‘We dodged a bullet’ JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

By about noon Wednesday, Flagler County’s experience of Hurricane Dorian was largely over: Evacuation orders were lifting, winds were dying down, power was back on for most and people were venturing out to the beach and the pier to look for damage.

There wasn’t much.

“At this point, I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief and be grateful that we dodged a bullet,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a statement broadcast via Facebook Live.

“The effects felt in Flagler County

by Hurricane Dorian were much less than expected, and thankfully Flagler County sustained very minor damage overall.”

Still, officials urged residents to remain prepared.

“While we may have made it through Hurricane Dorian, we’re only starting to approach the peak of hurricane season,” Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord said during a press conference at the Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday, Sept.

4. “Keep your supplies. Keep your plan in place.”

Evacuation and curfew orders lifted at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, after public work teams and utility crews removed roadway hazards and checked for downed power lines.

“We are trying to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible,” Lord said in a news release Wednesday afternoon. “We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Our residents have been wonderful through all of this, getting prepared, and then hunkering down while we waited for Dorian to reach us.”

The Flagler Beach pier was still standing, although it still needed to be assessed Wednesday for any damage before the city would reopen it, and officials were warning people away from the water because lifeguards would not be on the beach Wednesday and Thursday.

“Please, please stay out of the water,” Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney said. “Lifeguards and first responders will not be able to help you if you get in trouble.”

But even thought the storm did minimal damage, it required plenty of preparation from locals and businesses and a major mobilization from local governments, which operated from Emergency Operations Centers and were tasked with managing evacuations, curfews, sheltering, debris cleanup, and the task of keep the public informed.

Here’s a look at what they did, and what’s next.

LIGHTS COME BACK ON

About 1,700 Flagler County households lost power at some point during Hurricane Dorian, but by about 9 a.m. the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 4, that number had been reduced to about 1,100, and by the afternoon, 800 were without power.

SCHOOL RESUMES FRIDAY

Flagler County schools will reopen Friday, and suffered minimal damage from the storm.

Rymfire Elementary and Bunnell Elementary served as emergency shelters for about 400 people.

“We are grateful that the most powerful part of Hurricane Dorian remained well offshore,” Superintendent James Tager said in a news release. “I cannot say

enough how much I appreciate how unselfishly and collaboratively Flagler Schools employees and volunteers treated all of our shelter guests with dignity and respect. We will now get to work helping those who sought shelter with us get back to their homes.”

Tager added: “We are busy at coming up with a plan on how to make up the three days of instruction we missed. As soon as that has been determined, we will let our administrators, teachers, staff, and families know.”

he prevailing assessment of Hurricane Dorian on Sept. 4 was that we had been spared. That was certainly true in Palm Coast neighborhoods, but I asked Flagler County for a tour to see the area that was most vulnerable to the wind and waves: the recently rebuilt dunes.

I arrived at the Emergency Operations Center at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 4, and I was met by the county’s public information officer, Julie Murphy, who once again worked long hours behind the scenes to keep the media and the community informed during the storm. She joked that she was glad I had asked for at tour because that gave her a reason to finally leave the EOC for a few minutes.

Our driver was Richard Gordon, assistant county engineer; he has worked for Flagler County for 31 years.

In the front passenger seat was Faith Alkhatib, county engineer, the face of the dune restoration project in the county. I asked her what went through her mind when she learned that Dorian was heading our way.

“I was very worried,” she said, wearing a black ball cap and a rain jacket. She joked that she wanted to go out and protect the new dunes herself.

AN UNPRECEDENTED EFFORT

Many other coastal communities in Florida are on renourishment schedules, having sand added to the shore on a regular basis. But in the past century, very little has been done to improve the health of the dunes in Flagler County, Alkhatib said.

Then, three years ago, the dunes took a fatal hit. Hurricane Matthew gobbled them up and then

flooded a dozen streets in north Flagler County. After Matthew, the coastline was unprotected: Without a dune, any strong storm could flood the homes on those streets — it wouldn’t take another hurricane.

The county administration responded by coming up with a plan to restore the dunes. But when the bids for the project came back, they were double the expected cost. The county staff discussed it and, with the County Commission’s blessing, decided that they could move sand on their own for a fraction of the cost.

