TREE WALK ... Arborist Heather Booty will lead a walk through Old Palo Alto, meeting at the Gamble Garden Center, 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto (Churchill Avenue parking entrance), on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to noon. The walk will be followed by a picnic lunch when volunteers will be trained to examine the health of young trees. Small teams will then survey planted trees in Old Palo Alto. SOLAR WATER HEATING ... Jordan DiGiorgio, solar water heating program manager at California Center for Sustainable Energy, will teach a free workshop on “Solar Water Heatingâ€? on Thursday, July 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cubberley Community Center, Room H-1, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. The workshop will cover the benefits of solar heating as well as information on the city’s cash incentives to install a qualifying system. Filoli is offering a couple of classes to maintain one’s home garden in tip-top shape, both on Saturday, July 16; both take place outdoors at 86 CaĂąada Road, Woodside. “The Joys of Summer,â€? from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., deals with planning annual displays, pruning perennials and spring-flowering shrubs, fruit thinning and preparing the garden for fall. “Pest Management,â€? from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., begins with identifying pests and diseases, then includes proper plant selection, site preparations, soil conditions and emphasis on non-chemical control.
