BRIEFS Flagler parents can now follow their child’s bus online Flagler Schools has a new online tool for parents who want to keep track of their child’s bus. The district has partnered with CalAmp subsidiary, Synovia Solutions to bring “Here Comes The Bus” to Flagler County.

Flagler Schools Transportation Directors Andy West looked at various applications before deciding on “Here Comes The Bus.” What drew him to this program? “You can track your child’s location when they’re on the bus, you’ll get alerts when the bus is approaching the bus stop, you can look at the location of the bus before it even gets to the bus stop,” West said. “You can even get push notifications on your phone letting you know if the bus is running late.”

Instructions on how to download the app and set it up can be found at this link. There is no charge for parents to download and use the app, which is available in Apple’s App Store and Google Play. If you need information, such as a student ID, contact the student’s school or sign into Skyward and find the ID there.

CAR THIEF FAILS TO STAY IN HIS LANE 11:55 p.m. Interstate 95 near Palm Coast Parkway.

Auto theft. A deputy driving south on I-95 noticed that a large Ford truck pulling a trailer with a skid steer attached was straddling the right and middle lane divider. The truck crossed the center line several times. The deputy turned on his lights and sirens, but the truck kept driving for another 5 miles before pulling over.

When it did, the deputy found that the truck, its tag and the skid steer had all been reported stolen. The deputy arrested the driver.

LOOKING FOR HIS LUCKY NUMBER 9:31 p.m. 2200 block of South Old Dixie Highway.

Larceny. A man walked up to a store counter to buy something, but then walked around the store while the clerk was serving another customer, reached around the counter and grabbed a roll of $1 lottery scratch-off tickets. The tickets were numbered, and he stole 135 of them, then left.

A store employee noticed the theft on surveillance camera footage and contacted the Sheriff’s Office, which contacted the Florida Lottery Commission.

Criminal mischief. A man was sitting in a car at a parking lot when he noticed an older man dig a key into the paint of the car next to him.

The witness confronted the car-keyer, who said he’d keyed the car because he was angry about the way its driver had parked it.

The witness took a photo of the man and his vehicle as the man drove away. A deputy arrived and took a look at the car. The angry man had keyed the letters “F U” into the paint, causing what the deputy estimated as $1,000 worth of damage.

A deputy identified the car-keyer as a 68-year-old Palm Coast resident, and arrested him.

BAD RECEPTION 6:01 p.m. 4800 block of Belle Terre Parkway.

Larceny. A delivery service delivered a box to a cell service store. It was supposed to contain cell phones, but when employees opened it up, all of the phone boxes inside had been unwrapped, and the phones removed.

Store staff told deputies that the person who dropped off the box had been riding in the passenger seat of a delivery service truck, but wasn’t wearing a uniform, and had placed the box on a cabinet where it was not noticeable.

Flagler County has the lowest per capita COVID-19 case rate out of the state’s 67 counties, while the rate of Flagler County residents 65 and older who have been vaccinated for COVID-19 has risen to 69%, Florida Department of Health-Flagler experts said on Flagler Broadcasting’s “Free For All Friday” radio program March 19.

Flagler County has 33,193 vaccinated residents and is ranked seventh among the state’s 67 counties for the percentage of residents vaccinated.

“I just don’t believe that this happens by accident,” Florida Department of Health-Flagler Health Officer Bob Snyder said.

“We want to thank our Flagler County residents, our community partners. Together, we have it going on — and we’re doing the right things with regard to public health measures and just being careful.”

The county has seen a slight rise in case rates in the last several days, but just 11 people were hospitalized as of March 18, compared to numbers in the 20s and

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on March 19 the state is lowering the age threshold for COVID-19 vaccination from 60 to 50, effective March 22.

The son of Bertha (Bee) Hicks Wainwright and Edwin M. Wainwright, Richard was born in Newton, MA. An avid sportsman at Needham High School and Tilton Academy, he completed two years at Drew University before joining the Army.

