t was the family dog that alarmed the Raymonds about the fire that ended up consuming their home and their vehicles on Wednesday, Dec. 4, in Seminole Woods.

Ruger started barking at 1:30 a.m. It was an unusual and consistent bark that got Chad Raymond out of bed. He walked around to find smoke coming out of the kitchen area. He unplugged

“It could’ve been too late,” Chad Raymond said.

Building codes in Florida do not require smoke detectors in the garage or attics, and according to their adjusters and insurance, it is not uncommon for fires to start in those places.

Mimi Raymond looks down as she talks about the emotional journey and the possessions she lost that had sentimental value, such as handmade Christmas ornaments, photo albums and memorabilia from her mother.

Ruger, who was the biggest puppy from the litter, has gotten a big bone as a reward, and he is considered the “hero” of the story.

But, many other heroes have come to help and support during this hectic and overwhelm-

Losing one golf course, protecting another If the plan is approved, the city will own the Palm Harbor Golf Club driving range outright, ensuring that homes won’t be built there.

Proposal for homes on Matanzas course stirs uproar Hundreds of Palm Coast residents gathered to hear the developer’s proposal, many expressing outrage at details.

Around 200 residents of the Matanzas Woods neighborhood gathered in the Matanzas High School Cafeteria Dec. 5 to hear about proposed development of the derelict Matanzas golf course, and response ranged from cautious optimism to skepticism and hostility.

Attorney Michael Chiumento III and developer Alex Ustilovsky ,of Hammock Real Estate, presented a map of where roughly 300 homes, as well as lakes for stormwater retention and a strip of land for commercial development, would go within the former course’s property. But before the meeting was long underway, Chiumento and Ustilovsky began fielding questions and calming outbursts from an agitated crowd.

THE LAND ‘CAN AND WILL BE DEVELOPED’

The uproar began at Chiumento’s observation that the neglected land “can and will be developed.”

Some residents stormed out.

“He’s gonna give you a bunch of double-talk!” said the first man to leave, after questioning the point of the meeting.

Another resident claimed the developer’s plans were illegal, said they were lying about performing a water test, and threatened a class action lawsuit.

Palm Coast Deputy Chief Development Officer Ray Tyner said at the start of the meeting that city code requires a neighborhood meeting before a Master Planned Development application.

Chiumento said that there would be natural buffers of around

30 feet between existing homes and the proposed new ones.

“We’re willing to work with homeowners on creating a buffer that satisfies them,” he said.

He also said that the projected lot size for the new homes — 6,000 square feet with a width of 50 feet — was in line with what older homebuyers are looking for: less property to take care of.

Meeting attendees, many of them older homeowners, found this a dubious suggestion. Concerns were raised about decreasing property values and increasing crime rates if the news homes were bought and turned into rentals, or if they became lowincome housing.

“It’s not the sport of golf that drives the property values,” said Brad West. “It’s the sense of privacy and the view.”

“I think most of us in Matanzas Woods feel the city has neglected the place for a very long time,” said Colleen McFarlane after other residents complained that the promised quarterly mowing of the property was never done.

“People call it the hinterlands.”

‘WHAT’S GOING ON IN MY BACKYARD?’

Lawton Taylor suggested a park instead of a commercial area in the middle of the development.

“Y’all are making enough money off the houses,” he said.

Ustilovsky drew the crowd’s ire for suggesting the question “What’s going in my backyard?” is not a neighborly attitude and that there was an air of elitism around the concern over rentals.

“Our idea was very simple: Respect existing zoning,” he said.

“Respect existing neighbors.

Respect you.”

Other city employees besides Tyner, including Chief Development Officer Jason DeLorenzo and Communications Officer Michael Schottey, were present to observe the meeting.

“We’re here to hear what the neighborhood wants,” DeLorenzo said.

“I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” Chiumento said. “Projects like this are emotional. This is going to be good; we’re going to fix people’s concerns.”

Palm Harbor plan shifts from 120 condos to 50 town homes City says developer is listening to residents. Protect Palm Coast member still isn’t convinced.

The developer who had proposed to build 120 condo units at the Palm Harbor Golf Club has changed the plan to 50 town homes, after listening to residents’ concerns, according to the city of Palm Coast’s chief development officer, Jason DeLorenzo.

