Construction has begun on the U.S. 1 at Matanzas Woods Parkway roundabout, and the first detour is in effect. The first phase of construction requires the closure of Matanzas Woods Parkway at U.S. 1 for an estimate of four months. The inside lanes of U.S. 1 are also closed, reducing traffic to one

outside lane in each direction on U.S. 1.

The work is part of a Florida Department of Transportation project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Matanzas Woods Parkway. Other improvements

Mayor Milissa Holland’s daughter, Tori, has received a liver transplant after more than six years of struggling with a severe illness. Complications with the transplant, however, have resulted in her remaining unconscious and under the care of a transplant team in Miami. The mayor’s prolonged absence from City Council meetings and other events has been due to her daughter’s stay in a Miami hospital.

“We’ve got a long road ahead of us,” Holland said, “but Tori is a fighter, she’s an extraordinary young woman.

I feel very grateful to be in the position we’re in today.”

Rep. Tom Leek files legislation to prevent sex offenders from going free while they’re appealing their convictions pending their appeals.

ark Fugler is supposed to spend 15 years in prison. He was charged with exposing himself to a young girl and showing her pornographic videos. He was tried, convicted, sentenced. And then, just a month later, a judge let him out — on bail, while he filed an appeal.

The decision generated outrage and opposition from the victim’s family and from community members, including Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who wrote to the circuit’s Chief Judge Raul Zambrano to ask him to overturn Senior Judge Michael Hutcheson’s decision to allow bail for Fugler, an Ormond Beach resident and former Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor.

Zambrano couldn’t do that: The law doesn’t allow it. But soon, the law might not allow someone like Fugler to be released to begin with: Florida Rep. Tom Leek, whose district includes part of Volusia County, has filed legislation in the house to close the legal loophole that allowed Hutcheson to grant Fugler’s request for a release on bail.

“We already have in place a list of offenses for which you cannot get released on appeal after conviction,” Leek said. “So that already exists, and on the list of offenses would be other violent crimes … and things that are not violent,” including certain drugrelated offenses — but not lewd and lascivious exhibition to a minor or displaying obscene material to a minor, neither of which are first-degree felonies.

“The type of offense that Mark Fugler committed should be on there,” Leek said.

Chitwood voiced support for the proposed bill.

With Fugler, Chitwood said, “Here’s a guy who was sentenced unanimously by a jury of his

peers — they even made the little girl get up there on the stand to testify — and the mother is shopping in the Publix, and who’s in the next checkout line?”

It was only luck, Chitwood added, that the mother had not had her daughter with her at the time.

Chitwood has seen other instances of people being released on bail pending an appeal, but none for cases so serious.

“Fugler is a first for me,” he said.

“I’ve seen it happen on credit card fraud ... embezzlement cases; I’ve never seen it happen on a case as egregious as this, where a little girl’s innocence was stolen.”

THE LAW

Not all states allow bail after conviction, while a prisoner is filing their appeal, and of those that do, the nature of the offense that are bailable varies.

Connecticut allows it, but specifies a number of scenarios in which it can not apply, including “any offense involving the use, attempted use or threatened use of physical force against another person.”

Louisiana allows it for offenses where the sentence would be five years or less, and adds that it can also be imposed in cases in which the actual sentence ends up exceeding five years, “except when the court has reason to believe, based on competent evidence, that the release of the person convicted will pose a danger to any other person or the community, or that there is a substantial risk that the person convicted might flee.”

In Texas, bail is not allowed for defendants convicted of felonies where the punishment is equal to or greater than 10 years of confinement.

THE BILL

Leek’s bill is narrowly tailored to the kind of situation that occurred in the Fugler case.

It adds to the existing statutory language, specifying that,

in addition to the existing instances in which a person may not be released on bail after an adjudication of guilt, a person may not be released for a posttrial motion or appeal for “Any other offense requiring sexual offender registration under s.

943.0435(1)(h) or sexual predator registration under s. 775.21(4), when at the time of the offense, the offender was 18 years of age or older and the victim was a minor.”

Might there be other cases, not involving minors, that should also be added?

“It was hard for me to say that these other offenses don’t warrant the same type of treatment, and we can go back and add those things at a later date,” Leek said. “But what I know right now is what’s in front of me. ... There is just something fundamentally wrong with releasing a convicted sex offender into a neighborhood where he found his victim a little over a mile away.”

Shortly after hearing about Hutcheson’s release through the news, Leek had started hearing from constituents who objected, he said.

“I started to get phone calls from some folks saying, ‘This doesn’t seem right; is there something that you can do about it?’” Leek said.

He also met with the victim’s family.

“It just became evident that this is a hole in the statute that we can fix relatively easily … to make sure someone who’s been convicted of a sex offense

isn’t released into the neighborhood, he said.

He added that the current language of the bill is a starting point, and may change as he seeks out the thoughts of prosecutors, attorneys and victims.

“We will take all that information in,” he said, so that the wording of the proposed law will be appropriate, Leek said.

Florida Sen. Tom Wright, whose district includes part of Volusia County and part of Brevard County, is filing a companion bill in the Senate, Leek said.

BALANCING ACT

In Flagler County, Sheriff Rick Staly said he’d backed Chitwood’s decision to speak out against Hutcheson’s decision to allow bail in the Fugler case.

“I would have done the same thing had it occurred in this county,” Staly said. “Sometimes you have to use the power and the influence of your office to call out perceived injustices. That appeared to be the case as I’m aware of here. ... I’m glad that the judge revoked his decision.”

He can’t remember any cases similar to the Fugler one — in which someone was convicted of a serious crime and then released pending appeal — occurring in Flagler.

But, he said, “I’ve seen some low bonds while people are pretrial that kind of raise an eyebrow. ... At least now, when they’re rearrested, they are generally held on no bond. ... And I understand there’s a balancing act. They haven’t been found guilty at that point, and there’s plenty of case law that a bond is not supposed to be punishment, and the constitution and court of law allows a person to be eligible.”