While stationed in Italy, Richard spent time working with priests and orphans which was a life-changing experience. He returned home to finish college at Boston University. He lived by three mottos: help the other fellow, press on regardless, do random acts of kindness. His work as a teacher, coach, headmaster, entrepreneur, and an award-winning author supported these beliefs. Richard survived his loving first wife, D’Ann (O’Brien) Wainwright. He is survived by his wonderful second wife, Judith Wainwright (Smith) and her family: Coleby and Ed Mancini (son Matthew); Doug and Peggy Mantz (daughters: Sarah, Kelley, and Maggie); his eight Ecuadorian godchildren: Maria Herrera and Joe Mussato (children Benjamin and Rebecca); Freddy and Mariana Chávez (children Michael and Richard); Pablo and Maggie Herrera (children Jacob and Pablito); Cesar Herrera (children Dylan and Nina). The Health Department in Flagler County has seen a doubling of its weekly allotment of vaccines, from an initial 800 per week to 1,600 per week now, and expects that number to rise.

The Health Department has started holding vaccination events at local faith communities, said Florida Department of Health-Flagler Communications Manager Gretchen Smith, and will also hold a community vaccination event for people with diabetes on April 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. People who are interested in attending should call 386-3137263 to register.

So far, Snyder said, Flagler County has only seen two cases involving the UK COVID-19 variant, while Volusia has had five.

Shannon Acevedo, representing Matthews Design Group at the board meeting, said the development will have a main entrance and a secondary entrance.

It will not have an age limit, and will be designed as workforce housing. It will likely have a dog park or a tot lot, she said, and plenty of vegetated areas.

“We were going for a very compact, efficient design so that we could maximize on that green space around it,” Acevedo said.

The city’s planning staff found that the proposed development meets the requirements of the city’s comprehensive plan, and advised the Planning Board to recommend that the City Council approve it.

The Planning Board voted 7-0 to do so.

ocals who don’t want to deal with the upkeep or expense associated with owning a home will soon have new housing options: A 300-unit apartment complex planned for Pine Lakes Parkway received initial approval from the Palm Coast Planning and Land Development Review Board on March 17.

The apartment complex, called “Pointe Grand,” would be built on a 157.67-acre parcel on the northwestern side of Pine Lakes Parkway about halfway between Palm Coast Parkway and Belle Terre Parkway, Senior Planner Bill Hoover told Planning Board members at the March 17 meeting.

The nine apartment buildings would be clustered on 34.65 acres of the site, with a clubhouse and pool, and there would be about 500 feet of space between the apartment buildings and the nearest existing homes.

“That will provide a very good buffer,” Hoover said.

The three-story apartment buildings would have a maximum height of 42 feet and 9 inches, and units would all be two-bedroom, available in two sizes: 1,107 square feet or 1,153 square feet.

The complex’s 620 parking spaces would include 100 garage spaces and 12 ADA spaces.

When the developer contacted all of the neighbors living within 300 feet and invited them to present comments at a March 9 public meeting about the development, only about 30 homes fell into the

APARTMENT DEVELOPER WILL PAY TO OFFSET IMPACT ON SCHOOLS The planned 300-unit Pointe Grand apartment complex off Pine Lakes Parkway will bring the school district 24 more elementary schoolers and 14 more high schoolers than the district’s schools have space for, so the developer will pay the district to offset that impact.

The owner, Hillpointe LLC, will pay the Flagler County school district $2,626.27 per unit for a total of $787,882, school district Coordinator of Planning and Intergovernmental Relations Patricia Bott said during a March 23 School Board workshop.

The district recently revamped its mitigation policies so that they’re consistent, she said.

“Everything will be standardized from here forward for all mitigations,” she said.

The developer will pay $236,365 within 60 days of final plat approval, according to the agreement with the school district, then two disbursements of $196,970 each in 2022 and a single payment of $157,577 in June 2023.

School Board member Colleen Conklin asked if the money could be used to build a future school.

