Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager has recommended James T. “Tom” Russell as the next principal of Flagler Palm Coast High School.

He will become the 13th principal at FPC since the school opened in 1974.

“I expect Tom to do a wonderful job at Flagler Palm Coast High School,” Tager said. “He is inheriting a great campus which is full of activity and expects to continue a long-standing tradition of excellence. As we went through this process, Tom came out as hungry, humble and smart. I feel he is the best choice for the FPC students, faculty, staff, and Flagler County

Russell has more than two decades of experience in education, as a teacher, principal, and administrator. He most recently served as superintendent of Schools for Volusia County Schools since 2015.

Russell holds a Master’s Degree from Nova Southeastern in Educational Leadership.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and History from Florida State University.

Russell begins July 1.

He will work with FPC’s retiring principal Bob Wallace over the coming days to ensure a smooth transition.

BRIEFS Bob Jones files to run for County Commission seat Palm Coast resident Bob Jones has filed to run for the Flagler County Commission District 5 seat.

Jones is running as a Republican, and is challenging incumbent Donald O’Brien, also a Republican. O’Brien has already filed for re-election. The primary election will be held in August 2020.

“I’m very good with budgets,” said Jones, a retired financial advisor. “I’m going to run based on two promises: I won’t raise taxes, under any condition ... and I’m going to work for $1 for each of the four years, and donate (the rest) to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson Foundation.” County Commissioners’ salaries were approximately $53,950 last year.

Jones was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009, and, in 2010, retired from Morgan Stanley, where he’d been a financial advisor specializing in commodities and high yield corporate bonds, he said.

Jones previously ran unsuccessfully for a Palm Coast City Council seat in 2007.

He filed to run for Florida Congressional District 6 in 2018, but withdrew from that race due to an injury, he said.

Jones is a U.S. Air Force veteran and founded his own company, Jones Property Management, in 1983, and had 17 full-time and four wartime employees at the time he sold 88% of the company in 1995, he said.

FDLE: Flagler had ninth best crime reduction in Florida

Jennifer Prevatt is Crime Stoppers Officer of the Year

Crime in Flagler County declined by more 20% in 2018 — the ninth best crime reduction out of Florida’s 67 counties, according to a report released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) June 24.

The rate is the lowest in the county in almost two decades, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Out of the 36 Florida counties with populations of 100,000 or more residents, Flagler was ranked second for reducing crime. Martin County in Southeast Florida had a slightly higher crime reduction.

Violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) is down 8.7%, and property crime (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft) is down 21.8%, according to the news release, while arrests were up 13.8% in Flagler County during 2018.

“We have a dedicated and motivated team serving our community and I attribute these amazing statistics to their dedication and proactive police work along with the new vision and initiatives my administration has implemented when I became Sheriff two years ago,” Sheriff Rick Staly said, according to the news release. “Our crime fighting strategy is working! We capitalize on using technology and data analytics to focus on the criminals who are responsible for most offenses.”

Deputy Jennifer Prevatt has been selected as the Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Flagler County for her outstanding service to the community, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Prevatt, Sheriff Rick Staly and Chiefs Mark Strobridge, Chris Sepe and Paul Bovino attended the Crime Stoppers 21st Annual Banquet on June 20.

Staly had nominated Prevatt for the award for outstanding police work on multiple cases and for her ability to identify criminals. In 2018, Prevatt responded to 750 calls for service and made 70 arrests, 45 of them for felonies.

“Deputy Prevatt is a shining example of how good old fashioned police work gets results and is a great representative of the dedicated deputies that serve our community,” Staly said. “She establishes relationships with individuals who live in her patrol area and is constantly gathering intelligence from the community, even going above and beyond by listening to jail phone calls and checking out known residences where wanted fugitives are believed to be hiding. I would never want her after me! Her commitment to excellence is an example to us all and she is very deserving of this award.”

Cold reception: further restrictions on church The city of Bunnell, overturning its planning board, is denying a church’s request for upgrades that would be used for visiting disaster relief teams.

No new showers. No new laundry facilities. No new bathrooms.

The city of Bunnell was unwilling to approve those upgrades at the First United Methodist Church of Bunnell as long as there’s any question that the requested facilities might be used for homeless people rather than the disaster relief workers the church hosts during declared emergencies.

The church and the city have been battling over the use of the church to host the county’s only cold weather shelter, called the Sheltering Tree, since the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board on May 31 ordered the church to stop serving as a cold weather shelter.

That meeting, as well as subsequent meetings about the issue, drew comments from local residents who said the church’s efforts to aid the homeless have been attracting homeless people to the residential neighborhood around the church, where they trespass, drink and do drugs, and intimidate the customers of nearby businesses.

tering Tree volunteers replied that the Sheltering Tree is open only infrequently — when the weather drops below 40 degrees, as it did 19 nights last year — and that homeless people would be in Bunnell whether the church aids them or not.

But even as the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board, at its May 31 meeting, shut down the Sheltering Tree — a decision the Sheltering Tree has said it plans to appeal — it agreed to approve another request from the church: The construction of new, ADA-compliant bathrooms, and the addition of new showers for teams of United Methodist disaster volunteers who use the church as a base during emergencies. The Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board made that approval contingent on the church updating its fire protection system and limiting the size of relief teams staying overnight to six people. The board also noted in its approval that the new additions are not to be used for

the homeless.

But Bunnell Community and Economic Development Director Rodney Lucas, who’d challenged church volunteers at the May 31 meeting for not properly following city procedure, appealed that approval to the City Commission, prompting the discussion at the commission’s June 24 meeting.

At the beginning of the meeting, he laid out a series of complaints about the church’s behavior: That the shelter has been operating without city permission, that the church doesn’t meet fire and life safety standards for overnight stays, that it doesn’t have enough on-site parking, and that its business tax receipt has not been updated to reflect its use as a shelter. Lucas also said there has been a “lack of communication with the neighbors and the city about when this type of use ... is occurring, to alert the city a higher level of city services may be needed and allow accommodations and preparations to occur.”

Church trustee Michael Kuypers responded that the church in fact does have a business tax receipt and a license to conduct relief work, and that it has not failed recent fire inspections and does have a fire inspection certificate.

“I know for a fact that finding a place to billet and sleep (volunteers) is extremely difficult,” Kuypers said. “A lot of times there’s just nothing available, because of the damage. ... Eliminating the church as an option for disaster response temporary housing ... would be a mistake.”

Volunteers stayed at the church for months after the recent hurricanes, he said, and “were totally unobtrusive to the neighborhood.” He noted that visiting relief teams also help the local economy by eating at local restaurants and getting gas at local gas stations.

The Rev. Terry Wines, the church’s lead pastor, reminded commissioners and audience members that the matter at issue for the June 24 meeting was the use of the church to house emergency workers, not the homeless.

“What we believe is opening our doors to relief workers to come and do work in our community and beyond is a biblical act,” Wines said. “The Sheltering Tree is a separate issue.”

But other speakers repeatedly said they saw the issues as linked: They were willing to support the use of the church for emergency teams, they said, but feared the facilities added for relief workers would end up being used for the homeless.

