Shopping glee American Legion Post 115 has awarded Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Austin Chewning its Officer of the Year award. The award was presented to Chewning by Cmdr. David Hammond of the American Legion on Dec. 9.

Tornado strikes Flagler County, damaging homes and businesses The Korona Tornado occurred on the same date — Dec. 14 — and the same day of the week, a Saturday, as the 2013 Starlight Tornado.

A tornado tore a 20-mile westto-east path across Flagler County early the morning of Saturday, Dec. 14, damaging homes and businesses. No one was injured.

The tornado, which officials are calling the “Korona Tornado,” arrived on the same date — Dec. 14 — and day of the week — a Saturday — as did the 2013 Starlight Tornado, which had touched down in Palm Coast.

Categorized as an EF1 (EF1 tornados have winds ranging from 86 mph to 110 mph), the Korona tornado was first seen at about 5:15 a.m. in the Korona area, and dissipated at around 5:43 a.m. near the Gamble Rogers area of Flagler Beach, Flagler County Emergency Manger Jonathan Lord told county commissioners during a Dec. 16 commission meeting.

It reached EF1 status after it

crossed U.S. 1. north of Old Dixie Highway at about 5:30 a.m., and was an EF0, with winds in the 65-85 range, when it crossed the Intracoastal, according to a county government news release.

Along the way, it passed through part of Seminole Woods and caused minor to moderate damage in Plantation Oak, Fairchild Oak, Deer Run, and Falling Waters, as well as homes on Creek Bluff Run off John Anderson Highway, and locations in Flagler Beach. It also knocked down hundreds of trees, according to the county news release. The county’s drone footage of some of the damage can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=oAFXgRXLJp4.

“We only had really about one home that we know is uninhabitable, probably five or six other homes that had habitable damage” — for instance, roof damage requiring a tarp — “and dozens of homes that had cosmetic damage,” Lord said.

The storm blew the roof off a house behind the White Eagle on Trojan Way and knocked its windows in, and the county government requested the American Red Cross’ assistance to aid that household, according to the county news release.

About 15 or 20 minutes of severe lightening and thunder preceded the hurricane, but the tornado developed so quickly that the National Weather Service didn’t even put out a tornado watch (indicating that a tornado is possible) — it went straight to a tornado warning (meaning that a tornado has been sighted, or induced on radar).

“Oddly enough, it was the same day and date as the last tornado that hit Flagler County,” Lord said, mentioning the 2013 Starlight tornado. The 2013 tornado was named after the city of Palm Coast’s annual evening holiday parade, which, both that year and this year, fell on Monday, Dec. 14.

In 2013, the parade was disbanded due to severe weather.

DEBRIS PICKUP The Flagler County Public Works Department is picking up tornado debris in public right of way areas and is expected to finish by Friday, Dec. 20, according to a Flagler County government news release.

“This is a public safety issue along our roadways,”

County Engineer Faith Alkhatib said, according to the news release. “We have estimated there is 10,000 cubic yards of debris, mostly downed trees, that need to be removed from the county right of ways.”

The work started in the Korona area and is moving east toward John Anderson Highway.

Six months after it was implemented, the city’s customer service portal Palm Coast Connect is already opening eyes and transforming the way some people interact with their local government.

“It’s been awesome,” said Cynthia Schweers, the city’s customer service manager. “We’ve been able to transition our customer service to give them a one-stop shop, where they submit a case and they’re able to see notifications every step of the way. The way we used to submit work orders, we’d say, ‘We hope it gets done.’”

Residents are feeling more confident in the city, she added.

Response times are down, call times are down, and field service lightning is about to be implemented, meaning the service workers will get notified in the field as the calls for service come in. “It’s the new age,” Schweers said. “Our reps are excited.”

The city of Palm Coast has been in the market for a customer service software system for years, but none of the solutions were satisfactory. Enter Coastal Cloud, the

Connecting Palm Coast Coastal Cloud, a local tech company, created Palm Coast Connect for free; the city contributed staff time and $100,000 in Salesforce licensing annually. local tech company with a growing national reputation. It was founded five years ago by Tim and Sara Hale, who decided they wanted to enter the government solutions market.

They had submitted bids for software solutions for the city of Palm Coast in the past, but they hadn’t scored well in the city’s bid process due to lack of experience in the public sector, which comprises about 15% of their portfolio.

