Making memor ie Changi ng lives s... Fun

Holidays are all about fun! And fun means different things to different people. That’s why we offer a wide range of different options. Many of our holidays are multi-activity events, with a big mix of different games, sports, crafts and outings. Others focus on a particular activity, such as sailing, karting or the performing arts. Guests are welcome to do activities that they already love, or to challenge themselves with something new. And of course, a big feature of all our holidays is the opportunity to make friendships that can last a lifetime.

Faith exploration On Scripture Union holidays, we invite children and young people to explore the difference Jesus can make to the challenges and uncertainties of life. The way that this is done will vary depending on the age group and facilities available, but it will always be engaging and relevant to the children and young people on the holiday.

Safety Safety is of paramount importance to us. All our leaders are appropriately vetted (including a DBS check) and trained for the roles they are carrying out. On all our holidays, there is a ratio of at least one adult to every eight children/young people. All activities are subject to sensible risk assessments to minimise the chances of an accident, and any specialised activities are AALS licensed and carry the correct level of insurance.

Affordability We do not run our holidays to make a profit. In actual fact, we try to keep our prices as low as possible – and grants are available for those who need help. Our many volunteers also contribute to the cost of our holidays, which helps us provide excellent value for money.

Volunteering Volunteering to serve God on one of our holiday teams is an excellent opportunity to: • be part of a dynamic team • receive training • get new ideas to try out at home and church • be involved in helping others to find faith • possibly laugh, cry, and be challenged, exhausted and amazed – but not necessarily all at once! To be a volunteer at a Scripture Union holiday, you’ll need stamina, a sense of humour and to be a Christian in sympathy with the aims of Scripture Union. Most team members enjoy working alongside children and young people, but there is also a need for cooks, caterers, administrators, those with outdoor pursuits qualifications, lifeguards, first aiders and many more. Leadership Training (Junior Leaders) If you are under 18 and want to participate in a holiday to improve your leadership skills, we have a wide variety of opportunities for you to choose from. Sent, Make the Difference, Helter Skelter Task Force and

Training in Action are holidays specifically designed to train you to lead, but lots of our other holidays would welcome you as a Junior Leader, and would provide training too. Other opportunities If the idea of spending time on the beach or in a local park appeals to you, then you can join Scripture Union in taking the good news of Jesus to children and families on various beach and inland missions over the summer. These last from one to two weeks. Wherever you live in England or Wales, Scripture Union is at work not far away, and you can support and get involved with our ongoing programmes. You can choose to volunteer regularly or just once or twice a year – either way, we’d be delighted to welcome you along. Sponsor a child We do all that we can to ensure that our holidays are affordable for most people and we already subsidise the costs. However, we receive multiple requests each year for financial support from children whose families just cannot afford for them to attend. Historically, we have worked in partnership with the David Chilcott fund who have provided grants, now averaging £50, to hundreds of young people over the last twenty years, but sadly even with this support, our holiday leaders are increasingly telling us stories of children who are still unable to afford to attend their SU holiday.

This really is the stuff of fond memories and growing friendships that last a lifetime. It’s a turning point in so many young lives, a time when, surrounded by faithful Christians, children meet with Jesus and grow spiritually. Bex, holiday leader at Bitesize

In 2017 Scripture union are launching our holiday fund with the aim to ensure no child is ever excluded due to a lack of money.

We estimate we will need over £10,000 each year to make this possible. If you believe this is as important as we do please help, your gift could literally make a child’s summer and change the direction of their entire life.

Donate You can make a donation online at: www.scriptureunion.org.uk (plus there will also be an opportunity after you have made a holiday booking), or by ringing the Scripture Union National Office on 01908 856000. Please help if you can.

Terms & Conditions What does the price include? The price includes full board and accommodation, activities, equipment and excursions (unless otherwise stated). The holidays are based at outdoor centres, independent schools and campsites at various locations in England and Wales (unless otherwise stated). Accommodation arrangements are in separate-sex bedrooms, generally sleeping between two and eight children/young people. Different prices reflect the cost to Scripture Union of hiring the site, as well as the activities undertaken. In an effort to keep the cost of the holidays as affordable as possible, many volunteer team members also pay a fee. What about travel? The cost of travel to the holiday venue is not included in the fee (unless indicated). Parents and guardians are responsible for the travel arrangements to and from the holiday venue. There may be organised transport arranged for you by the holiday leader, and an adult will escort these groups. Those who travel independently on public transport can be met at the coach or railway station nearest to the holiday venue. What about safety? The issue of safety is taken seriously throughout the holiday. All activities carry an inherent risk, but this will be minimised to an appropriate level by taking all reasonable steps. All outdoor pursuit activities are carried out under qualified supervision. This supervision may be by our own leaders, or leaders hired from a centre accompanied by our own. All recommended safety equipment is always worn, including buoyancy aids for water activities and helmets for climbing, cycling and karting. Equipment is checked and maintained to a high standard. For water-based outdoor activity holidays, you must be confident in water when wearing a buoyancy aid. Scripture Union Holidays is registered with the Adventure Activities Licensing Service as being licensed to provide water sports activities. Licence details can be confirmed by calling the Licensing Service on 02920 755715. Scripture Union has a Safeguarding Policy, and all leaders and team members are subject to this. Team members are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure, issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Details can be obtained from the Scripture Union National Office.