“Yes, this may not be about that, but no, I don’t trust them to just use the showers for the emergency workers,” said resident Roberta Nelson.

Board member Janet McDonald asked how gaming addiction would be different from a general addiction to devices.

“You don’t necessarily have to do gaming in order to have that addictive response to the dings, the buzzes,” she said.

“The difference is that the gaming goes beyond the addiction to dings and buzzes and whatever else; it’s intentionally meant for you to come back,” said Wolff.

“It’s one thing to go for a ding or a buzz, and then have something else override that.” But with gaming, he said, “you’re fully engulfed in something that takes you out of a world of depression and puts you in another place.”

McDonald suggested the district try to disseminate information about gaming addiction to parents, and Barbosa suggested posting information to the district’s website.

champion of the district’s Future Problem Solving program, said it seemed like the sort of issue the FPS teams could tackle — if Wolff would be interested in mentoring some of them.

“If you want to mentor, I bet I could get an FPS group to start with a program this year, and ... get some PSAs,” Dance said.

Wolff said that warning students about excessive gaming does seem to help.

“My enrichment group ... a majority of them responded to what I’d brought to their attention at the beginning of school and actually backed away from gaming, and purposefully came by to tell me, ‘I’ve stopped doing this and I notice my grades are coming back up.’ So that process does work. And that may teach the parents something, too,” he said.

“I’m not altogether convinced that there’s a big need for showers at the Methodist Church,” he said.

“I feel like they would be used for more than just (emergency workers).”

The Rev. James Bellino, pastor at the Church on the Rock, on U.S. 1, said there was nothing unusual about what the church is requesting: Even when there isn’t an emergency, he said, churches often host missionary teams.

“The church is trying to provide regular services that they have provided since they incorporated and became a part of this community,” Bellino said.

Mayor Catherine Robinson said the real issue is the showers and emergency workers; the bathroom upgrade only requires a building permit.

Commissioner Jan Reeger said the church is working at cross purposes to itself, “attempting to do two different things that are in conflict with each other.”

“I think with these cross purposes in play, I would have a problem ... even with the emergency scenario,” she said. “My inclination would be to deny the exception with a provision that if they wish to come back to us at a later time, we wouldn’t charge the application fee.”

The board voted unanimously in favor of her motion, overturning the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board’s previous approval.

School district hopes to educate parents about addictive potential of video gaming ‘Gaming disorder’ has been added to the International Classification of Diseases.

Most people associate addiction with substances: drugs, alcohol, cigarettes. But gambling can cause similar symptoms. And now experts — and school district officials — are concerned about a new form of addiction: video/ internet gaming.

Teacher Ed Wolff briefed the School Board on the subject during the board’s June 18 workshop.

He’d recently attended a conference about the subject, and believed he’d seen signs of disordered gaming in some of his students, who’d admitted to sneaking out of class to play video games.

He listed some potential signs: “Stealing begins, loss of shortterm memory, lying, sleep deprivation, loss of interest in academics ... antisocial behavior, lack of physical exercise, rewiring of the neural net connection. ... Defiance to authority — specifically because you pull them back from

the gaming — loss of motivation to complete tasks, loss of grades, loss of focus. The biggest downside to this is depression.”

Those symptoms can look like, mask, or be comorbid with other conditions or disabilities, he said.

“It’s an overlap, and we have to be very careful around that.”

The disorder has been added to the World Health Organization’s 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases, or ICD, and is defined by the WHO as a pattern of gaming behavior “characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.”

To be diagnosable, according to the WHO, it “must be of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning and would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.” It is not considered common. It is also described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

(DSM-5), but as a condition warranting further research before it can be considered a true disorder.

Wolff said the new video games that are potentially addictive are different from older video games.

“If you reach a plateau, and if you’re not successful, the game is designed to regenerate you and move you to that next plateau. It’s totally unlike any board game,” he said. “To compare the two categories ... one would be a glass of wine.

You know, the old games. You can decide whether you’re addicted or not. The new ones? Cocaine. ...

The most challenging game right now is ‘Fortnite.’ It is free at the open. That’s like walking around and giving free cocaine. And then they start buying in.”

He said he’d read a number of studies that had concluded that people addicted to gaming are susceptible to depression and to engaging in oppositional-defiant behavior.

“Parents, they don’t have any idea, and these days they use the iPad — it’s very sad to say it, but the iPad is there babysitting because the parents they are too

Steven J. Stone, 74, of Palm Coast, FL passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Steven was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 13, 1944, to the late Fred and Shirley (Mandelbaum) Stone.

Steven started playing the trumpet at age 9. He graduated from the Berkley College of Music. He was the band leader for 25 years of a group called Top Shelf; they played big band and 40’s music. He also was a mentor teaching trumpet lessons with some of his students moving on to successful careers. Steven moved to Palm Coast in 2013 from Massachusetts. He worked for Promo Works as an Engagement Specialist. Steven had a passion for cooking, enjoyed fishing and loved going to casinos where he would play the penny slots.

Steven is survived by his companion of 21 years, Nancy J. Iandoli of Palm Coast, FL, her children and his grandson, Eddy Iandoli; brother, Paul Stone (Lynn Kessler) of Chestnut Hill, Mass, their children and grandchildren; uncle, Billy Stone (Yanet) of Barcelona, Spain; step mother, Barbara Stone Sudikoff of Boynton Beach, FL and many other cousins. Steven is predeceased by his parents and just recently, his Aunt Elaine Elinoff.

FCSO’s Palm Coast office to relocate to Old Kings Road The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is moving its Palm Coast District 2 office location from 160 Cypress Point Parkway Suite C-107 to 17 North Old Kings Road, Suite D. The district office closed to the public on Wednesday, June 26 and reopens at the new location at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 27.

“This will be the final temporary location of the Palm Coast District Office until the new Sheriff’s District 2 Administration and Operations Center is completed behind the Palm Coast Library in the next two to three years,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We hope that the move is seamless for everyone, but do not hesitate to contact us if you need anything while the move is in progress.”

A Flagler County repeat offender, 36-year-old Corey Richard Lynch, faces up to life in prison as a result of a drug bust, according to an FCSO news release.

Deputies had arrested Lynch May 23 during a traffic stop after discovering a hidden compartment in the dashboard containing a loaded handgun and narcotics, including more than 10 grams of Fentanyl.

He already had a criminal record dating back to 2010, for burglary, assault and drug crimes.

On June 24, Lynch, who was already in custody from the May 23 arrest, was also charged with armed trafficking of fentanyl, armed possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of MDPV. “According to the Center for Disease Control, this guy had enough Fentanyl inside of his car to kill 20,000 people,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “In addition to the drugs, he also had a loaded gun. I am thankful that we were able to stop him before his poison or his gun were able to take a life.”

Palm Coast prepares to set Sheriff presses county to find more space for FCSO operations maximum millage rate JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Palm Coast is expecting a 6% increase in the city’s taxable value this year, for a total taxable value of approximately $5.3 billion. Last year, the city’s property value rose by 8.37%.