At least one member of Protect Palm Coast, Lou Vitale, is not satisfied. “It’s not good to have the golf course rezoned and have any residential property on it,” he said. He believes this is the first step to developing on the golf course itself — a claim that Mayor Milissa Holland said isn’t true.

The Palm Harbor development will not be discussed at the city’s Dec. 18 Planning and Land Development Regulation Board meeting, as was previously planned.

It will be delayed until February, City Manager Matt Morton said.

WHAT IS THE CITY GIVING AND GETTING?

The proposed rezoning would result in the golf course becoming a master planned development, or MPD. The land is 165 acres. JDI owns 17, and the city owns the rest.

Each acre has an entitlement to build one home, DeLorenzo said.

Therefore, JDI is currently entitled to build 17 homes. But, those homes could be built right on the driving range, and the city wants to preserve the driving range for the health of the golf course.

In exchange for ownership of the driving range, the city is in negotiations to give up some of its entitlements to build homes.

That’s not a great sacrifice, because the city isn’t interested in seeing homes on the golf course, DeLorenzo said.

JDI, if it acquires an additional 33 entitlements from the city, could build the proposed 50 town homes on the same 17-acre property.

Could the city then sell the course to a developer, as Vitale fears? Yes, DeLorenzo said, but it’s no more likely to happen after the rezoning than it was before the rezoning. The city always could have sold the golf course land. But, as Holland stated, the city wants to preserve the course.

WHY TOWN HOMES?

JDI’s plan of 50 town homes would be built in clusters of three or four. That means there could be 12 to 15 smaller clusters, rather than five larger buildings, allowing more flexibility and avoiding historic and specimen trees.

Town homes were also chosen because they are “more compatible” with the single-family neighborhood, DeLorenzo said.

WHAT ABOUT THE DRIVING RANGE?

The current plan would still deliver the driving range from JDI to city ownership. That benefits both JDI and the city, DeLorenzo said. The city won’t have to live in fear that the developer will take the driving range away, and the developer no longer is liable for an injury on the driving range.

IS CITY BEING ‘PROTECTED’?

Vitale said that after seeing the unrelated proposal by another developer to build homes on the Matanzas Woods course, he feels that it’s even more important to tell City Council that many residents aren’t interested in seeing this land developed.

He continued: “Protect Palm Coast is initially about Palm Harbor, but I’m now seeing that I need to organize all of Palm Coast.”

Palm Coast doesn’t have much in the way of electric vehicle charging stations. There are the city-owned ones at City Hall, a Tesla charging spot at Legacy Vacation Resort, off Palm Harbor Parkway and a SemaConnect near Grandhaven. But Palm Coast might soon get as many as 14 more.

Florida Power and Light is working on a program to provide municipalities with charging stations, with an agreement in which the city would pay the electric bill and FPL would pay for charging station installation, maintenance and repairs.

“We’ve seen an incredible expansion in electric vehicles in the state of Florida,” Anuj Chokshi, a project manager for FPL, told Palm Coast City Council members during a council workshop Dec. 10.

The company is expecting that by 2025, around a fifth to a quarter or all the cars sold will be electric, he said.

The FPL pilot program, he said, is looking to establish approximately 1,000 charge ports in the state.

Howell suggests vape restrictions to protect minors Palm Coast City Councilman Jack Howell has been working with the city attorney to craft an ordinance to ban the sale of e-cigarette equipment to minors and to ban vaping in places where cigarette smoking is banned. The proposed ordinance would also ban the sale of e-cigarette materials through vending machines.

“I did check with the school board, and their numbers are increasing,” he said of students caught vaping in the schools. The numbers are fairly low, he said, “but one is high enough,” and some of the young e-cigarette users are in middle school.

He noted that in some cases the vape fluids include other drugs.

If the city can pass an ordinance, he said, “At least we’re on record of doing something that will be for the betterment of our citizens” on the subject.

Howell also asked Reischmann to look into the possibility of Palm Coast joining the city of Orlando’s lawsuit against manufacturers of opiates. “This is a very bad situation with this particular drug and fentanyl and what have you, and I think we need to take the lead on this and say we don’t want this stuff in our city,” he said.

He added, “The bad people always seem to get this stuff, but if it makes it a little but more difficult, so be it.”

County to spend $250,000 to help beach qualify for aid Flagler County will seek to have a portion of its coastline designated as a flood protection and wildlife preservation facility, a move that could ease the process of applying for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for beach dune reinforcement or repairs.

