Palm Coast honors veterans Veterans were recognized with words of appreciation and live music at the city’s Veterans Day event.

The city of Palm Coast honored America’s heroes with the city’s first Veterans Day barbecue and live music event on Nov. 11 at Central Park in Town Center.

A sunny day welcomed community members to celebrate those who have served the country. Barbecue was presented to veterans who had signed up to attend through various local veterans organizations.

The opening ceremony included the Pledge of Allegiance, the national anthem, a presentation of colors by the Palm Coast Fire Department, and words of appreciation by Palm Coast Mayor

Tom Malinofsky served in Vietnam.

Pulled pork, barbecue beans, coleslaw and apple pie were served to all who registered. County commissioners and Navy veterans Greg Hansen and David Sullivan were also present at the event.

There was also a traditional cake-cutting ceremony that serves as an annual renewal of commitment to service. Following tradition, the first piece was presented to the guest of honor: Thomas Piekarski, who served in the Air Force National Guard for 34 years. The second piece was presented to the oldest veteran present – John Vidota, 90 — and the third piece belonged to the youngest veteran present, 32-year-old Joshua Meeker.

Community members — many dressed in red, white and blue — raised American flags, sang “God Bless America” and listened to speeches and invocations Nov. 11 at Flagler County’s Veterans Day ceremony outside the Government Services Building on State Road 100 in Bunnell.

The county honored this year’s veteran of the year — Deidre Jean Wright, a retired Air Force major with 20 years of active duty service as a aircraft maintenance officer — with a plaque, and the audience applauded a rendition of the national anthem by students of the Flagler Palm Coast High School Formality Singers. FPC Air Force JROTC and Matanzas High School Army JROTC cadets presented and retired the colors.

Extolling the positive values that America stands for in the world, and veterans’ role in making the nation what it is, retired Army Brig. Gen. Ernest C. Audino delivered the event’s keynote address.

Audino, currently the District 6 adviser for U.S. Congressman Michael Waltz, was embedded with a Kurdish Peshmerga brigade in Iraq as a combat advisor for four years.

“We serve as a light and an inspiration to so many around the world,” Audino said of the United States. “What we achieved here in the United States was not achieved just by way of the trigger pullers, but by every member of this country in all walks of life who’s been trying to pull in the same direction and has made this country what it is today. But, for those trigger pullers, we know that all of that was founded on a basis of real sacrifice — and sometimes that sacrifice is the ultimate sacrifice, the full measure.”

He listed the approximate numbers of American soldiers killed in America’s military engagements, starting from the Civil War and continuing through the 15 killed in Syria.

“Real sacrifice,” he said. “But what has that done for us? It has

created a country that put the world on wheels. We have put the world on wings. We have defeated the scourge of Nazi ideology; we have freed the Eastern Bloc; we have taken the world into the Space Age, into the computer age, the information age. The world clamors for the curricula of our colleges and universities; the world devours our literature and our movies. Many of the great advances in medicine are from the United States: I’m particularly proud of that. And more and more.

And none of that — none, my friends — was achieved by forcing anybody to believe anything.

But rather, it was accomplished by giving so many the freedom to believe anything they wanted.

And that is what helps unshackle the individual brilliance of every one of us and everyone who is willing to step up to the plate.”

He paraphrased Ronald Reagan, saying that many people spend their whole lives wondering if they’ve made a difference in the world, but service members — Reagan had specifically mentioned the Marines — don’t have that problem.

“They’ve given us, and they’ve given the world, a land of opportunity,” Audino said.

Audino said he wanted to talk about two people who exemplified that.

The first was his grandfather, who’d immigrated to the U.S.

“Our ancestors who have come here — and many of you who might be immigrants who have come here — you had to be very brave to put everything you knew about the world behind you; in many cases you couldn’t even speak the language of this new country, the United States, but you took that brave step,” he said.

The second was one of his Kurdish interpreters from Iraq.

Had word had gotten out in the man’s neighborhood that he was working with the Americans, he risked being targeted by Al Qaeda, Audino said. But, “He used to tell me, ‘Boss, when you’re on the tough missions, the dangerous ones, don’t ask for anybody else, just ask for me: I want to go with you.’” That interpreter, Audino said, has moved to America.

“It’s because of the sacrifices of the American soldier that the United States remains the great-

est nation in history,” Audino said. “And she’s not perfect, but she strives to be perfect. She is not perfect, but she is the best ever created by humans. Some say she’s not always right, but she always strives for what’s right.

And she may not be appreciated by all, but she is always appreciated by many, especially those in need. God bless our veterans and their families, God bless each and every one of our fallen comrades, and God bless this great nation.”

Veterans organizations participating in the ceremony, according to a Flagler County government news release, included American Legion Post 115, Amvets Post 113, Marine Corps League 876, Military Officers Association of America, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Flagler County Veterans Service Office, Knights of Columbus Color Guard 2810 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86.