Led by Alkhatib, they made it happen, at a pace of a mile a month. In March 2019, the last of the sand loads was put in place.

It was such a success that, since then, other communities have inquired about how it was done.

The Florida Department of Transportation has also been hard at work, creating a one-mile seawall to strengthen State Road A1A. Concrete poles — 1,800 of them — were punched into the sand at alternating intervals of 18 and 36 feet deep to create a seawall, and then 85,000 tons of sand were piled on top to create dunes.

You can tell where the project was completed by the sight of neatly planted vegetation along the side of the road beginning at 18th Road North in Flagler Beach and extending north toward Beverly Beach.

That project was finished even more recently.

“Believe it or not, we sent the

final invoice to DEP last week,” Alkhatib said as we drove on the tour.

TALE OF TWO DUNES

Although the lack of a dune caused anxiety for many, not everyone was worried enough to accept the county’s help. In fact, 11 property owners declined to have a dune in front of their lots.

Alkhatib brought me to one such lot, which featured beautiful rock formations at the shoreline.

The lot was empty: No house had been built there yet. And, unlike at the neighboring lots, there was no dune here.

Alkhatib showed me a video of this very lot earlier in the day, with water rushing across it.

She had no ill will toward the property owner, but seeing that video was evidence to her that the dune project was doing its job elsewhere in the county: See what can happen without a dune?

Wherever there was a dune, she

reported, there were no breaches.

On the way back from north Flagler County, we stopped at a second dune. This one was at 18th Road North, the southern edge of FDOT’s project, with the Flagler Beach Pier in the distance to the south. And although this seawall-and-dune combo had done its job and had protected A1A, I was surprised by how much sand had been carved out by Dorian.

With Alkhatib’s permission (normally, of course, we “Dodge the Dunes”), I walked up the dune and was faced with a 10-foot drop to the beach below. Before Dorian, she said, this had sloped about 20 feet farther out.

Would they be adding more sand to replace what was lost?

She didn’t think FDOT would be adding more sand. Rather, the remaining sand would be reshaped.

It was sobering to think what one storm can do, even with a dune to block the waves.

The FDOT project cost a staggering $40 million. The next phase, which is currently being designed and will begin next spring, will cost another staggering $35 million, as the remaining 5.6 miles south to the Volusia County line are strengthened.

Fortunately, the vast majority of that $75 million is paid for with federal and state grants. And 2.6 miles of the remaining 5.6 will be done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

But the tour made it clear that this is not the end but only the beginning of the conversation about what we are willing to do — and pay — to protect our roads and beaches in the long term.

OCEAN VIEWS Will the renourished dunes in the southern 5.6 miles of Flagler County block the views of the ocean from A1A? When I asked County Engineer Faith Alkhatib that question, she laughed nervously, knowing it was a sensitive question for many residents.

She said, “I hope not.”

s Dorian did its worst on Flagler County — much less than had been feared — on Wednesday morning, locals captured photos and witnessed the strength of the waves that lashed the Flagler Pier.

Bill Egan, who lives in Flagler Beach, said Irma dumped 2 feet of water into his home. To prepare for Dorian, he added sealing foam to his doors’ gaps to avoid flooding.

The Flagler Beach Fire Department crew was also by the pier. Capt. Stephen Cox said they have been fully staffed and ready since Sunday to respond to any scenario.

Randy Schmiemeier and his wife, Robin Swain, moved to Palm Coast a year ago. “This was our first hurricane experience, and we were ready,” they said.

Stocking Publix before Dorian Stocking shelves as Hurricane Dorian’s approach sent Publix into overdrive

Everyone was coming for the water bottles, as if Hurricane Dorian isn’t bringing enough water for everybody.

I work at Publix as a shelfstocker, and I also happen to be a new staff writer at the Palm Coast Observer, so my editor talked me into writing about my experience pre-hurricane.

You might have thought Dorian had already flattened the beaches and salted the Intracoastal, the way customers swarmed Belle Terre Crossings — like so many people dog-paddling away from a shipwreck. My coworker Kyle was pacing the front of the store, in front of the man-high stacks of Publix water bottles in packs of 24.

cases, he told me. He had been put in charge of enforcing the limit on gallons of water.