County Commissioner Greg Hansen proposed the designation change during a County Commission meeting Dec. 2, adding that he would like to see the county establish an erosion control line and add additional sand to the areas that county staff has already renourished, so that they will have protection comparable to the areas that will be built up by the Army Corps of Engineers in its beach renourishment project in Flagler County.

NEW STUDY WILL COST COUNTY $48,000 TO EVALUATE SALARIES

In 2018, Flagler County paid an independent firm to study the salaries of county staff members relative to the salaries of comparable positions elsewhere to find out if county workers were under- or overpaid.

The study found that a range of Flagler County government positions were underpaid, and suggested steps to bring them up to market rate.

But the plan was never implemented fully, and now commissioners will spend another $48,000 with the same firm for a new salary study. The 2018 study had cost $38,500.

County Human Resources Manager Pamela Wu said that when she conducts exit interviews with employees, their reasons for leaving tend to be pay-related — either they were unable to meet financial obligations locally with their current pay rate and looked for better options, or they weren’t looking but heard about a better-paying position and decided to apply for it.

“It’s clearly a compensation issue, and that’s whey we are unable to retain our employees,” Wu said.

Commissioner Greg Hansen, after Wu presented the rationale for the new study, said the commission had heard the same arguments two years ago, and agreed to the plan only to find out that it hadn’t been implemented.

The designation would require the approval of the Legislature and the governor’s signature, he said, but would then make beach projects in the county eligible for FEMA funding under “much less onerous rules.”

The designation could be drafted such that it would not hinder residents’ beach access rights, County Attorney Al Hadeed said.

The commission decided to designate $250,000 for the delineation process.

“I find that troubling,” he said.

Wu said that the pay plans proposed in the first study had been implemented at a lower rate than had been recommended, and that the process currently underway would have employees at the recommended 2018 rates in 2021, when the market would have moved on.

Michael Misrahi, a senior consultant for Evergreen Solutions, the firm which had conducted the study, said the county was 4% behind the market on average, but that certain blue collar trades were further behind — equipment operators, for example, are being paid 10% below the market rate, he said. If the county doesn’t act, he said, the county could see its 4% market gap grow to 10% or more over the next few years.

County Administrator Jerry Cameron said there was also another shortcoming of the 2018 study: It had only looked at comparable positions in the public sector, not the market as a whole. The county had determined that scope at the time, Cameron said. But the county isn’t just competing with other public sector employers, he said.

“Our biggest competitors are not the government,” he said.

The new study would look at private sector salaries as well.

“Of all that we do, this perhaps is the most important,” Cameron said. “The employees that we hire will outlast all of us.”

Dear Editor: Currently there is a rapidly increasing controversy concerning putting condominium housing in an existing neighborhood. The owner of the property wants to give the golf course driving range to the city in return for the city greenlighting his plan to build five multiple story buildings on land adjacent to the golf course. (Editor’s Note: See the story on Page 3 for the developer’s updated proposal.) This will not solve the problem facing a growing number of senior citizens because these units will sell for market value.

Therefore this increase in housing stock will not only drive down the value of homes in that neighborhood but will not meet the need for affordable housing for seniors.

In every local political race, the issue of affordable housing comes up, and candidates struggle to find an approach that would be acceptable to both extremes. The one extreme thinks affordable housing means Section 8 and bringing in “those kind of people”. The other extreme pushes for affordable housing because of the low paying jobs here and the need for young people to be able to find housing, get married, and raise a family.

There is a currently a silent and increasing population that will be in need of affordable housing. That population is composed of seniors, whose retirement dream has turned into a nightmare. It maybe

that a spouse died and that source of income has ended.

It may be that a couple moved here on a fixed income and now have to replace a roof.

Also included in this group are folks who have an income based on investments that have slowed.

Another sad option to make up for lost income is to seek employment. It is sad that a person at this stage of life must seek employment. In additional to age-imposed physical limitations there is the embarrassment of competing against children as young as their grandchildren for an entry level job.

Many of these people can look to see if they can sell their home and use whatever equity to move to another home or apartment, but here is the rub.

When they look at available replacement housing, they find that the monthly cost will be far greater than their existing monthly cost. They can move and use the equity to cover the increased shelter cost, but they know this is a temporary solution as the equity will be eaten up at some point.

Since that solution is temporary, many turn reluctantly to relatives and in most cases this means their children.