The city is in the process of determining its millage rate and budget for the coming 2020 fiscal year.

The city kept its millage rate flat at 4.245 ($4.245 per $1,000 worth of taxable value) in 2015, 2016 and 2017, then increased it to 4.5937 in 2018 and to 4.6989 in 2019. The city administration is currently recommending that the city keep its millage rate flat.

“I like the fact that we’re coming in flat, without any recommended increase,” Mayor Milissa Holland said during a City Council workshop June 25. “I go back to the fact of how may roads we still maintain; there’s things that we just have to do. Florida Park Drive is an example of it: We’re going to have to spend some money correcting a very strange road in the middle of our city. Those are just the necessities.”

The council will receive formal certification from the Property Appraiser’s Office of the city’s taxable value on July 1, will consider its maximum millage rate on July 9, and must notify the county Property Appraiser’s Office of its intended maximum millage rate within 35 days of July 1.

The agency’s current situation, Sheriff Rick Staly wrote, ‘could significantly compromise the safety of our community.’

TAX DOLLARS AT WORK Here’s how ad valorem tax dollars are divvied up in the city of Palm Coast: n 41% is used for streets and parks maintenance n 39% is used for fire protection n 15% is used for law enforcement protection n 3% is used for technology n 2% is used for capital projects.

The city’s current millage rate, 4.6989, is the fourth-lowest among Florida cities with populations between 70,000 and 100,000, Finance Director Helena Alves told council members.

The city in that population range with the lowest millage rate is North Port, with a millage rate of 3.4070, while the one with the highest is Fort Myers, with a rate of 8.4500.

“There’s a lot that goes into this, so when we get questions about taxes, it’s great to say where we fall on the range, but it’s also important to note just how many services we are able to provide with the amount we generate every year,” Alves said. “More than half of it goes for fire protection and police and law enforcement, with the other largest chunk going for streets and park maintenance.”

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly has written to the County Commission imploring the county to provide the Sheriff’s Office with more space for its deputies, and citing Florida law that requires counties to provide adequate space for constitutional officers.

“The law of Florida is very clear,” he wrote in the three-page letter dated June 25. “It is this County Commission’s responsibility to provide the Sheriff’s Office with the necessary space to serve the community.” The current arrangement, he added, “is totally inadequate and likely not in compliance with Florida law and the AGO Opinions.” (View Staly’s full letter at the online version of this story, at https://www.palmcoastobserver.com.)

The county has plans to build the Sheriff’s Office a new, larger branch office in Palm Coast, plus another in Bunnell, as well as a training building in Bunnell. But that will take time, and the FCSO needs space now, he wrote.

“I do not recommend a new expensive lease of temporary office space as that is not in the best interest of our taxpayers,” he wrote. “But, we are at a crisis point and this situation can no longer be allowed to continue with no resolution in sight.”

The FCSO’s staff has been

evacuated from its Operations Center on State Road 100 since June 2018 because more than two dozen employees began having symptoms they attributed to the building, which was found to have a mold problem.

Ever since, the agency’s staff has been divided between the jail administrative building and the county courthouse, where they share room with Clerk of Court staff. That arrangement was supposed to be short-term, Staly wrote.

The agency’s reduction in space due to the move — from 35,000 square feet to less than 6,000, he wrote — “creates service disruptions to the public.” The situation has “reached a crisis level” that “could significantly compromise the safety of our community,” he wrote.

He listed examples: The agency has been unable to create a Real Time Crime Center, because it doesn’t have enough space.

It doesn’t have a secure space for a cybercrimes unit, which handles cases that require “100% security and have very strict access requirements.”

The 17 detectives and two service dogs assigned to the FCSO’s Investigative Services Division are sharing a space designed for 11 people, and detectives do not have a private space to interview

victims and therefore have to use other agencies’ facilities.

The temporary Evidence Section at the jail complex reeks of marijuana, and the smell “permeates the Detention and Inmate Video Visitation building.”

“This situation could clearly compromise critical cases despite our best efforts,” Staly wrote.

He noted that the County Commission, on April 1, had voted to have a training center built in Bunnell that could be used as a temporary evidence complex, but, at this point, the land has not yet been cleared.

And, he wrote, the agency’s Record’s Unit and Public Service Office are sharing a space designed for one person, while the Human Resources, Finance and Legal sections are sharing space with the clerk of court’s operations, making it hard for employees to maintain confidentiality.

“It is time to take real action with a realistic temporary and cost effective solution that can be implemented quickly until the new District Office is built,” Staly wrote. “This situation demands action. A solution needs to be implemented by the Board of County Commissioners now for the safety of our community and to provide appropriate working conditions for the employees that serve and protect our community!”

Affordable housing effort needs your help

Dear Editor: I am writing in response to reader John Brady’s recent letter, “More apartments needed for low-income senior citizens in Flagler County.” I want to thank him for acknowledging the dire need for more affordable housing. We could not agree more.

At Housing Trust Group, our mission is to develop apartments that add value to every community we work with by delivering safe, clean, highquality affordable housing.

Every new development we build goes through a rigorous approval and compliance process following federal, state and local guidelines.

These include regulations that require apartments to remain affordable for up to a 50-year period with the signing of recorded restrictive covenants. Building new housing is expensive, and these restrictions make financing new developments quite challenging. We put in our own equity and assume debt, but often times the majority of funding comes from the federal low-income housing tax credit program.

Having said that, there are a finite number of tax credits available each year, which limits the funds that can be raised and the number of units that can be built. We can assure you that when we do receive funding, we are bound by law to only lease to residents who meet certain income restrictions (and age restrictions in some cases) and charge a reduced rental rate set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

There is strict government oversight to ensure we comply.

In this case, The Palms at Town Center Apartments is reserved for three distinct affordable rental household brackets, who either make at or below 30% of the area median income (AMI), at or below 60% AMI and no more than 80% AMI. Rents will range from as low as $234 for a one-bedroom unit for residents who make at or below 30% of AMI and up to $1,101 for a three-bedroom unit for residents who make no more than 80% of AMI. With that being said, we completely agree that the current amount of affordable housing units available is hardly a drop in the bucket in comparison to the demand for affordable housing. Although

The Palms at Town Center Apartments is an entirely affordable community, made possible through new tax laws approved by the federal government, we would build far more new affordable apartments each year if the financing were available.

We encourage residents who want more affordable housing to reach out to their elected officials, encouraging them to support newly proposed federal legislation that would expand the affordable housing tax credit program: The Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2019 (S. 1703/H.R. 3077). If this program were expanded, we could certainly create more safe, clean, high-quality affordable housing.

Volusia’s mistakes on homelessness Dear Editor: I found two articles in last week’s Palm Coast Observer, one on homelessness and the other discussing opioids here in Flagler County, to be quite interesting.

Kudos to the Observer, First United Methodist Church, Church on the Rock and Grace Tabernacle Ministries for efforts to highlight, inform and assist on the two local and national problems.