It could, Bott replied, as long as the school is in the concurrency service area for the development, or in an adjacent one.

The Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club’s future will look different from its past, and the School Board will have to make decisions in the coming months about what to do with the costly districtowned facility, Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt said in a March 23 School Board workshop.

Options include working with a potential private investor who Mittelstadt will meet with later this week or partnering with local governmental bodies that could help support the facility.

The school district has owned the Belle Terre Swim and Racquet Club ever since it accepted it as a gift from ITT decades ago. But providing a community gym and pool isn’t part of the district’s K-12 educational mission, and district staff have warned that the facility’s maintenance and repair needs could be costly as it ages, potentially pulling money away from K-12 uses.

COVID-19 also led to revenue decreases at the facility last year.

“COVID has caused all of us, in whatever organization you serve in, to pay attention to your budget and look where you stand,” Mittelstadt said at the workshop.

“The last several months, we’ve been trying to bring forward as much information as we can, recognizing that it is an aging facility and we will need to make some decisions moving forward — and when we make those decisions, those decisions, fundingwise, take out of opportunities at our school-based sites because of the way that we’re funded from Tallahassee.”

The district, she said, is not obligated by its mission to provide the programs that are available at the Swim and Racquet Club.

“It is unique. It is a beautiful thing,” Mittelstadt said. “We’ve heard from so many people from our public on how they access that and utilize that facility. But at the same token, Board, I will tell you moving forward — the financial concerns we are sharing with you — there will be some decisions to be made over the course of the next month or two as we share some opportunities.

“At the end of the day, we’re going to look different on how we provide that service, that is not our mission,” Mittelstadt said.

“So that’s a very delicate balance that we’re trying to walk, to get forward to a good healthy place financially, but also be able to be a good partner to community members.”

Flagler Schools’ grade level arrangement extends elementary school through sixth grade, and has only the seventh and eighth grades in middle school.

But capacity pressures may prompt the district to shift to a K-5 elementary school and 6-8 middle school grade arrangement, although the change wouldn’t take effect until the 2022-2023 school year.

The district’s elementary schools and high schools are over capacity, while middle schools have limited space, school district Coordinator of Planning and Intergovernmental Relations Patricia Bott said during a March 23 School Board workshop. Shifting sixth graders into the middle schools, in concert with an overdue rezoning, could help, Bott said.

“Where we’re at right now, we would definitely need to rezone to balance out enrollment,” Bott said. That would be necessary regardless of how the district shifts grade levels, Bott added — just moving sixth graders to middle schools without rezoning could just convert the district’s elementary school capacity problems into middle school capacity problems.

At the urging of School Board member Colleen Conklin, district staff looked at the possibility of switching to a K-8 instruction model, but didn’t recommend it.

Although students in K-8 schools do seem to show a slight increase in performance, a district staff member said, it’s likely not enough to make a significant difference in Flagler County or to affect the district’s school grades and would entail other costs, such as monitoring to keep the older students separated from the youngest ones.

Staff members recommended that the district move to a K-5th-grade elementary school and 6-8th grade middle school model.

School Board members will vote on the proposal at a future board meeting. If they approve it, the district will work to ensure that neighborhoods aren’t divided in the rearrangement or zoning shift, district staff members said.

Tyner said it could be, but noted that the department has two planners at the moment, when the city’s size would call for four or five.

“We are extremely busy right now — we’re short staffed,” Tyner said.

Tyner suggested that Planning Board member Jake Scully serve as the Planning Board’s liaison while the planning department considers options.

“Then we can work together, and maybe staff can draft some things up and talk to Mr. Scully about it and then bring it to a workshop,” as the department did when it considered changes to the city’s Land Development Code, Tyner said.

AIRPORT COMMONS LAND REZONING PLANNED

City staff have been working with the contractor that installed the new splash pad at James F. Holland Memorial Park to test the pad to ensure that it’s safe, according to a city of Palm Coast news release.