34

Money matters The Scripture Union Holiday Fund assists young people from families on income-related benefits or low incomes to attend our holidays, who would otherwise be unable to without financial help. You can find out more information on our website: www.scriptureunion.org.uk/3522483. You must apply before the holiday begins (preferably at least eight weeks before). You can do this by ticking the relevant box on the event booking form – after which you will then be sent a link to an online Holiday Fund application form. If you need a paper version of this form, please call the Scripture Union National Office on 01908 856000. Whilst you are waiting for a response to your application, please do not pay any outstanding fees. If you do pay and then receive a grant, resulting in an overpayment, Scripture Union will refund the equivalent grant amount to you, minus a £5 administration charge. If no grant is awarded, we will contact you to discuss options. The balance of your fees is due no later than eight weeks before the holiday commences. If payment is not made by the due date, we reserve the right to cancel your holiday booking. Full payment should accompany bookings made within eight weeks of the holiday start date. For other payment options, please contact the Scripture Union National Office on 01908 856000 or holidays@scriptureunion.org.uk. What If I cancel? The Booking Secretary for your holiday should be informed immediately. Your deposit is non-refundable, but if you cancel more than eight weeks before the holiday begins, we will refund any additional fees paid – though there may be a charge. If you cancel eight weeks or less before the holiday commences, you will be liable for the full fee (see What about insurance?). What if the holiday is cancelled? In the unlikely event of a holiday having to be cancelled, or for some unforeseen reason curtailed, Scripture Union will undertake to refund fees already paid by participants. We have also arranged for the security of your money to be paid, in the unlikely event of our insolvency. An independent trust has been set up to hold the fees until the completion of the holiday.

What about insurance? Scripture Union is fully covered for public liability. You are not, however, insured against personal accident, injury as a result of an accident or loss of possessions. We therefore suggest those who feel that additional insurance is necessary to make their own arrangements. Additional needs Whilst recognising that all children are special, some may have needs which require extra support. It is Scripture Union’s aim to include such children on our holidays, within the guidelines of suitable provision and staffing. To do this, we ask all parents to give us full details of their child’s additional needs (ie disability/medical condition/medication) at the time of booking, in order that we can meet those needs to the best of our ability. We must also be advised at the time of booking if a child currently has or has recently experienced any behavioural or social problems, which may affect their own safety and/or the well-being of others on the holiday. Participation We expect everyone who goes on the holiday to be fully involved in every aspect of the programme, including the informal teaching sessions and doing daily duties (eg washing up on some holidays). Leaving holiday site There are occasions when children may be allowed to leave the site in small groups – unaccompanied by a leader – for a short, specified period of time. This will be arranged as appropriate to their age and the location. Reasonable measures will always be put in place for them to contact holiday leaders (eg a mobile phone number or an agreed meeting point will be given). Mobile phones We do not encourage young people to bring mobile phones to the holiday, as experience has taught us that their use can cause homesickness and inconvenience to the smooth running of the programme.

Photographs Children/young people may be photographed on the holiday! The photographs will only be used by Scripture Union or organisations in sympathy with Scripture Union, to whom express permission may be granted. If any children/young people do not wish to be photographed, they can tell the photographer, who will respect their wishes. We cannot take responsibility for any photographs or video clips that are put onto social networking sites by guests on the holiday. Scripture Union may use photographs or video clips to promote its holidays on such sites, but please contact us if this is of concern to you. Data protection Scripture Union will hold your details on file, but will not release the information to any third party. Some details may be shared with the team, and an address list may be shared with the children/young people and team on your chosen holiday – enabling them to make contact outside of the holiday – but if you are not happy for this to happen, please advise the holiday leader when booking. Any comments? We welcome your comments in order to continue to improve our service to you. If there is a problem with the holiday, please contact us immediately and we will do our utmost to find a satisfactory solution. We would also like to hear from you with your positive comments. Scripture Union reserves the right to: • refuse any application, • alter or cancel a holiday where necessary, • ask a child/young person to leave a holiday if their behaviour is incompatible with the general enjoyment and well-being of others – in which case, the relevant parent/guardian will be informed. Collection arrangements must be then made at the parent/guardian’s own expense, and no refund will be given.

Our leaders do have permission to ban their use, but where they are permitted, we expect them to be switched off and stored securely (except at designated times). Scripture Union is a member of Christian Camping International 35