But after Milissa Holland was elected mayor in 2016 and then was hired at Coastal Cloud a year later, the City Council voted to enter into an Innovation Partnership Agreement, which gave Coastal Cloud access to the city’s processes and enabled the company to learn what it needed to build a citizen engagement platform. Because of Holland’s involvement, the city and Coastal Cloud agreed that no money would be exchanged; the platform would be developed for free. The city’s investment would be staff time and purchasing $100,000 in licenses to Salesforce, a leading company that provides building blocks for creating software solutions. The connection with Salesforce also opens door for future connectivity between the dozens of software systems through the city government. The licensing cost will be annual and could increase as more people use the system.

Palm Coast Connect is a website and app that you can use to report concerns and request services from the city. You also receive email notifications to track the progress of your request, just like you could track a package on Amazon. The website also has articles that answer frequently asked questions. “Palm Coast Connect is your friend at City Hall,” the site says. “So create a free account today — and let’s connect!”

It’s a welcome change in tone from a typical government, which many residents feel is slow to respond, Holland said.

And because of the emails, she said, Palm Coast Connect “not only demands accountability and transparency to the public, but it also allows, internally, our organization to function at a level that we could have never even imagined.”

The city gets about 10,000 customer service calls per month, and that has dropped to about 8,000. Before Palm Coast Connect, there was no effective way to analyze trends among the calls for service. Were the calls about PEP tanks? Garbage pickup? Potholes? And was the city doing a good job at responding, or not?

“We were trying to be responsive to our residents, but if I had

to grade us prior to [Palm Coast Connect], I’m not sure I could have given us a grade,” Holland said.

Using this data will keep the City Council informed at budget time, as well. Does a certain department really need extra employees? A report from Palm Coast Connect can help answer that question.

City Councilman Nick Klufas agrees. He added: “Before, you used to submit a request online, and it was a dead end. Now you’re seeing actionable results. … We’re making our city more accessible to people outside City Hall.”

DRY RUN DURING DORIAN

The website also proved its worth in a big way during the Hurricane Dorian scare, only months after Palm Coast Connect launched.

During prior hurricanes, the emergency team received streetby-street status checks from firefighters by phone, using spreadsheets to keep track. It was inefficient both for cleanup crews and for relaying information to FEMA for reimbursement, Holland said.

But during Dorian, Tim and Sara Hale went to the Emergency Operations Center themselves, observed the needs and helped develop a fix in Palm Coast Connect immediately. After the storm scare was over, the crews still had to check each street, but this time, they used Palm Coast Connect and communicated to city staff in real time, creating a map that impressed Florida Power and Light and can be used to report to FEMA much more easily.

“All these people were like, ‘What? We can do this?’” Tim Hale recalls of his interaction with the officials in the EOC. “Their eyes were popping wide.

That’s what’s possible. This is changing the game of how the city could work.”

Hale also said City Manager Matt Morton’s arrival in April 2019 has accelerated the implementation.

Morton said he checks his Palm Coast Connect dashboard daily.

“This has been deployed well,” he said. “ … It treats you like a real citizen.”

Morton sees a future when PEP tank issues can be resolved not by calling someone at City Hall but by scanning a household-specific QR code that will alert the appropriate department immediately, rather than going through a centralized system that will slow down the process — and risk the resident having a PEP tank overflow.

“We’re talking about leading edge technology,” Morton said.

“We’re making our city more accessible to people outside City Hall.”

low medium- and high-density development in certain areas and to allow residential development in business areas.

The land is made up of tracts within the 4,579acre Palm Coast Park Development of Regional Impact, which is already zoned for multifamily and single-family development.

The proposed amendment would allow medium-density residential development on a tract identified as Tract 22; high-density residential development on Tracts 15, 17 and 20; and commercial development on Tract 17. Industrial uses would be limited to tracts along U.S. 1.

The amendments are consistent with city’s comprehensive plan, according to a staff analysis report.

School Board members voice support for transgender students NEWS EDITOR

Two Flagler County School Board members voiced their support for a local transgender boy after a woman took the podium during the Dec. 17 School Board meeting and called the boy “mentally ill” and a “confused girl.”

The boy was in the audience at the time with his father, Randy Bertrand, who’d just addressed the board for the second time in a month to advocate for greater protections for transgender students.

The woman said she had previously been an “activist in the homosexual lifestyle,” and that she was there to respond to the comments made by Bertrand during a Nov. 19 School Board meeting.

She said she was “deeply disappointed” that School Board member Colleen Conklin had voiced support for the teen. The woman added, citing no studies, that for 98% of children with gender dysphoria, the dysphoria goes away.

The American Psychological Associated notes in a fact sheet that “gender dysphoria that continues through the onset of puberty or increases at puberty is unlikely to desist,” and warns providers against attempting to alter children’s gender identity.