The drug crisis, I believe, of which opioids are a part, has been promoted by lobbyists, special interest groups, politicians, court judges. We see here another reason for congressional term limits to eliminate career politicians.

Has Flagler County learned a lesson from our neighbors in Volusia? There, “experts” and “advocates,” many seeking nothing more than jobs, began to “lobby” for the homeless with another nontaxpayerapproved burden starting at about $2 million, escalating to $6 million, and recently it was reported that monthly incomes were about half to meet costs.

Just another case of government starting in the middle or at the end of a problem that they must partly share the responsibility for.

How about government departments working with certified church agencies to meet with the homeless in conjunction with how a program helps them and what

part they are willing to play to make the united effort successful and less costly. I find it ironic and self-defeating that the homeless in Volusia County objected to re-locating to a new, comfortable facility because it was “too far from downtown.”

We want government “of the people, by the people, for the people” done right — we don’t want a few making decisions for the American citizenry.

Fire mitigation rules need to be changed

Dear Editor: We have a serious leadership deficit in Flagler Schools.

We are soon going to be seeking a new superintendent, although the efforts of our current School Board is to have yet another coronation attempt until the “king” is able to return. We must urge our two School Board members up for re-election in 2020, and the remaining three, to end the coronation discussions. Continuing the course set by Jacob Oliva, Janet Valentine and initially started by Bill Delbrugge, has shown demonstrably to now be heading us into the rocks. The time for that course to be sound is long past.

Current Superintendent James Tager hasn’t moved the rudder a single inch; what possibly makes anyone think he will change course upon his return?

A change with our superintendent must include a change of directors in order to change direction. The most significant departments — Finance, Curriculum and Technology — should be focused on immediately. Those three departments are the crux of the direction Flagler Schools will take in the future.

We must make those who are steering our ship know that continuing on our present course is unacceptable. We are at our worst; it is time for us to be better. They haven’t come to this conclusion on their own; what possibly makes anyone think they are willing to change now? Let’s not go down with ship or get crushed when the walls cave in.

Dear Editor: (Note: A version of the following was planned to be read at the Palm Coast City Council meeting on June 25.)

Recently, I requested a wildfire mitigation mowing to remove brush growth in excess of three feet (ordinance requirement) on a vacant lot next to my home. The ordinance (Sec 25-102) states that brush on undeveloped lots averaging over three feet tall within 30 feet of an existing home is considered a fire hazard and is subject to mowing.

My request for mowing was denied.

The reason given was that the brush did not contain specific plant species which contribute to uncontrolled fire to spread (saw palmetto, gallberry, fetterbush and wax myrtle). A subsequent inspection found that the brush did contain these species of plants and that mowing would be approved. My point of contention is simple: Brush is brush, and it burns no matter the species. Fire does not recognize specific plants. It burns everything, including the pine trees.

The city’s policy is ludicrous and nonsensical. There should be no qualification whatsoever as to what type of brush does and does not qualify for wildfire mitigation. All burns.

The devastating wildfires of 1985 and 1998 destroyed and damaged hundreds of Palm Coast homes. Systematic wildfire mitigation measures are necessary to avoid catastrophic loss to the community and residents. The city’s urban forestry department excellent.

Barbara Grossman informed me that the Florida Department of Forestry established the plant species criteria after the 1998 fires. This criteria applied to residential vacant lots will result in extremely high exposure to fires.

I urge the City Council to address this situation with the department of forestry. Vacant lots are not nurseries. Please help the unfortunate city residents who live next to vacant lots, which I consider a blight to our city. If you do nothing on this matter, you literally are playing with fire.

Third graders in Flagler Schools are reading well: 68% performed at or above grade level (10 points higher than the state average) on recent standardized tests. Flagler is now ranked 10th out of 67 counties, up from 21st last year, according to data released by Flagler Schools.

That improvement is something to be proud of. My own daughter Ellie was one of those third graders, so I want to thank her teachers for their hard work.

Besides the teachers, what else contributed to the high scores?

Two initiatives began at just the right time to help this crop of students. First was the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a free program (thanks to fundraising efforts) that sends a book to your child every month from birth to age 5. DPIL started in Flagler County in 2010, which is when this year’s third graders were born.

Today, there are 1,382 kids signed up in Flagler County, so it’s not a huge number, but I’m sure those kids have become better readers thanks to those books. (Visit shorturl.at/dzW13 to sign up your own child or donate to help someone else receive books in the mail through DPIL.)

The second initiative that helped these third graders was voluntary prekindergarten. Flagler Schools began offering VPK at every elementary school beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, which is the first year these kids were old enough to attend.

In my own home, I have seen the impact of another factor: the example of siblings.

My two older sons, Jackson and Grant, are avid readers, and that inspired Ellie to read the same books. Now, Ellie reads the most in the family — she even reads by night light when she’s supposed to be sleeping (ahem!).

And the trend continues with our youngest two children (yes, we have five total). Kennedy, 4, can’t read yet but has some simple books memorized, so she flips through the pages and recites them to our youngest, 1-year-old Luke.

The only complaint I have about this system is the physical pain. When Luke wants me to read him a book — and he seems to like only heavy board books with sharp edges — he whacks me in the forehead with it.

I figure this is a sign that he will become either 1) a Major Leaguer, or 2) an avid reader. Hopefully both?

Of course, some of this reading is also the result of restrictions on screen time in our home. But even though all their friends get to play unlimited video games, “Some day,” I tell my kids, “you’ll thank me.” In between grumbles and groans, they ask to go to the library again — and Luke takes aim with another board book.

On Friday, June 21, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit, with the assistance of the FCSO tactical team and United States Secret Service, served a search warrant at 11 Raemoor Drive in Palm Coast.

During the search, detectives located prescription pills, methamphetamine, fentanyl, used and unused needles, smoking pipes with cannabis residue, and drug paraphernalia. As detectives were announcing themselves at the start of the search warrant, one suspect attempted to flush narcotics and paraphernalia down the toilet.

Five suspects were located inside the residence and arrested on drug charges: Jordan Tyler Cheney, 26; Margaret Lynn Tillman, 37; John Wesley Jakobson, 40; Glenn James Moratto, 33; and Samantha Marie Tillman, 34.

Several printers and computers were also seized. Law enforcement officers suspect the printers were being used for printing counterfeit U.S. currency. That part of the investigation is ongoing.

“This is another great example of people in the community seeing activity that didn’t look right and reporting it to law enforcement and then working with our federal partners,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Now we have five more drug offenders off the streets. The owner of the residence was on scene at the time of the search warrant and told deputies that he will be starting the eviction process on anyone currently living at the residence who does not leave freely.

Further charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a registered sex offender June 21 for living in a tent across the street from the Apostolic Church of God, at 500 N. Pine St. in Bunnell.

The FCSO received an anonymous tip on May 23 that Jeremy Dwayne Miller, 30, was living in his girlfriend’s home across from the church, out of compliance.

Miller had registered a tent on East State Road 100 in Bunnell as his legal residence, and had confirmed that information on June 11. He’d been designated a sex offender in 2006 and was previously convicted of failure to properly register as a sex offender in 2014, according to a news release.