Even though Hurricane Dorian missed Florida, it still cost local governments money — and now they have new options for getting it back. The federal government announced in October that Florida counties and cities are eligible to seek reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for money they spent on Dorian.

Palm Coast and Flagler County are both doing so.

Palm Coast dipped into its reserve fund to cover the costs associated with the storm, which totaled about $150,000, much of it in the form of sand and sand bags.

City Council members discussed a budget amendment during their Nov. 12 meeting to cover the cost.

At this point, the city has notified the federal government that it will be seeking reimbursement, and, over the next month or so, will be submitting more detailed documentation to support its claims.

“Congressman [Michael] Waltz, when he was here, he had some concerns with the continual delay of FEMA, with the federal agency blaming the state agency and then the state agency blaming the federal agency,” she said. “It just seemed to be a very big disconnect. So I have offered for Palm Coast to be a case study to help other communities in the process itself, and

to better enhance the process and expedite it moving forward when we have these storm events.”

She warned staff members that they might receive a call from Waltz, or from Florida Rep. Paul Renner or Sen. Travis Hutson.

Other mayors have said that turnover at FEMA has contributed to the delays, she said, “And, on top of it, it’s [the process] rather cumbersome.”

Company may manage city event for $48,000 Palm Coast may pay an event management company called BeMyApp $48,425 to manage the city’s proposed hackathon event, which will be held in Town Center on Jan. 17-19.

Objectives of the event, according to BeMyApp’s proposal, would including developing “innovative healthcare solutions for your hospital partners using Salesforce” and generating “awareness around the City of Palm Coast’s technological and healthcare initiatives.”

BeMyApp would be responsible for creating an event website, designing a logo and marketing materials, creating an event schedule, determining criteria for judging submissions, emceeing and hosting the event, and conducting post-event surveys, among other tasks.

The proposed cost includes payment for three BeMyApp staff members to spend three days working at the event.

It does not include travel and accommodation costs, which, under BeMyApp’s proposal, would be reimbursed after the event.

The council will vote at an upcoming City Council meeting on whether or not to approve BeMyApp’s proposal.

County Judge Andrea K. Totten joins the bench

Flagler County School District students will likely get a full week off for Thanksgiving again in 2020, plus two days off for elections.

Three hurricane makeup days — the week of Thanksgiving — are built into the proposed schedule for the coming school year, which School Board members are expected to review and vote on later this month.

The proposed 2020 calendar has the first day of school for stu-

dents as Aug. 10, a Monday, and the last day as May 22, 2021.

Teachers would start the previous Tuesday and stay one day later.

The first semester would end just before winter break, which would be two weeks, starting on Dec. 21, 2020 (Dec. 22 for teachers) and ending on Jan. 4, 2021.

Because schools will be polling locations for the primary and general elections this coming year, the proposed calendar gives students a full day off on Nov. 3, 2020, and Aug. 18, which would be professional learning days for teachers. Spring break would be March 15-19, 2021, followed by a teacher work day on March 22.

City should charge vacant lot owners for mowing of swales Dear Editor: I want to commend and congratulate Executive Editor Brian McMillan for his recommendation to assess a yearly fee to the 17,000 owners of vacant lots in Palm Coast to cover taxpayer’s cost of mowing their swales.

While the $25 annual fee he suggested might need to be slightly adjusted upwards to cover the actual management, equipment and maintenance cost, this proposal would save Palm Coast taxpayers well over $400,000 a year while still being a substantial bargain for all vacant lot owners.

Taxpayers should never bare the burden of maintaining private property. As a candidate for Palm Coast City Council, I endorse Mr. McMillan’s proposition and will work to implement it once I am elected in 2020. I also fully agree that we could give that $400,000 savings back to taxpayers in the form of lower taxes.

If residents pay for mowing, vacant lot owners should, too Dear Editor: As an almost 20-year resident of Palm Coast, I have to pay for mowing a very large swale on my over-size lot. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. Let’s ask those council members and get them to approve your plan!

Untended vacant lots pose hazards Dear Editor: I live in C-Section on a canal. There are still a number

of vacant lots in the C-Section. We have about five just on our street.

In the past three hurricanes, all the power outages were all the result of power line failures over vacant lots, due to over grown trees, vines, etc.

Periodically, the county or city will bring in a tree-trimming company to cut back the tree limbs over the lines.

There should be some requirement for lot owners to not only maintain the swales, but preserve water flow.

There does not seem to be any enforcement by city code enforcement for this. Many of the swales, where they have to drain under driveways, don’t function because the metal piping has collapsed or is filled with dirt.

In heavy rains, the water often floods the road or intersections due to backed up drainpipes under driveways.

If you live in a HOA (Grand Haven) and own a lot, you are required to provide your own mowing, tree trimming, etc.

Palm Harbor changes would be bad for neighborhood Dear Editor: It is hard to believe that anyone outside the developer and the city of Palm Coast (with new development tax dollars) would be see anything positive about the proposal to add condos to Palm Harbor Golf Course.