Sadly a third solution is to look into public senior citizen housing in the locale where their lived prior to coming to Florida. In most public housing your rent is calculated at 25% of your gross income.

I am suggesting a more humane solution, and that involves either the city of Palm Coast or Flagler County build-

ing and maintaining senior citizen housing. The timing could not be worse in both the city and the county, but this population is growing.

This population is your friends and neighbors and may one day be you. Time to start the discussion.

Dear Editor: Yes, Mr. Mullins, you do have the right to free speech but, as a public official voted to his office by the people of Flagler County, you also have a responsibility to the office you hold by acting with proper decorum and treating your constituents – regardless of political affiliation - with dignity and respect.

No matter the forum – whether in public, at a council meeting or, yes, even on your Facebook page – you should be above the fray instead of exchanging personal barbs and insults with your constituents.

Despite this abhorrent behavior, the council on which you are a member – by refusing to admonish or even counsel you – is condoning the same irreverent behavior unworthy of any elected official.

If this is the best you have, Mr. Mullins, then the citizens of Flagler County made a grave mistake in the 2018 election.

This is America. We have the God-given right to wear what we want and where we want. A hat is just a hat, and to being upset about it is childish.

The fact the Palm Coast Observer described Mr. Mullins as a “problematic” candidate in its endorsements, shows they have biases as well. The Observer is biased, but I still read it.

We dealt with many presidents we didn’t like. But unlike the media, we just deal with it till the next election.

Mullins helped fight sheriff’s ops debacle Dear Editor: We have been reading all about the abandoned sheriff’s headquarters being able to be fixed while following Commissioners Greg Hansen and Dave Sullivan’s quest not to be proven wrong for sitting on their hands for 2 1/2 years. Bottom line is these two current commissioners failed to act for our deputies and staff while they were being poisoned.

Consider that the abandoned headquarters was constructed four years ago for a total cost of under $9 million by the former Flagler County administrator and engineer. The proposed new headquarters as envisioned by real professionals that design and build these type structures now estimate $30 million.

This is standalone proof that this structure was inadequate in 2015. They built on the cheap because the Board of County Commissioners spent most of the bond issue on a new jail for criminals.

Had Commissioner Joe Mullins not been elected, the Craig Coffey/Sally Sherman Show would still be playing at the Green Dome.

Teen arrested for Instagram threat

A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office school resource deputy was notified by Flagler Palm Coast High School administrators that two students’ Instagram argument about NFL teams had become threatening, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

“A disagreement over NFL teams should never lead to threatening to kill someone else,” Sheriff Rick Staly said.

“It is time that children know that there are consequences to their actions and what they say on social media is permanent. We have a zero tolerance policy for threats in Flagler County. Parents, I again implore you to talk to your children.”

The victim in the conversation said the messages took place the night of Monday, Dec. 2. The suspect, a 16-yearold boy, threatened to beat the victim and his parents and to put a knife to the victim’s throat. He also threatened to put the victim in a grave.

The suspect admitted to deputies that he’d sent the

messages. They took him into custody for written threats to kill, a felony.

School deputies get rifle plates, medical kits All school resource deputies in Flagler County are now equipped with tactical ankle medical kits and rifle plates, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The ankle medical kits were provided through a grant from Walmart, Inc. Each kit consists of a tourniquet, Israeli bandages and nitrile gloves all stored inside an ankle medical holster.

“These trauma kits are essential not only in the event of an active assailant incident at a school, but in the event of an emergency when a tourniquet may be a lifesaving measure,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. “Of course our hope is that we’ve over prepared and we’ll never need them. But we will have them if we do. We appreciate Walmart’s partnership in helping us serve our community in

an emergency.”

Each SRD also received a rifle plate, designed to protect deputies against high energy bullets.

They will be worn in addition to deputies’ current protective equipment.

There are 13 deputies assigned to the SRD unit at the FCSO, including a manager and a sergeant.

They serve fulltime in high schools, middle schools and elementary schools to ensure a safe environment for student learning.

Case moves forward for teen charged in FPC student’s murder The suspect in the April 14 shooting death of 18-yearold Flagler Palm Coast High School student Curtis Gray had a pretrial hearing Dec. 10 at the Flagler County courthouse, and will be tried as an adult, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Suspect Marion Lee Gavins, now 18, was 17 at the time of the shooting. He is charged with first degree murder with

a firearm.