The FCSO’s Major Case Unit and Community Policing Division surveilled both the tent on SR 100 and the home at which Miller was reportedly actually residing, near the church. They found that he was in fact living with his girlfriend in the home near the church. When detectives interviewed Miller, he admitted he’d lived out of compliance for more than a year, according to the news release.

“It is a felony under Florida law to conceal or harbor a sexual offender not in compliance, or to withhold information from law enforcement regarding a sex offender who is out of compliance,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “These laws are designed to protect our children and allow law enforcement to know where sex offenders are living to ensure compliance. Thankfully an anonymous person alerted us to this offender.”

Jury finds Michael Wilson not guilty of attempted murder The jury found him guilty of a lesser charge: attempted battery.

A Flagler County jury has found Michael Scott Wilson, 33, not guilty of attempting to murder his wife by using an electrical device wired to her front door to electrocute her when she entered the home. It did find him guilty of a charge of attempted battery, a misdemeanor. The attempted battery charge was a lesser included offense for a charge the prosecution was seeking: aggravated battery on a pregnant person. The jury also found him guilty of grand theft of a firearm, a third degree felony carrying a potential prison sentence of up to five years.

The jury of five women and one man deliberated for two hours and 42 minutes before coming to its verdict on Friday, June 21.

In the prosecution’s telling, Wilson had wired his wife’s front door to an electrical socket in an attempt to kill her in late December 2017 because he was angry with her: He’d accused her of cheating with another man, had told others he suspected that the child she was carrying wasn’t his, and had threatened to file charges against her for removing money from his bank account without his permission.

He’d worked for her father, but was fired and left town before

contacting her again before that Christmas and agreeing to share it with her and other family members out of state. Before he did so — unbeknownst to her — he went to her home on White Hall Drive in Palm Coast and rigged the electrical device to her door such that it would electrocute anyone who placed a key in the socket while also placing a hand on the doorknob. He instructed her to use the front door when she arrived home, and to make sure that she didn’t have their young daughter with her when she did, the wife told the court.

In the defense’s narrative, Wilson had returned to the home in Palm Coast and found that someone had placed a firearm in a cabinet above the stove and installed surveillance cameras around the house. He was alarmed by that, and had taken the gun and rigged the door to shock a potential intruder — not his wife. Wilson said on the witness stand that he’d told his wife to use the garage door when she arrived home, not the front door.

The wife, suspicious because of Wilson’s statements to her, asked her parents to check on the house and the door. They arrived and found that the area around the knob was charred. They called the Sheriff’s Office, and a deputy kicked the door in — causing a loud electrical pop — and found the device. The prosecution played for the jury the deputy’s body camera footage of the moment he broke in the door and found the contraption.

when he was captured in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Dec. 28, 2017, Wilson lied over and over again.

Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark played a video of that interview in court on June 21, the final day of Wilson’s trial. It was the last piece of video evidence jurors saw.

First, Wilson told the detective questioning him, Michael Washam, that he hadn’t been to Florida since the previous summer.

Then, later in the same interview after Washam had warned Wilson that his movements could be tracked through his cell phone records, Wilson admitted he’d been to Florida before Christmas, but insisted he didn’t go to his wife’s home and was in the state

less than an hour, just to get some tattooing equipment he’d left at a local tattoo shop.

Then, he admitted he’d driven past the house. Then that he’d entered the garage, thought he still adamantly denied going into the house.

Then, again under pressure, he admitted he’d entered the house.

(He’d later admit to having been there for about three hours.)

The detective confronted him with photos of the electrical device that had been affixed to the door.

“Did you do this?” Washam asked.

“No.” “Even to scare her?”

“No.” Then, told that he’d been

charged with attempted firstdegree murder, Wilson tried to say the device visible in the photos wouldn’t really do any harm.

“That’s — that’s a hoax, there’s nothing,” Wilson said. “You could sleep on that door with a wet towel around you, that wouldn’t do anything. That’s a trickle charger sir, that’s not a jump. ... This is definitely a real whoopsie-daisy on their (law enforcement’s) part. ... I had nothing to do with that: 100%, nothing to do with it.”

He did have something to do with it, though, and admitted so to law enforcement later.

Flagler County Veterans Services Officer David Lydon, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves, departs in the first week of July for a six-month tour of duty in the Middle East and Asia, including Qatar and Afghanistan.

Lydon will be based in Qatar, but expects to travel to eight or more countries and 14 different bases.

He’s been to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Afghanistan in the past.

“I’m pretty exited about it,” he said. “I haven’t done a deployment like this since 2005, so I feel kind of obligated — that it’s my turn again since I’m still wearing the uniform. And both of my sons have been this year; I have an older son who just got back from Iraq this February.”

Another son, an Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot, is in Afghanistan, and Lydon hopes to see him while he’s there.

Lydon will be serving as an advisor to the Air Reserve component, “Going to wherever the Air Reservists and Air National Guard airmen are assigned, and providing them with information about their rights, responsibilities, their employment rights, insurance, health insurance, their pay and

benefits, and talking with their first sergeants and commanders, making sure that the airmen know that their families back home know what their benefits are as well, and that they’re being taken care of back at home.” Lydon will also help inform them about their VA benefits once they come off orders, he said.

He’ll be traveling with a colonel from the National Guard.

In Lydon’s absence, Assistant Veterans Services Officer Eric Flores Febles will serve as acting veterans services officer, Lydon said. The county has also hired an assistant for Febles: John Sowell, a retired Army major and former Bunnell city commissioner.

“We’re confident that the office will be in good hands and still maintain good service to our veterans and families,” Lydon said. He asked that locals “Remember that our fellow Americans are over in dangerous places, and let’s keep them in our prayers. Things things seem to be getting a little hotter in that area, so those prayers will be important.”

Lydon hopes to be able to continue hosting the weekly Veterans On Point radio show on Flagler Broadcasting WNZF News Radio, he said. It airs at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays.

“Now, suddenly, he says not only was he in Florida, he actually went into the house because he had to get all of his stuff, and ‘OK, yes, I put a device on the door, but it wasn’t for my wife.’”

Regina Nunnally, the public defender representing Wilson, said that after Wilson had gone to the home and found the gun and the cameras, he’d asked his wife about them, and she’d answered evasively, adding to his concern.

“And at that point, Mr. Wilson panicked; he just sees this stuff sitting there — what is this stuff for?” Nunnally said. “So he does put a trickle wire, and he does put up a barricade.”

The door was also barricaded from the inside with dining room chairs — in order, according to the prosecution, to force anyone trying to enter to hold the key and the knob to try to force it open, and, in doing so, close the electrical circuit.

Deputies later spoke with the wife, who said Wilson had had a medical episode several months before and fallen to the ground, and was later Baker Acted and received a diagnosis — paranoid schizophrenia — before moving out of the home.

But the jury was not allowed to hear that: Wilson did not enter an insanity defense, and the prosecution told the judge that his crystal meth use — he’d had some on him when he was caught in Tennessee — would have been responsible for psychotic symptoms.

records — which demonstrated Wilson’s ire at his wife over money, and his concerns about her unborn child’s lineage — in order to establish potential motive for the attempted murder charge.