As far as releases pending an appeal, he said, “From my experience, it is rare that a conviction is overturned, although it does occasionally happen. So I personally think that people that have been convicted of a crime should immediately start serving their sentence. And if they’re going to appeal, then that appeal can be done while they’re sitting in jail.”

Rape trial begins Victor Williams, 42, admitted to statutory rape of the teen, but denied he’d drugged him.

There’s no dispute about whether Victor Williams, 42, committed statutory rape of a 16-year-old boy he’d met on the gay hookup app Grindr. He’s admitted to that.

What is in dispute — and what a Flagler County jury is tasked this week with determining — is whether Williams drugged the teen and raped him while he was unconscious, and whether he neglected to inform the teen that he was HIV positive.

If he’s found guilty of the higher charge of rape of a minor, Williams faces life in prison.

Prosecutor Melissa Clark began her opening argument to the jury Oct. 22 by highlighting the teen’s condition when his parents found him the night after. “[The mother] discovered her son, her 16-year-old son ... passed out unconscious on her front porch,” Clark said.

Later, after a “flood of memories from the night before” returned to him while he took a shower, the boy told his mother that he believed he’d been drugged and raped, Clark said.

The teen said he was on Grindr to meet men to get booze and drugs, not sex.

He’d met up with Williams previously, he said on the witness stand, to smoke weed and drink alcohol. But on those prior occasions, he said, nothing sexual had occurred. He also said he’d told Williams that he wasn’t 18.

But on this occasion, on Sept.

10, 2018, about 15 minutes after he took the Xanax, he said, “I started to feel kind of dizzy, and I came out of consciousness; I blacked out. ... I remember drinking and smoking and talking, and I just remember a black period of time.”

Twice, he awoke from his unconsciousness, and Williams was performing sex acts on him.

Williams’ defense argued to the jury that the teen had not been so intoxicated as to have lost consciousness and blacked out, as he’d claimed, that he had accused Williams in order to escape his own parents’ anger with his conduct, and that he was seeking older men on the app for sex.

She highlighted the fact that he’d falsely claimed on the app to have been 18, and had resisted reporting the crime.

The boys’ mother ultimately found Williams and his phone number, and called him multiple times: A law-enforcementrecorded phone call included Williams admitting to having had sex with the teen.

“This is not a case about nonconsensual sexual activity; this is a case about a scapegoat,” said Regina Nunnally, a public defender who is representing Williams.

“Mr.Williams is the scapegoat.”

Nunnally said the defense would be calling a witness, a doctor, who would testify that it would not have been possible for the teen to have blacked out in the time frame he’d claimed based on the drugs he’d taken.

The trial is expected to conclude on Friday.

A space study conducted for the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office by the Center for Public Safety recommends more than $30.4 million in construction for an FCSO facility — more than the county is prepared to spend. The county hopes to scale back those proposals.

“It is a study that projects out for 25-year growth; it exceeds what we believe was our capability, but we are going to work to reconcile this,” County Administrator Jerry Cameron told county commissioners at an Oct. 21 County Commission meeting.

The Center for Public Safety used site visits and the results of a questionnaire circulated to the Sheriff’s command staff, plus interviews with command staff, to determine space needs, according to its cover letter to the county.

The study determined that the sheriff would need 76,765 square feet in 2020, plus another 4,828 square feet to meet additional space demands for future years, and that it would need 81,593 square feet by 2030.

The Center for Public Safety, in its 146-page report, presented the county with six options, ranging from $30.4 million to $35.6 million.

Meanwhile, Flagler County is also seeking remedies through insurance for damage to a building it had purchased for the Sheriff’s use. The structure, formerly a Sears on Palm Coast Parkway, was shown to have water intrusion and mold issues after purchase, and has been sitting vacant since county staff discovered the damage.

The county had also purchased a former bank building off Old Kings Road for use by the Sheriff’s Office, but later determined that the building was not ideal for that particular use.

“We have gone out one time to offer it on the market; we were not pleased with the offer that we got,” Cameron said. “They anticipate going out on the market again in the immediate future, in the next week or so.”

As to the Sheriff’s Operations Center on State Road 100, which has been vacant since it was evacuated in June 2018 due to mold, the county is still awaiting expert reports on its condition from private firm Terracon and from the CDC, County Attorney Al Hadeed said at the Oct. 21 meeting.

The renourishment of a 2.6-mile stretch of beach between 7th Street South and 28th Street South in Flagler Beach is slated to begin in the spring of 2020.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which will be handling the project, invited area homeowners to an Oct. 22 workshop about the future of the project. About 65 attended.

Army Corps of Engineers Project Manager Jason Harrah said the project will begin in May 2020 and end in December 2020.

The time frame was selected, he said, because the “hopper dredge” vessels that will be piping sand onto the shore from a pit about 10.25 miles offshore require moderate seas to function safely, and the winters tend to bring dangerous weather, with nor’easters.

Health Department Student arrested offers free flu after hitting shots at schools principal The Florida Department of Health in Flagler is providing free flu shots to students and staff at local schools Nov. 4-18.

Last year, the department gave flu shots to 1,240 students and teachers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting a flu vaccine every year. The vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older.

A Matanzas High School student was arrested at around 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, after engaging in a fight on campus, striking a school official and resisting an officer with violence, according to a charging affidavit released by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Matanzas Assistant Principal Amanda Kraverotis called the school resource officer requesting assistance for a fight in Building No. 6 by the culinary classroom.

When two deputies arrived, Matanzas Principal Jeff Reaves had the student against the wall.

The student struck Reaves in the face, kneed him and pushed him in an attempt to get to the other student.

The student didn’t respond to deputies’ commands to stop.

Deputies attempted to get the student to the ground, but he resisted.

After a deputy got him to the ground, the student grabbed the deputy’s hips and tried to grab the deputy’s duty belt.

The student was eventually subdued and placed in handcuffs. However, he continued to resist and tried to get away.