The city found a potential problem with an adhesive around the splash pad’s fall protection areas, and some separation of materials, after switching the splash pad on for the first time.

Fixing the problem may mean re-installing the fall protection areas, but the project will remain in budget and the fix isn’t expected to add additional costs, according to the news release.

“We are excited to bring this addition to James F. Holland Memorial Park,” city Parks & Recreation Director Lauren Johnston said, according to the news release. “Identifying this issue is a testament of the hard work and careful attention to detail by our staff.

The team is committed to providing a splash pad that is safe and usable without interruption once opened.”

The city will continue to update the community on the splash pad project’s progress and will provide a timeline once one has been determined, according to the city government news release.

The parcel of commercial land known as Airport Commons, on the southeast corner of State Road 100 and Airport Road, is being rezoned following its annexation from Flagler County to the city of Palm Coast.

The Planning Board voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council rezone the parcel, which currently bears county government zoning designations, and convert them to the equivalent city zoning designations.

“The proposed amendment will protect the existing commercial uses that are on that property,” said city Senior Planner Jose Papa. “... It’s consistent with other similarly situated parcels.”

City should slow down on costly tennis center upgrades Dear Editor: I am glad the city of Palm Coast is using citizen surveys to gauge the community. Unfortunately, the most recent survey exposed several flaws in the non-scientific survey.

For instance, although 2,970 people did complete the survey, an alarming 7,060 people started but didn’t complete the long 40-question exercise. Keep in mind that over 80,000 people didn’t even look at the survey.

Additionally, at a recent City Council meeting, Councilman Ed Danko pointed out that the answers were predetermined, with no way to present an alternate response.

Councilman Danko also pointed out that if a question was left blank, the survey couldn’t be submitted. The predetermined answers and the inability to skip a question skewed the results and reduced the survey to a relatively useless tool.

However, the city is using these skewed answers to justify its position on various subjects. One such subject is the expansion of the Palm Coast Tennis Center to include, among other things, six pickle ball courts, a two-story clubhouse with a balcony to overlook a proposed stadium and some added concession stands. A nice idea but costly and bad timing.

The city presented the number of users of the facility as a justification for the project. But, the count for the number of people using the current tennis facilities at the Palm Coast Tennis Center is also skewed. The reported 14,293 annual users doesn’t mention that this number includes repeat users. In fact, if we take the 14,293 number of users presented and divide it by 365 (number of days a in a year), we get an average of 39

people using the facility per day.

Is this small number of users worth the phase 1 suggested facility upgrade amount of almost $6 million during this pandemicinduced unstable economy?

This enormous price tag doesn’t include the planned phase 2 costs that have not yet been made public.

Equally important is the fact that for this expansion project the city doesn’t have a certified financial plan, a break even point identified, a calculated return on investment, nor the cost of ongoing maintenance. It appears to be a form of “build it, cross your fingers and hope it works” idealism. That is fine if it is someone’s personal investment funds, but a big chunk of this project is from taxes and fees collected from residents and businesses.

For a comparison, Flagler Beach has been presented with a pickle ball court idea with a comparatively paltry cost of $93,327. A wish list is great, but let’s start small.

Share your WastePro experiences before contract is renewed Dear Editor: During the past year, I have experienced truly bad service from WastePro. Today was the last straw.

Half of my household trash was left on the street. The workers saw it and simply drove off. When I called the city, I was told that it isn’t in their contract to pick up anything that falls out of the bin.

I was further informed that all trash must be placed in plastic bags and then placed in the trash container. Aside from the fact that I had never been

informed of that rule (I wonder how many residents know this), it does explain why every trash day the neighborhood is strewn with trash.

Among the many other incidents this year: no pickup on a scheduled day, ignoring my neighbor’s garden trash for weeks, skipping my recycling.

As the WastePro contract is being renegotiated, I urge everyone who has experienced similar problems to let the city know. Fill out the survey or call 386-986-2360.

We want wildlife habitat, not people and cars in city Dear Editor: A few weeks ago we read the results of a survey asking what people value most about living in Palm Coast.