The APA does not consider transgender identity itself to constitute mental illness.

Conklin pushed back on the woman’s comments at the end of the Dec. 17 board meeting.

“I am also not ‘confused,’ and I stand by my comments,” Conklin

said, addressing the teen.

Conklin noted that when an LGBTQ person is harassed or abused, they become 2.5 times more likely to hurt themselves; and that LGB youth from rejecting families are eight times more likely to attempt suicide than ones from accepting families. Those numbers are compiled on the website of the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education and elsewhere.

SAVE’s website also notes that 41% of transgender people have attempted suicide.

Board member Andy Dance welcomed the teen to FPC, which he’s recently transferred to, and wished him success there.

Conklin said she agreed with Bertrand’s statement that the issue of transgender students’ welfare in school is a human issue, not a political or religious one.

“There are many that believe that it is both of those things, but at the end of the day as a school district our responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students,” she said. “That is all that matters.”

Mullins’ continues threats, insults

Dear Editor: Joseph Mullins’ vicious attacks go way beyond his Facebook page: He recently emailed a direct threat of a gag order to my husband and me, sent “officially” as county commissioner via his county email.

In spite of our community having grossly insufficient egress and ingress, in addition to our unresolved water issues, he was the swing vote against the welfare of his own constituents to allow ICI to add another 300 residents to our community of over 5,000 people who have only two ways in and out. (Commissioners Sullivan and Ericksen agreed with the undersigned that the item should be tabled.)

Joe Mullins prefers to spend his time taking selfies, voting against the wishes of his constituents then blaming the “law” and holding make-up town hall meetings.

His most recent insult was his campaigning, wearing a “Trump” hat, at Veterans Day ceremonies, and not that of a veteran such as John McCain, George Bush, John F. Kennedy or John Kerry. This was a direct slap in the face to the meaning of Veterans Day. Mr. Mullins continually displays his disrespect for everyone who disagrees with him and hurls insults based on political and religious preferences, peppering his insults with demeaning adjectives such as “old,” “bitter,”

Don’t rezone the Matanzas golf course Dear Editor: This land was zoned recreational as a golf course and must stay recreational, not be used to satisfy greed. The city should buy this land and turn it into a wonderful park with bicycle paths, dog park, baseball and soccer fields.

Let’s turn this land into Palm Coast’s Central Park and plant trees and shrubs — something Palm Coast can be proud of, and do something for the longterm welfare and mental state of its citizens.

Over-trimmed trees make parkway ugly Dear Editor: Today I drove across the Palm Coast Parkway to the western end. A mile or so short of the end, I saw a flashing sign which mentioned the words “beautify Palm Coast.”

I found it uncanny that it was situated in an area where the trees have been so radically trimmed near the utility lines that they look like were torn apart by a tornado.

The westbound parkway looks hideous, with what appears to be about a mile of

these over-trimmed trees.

Ironically, just a bit further west but on the southern (eastbound) side of the parkway, there is a sign welcoming you to “Tree City.” It certainly isn’t beautiful.

I think the city would look better with the trees totally removed, perhaps replaced with something that won’t interfere with the power lines.

Dear Editor: I agree with Dennis Rathsam’s article regarding “Matanzas Woods is getting choked.” I would like to add that all of Palm Coast is getting choked! The building is insane. Palm Coast Parkway is so congested now; I can only imagine it when all this building is done.

Many times of day, the intersection on Palm Coast Parkway and Boulder Rock is a disaster, with people stuck in the middle of the intersection going towards Walmart. Does anyone ever think how that issue can possibly be corrected? I can’t think of one. Let’s just keep building.

City, county should get priorities straight Dear Editor: I retired in 1994 and moved here. I have been told ever since I moved here that Old Kings Road would be widened to two lanes in each direction.

This was originally the only way into this community. Here it is 25 years later, and it still hasn’t been done.

Our county has wasted millions of our taxpayer dollars.

It bought the old hospital, then an old bank on Old Kings Road, now the Sears building.

They don’t seem to know what they are doing. People, wake up when it comes to elections.

Vote them out.

Then we started a city which was doing great under our first two mayors. Now we have a City Council that is wasting our tax dollars. They seem to be more worried about people living on Florida Park Drive instead of the people living in the rest of community. Spending tons of money on parks for dogs. We can’t get our main

Man sentenced to 25 years for manslaughter Circuit Judge Terence Perkins on Dec. 13 sentenced Johnnie Thomas Jr., 26, to 25 years in prison for the manslaughter of Robert Lee Emanuel Sr., 60 .