The student was taken to the Flagler County Jail and charged with battery on a school official and resisting an officer with violence.

The Department of Juvenile Justice will determine further placement for the student.

Jim Holland would not want $10 million wasted in his name

Why the Beachwalk development is bad for The Hammock

Dear Editor: I keep reading about the vast amount of money we are spending or maybe wasting on James F. Holland Memorial Park. From the little information available I believe it’s around $10 million and counting. I’m going to go look at it; I’m expecting huge buildings with Corinthian columns, marble statues, fountains with exotic fish swimming in them and green Bermuda grass that would put Augusta National to shame. I went; to say I was disappointed would be the understatement of the decade.

If we paid over $2 million for the whole kit and caboodle, we was robbed! I’m not saying that someone in Palm Coast got kickbacks, but I am saying I hope someone got some of the money; I hate to think all this money left town.

Looking at this park, I told myself, Boy, you were in the wrong business; you should have been designing and building parks.

I have lived here for over 32 years, and I knew Jim Holland; he was a good man and a smart man, and if he could see what we have wasted $10 million on, he would make us remove his good name from this example of local government waste!

On the plus side, the restrooms in the park were clean.

Dear Editor: A Jacksonville-based developer made a veiled threat of legal action vs. Flagler County unless a zoning variance was granted to build a 50-home Beachwalk development in The Hammock community.

The Jacksonville developer front man, Ken Atlee, said to the County Commission, “We gave up on many requested changes to work with the community in good faith.”

I say, “Bull dung.”

Now without much of a difference in the proposal, three of the county commissioners reversed their No vote to a Yes vote six months later, and a 50-home development has been approved on 12.44 acres of land.

I, Bob Jones, am seeking the District 5 seat on the Republican primary date of Aug. 18, 2020, vs. Donald O’Brien, a first-term incumbent. His change of mind gave the developer the third vote that was needed to make big money for the Jacksonville developer, and, in effect, tells the local Hammock Community Association members to drop dead.

His third vote to change from No to Yes has told the members of HCA who came out on Sept. 16 in force to tell their elected leaders that they were opposed to the 50 new homes crowded on only 12.44 acres.

The only good thing about having 50 new homes on less than 13 acres is that the new

But what was missing in the reporting was any mention of the matter that I have previously, and at this meeting, addressed in the two threeminute segments allotted for public participation: the issue of the faulty permit application that a contractor completes before being issued a permit to begin a job.

Since no verification is required of the contractor to legitimize the value of the job he is to do for the homeowner, he can insert any amount that he wants for his benefit, thus defrauding the city of proper fees and causing great harm to the homeowner. So if the job will pay him $23,500 and he states the value to be $2,200, it is easy to see that the city is losing out on revenue, and the homeowner never receives the proper oversight.

Further, because no backup information is required, the contractor is able to minimize how extensive the job actually is. Therefore, if the job is to restore a severely damaged upper deck that took six weeks to reconstruct and the description says merely that it was to “repair an existing beam,” how can the permitting department properly protect the interests of the homeowner?

The permitting department seems content to be aiding and abetting. The power of the press must prevail.

A furniture assembly company that had planned to build a 250,000-square-foot facility on U.S. 1 — creating an estimated 50 jobs with an average salary of $51,000 per year — will not be coming to Flagler County after all.

“It was a total timing issue: We needed everything to happen in succession,” said Discovery World Furniture CEO Anthony Lupo. “I really wanted to get it done. We told all of our employees we were moving.”

The County Commission had unanimously approved a 10-year, $680,000 performance-based incentive package for the company to move to Flagler. For now, the company will remain where it is and will not relocate, Lupo said.

A central issue was that the parcel of land under consideration didn’t have water and sewer: It would have required a connection to the city of Ormond Beach, requiring the city’s approval.

Meanwhile, Discovery World Furniture had a tight construction deadline. Lupo had hoped to start construction by the end of the year, so work would be done before the rainy season. When Ormond delayed a decision on the extension of utilities to the parcel, that threw off the timeline, Lupo said.

“The last time they had a vote, they voted to agree to continue to talk about it, and that’s when I said, ‘I’m out,’” Lupo said.

“We couldn’t turn it around quick enough, and I didn’t have any sense that Ormond Beach was going to be cooperative.”

Unable to determine when the move to the new facility might take place, the company also found it difficult to sell its current facility, as potential buyers couldn’t be told when it would be vacated.

But Lupo was complimentary about Flagler County’s handling of the process.

“Flagler County ... did everything in their power to get us to do this,” he said. “I would give Flagler County five stars from stem to stern. The Economic Development committee, the Building Department, the Fire Department — just every single person that I talked to; the County Commissioner … [Joe] Mullins, he really tried to help me.”

Lupo said he did not rule out the possibility that the company could consider a relocation to Flagler County at some future time. Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Helga van Eckert said he had told her he’d consider Flagler County if the company does indeed relocate in the future.

“It’s disappointing that the project didn’t turn out to be viable for the company to locate to the county,” van Eckert said. “We have a great relationship with the owners of the company, and as they continue to grow and when they are ready to expand, we are hopeful that they will come back to speak to us. ... It’s a great company, and it would be wonderful if they were to eventually expand in our county.”

Three firefighters win Kiwanis award Three local firefighters have been honored by the FlaglerPalm Coast Kiwanis Club as its Firefighters of the Year for 2019.

The Palm Coast Fire Department award recipient is DriverEngineer Patrick Juliano; the Flagler County Fire Rescue recipient is Lieutenant Armando Castaneda; and the city of Flagler Beach recipient is Firefighter/EMT Jamal Prince.

“Driver-Engineer Juliano works closely with our fire department command staff and our city communications and marketing division in assuring high-quality information is shared with our community,” said Fire Captain Tom Ascone.

Castaneda was also awarded a Fire Safety Commendation Medal from the local Sons of the American Revolution two days after receiving the Kiwanis award.

“Lt. Castaneda is very deserving of both of these honors,” Deputy Fire Chief Joe King said.