If any such limit had been placed on the other pre-storm scramble necessities — soup, beans, bread, milk, batteries, fish, ice — I couldn’t tell, because they flew off the shelves so quickly we may as well have punted them over the aisles directly to the checkout lanes.

The ordinary rhythms of retail life were thrown into chaos by Dorian’s whirl across the Atlantic to our doorstep, along with those of Floridian life generally.

Orderliness became an impossibility, speed a joke. Shelf organization was a settled matter: empty shelves are pristine. We were instructed to “touch up” the perimeter of the aisles as a desperate nod to our normal aesthetic-minded processes, but no more.

The usual questions were swiftly answered: “Where can I find the peanut butter?”

Aisle 17, if you’re fast.

“Can you check if you have more of this in the back?”

We don’t.

“Is there any more wa—” Nope, should’ve come before 5.

Everyone available to work was doing so, until one coworker quit halfway through his shift, leaving for lunch never to return.

Nothing could be completed, as anything that did not disappear as soon as it left our hands wasn’t worth worrying about, but the necessities and the sale items were mostly gone before sundown. We were left to scurry about on our own, most managers having left or being too busy in their respective departments to marshal the restless grocery department toward any one task.

The arrival of trucks carrying milk and an emergency shipment of towering pallets of ice, stacked up until the freezer became a small glacier in its own right, broke the monotony of the night, until we dragged the few remaining pallets of sale out of the barren backroom and emptied them onto the shelves around 8, before the store was even closed.

The customers didn’t care; there was a Category 4 worry occupying their minds’ radars.

We were allowed to leave, mercifully, at 11 p.m., the scheduled end of our shifts, for lack of anything to do that the night crew wouldn’t be around to take care of.

I was back with them every day until Monday, the predicted Landfall Day, one of a few greenshirted beavers dragging the logs into place as the river rises up around our dam.

Every clerk for himself, and Dorian take the hindmost.

Local businesses prepare for Hurricane Dorian Business owners in Palm Coast, Flagler Beach consider how to cope with the coming storm.

Joe’s NY Pizza & Pasta, one of many local businesses preparing for the worst from Hurricane Dorian, was dark Monday afternoon, but co-owner Michael Bennici and employee Justin Donato were inside, cleaning.

They had been considering opening up the restaurant for a half-day, but the hurricane’s slow, unpredictable churn toward the Atlantic Coast had left them unsure of how to proceed.

Their outdoor tables and chairs were piled up inside by the front entrance.

“Last Friday,” Bennici said, “we started closing up for today.”

Closing up for a Monday evening landfall which never arrived.

Once it was predicted that Dorian wouldn’t make landfall at all, or even affect Palm Coast until Tuesday or Wednesday, Bennici began considering a limited Tuesday opening, and wanted the kitchen to be ready just in case.

While news about the approaching storm made business sporadic since last week, he said, it would pay to be open soon after Dorian passed.

“After the last hurricane,” Bennici said, “us and Taco Bell were the only two places open around here. There was a line from here to the oil change place.”

All around Palm Coast, other restaurants and stores were closed, some even boarded up.

The Sprint store in the same plaza as Joe’s, however, was making its big money pre-Dorian.

“Afraid to lose power?” a sign on the door asked. “No problem!!!!!!”

The solution: battery packs.

Inside, where employees were wrapping their computers in trash bags — to prevent electrocutions, should someone attempt to reenter the store after it’s potentially flooded — the racks were emptying of the 8,000 milliamp packs, about three full phone charges each.

At Flagler Beach, where dozens of residents and visitors from Palm Coast lined the sides of the roads to watch the water churn high and gray, the threat of Hurricane Dorian’s destruction was tangible, airborne.

Oceanside Beach Bar & Grill was closed, the stretch of A1A in front of it dug out to provide drainage for the storm surge, and owners Johnny and Tony Lulgjuraj had shuttered up the doors and windows.

Johnny Lulgjuraj said he was more worried about the storm’s aftermath; about the power going out and people not having anything to eat. Within the barricaded bar and grill, he said, their chef and a dozen other employees had been preparing food to be heated up and eaten later, when served to locals, National Guard members and residents of the barrier islands. A refrigerator truck was contracted to come as soon as possible, once the winds dropped.