They said the environment and wildlife. Well, the way the city is allowing others to build 210 homes here, 245 homes there, a gated community here and now plenty of pickle ball courts, they are destroying the wildlife habitat — no to mention the traffic.

What a shame this is! When we moved here 20 years ago, we did it for the serenity of the place and the wildlife around us. We used to see deer going down our street; now, what we see are “people” and “cars” — all what we don’t want to see.

They are not protecting the wildlife habitat whatsoever, and in few years it will look like a little Orlando!

After teachers and union officials lined up to oppose the bill, a Senate committee March 17 approved a proposal that would place a series of new restrictions on education unions.

The bill, in part, would prevent school boards from deducting union dues from teacher paychecks. That change in longstanding practice would lead to teachers having to directly pay dues to their unions. “This is basically what is known as paycheck protection,” Baxley said. But educators and union leaders from across the state testified against the bill, with some pointing to the role that teachers have played during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill would not apply to other types of public unions, such as unions that represent lawenforcement officers, firefighters and rank-and-file state workers.

With the full Senate poised to take up the issue, a plan that would abolish an influential panel that can place proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot began moving forward March 17 in the House. The House Civil Justice & Property Rights Subcommittee, in a 12-4 vote, backed a measure (HJR 1179) that would ask voters in 2022 to eliminate the state Constitution Revision Commission.

Traffic stop leads to arrest of armed man wanted in Georgia for murder

Lamar Johnson, 40, dies after driving into Club House Drive canal

A routine traffic stop at the Wawa on State Road 100 in Palm Coast let to the arrest of an armed man wanted in Georgia for homicide. Deputies used a stun gun multiple times to subdue the man when he resisted arrest and reached for a handgun in his waistband.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Deputy First Class Crista Rainey conducted a traffic stop on a white Dodge Charger at the Wawa at 11 p.m. March 17 after seeing it traveling at 63 mph in a 50 mph zone.

The car smelled of cannabis, but both the driver and the passenger, 21-year-old Shaquan Moore, said they did not have any narcotics or medical marijuana prescriptions in the vehicle.

The driver was asked to exit the vehicle and was secured pending the investigation.

Moore was then asked to exit the vehicle, but began to resist deputies and tried to run while reaching for his waistband. Rainey called for backup as Shaquan continued to resist arrest.

Deputy Aaron Clay and Deputy Aaron Beausoleil arrived while Shaquan was resisting.

Several warnings were given to Shaquan to stop resisting or he would be tased.

Deputy Beausoleil then administered a total of four drive stuns as Shaquan continued to resist and would not bring one hand away from his waistband.

Shaquan was eventually secured in handcuffs. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered from Shaquan’s waistband.

Shaquan was found to be a fugitive from Fulton County, Georgia, with an active warrant for homicide. Shaquan was medically cleared at Advent Health Palm Coast for minor abrasions from resisting arrest.

Shaquan was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and charged with Resisting Arrest with Violence and Possession of a Concealed Firearm. He was additionally arrested for the Fulton County charges.

“This goes to show that no traffic stop is ‘routine’ and a simple speeding violation can quickly escalate into a violent encounter with a very dangerous individual,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “DFC Rainey had no idea that she was pulling over a fugitive wanted for murder. This could have easily turned into a deadly encounter but our deputies reacted quickly, used their training to safely take this suspect into custody and, thankfully, God was watching over our deputies last night.”

A probable cause search of the vehicle yielded a small amount of Cannabis. The driver was given a verbal warning for speeding and the possession of cannabis. He was subsequently released with his vehicle from the scene.

Lamar Montell Johnson, a 40-year-old Palm Coast resident, died March 18 after driving into a canal near the intersection of Club House Drive and Carol Court.

A 59-year-old resident of a nearby house told dispatchers that he went outside to smoke a cigar at about 11:20 p.m. and saw a car upside down in the canal behind his home, according to Flagler County dispatch notes.