She noted that he’d arranged his wife’s ultrasound photos neatly on a counter inside the home.

“He was just furious with her; he was done,” Clark said. “Had (the victim) closed the circuit on that door, she wouldn’t be here today.

And he did that because he didn’t want (the victim). He didn’t want the baby she was carrying because he didn’t believe it was his. But he wanted (his daughter).”

To establish premeditation, she pointed to the amount of time he’d had to consider his actions: A nine-or-so-hour drive to Palm Coast from Tennessee, and the same stretch back. Then there was the fact that computer records showed that he’d Googled how to make a trickle charger into a booby trap. And the fact that he’d changed his Facebook status to “widowed” by the time he was arrested. When challenged by Clark in court, he said he’d done that because he thought it “sounds better to say widowed than having a failed marriage.” When asked why he hadn’t written “single,” he replied, “Because single wouldn’t be true.”

Nunnally pointed out that Wilson’s Facebook page was full of falsehoods: he’d also written, untruthfully, that he’d attended high school in Compton, California and had studied computer science at DeVry University.

“Everything in here is untrue, including the ‘widowed,’” Nunnally said. “Everything on that was inaccurate. It wasn’t true.”

Wilson will be sentenced before Judge Terence Perkins on Aug. 2.

Palm Coast Songwriters Festival has TDC support to draw tourists in 2020 BRIAN McMILLAN EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Two weeks after the Palm Coast Songwriters Festival was held in May, a group of those same writers performed again at one of the most famous little venues in Nashville: the Bluebird Café.

James Slater, a pianist who wrote hits such as the Grammy-nominated “In My Daughter’s Eyes,” recorded by Martina McBride, brought the writers together for the Bluebird event, which he hosts every year as a cancer fundraiser.

“I wanted to reprise what we had down in Palm Coast,” Slater said. “We had stories to tell about the Palm Coast event.”

In a phone interview with the Palm Coast Observer on May 21, Slater said, “Today, I wrote with Tony Lane, one of the best writers in town, and he was so sorry he couldn’t come, but he said he wanted to go next year. So I think it’s really getting a good buzz.”

That’s music to the ears of Garry Lubi, who organized the event again this year. He estimated that over 800 people attended the three-day event, including dozens from out of town responsible for over 180 hotel room nights.

One couple told him they were visiting from Virginia and saw a flier in March at Captain’s BBQ, so they returned to town two months later for the festival.

As Lubi looks toward the thirdannual event, in 2020, he is optimistic that the festival will continue to grow. Tweaks for next year include reducing the price for lawn seats and trying to get the word out that this is a unique opportunity to see world-class talent in Palm Coast.

The dates for next year are May 1-3, the weekend before the Key West Songwriters Festival, which is an established draw in the industry. Many writers who are going to perform in Palm Coast in 2020 will then travel to Key West.

Another major change for next year will be the direct involvement of the Tourist Development Council, according to interim director Amy Lukasik. She said that, if the County Commission votes to approve the expenditure, the TDC is planning to invest $15,000 in marketing and other strategies for the 2020 event.

That’s the same amount the TDC has spent on the event each of the past years, but that money came out of a discretionary fund and was used to pay for things like venue rental and equipment charges, not necessarily to help draw bigger crowds.

With better marketing, Lukasik believes the event has great potential for attracting visitors to Flagler County.

“I do, I really do,” she said, “with the quality of songwriters

that he (Lubi) has.”

(She added that the TDC could be focusing on cultural events more in the future; in the past, sports has been the prime focus.

She hopes to have a communitywide strategic planning session for the TDC this year.)

Lubi feels the TDC’s involvement will help the Palm Coast Songwriters Festival to flourish.

“It has the real potential to become a very substantial tourism draw,” he said.

Slater agrees.

“That festival is going to be promoted here in Nashville, and we’re going to be bringing more people out there,” Slater said. “I can’t wait to come down there and play again.”

They really are true stories to a lot of people — anything we write.

Aunt Rosie isn’t a real person; it just fit. But of course, there are people who have an Aunt Rosie, and everybody goes through stages of life.

That’s the beautiful thing about country music: You gotta have a good story; you have to talk about real life.

Carrie said, “I can’t perform that song live because I can’t sing it. It’s so personal for me.” So we didn’t write it for her in mind; we just wrote the truth.

The irony is, and writers learn, that the more specific and truthful you are, the more it is a global message.

You wrote “In My Daughter’s Eyes” all by yourself. What is it like to get a solo credit on a Grammy-nominated song (recorded by Martina McBride)?

That was a huge thing to me. I wrote that song alone, the lyrics and mysic, and that doesn’t happen too often. Nashville is a co-writing town.

The first version, the demo, had my voice, but when I got here to Nashville, we got Gretchen Wilson to sing it — she was just singing demos at that time. After she sang the demo and then Martina sang it, then Gretchen got the record deal and won the Grammy

Another song, “The High Cost of Living,” I had the title, and I tried to write that one alone, but I couldn’t finish it. I got together Jamey Johnson and we wrote it together, and that became our next Grammy song.

How many songs do you have that you’re actively shopping around at once?

Right now, I’ve got many songs.

Old Dominion has a new song on their new record. Tenille Arts, Keith Urban. They’re all in various stages: Some are recorded and mixed, some are recorded but not mixed. About 20 others are being shopped by publishers. So you have 20-25, and that changes because you have new songs.

What are some strategies for telling a story in so few words?

People’s attention spans are short nowadays. It’s challenging.

The strategy is to be as simple as possible, but as succinct as possible.

You have to write a hundred songs to write a really incredible song. I look at it like a baseball player, like Babe Ruth. They don’t hit it out of the park every time; they hit singles, doubles, and then everything connects and one goes out of the park. You do it every day, and you get the lyirc and the music, and you get those magic songs.

What songwriters do you admire today?

One I love is Kacey Musgraves.

She’s unconventional. I like anybody that breaks the mold, somebody that can write something a little bit different.

The city of Palm Coast’s new drone program has take flight.

The city’s first drone project alone has already paid for the drone used, because expert monitoring costs weren’t needed to monitor an osprey nest.

The city of Palm Coast’s new drone program has taken flight.

After more than a year of planning, preparing and training, the city has three drones and a dedicated team overseeing the program where this new technology will be used for various projects to help operations be more efficient and reduce costs.

The initial cost of the program was $8,000, and the annual cost in the coming years will be between $4,500 to $6,000, for

insurance, repairs, batteries or any other maintenance.

The drones will be used in the departments of Information Technology; Planning; Communications and Marketing; Utility; Construction Management and Engineering; Building; and, eventually, the Fire Department.

Some of the projects include mapping city property accurately, performing inspections, creating promotional video content and surveying damage following weather emergencies.

The drones have both video and image recording abilities and can capture high resolution imagery

from high up in the air. The drone dedicated for the Fire Department has thermal capabilities that will be used to monitor structure fires and brush fires.