The case, which is before Circuit Judge Terence Perkins, has not yet been scheduled for trial.

An additional pretrial hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m.

Gavins shot Gray outside the Coin Laundry on Belle Terre Parkway near Palm Coast Parkway in the early morning hours after an argument, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Gray was shot in the abdomen and taken to Halifax Health, where he died.

Deputies identified Gavin as a suspect 12 hours after the shooting and arrested him after a 36-hour investigation.

His mother spoke with deputies and said she wanted to turn him in, and he later turned himself in to deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office had requested that he be charged as an adult.

Gavins’ criminal history dates back to 2014 and includes arrests for the sale of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school, violation of probation and possession of a weapon on school campus (an 8-inch kitchen knife), and domestic violence.

Someone broke into a dozen condo units on Riverfront Drive, but didn’t actually steal anything, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Residents found the units had been entered, but when they checked their belongings, nothing was missing.

Narcotics. A deputy spotted a car that was weaving in and out of its lane, according to a deputy’s report. When the deputy stopped the car, the female driver said she was OK, but her male passenger said that she “was possibly tired as she picked him up from prison near the Florida and Alabama state line.”

The deputy noticed that the woman was sitting on a plastic baggie. It contained a substance that was identified as meth. The deputy arrested the woman.

Flagler County Republican Club president and Daytona Beach News-Journal freelance correspondent Danielle Anderson has resigned from her role as the Republican Club president.

“I’m stepping down because in a controversial election season I do not want any appearance of conflict of interest between my journalistic career and my political position with the club,” Anderson said. The Flagler County Republican Club’s vice president, Gail Wadsworth, is serving as interim president until the club holds an election.

“I believe that there is a great opportunity to bring forward new people who will become the future of the conservative party in Flagler County,” Anderson said.

Anderson’s resignation follows an Oct. 25 story in Orlando Weekly that had featured a photo, taken from the Flagler County Republican Executive Committee’s Instagram page, of Anderson standing before a pickup truck that was a decorated with a wrap featuring the words “Trump 2020.” The story’s headline read, “A reporter for a major Florida newspaper is also an operative for the Republican party.”

It noted that Anderson, while serving as the Republican Club president, had written a story for the New-Journal about a visit by Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican, to

Anderson’s resignation became effective on Friday, Dec. 5.

An election for a new club president will be held in the coming weeks, Wadsworth said. Typically, the Flagler County Republican Club’s elections would be held during the December meeting of even-numbered years, not oddnumbered years.

Wadsworth has been on the board of the Flagler County Republican Club since 2002 and has served at various point as president, treasurer and vice president.

How FCSO uses tech to make the community safer The Northeast Florida Regional Council named the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office the winner of the Northeast Florida Regional Leadership Award for Excellence in Public Safety. Sheriff Rick Staly accepted the award on behalf of FCSO at the Northeast Florida Regional Awards luncheon on Dec. 5 in Jacksonville.

The FCSO was nominated for the award by Flagler County Administrator Jerry Cameron for “making Flagler County’s streets and community safer” using cutting-edge technology. The nomination highlighted the use of Rapid-ID, a secure digital fingerprint capture device that, along with software, runs the unknown individual’s fingerprints against the state and federal database of prior arrests and those with outstanding warrants. If a warrant exists, the name and pertinent information is displayed to the deputy in the field or the individual’s real name is provided.

It also highlighted the use of automated license plate reader technology throughout key locations in Flagler County. ALPR technology has directly led to a 212% increase in the recovery of stolen vehicles in 2019 and the apprehension of the suspects and missing individuals.

‘SUNTRUST BUILDING’ ON PALM COAST PARKWAY TO LOSE SUNTRUST What is commonly called the SunTrust Building, at 1 Florida Park Drive S., Palm Coast, is actually the B. Paul Katz Professional Center.

But the three-story building is about to lose its anchor tenant, as SunTrust Bank is moving a few blocks to the west, into the spot where a Mobil gas station recently closed, at the southwest entrance to the Island Walk shopping center.

The former Mobil, worth $647,000 and built in 2011, is already zoned Com 3, so rezoning won’t be necessary, according to

Palm Coast Chief Development Officer Jason DeLorenzo. The Mobil will be demolished in lieu of a bank, he added.

“As the city ages, you’re going to see these redevelopment pieces from time to time,” DeLorenzo said.