This service to the community is of a piece with the efforts of Flagler Strong, a group of residents who have been banding together to help prepare for and clean up after Flagler Beach’s hurricanes, notably in the wake of Hurricane Irma. The volun-

teers have been headquartered at Tortugas Florida Kitchen & Bar, where several of the roughly 60 in the group lingered after their last day of preparing fellow residents for Dorian’s knock at their doors.

“We’ve been closed for two days,” said Scott Fox, owner of Tortugas. By the time the hurricane has blown over, he said, they will have lost as much as $90,000 in potential revenue, Labor Day weekend normally being one of their most profitable.

But the time spent boarding

was busy inside. Being one of the only open places in Flagler Beach was smart for business, but had them working double-time. They even planned to be open Tuesday, until 3 or 4 p.m. Then they would board up the rest of their eastfacing windows.

“I’m not too worried about the building,” Behling said. “At most, we’ll lose a couple of roof tiles.”

The TVs in the bar were tuned to Channel 9, showing the coverage being shot just outside. The live band had finished its set, so one could hear the classic rock station piping in Neil Young’s “Like a Hurricane.”

up windows, filling thousands of sandbags and evacuating about 30 senior citizens that week, according to Paul Chestnut, operating partner of Tortugas, was worth it.

“The community is more important than just oneself,” he said.

There were other volunteers wearing black #FlaglerStrong T-shirts in Finn’s Beachside Pub, a few minutes down the road, but the bar was not closed. Patrons were clustered on the front steps where other restaurants had sandbags, calling to the news crews from channels 6 and 9 filming in front of the beach.

Wanted fugitives arrested in stolen car in Palm Coast The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a Black Lexus SUV on U.S. 1 near Whiteview Parkway due to a headlight being out. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Communications Center notified deputies that the temporary Georgia tag on the vehicle showed the that vehicle was stolen.

The vehicle increased in speed and failed to stop for deputies during the traffic stop. A short time later, a deputy on U.S. 1 near Matanzas Woods Parkway spotted the vehicle. Stop sticks were authorized to attempt to deflate the vehicle’s tires and were successful in puncturing the two right-side tires.

The vehicle then turned onto Laramie Drive and ultimately stopped on Lancelot Drive. The driver, later identified as Dashawn Montrel Burrell-Ghee, fled from the vehicle but was taken into custody about 50 feet away.

who remained in the vehicle awaiting commands from law enforcement. One passenger was identified as Joseph Sencindiver, who had active warrants. The other passenger was released.

The vehicle and male passenger fit the description of a suspect that stole cartons of cigarettes from the Boulder Rock Shell convenience store on Aug. 27. Sencindiver confessed to the incident.

“A routine traffic stop resulted in two fugitives being taken into custody, a stolen car recovery, and solving a previous shoplifting incident,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Deputies did a great job of showing restraint and using the tools available to them to safely take these suspects into custody.”

Burrell-Ghee was charged with grand theft auto, among other charges. Sencindiver had an out-of-county warrant for child support and shoplifting.

Both defendants were booking into the Flagler County Jail where they are being held without bond.

L E T T E RS Prayer doesn’t fit at School Board meetings Dear Editor: While it is great that that Flagler County School Board members “will discuss during a workshop whether to continue such an [invocation] practice in the future,” it remains clear that invocations at school board meetings are unconstitutional.

Courts have heard cases related to School Board prayers many times. In Coles ex rel.

Coles v. Cleveland Bd. of Educ., 171 F.3d 369 (6th Cir. 1999), the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals found invocations at school board meetings unconstitutional and even moments of silence unconstitutional as the practice “violates the Establishment Clause [of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution] because it sends a message of government endorsement of religion.”

In Doe v. Indian River Sch. Dist., 653 F.3d 256 (3d Cir. 2011), the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit noted that it “is

neither sacrilegious nor antireligious to say that each separate government in this country should stay out of the business of writing or sanctioning official prayers and leave that purely religious function to the people themselves.”