For golfers, it would detract from the country club open area and make it more difficult to reach the golf course. If the proposed condos are sold as golf vacation villas, it would make tee times harder to get.

For the homes north of the course, they would now have condos in their midst, and this would no to lower property values. Access to Palm Coast Parkway would be more dif-

ficult.

For the single family homes to the south, their property values would also surely drop and they would face a large increase in traffic on Palm Harbor Drive.

The golf course land is all zoned for recreation use only, and that cannot be changed without a legal fight.

The city can get the driving range land as part of any deal to develop the marina. If the developer wants to play hardball and stop the city from using the driving range while the court fight drags on, the city can reconfigure the land that was envisioned for condos into a temporary driving range.

We certainly do not have to ruin several nice neighborhoods forever just to get the driving range land.

Since the city was given the golf course for nothing, they have poured in over $6 million in tax dollars to bring it to life. If we want to talk about the negatives of a closed golf course, we should compare it to costs for one that was revamped and kept open!

If the city wants to work out something good for the residents on the marina, I’m all for it, but leave the golf course alone.

Hammock is the wrong place for boat storage facility Dear Editor: The county commissioners are going to allow a development called Hammock Harbour to proceed in The Hammock. The Land Development Code prohibits commercial warehouses in the A1A Scenic Corridor. The commissioners decided that a 57,000-squarefoot building used to store 240 boats is not a commercial warehouse.

The following are some of the reasons given by commissioners to justify their decision: Commissioner Greg Hansen said that he talked to a lot of residents, and they said boat storage would be great. He said that fork lift trucks run on propane, and they’re not very loud. (Propane has nothing to do with the noise and beeping generated by a forklift truck.)

Commissioner Dave Sullivan inferred that the new building will look better than what it looks like now. (That has nothing to do with the code.) He also pointed out that Hammock Harbour is next door to Hammock Hardware, which is commercial. (Hammock Hardware is 4,000 square feet.)

Commissioner Joe Mullins implied that since neighborhoods in the area — Sea Colony and Hammock Dunes were mentioned — have restrictions on parking boats, they need a boat storage place. (Residents were aware of that restriction when they moved in.)

He made no comment about the large septic system which will be built, despite having said about the proposed Beachwalk development that will be be using the Palm Coast wastewater system, “I’m very concerned about septic tanks; I don’t want to see them out there at all.”

This development is another step in the annihilation of The Hammock. It is a monument to greed and ill-advised growth.

Sheriff’s Operations Center is fixable, report says ‘They could put millions more into that building, and they’ll still not know if it’s safe,’ Sheriff Rick Staly said.

The Sheriff’s Operations Center on State Road 100 — evacuated since June 2018 after more than 30 employees filed workers compensation claims reporting skin rashes and respiratory problems, and the building was found to have mold — is fixable, according to a report provided to the county by Terracon Consulting.

But Sheriff Rick Staly is not interested in that option, and county commissioners have already made plans for other accommodations for FCSO staff.

“There are so many asterisks on that report, and they admit that this is a snippet in time for their testing,” Staly said. “Unless the county will certify to me in writing that that is a safe building, my employees are not going to be a human Petri dish. ... They could put millions more into that building, and they’ll still not know if it’s safe.”

He added, “I have to look out for the taxpayers, but also it’s my responsibility to stand up for my employees. I don’t think that they can convince me and my employees that that is a safe building.”

NEW BUILDING PLANNED

After the county-owned building was evacuated and mold

found, the county decided in April to have a new facility constructed for the sheriff on Palm Coast Parkway, near the county library building.

Staly said he believed that decision was “the correct path to protect my employees.”

In the meantime, FCSO staff are divided between the county courthouse and the old jail administrative building.

Terracon found high moisture in the slab, mold spores on the older wood of the structure’s frame, and bat guano in a wall. It recommended steps including cleaning mold-affected interior wood, removing the bat guano and pulling up flooring to dry out the slab.

County Commissioner Greg Hansen said it might be worth rehabilitating the building for future use — but not by the FCSO. “Key to the whole thing is, what is it going to cost?” he said.

“There’s a maximum point where we just need to say it’s too much money.”

If the building is rehabilitated, though, it may be useful for other county functions that a re squeezed for space, he said.

“It will be safe if we rehabilitate it,” Hansen said. “We will go to the ends of the earth to ensure that it’s safe.”

NOT A CLEAN GETAWAY 2:17 p.m. 200 block of South Coopers Hawk Way Burglary. An employee of a residential construction company arrived to one of the company’s builds and discovered that someone had stolen the home’s washer and dryer.

Deputies checked footage from neighboring houses’ home surveillance cameras, and one camera showed a man pull up to the vacant house in a white Dodge Ram pickup truck, enter the house, exit with the washing machine and the dryer, load them into the truck, cover them with a tarp and drive off.

Deputies used license plate readers to track the Dodge to a home on Forest Hill Drive.