Prince has served for about a year and a half and has already earned aerial operator and driverengineer certifications.

“His work ethic, his attitude in this department — it was a unanimous vote by the officers to select him,” Captain Bobby Pace said.

“The lieutenant raves about his performance.”

‘Domestic violence knows no boundaries’ Flagler Sheriff hosts domestic violence summit RAY BOONE SPORTS EDITOR

When Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly deals with domestic violence calls, one particular case comes to mind — it’s one he won’t ever forget.

While serving in Orange County in the mid-1980s, Staly and his deputies, after receiving a 911 call, arrived at the home of a man who had allegedly been beating his wife over a period of 48 hours.

The suspect, who was a defense attorney, would not let law enforcement into his home to confirm if his wife was OK. Eventually, he permitted her to come to the door.

What Staly saw shocked him.

“She was the most physically abused person I had ever seen in my career who was still alive,” Staly recalled. “That’s how bad she was beat up.”

Deputies were able to arrest the man after he was caught driving while intoxicated shortly after. He

was taken to court. Law enforcement had no evidence of the woman’s injuries, and she testified that her husband did not abuse her.

The jury came back with a notguilty verdict.

“That case has always stayed with me,” Staly said. “I can still see her face today.”

“I think that’s a great trend,” he said. “I’m hoping that that continues.”

“This is an ongoing issue in our county,” Family Life Center CEO Trish Giaccone said.

County tourist office fires director, charts new path The county hopes to focus more on arts and leisure events and less on large-scale sporting events.

Flagler County is shifting its tourist development strategy away from big sporting events and toward more leisure-based events.

The shift in focus coincides with the county’s Oct. 18 firing of former tourist development director Matt Dunn, who had been on paid administrative leave since April 4 as the FDLE investigates financial irregularities.

The county has stated that Dunn was not fired for the alleged misconduct, but because his skills are incompatible with the Tour-

“It’s a much bigger focus on leisure and community events, and the sports part of it is going to be items that we already have the infrastructure for, and we don’t have to go out and create things for it,” County Administrator Jerry Cameron said.

The draft strategic plan lists “dreams for the future” that include the development of an arts district, a signature event and additional festivals, and more evening entertainment options.

Other objectives, it states, include a potential visitor center and increasing exposure for ecotourism magnets.

Cameron said he would recommend that Amy Lukasik, who has directed the Tourist Office as an interim director in Dunn’s absence, be promoted to the position of director. Cameron has the authority to make recommendations for director-level positions, but the Board of County Commissioners will have to ratify the selection.

“Amy has done a really good job of bringing in a consultant, and they’ve put together what I believe is a great new strategic plan,” Cameron said. “She’s done a fantastic job in the interim, and it wasn’t easy; she’s been working one staff member short.”

As for Dunn, Cameron stated in a county news release, “The termination was based solely on a review of his skill set, and the operational activities of the office under his direction. He is not ideally suited for the new direction of the Tourism Development Office.”

“I think it is on the right track,” he added. “We’ve got a balanced focus now, and we should be able to attract people to spend time in Flagler County and also have events that would have great appeal to our local community.”

A man was flown to Halifax Health the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 21, after he crashed his car into the tree line off I-95 near exit 293 in Palm Coast.

FireFlight, the Flagler County Fire Department’s helicopter, landed on the northbound lanes just south of the off-ramp at exit 293 at about 4:50 p.m. and took off with the patient, who was alert, at about 5:15 p.m.

Palm Coast Fire Department’s Engine Nos. 22 and 23, Fire rescue advanced life support and Palm Coast fire battalion responded to the scene, as well.

Traffic was backed up to about Exit 284 but began moving by 5:20 p.m.

Since that fateful hurricane season, the Shermans have gone to over 100 escape rooms, and each has given them ideas for their own rooms at Twisted Minds, the location they operate at 1000 Palm Coast Parkway Southwest, Suite 209. They have been open since Super Bowl weekend this year (“Where did everybody go?”Jessica Sherman had wondered), and are not part of any franchise or chain; all the games are their own. Despite puzzles having been “her thing” since she was little, Jessica Sherman collaborates with Steve Sherman closely on each new idea.

“It can be something simple,” she said, “but how do we make it

“We aspire to be the Disney of escape rooms,” Steve Sherman has said to customers.

There are two rooms open now, Vanished and Camp Calico, along with a spooky Halloweenthemed walkthrough on the other side of the suite, occupied by scare actors on Fridays and Saturdays. The Business Assistance Center, the now-shuttered City Hall location of the Small Business Development Center, helped with securing permits and approval for construction, as the crawl spaces and unorthodox structures presented problems to solve regarding safety regulations.

“Ray Peter was our saving grace in getting in here,” Jessica Sherman said of the BAC’s area manager.

While the Shermans have not needed anything since the BAC closed, they are hoping with crossed fingers that the upcoming construction goes just as smoothly without it.

“It’ll be fine,”Jessica Sherman said.

“We keep telling ourselves that,” her 13-year-old son Steven said.

Twisted Minds has no limit on clues, because most of the clientele has never done an escape room before, but the Shermans are considering a leaderboard available only to customers who restrict themselves to the customary three clues. All customers, however, are forbidden the use of technology.

“Siri and Alexa can’t help you here,”Jessica said.

The record for their rooms is held by a group of eight local detectives, who completed Camp Calico with 36 minutes 10 seconds to spare, no clues requested.

“I’ve had people who’ve played dozens or even hundreds of rooms telling me these were the best they’ve been in,”Jessica Sherman said. She and Steve Sherman dream of additional Twisted Minds locations, or even a freestanding building that can support two-story games complete with chutes and ladders. But for now, their shopping center suite represents a lifetime’s puzzle solved.

“It’s been a long, rocky road to get here,” she said, “but we’re here.”

There was a time, she added, when searching for “attractions in Palm Coast” on Google would return no results. Now it will show you Twisted Minds.