In Freedom from Religion Found., Inc. v. Chino Valley Indep. Sch. Dist. Bd. of Educ., 896 F.3d 1132 (9th Cir. 2018) the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit noted that previous court action was “appropriate, because it merely prohibits governmental action that violates the Constitution and does not infringe upon constitutional rights.”

I am a clergyman and am quick to note that prayer is important. We must all be quick to note that invocations at School Board meetings are divisive and let non-religious and in many cases, non-Christian students in our schools — not to mention taxpaying citizens of our county — know that they really do not fully belong. This is not the message our Flagler

County School Board should be sending.

Palm Coast’s canals were lowered before Hurricane Dorian arrived, and the city’s water and sewer services functioned normally after the storm and remained below normal levels Wednesday afternoon, according to the city.

After the storm, firefighters coordinated with FPL to handle calls about downed power lines.

“Our preparation for this storm was top-notch,” Fire Chief Jerry Forte said in a news release. “In an event like this, every single city employee is essential personnel and they did their part to ensure this city can get back on its feet as quickly as possible. We prepared for the worst and are glad that the worst never happened.”

The city began damage assessments on Thursday morning, Sept. 5, and reopened its offices and facilities, with the exception of parks and recreational facilities.

Garbage pickup resumed on Thursday. A special yard debris pickup will be held Saturday, Sept. 7.

After Dorian passed on Wednesday, firefighters, along with Mayor Milissa Holland and City Manager Matt Morton, visited nearly 100 assisted living facilities to conduct welfare checks and provide any needed assistance.

Flagler County government offices reopened Thursday, Sept.

5, as did the Flagler County Public Library, according to a county government news release.

The Florida Department of Health in Flagler County also reopened Thursday.

It had closed on Aug. 30 so its staff could assist with the special needs shelter at Rymfire Elementary School, where the Health Department helped 120 special needs individuals and 48 caregivers, with help from 50 staff members and more than three dozen volunteers, including contracted nurses and two teams from the International Medical Corps, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County.

Garbage collection in the unincorporated areas returned to normal service on Thursday.

Yard waste that would ordinarily have been collected Wednesday will be collected on Saturday, Sept. 7, since Wednesday’s collection was skipped.

By Friday evening, Aug. 30, major supermarkets and gas stations were cleaned out of water, and people were concerned about getting it before the storm hit. But within a couple of days, the stores were fully stocked again.

Hurricane Dorian has been unusual for its slow progress, which caused a long weekend of

anticipation — and preparation.

Local governments had time to create strategies and provide resources, personnel and shelters to keep the community safe.

Locals had extra time to stock up on supplies and pick up anything they missed during the initial rush on the stores.

Ice cream parlors serve sweetness before storm Two businesses found community support in preparing for losses from Hurricane Dorian.

When the weather maps showed Hurricane Dorian making its tightrope walk along the Atlantic coast toward Flagler County, did you stop to think about ice cream?

John Maldonado of Purdees Tropical Flavored Ice and Mike and Holly Wehde of the Waffle Cone had to, because every delicious tub that could have melted if Dorian took out their electricity would have been a tub of cash blown away by the palm-bending winds.

The proprietors of both shops landed on similar pre-storm solutions.

Purdees, on 1070 Palm Coast Parkway Northwest, gave away its sweets — soft-serve ice cream, Dole whip, Italian ices — for $5 per customer from last Friday through Saturday, Aug. 30-31.

The Waffle Cone, closer to the danger of the storm surge at 102 South Fourth St., Flagler Beach, sold its ice cream for 50% off Sunday through Monday, Sept.

He decided early Friday afternoon to do his $5 deal (provided customers ate in the store) and announce it on social media.

“We had been open all week” after the hurricane’s Floridian trajectory was announced, Maldonado said, “and saw business crawl to a standstill.” But the sale saw Purdees have two steadily busy days.

At the Waffle Cone, the Wehdes also thought of their sale salvation at the last second.

“Are you kidding me?” was their shared thought as Dorian bore down on their fledgling

business. Having only owned the Cone for two months, they had let their employees leave to evacuate and were prepared to count over 100 tubs of ice cream as a loss when they caught the attention of the Channel 9 News crew filming the beach.