A deputy also recognized the driver. When they arrived at the house, they noticed that an old dryer was sitting in the driveway.

The resident “became very defensive” and refused when a deputy asked to see the washer and dryer he was using in the house.

The deputies got a search

warrant, verified that the serial numbers of the machines in the house matched those of the ones that had been stolen, and arrested the man.

MEMORY LAPSE 2:08 a.m. First block of Old Kings Road North.

DUI. A deputy was on Old Kings Road when a car passed him, veered into a palm tree near the bowling alley, then backed up and continued onto the roadway.

The deputy and his partner stopped the car and were walking up to speak with the driver when the car started to pull away. They banged on the windows, and it stopped.

As the deputies ordered him out of the car, the driver became irate and tried to pull away again. The deputies pulled him out of the car, which was badly damaged.

The man, who smelled of booze, swore at the deputies and spit at one of them (he missed), and showed signs of memory issues — including insisting that he had not been in a car crash.

Woman caught with meth by court security

FCSO: Ex-felon shot up house in argument over $10

On her way into the Flagler County courthouse Nov. 6 for a hearing related to a previous pick-pocketing charge, a 25-year-old woman was caught with methamphetamine and was arrested again.

The metal detector sounded as Tessa B. Lilly entered the Kim C. Hammond Justice Center on Nov. 6, and a deputy asked that she remove her property and place it in the bucket.

Lilly removed a plastic baggie from her pocket and said it was makeup used for skin treatment.

The deputy observed a clear rock-like substance in the bag which was possibly narcotics.

Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit responded and tested the substance, which tested positive for 1.44 grams of methamphetamine.

Lilly was placed under arrest and charged with possession of methamphetamine.

Lilly has previous narcotics arrests dating back to 2017.

A 62-year-old convicted felon fired a gun into his neighbor’s house July 2 in an argument over $10, and deputies arrested him Nov. 7 after obtaining an arrest warrant, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The FCSO had responded to a home on Dunson Estates Road in Bunnell on July 2 in reference to a weapons complaint.

The victim said he’d been in an argument with his neighbor, Wyatt Cunningham, and minutes later heard gunshots outside his home. When he went to check out the noise, he saw fresh bullet holes in his front door.

FCSO deputies found three bullet holes in the victim’s front door, multiple bullet fragments in the victim’s home and also one bullet that had traveled from the victim’s house and into a neighboring house.

Cunningham told detectives that he’d had an argument

with the victim over being owed $10, but said he did not have anything to do with the gunshots.

He then invited the detectives to have a look around inside his home, where they then found a yellow metal gun cabinet containing a large rifle and ammunition.

When they checked Cunningham’s criminal history, they found that he is a convicted felon, making his possession of a firearm illegal.

Cunningham was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Since his arrest, the FCSO collected additional evidence to prove that the bullet fragments recovered at the victim’s residence came from Cunningham’s rifle.

Detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest on Nov. 7 for shooting into a building.

Cunningham was arrested and taken to the Flagler County jail.

He is charged with two counts of shooting into a building, and is being held without bond.

FCSO searches for man accused of $10,000 forgeries

Man molested girlfriend’s 11-yearold, FCSO says

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Labor Finders, a staffing agency, on June 27 regarding potential fraudulent activity by a former employee. Cory Neil Hall, 27, of Palm Coast, who began working at Labor Finders on March 25 had potentially falsified his time sheets.

Hall had been working at Delfinos at the Club at Hammock Beach Resort when restaurant management found that 49 out of 70 time sheets he submitted had been signed off on using inconsistent signatures by restaurant staff.

The total listed amount billed

by Labor Finders to Delfinos was $15,786.15. Of the total amount billed, Delfinos had already paid $5,285.25.

Hall as charged with 30 counts of uttering a forgery, which totaled $10,887. Hall would also be charged with grand theft over $10,000.

“He thought he could write his own checks and deceive his employer,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “I suggest he face his charges and turn himself in before he finds himself in even more trouble as he is now considered a fugitive from justice.”

Hall has been trespassed from Delfinos. Hall may have fled back to his home state of Ohio due to this pending case against him.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested Palm Coast resident Phillip Martin, 53, on a charge of molesting an 11-year-old girl.

On July 2, the FCSO responded to a call for a sex offense.

During the investigation, the 11-year-old victim told deputies that she had been inappropriately touched for over a year

by Martin, a former boyfriend of the child’s now deceased mother.

Further investigation revealed that Martin was allowed to continue to visit the child after the mother’s passing and the abuse would occur during these visits when the victim’s grandparents left the room. The victim also stated that when she would try to pull away from Martin during times of unwanted touching, he would pull her back and restrain her.

On July 29, FCSO detectives met with Martin at his home located on Wedgewood Lane in Palm Coast to hear his side of the story. During questioning, Martin admitted to inappropriately touching and groping the child. The reason he gave for his behavior was that he found her attractive and derived gratification from the acts.