SunTrust and Katz representatives declined to comment. The Katz building, built in 1986, is on 2.5 acres and is worth $1.9 million, according to the Flagler County Property Appraiser’s website.

COUNTY’S TOURISM CAMPAIGN AIMS TO HELP A1A BUSINESS

Flagler County’s Tourism Department is unveiling its newest video campaign – Handcrafted & Homegrown – just in time for the holidays.

“We started with Flagler Beach businesses because that area has faced several challenges within the

past few years, most recently the A1A road construction,” said project manager Candi Breckenridge, tourism marketing assistant. “Part of what makes this area so unique are the ‘mom and pops’ – the locallyowned and operated businesses that offer handmade items, meals prepared from scratch and smalltown hospitality.”

The series of five videos (and growing) gives local business owners the opportunity to share the passion behind their products.

They will be shared across Flagler County’s social media platforms, but an even stronger emphasis will be placed on the Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches’ monthly enewsletters, business listings, blog posts, as well as in paid advertising. Additionally, the short features have their own landing page on visitflagler.com – the tourism website.

The video campaign was created using funds from the tourism tax – also known as “bed tax” – paid by hotel visitors to Flagler County.

None of the funding comes from property taxes.

“Our department provides a complex scope of services,” said Tourism Director Amy Lukasik. “We don’t just bring visitors to town, we also provide initiatives that support local businesses and the economy here in Flagler County.”

CITY TO HOST INAUGURAL TECH BEACH HACKATHON The city of Palm Coast has announced the official launch of the inaugural Tech Beach Hackathon event for Jan. 17-20, 2020, at the

Palm Coast City Hall (160 Lake Ave). The event will bring participants from around the country dedicated to solving a health carerelated challenge.

The event comes at a time when Palm Coast is positioning itself as a hub for innovation and growth in the medical industry.

Tech Beach is calling for developers, software engineers (front, back, or full-stack), mobile developers, designers, AI and ML devs, IoT experts, and especially members of the professional health care community.

Several Bulldogs girls weightlifters have their sights set on a state title this season.

exi Buchanan came so close to winning her second state title in a row in February 2019.

The Flagler Palm Coast weightlifter, who won the Class 2A championship in the unlimited weight class as a sophomore in 2018, was 30 pounds short of Oviedo’s Alexis Jones’ 515-pound total.

Buchanan did not only return home with a silver medal.

She returned with a renewed purpose to never be defeated again.

Her senior year is a state title or bust.

“It’s hard because people expected a lot of me last year,” she said of her finish at last year’s state weightlifting meet. “But it’s fueled me because I want to reclaim what’s mine.”

The Bulldogs’ girls weightlifting team graduated several talented lifters from last season, including state-placer Anisa Zwolinski.

The Bulldogs have 21 girls on the roster this season. Fourteen of them are first-time lifters. But the Bulldogs, who finished second to New Smyrna Beach in FPC’s

senior night meet on Wednesday, Dec. 4, are continuing to see progress.

“We’re putting a lot more time in than we have in the past,” Bulldogs head coach Duane Hagstrom said. “I’m happy with our progress. We’ve been working hard, but we still have a long way to go.”

The Bulldogs have seven veterans in addition to Buchanan, who are more than capable of placing at states, including twins Jasmine Hattani and Nadia Hattani.

Anniel Buchanan (Lexi Buchanan’s younger sister), a freshman who didn’t lift weights prior to high school, benched pressed 190 pounds and clean-and-jerked 170 pounds in the 199-pound weight class at the 2019 state meet. She missed two of her lifts — one on bench and one on clean-and-jerk — and ended up 30 pounds behind Niceville’s Melaina Bryant for a bronze medal finish.

She, like her sister, has her sights set on nothing short of gold.

“I just have to push harder now,” she said. “We have to work as a team and encourage each other. That’s going to help us in the long run.”

Several minutes after a header by Flagler Palm Coast’s Riley Clymer found the back of the net, the Bulldogs’ Landon Stone was alone in the box with Matanzas goal keeper Stephen Usina.

Stone’s penalty kick snuck past Usina as he dove for the ball, and the Bulldogs’ second goal of the night brought them back from the brink of defeat.

Almost.

The Pirates, who led 2-0 in the first half and tacked on a third goal early in the second period, held on to defeat their crosstown rival 3-2 the night of Friday, Dec. 6, at FPC High School.