“This is groundbreaking technology for the city at a time when we are on the cusp of great things,” Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland said. “We are at an important point in our growth to make wise investments in our technology where the benefits will be realized throughout the community in the months and years to come.”

For the first official drone project, the environmental experts in Community Development

asked if a drone could inspect a tower at 22 Utility Drive out of concern that a nest there may be active and may contain osprey eggs or young. By using a drone to inspect the nest, the city was able to determine that the nest was not active and that there were no eggs or young present at initial inspection.

The drone operator took great caution to utilize the drone’s high resolution camera to confirm the presence of adults and/or young from a safe distance to minimize disturbance.

City field crews continued to monitor it from the ground and with additional drone inspections and have since spotted an osprey visiting the nest, but are taking the appropriate precautions to ensure its safety and welfare as construction on the two projects continue. Since the drone was available to inspect the nest, it saved the city between $1,500 to $2,000 in expert monitoring costs that the city did not need to request. The drone cost approximately $1,800 with all accessory equipment.

Some upcoming drone projects include capturing images and video in Town Center, the cityowned parks, city-sponsored events and post-hurricane or other disaster images to aid in the cleanup and rescue efforts.

“The drone project perfectly synergizes into the city’s smart city and innovation efforts,” Holland said. “The core definition of a smart city means working more efficiently, with better results and trackable by data. These drones offer information achieving just that.”

GIS Specialist Austin Kladke brought the idea of drones to city management in 2018 after

realizing a need for up-to-date, high resolution imagery that was becoming a common request from many of city departments.

Kladke is a member of the Geographic Information Systems Division within the Information Technology Department and works with satellite imagery and geographic data on a daily basis.

After getting the green light from the City Council, he assembled a team of city employees to create the drone team and program.

As of now, three city employees have the appropriate qualifications to operate the drones.

These employees have licenses as required by local, state, and federal regulations.

The protocol when operating drones is to only fly on public property. At City Hall, since it is within five miles of the airport, operators must notify the Flagler Executive Airport for clearance to fly. Drones can only be legally flown up to 400 feet in the air and during normal operational daylight hours. The city has made sure that all of the drones are insured, registered with the FAA and will be flown safely. A Drone Code of Conduct was created in order to ensure that the drones will be used properly by city employees, and that citizen privacy will be respected.

The next steps in this program are to provide other employees with the proper training so that they can pass the required FAA Part 107 exam and officially become licensed drone pilots, allowing them to commercially fly for the city.

ric Guerrero has never owned Matanzas Pirates gear in his entire life.

Guerrero, 30, graduated from crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast High School in 2008. It was where he met his wife, Evonne. He played on the Bulldogs’ basketball team, coached girls volleyball for two seasons right after graduating and was an assistant coach on the boys basketball team for a season before joining head coach Javier Bevacqua on the Bulldogs’ girls basketball team in 2011. He had been there ever since.

But on this particular day, Guerrero slipped on a Pirates shirt for the first time. He looked at his wife. They were both in shock.

“If it didn’t feel good, it wouldn’t have worked,” said Guerrero, who was introduced on June 17 as the next head coach of Matanzas’ girls basketball team.

“But putting it on, it feels good.”

Leaving FPC was one of the toughest decisions he’s ever made.

He formed tight bonds with all of the girls on the team, many of whom he’s coached since they were fourth graders. His relationship with Bevacqua, the Bulldogs’ longtime head coach, helped mold him into the man he is today.

Bevacqua had always been in

his corner encouraging him. From Day 1, Bevacqua was grooming him to become a head coach one day.

Without that support, Guerrero said, taking the Matanzas job would have been unfathomable.

“Coach B’s a guy that would never hold anyone back, and he wants to see people succeed,” Guerrero said. “They all know I love the community, and that I’m trying to make girls basketball so much bigger in Flagler County.”

The Pirates haven’t had a solid girls basketball program since the school’s inception.

The Pirates went 0-17 under first-year head coach Monterika Warren last season. The season before that, they went 5-12 under Dan Toblin.

Guerrero believes that will change.

“I just don’t think they had someone who fought for girls basketball like we did at FPC,” he said. “That’s what I want to do

here. If the girls will see they have a coach who cares and is willing to fight for them, they’re going to produce better on the court and in life.”

He’s already feeling the support from the Matanzas High School community.

“We were looking for someone who had a passion for what they’re doing,” Pirates Athletics Director Zach Rigney said. “Not only does he have a passion for basketball, but he’s passionate about Flagler County.”

Taking the step forward into the head coaching realm was a leap of faith for Guerrero. He’s left the relative comfort and security of being an assistant. Win or lose, the pressure will be on his shoulders now.

“I think I’m ready for that commitment and that responsibility,” he said. “You need support in order to build a program up. I feel like I have that here.”

“We’ve always had a great relationship.

When you do the right thing, you usually have that support. People see when someone does a good job. Now he’s reaping the benefits of that.”

Hodgson sees his motion and immediately opens a snack for him. The other boy lets out a loud cry. While she doesn’t hear it, she sees his reaction and hurries over to him.

Hodgson has been deaf since she was born, in Vermont, but her parents didn’t find out she was deaf until she was 18 months old.

No one in her family at the time was deaf.

“It was challenging for my parents not knowing how to deal with me, but I learned to speak before learning sign language,” Hodgson said in an email. “When we moved to Michigan, my two younger siblings were born and found out they are deaf as well, so we learned sign language. My older sister and my parents can hear, as well as all my relatives do; me being deaf was a shock for them.”

Growing up, she managed to read lips when in one-on-one situations, but anything larger than that could be overwhelming.

She and her two younger siblings, who were also born deaf, communicated by using Signed Exact English, but Hodgson didn’t learn ASL or about deaf culture until high school.

Hodgson was immersed in a deaf community for the first time when she attended her last two years of high school at the Model Secondary School for The Deaf on the Gallaudet University campus, a renowned school for the deaf in Washington, D.C. She then studied for a couple of years on the main college campus but didn’t complete her degree.

“I wish I could go back in time

and finish college,” she said.

She moved to Palm Coast in 2004 and got connected at Parkview Church when a friend asked her to attend six years ago.

“Immediately, I felt like I belonged here,” Hodgson said.

She went on to say that the church staff and guests have become her second family.

“Karen is a sweet lady with a big heart,” Sylvia Shows, a pastoral assistant at Parkview, said in an email. “... She loves her own kids and has worked diligently to provide for them.”

Hodgson’s house is one filled with sign language; it was the first language her children learned.

Her oldest is deaf and autistic.

As a single mom now, she parents three teenagers.

“It has its challenges,” Hodgson said. “I still have my daily struggles, especially financially, but most importantly I make sure I have a roof for my children and me to sleep. My kids are understandable about how tight my budget can be, but I try hard to make sure I have my bills paid.”

She oversees the church’s child care department about 12 hours a week, as well as babysits for some of the church’s families and teaches ASL to homeschoolers from Parkview. She also homeschools her oldest, while her two younger children, who can hear, attend First Baptist Christian Academy.