The resident and his 32-yearold son jumped into the water and pulled Johnson out of the car while another relative spoke with county emergency dispatchers.

Johnson was not conscious, and the men started CPR, but he did not respond.

A Fire Rescue crew arrived, and declared Johnson dead at 11:27 p.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear if there might have been other people in the car, and the county placed its emergency helicopter on standby while the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team checked for a second victim before determining that there had been no other people in the vehicle.

The Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash, finding that Johnson had been driving west on Casper Drive approaching Club House Drive when he traveled into the grass embankment between Cardwell Court and Carol Court and into the canal. The FHP report does not list a cause for the crash.

Southbound Club House Drive was shut down for the investigation and reopened at 3:39 a.m.

Operation TIDES aims to decrease fatal crashes The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Flagler Beach Police Department and the Bunnell Police Department, are combining efforts to participate in Operations TIDES, a traffic education and enforcement operation focusing on deterring Texting while driving, Impaired driving, driving while Distracted or Exhausted, and Speeding.

Flagler County’s fatal crashes and crashes with injuries increased in 2020, and the data revealed that the majority of the crashes occurred on state roads.

“Agencies participating in this operation will be stepping up enforcement efforts within our jurisdiction in an effort to save lives by preventing improper driving habits, which jeopardizes the public safety of others traveling on roadways within Flagler County,” Sheriff Rick Staly said.

The focus for the operation will be state roads including Interstate 95, US-1, SR-11, SR-100, and SRA1A. A joint operation is planned for each month in 2021.

Seeking demolition, county sues owners of derelict motel on Old Dixie The structure attracts crime and presents a public safety hazard, according to the county government.

The old derelict motel on Old Dixie Highway — its windows broken out, its pool filled with pea-soup colored water and its interior coated in mold and a nesting place for rats — has frus-

trated county officials and area residents for years. Now, the county is suing.

“It’s the first time we have used the public nuisance statute to address a situation in Flagler County,” Flagler County Attorney Al Hadeed told county commissioners during a March 15 County Commission meeting.

The county has filed for temporary and permanent injunctive relief and is seeking the demolition of the former Holiday Travel Park, at 2251 S. Old Dixie Highway across from the main entrance to Plantation Bay. If the owners won’t do it, the county is seeking

a court order that will allow it to demolish the building and place a lien on the property to recoup its costs.

“The basis for that case is that the motel has been abandoned, is unsecured, there’s a large amount of refuse — overgrown vegetation, vegetative debris — throughout the premises,” Hadeed said. “Also on the property is an unsecured and partially filled swimming pool containing green stagnant water. We have determined that the motel is unsafe, unsanitary … that it constitutes a fire hazard, is dangerous to human life and is a hazard to the safety and health of Image courtesy of the Flagler County government

Office has documented problems at the location, which is a frequent subject of complaints.

The county government has issued a certificate deeming the property an unsafe structure under the Florida Building Code.

The Florida Department of Health in Flagler County has secured a state sanitary nuisance order against the property, Hadeed said, but the owners have not complied with it.

The county recently met with potential purchasers of the property who’ve said they would be willing to remediate it, but in the meantime, Hadeed said, the county has filed to secure a court hearing.

or two days in April, Sunrise Park in Holly Hill will become a hub of art.

The Holly Hill Arts Festival, presented by Helping Hands Thru Arts, will feature over 90 juried, regional, and national artists on April 10 and 11. While overlooking the Halifax River, festival attendees will be able to peruse art from both professionals and students, as Holly Hill School students will also have art on display.

Though the festival is free, the presenters are hoping to raise $1,000 to support the art and music programs at the Holly Hill School.

Among the local artists taking part is Ray Brilli, of Palm Coast, who will be showcasing several new seascapes in the festival, all created in his signature impressionistic style, a result of spontaneous brush strokes.