Martin was booked in jail on no bond.

Dance’s political tightrope: board member, candidate

While Superintendent James Tager was delivering his State of Education address on Tuesday, Nov. 5, one person was conspicuously absent: School Board member Andy Dance.

Dance, who had helped to institute the annual State of Education tradition years earlier when he was chairman of the School Board, has declared his intention to run for County Commission in 2020, and so he will be resigning from the School Board next fall.

In the meantime, he is wearing both hats simultaneously: one as School Board member and the other as County Commission candidate.

If the choice had been between the forum and a regular School Board business meeting with votes being made, Dance said it would have been an easy choice: “You can’t put the board at a disadvantage with four members,” he said. “A business meeting with votes taking place would always take precedence.”

New veterans parking spaces to be dedicated

Flagler County will add additional veterans-only parking spaces at county facilities this week, Special Projects Manager Michael Esposito said at a County Commission meeting Nov. 4.

In addition to the two existing veterans-only parking spots at the county’s Government Services Building on State Road 100, the county is adding one spot at the General Services Building, two at the county courthouse, two at the Emergency Operations Center and two at main Flagler County Library branch in Palm Coast.

County recognizes Veterans Week with proclamation

County Commissioner Greg Hansen, a 27-year Navy veteran and Vietnam War veteran, read the proclamation, which noted that there are more than 11,633 veterans in Flagler County, of which approximately 875 are World War II veterans.

“Americans owe their undying gratitude to all those veterans who have sacrificed their health and in many cases paid the ultimate price in defense of freedom,” Hansen said, reading the proclamation. “ ... The freedom that the children and grandchildren of those veterans now enjoy is a testament to the generations of patriots who have served our great country.”

In 2018 and 2019, approximately 225 members of the Florida Army National Guard unit stationed at the Flagler County Executive Airport were deployed to the Middle East, Hansen said.

Speaking after the proclamation, Ernie Audino, retired Army brigadier general and current district director at the office of U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, added: “As you ... serve in some of these places ... the blessings that we have in this country are made very, very clear. ... So the veterans, in a way, have an advantage — and it’s strange to put it that way, but I really do think it’s an advantage — of a foundation for the appreciation for what we have, and a commitment to do the best to secure those and promote those, not just for this great country but for all of humanity. … It’s a calling to serve; it’s a commitment to serve a purpose much larger than yourself — which, in life, is kind of what makes so many things worthwhile.”

Health declared a public health emergency on Aug. 1, 2019, because of an outbreak of hepatitis A statewide. There were almost 3,000 cases reported from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2019, already about six times the total in all of 2018.

In response, the state created an incident command structure, providing additional resources and requiring each county to set goals and report on progress for administering vaccinations.

“It’s an all-hands-on-deck approach,” said Bob Snyder, director of the DOH in Flagler County.

While Flagler was just recently moved into the high-risk category, Volusia County has long been one of the worst areas — it has the fourth most hepatitis A cases in the state in the past two years.

Reese feels the urgency. She is working overtime and on weekends. In the past six months, she has vaccinated more than 600 people.

To address the drug rehab patients, she has been to Project WARM (Women Assisting Recovery Mothers) multiple times. She is also developing partnerships with doctors to offer the vaccines to anyone who is prescribed Suboxone, a medication to help people stay off illegal substances.

She has given vaccines to people in Drug Court.

To address the jail population, she has visited the Flagler County jail 10 times. The jail medical staff also administers the vaccine now.

going on,” she said. “I tell them Volusia is only 10 miles away, so any people who frequent Volusia — you’re opening yourself up for the opportunity to contract it and bring it back to Flagler County.”

She explains to the patient that the first shot is 94% effective in preventing someone from contracting the disease. Six months later, they can get a second shot that will increase the effectiveness to 99%.

Because she’s been working at this for so long, people have gotten to know her. Reese’s personality has been key to the success of the program.

“She’s very transparent, engaging, approachable, friendly, professional,” Snyder said. “What a perfect skill set. … She doesn’t miss an opportunity.”

But she’s not discouraged.

There are others who will accept.

And those who decline may accept the second or third time they’re offered. Through her words and demeanor, she hopes to convey this message: “You’re from my community. I care about you.”

She said, “My goal is for this community to be as safe as it can be by vaccinating as many people as we can.”

The city councilman, a Marine Corps veteran, said the controversy should not preclude a plaque.

Two years ago, Palm Coast rejected a proposal to place a plaque recognizing veterans of the USS Liberty — the reconnaissance ship attacked by the Israeli military in 1967 — next to the city’s Purple Heart memorial in Heroes Park. But at a City Council meeting Nov. 5, City Councilman Jack Howell pushed his colleagues to approve the plaque.