Last season, the Pirates lost to the Bulldogs for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

“That game left a salty taste in our mouths,” Pirates head coach Rich Weber said. “We were really young last year and immature. I don’t like to ever lose, but it was probably good for us for this year.

We’ve got a really tough schedule

and we’ve been trying to grow up and come together. It’s been tough, but I’m excited about it.”

Matanzas was led by Joel Meza, who scored twice on the night — once in the first half and again in the second half. The Pirates’ Tristan Alvarez scored the first goal of the match.

THE RETURN

Before taking walking onto the pitch at Sal Campanella Memorial Stadium, a chill went over Matanzas’ Stephen Usina. This field was a familiar place. It was were he began his high school career as a goal keeper for the Bulldogs.

Usina, a two-year starter, transferred to Matanzas before the start of his junior year.

Usina recently came back to soccer three weeks ago. He had been sidelined after suffering a fracture of the second cervical vertebra in a game against Father Lopez on Jan. 21, 2019. He also had a bulging disc and a spinal concussion.

He had his return to FPC circled on his calendar.

“It was amazing,” he said. “From the start, I always wanted to play against this team here. It was exciting to come back here. It was special.”

anta made his iconic debut in Flagler Beach Dec. 7 by parachuting onto the sand as a kick-off to the annual holiday parade.

This year, the parade was presented by the Flagler County Education Foundation, Grand Living Realty and Salty Church.

The three organizations partnered to turn the parade into a scholarship event for the local high schools. Scholarship money came from entry fees and float sponsors.

“It’s all about giving back to the community,” said Suzie Johnston, one of the parade organizers.

Johnston said another goal of the new organizers is to create a classic parade that draws on the beach landscape and emphases floats. This year, of the 63 entires, one-third were floats.

“We’re one of the few towns in America that has an oceanfront parade,” Johnson said.

The business trio will also be organizing the July 4 parade in Flagler Beach, again aiming to give scholarships to both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high school students.

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL SOCIETY GIVES GIFTS The African American Cultural Society held its annual gift-giving ceremony at 6 p.m.

Dec. 6, at the African American Cultural Center at 4422 N. U.S. 1 in Palm Coast.

Jean Tanner, a member of the AACS gift-giving committee, said this year’s event was a success, with around 120 children in attendance.

“It went very well,” Tanner said. “They were all excited when Santa and Mrs. Claus came out.”

In addition to the presence of the Clauses, the event featured door prizes, musical performances by local children’s choirs and a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by Edwina Brown.

This was the 26th gift-giving event the AACS has hosted.

Tanner said its history goes back to AACS founder Walter Morris, one of the first black U.S. paratroopers, trying to ensure that children in Espanola

got something for Christmas.

“In the past, we’ve had a hard time getting parents to bring kids down from Espanola,” Tanner said. “We want the kids to be there, we want them to enjoy the experience.”

Leading up to the gift-giving, the more than 300 members of the AACS were asked to either bring an unopened toy or send a cash donation.

“We only give the teenagers gift cards,” Tanner said. “They don’t want what you pick for them.”

The children don’t unwrap their gifts at the Cultural Center, so none of them compare what they received. All the children receive two gifts.

“The kids were happy, and we were happy they were happy,” Tanner said. “It was a good night.”

DOH PROMOTES SUPERVISOR Dawn Kamen has been promoted from senior community health nurse to clinical team supervisor by the Florida De-

partment of Health.

Over the past five years, Kamen has focused on providing immunizations for infants, children, adolescents, adult and travel customers, while also branching out to support clinic efforts that include Family Planning, prenatal care and sexually transmitted disease testing/ treatment.

“Dawn is an asset to our organization and her promotion to this new supervisory role is well-deserved,” said Bonnie Welter, nursing director.

NEALON JOSEPH STREAMLINES SPECIAL NEEDS REGISTRY Thanks in large part to Flagler County Planner Nealon Joseph, Flagler County Emergency Management was awarded the Critical Event Management Impact Award by Everbridge Inc. — the platform locally referred to as ALERTFlagler — for successfully streamlining its special needs registry, helping to meet the unique medical necessities of their residents during emergency situations.

“Nealon Joseph — one of our planners — embraced this project, and did the lion’s share of the work,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan

Lord. “This is a great honor, and it’s because of his efforts.”