The news broadcast of their mission to “save the ice cream” helped, but Holly Wehde says it was just as much their widelyshared Facebook announcement, snowballing across the local web, which led to Monday night’s flood of cream-seekers.

No sooner had the last of their employees left on Monday than

customers started flooding in.

One patron, Natasha Glover, jumped over the counter to offer a scooping hand.

By the time the Wehdes closed on Tuesday to make their own home preparations, over 100 customers had helped them reduce over 100 tubs of ice cream to 20.

“It made a beautiful day out of what we expected to be an awful day,” she said. “It was the people in this community coming together to show us love and support.”

Both Purdees and the Waffle Cone will try to reflect the support shown by their communities.

“We did love the response,” Maldonado said, “love the fact that families came out.”

While he only did the sale because he lacked generators to keep his freezers running, and hopes to have the means to do so for future storms, Maldonado says such all-you-can-eat sales may happen again.

“We appreciated the community’s support, so it was something we discussed doing periodically, as a thank you,” he said.

“It was super sweet that so many people came out,” Wehde said of the Waffle Cone’s success.

The Wehdes have ordered more ice cream, and 10% of their proceeds from now through Sunday, Sept. 8, will go to disaster relief for the Bahamas.

Both Purdees and the Waffle Cone were scheduled to reopen Thursday, Sept. 5.

Matanzas gave up three rushing touchdowns in the second half.

he Pirates scored on a long touchdown run, nailed a 49-yard field goal, sacked the quarterback three times and forced four turnovers in the opening half of their game against Seabreeze on the night of Friday, Aug. 30, at Daytona Stadium.

Matanzas led 10-6 at halftime.

“We had energy,” said Joel Whittick, who recorded two interceptions against the Sandcrabs. “We had everything.”

The Pirates tacked on a touchdown — an 11-yard reception by receiver Noah Cundiff — with nearly 30 seconds to play in the game and were successful on the 2-point conversion attempt.

However, the Sandcrabs recovered the Pirates’ onside kick attempt.

“We need to have heart,” said Matanzas’ Rex Robich, who was responsible for the Pirates’ three sacks in the first half. “We need to find that thing that keeps us going through the end of games.”

The Pirates fell to 0-2 with the loss, and will travel to Middleburg at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6.

“We’re not good,” Pirates coach Don Mathews said after the game. “We don’t play good. We don’t coach good.

We’re just not very good.”

Flagler Palm Coast has gotten off to a fast start to the 2019 season, following up its win over crosstown rival Matanzas in Week 1 with a 53-22 drubbing of Clay on the night of Friday, Aug. 30, at FPC High School.

Bulldogs quarterback Donovan Montoyo threw for a touchdown and rushed for two scores, and running back Marc Genis rushed for three touchdowns.

Future Division I running back Ty Jenkins, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury the past three weeks, made his first appearance of the season and scored on the Bulldogs’ opening drive.

“We just want to make sure we’re fully healthy before we get to our district games,” Bulldogs coach Travis Roland said. “It’s good to see him get back out there

The thing Roland was most proud of on offense, however, was with the offensive line play and lack of penalties.

t age 10, Angelo McGovern was rushed to the hospital with his mom.

“I was scared at first because I didn’t know what was going on,” he recalled.

“He was drinking water like crazy,” Amanda McGovern, his mother, recalled.

“And I had to go to the bathroom a lot,” Angelo added.

Angelo was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on Dec. 18, 2018.

His blood sugar level was at 460 that day.

“He is not really a complainer,” Amanda said about her oldest son.

“It was just one of those things where I was just like, ‘All right, it’s 8 a.m. and we’re down four water bottles.’ … It was just one of those times where I just went with my gut; something’s off.”

The McGovern family spent the next few months constantly alert.

Three to four times every single night, Amanda or Jimmy McGovern (Angelo’s father) would get up and do a finger prick test on him to make sure his levels weren’t dropping too fast.

“It was sad at first, but then we’re just the kind of people who were just going to take it on,” Amanda McGovern said. “My biggest thing was, ‘I’m not going to let diabetes run us. We’re going to run diabetes.’ We’re just going to keep going.”

She said that Angelo’s been a real champ through the process. He’s even referred to as “mini Dad” around their Palm Coast home because he’s been so responsible with monitoring his glucose.