Steve Sherman was enormously proud when he found out. Now he can honestly say, “We put Palm Coast on the map.”

hortly before the start of the second half of Flagler Palm Coast’s game against Ocala West Port, Bulldogs linebacker Tobin Hackett strutted toward the huddle sporting a crown on his head and a trophy in his arms.

Hackett, a senior, was named FPC’s Homecoming King a few minutes prior.

But was this the best moment of his night?

“No,” he said. “I don’t really care about that homecoming stuff.”

That moment came with 1:06 to play in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs had the Wolf Pack backed up near West Port’s own goal line. The Wolf Pack’s quarterback fumbled the snap and struggled to pick up the ball off the rain-soaked grass. Hackett burst into the backfield and dove onto the ball. He recovered it in the end zone for the first defensive touchdown of his high school career.

“It was great,” said Hackett,

who also recorded two sacks. “I just wanted to help my team win.”

After a humbling defeat at the hands of Sanford Seminole a week prior, the Bulldogs (7-1) bounced back with a 52-0 victory over Ocala West Port the night of Friday, Oct. 18, at FPC High School.

The Bulldogs were led by running back Marc Genis, who gashed the Wolf Pack for a 50-yard touchdown on the first drive of the game; and receiver Jonathan Richard, who hauled in two touchdown passes.

“I thought going into this game that execution was going to be a key issue,” Bulldogs quarterback Preston Roberts said. “I think we executed very well.”

Despite the Bulldogs’ nearflawless execution on Friday night, FPC coach Travis Roland was most pleased with the fact that his team didn’t sustain any injuries — especially with a meeting against the rival DeLand Bulldogs on the horizon.

Offensive lineman Tyler Dunn and receiver/defensive end/ punter Altarik Lumpkins are both expected to return.

The FPC Bulldogs, who lost a

hard fought battle to the other Bulldogs 10-3 last season, square off against DeLand at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in what’s expected to be a chippy, trash-talk-filled contest at Spec Martin Stadium.

“It’s not real football unless there’s trash talk,” Roland said.

“These kids care. It’s going to get chippy. It’s supposed to be. It’s a district ball game with the playoffs on the line. We’ve got to be able to play some football.”

FPC cross country’s Jada Williams was the top individual finisher at the Five Star Conference Championship. Williams, who led the FPC girls to a third-place finish, completed the 5,000-meter course in 20:01.61 to win first place. In addition, Ayanna Fulton placed fourth with a time of 20:50.97.

The Pirates (2-6) broke a fourgame losing streak after dominating Lyman 38-14 the night of Friday, Oct. 18, at Matanzas High School.

The Pirates struck quickly after senior quarterback Demontre Neely connected with receiver Tristan Williams for the first

score of the game with 5:56 to play in the first quarter. In the dying seconds of the opening period, Neely escaped a collapsed pocket and scored on a touchdown run.

Senior running back Skyelar Williams-Michaud tacked on a 2-yard rushing score midway through the second quarter, and kicker Stephen Usina split the uprights on a 29-yard field goal

to make the score 24-0.

Lyman didn’t score until the fourth quarter.

Neely was responsible for two more scores in the final period: a 40-yard rushing touchdown and a 4-yard touchdown pass to Gage Winecoff.

Neely finished the game with 134 yards passing and 2 touchdowns and 101 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

The rivalry between Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas’ bowling teams appears to be a friendly one.

“It’s always fun to bowl against them,” Pirates sophomore Corbin Payne said. “We have a good time against each other. It’s not a hateful rivalry. We’re nice to each other.”

Regardless, the Pirates dominated the Bulldogs in their second matchup this season, as the Pirates swept FPC the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Palm Coast Lanes.

“It’s always fun to have that rivalry,” Matanzas head coach Jens Oliva said, “and it’s always fun to be on top.”

This is Oliva’s second season at the helm of the Pirates’ boys bowling program, and as the postseason nears, he’s pleased with the consistency and confidence his team has achieved in that time span.

“They have lot of confidence now,” he said, “in themselves and in each other.”

The goal this season is to qualify for the state tournament. It will be a difficult task, however. The Pirates compete in a tough district, where they’ll face the likes of Mainland, University, Pine

“I feel good about this team,” Payne said. “We’re all close with one another. When someone is down, we’re trying to lift them up the best we can. We just do what we can for each other.”

In addition, FPC’s girls bowling team handled Matanzas 7-0 and bowled a season-high 688 in one game (the previous season-high was 677).

The Bulldogs have lost one match so far this season: a 10-pin defeat against DeLand during a mid-season match. The Bulldogs expect to advance through districts and eventually qualify for the state tournament.

“We’re pretty confident,” Bulldogs senior Gabriella Hernandez said. “We’re just going to have to work as a team, cheer each other on and motivate each other.”

Knowledge is power: Why I joined a DNA study AdventHealth has launched WholeMe, a DNA study in partnership with Helix, that will sequence 10,000 Florida residents’ DNA for genes linked to FH.

DNA is a fascinating subject.

How something so small can hold so much information is mind-blowing, and I know I’m not the only one who is curious about it. DNA testing has spiked in popularity in the last few years or so with the use of at-home testing kits like AncestryDNA and 23andMe. The kits strive to answer one of the questions I’d say most of us are interested: Where did I come from?

One question I hadn’t thought about was, How does my DNA affect my health?

In July, AdventHealth announced the launch of WholeMe, advertised as the “first-of-its-kind” DNA study in the state. The hospital is partnering with Helix, a personal genomics company from California, to sequence 10,000 people’s DNA to screen for genes linked to familial hypercholesterolemia, also known as FH. This is a lifethreatening genetic condition

that causes high cholesterol, and if left untreated, could lead to cardiovascular disease, an AdventHealth release stated.