One of his favorite things to do to gain inspiration is drive down to Daytona Beach Shores, pull his car right up on the beach and paint. If he hasn’t painted for a few days, he finds himself eager to return to the easel.

that by the end of the day, you’ve accomplished something — you’ve done something well,” he said.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

For Ormond Beach artist Mary Wentzel, it will be her first year taking part in the annual Holly Hill Arts Festival, a result of her finally dedicating herself fulltime to her own art after over two decades of being in the museum education field.

“When the pandemic hit, and it looked like it was going to continue for a while, I was forced to really reinvent my future, and so

I became a full-time artist, which is what I always have loved to [do] my whole life,” Wentzel said.

Shortly after receiving a degree from the University of Central Florida, Wentzel was hired as an assistant at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach.

Over time, she rose to become a co-curator of education, and then moved on to other museums in the area.

“When you’re an educator, you really continue to learn more and more things, and what I’ve learned over the years, I’ve turned into artwork,” Wentzel said.

One of her favorite pieces will be on display at the festival. Titled, “Bromeliads and Orchids,” the watercolor and acrylic ink piece is the epitome of what Wentzel focuses on with her art.

“Color is a big part of my work, and also detail and design,” she said.

Brilli aims to capture the light, the drama and the brilliance of color in his oil paintings, but not in a photorealistic way.

He did enough detail-oriented work in his past career as a graphic artist for advertising agency in Manhattan, New York, in the 1970s-1980s, he said.

“When I came home on the weekends, I wanted to do my own thing,” Brilli said. “By being an impressionist, my goal is not to make my paintings look like a photograph. To me, that’s boring.”

THE ABILITY TO CREATE

Art has always been a big part of Wentzel’s life.

“It was something that I really was able to lean on in times that were tougher,” Wentzel said. “It was something that was always there for me, and I always felt I got a lot of confidence and joy out of painting and drawing, and making things.”

She said she feels lucky to have the ability to create. Before focusing on watercolors, she was trained as a children’s book illustrator. Now, she’s branching out into found object sculptures and murals.

The FHS recently received a Quaker parrot named “ M a g i c Bean,” who was in great distress.

He brought back s o Maddy many mem- and Magic Bean ories of when I used to try to become friends with Zarro, a cockatiel from when I was a child.

Bean gave me these eyes of distress, discomfort and fear. What was strange is that he didn’t bite me or act violently. We made eye contact, and I knew I needed to help him. He had balding all over, had an overgrown beak and an upper respiratory infection.

Our veterinarians suggested that we take Magic Bean to a veterinarian who specialized in avian medicine. So we called Pine Lakes Animal Hospital. Magic Bean received a full exam, three antibiotics, and cream for his itchy skin.

I took Magic Bean home to become his foster parent. I have two pit bulls who instantly fell in love with the bird, but the bird chases and bullies them. (Yes, the little bird bullies two pit bulls.)

Magic Bean (or just “Bean”) follows me everywhere I go. He is out of his cage all day, and goes in his cage at night to sleep. I don’t want him to feel like he is trapped.

He knows how to kiss, and makes smooch/kiss sounds, licks your hands like a kiss. He enjoys flying around my entire house. He learned to say, “Pretty bird.”

About a month into fostering Bean, I came home from work one night tired and super hungry. While quickly eating dinner, I swallowed a bite of pasta too fast and I starting choking.

After coughing for a few minutes, I was OK and didn’t think much of it. That same night around 9 p.m., I put Bean back into his cage and noticed he was coughing and wheezing. Knowing his history of upper respiratory infections, I was quite concerned.

When I talked to Pine Lakes again, we figured out that Bean was mimicking my own cough.

I was in shock but super happy that Bean was in great health.

Needless to say, I am no longer Magic Bean’s foster mom. I’m his real mom. I adopted him, and he adopted me. I love this little dude.

Flagler County completes 179 acres of prescribed fire Flagler County’s goal with prescribed fire in Princess Place Preserve is to restore natural fire back into ecosystems and remove hazards fuels.