The county was in good company. State and local government honorees included an emergency management team whose Everbridge alerts helped bring home a missing 3-yearold girl within eight minutes; a security firm whose life safety notifications to employees in the area of a deadly mass shooting kept staff informed of the situation well before it made the local news; and a Florida county that suffered a direct hit from Category 5 Hurricane Michael and distributed critical information to residents about evacuations, boil water notices, and food sites.

One night. Two people. Three truths.

‘Actually’ at the City Repertory Theatre in Palm Coast examines memory and consent.

Amber Cohen and Tom Anthony, two freshmen at Princeton University, spend a night together that, because of how much they both drank, neither of them can remember with perfect clarity.

What can be remembered leads to a rape allegation, and the two students must grapple with the aftermath of something each recalls differently.

This premise, for the play “Actually” by Anna Ziegler, is what compelled Beau Wade to purchase and read it on a whim.

Wade is now directing a production of the play which will run from Dec. 12 to 15 at the City Repertory Theatre.

“This is the kind of theater our audiences come for,” Wade said.

“It’s about perspectives, and the way our personal filters shape how we interpret events.”

“Taking it now through the lens of the #MeToo movement, it’s amazing to realize how much has changed in a three-year span,” said stage manager Angela Young.

INTIMATE SETTING

Wade and Young shared the challenge of coordinating a production that hinges entirely on two actors in an intimate space. They

decided to embrace that intimacy, using two moveable platforms as the only set pieces and a flask as the only prop. The actors’ costumes match, reflecting the gray area of the fateful night’s events.

It is left to sound designer Paul van de Graaf, sound operator Nick Sok and lighting technician Savanna Dacosta to do the rest.

The scale of the production may be small, Dacosta said, “but the story they’re telling is huge.”

The actors, Brent Jordan and Nikki Lynn, were up to the challenge. Walking barefoot with no

scenery to draw the audience’s gaze from them was a vulnerability they welcomed. “I’m fine with these eyes on me,” Jordan said.

Jordan was Wade’s first choice to play Tom; Lynn was found after much auditioning and a readthrough with Jordan.

“It was very quickly evident they had a chemistry that worked very well together,” Wade said.

month, just the two of them.

“You’re continuing a chain of thought for two hours, and you have to keep attached to that,” Lynn said.

“It’s maybe the longest I’ve spoken at a single time onstage,” Jordan said.

They both connected to their characters as people they could have met in their first year of college, perhaps not far removed from the people they remember being. They struggle with familiar questions of gender, of race (Jordan and Tom are black, Lynn and Amber are white), of identity.

Even at their most eloquent, the characters’ vernacular is modern, their feelings raw and unadorned.

In real life, Jordan said, “Not everything you say is as manicured as you want it to be.”

“These are real people,” Lynn said. “They say things that are offensive sometimes, because they’re not perfect.”

Young said they have reached out to colleges like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Daytona State College about their students coming to see the show.

“It’s a situation they could live through,” she said.

Yet while the play’s questions about consent and memory are weighty, Wade wanted the production to emphasize “the human connections that can be forged.”

“Despite the subject matter,” he said, “I believe it’s a love story.”

The play, Wade, Young and the actors said, is not about right or wrong, guilt or innocence. It’s about whether these two people will be OK.

he Santa Paws food drive and adoption event, created this year by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, brought the Grinch to the Flagler Humane Society on Tuesday, Dec.10.

The Grinch, who was sentenced to community service, apparently has a soft spot for pets. He posed with McGruff the Crimefighting Dog for a holiday picture with or without a pet when people donated pet food. All pet adoption fees were waived.

Also in attendance were the FCSO K-9 Unit and Sheriff Rick Staly.

Amy Carotenuto, executive director of the FHS, thanked the FCSO. “This is amazing, and hopefully, this is one of many,” she said. She also mentioned her excitement about “record in adoptions this year.” In 2020, she has building renovations insight.

Shannon Martin, a public information officer of the FCSO, is the mind behind the Santa Paws event. “All we want to do is to serve, whether you have two or four legs. We want to embrace them all,” she said.

Low-interest Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration are available to Florida small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and private nonprofit organizations affected by Hurricane Dorian from Aug. 28 through Sept. 9.

Acting SBA Administrator Christopher Pilkerton made the loans available in response to a letter from Gov. Ron DeSantis on Nov. 6, requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA. Flagler is one of many counties covered by the declaration. Eligible entities may qualify for loans up to $2 million.