The unprovoked attack occurred during the Six-Day War between Israel and multiple Arab nations in 1967. It killed 34 U.S. service members and wounded more than 170, and has led to ongoing controversy about whether the Israeli government knew at the time that it was striking an American vessel, or, as it has stated, mistook the American ship for an Egyptian one. An official U.S. Navy inquiry in 1967 deemed it a mistake, but USS Liberty veterans have said they believe the Israeli military was aware of the ship’s identity when the attack commenced.

Howell, a retired Marine Corps colonel and head of the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, passed his Purple Heart medal to other City Council members before addressing them toward the end of the Nov. 5 council meeting.

“I want you to look at this,” he said. “... Because this is Veterans

Day, I want to bring up a subject that we’ve heard before, and that’s about the USS Liberty. ...

The bottom line is, 34 people on that ship were killed and 200some were wounded and the Congress does not give this out” — he held up his Purple Heart medal — “unless you’ve been in a hostile zone.”

The USS Liberty service members had been awarded Purple Heart medals.

“Because of the politics at the time, the Johnson administration didn’t want to upset the Israelis; there was a mistake,” Howell said.

“But I’ll tell you this: When you’re on the incoming end of a round of rockets or 20-mm cannon or whatever, it’s not an accident, it’s deliberate.”

The city had considered having a plaque installed in the past after Palm Coast resident Ernest Gallo, a USS Liberty veteran and survivor of the attack, proposed the idea in 2017. The proposal was approved unanimously by the city’s beautification committee, but was rejected by the City Council after then-City Manager Jim Landon cautioned that the plaque would be memorializing an event and could lead to requests for other such events to be memorialized as well.

vice members who fought as allies in World War II, a plaque recognizing prisoners of war and those missing in action, and a memorial dedicated to veterans with PTSD. The text of the proposed USS Liberty plaque includes this quote, about the members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps who were involved: “They hover as a cloud of witnesses above this nation.”

Mayor Milissa Holland thanked Howell for his comments and for his service. There was no further discussion of the USS Liberty plaque during the meeting.

The Pirates’ cross country teams competed in the FHSAA State Cross Country Meet the morning of Saturday, Nov. 9, in Tallahassee. Matanzas’ girls team finished 18th overall, with senior Kelly Steffens as its top finisher. She placed 83rd with a time of 20:41.50. For a brief moment, it appeared Flagler Palm Coast was going to win its first playoff game under third-year head coach Travis Roland.

Trailing Apopka 21-19 with 1 minute, 38 seconds left in the third quarter, Bulldogs quarterback Preston Roberts dropped back to pass. He lofted a ball deep down the middle of the field, and it was caught by receiver Ty Graham, who out ran two defensive backs on his way to a 76-yard touchdown.

What happened in the remainder of that third quarter was, ultimately, a disaster.

On the first play of the Bulldogs’ next drive, Roberts was strip sacked, and the Blue Darters recovered the fumble. The Blue Darters scored on a 23-yard run two plays later.

And finally, on the Bulldogs’ responding drive, Roberts floated a pass over his receiver and it was intercepted. Apopka’s Billy Riley returned the pick 55 yards for a score with 21 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Blue Darters scored 21 points in 1 minute, 17 seconds, vaulting No. 3 seed Apopka to a 42-25 win over No. 6 seed FPC (8-3) in the first round of the Class 8A FHSAA State Playoffs the night of Friday, Nov. 8, on a rain-drenched at Apopka High School. It was the third year in a row the Bulldogs suffered a first round exit.

“We beat ourselves,” said FPC running back Ty Jenkins, who completed a 75-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jonathan Richard on a trick play for the Bulldogs’ first offensive play of the game.

“It’s devastating.”

Despite the loss, Roland was proud of what his team has accomplished. In his three years leading the team, the Bulldogs have won a total of 25 games and have been to the playoffs each season.

“We’ve won a lot of football games together,” he said. “I’m proud of this group of kids. It sucks, but we have to move on and pick our heads up.”

Pirates girls soccer aims for rebuilding year Matanzas is tasked with figuring out to replace its senior talent from last season.

After a season in which Matanzas’ girls soccer team went 9-12 and graduated some of their top players, the Pirates’ Pawel Slusarz said his team will have to focus on the mental aspect of the game entering his second season as the head coach.

“That’s the biggest thing,” Slusarz said. “Hopefully with a new group, we can fix that.”

The Pirates had high expectations last season but suffered a 6-0 loss to Ponte Vedra in the district semifinal on Jan. 28. In addition, the Pirates graduated one of the school’s best goal scorers in team captain Alyssia Paiz, who topped 100 goals for her career last season.

Slusarz isn’t expecting to replace someone of her abilities anytime soon.

“It’s tough,” he said. “We all know that she was a scoring machine. It takes time to find a replacement like that. Without someone like that this year, we need to play more as a team, more as a group. We cannot count on one player to score those goals for us. Finding someone who can put the ball in the back of the net will be one of our biggest challenges.”

‘It’s all about working together’: FPC girls soccer preview FPC’S 2019 ROSTER

Bulldogs girls soccer ready to compete in new district For the past several years, the girls soccer district championship has almost always come down to a showdown between local powerhouses Flagler Palm Coast, Spruce Creek and University.