Flagler County on March 16 completed its fifth successful prescribed fire at Princess Place Preserve since January to restore natural fire back into ecosystems and remove hazards fuels.

The Land Management Department with the assistance of Flagler County Fire Rescue, the Florida Forest Service and the Florida Park Service have used fire to eliminate hazard fuels on 179 acres this year within the preserve. Prescribed fires were conducted on the fol-

lowing dates: Jan. 7 (55 acres); Jan. 21 (46 acres); Feb. 26 (2-acre training burn); March 4 (55 acres); and, March 16 (21 acres).

“Fire is a natural and necessary component of wildfire mitigation within nearly all of Florida’s ecosystems,” said Prescribed Fire Program Supervisor Mike Orlando, who typically serves as “burn boss” during prescribed fires. “It is vital to our local maintenance and mitigation practices.”

Land Management maintains about 10,000 acres in Flagler.

“Of that acreage, about 3,000 acres receive fire with little to no additional work,” said Resiliency

and Resource Stewardship Manager Tim Telfer. “Another 1,500 acres should be maintained by fire, but require additional work such as mechanical mastication, or mulching, before fire can be safely returned.”

Mulching reduces the fire’s fuel and intensity, as well as the ecological impact it has on remaining vegetation. Controlling fire intensity and duration are key factors to ensure the health of a fire-dependent natural community.

area. Unplanned wildfires have a greater risk of being destructive, because the accumulation of vegetation serves as the fuel for these hotter, faster moving fires.

“The Heavy Equipment Operator Technician program at Flagler Technical College was born out of an industry need to replace aging operators with trained professionals,” said FTC Director Renee Stauffacher. “We are honored to partner with Flagler County for use of their equipment and land for students to train.”

An advisory committee was formed consisting of local companies that hire operators, including: S.E. Cline Construction; 4C’s Trucking and Excavation; J.D. Webber Construction Company; Halifax Paving; P&S Paving; Garney Construction; Flagler County; and the city of Palm Coast.

he smack of a ball hitting the sweet spot of a bat, trash talking from the dugout and the smell of hot dogs, all reminiscent of an iconic Yankees versus Red Sox baseball game, played out at the Wadsworth Park Senior Softball family memorial picnic on Friday, March 19, in

Flagler Beach.

After a year ravaged by COVID cancellations, the league was finally able to hold its annual family picnic. The day comprised four softball games played by league teams, a memorial ceremony honoring the players who had died, a smorgasbord and a surprise 90th birthday party for Commissioner Bob Seelig.

“I have been playing softball with this league for 26 years. I moved down here from Connecticut and joined this group of guys at Wadsworth Park,” said Seelig.

“They are a great group of people.

ball is a 69-and-older league consisting of 70 players divided into six teams who practice Tuesdays and play games Thursdays and Fridays at Wadsworth Park. The seniors used to play with younger players, but the 55+ age group would hit home runs over the short left field fence at Wadsworth so often that it was necessary to split up the league.

Now, 55+ and 65+ age divisions play at the larger fields of the Flagler County Fairgrounds in Bunnell.

Following game one between Tommy’s Mac Attack and John’s Misfits, which resulted in a 12-12 tie, and game two between Roland’s Junk Yard Dogs and Vic’s Vipers (Dogs won), league members held a memorial ceremony for players who had recently died. Team manager Tommy McNamara, also known as “Crazy Tommy Mac,” reflected about his friend and fellow player, Vic Clontz.

“Vic and I were softball buddies. We met in the parking lot in Bunnell and started talking softball. It was all over after that,” McNamara said.

“We are part of a softball brother- and sisterhood.”

As the day drew to a close, Larry’s Blasters won against Gerry’s Buzzards 13-11, and

Seelig reflected about the league.

He had been a runner his entire life and had taken a risk when he ventured outside his comfort zone and joined the Wadsworth league.

“I learned about 40 or 50 years ago that the things you regret in life are not the things you did,” he said. “It’s the things you didn’t do.”