“I adjusted once I figured out how everything works and how insulin works and how to take my

blood sugar and stuff like that,” said Angelo, who’s now 11 years old.

Three months after the diagnosis, Angelo started using a Dexcom G6, a continuous glucose monitoring device, after his doctor asked if it’s something the family would consider getting.

“It was a big game-changer for us as parents because I don’t think we slept those first two months because of the unknown — how fast it could drop,” Amanda said.

“You learn. I feel like I know him so much now. Obviously, diabetes is unpredictable, but I know him where I’ll know that if he goes to bed at a certain level, he’s probably going to hold.”

The Dexcom has helped ensure Angelo can still play on the Upward Basketball team in Palm Coast without having to constantly do finger prick tests, as the device reads his glucose levels through a sensor and transmits the results through an app.

Amanda McGovern said this way, Mom, Dad, grandparents and more can always know his levels.

While Angelo has been homeschooled for the last few years, he still participates in extracurricular activities at Belle Terre Elementa r y Sc h o o l .

He recently got a book published that he wrote and illustrated himself through his homeschool class: “Angelo’s Diabetes Story.”

“What inspired me to write the book is that I was really scared at first when I first got diagnosed with diabetes,” Angelo said. “I wrote the book to kind of say it’s not that scary

once you figure it out. The shots and stuff can be scary at first, but then you get used to them.”

They took a copy of the book to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville where he was diagnosed.

He said he hopes other kids going through what he is can read it and be inspired.

“A n ge l o ’s got a lot of will power,” Jimmy McGovern said.

“He won’t let something dictate who he is. So, he wants to overcome everything.”

Angelo McGovern hopes that other kids who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes will get to read his book and be inspired to be brave.

Mabel Dunbar is turning 105 (with or without Hurricane Dorian) PAOLA RODRIGUEZ STAFF WRITER

Mabel Dunbar started her 105th birthday celebration with a banana split with strawberry ice cream, sprinkles, nuts, whipped cream, and caramel fudge with about 38 other friends at the George Wickline Senior Center in Flagler Beach on Aug. 30.

Dave Dawley, her friend and Flagler County bus driver for two years, describes her as “a beautiful energetic and humble person that loves the Lord.”

Her secret? Walking with the Lord, she says. “It enhances my life every day.”

Her routine? “Spending time with God because you will need him, and he will be there for you.”

She said this in a soft voice while holding my hand.

Later that day, she was scheduled for a lunch with more friends, family time while Hurricane Dorian makes landfall, and a flight to New York on Wednesday for another birthday celebration with her grandchildren. Her birthday is Sept. 5.

Lea has been both a builder and a developer. Over the years, he says he has owned upward of 50 different homes, so he’s used to going through the buying process.

I was interested to know what made him buy now, deciding to build his next home in American Village.

Lea said he has reached a point in life where he and his wife wanted to slow down, have less to take care of, but they realized

that the decision would mean a lower income as well. So, his goal was to find a new, smaller, affordable home, but he did not want to compromise on features and quality of construction.

He decided to check out American Village. When he drove through the community and saw the quality of the infrastructure, he recognized that “the developer knew what he was doing.” He then learned that Luis Medeiros was the builder. He had gotten to know Medeiros over the years and respected his quality of construction and attention to detail.

Medeiros’ background as a custom builder was also key. He could easily modify standard plans to meet Lea’s wishes. Lea’s wife wanted a larger kitchen island than was in the standard plan.

Medeiros took care of it. He was also surprised to find many features, such as Samsung appliances, were “included” rather than upgrades.

erties are vacant lots in the canal section of Palm Coast. He might have built there, but Lea wanted a gated community. Other properties are in Grand Haven, where home sizes and upkeep costs are greater. Centrally located American Village satisfied his desire to be near public amenities, dining, shopping and Interstate 95.

As a builder/developer, Lea understood that being an early buyer in a new community, he would have to accept that construction would be going on in the neighborhood for a while. On the plus side, however, Lea got exactly the lot he wanted and a few bonus items for his new home. “Everyone was very accommodating.”

Given his list of criteria, Lea says American Village “checked all the boxes.”