Thomas had originally been charged with second-degree murder, and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He’d faced 15-25 years. Emanuel died in November 2018 from injuries sustained the previous month when Thomas struck him in the head. Thomas had multiple prior arrests.

Deputies stop $6,000 Walmart theft spree

FCSO catches car theft suspect

A man suspected of stealing a vehicle in Eustis stopped to gas up the car in Flagler County, and deputies arrested him after a 34-hour pursuit.

It began on I-95, became a foot chase when 25-yearold suspect Anthony Mobley ditched the car and ran, and ended with Mobley’s arrest in woods near Cody’s Corner.

“If you steal a vehicle and need gas, Flagler County isn’t the right place to stop,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “This guy was on the run from us for over 34 hours but we knew with the community’s help and good police work we would find

Deputies caught two suspected thieves Dec. 13 after deputies found a car parked in a handicapped space in the Walmart parking lot, noted that it had a stolen tag, and then tried to stop the car as it left, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release.

caught and arrested them. The car contained about $6,000 worth of stolen electronics, $994 of it stolen from the Palm Coast Walmart.

“This is a prime example of ‘felony lane’ thieves traveling the interstate stealing merchandise up and down the east coast, but this time they came to the wrong county,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Crime stops in Flagler County!”

The man “stated that the voices in his head told him to come to the property and smash through the gate,” then apologized and “stated that he should be in a ‘mental institution’ or ‘locked up,’” according to a deputy’s recounting of the woman’s statement.

Before the SUV fled from the property, the woman in the passenger seat “stated that the male was not ‘crazy.’”

The damage to the gate was estimated to cost more than $1,000 to fix.

Two other people who witnessed the incident confirmed the woman’s account.

Deputies looked for the SUV and the man, but didn’t find them.

FAST-WORKING PACKAGE THIEVES 1:29 p.m. 100 block of Emerald Lake Drive Larceny. A woman was in her home with a service employee who was performing work there when she got a notification on her phone that a delivery company had delivered two packages.

About 20 or 25 minutes later, she went to the front door to retrieve them, but the packages were gone. One of the packages had contained shoes and the other contained several shirts and a pair of leggings. The delivery company confirmed that the packages had been left at the woman’s address. The woman contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

Crime rate for Flagler down 15% The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s 2019 Semi-Annual Uniform Crime Report shows that Florida’s crime rate dropped by 6.1% in the first six months of 2019 compared to the first six months of 2018, while Flagler County’s crime rate has dropped by 15.1% — the fourth largest drop in Florida counties with a population over 100,000, according to an FCSO news release.

“Our initiatives are working, and these numbers prove that,” Sheriff Rick Staly said.

“We have a strong focus on district and guardianship policing, and our deputies get to know what should and shouldn’t be present in their patrol areas. Added to that is our increasing use of technology that gives our deputies the tools they need in the field to be effective and efficient. ”

Flagler County turns management of Plantation Bay utility over to FGUA JONATHAN SIMMONS

Flagler County has run the Plantation Bay water utility for years, and in that time the water has been discolored and odorous, prompting regular complaints from residents. Now, Flagler County will no longer manage the utility —and may try to divest of it entirely.

The County Commission during its Dec. 16 meeting approved an agreement to have the Florida Governmental Utility Authority run the Plantation Bay utility, at least for two months.

The agreement is an interim agreement that could potentially precede a permanent one.

A county staff document refers to the agreement as a “first step in working towards divesting Flagler County from being a utility provider,” and part of a series of agreements needed for the FGUA to provide water and wastewater services in Plantation Bay, Eagle Lakes and Beverly Beach.

County Administrator Jerry Cameron told commissioners during the meeting that he had invited the FGUA to operate the ailing utility on a trial basis for several weeks, after he’d consulted with FGUA experts about its problems and felt they’d provided definitive answers.

“They have given me the most thorough and correct explanations of what’s going on there and what it takes to fix it,” he said.

The FGUA was formed through an interlocal agreement between Brevard, Lee, Polk and Sarasota counties in 1999, and now manages over 80 systems in 13 counties, according to its website.

Under its leadership, the water quality at Plantation Bay quickly improved, prompting Cameron to enter into discussion with FGUA about the possibility of FGUA taking over management of the facility permanently.

The county government will hold a town hall meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Club de Bonmont in Plantation Bay to explain the new direction with the water utility.

Cameron said. “The week before they took over management, I would not have been comfortable bathing in the water. Two weeks after they took over the management, I don’t hesitate to drink it.”

While FGUA runs the facility, the county will look into the possibility of divesting from the utility.