The study’s participants will also learn about ancestry traits and 22 other genetic traits. Among those, odd ones like whether or not the taste of cilantro offends you, how sweet your sweet tooth really is, and if you have a tendency to tan or get a sunburn caught my attention. I’m also hoping the study tells me I’m a teensypercent Italian so I can justify the four years I’ve studied the language and culture, and the incomplete University of Central Florida minor in the language under my belt. (I needed to graduate!)

So I joined the 10,000 people in the free study. On Monday, Oct. 21, I spit into a little test tube in a room full of people at AdventHealth Daytona. It was just as awkward as you can imagine, even if you were in a little curtained area.

They also had lemons everywhere, because apparently lemons increase your salivation production. Who knew?

But, what happens if you find out you have the genes for FH at the end of the study?

AdventHealth will complete a confirmatory blood test and schedule you for one session with a genetic counselor.

You’ll also be connected with a cardiologist for preventative measures.

For me, that’s a benefit, especially if you believe that knowledge is power. Though appointments at AdventHealth Daytona were only held until Oct. 23, people still wanting to participate in the study can drive to AdventHealth Celebration for studies from Oct. 27 Nov. 1, or to AdventHealth Orlando Nov. 4-21 for a WholeMe appointment. Bullying: How kids can make a difference Bullying among kids continues to be the No. 1 social issue facing this demographic, according to YouthBeat research. This is why Cartoon Network, PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and 826 National are taking action to promote inclusion, acceptance and kindness to unite communities and help keep kids safe.

One in five students report being bullied in a recent survey commissioned by Cartoon Network in consultation with the Making Caring Common project (MCC) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The good news is that the research also suggests that with encouragement and guidance, kids themselves can take action to stop bullying: among its findings — 58% of kids ages 9-11 who have seen someone getting picked on or being left out say that one of the reasons they sometimes don’t help those kids is that they don’t know what to do or say. Moreover, 77% say it would help if there was someone who could give kids ideas about what to do or say in tough situations.

With this in mind, the Cartoon Network’s “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” initiative has joined PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and 826 National in order to inspire kids to make a difference by offering tangible strategies and resources to help everyone feel included. This collaboration has come to life through a joint campaign, called “Include Someone, Make a Difference,” which has a goal of inspiring inclusive acts

among kids in all 50 states.

To help kids get started, the campaign is sharing some ideas for including, valuing and supporting others in classrooms, on the playground and in the cafeteria, just to name a few:  Notice if someone is alone at recess and ask if they want to join you.  Invite someone looking for a place to sit to join your crew.  Start a conversation and learn something new about a peer.  Be patient with those who do things in a different way.  Say “good morning” to some-

one walking to class alone.  Ask someone how they’re day is going and really listen to the answer.  Introduce yourself to someone new.  Give a sincere compliment about something well done.

One of the beliefs of the campaign is that sharing stories and amplifying ideas about the importance of including others will engage, inspire and give kids confidence to do the same.

To that end, they are encouraging kids to visit IncludeSomeone. com and share acts of inclusion and learn how it made others feel

valued and supported. The site, which is tracking and highlighting nationwide participation via an inclusive map, also includes free resources for kids and educators on how to get involved. Teachers can get a free “Include Someone” kit featuring an idea guide, poster, flyers, stickers and cards.

The reasons for bullying are complex. But students have the power to put a stop to bullying before it starts by including someone and making a difference.

Finding mental health by Pieces of Peace October is proclaimed as mental Health Awareness Month PAOLA RODRIGUEZ STAFF WRITER

On Oct. 15, the Palm Coast City Council presented a proclamation to local groups Flagler Cares and Peace by Pieces, designating October as Mental Health Awareness Month.

It calls upon all citizens as well as public and private organizations to recommit to increasing awareness and understanding of mental illness and the need for services to promote recovery.

Peace by Pieces is a nonprofit community wellness center in Flagler County. It is run by Toni Mayes, a yoga instructor, domestic and emotional abuse survivor, and leader who finds purpose and peace in helping people by creating a safe space for the community to gather and find their pieces of healing.

Mayes decided to take action to help improve the mental health of the community due to the high rates of suicides in the county, currently ninth in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health.

According to the 2016-2019 Flagler County Community Health Needs Assessment, 32.71% of the population agreed that mental health/counseling services were difficult to obtain in the community.

The center space is shared with Fifth Season Counseling and supported by around 20 volunteers, small business and individual donations, and community spon-

No matter how small, try to find one thing each morning that you can be grateful for, and also create an intention/motivation. Take these along with you throughout the day. Use it to help anchor yourself and bring you back to the present moment when the mind starts to take you into the past or the present.

Treat your mental health the same way you treat your physical health. We treat an injured arm right away — why do we not take care of our mind and thoughts the same way? Our mind is just as important, even more so! It is where our mental health and wellness resides. It is where our sense of hope and where our love of life originates.

‘They’re all like my sons’: $10,000 for safer football helmets “It’s close to me and close to my heart that they’re all safe.”

The Father Lopez football team thought the helmets came from an unknown private donor. They didn’t know she was so close to the team.

If her son was going to play football, Dr. Whitney Shoemaker was adamant about one thing.

He had to be safe.

Her 16-year-old son, Gunnar Shoemaker, had been asking to play the sport since he was little, but Whitney Shoemaker, a local gynecologist, decided to allow him only when he was in high school. She was concerned about his health — especially the possibility of post-concussive syndrome.

After all, Whitney Shoemaker had seen firsthand the effects of head trauma, both as a resident in the hospital and growing up.

Her family had been close with Tommy Durrance, a former Florida Gators football player. Their families used to vacation together every summer in the Abaco islands, and Shoemaker said Durrance had been like a second dad to her.

Durrance died in 2005 due to a cerebellar degenerative disease.

He was 55 years old.

“To see someone like him who was so energetic and loved life to be in that debilitating situation and lose his motor skills, and almost be trapped in that situation and lose his vitality like that — it was heartbreaking,” Whitney Shoemaker said.

So when she heard about Vicis helmets last spring during a football team education meeting at Father Lopez Catholic High school, she knew Gunnar had to have that helmet.