While Hodgson said the deaf community at Parkview isn’t large, there are volunteers who interpret the 9:30 a.m. Sunday church service, as well as at special services and larger group meetings she attends.

“She loves kids and has not let her hearing loss stop her from interacting with anyone,” Shows said. “She is very outgoing and patient with people as they speak with her.”

Hodgson has spent her whole life reading lips, so she’s adapted well here, too.

“I work hard to fit in the hearing community,” she said. “I have my advantage that I’m able to speak and read lips, as well as using American Sign Language even when I cannot hear anything. ... I get through it because of my kids.”

Creative Summer Kids’ Camp at The Spot in Palm Coast. The eight kids at the camp, half of whom are boys, applied for and received full scholarships for the camp. The scholarships included all necessary supplies, as well as a sewing machine for each child to keep. The customers of Cut Up and Sew donated the money for the scholarships, as well as an embroidery machine to the teacher.

The grant will be used to develop a Career Coaching program for Flagler Schools, as a part of its Classroom to Careers program. The Career Coaching program is a mentoring program where community members will be paired up with a student in one of the 21 Classroom to Careers programs in Flagler Schools, such as Fire Leadership Flagship at Flagler Palm Coast High School and the Law and Criminal Justice Flagship at Matanzas High School. Two additional flagships are also in the works.

HANDS-ON LEARNING FOR PIRATES IN NYC

School may be out, but for 17 college students, the work doesn’t stop. The city of Palm Coast has welcomed 17 interns for the 2019 summer internship program, according to a press release.

Interns are working on special projects designed to meet the current needs within city departments and are learning and practicing skills within their field of study. The students are supervised by professionals who are guiding and mentoring them.

The paid internships are fulltime and may qualify for college credit with the student’s respective college.

This summer’s interns are: Daniel Calderon, Taylor Campo, Christopher Caschera, Sophia Clark, Samuel Colasanti, Alexandra Feldman, Anabella Giuliano, Jonathan Hale, Danevsky Joseph, Andres Lebron, Jessica Middleton, Taylor Pettine, Shawn Proctor, Erin Robinson, Jacob Roth, Brianna Valente and Rath Yoeum.

Internships at the city have previously led to full-time employment opportunities.

Safety Specialist Benjamin Caoili interned in the summer of 2018 and now works at City Hall as a full-time employee.

Twenty-four Matanzas High School students, teachers and parents headed to New York City on June 1 for a five-day trip, sponsored by teacher Noel Bethea through EF Tours Broadway and the Arts.

The Metropolitan Museum Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center provided the travelers with a context for arts. Other favorite highlights included an

up close and personal Q&A with a Broadway artist, a drama workshop in the city and seeing “Beautiful the Carole King Musical” and “King Kong.” On the last day, students were surprised with a lunch at Ellen’s StarDust Diner.

Students were inspired by the food, culture and historical places and hope to bring the spirit of the city to the stage next spring for MHS production of Disney’s “Newsies” in next April.

DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES The first of three summer Zumba block parties was held Saturday, June 15.

It was a rad night for dancing and exercise at the first evening of “Through The Decades Summer Zumba Block Party Series” at MPower Fitness.

Rad ’80s Night, the first event of three in the series, was on Saturday, June 15. The event was presented by Atmosphere ReInvented at and hosted by Crazy Sock Divas. There were six Zumba instructors, and over 50 people attended. In addition, 10 local businesses joined in on the fun, including fun 80’s hairstyles from Atmosphere ReInvented and a themed photo booth run by Welcome Home Real Estate.

“We did routines from all genres of ’80s music ­— from pop to hip hop to hair bands,” said Crazy Sock Divas President Brandi Jaeger. “We also did a fun dance off where we formed two lines and the first person of each line danced down the center together to Salt-N-Pepa’s ‘Push It’; it was a huge hit.”

TRADES OF HOPE Palm Coast woman works to end world poverty with sustainable business PAIGE WILSON COMMUNITY EDITOR

In the early 2000s, Gretchen Huijskens spent eight years in Haiti where she co-founded a nonprofit that included an orphanage, school and medical clinic.

While good was being done, she felt like a new approach to helping others was needed after the earthquake in 2010. She watched mothers abandon their children — not because they didn’t want them, but because they couldn’t feed them.

“We really wanted to get to the root of some problems,” she said.

“The root of the issue was that there were no jobs.”

In 2010, Huijskens launched a business called Trades of Hope, with Holly Wehde and their respective daughters, Elisabeth Huijskens and Chelsie Antos. The headquarters, with now over 20 employees, is in Marvin’s Garden Business Center in Bunnell.

“I fell in love with the idea of empowering mothers so they could keep their children and care for them well,” said Huijskens, a Palm Coast resident.

Trades of Hope now impacts mothers across 16 countries.

Hand-crafted jewelry, accessories and clothing are purchased from about 1,500 artisan crafters around the world, including in Haiti and India, two countries where the artisan partnerships started. Over 7,800 “compassionate entrepreneurs” across

the United States, who are mostly women, then sell the products in their own markets online and through parties.

“A lot of the countries that we work with are third- and fourthworld countries that have no marketplace,” said Chief Operation Officer Jeremy Cundiff. “They really don’t have a local economy; It’s survival by scale. So, what we do is, we give them the opportunity for consistently supplying and producing the artisanal crafts they’ve been known for for some of them centuries.”

The origin of the crafts and the story behind the women who create them are included when someone purchases the product, which creates a meaningful experience with each sale.

“That’s an important part for us — because we could just purchase things and sell things, but it’s really about creating a safe working environment for women to thrive,” Huijskens said. “So, we follow fair trade principles. And we’ve just seen lives of women completely change.”

The Trades of Hope founders and the recent product designer all travel to the artisan groups each year to see the impact it makes on these women and communities.

“We work with them out of our product development and our artisan development teams so we can help them actually develop their business and grow their business so that they can employ and sustain more women in their area as well,” Cundiff said.

Huijskens said that the artisans they buy crafts from are now not only just able to just feed and clothe their children, but that they’re able to send them to school — and some even build their family homes.

“We’ve seen women who own beds for the first time in their lives,” Huijskens said. “They’ve been able to come out of abusive situations. And we’ve seen women who were literally going to give up their child, and now they have their child, they’re living a full life and can even plan for tomorrow.”

Trades of Hope artisans are made up of about 80% women and 20% men, she said.

“It’s incredibly fulfilling,” Huijskens said. “I can only imagine what it’s like to send your kids to bed hungry every night and really have no idea what you’re going to do the next day. That is one of the most incredible gifts that we can give to other women, really our sisters around the world, are to partner with them in a way that’s healthy on their end, meaning it’s long-term, it’s sustainable, it allows them to grow and develop.”

Now, the business’ goal is to invite more women and men to become compassionate entrepreneurs, to sell the crafts from the artisans and make commission themselves.

“That’s how we can create a marketplace so that other women and can come and work, because literally there are women waiting outside gates at the artisan groups wanting jobs,” Huijskens said.