That could be difficult because it took on debt to buy the facility, first buying it for $5.5 million in a joint purchase with the city of Bunnell in 2013, then taking over it entirely in 2015.

Cameron said he’s been communicating with the Department of Environmental Protection and with the county’s legislative delegation about possibilities for mitigating the debt load.

“If we can do that, it would be prudent in my opinion to turn the utility over to FGUA, because we have demonstrated over a long period of time that we really don’t have the expertise or the ability of running that utility in a way that benefits the community,” Cameron said.

The structure of the FGUA means that the county can interact with it with greater ease than would be possible with a regular private entity, he added.

Commissioner Joe Mullins, whose district includes the Flagler County portion of Plantation Bay, was impressed by the changes in recent weeks.

“It has never ran and looked better than it looks right now,” Mullins said.

Cameron noted that there are still some distribution problems but that the issues would be fixed under the interlocal agreement.

The commission voted 5-0 to approved the agreement with the FGUA.

Local car wash company SuperWash Express donated nearly $14,000 to the AdventHealth facilities in Flagler, Lake and Volusia counties to support the hospitals’ breast cancer care funds.

During October, SuperWash donated $1 for every Lava Wash and full-service Lava Wash purchased.

Proceeds from the initiative will be used to help local AdventHealth hospitals provide education and screenings for breast cancer.

COMMUNITY CATS AUCTION RESULTS Community Cats of Palm Coast held a fundraiser Dec. 6 featuring the “Pawsitively Purrfect” Auction with 60 items of animal-related artwork, décor and jewelry, most of which was donated by area artists and artisans. The event was attended by about 70 people and was hosted by Rodie’s Place in the Hammock.

Each year, Abundant Life Ministries collects wishes from various children up to 18 years old who are victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment in Flagler County.

These wishes included toys as well as basic needs such as clothing and even diapers and blankets.

A half-dozen residents with homes near the Flagler Executive Airport told the Flagler County Commission Dec. 16 that the planes are creating too much noise.

Jay Siciliani, a resident of Zinnia Court, threatened to sue for emotional distress, and suggested the county limit flight school traffic to 8 a.m. to 5 pm. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, with no flight school traffic on Sundays or holidays.

“I talked to Roy Seiger, the airport manager, again last week about this issue, and his response to me was, ‘The airport has been here since 1942, before the homes were built.’ My response to him was, ‘The homes were here before the flight schools were allowed at the airport,’” Siciliani said. “The airport should grow with the community, not against it. People move to Palm Coast because of the peacefulness and the natural beauty. If the county does not control how it grows, then Palm Coast will become undesirable.”

He added that the County Commission has ultimate authority over the airport.

“If you refuse to help us, then we, the people of this community that suffer from this, will file a class-action lawsuit against the county and the airport for emotional distress,” he said. “We at home have been monitoring our stress levels while these planes

have been operating over our homes where we should be relaxing with very low or no stress.”

One woman said said she’d been in a “really PTSD, not safe place” in the days before Thanksgiving, and that the noise was so bad that she called the airport management.

Gina Weiss, a resident of Zinnia Trail, said the noise from flight schools had become “intolerable.” She’d bought her home in Palm Coast 15 years before, she said, and had been “blown away by its pristine beauty, and Palm Coast was also built on the premise of being a refuge, for its environment and its wildlife.”

When residents approach airport management, she said, “They mock us, they make fun of us, they don’t take us seriously.”

“I knew I bought a house near an airport, but the planes were — you could tolerate it,” she said.

She said the area’s real estate values were “plummeting” because of noise. Records from the county Property Appraiser’s Office show that the area’s real estate values have been rising.

County Administrator Jerry Cameron said the matter was a “complex issue.”

“I think the time has come to do a presentation to the public and to the board as to exactly what challenges we have and what might be done,” he said.

He said the issue will be placed on an agenda for a meeting in January.

lagler Palm Coast’s boys wrestling team didn’t have much when Zach Sanford took over as head coach during the 2018-19 season.

Back-to-back state champion Avery Holder graduated the year prior, and other state qualifiers were lost to either graduation or transfer.

The Bulldogs returned four wrestlers from that year’s team.

As a result, nine freshmen started for the Bulldogs in Sanford’s first season at the helm.

Despite falling behind 46-24 at halftime, the Bulldogs pulled to within 8 points late in the fourth quarter against rival Spruce Creek. But with about 3 minutes left in regulation, the Hawks stole the ball and initiated a fastbreak.

In one fluid motion, the Hawks’ sharp-shooting guard Kaci Oelkers caught a pass, drifted to the right corner and launched a

“When you have shooters like that, you can’t make mistakes,” the Bulldogs’ Brianna Ellis said.