In fact, she decided the entire team needed them.

“They’re all like my sons,” Whitney Shoemaker said. “I don’t want to see any of them end up like Tommy.”

Each Vicis ZERO1 helmet retails for $950. Shoemaker donated about $10,000 to Father Lopez, which the school matched, so that every football player gets one. This year, the team bought about 25. Whitney Shoemaker has pledged to donate money for the helmets to her alma matter indefinitely.

Father Lopez football Coach Chris Stephenson said Shoemaker’s commitment to safety for the students is “mind-blowing.”

“It almost makes you cry,” he said.

The Vicis helmets are some of the best on the market now, and several NFL players wear them, Stephenson said. The helmets are made to fit the football player and designed to absorb the energy of a hit or fall at impact.

Athletes are getting bigger, faster and stronger, he added. As a result, the injuries are more violent.

Shoemaker’s husband. “It’s very hard to see these guys go through what they go through to play a game.”

Gunnar Shoemaker, a 6-foot2, 280-pound right guard for the offensive line, was born premature. Ryan said his wife was doing everything she could to protect him and the other players.

When the team found out about the helmets, all they were told was that a private donor had aided in buying them. Gunnar Shoemaker didn’t think much of it. He told his mom that “some rich guy” probably bought them, Whitney Shoemaker recalled.

Gunnar Shoemaker didn’t find out until he was called out of class for a newspaper interview. He was shocked.

“It just makes me really proud that she supports us that much,” Gunnar Shoemaker said.

He wants his brothers on the field to be safe, too, and finding out that his mother helped with that makes him appreciative. He said he knows his teammates are too.

“It’s close to me and close to my heart that they’re all safe,” Gunnar Shoemaker said. “If they’re good enough for the NFL, then they’re good enough for us.”

For a healthy mouth and smile, the ADA offers the following tips and recommendations.

One great way to celebrate National Brush Day is with a new toothbrush. It could be time for a new one, anyway. The ADA suggests replacing toothbrushes every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t clean as well. Soft-bristled brushes also protect your teeth and gums.

Talk to your dentist about which types of dental products will be most effective for your family, and also be sure these products carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

How to update your home Why every child needs a lighting to be easy on the eyes comprehensive eye exam If you ever experience eyestrain, tired itchy eyes, blurry vision or headaches, it may be time to give your home a lighting makeover.

Problems caused by bad lighting can be intensified by using it for longer, something most households should keep in mind, as 74% of Americans in a recent survey, commissioned by lighting manufacturer, Signify, say they spend eight hours or more a day under artificial light.

The World Health Organization predicts that 50% of people will be short sighted by 2050.

Unfortunately, there’s a disconnect between people’s concerns about eye health and the steps they are taking to support eye comfort at home. While 80% of U.S. consumers in the same Signify survey say they believe good lighting is beneficial for eye health, a 2017 Signify study found only 21% take that into account when purchasing light bulbs, and only 29% consider light quality.

For many consumers, the disconnect may stem from overwhelming choice when it comes to home lighting and from not having enough information to make an informed decision.

Luckily, manufacturers are taking steps to improve lighting quality and help guide consumers in their search for comfortable light that’s easy on the eyes.

TO FURTHER PROTECT YOUR EYES AND AVOID DISCOMFORT, TRY THIS:  If you are in front of screens (computers, smartphones, televisions) for extended periods of time, close your eyes for 20 seconds or more, every 20 minutes, to allow them to relax.  If outdoors, wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection to help protect your eyes from the sun. It’s helpful to keep a pair in your bag or car, so they are always nearby. Also consider spending a bit more time in natural light and less in artificial light.  Exercise and strengthen your eyes by incorporating simple, yet effective eye yoga exercises into your daily routine for a few minutes daily.  Schedule regular check-ups with an eye specialist, who will be able to detect the first signs of any eye condition or disease.

Making the Most of the Medicare Annual Election Period Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are increasingly popular, offering robust benefits including vision, health, dental, drug coverage and more. For the more than 22 million people with an MA plan, the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP), running from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, is the only time each year when they can shop for alternate plans.

“Health care is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make,” says Brian Evanko, who heads Medicare for Cigna, which serves more than 3 million Medicare customers nationwide through its various plans. “For those unsatisfied with their MA plan, the AEP provides a valuable opportunity to shop for a new one that better meets their specific needs.”

4 WAYS MEDICARE PART D IS CHANGING IN 2020 If you have Medicare and are looking for ways to save on the ever-increasing cost of medications next year, consider adding a prescription plan known as “Part D.” By making medications more affordable, Part D plans can help you stay on track to achieve your 2020 health goals.

Choosing the plan that’s best for you can seem daunting at first, so familiarizing yourself with how Part D plans work is essential.

Here is a brief summary of the changes that will affect each stage of coverage next year.

Alzheimer’s and dementia: Here are 10 warning signs

Every day, roughly 10,000 baby boomers nationwide turn 65, according to the Pew Research Center, which means that a growing number of Americans are dealing with the many challenges associated with aging parents or relatives. Among them is determining when parents may need assistance they aren’t currently receiving.

Unfortunately, when seniors struggle with basic tasks such as self-care, transportation or household chores, they don’t always talk about it. They may be embarrassed or afraid of losing their independence or homes.

Still others may not even realize anything is amiss, particularly if they’re in the beginning stages of dementia.

If a parent requires extra care, consider all your options, including in-home assistance, which allows older adults to continue living at home, while getting needed help. Look for care that offers a whole-person approach, looking beyond basic needs to encompass mind, body, spirit and family to develop specific protocols and interactive activities that stimulate the brain, improve

Recognizing and taking steps to address the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias can be extremely challenging — especially in the early stages. It’s easy and common to dismiss cognitive changes in oneself or a family member as “normal aging.”

“Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging,” says Dr. Keith Fargo, director, scientific programs and outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association. “With normal aging, you may forget where you parked your car — that happens to all of us. But if you get in your car and get lost coming home — that’s not normal.”