That’s all changed now.

The Bulldogs — who opened the 2019-20 season with a 3-0 victory over Seabreeze the night of Tuesday, Nov. 12, at FPC High School — are now in a new district. They’ll compete against teams from Jacksonville this season, including Bartram Trail, Nease, Oakleaf, Mandarin and Sandalwood.

Pete Hald, who is entering his 29th season as the head coach of the Bulldogs, expects this year to be a difficult one thanks to the new district and a tougher schedule.

“We’re going to have a tough time,” he said. “I just want to give us a chance to move on in the playoffs.”

In addition, a tradition at the end of each season for the Bulldogs is to graduate a plethora of senior talent. That was no different last year, as the Bulldogs graduated Emily Puentes, Brielle Landry and Jaryn Paley, among others.

In total, the Bulldogs have graduated 16 players over the past two seasons.

The Bulldogs have made the district final each of the last 17 seasons. To get there again, they’re going to have to rely on their team chemistry.

“It’s all about working together,” junior forward Ashley Buglione said. “We all have the same goal: to win and be successful on the field. So I think that’s going to push us.”

When Flagler Palm Coast cross country’s Jada Williams runs, she enters a mental bubble. She focuses on each breath, each stride until the race is over.

But she wasn’t always like this.

As a freshman last season, she had a difficult time staying positive.

When will the race be over? I’m so tired, she used to think.

“It definitely takes a lot of mental strength,” Williams said.

“You really have to have a positive mindset if you want to improve.”

In her sophomore season, Williams became the top runner for

the Bulldogs’ girls team, and was the only FPC runner to qualify for the Class 4A FHSAA Cross Country State Final.

At first she was nervous to compete without any of her teammates competing alongside her. But she had a lot of support, regardless. In addition to her coaches, mother and brother, three of her teammates showed up to cheer her on.

Williams arrived in Tallahassee on Friday, Nov. 8 — the day before the final — to go through a practice run on the course at Apalachee Regional Park.

Just before the finish line is a large hill. Williams practiced her strides up the hill relentlessly

before. She struggled.

The nerves stayed with her until the beginning of the race.

But with the crack of the starter’s pistol, the jitters melted away — even when she faced the daunting hill.

“I was prepared for it,” she said.

“It ended up being just another hill.”

Williams completed the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 19.1 seconds, which earned her a 26th-place finish.

Her goal for next season is to drop below the 19-minute mark.

“If I put more time and effort into it, I feel like I can get really good,” she said.

“I started going to open mics and writing every day for just the catharsis of it,” he said. He has been sober and happy for over eight years.

JOKE: Modern comedians don’t do “parlor jokes” — we’re satirical. We don’t really write street jokes, that we can put in our act. So, if you want to hear me tell a joke, you have to come to see me perform.

f you want to talk about comedy in Flagler County, you have to include Cristy Barrick or Cristy B, as she prefers to be called, to the conversation.

She is a single mom of three from Maryville, Tennessee. She’s a cosmetologist, comedian and an entrepreneur. She devotes her limited time to booking national comedians alongside local talent to expand the live entertainment business in the area.

She was inspired to try stand up comedy after seeing Rita Rudner appear on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson in the 1980s.

Rudner was one of the first female comedians she ever saw on TV. Twenty-five years later, Cristy B took the stage for the first time in Atlanta.

She performs for private events at venues like the Palm Coast Social club or Break Awayz, where she has been performing for three years on the last Wednesday of every month.

What about other local comedians? Each has a story of how they got into the business — sometimes through a happy accident, and sometimes as a way to heal from traumatic experiences in life.

They all share the “indescribable feeling of making people laugh” and the “rush of stepping on the stage.”

They take the challenge to connect with the audience in minutes, creating a consistent flow of laughter through humorous monologues, dialogues or anecdotes.

Want to hear some local talent? Brian Thomas runs a comedy show with local comedians the last Sunday of every month in Moonrise Brewing Co. Cristy B’s next show is Comedy Hypnosis on Nov. 13, at the Palm Coast Social Club, featuring Richard Barker.

JOKE: I went to a job interview, and the interviewer asked, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” I replied, “I see myself as a black belt.”

He said, “That’s impressive how long have you been doing martial arts?”

I replied, “Never. You just said I have five years.”

The ladies from the craft workshop (Convivio dos Lavores) of the Portuguese American Cultural Center got together and knitted 10 small over-thelap blankets and delivered them to the Grand Oaks Rehabilitation Center. Their only request was that the red blanket would go to Jorge Soares, a resident of the center, as red is the color of Benfica, his favorite soccer team.

The craft workshop ladies also recently donated over $500 of feminine body-care products to the Family Life Center’s shelter.

Ruth A. Upton of Palm Coast, Fla. passed away on October 22, 2019.