“It’s hard to come back. They played hard.”

Oelkers scored a team-high 21 points for the Hawks and was part of a monster barrage of triples against the Bulldogs.

Spruce Creek defeated Flagler Palm Coast 75-60 the night of Tuesday, Dec. 17, at FPC High School.

“When we miss and the other team shoots and makes everything, it’s tough to come back,” FPC head coach Javier Bevacqua said. “We had a couple break downs and they made us pay.

That’s what it came down to.”

The Bulldogs were led by Ellis, who scored a game-high 23 points against the Hawks.

FPC also received contributions from forward Lauren Stewart and guard Quetrina Brown, who scored 14 points and 10 points, respectively.

The loss was the second of the season for the Bulldogs, who — after giving up a buzzer-beater to tie the game — lost 54-51 to Ribault in overtime on Dec. 14.

Despite the tough defeats, the Bulldogs are pleased with the

overall direction the season is going in.

“We’re rolling as a team,” Ellis said. “We have our ups and downs, but when we work hard and listen to our coach, we do well. I’m proud of our hard work and I’m proud of my teammates.”

In addition, Bevacqua believes his team is fated to meet the Hawks again this season, most likely in the district final and regional tournament.

“We have to keep working hard to bounce back,” he said.

pation building up to this season,” Gillan said. “Our room is tough.

We’ve got some hammers.”

Matanzas set a goal of bringing home hardware from the state championship. That hasn’t changed. “This year we’re trying to find the toughest competition we can find,” Gillan said. “Every day we try to learn and get better.”

Culbreth and Robinson return to lead the Pirates in their final high school seasons. Robinson is currently the No. 1-ranked grappler in the 170-pound class.

“It feels great being a part of the best team in the area,” he said. “I feel like we’re going to take the state by storm this year.”

Culbreth added: “If we keep getting tough kids and the coaches keep coaching the way they have been, this team will go far even once all the seniors graduating. We’re going to be a tough team.”

The Bulldogs put into motion the steps that are going to make them successful in future seasons.

“We had great guys on our team last year, and I’m really happy with what I had, but we were pretty much starting from scratch,” he said. “It was a blessing and a curse.

But I got to start my program the way I wanted to and instill our values without much pushback.”

He added: “Last year, we were all heart. Now, we have heart and some technique.”

This season is “night and day” from last season.

Senior A.J. Cinelli returns to lead the team in the unlimited weight class. He and sophomore Blane DeFord are the most likely on the Bulldogs’ roster to qualify for states.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t have a good number of guys qualify for states,” Cinelli said. “I feel like we’ll eventually have a run at the state title.”

DeFord, who lost in the blood rounds at regionals last year, said Sanford’s coaching has greatly improved his wrestling.

“He really cares,” DeFord said.

“If you’re not doing something right, he’ll tell you. He doesn’t hold back.”

The Bulldogs are gunning for a district championship, a conference title and top four in the region, as well as qualifying as many guys as possible for states.

“It’s going to take a lot of maturing,” DeFord said. “We’re going to have a lot of guys growing over the next couple years. But we’ve made a 180-degree turn from last year.”

he Flagler County Sheriff’s Offic hosted the 13th-annual Christmas with a Deputy event on Friday, Dec. 13, providing Christmas gifts for children in the community who otherwise night not have a Christmas.

The event started at the Chiumento, Dwyer, Hertel and Grant law office building where there were activities including holiday crafts, games, photos. Each participating child received gift bags filled with goodies and their very

An FCSO deputy who asked to remain anonymous paid the balance of his child’s shopping list to make sure the child got everything needed, including toothbrushes, shampoo and new pajamas.

In addition to FCSO deputies, officers from Florida Highway Patrol, the Bunnell Police Department, the Flagler Beach Police Department, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also participated.

Christmas with a Deputy is a nonprofit organization made possible by donations received from the community and the members of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. From July through December, FSCO employees donate to the Christmas with a Deputy fund

through payroll deductions.

This year the agency raised $19,266.

Children are selected to participate in the event by nominations from FCSO employees and Flagler Schools’ staff.

“Every year we look forward to supporting the Christmas with a Deputy program. This is a wonderful way for us to give back and support our community while building positive relationships between children and law enforcement,” Sheriff Staly said.

“I am proud of our employees who donate their time and money to make this event possible for the children of Flagler County.”

FIRE DEPARTMENT’S FIRE TRUCK CHRISTMAS LIGHT SHOW The Palm Coast Fire Department was feeling festive this year with the release of the 2019 Fire Truck Christmas Light Show (view it HERE).