Alzheimer’s is a fatal progressive disease that attacks the brain, killing nerve cells and tissue, affecting an individual’s ability to remember, think, plan and ultimately function. Today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, that number is projected to skyrocket to nearly 14 million.

To help families identify signs early on, the Alzheimer’s Association offers 10 Warning Signs and Symptoms, a list of some common signs that can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

WARNING SIGNS THAT AN AGING LOVED ONE MAY BE IN NEED OF SENIOR CARE:  A change in mood, such as depression, anxiety or a loss of interest in social activities and hobbies.  Significant weight loss, which can happen for a variety of reasons, including serious physical and mental disorders.  Issues with mobility and balance. These can be signs of joint, muscle or neurological problems, and increase the likelihood of falls.  Bruises, cuts or scrapes are sometimes evidence of falls or kitchen mishaps, and a potential indication of declining physical agility.  Piles of bills, un-watered plants and overflowing hampers -these are just a few of the many signs that basic tasks are being neglected.  New dents or dings on your parents’ vehicle. These could be signs that safe driving has become an issue.  Stains, missing buttons and untrimmed nails, are signs of neglected personal hygiene.  No food in the house, or moldy, stale or spoiled food, might mean a parent is struggling to grocery shop or cook, or may have even lost interest in eating.  A prescription stockpile could indicate your parent is forgetting to take critical pills.  Stacks of unopened bills, late payment notices, unbalanced checkbooks and wads of cash stashed in odd places, are all signs of mismanaged money.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Difficulty completing daily tasks, such as organizing a grocery list or remembering the rules of a favorite game.

4. Confusion with time or place.

Losing track of dates, seasons and the passage of time.

5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships.

Vision problems, which may lead to difficulty with balance or trouble reading.

6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. Trouble following or joining a conversation or a struggle with vocabulary. For example, calling a “watch” a “handclock.”

7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. Putting things in unusual places and being unable to go back over one’s steps to find them again.

8. Decreased or poor judgment.

Changes in judgment or decisionmaking when dealing with such matters as money and grooming.

9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. Changes in the ability to hold or follow a conversation can result in a withdrawal from hobbies or social activities.

10. Changes in mood and personality. Mood and personality changes, such as confusion, suspicion, depression, fearfulness and anxiety.

just had four years flash before my eyes so quickly. It was emotional for all of us.”

Thursday marked the final dual meet of the season for FPC and Matanzas, one the Bulldogs’ boys and girls teams each won 126-44.

“I’m really proud of this team,” Kurdziel said. “I think ending the regular season against Matanzas was a great way to do it. We all know each other. I have best friends on both teams. It’s just great to see everyone and to be surrounded by people I know and love for my last regular season meet.”

The Bulldogs’ goal entering the 2019 season was to win the Five Star Conference Championship.

t the midway point of Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas’ dual swim meet the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Palm Coast Aquatics Center, every Bulldogs and Pirates swimmer hopped into the pool.

Armed with kick boards, the underclassmen lined up, forming a sort of gauntlet for the seniors to walk through.

Natalia Kurdziel, captain of FPC’s girls team, had witnessed the Senior Day tradition many times before. In her past three seasons with the Bulldogs, she watched as the seniors would hear their names called and walk bravely through the splashing water to the cheer of teammates, coaches, friends and family.

“And this year, I was one of them,” Kurdziel said. “It was surreal.”

Kurdziel was one of four seniors on the Bulldogs’ girls team. FPC’s boys team is graduating 11 seniors.

rainy day did not stop the community from enjoying a weekend of fun and family entertainment at the Europen Village honoring the Italian heritage, thanks to the initiative of Mike DiBietto, his family business Mezzaluna Pizzeria, and other sponsors.

Even though it was the event’s first year and the rain threatened the outcome, the success was evident. DiBietto’s dream of having an event that would bring the community became a reality.

The event included a full kid’s zone, face painting, dunk tank, pizza-eating contest, live music, and food samples. There was also a consistent waiting line to dine at Mezzaluna.

When Muriel and Eugene “Jeep” McCoy moved to Palm Coast in 1985, they found it a pleasant community with everything they wanted for their retirement — except jazz. They sent letters to the Kiwanis Club of Flagler County and other local organizations asking anyone interested in jazz music to meet at their home.

“That night,” Muriel said, “about 40 people showed up.”

So the North East Florida Jazz Association was born, and the McCoys made it a cradle of jazz appreciation for performers and listeners alike, a place to cultivate what Muriel calls “about the only original American art form.”

NEFJA’s president since her husband’s death in 2002, and its scope has expanded since its beginning as an evening meeting at her home.

“The mission is twofold: to bring in world-class musicians and to bring scholarships,” she said.

The NEJFA has awarded around 58 scholarships of $1,000 to Floridian college students so far.

They have to be enrolled in a jazz studies program at a Florida college, and must have at least 30 credits in said program.

“Then you know they’re serious,” McCoy said.

Within the last few years, the NEFJA has expanded its scholarship outreach to high school students, selecting two promising students from Matanzas High School and two from Flagler Palm Coast High School to send to the University of North Florida’s summer jazz program for a week.

The McCoys’ connection to jazz music went back as far as college. Eugene McCoy was a classmate of legendary alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Once they started their 47 years of marriage, they found themselves living across the street from jazz singer and pianist Shirley Horn.

Muriel McCoy said it was Eugene McCoy who first got her into the music when they met, playing her records of Miles Davis, his classmate Cannonball and other greats.

And now Nat Adderley, Jr., Cannonball’s nephew, is bringing his quartet to play at the “Jeep” McCoy Scholarship Concert and Supper at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach. Along

Ocean Shore Blvd. to William Adams, of Ringgold, Georgia, for $1 million. Built in 2009, the house has four bedrooms, 3.5 baths, a fireplace, elevator, dune walk and 3,440 square feet. It sold in 2002 for $190,000. Following is a partial list of other sales for the week.
