoka Estates, near U.S. 1. The portion of the trail near the Halifax River runs wide through coastal marshes, and the trail narrows into shaded woodlands to the south. The area is also popular with motorboaters. For a side trip, try Strickland Creek, which branches away from the Tomoka River about a mile south of Tomoka State Park.

Isaiah Wiggins doesn’t usually have much of a birthday celebration.

He’s allergic to just about every kind of food, and he can’t talk very well because of his autism. But for his 13th birthday, his mother, Laura Robinson, asked the Flagler Beach Police Department for a ride along, and they delivered even more than she expected.

Just about the entire department showed up at his bus stop after school on Feb. 19, in front of Beach Village Apartments, to give him gifts in addition to the ride along.

When he got off the bus, his mother reported that Isaiah said, “I’m so excited! I got to hold back the tears, though.”

The connection with FBPD was even more meaningful because Isaiah’s father, who was a state trooper in Maryland, died when Isaiah was 4. “He loves policemen,” Robinson said.

The idea for an event began

Robinson, who has recently finished breast cancer treatments and is cancer-free, said her faith allows her to keep a positive attitude about life.

“Every child is a gift,” she said, “and however that gift comes to you, that’s what you receive, and you make the best of it. Nothing is impossible with God.”

“My daughter was a Bobcat,” said Sonia Pagan-Lopez, “but I never had the opportunity to be a mentor, because I had to work.

But after today, I’m signing up to be a mentor.”

Pagan-Lopez was one of dozens of adults who volunteered to read stories to children as part of the African American Read-In on Feb. 20, at Belle Terre Elementary School.

“Education is the foundation,” she said.

The program was established nationwide in 1990 and began at

Shay Lassiter was a reader for the second year in a row. A Bethune-Cookman University graduate, Lassiter has studied inclusion and diversity in classrooms.

“Kids of color need to see people that represent them,” she said. “It’s been awesome.”

Anessa Harrison, a Matanzas High School student and part of the Future Educators of America program, was also a reader.

“I think having an African American Read-In shows children that there are people in their community that Anessa Harrison are good and we can learn from them,” she said. “It shows them new role models.”

But they’re a warm and welcoming bunch backstage, and witty and wise as well (sorry — prolonged exposure to Shakespeare makes one apt to indulge in alliteration, metonymy and rude puns). There are no outsiders here, even if you’re playing one.

No wonder I, someone preoccupied with facts and the rhythms of everyday language, can find such a sanctuary in the realms of poetry and high drama. It’s great to watch, but even better to bring to life.

ing the telltale lines of blue tape indicating where the set would drop off in foot-tall tiers, was out the window. We were in Flatland.

But if a bare, flat stage was good enough for Shakespeare, it’s good enough for us. One platform, that’s it.

John Sbordone has challenged us to engage the audience’s imagination with our staging as much as our author did with words — leaning on the power of allusion as much as illustration — and we have accepted the challenge.

Much as I’ll miss the staging we had planned, I won’t miss the steps: Onstage without my glasses (the glare from the lights would conceal my eyes from the audience, I’ve been repeatedly told), I would have been prime to join the tragedy’s ample body count.

I already do, technically: one of my two characters is the doomed Paris, the nobleman engaged to Juliet. The other is Prince Escalus of Verona, whose witness of the former character’s dead body led to some inventive cutting of lines in the final scene.

Finding the differences between these two men — one a carefree young gentleman smitten with his bride-to-be, the other a stern, authoritative monarch struggling to mediate an intractable blood feud — has been the greater part of my effort.

I’m less seasoned than some of the youngest cast members, high schoolers with more onstage acting credits to their names than my two, so naturally I feel like a dilettante here. Among such veterans as Earl Levine, Anne Kraft, Walker Fischer and Victoria Page and such fierce,

UNIVERSITY WOMEN OF FLAGLER HOLDS ANNUAL DAY OF GAMES Over 140 women gathered at the Palm Coast Community Center on Feb. 21 for the annual Day of Games held by the University Women of Flagler as one of its fundraisers. Mahjongg, Scrabble, bridge and dominoes were among some of the games enjoyed by the participants.

Local merchants were very generous in providing gift certificates and baskets for the raffle that took place after the lasagna lunch.

UWF, established in 2006, provides scholarships to Flagler County female seniors graduating from an accredited high school. As of this time, more than 80 scholarships totaling over $117,000 have been awarded. For more information, visit uwflagler.org.

Mark and Kathleen Webster, of Palm Coast, sold 14 Eastlake Drive to Maureen Bayly, of Schaghticoke, New York, for $445,000. Built in 2002, the house has four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a swimming pool and 2,684 square feet. It sold in 2006 for $525,000.