This is the second year in the row the Fire Department released a holiday entertainment video to help create a larger audience for their general messages of community involvement and Fire safety around the holidays.

“For the second year in a row, our guys shared their creative ability to produce something for the entire community to enjoy,” Fire Chief Jerry Forte said. “We enjoy the opportunity

to build community spirits, enhance a holiday season and make someone’s Christmas more bright.”

Last year, the department released a techno version of holiday favorite “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree” (performed

by Brenda Lee) in sync with the lights of emergency vehicles.

Last year’s video had a reach of over 128,000 Facebook users.

This year’s release features a recording of Christmas in Hollis by RUN DMC. In less than 12 hours after the release, it has gone viral again, with over 13,000 Facebook views.

The video was produced by Driver-Engineer Guillermo Arnold, a self-taught and creative video producer who wanted to enhance the holiday spirt of the community.

“This is one way we can spread the holiday cheer,” Arnold said.

REMEMBER, HONOR and TEACH Wreaths Across America honors gravesites of country’s veterans

crowd gathered at noon on Dec. 14 at Craig-Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens to pay respects to fallen American veterans in the Wreaths Across America ceremony.

Flagler County Commissioner Dave Sullivan spoke to the crowd after the Pledge of Allegiance.

“I want our children to understand that the freedoms they enjoy today were not free,” Sullivan said.

Interspersed between Sullivan’s comments and a prayer from retired Chaplain Harry Gilman were performances by Coastal Florida Police & Fire Pipes and Drums, including “America the Beautiful” and “Amazing Grace.”

“This is the first time we’re doing this here in Palm Coast,” Sullivan said. “It honors all our veterans and veterans’ families, and it’s a time of year when we should be thinking about our families.”

The ceremony concluded with attendees laying wreaths at the graves of veterans throughout the Craig-Flagler Palms cemetery. Each was marked with a small American flag. The living were instructed to speak aloud the names of the dead as they laid the wreaths.

Janet Search, a member of the

committee from the local Wreaths for Veterans chapter of Wreaths Across America, said the ceremony was 16 months in the making.

Most of 2019 was spent planning the fundraiser that earned the $4,000 necessary to purchase enough wreaths.

“I thought it went great,” Search said. “I felt this was my payback for the veterans who didn’t get the recognition the deserved.”

Starlight Parade: Night of lights at Town Center Biggest holiday event in the city’s history MICHAEL SCHOTTEY CITY OF PALM COAST COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

The city of Palm Coast’s Starlight Event and Parade was the biggest holiday event in city history, breaking records for the number of registered participants and matching recent years’ event attendees.

Over 80 participants registered to either have a vehicle or walk in the parade. These groups were joined by an estimated crowd of 10,000 in Town Center.

This year’s Starlight Event & Parade was sponsored by the Palm Coast Observer.

The day kicked off with the

pre-parade Starlight Event hosted by D.J. Cedar, the Parks & Rec Elf.”The event also featured a performance from the Slavic Baptist Church Choir as well as many local small business vendors.

The pre-parade event coincided with the Fantasy Lights Festival held by The Rotary Club of Flagler County which continues until Dec. 30. City Hall also featured red and green lights for the event. These will remain lit at night time until the city breaks for the holidays.

The vision for A Christmas to Remember came to Sandra Shank in 2016. The goal was to create a Christmas event for all children and youth in Flagler County with open cases with the Department of Children and Family Services.

Each year, the event has grown; this year, the celebration also included 50 community children in need. In total, 274 kids were registered to receive gifts at the event held Dec. 14

“I can remember when I first started my group home, we had a young man that actually tossed the Christmas tree out of the house. That just shows the level of pain,” Shank said. “I want to make this a day that they can forget about everything that’s going on and they can just be a kid and have a lot of fun. And most importantly, they can see that there are lots of people in the community that love and support them.”

Many community volunteers came together to make A Christmas to Remember a special day.

Each school in Flagler County also adopted a minimum of 10 kids and fulfilled their Christmas wishes.

At the event, Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager thanked those who provide foster care to area students.

WISE MEN GIFT EXTRAVAGANZA Parkview Church’s Wise Men Gift Extravaganza by Parkview Church took place Dec. 14. The Parkview community donated over 1,200 gifts to over 400 children in Flagler County, serving around 200 families.

A team of volunteers turned the Parkview auditorium into a toy store with gifts sorted by age groups and value ranges.