Born in Lowell, Mass., Ruth was the daughter of Mary and Joseph Caron.

She graduated from Lowell High School and Lowell Community College and soon met the love of her life, Bob Upton. They moved to Shelton, Conn. where she worked for 33 years at Sikorsky Aircraft. In 1987, Ruth and Bob retired to Palm Coast where they loved to entertain and were active in the community, including the VFW, Knights of Columbus and Elks. Ruth loved to line dance, crochet and craft, play mah jongg and shop (she always was dressed to a T).

Ruth and Bob were married 60 years when Bob passed away in 2017, after which she moved to assisted living in Palm Coast where she taught line dancing, kicked ass at Bingo and “collected” cookies. She spoke often of Bob and the wonderful life they shared. She was predeceased by her sisters Claire, Alice and Mary, brother John, and special niece (“sister”) Patricia Santos. Ruth and Bob are survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Their ashes will be laid to rest at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Lowell on Nov. 16.

Mariecel “Lexie” Martizon Peck, age 47, passed away, Saturday, October 26, 2019 at her home in Bunnell, Florida after a long 5 year (2005-2007; 2016-2019) courageous battle with breast cancer. She was in the presence of her loving family.

Lexie was born on September 11, 1972 to the late Julio Martizon and Ofelia Martizon in Caloocan, Philippines. She was a high school graduate of Manila Central University in 1989 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from the University of the East, Caloocan in 1993. She was a hard motivated worker and had proven to be a great asset to her employers, landing managerial jobs. She is a mother to three wonderful children: Julia (22), Kenneth (21), and Chelsea (19).

Lexie was married in 1998. Unfortunately, the marriage failed in 2005, which was also the same year she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She became a single mom while undergoing mastectomy and cancer treatments.

Lexie was never one to give up hope and faith. She was a member of the New Testament Faith Church in the Philippines - where her father was a pastor - and Flagler Beach Community Church. She had a very strong faith in God. Lexie, with God by her side, would continue sacrificing and dedicating her life for her children. This love is what eventually brought her to the United States, although, her plans had to be put on hold for her cancer had returned and a second mastectomy was performed in May 2017. Most people would find it very hard to continue on after this but not Lexie - never losing hope and her strong will, she would push forward.

In May 2018, Lexie had fallen in love and got married to her loving soul mate, Craig Peck of Bunnell, Florida.

Their love for each other shined and they were extremely happy to begin their lives together, but their plans soon went to a different direction. In October 2018, Lexie’s cancer came back for the third time and the prognosis was terminal.

Lexie was the most caring, loving, faithful person and she would always stay positive. She was an inspiration to everyone she met. She had this certain glow about her for God was always guiding her. She would always put everyone else before her self. Her life story had touched so many here in the US and in her home country. She came from a family of artists and was also gifted in arts. Custom baking was her passion and her

Nature Scapes shifts from garden center to landscaping Garden center property purchased by nearby church, preschool to open there JOEY PELLEGRINO STAFF WRITER

While Nature Scapes Landscape and Garden Center, a Flagler County institution since 1984, closed the doors to its garden center on Oct. 26, new owner David Matchett wants people to know the landscaping business will continue as usual.

“Same staff, same phone number, same website, same Facebook, same address,” Matchett said. “We’re just not selling plants anymore.”

The business was founded by Marylou Baiata and run by her for 30 years until her death in 2014, after which it was run by her son Chris, who sold the business to Matchett in 2018.

“I’ve always loved the landscaping business,” Matchett said. He liked the scenery on the

property, surrounded by majestic oaks, but Nature Scapes’ wooded seclusion and invisibility from the road soon worked against the prospects of the garden center.

“Location, location, location,” Matchett said. “The staff here is great, but this is no place for a retail business.”

According to Matchett, the majority of Nature Scapes’ income did not come from plant sales even before he purchased it from Chris Baiata.

“Some days there’d be two, maybe three people coming in,” he said. “Ninety-five percent of our business is landscaping, design, installation and maintenance.”

More people came to see the exotic birds in the Baiata Bird Sanctuary, he said, but even those will be taken to another sanctuary in DeLand. Matchett considered relocating the garden center, but “it’s hard to compete with Lowe’s and Home Depot.”

Nature Scapes held a clearance sale for multiple weeks to liquidate its stock of plants; around

half were sold, and the rest will be used in landscaping projects.

The garden center property will remain intact without its retail items, as God’s Family Church and Bible School plans to open Garden of Faith Preschool on it in early December.

Renovation is nearly complete inside what will be the preschool, installing walls and insulation into what was an open warehouse. It used to host an art collaborative masterminded by J.J. Graham, until disagreements with Chris Baiata led the former owner to evict Graham and shutter the collaborative. Graham has since returned to paint the preschools’ floor with playful splashes of color.

“The fact that he came back to paint those floors says a lot about him,” Matchett said.

He said the church also plans to purchase the rest of the surrounding property for a “Garden of Faith Village.”