The theme being “wise men,”

the room was set for people to pick one gift from each of the three categories: gold, frankincense and myrrh. Shoppers arrived and were served a continental breakfast, with all food is by the church and local restaurants, while the children were invited to make arts and crafts, watch movies and have snacks.

Hope & New Beginnings and Florida Green Construction have issued a challenge to raise funds and collect needed holiday items for Flagler County veterans and their families.

Hope and New Beginnings is a nonprofit in Flagler County with the mission to “advocate for veterans and their families in Flagler County who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity and connecting them with appropriate services.”

“When we first created Hope & New Beginnings,” said founders Michelle Johnson and Robert Reid, “we envisioned ending veteran homelessness in Flagler County. Having friends and family members who are veterans and who have experienced homelessness, we have a unique perspective on the challenges that they face.”

Florida Green Construction has made a $500 matching challenge for the noprofit’s “Stockings for Vets” fundraising event. They are asking fellow Flagler County community members to meet and exceed their $500 investment in Hope & New Beginnings, and double their investment to $1,500.

FEED FLAGLER 2019 FEEDS 1,344 FAMILIES Four community churches served as hot meal sites for Feed Flagler the day before and on Thanksgiving Day. Their counts are:  Hammock First Baptist Church: 110 meals  United Methodist Church Palm Coast: 40 meals  AME Church Palm Coast: 100 meals  First United Methodist Bunnell: 230 meals 864 Flagler families were pro-

vided meal boxes thanks to the efforts of Feed Flagler and other teams throughout the county that collected Thanksgiving food items during the months of October and November. In total, 1,344 families and individuals were provided a Thanksgiving meal this year.

Flagler County Government Services held a collection contest. Emergency Management won with a total of 753 items.

The Mad Hatter’s Christmas Ball 2 on Dec. 7 at the VFW 8696 was a hit with attendees, featuring live music by Mari-O and the Q-Band and song and dance performances interspersed between portions of the headwear contests. Three $100 cash prizes were given to the winners of the three hat/headwear categories.

Following up on 2018’s challenge to fire crews from the Palm Coast Fire Department to design their own station logos, crews are beginning to design their own new kitchen tables.

anta Claus was not the only sought out character at the annual Flagler Palm Coast High School Dinner with Santa Dec. 12. The Grinch, Anna and Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen” and some Whos from Whooville also made an appearance.

The event, which is led by members of the schools Student Government Association, is designed to give all families in the community an opportunity to see the big man in red.

“There’s some parents that can’t afford to take their kids to see Santa and a photographer, but this being only $3 for an entrance fee, it makes it so everyone can come and every child can have that Christmas feeling,” said Shelcey Garcia, FPC senior and SGA member.

Profits from the event will be given to community members in need.

“I found the instructions online,” Ezagui said, laughing.

“Someone else did the dirty work.”

Besides an excess of Lego pieces, much work goes into preparing for this public celebration of the Festival of Lights. Volunteers need to coordinate with the local businesses sponsoring it, such as Palm Coast Pharmacy, as the celebration is entirely locally funded. This year’s festivities will include a petting zoo, a breakdancing show, face-painting, and a train around the center of European Village. There will need to be a healthy amount of fried, oily food — doughnuts, latkes and such — to symbolize the oil which burned a miraculous eight days and nights for the Maccabees in the second century B.C. But this is the fourth year of Chanukah at the Village, Ezagui said, and they have around 10 volunteers helping, so the process has become more organized each time and relatively low-stress.

“They’re very accommodating,” he said of the European Village management.

“Its the biggest Jewish celebration that we have in Palm Coast,” Ezagui said. He hopes people appreciate what it is to be able to practice and enjoy the Jewish religion freely, as it wasn’t long ago in many places that “to light the menorah could get one imprisoned or killed.”

There must have been a contagious sense of appreciation in previous years, as Ezagui said many of his congregants are people he has met at previous Chanukah celebrations, and last year saw around 350 attendees.

“Some of the best responses we get out of all our yearly activities,” he said, come after Chanukah at the Village.

But the celebration, he emphasized, is for everyone and anyone.

“Labels are for packaging,” Ezagui said. “We don’t differentiate between this Jew and that Jew. If you want to come, you’re welcome. You don’t have to know anything to celebrate.”

Throughout the Festival of Lights’ eight days and nights, Chabad Palm Coast will be involved in the community in other ways as well, hosting other, smaller celebrations, giving out free menorahs and visiting Jews in assisted living to bring the holiday to them.

“The message of Chanukah is that a little light dispels a lot of darkness,” Ezagui said. “When I share it, it doesn’t take away my light, it just makes the room even brighter. A little light is what we need right now.”
